Hi!

Illustrator

My name is Vivian Malta, and I’m a recent graduate of architecture and urban planning at UFES (Federal University of Espírito Santo). I believe architecture is a pratical way of building a better world. Through the design of buildings and public spaces, architects have an opportunity to enrich and influence the lives of people who inhabit these spaces. That opportunity fascinates me. I enjoy learning and I am a determined individual. During my time in NY I grew to understand that the world is full of complex intricate issues and that there is still more to learn, but simultaneous my stay also made me eager to be part of the field, to some day become an excellent professional who is able to produce successful and engaging designs that will enrich the lives of others. The following portfolio contains a selection of work from my undergraduate years. Enjoy!

The dry hinterland northeastern in Brazil is a really poor area where people don’t have enough water or other basics to live. In a group of 200 people we were divided in teams of: health care, work with children, services and collect donations. I worked in the collect donations team and was responsible for leading, with a friend, a team of 23 people that worked with children in this trip. We organized the activities, divided people into smaller teams and organized their function and responsabilities. We also created a kit for children with basic scholar material and raised money to buy 300 units of the kit that were distribuited for children in the “sertão” of Parajú.

EXPLORING THE BORDER YEAR TYPE LOCATION

2018 Landscape & Architecture design - Thesis VitĂłria, ES - Brazil

Cities have become increasingly inhabited by individuals from different socioeconomic, cultural and religious contexts. The interaction between these people has the potential to be incredible and enriching. However, this is not what we have seen, the reality of most cities is social inequality, intolerance and division of the city’s structures in places inhabited by groups of similar context. These divisions can be a generate or highlight of the boundaries. Borders tend to be detrimental to cities when, in addition to territorial division, they evidence social separation among urban dwellers. However, public spaces can be placed on boundaries areas to function as a connector between communities and increase the social diversity of the public place.

4

Therefore, the objective of this work is to explore a border between four neighborhoods: Andorinhas, Santa Luiza, Pontal de Camburi and Goiabeiras, located in the city of Vitoria/ES - Brazil, to create a public space that intends to be a connecting place between people from different socioeconomic contexts, different age groups, gender, color and race, so they will interact and with each other and create a more diverse community.

The ability of a place to attract a variety of users can be informed by the demographics of the surrounding neighborhoods, by looking at the characteristics of neighboring communities, it is possible to formulate hypotheses about the variety of people likely to use the proposed site (GEHL INSTITUTE, 2016). Borders tend to be an area between regions with different characteristics. Along with the location, public areas need to have good access and connections and need to have a variety of program that represents the residents that are around it (KNAPP, 2017). A study of the project area was made, and the border between the neighborhoods of Andorinhas, Santa Luiza, Goiabeiras and Pontal de Camburi, in Vitória - Brazil, was understood as a potencial place to have a diversity public space. Data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (2010) were used to draw the profile of the residents of each neighborhood. For exemple, socioeconomic data show that there is a substantial difference between Santa Luiza and Andorinhas, the first has an average income four times higher than Andorinhas.

The four neighborhoods have a total of 6,789 residents, with an average of 52% of women and 48% of men of different age groups. And the color and race data also show variety, having white, black, brown, yellow and indigenous people living in the neighborhoods. The land use map was made on a radius of 300m distance from the site. It was noticed that the site is delimited by local streets to streets of metropolitan scale. There is diversity in the land use, being quite residential in the region of Andorinhas, commercial use in Santa Luiza, with some residences to the north, the Federal University (UFES) stands out in Goiabeiras and in Pontal de Camburi the use is mostly residential. Was noticed a lack of public spaces and green areas. In the neighborhoods of Santa Luiza, Goiabeiras and Pontal de Camburi, visits were made to observe the area, in Andorinhas happened a guided tour with the local leader of the community. Subsequently were made visit and observations on the site specifically to see importante views, levels, sensations, winds, sun, and other characteristics of the place.

PARTI

CONCEPT

To explor a border area is to visualize an opportunity to buil a place of meeting and interaction between diversity, as a way to generate social, empathic and intectual grown in an area. “That the border becomes a convergence space”

PROGRAM

Considering the analyzes made on the area and the concept, the proposed program is a park, containing two main buildings, a public library and a student residence. The park and library were developed at the preliminary study level and the residence was only proposed.

Once the program was defined, the objective of the parti is to promote the spatialisation of it. Various uses are interconnected in the project to offer different spaces and to give options to the users, such as an active area intended for sports; a quiet area, close to the river, for people wishing to rest and have contact to the nature; or a children’s area that attracts children with their parents or caregivers. The parti was developed to create access and connections, among which are Andorinhas and Santa Luiza neighborhoods and between the land and the river. As a basis for the composition of the project, an orthogonal gride of 1m x 1m was used, which helped to understand the scale of the place in the design process and hepled taking shape from the parti to actual design. Arcs, circumferences, and guidelines were also used on the composition of the place.

THE PARK The park was placed on the southern bank of the river and was proposed the redesign of its border and has 10 subspaces that were careful designed. An existing rock seems at first as a possible natural barrier was used as a way to sectorize areas with programs for different ages, while at the same time functioning as another subspace in the park, where people can climb to go from one point to another or to enjoy the surrounding landscape and views. For the Passagem Bridge, understood as a substantial physical barrier, it was proposed to use vegetation in the areas around the bridge to soften the barrier from the point of view of who walks in the park and as a way to reinforce the pedestrian path under the bridge. At the beginning of the Passagem Bridge, an area of conflict between pedestrians and automobiles was identified. In order to improve the connection between one side and the other of the site and to bring greater safety in crossing the street, a pedestrian stop was proposed between Rua Doná Maria Rosa and Ave. Nossa Senhora da Penha. There is an electric transmission line which is aerial, it does not form a physical barrier, but it worked as a limitation on the project. According to the standard, no fixed or continuous use buildings are allowed, so to ensure the safety of users, non-permanent program was proposed under the line and vegetation was placed there to create unity with the other areas of the park.

PARK SUBSPACES

1 Coffee and Market Plaza 2 Sports 3 Gym 4 Students Plaza 5 Meadow 6 Rain Garden 7 The Rock 8 Children’s Area 9 Meeting Plaza 10 Library Plaza

In the project was proposed the implantation of about 100 trees, in the park and adjacent streets, for shading and improvement of the thermal comfort of the environments. The trees were also used to mark axes and provide visual unity, reinforcing the connection at the border points.

COFFEE AND MARKET PLAZA It was located in the southwest portion of the park because it is the area of the largest movement of people on daily life and is where already happens the weekly fair of Andorinhas. The plaza connects the street Rua Doná Maria Rosa, which has a large flow of cars, and Rua Clério Vieira Falcão, which is a local street. Benches and trees demarcate the perimeter of the plaza, the trees provides shade and visual connections. A coffee store was also proposed with public toilets, a covering and mobile furniture.

SPORTS & GYM In the sports area is a court, a skate park and a outdoor gym. The court and the skate park seek to attract mainly young people. Located near the most crowded street because the youth, mostly teenagers, usually walk in groups and tend to prefer bustling places, moreover the noise produced by games and skates can join the noise of cars and allow other areas of the park to be quieter . The outdoor gym and tables are intended to please mainly the elderly public. It was located near the local street because it is quiet, but still has pedestrian flow and is facing the residences of the neighborhood. Older people usually go to the parks alone and look for some privacy, but they like to watch the movement of people. The change of the pagination of the floor and the demarcation of the semicircle sectoralize these subspaces.

THE RAIN GARDEN The Rain Garden serve to collect the rainwater that drains from the bridges and treat it naturally before returning to the canal. The vegetation capable of filtering impurities from the water is planted in gardens that also function as a kind of tank. The proposal is a practical and informative demonstration of how plants can assist in the treatment of rainwater.

THE MEADOW

DD’ SECTION 8

The lawn was located on the east bank, next to the river, in a quiet area of the park and that receives the morning sun. The intention is that this area can be used on contemplative and quiet activities such as yoga. On the wall of the pedestrian bridge and on its perimeter, a garden was proposed with beds that serve as benches and on the other side of the bridge, is the rain gardens. This is a way to leave the park environment more natural and to attenuate the demarcation and impact of the bridge. A sculpture was proposed as a way to create what William Whyte defined as triangulation - The process by which some external stimuli provide a connection between people and cause strangers to talk to each other. According to him, the stimulus can be from a street artist or a sculpture, for example. This section shows the relationships created as, of who walks on the bridge and sees people on the lawn and the gardens on the perimeter of the bridge. There were also proposed places to stay on the banks of the river.

THE CHILDREN’S AREA The children’s area has a playground for children from 1 to 5 years old and another for children from 6 to 12 years old. The group division was made to meet different expectations of children, those from 1 to 5 usually play with quiet activities and 6 to 12 seek challenging activities. Slides and climbing stones were designed on the rock and an interactive fountain connects the two playgrounds that are located near the local street Deputado Clério Falcão, for being a low-flow car path and being close to the residences and neighbors watching. The closing of the playground works as a bench for the parents to watch the children in a shady place.

THE MEETING PLAZA On this plaza is the real border between Andorinhas and Santa Luiza. Underneath the bridge, in the exact place where the limits meet, it was suggested the installation of the Tulip sculpture by the artist Jeff Koons. The sculpture is of colorful flowers made of mirrored material that, in this project, symbolize unity, diversity and reflection of people in the space created. It has also been proposed a staircase and elevator in the Pedestrian Bridge allows people to have direct access to the park. Gardens were designed near the structure of the bridge to bring the sense of breadth to those who walk there. In the area next to the water is a path on the edge of the Passagem River and steps facing the view of Mestre Álvaro where people may sit and relax.w

THE STUDENTS PLAZA The plaza was placed in the area around the student’s housing building. The implantation of the building was suggested next to the Avenue of greater movement and next to another high building, as a way to fit the existing landscape. The opportunity to bring students to reside in this area is important because it would be a great incentive for their interaction with residents of the neighborhoods of Andorinhas and Santa Luiza and the residence also guarantees more people using the park, moving from one place to other, using the library and creating new flows. The building has a shop on the ground floor with living areas around. At the entrance, a bicycle rental point was located at the City Hall of Vitória to facilitate the access of cyclists and stimulate the use of bicycles.

STUDENTS PLAZA VIEW

LIBRARY PLAZA VIEW 10

THE LIBRARY & THE PLAZA For the library building, in addition to the analysis made at the inventory, the park design decisions were also considered, such as main and secondary flows, subspaces and views that should be kept clear of barriers. The ground floor of the building is a big span, has a coffee-bar and mobile furniture connected to the areas around the building to form the Library Plaza. The main access ladder to the building is highlighted and a relationship has been created between the stairs and a stage positioned at the front, allowing it to be used as a place to also watch possible presentations. The library building consists of the ground floor, main floor, mezzanine and terrace. The library has part in balance on the river to exceed the margin border and allow the user to feel on the water. The library program was developed to have variety of use, with areas for study and social meetings for different ages; and was sectioned in a functional way and to value the different views that are around the building. On the mezzanine the lounge is overlooking the main floor of the library and the outside views of the Passagem River, the Bridge and the park. There are two multipurpose rooms for the community that can be closed for a class or meeting, or opened, depending on the needs. In the terrace was placed a covering similar to the one used in the Coffee and Market Plaza, so as to create an architectural connection between the spaces. The intention is that the terrace works as a continuation of the park.

THE LIBRARY The sections through the library building shows the double height on the ground floor, the main floor, mezzanine and terrace. Its noticed that the view of the Passagem River and its otherside was maintained because of the elevation of the library main floor and the span on the ground floor.

GG’ SECTION

Glass was the material chosen for facade cladding to allow library users to have view of both, the landscapes and the people in the park. Due to the insolation in the building, it was proposed to use perforated metal sheets for shading where necessary. The plates permits the view to the exterior and are detached from the facade, which is therefore ventilated, which assists in the thermal comfort inside the building. The area occupied by the plate increases according to the incidence of the afternoon sun. In the north façade a figurative symbol of flying swallows was proposed, in reference to the neighborhood Andorinhas (swallows in portuguese) and as a reference that knowledge has the power to give us wings. In this image is once again evident visual continuity and flow allowed thanks to the ground floor span. The West Facade receives the intense afternoon sun, so it was almost completely shaded. The openings were designed according to the internal program, for example, in the children’s area from the point of view of the child the view is free at the same time that the environment is shaded. In the mezzanine the areas facing west are more introspective activities.

BUSHWICK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL YEAR TYPE LOCATION

2015 Public Institutional Building New York, NY - USA

The requirement of this project was to design an Elementary School for 260 students on a site in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Bushwick is a neighborhood in Broklyn that is responding to the arrival of new residentes that have been priced out of nearby neighborhoods like Williamsburg. Newcomers are joining the existing community mainly composed by Hispanics (mosto f them from Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico) and African Americans. The site is located in a residential district, corner of Knickerbocker Avenue and Woodbine Street, it is adjoining a block that is the home of the Bushwick Playground and the Academy for Environmental Leadership High School. The Bushwick Playground is actively used in the warm seasons by the people that loves outdoor life. The new elementary school should serve as a focal point facility, providing the diverse residents with a dynamic place to meet, besides being a school. Also, was importante to find a way to correct a previously made urban planning mistake caused by a decision to place all of the playing fields of the playground at close to the same level resulted in the construction of enormous concrete retaining walls that define the sidewalk frontage of the school site. The walls effectively remove a connection between the corner of Woodbine and Knickerbocker and the nearby playground.

HIGH SCHOOL

By site analysis, was noticed that the site is already used by the surrounding community. Most of comercial buildings of the neighborhood are located on the avenues and the residential buildings are located on the streets.

So the school program was divided in two buildings. One having the public areas - library, sports, cafeteria - and another one having the private areas - classrooms and administration.

The private building was placed on the Woodbine street and the public building on Knickerbocker avenue.

A gride was created by dividing the site in equal parts of 24’.

The classroom was designed to fit up to 24 children. The idea was to create a class where professors can work on different activities happening in the same classroom and having diverse layout for desk and chairs. Also was important to have natural ventilation and light. The class has dimensions of 24’x 28’, glass doors that opens to a privite terrace and smaller windows with different heights in another wall. The smaller windows have different colors and are intercalated with bookshelves.

PRIVATE BUILDING

In the private building is the school program such as classrooms from kindergarten to fifth, special classrooms and the school staff areas. It was placed close to the street and the Academy for Environmental Leadership High School. The private building is intend to be used only by the students, teachers and school staff.

PUBLIC BUILDING

In the public building is where is located the gym and sports area, the cafeteria and its terrace, and the library. This building was located on the avenue and its volume was thought in a way to fit well on the existing landscape, respecting the scale of the buildings on the sides. On the public building is located all the activities places that will be used by students and teachers, but that can also be accessed and used by all the surrounding community.

CONTAINER HOUSE YEAR TYPE LOCATION

2013 Housing Vitória, ES - Brazil

The container house was made for a couple, Rubens and Monica, without children, who won some containers and wanted to build their house from it. They wanted a simple but comfortable home that had an office to enable them to work from home and a play area for future meetings with friends, all done at the lowest possible expense, respecting the nature existed on the site and taking advantage of its qualities. The project tried the best to meet their needs. When entering the house we are faced with a wide corridor that goes through the entire house, surrounded by glass and an artistic mullion, the hallway has a monumental aspect and serves as the main circulation integrating all the spaces and allowing the entrance of light. The office is close to the front door and can also serve as guest bedroom, faces the garden and receives the morning sun and northeast wind. Next to the office is the bathroom, which serves the couple’s guests, clients or those in a possible party. The kitchen is integrated into the dining room and other spaces allowing greater fluidity and layout changes for the couple’s parties. On the second floor is the bedroom of the couple that also has windows facing the garden, has the closet and an integrated bathroom. The grass used on the ceiling throughout the house contributes to the reduction of internal heat. On the outside the view is of the hous is a green house, which overlays the shades of vegetation planted around, the shrubs and trees, creating a symbiosis between the contrasting of the house with industrial aspect of the container and the vegetation with its natural beauty. The prominent part of the façade is to the corridor which, as already mentioned, cuts the house and stands out due to its mullions.

PAISSANDÚ BUILDING YEAR TYPE LOCATION

2018 Social Housing - Architecture Competition - team work São Paulo, SP - Brazil

The area of Largo do Paissandú, in the urban center of São Paulo, has a importante role in the history of the city. There was a building in “Largo do Paissandú” that used to be na example of brazilian modern architecture, the Wilton Paes de Almeida building. Built in 1960, it was home to companies and public institutions, but after being abandoned, it became a informal housing for people who have come to work in São Paulo and did not have financial conditions to pay for a formal housing. On May 1st of 2018, occurred a fire that destroyed the building and killed some of its dwellers. The ones that survived had their home destroyed by the fire and didin’t have another place to go. Faced with this problem, the competition asked that newly trained architects send proposals for a social housing building, with at least 200 apartments with 1 to 3 bedrooms in the same site as the previous building. The team proposal was to design a building that could be a comfortable housing and having a commercial area that could also help the residents to generate income.

Note: This project was specially challenging for me because, besides being an important issue (social housing) after a terrible tragedy (the fire that destroyed people’s home); I was working in a team of four people where I have never met two of them. We only met on skype and all of our work was developed through skype meetings because one of the teammates was living in another country and the other one was living in another state. In addition we had two weeks to developed the entire project. 20

Distribution of 10 apartments on each floor, to respect the surroundings scale.

The building is aligned to the site’s corner and a side space between the building and the next site is created.

Is made a mirror of the typical floor plan.

A central opening is placed to provide cross ventilation in all the apartments in the typical floor and in its corridors.

An opening is placed in the front facade to increase the natural ventilation inside the building.

The apartment tower is elevated on 2 floors that will contain the public program of the building.

To create a smooth transition from the public floors to the private apartment floors, was placed one floor in between that contains a terrace and areas that can be shared by all and only the residents of the building.

A skin is placed on the three main facades to work as a sunshade and to permit a ventilated facade.
