Hi Diary, I came across a story book today when I was in the library. It captured my attention with the name called “In Watermelon Sugar”.
What is watermelon Sugar? Seriously...
I just can’t wait to know the story and I ‘ve finish reading it within an hour.
The book is about a city where the people use sugar that extracted from watermelon, as that’s the only fruit they have or the only resource they have in their city, to build most of the things in their city, mostly infrastructure like bridges.
Isn’t it fascinating? Imagine a city that is built by sugar...hmm...

I couldn’t get the Watermelon Sugar city out of my mind since I read the book a week ago.
Heaps of sceneries and landscape of the city is playing on my mind nonstop. I am so curious about the extraction of sugar from watermelon that I actually went to research about it.
The whole extraction process is not complex at all. It involves only pulping the flesh of watermelon. Of course filtration and vaporization is required to get the pure sucrose from the watermelon. The end product is then placed is a vacuum machine to crystallize the liquid into solid, which is sugar.
At this stage, I guess sugar as a new building material doesn’t sound impossible at all, don’t you think? Can sugar replace brick?....

The gloomy day makes me walked into my Watermelon Sugar city again.
If sugar does really replace brick in the future...where do we get all the watermelon?? We must have someone to grow and harvest all the watermelon to get sufficient amount of sugar.
What if everyone do have their own harvester to harvest part of the watermelon field?
What if harvester is no longer something that only for farmers, instead it is as normal as a writing desk that could be stored at home?
The idea sounds quite funny but imagining how the desk will look like is definitely interesting...I guess....

Ta-daa! I came out with my very own “Confectionary Desk.
What is confectionary desk? It is a harvester, but in a scale of a desk that will allow you to harvest the watermelon and at the same time also to extract sugar from the watermelon.
It is designed based on the whole process of extraction of sugar from watermelon.
The desk will also use to store the tools and apparatus that are needed for the whole procedure to carry out.
Oh, I should have done another version with the tools on the desk....

Oh yeah, finally I m done with the “confectionary desk” -with -tools-on version.
Maybe I should do a perspective version, too?
Seeing the plan view makes my mind want to know about the so called “Three-dimensional view”.
Alright, seems like theres some works for me.
I can’t wait to know what it will looks like, I always get excited to visualize something out of a story book that only expresses itself through lines and lines of words.

It ‘s been a week and I finally done the “confectionary desk” in a more three -dimensional view.
*applause*
Looking at this view, I could imagine someone using the desk on a huge watermelon plantation field; pulled by horse, slowly harvest all the watermelons on the field.
The wind is blowing, my hair grabbed the sweetness of watermelon in the air. I am sitting in front of my confectionary desk, harvesting thousand and thousand of watermelons, squeeze their juice and making lots and lots of sugar.

OMG!!! Breaking news, my diary!!!
Look what I‘ve found today....It ‘s been almost a year that I haven’t thought about “watermelon sugar”.
I couldn’t believe that the government is actually planning to use sugar to replace petroleum.
Even though not sugar to replace brick, but I still feel so excited with this news.
Hopefully they will make some progress in this case soon.

Loook, look, Diary!!!
The thing that I was hoping about is on the Headline of today newspaper.
The government is planning to develop the land at Fishermans Bend and they hope the new city should focus on this issue.
Are they going to make the whole city to plant watermelon?

Finally, finally....The government has announced that the whole new city at Fishermans Bend will have to plant watermelons.
Watermelons has become a new source of energy in Australia, as it is replacing petroleum, it is replacing other types of energy too.
I couldn’t believe that every part of watermelon is so useful that not only the flesh but the rind itself could contribute so much to the food and medicinal industry.
It could even replace wheat!!!
I can’t imagine myself munching on watermelon rind fries when I go to any fast food store.

Once again, the government has announced that not only the new city has to start to plant watermelon but everyone are also encouraged to start their very own watermelon plantation at their own backyard.
Watermelon that is planted from our house will have to send to the nearest confectionary desk station, in exchange with home heating oil or vehicles petroleum.
How good is that?
I guess I will start to plant some watermelon at my backyard, too!!!

After almost a month, the government has came out with a shocking research that if we were to cover the whole year petroleum consumption of Victoria, the grey area on the left will be the land that is required to plant sufficient watermelons.
A shocking number is revealed too. We’ll need 16 Billions of Watermelons per year to cover just petroluem consumption of Victoria.
Oh my, it is even bigger than Victoria!!!
Wonder how are they going to resolve this issue...hmm...
To be continued....

After a great new year break, once again, the govenrment has came out with a resolution that reduced the huge area into a way smaller area which only covers Fishermans Bend and some neighbouring areas.
The government has not revealed the method that solved this issue.
I really wonder what is the secret weapon to reduce such a large area into a just Fishermans Bend? hmm...
We’ll see...
Scaffolding Structure Metal Frame and tubing to support vertical garden.
2500mm
Livestock Panel To support the watermelon to grow vertically.
Watermelon Two plants per floor with the distance of 1500 to each other. *One plant produces minimum 5 fruits.
Raised Garden Bed 600mm Depth -To control moisturization of soil and pest. 2500mm Walk through height -as a shelter
Ladder Access to upper floor.

The watermelon sugar issue goes on....
Well, well...finally the shocking secret weapon is revealed to the public today.
The new city in Fishermans Bend has to live in this scaffolding structure that will stack up to 300 stories high....
The main solution that reduced the land area is actually the vertical garden system that is installed in this scaffolding structure.
I wonder how does it feel to live in 300 stories high tower? It is three times taller than the Eureka Tower!!!
I am getting really excited now!!!

The sun is bright and so do the news of the Watermelon Sugar city.
More images and system is revealed to the public today in the newspaper.
I was a little bit worry to climb up the stairs that is 300 levels in height, but the new technology has solved the problem by installing lift core that will runs up to 300 level high, next to each scaffolding tower.
Will the lift core runs faster than the one in Eureka Tower?

I found this on the newspaper today.
The initial masterplan is finally published to introduce and inform the public about the new city.
The scaffolding tower is arranged in the order that it formed a new “Hoodle Grid” at Fishermans Bend.
I guess the whole idea is to respect the existing “Hoodle Grid” in the CBD.
Hmm....sounds pretty good....

I think the new Watermelon City is getting everyone excited.
I’ve watched a video yesterday about an artist, who shows great support to the government in the Watermelon City project.
Sigalit Landau is an Israeli Sculptor, who bravely swims in between 500 watermelons in the sea, nakedly, Watermelons are connected to each other using thin threads to keep them in coil.
The government is really inspired by this piece of art that they decided to use the water area around Fishermans Bend as the future watermelons storage facilities.
I should show some support by start to plant some watermelons soon...
Land Preparation at Fishermans Bend
My family started to plant watermelons at our backyard, on the walls and also some on the roof.
2030 - Set up land for scaffolding towers

More and more scaffolding towers are installed on the site. It has been a vast development since 26 years ago.
I still remember the days when I was a teenager who dreamt about the watermelon city.
I will never think that the dream that I dreamt about is actually half way becoming into reality.
I believe and hope that this city will be realised soon since technology is improving, I wish to go to this watermelon city before I leave the planet earth, I insist.
I see the new city, one day...with my children and perhaps, grandchildren....

Finally, I went for a stroll at the new city with my children and grandchildren, as I wished before.
It is beautiful, as beautiful as the one that I dreamt of. The air in that city is sweet, as sweet as watermelon sugar.
Today is the grand opening of most of the stores on Bourke Street Mall in the new city. Crowd is everywhere.
As I walked on the street, I could feel the same excitement that I had long ago,
The same excitement as when I cracked my head just to design the confectionary desk.

I heard that the CBD area of the new city is officially done.
I am not greedy at all but I still wish to go to the new city again and have a real close look at the CBD.
I wonder if there will be hundred of Sigalit Landau swimming in the huge watermelon pond in the CBD....
Maybe I should ask my son again to bring me there...
I really want to let him feels the excitement that is beating in my heart, the dream that I dreamt and insisted for so many years, just like how I still insist to tell my diary everything about my dream...

I went to the new city again, but at a different level this time.
My son brought me to visit his friend who lives in one of the unit in those scaffolding towers.
The unit that he is staying in overlooks the whole CBD watermelon pond. And guess what, swimming with watermelons has become a new sport in the city.
Blame my age, my hands and legs are shivering when I walked close to the edge of the unit.
How I wish that I am still the young man, just like 40 years ago, who definitely dares to sit at the edge of the unit and look at the CBD whole day long, while stroking my beloved pet, Lucky.
2042 - The city is extended to the water surface.
2045- Bridges are installed in the city.
2048 - The city is extended up north.
2050- New bridges are installed in the city.

Great news, Diary!!!
Great news that I have been waiting, since 40 years ago.
The watermelon city is finally done with last touch up by adding a promenade that runs across the city.
I should go to the city this weekend,
I want to go and stand on the promenade, looking at the city that I have been dreaming of.
I want to breathe in the air that filled with the sweetness of watermelon sugar.

I went to the promenade today.
My grandson brought his binoculars along so that he could zoom in every bits of the scene from the promenade.
I borrowed his binoculars and looking out to the sea, at that moment, my heart is no longer fear of height.
Every movement and action in the city makes my heart beats faster and faster.
I felt like I am still the same young man, who is standing on the balustrade of the promenade, watching the city, that was once is his dream.
