Ireni, ~ija je ku}a, i moj dom, po~etak Rekonstrukcija To Irena, whose house, my home too, has been the beginning of the Reconstructions

REKONSTRUKCIJE Tatjana Milosavljevi}

– Zato {to on prostor zauzima materijalom, oblikom, plasti~kom temom, prilago|ava ga sebi, odnosno, svojoj ideji i potrebi da ka`e ono {to `eli.

Recollection – Reconstruction, zaista!

1 Anet Mesa`e, Re~ za re~, 2006. 2 Pattern (engl.) – obrazac, mustra 3 Gabriel Orosko: „I like to see my work as the result or a by-product or a left-over of specific situations.“ 4 Od najstarijih vremena najosnovniji, skoro geometrijski apstraktni obrasci smatrani su sna`nim simbolima, posebno simbolima besmrtnosti, jedinstva, ravnote`e.

RECONSTRUCTIONS Tatjana Milosavljevi}

The latest art project by Vladimir Rankovi}, multimedia artist and lecturer at the Faculty of Philology and Arts at the University of Kragujevac is named ''Reconstructions'', and we might add – ''Recollections'', hindsights, i.e. Reconstructions, Recollections, because we belong to generations raised and educatedon principles of transnationalism, multiculturalism, co-existence and interdisciplinarity upon which we formed our criteria both as human beings and as professionals. That is why we sometimes find it easier to convey precisely what we mean and want in a single, universal phrase. This is an artist of not only formal but also vast and versatile erudition. Everything Vladimir Rankovi} has done so far, every artistic notion he has brought about before us in his works is both subtle and skillful. It is inevitably inherent to his obviously long-term, perhaps even permanent research and social, psychological, emotional, artistic and personal context, although not necessarily in that order. To put it briefly, both micro and macro plan! Why do we claim that Rankovi} conceives and carries out his artistic projects (the phrase is indeed worn out, but in this case the only accurate one) toward that space in which the context is to be exhibited or introduced? Because he conquers the space with his material, form and plastic theme; he bends it to his will, his idea and his need to say what he wants. Rankovi} quotes: ''Mostly, I believe an artist doesn't create something, but is there to sort through, to show, to point out what already exists, to put it into form and sometimes reformulate it''.1 He therefore adheres to his credo of adopting details – or patterns, as he himself calls them – from everyday life, by applying no aesthetic criterion (though not excluding it, either), he arranges, combines, possibly gives a new meaning, because he singles them out based on his sentiment and (emotional) context, as well.

Rankovi} multiplies the details in question: wallpaper samples, ceramic tiles, curtain and bed sheet motifs to such an extent that they themselves become new motifs. And as you are reading the author's explanations on where each sample has been taken and from which present or past living space it originates, as the patterns reoccur to an excessive degree, up to tenfold, you slowly begin to realize that what you perceive as multiplication – repetition, development, evolution – is actually what the author himself describes as ''perpetual appearing and disappearing''. It is in this way that the emotional context becomes clear, the context in which every wall of a gallery becomes an objective space that comes with an inevitable interaction where emotions hold sway over rationality. That is why the author calls it ''partial reconstruction''. One contemporary artist claims to like seeing his work as the result or a by-product or a left-over of a specific situation.2 That is precisely the way in which Rankovi}, through his work, revives and determines sequences from his own life, which stand before us restored in a different context. It would be pointless to analyze the visual aspect – the pattern is here and it is (industrially) set, but when it comes to placing it in a specific context, the very thought of processing and applying it is what the author is intrigued by and he has dedicated the entirety of his artistic efforts to that. He therefore relies on the symbolic strategy from the outset, while narrative elements appear from the background and again in the end we cannot help but think that this too is an abstract context.3 We may therefore regard these ''Reconstructions'' by Vladimir Rankovi} through all their segments/fragments as archeological findings as well, as signs and notes made on a personal level. They create an entirely different, alternate dimension of space; they turn time into a narrative and establish a link both Here and There. Recollection – Reconstruction, indeed!

1 Annette Messager, Word for Word, 2006 2 Gabriel Orozsco 3 The most elementary, almost geometrical abstract patterns have been regarded, since time immemorial, as powerful symbols especially of immortality, unity and equilibrium.
