PETROLUL FOOTBALL ACADEMY location: Ploiești diploma project coordonating: conf. dr. arh. Anca Mitrache; asist. dr. arh. Anda Ioana Sfinteș; prof. dr. ing. Mircea Crișan year: 2016 article published on aasarchitecture.com
INTRODUCTION Opting for this project represents the answer to a current issue in the Romanian football landscape. For the last 5 years, in Romania, we have seen important investments in sports amenities such as stadiums, but not that many facilities to promote sports and academic performance, so essential in developing sports skills, even at the end of the sports career. In this way, the pipeline of native football players is considerably inferior from the performance point of view, in comparison to other european countries. This situation also justifies the poor level of performance for the romanian football landscape. At national level, there are football schools with the aim of initiating youth in the world of football, putting aside their education. This project proposes a football academy for Petrolul Ploiești F.C. This romanian football club has been established in 1924, being one of the first football clubs in the country. The exemple of Petrolul F.C. strengthens the problem presented above, because also here has been invested in a modern stadium but the education and performance has been neglected.
„Ilie Oană” Stadium, Ploiești

THE SITE - FUNCTIONAL AREA (high schools, university, dorms & sport)
CONTEXT SCHEME HIERARCHICAL ACCESSES
The presence of certain facilities that complement each other, working together in the same area is facilitating the creation of a core spot for sports and recreation meant to configure an important point in Ploiești, becoming an integrated park with multiple functions: Leisure, culture, commercial and sports.
7
CONCEPT 1. FUNCTIONAL NETWORKING From a functional point of view, the construction is divided in 3 buildings, each one having a specific role and volumetry related to proximities: • First - a building dedicated to education in relation with Petroleum and Gas University; • Second - an accomodation building nearby the University dorms; • And Third - a stadium visually connected to the Hippodrome.
2. SIZE The units are organized and displayed in relation with the surroundings, their sizes being in accordance with the existing buildings; The built spaces are fragmented towards the nearby residential area and a green buffer zone (sports fields and gardens as community parks) separates the three units from the residential area.
3. VOLUMETRIC CONCEPT Talking about volumetric concept, in order to add a sense of rhythm to the perspective when browsing the main street, I tried to gradually bring the spatiality to human scale by introducing a ‘socket’, which works as a plaza that gathers all the architectural objects around it. The main access point to all units is provided by the plaza. Because the stadium has a long side towards the main street, in order to animate the facade there was preserved the socket concept, but at a much smaller scale, fragmenting the volume by combining it with green outdoor areas. On the side, looking towards the street there is a strip of public spaces with individual access, served by aforementioned green sockets for a better use. In order for the link between the 2 sports poles ( on the one hand the academy, on the other hand the hippodrome ) to be more powerful, it has been created a shared space as a pedestrian connection.
8
INTERVENTION STRATEGY The submitted project will be focused on creating an environment suitable for Petrolul Ploiesti football club needs, for the community needs, and also for the kids who practice this sport at an amateur/professional level. The Academy will be specialized both in scientific and sports research as well as in the professional development of the football players. As far as the facilities are concerned, these are the following: accommodation for young football players from outside the municipality, professional training programs, and permanent health monitoring, medical, psychological and nutritional assistance.
9
10
“ A UNIQUE PLACE TO TEACH AND LEARN THE COMPLETE CULTURE OF FOOTBALL. “
ON SITE The Academy is able to gather 240 trainees. For their sports instruction, they will be divided in 4 categories: • • • •
7-10 years - Basic training period 11-14 years - Development period 15-19 years - Performance period Under 23 - Transition to senior squad
As far as the academic studies are concerned, the school accommodates pupils over 15 years old. It has been taken into consideration the fact that pupils decide upon a sports career after the age of 15. For the younger athletes, they will be studying in local schools. Due to the fact that not all the students will graduate as performance athletes, they will at least have the opportunity to start a career in this field: as coach, manager or in sports medicine.
The maximum number of accommodated people is 80. Accommodation is being granted to social cases, children from outside town, children who want to remain in a boarding school regime, visiting teams or training camps. As a result of a study conducted for several academies, it has been established that the advantage of the accommodation building is in fact the real integration of football and academic studies within students’ everyday life. The stadium represents a private investment of public utility. This space will accommodate only academy organized events.
For a permanent functioning there are several proposals such as: urban, sports, cultural facilities and leisure time activities. The exterior area has been arranged as a meeting place for the community, boosting the social development of the area. Through the proposed architecture, the football club becomes a point of attraction, boosting the economic development as well as the urban regeneration of the area. Building the football academy in an industrial area meant urban regeneration through new work places, attracting new investors and improving the environment through providing green spaces.
SITE PLAN
11
FROM AN URBAN POINT OF VIEW, THIS TYPE OF COMPLEX HELPS AT REGENERATING THE OUTSKIRTS, AS WELL AS PARTICIPATING IN THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE CITY.
ARCHITECTURE For the EDUCATION BUILDING - The plaza has a great influence in creating covered passing way at the ground level, suitable for various events. The ACCOMMODATION unit, placed between the educational building and the stadium, is organized as it follows: • The public spaces are oriented towards the plaza; • The private spaces towards the garden and training sports fields; Using a vertical relation between levels, the accommodation rooms are situated around a central atrium that brings natural light to the interior and helps with the ventilation.
The STADIUM, the largest of the three units, is oriented with the long facade towards the main access road, facing the open space of the hippodrome. The functional areas are the following: • Retail area - towards the main road; • Swimming pool at ground level - towards the parking lot, athletic medicine center and fitness centre at mezzanine level; • A lounge area, between the tiers and the outside training sports fields; • The athletes looker rooms, underneath the lounge area, at the basement level Arranging the fields and the surrounding areas with mineral pavement, vegetal elements and shading has the aim of animating the area as well as gathering the community, creating a strong relationship between football players and the local community. GROUND FLOOR PLAN
13
FROM AN ECONOMIC POINT OF VIEW, TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THAT THE ACADEMY IS FORMED BY VARIOUS BUILDINGS, WITH DIFFERENT FUNCTIONALITIES, A PHASE-OUT PERIOD WOULD BE MUCH NEEDED IN ORDER TO COMPLETE THE CONSTRUCTION.
ARCHITECTURE A series of terraces fragments the spaces, brings natural light to the interior and helps with the ventilation, adding to the sustainability of the building.

A buffer zone connecting all three volumes of the academy placed between the public and the private spaces at the mezzanine level.

OFFICE BUILDING location: Str. Berzei, nr.88, Bucharest coordonating: prof. dr. arh. Dan Corneliu Șerban; dr. arh. Ana Vesa; dr. arh. Irina Florea year: 2015
38
PROJECT DESCRIPTION The project proposes an office building at the intersection of str. Berzei and str. Gara de Nord. This building becomes a signal when driving the boulevard from South (House of Parliament) to North (Victoriei Square), a focus for the intersection. Marking the main access is achieved through a cut to the corner of the intersection volume. The ground floor is developed as a leisure space (a cafeteria, a shop and expo spaces) for employees and for people from outside the office building, space that interrelates with the environment - backyard, following the mezzanine include conference rooms, a foyer and a bar reserved exclusively for those from this level. Office spaces developed on 5 levels features a flexible interior space thanks to frame structure, also opening to the north terraces on different levels creates a strong relationship between inside and outside, but promotes and run an indirect lights, constant, pleasant for activity. For sunscreens have proposed doubling curtain facade with a mesh (perforated plate) whose image varies depending the cardinal points: on the South perforation are reduced, while the facades sides from the East, West and North, perforation increases.

COLLECTIVE DWELLINGS location: Str. Mântuleasa, Bucharest team project: Dan Alexandru Roșu; Vlad Alexandru Voicu coordonating: prof. dr. arh. Anca Nicoleta Otoiu; dr. arh. Cristina Constantin; dr. arh. Ștefan Radocea year: 2013
PROJECT DESCRIPTION The proposed place for the topic of collective housing consists in a bold site in a historic and protected area in the centre of Bucharest, on 7-9 Mantuleasa street. This place has both a historic and memorial value, as the school where the writer Mircea Eliade went as a child was built here, but was demolished in 2009. Mircea Eliade’s novel “The Old Man and The Bureaucrats” (Pe strada Mantuleasa) tells a story of this place, combined with magic, folk tales and myths. The site has a 2730 square-metre area, resulted from combining the site where the school was and to neighbouring sites, with 75.6 m frontage on Mantuleasa street and 3.5 m frontage on Paleologu street. Six very old chestnut trees and part of the original fence made of forged iron are the only elements remaining from the old school. Densification and modernization are inevitable even in the old protected areas of the city, but through our proposition we wanted to take into account the place’s atmosphere and history, providing a civilized densification.
Our first idea was to create a volume that is broken into two oblong bodies parallel to Mantuleasa street, that stick to the blind walls when necessary and retreat on the open sides. The volumes communicate with each other through a series of spaces that come together to support the idea of dwelling together: large gangways that dematerialize the ground floor front’s continuity, shared terraces and common rooms. The ground floor is mainly a public space, a special feature of the buildings in the centre of the city from the 19th century, and provides housing related services that encourage socialisation: a reading place - a small library, a café, a confectionery, a small flower shop, a gym and an afterschool, which respond to the needs of the tenants, but are also addressed to the outsiders.

Apartments descriptions The topic imposed from the beginning a certain number of apartments, with given areas, which we wanted to be as different and flexible as possible. We provided a huge variety of types: studios, 2, 3 and 4-room apartments and duplexes, each of them with a terrace or a balcony. Our desire to have a large variety and flexibility made virtually no two identical apartments in the whole building, which led to an extraordinary variation and individualization of living spaces.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Subject description: an unstructured area, resulted after an attempt of enlarging the Boulevard Buzesti-Berzei to meet the requirements of the heavy traffic. Now, the accent falls on the car! From the obvious need of paying more atention to the pedestrians, evolved the idea of an alternative green route for cyclists and pedestrians through the traditional city web. The route is meant to make you “dig” into the old radial web and the old building and ruins that are visible on the route will not be demolished or drastically changed, but intead, they will be converted into coffee shops, showrooms, art displays as much as possible. Unfortunately, many important monuments from this area were demolished, the most important of those being Piata Matache. Their memory will be kept alive with the help of an wireframe that outlines their silhouette, much like a ghost building. The wireframe will spread itself, like a spider’s web, on the whole alternative route, leading you and gradually transforming into exposition spaces and sitting areas.

One popular sport these days is rock climbing. For those who want to train in an urban environment or simply can’t make the trip to the mountains, wall climbing is a perfect substitute. Climbing is a sport in which you improve steadily and it boosts your confidence.By practicing it, you get a full-body workout, and by 2020 it will also be an Olympic Sport. To design a training ground for wall climbing, we decided to use the entire city as a sport-facility, using an urban element that architects and urban planners struggle to deal with: blind walls. Being a result of either demolitions or urban regulations, blind walls play an important role in the evolution of the city as they shape it’s image. By using them for the design, exercising gains a social value as it improves not only the well being of the individual, but that of the community as well. The climbing surface is flexible: a concave module (you can grab it, pull yourself), a convex one (providing more feet room) and a flat one (making the climbing harder).By combining them you can increase/decrease the difficulty level. The composite modules are fixated with a clipping system by a grid that entangles the blind walls. This design is healing at an urban level and makes the individual, community and city healthier.

BERCENI HOUSE (GROUND FLOOR + ATTIC) location: jud. Prahova, com. Berceni personal architecture project in progress year: 2015-2017
PROJECT DESCRIPTION The project involved house extension and refurbishment, repartitioning, consolidation and attic dwelling - proposals, concept design, execution, construction, site supervision. Previous construction phases: 1. 1961 2. Extension 1970s 3. Extension 1993 The aim of this project was to reshape the interior spaces of an existing family house, a staircase design for access to the attic and the roof refurbishment for the attic. The project wants to be a conclusion for all the previous construction phases, giving the existing ensemble a unitary, contemporary appearance, with a rural touch. Furthermore, a new volume was built, that gathers the central heating, a cellar and a garage. All extensions were made with the preservation of the existing vernacular typology - the wagon house with annexes built along the plot, added to the main volume.

RESIDENTIAL HOUSES location: jud. Prahova, com. Pleașa Heveco S.R.L. architecture project team: arch. Emil Popa, arch. Cristian Bursuc proposals year: 2017
Addressing such a theme involved besides building up a functional scheme that can provide the flexibility to address as many potential users as possible, a demographic and economic analysis so that we can be sure that the houses will be sold rapidly. The research also involved creating balanced visual effects in the context of a limited budget. It should be mentioned that the study also took into account the possibility of extending the residential district in the future with new types of houses, integrating into the natural and built landscape and addressing new types of clients with higher financial possibilities. For this first stage we proposed several dwellings with areas between 70 and 170 square meters, both with ground and/or ground floor and upper floor. The proposals want to be as efficient as possible, with as little circulation as possible and large living spaces. You can see the possibility of opening the kitchen to the living room. Furthermore, the night and day areas are clearly separated and have a fluid relation with the natural context.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION This projects complements the study on the residential dwellings program. Currently, this project awaits an investor for completion, but phases such as concept, preliminary designs and preparation are finalized. During these phases, the collective dwellings program was thoroughly documented, studying many plans and projects – from standardized projects from the communist period to contemporary award-winning projects. Furthermore, the project was designed taking into account the current financial evolution in our country, in order to provide an economically sustainableprogram. The concept’s definition – plans, geometry, renderings – along with the cost estimation, planning the investment development and the list of construction materials quantities, composed a presentation and documentation file for finding investors.
