PETROLUL FOOTBALL ACADEMY stud. arh. VLAD ALEXANDRU VOICU DIPLOMA PROJECT - “ION MINCU” UNIVERSITY OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBANISM BUCHAREST, 2016

INTRODUCTION Opting for this project represents the answer to a current issue in the Romanian football landscape. For the last 5 years, in Romania, we have seen important investments in sports amenities such as stadiums, but not that many facilities to promote sports and academic performance, so essential in developing sports skills, even at the end of the sports career. In this way, the pipeline of native football players is considerably inferior from the performance point of view, in comparison to other european countries. This situation also justifies the poor level of performance for the romanian football landscape. At national level, there are football schools with the aim of initiating youth in the world of football, putting aside their education. This project proposes a football academy for Petrolul Ploiești F.C. This romanian football club has been established in 1924, being one of the first football clubs in the country. The exemple of Petrolul F.C. strengthens the problem presented above, because also here has been invested in a modern stadium but the education and performance has been neglected.

„Ilie Oană” Stadium, Ploiești

1

THE GEOGRAPHIC LOCALIZATION The geographic localization of the football club, more exactly in Ploiesti town, implies advantages such as: • Geographic position in the north of Romania’s Capital, Bucharest; • The town is situated 40km away from the biggest airport in Romania: Otopeni Airport; • The town represents an important traffic point which favorises the link with romanian as well as european cities. Due to the fact that sports world is continuously expanding, the localization of the football club, in such an accesible place, eases frequent movement in tours, training camps or experience exchanges.

2

The Academy will be placed at the city entrance, in the south part, being considered „The main access gate”. This area is really important, being a big attraction on the outskirts of the city thanks to the already existing academic, cultural and sports role. We can find here Petroleum and Gas University, College of Chemistry, Military Highschool, a Tennis Club and the Hippodrome. Another important aspect to mention, is the fact that thanks to its proximity to Bucharest, this outlying part of the city has an enormous potential of development. The building is visible due to its localisation on this site, can be seen even from the city entrance but also from the hippodrome’s stands placed opposite the academy.

THE SITE - FUNCTIONAL AREA (high schools, university, dorms & sport)

CONTEXT SCHEME HIERARCHICAL ACCESSES

The presence of certain facilities that complement each other, working together in the same area is facilitating the creation of a core spot for sports and recreation meant to configure an important point in Ploiești, becoming an integrated park with multiple functions: Leisure, culture, commercial and sports.

4

CONCEPT 1. FUNCTIONAL NETWORKING From a functional point of view, the construction is divided in 3 buildings, each one having a specific role and volumetry related to proximities: • First - a building dedicated to education in relation with Petroleum and Gas University; • Second - an accomodation building nearby the University dorms; • And Third - a stadium visually connected to the Hippodrome.

2. SIZE The units are organized and displayed in relation with the surroundings, their sizes being in accordance with the existing buildings; The built spaces are fragmented towards the nearby residential area and a green buffer zone (sports fields and gardens as community parks) separates the three units from the residential area.

3. VOLUMETRIC CONCEPT Talking about volumetric concept, in order to add a sense of rhythm to the perspective when browsing the main street, I tried to gradually bring the spatiality to human scale by introducing a ‘socket’, which works as a plaza that gathers all the architectural objects around it. The main access point to all units is provided by the plaza. Because the stadium has a long side towards the main street, in order to animate the facade there was preserved the socket concept, but at a much smaller scale, fragmenting the volume by combining it with green outdoor areas. On the side, looking towards the street there is a strip of public spaces with individual access, served by aforementioned green sockets for a better use. In order for the link between the 2 sports poles ( on the one hand the academy, on the other hand the hippodrome ) to be more powerful, it has been created a shared space as a pedestrian connection.

5

INTERVENTION STRATEGY The submitted project will be focused on creating an environment suitable for Petrolul Ploiesti football club needs, for the community needs, and also for the kids who practice this sport at an amateur/professional level. The Academy will be specialized both in scientific and sports research as well as in the professional development of the football players. As far as the facilities are concerned, these are the following: accommodation for young football players from outside the municipality, professional training programs, and permanent health monitoring, medical, psychological and nutritional assistance.

6

7

“ A UNIQUE PLACE TO TEACH AND LEARN THE COMPLETE CULTURE OF FOOTBALL. “

ON SITE The Academy is able to gather 240 trainees. For their sports instruction, they will be divided in 4 categories: • • • •

7-10 years - Basic training period 11-14 years - Development period 15-19 years - Performance period Under 23 - Transition to senior squad

As far as the academic studies are concerned, the school accommodates pupils over 15 years old. It has been taken into consideration the fact that pupils decide upon a sports career after the age of 15. For the younger athletes, they will be studying in local schools. Due to the fact that not all the students will graduate as performance athletes, they will at least have the opportunity to start a career in this field: as coach, manager or in sports medicine.

The maximum number of accommodated people is 80. Accommodation is being granted to social cases, children from outside town, children who want to remain in a boarding school regime, visiting teams or training camps. As a result of a study conducted for several academies, it has been established that the advantage of the accommodation building is in fact the real integration of football and academic studies within students’ everyday life. The stadium represents a private investment of public utility. This space will accommodate only academy organized events.

For a permanent functioning there are several proposals such as: urban, sports, cultural facilities and leisure time activities. The exterior area has been arranged as a meeting place for the community, boosting the social development of the area. Through the proposed architecture, the football club becomes a point of attraction, boosting the economic development as well as the urban regeneration of the area. Building the football academy in an industrial area meant urban regeneration through new work places, attracting new investors and improving the environment through providing green spaces.

FROM AN URBAN POINT OF VIEW, THIS TYPE OF COMPLEX HELPS AT REGENERATING THE OUTSKIRTS, AS WELL AS PARTICIPATING IN THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE CITY.

ARCHITECTURE For the EDUCATION BUILDING - The plaza has a great influence in creating covered passing way at the ground level, suitable for various events. The ACCOMMODATION unit, placed between the educational building and the stadium, is organized as it follows: • The public spaces are oriented towards the plaza; • The private spaces towards the garden and training sports fields; Using a vertical relation between levels, the accommodation rooms are situated around a central atrium that brings natural light to the interior and helps with the ventilation.

The STADIUM, the largest of the three units, is oriented with the long facade towards the main access road, facing the open space of the hippodrome. The functional areas are the following: • Retail area - towards the main road; • Swimming pool at ground level - towards the parking lot, athletic medicine center and fitness centre at mezzanine level; • A lounge area, between the tiers and the outside training sports fields; • The athletes looker rooms, underneath the lounge area, at the basement level Arranging the fields and the surrounding areas with mineral pavement, vegetal elements and shading has the aim of animating the area as well as gathering the community, creating a strong relationship between football players and the local community. FROM AN ECONOMIC POINT OF VIEW, TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THAT THE ACADEMY IS FORMED BY VARIOUS BUILDINGS, WITH DIFFERENT FUNCTIONALITIES, A PHASE-OUT PERIOD WOULD BE MUCH NEEDED IN ORDER TO COMPLETE THE CONSTRUCTION.

ARCHITECTURE A series of terraces fragments the spaces, brings natural light to the interior and helps with the ventilation, adding to the sustainability of the building.

A buffer zone connecting all three volumes of the academy placed between the public and the private spaces at the mezzanine level.
