On September 21st 1999, a large earthquake woke up a Taiwanese architect, Mr. Ting-Chun Hsieh. From that day forward, he abandoned the luxurious and gorgeous style he used to work with, and turned to devote himself to the architecture in Taiwan countryside. In the summer of 2005, I followed his steps to a poor aboriginal village in Nantou County, to help building up the villagers’ hope and dreams with bricks and tiles in my hands. Since then… I strongly believe that the human being should be humble to learn from the nature. And, I can make my effort to Taiwan’s living environment with the great architecture.

MOTIVATION FOR STUDY
T
aiwan is a small island with a diverse landscape. Taipei, the city I live in is a densly populated basin surrounded by mountains with almost 7 million people living in 2,500 suare kilometers.. Although Taipei has a rich natural environment, decades of urbanization and economic development have alienated people from nature,
I
n 2008, I spent 6 months in traveling around Scandanavia , visiting Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway. I was impressed by Scandanatian architecture’s principles of eco-friendly design that integrates buildings into the natural environment. Through creating less artificial buildings that aren't in conflict with the environment, it establishes living spaces that are more comfortable and full of variety than what I was used to in Taiwan. Experiencing Scandanavian design first hand inspired me to study it so that I could follow its principles in my own architectual career.
R
eturning to Taiwan I noticed that the rich natural resources of Taipei were squandered by urban planning methods that ignore the rich natural resources surrounding it. Both in the design of buildings
and urban spaces, most citizens are accustomed to artificial construction rather than nature. Playground are covered by cement and artificial materials, and rivers are blocked by heavy embankments so that people almost forget they're there. But I believe that creative design can transform the way that people interact with their environent and bring them back into the arms of nature. My architectual studies will empower me to advocate for the adoption of the natural environment to create a friendly living space for people in cities.
the communication on class, life and culture. Then, I could stare to impetus the life innovation for finding our environment sustainability development in Taiwanese life space and give space full of nature.
I
n my next phases of study, I would like to “bring nature back to the urban. I would like to learn to include the natural elements in space design, adopt eco-friendly construction materials and preserve the natural context in architecture and urban planning.
G
lobal warming and the overconsumption of energy have become central concerns for people all over the world. Green building and environmental sustainabile architecture are important ways to respond to these challenges, but they have yet to be widely adopted in Taiwan. Taiwanese urban planning and development continue to follow outdated and environmentally wasteful models. Through studying the principles of environmentally sustainable architecture, I hope to drive innovation and reform in the living spaces of Taiwan.architecture and urban could have the concept of symbiosis with nature from 2

Vertical Village New housing type study from Taiwanese life style of mixed using As the land is limited and the density of population is high, I was trying to represent Taiwanese traditional living quality in the vertical direction. Mixed using of commercial and residential is the typical living style in Taiwan. Most people heavily depend on the convenient living functions in their neighborhood. Besides, it is also allows people to have a better interaction with others. The community will be built up in informal way. I believe that the key point of creating the vertical village is “Social Community.” Therefore, I researched a typical community, WUFENPU OF WHOLESALE CLOTHING, and figured out the rule and key elements for my transforming it on present needs. 6
Wufenpu Wufenpu is a commercial area which developed from the wholesale clothing in Taipei, Taiwan. The building is a classical Taiwanese housing type, Modern Shop House. It's combining the residential and commercial space in a building.

Street system The structure of streets defines the quality of activities in a block. Having variety of streets network is giving more interesting space experience for walkers. The scale of streets also is one of key elements for increasing the variety of space interested.
A Street
A Area
Walking Range As a commercial space from a street into an area, people would not only have one direction and one chooses of route. Therefore, people could choose a route by themselves.
Overlapping the space usage A block could provide different needs because variety of supply. Therefore, the public space could give different people for different needs. The chance of interaction amount of people and space usage of efficiency would rise.

Water Sport Arena Urban renew for city spiritual values in Gotherborg, Sweden In the past, Goteborg was developed from industry and the city was started from the harbor. When the industrial activities leaving the river bank, citizens are trying to re-find the city’s historical spirit and move back there. Thought the rebuilding the river bank, it will arouse the passing memory to the citizen and connect the both sides of the city which was divided by the river and industrial activity. Banana Pier was an industrial site where is on the opposite of riverbank. When the place was abandoned from people, plants are beginning to grow up there. Therefore, I want to utilize the concept of the plants to shape the Banana Pier into a new natural environment for citizen having activities with nature space. 18
Site survey and concept According to the materials I found on the site, the design concept was set as “new activities make the space full of vitality, like the plants growing up. The pier was a factory; there is not any natural element. However, after the factory moved away, the nature found a way back. Therefore, I believe that when we want to have new activities in a space, we need to make the space vibrant and full of vitality, and make it easy to be noticed for people.
19
Concept In the photo collage, I tried to image the future activities on this pier and hope the environment would become nature.
On the study model, I expected the shape of the ground could be the structure as well.

Making a bridge for connecting city activities First of all, I want to shape the structure to be like the plants growing up from the broken part some where between the ground and water, because this is the interesting situation I found in Banana pier. Concept of space connection
With this context, I planned to cut the land from the middle, and set a harbor to connect both sides of the river and rise ground just like plants growing up between the ground and water. Then there will be some space in the between and people will do activities in this interesting landscape.
Site plan 21
Grass Ramp Plan The grass ramp will be raised like a hill. People can have any kinds of sports on the hill with river view in the city center.
Wooden Ramp Plan The wooden ramp is extending into the river, so people could feel closer with nature such as coming to the beach. Also people can have any kinds of water sport there, for example, sail or rowing a boat..
22
City arena This space can provide the water sport and any other kinds of activities for the citizens who really enjoy the nature. The free form of landscape is coming from the plants which indicate the new life is growing. The special from is also positions the end-point of view to center of the city. It also extends the view and activity to another side of the river.
23
Programs and Materials There are two main materials I used, wool and grass, to define the character of programs. Due to the ground is different high in different place, some space could provide the space such as a beach for tacking rest or having son bath, some space which is in between of the ramps could provide a indoor activities such as coffee shop or performers’ stage . There are many possibilities for citizen’s life activity.
Detail and Structure The structure of grass ramp will be made with concrete. The landscape will be created with different high to be more close to the nature ground.
This part is the interface of two ramps with two different structure and material. The connection part will be made up with the mixing.
The structure of wooden ground will be made with truss. The landscape will be created with different high to be more close to natural ground. People can have activities and take rest in this arena.

Taipei City Museum Arranging the history context by films and creating a public space for citizen’s daily life The city museum’s role is not only an exhibition venue for cultural or historical relics, but also a dynamic live platform containing citizen's living activities. Because Taipei has a relative brief urban history, we need to find the way to create more events or memory while raising the history value. Through the films, people can easily learn the city’s historical stories and background in a vivid way. Therefore, I utilized films to tell Taipei stories in the museum and reflected them to the real landscape of Taipei. The viewers could have stronger perception on the city’s story and history.
26
History as the stratum showing the old and new The process of history development is like the stratum which has been accumulated for long time. When we see its section, the new layer is still keeping accumulating. Therefore, a museum should serve as a history display space and also a new story record platform at the same timeme time.
The CONCEPT of the space arrangement I created two circulations and WEAVE space of history exhibition and activity space which are connected in reality.

The important events, stories and staff have strong connection with the city’s history and development. According to the description of the city in the films, about the life style and living attitude, people could learn and experience the history background about the city easier. MONTAGE / in architecture language means construct and assemble. It is frequently applied in three kinds of art area. It's also a collage technique on films editing about the space, place and people. Montage is one of approaches that direct describes a story with a series of short frame and combines them with an arrangement by different views, place and distance...etc.
Montage films in architecture is a interesting editing approach to create a not existed space with different shoots
Motnage space Because of the history space and story was in the past, not exists now or in the future, creating the old story space by Montage is a way to increase the real feeling in the museum. On the other hand, creating the interest of the process on the display line is also helping the museum to become a popular public spot.

Eco Manufacturing City The international competition for Idea of Action, Kaohsiung It's my first competition I discussed how to utilize the concept of sustainability to give a new vision for an urban planning. The idea is creating eco-space for Kaohsiung city center, which had developed from industry, and people would live with nature environment. First, the eco-planning not only could provide a biology environment quality and fresh city image but also expects that the urban could provide a nature education environment for students, and cooperating with schools to keep the city space sustainability.
35
In the past
In the future
Kaohsiung had developed from industry in south of Taiwan. The quality of the water and air was very bad. After the industry was not flourishing, more and more citizens expects that they should have better environment in live.
Kaohsiung has very rich natural environment surrounding. I believe that the city could have very conformable environment because the concept of "Eco-Manufacturing."
Importing the ecological gene from "Ecological Network" Urban Strateges 1. Linking nature could introduce ecological gene into city center. 2. Adopting public city space could improve the green space sustainability by school. 3. Saving the recycle transportation distance could reduce the carbon dioxide emission 4. Infilling more nature in city space could strengthen ecological network and give comfortable environment. 5. Giving creative green idea for live space could provide more biological habitats in city center 36

Strategy 1 Linking nature could introduce ecological gene into city center. According to the Kaohsiung city map, there are a hill, Chou Shan Zoo, a Love River, some parks and campus in the city. If nature and biological gene could be connected from those points, the city would be a best habitat for biodiversity.
City Center
Social Resource Network schools
Strategy 2 Adopting public city space could improve the green space sustainability by school. School could adopt a city place, for example, sidewalk or street, to help government to take care of the ecological environment. Also, the process could be part of education for developing students’ basic concept of environment sustainability.
37
Living Waste Reusing System Strategy 3 Saving the recycle transportation distance could reduce the carbon dioxide emission.
New Food Chain for reducing the waste and resource According to the research of the original food chain and wastes transportation, we found that people didn’t consider the place of people in the food chain and waste lots of social resource for saving nature resource. Therefore, we believe that people could reduce amount of waste because the city planer import the concept of "Living Waste Reusing System." That people could reduce the resource needs because of the behavior of daily life-

40
The Concept of City Section Strategy 5 Most of people like to drive cars and motorbikes in Kaohsiung city because the weather is too hot in most of time and the roads are too wide. So people don't like walking and use cars or motorbike often.
With the new idea, if city could have more trees and decrease the width of roads, organisms and people would have better walking environment in the city.
Furthermore, if the city could have a good recycle system in building with natural environment, it would help to reduce living waste.
In the future, people could live with fresh space and the city would have better nature environment. 41
Giving creative green idea for live space could provide more biological habitats in city center.

43
Site survey on natural environment According to the research, the landscape of the campus is like a small hill and there is a road goes around with two sides of it with different altitude levels. The weather is not very friendly because it's too hot in the summer and too cool in the winter. In a year, there is almost a quarter of year is rain day.
Therefore, as the weather is wet, I have to consider the son direction which was studying it by software. And, I divided the time of a year into two periods by semesters of study time.

Cooperation build Project: workshop in TKU Site: Nantou, Taiwan period: Jun. 2004 Architect: Hsieh, Ying-Chun Office: Atelier-3 In 1999 Sep. 21, there is a powerful earthquake toppled buildings in Taiwan. The architect, Hsieh, Ying-Chun was staring work on building the "house" for people who lose their house on that earthquake in Nantou. In 2004, when I was a second frade student, a professor told us that we can go to help them to build a house for people. In that summer, I learned how a house can be built with lower price, local materials and simple construct that people can build it with non-professional skills.

The bridegs are very important for connecting people's activities between city center and suburban. However, the commercial activities always be distant from them.
PROJECT 1 Parking Desire Site: Taipei, Taiwan period: Final Project in TKU, 2006 Work: Individual work
Loyang Parking is not only located during the 3 main commercial center but beside the river. There is a bridge entry on the building. It is a key that people can drive car go to the city through it from suburban directly.
SITE MODEL
Therefore, in this project, I designed a sub-commercial space for drivers.
CONCEPT MODEL
There is a parking building not only beside those bridges but also connects together in the sky. Therefore, I though that if the activity could provite for drivers, the space could be different.
