A creative chatter

The working method of the school of Bassano is based on the principle of creative chatter, open to diversity, in order to address precisely the rapid changes in the social, economic and environmental field.

Generating innovators

The development of human resources is the real purpose of our projects. The project is intended as a generative force for new opportunities, a collaboration open to different cultures and to all stakeholders. The students will develop processes to produce creative solutions, designed to overcome the complex challenges they face. The key to managing the diversity of goals and their continuous evolution is the organization of activities through diversified and integrated platforms, consisting of public administration, entrepreneurs, researchers, citizens.

Stimulating a radical creative collaboration between stakeholders

We work in partnership with businesses, nonprofit organizations, public administration: this circular method allows students to understand what it means to design outside the classroom and helps our partners to intensify their innovation strategy. We propose an innovative methodology that combines analytical and creative approaches, and requires collaboration between different disciplines. This process, called “design thinking, it combines the methods of engineering and of planning, it exploits the ideas of the art world, the tools of the social sciences and the visions of the economy. The student becomes familiar with these processes, customizes them, internalizes them, and applies them to his plans: this means learning by doing.

Esploring new shared solutions

The student is called to solve a problem, but also to define its nature. He is stimulated towards a strong curiosity and a strong spirit of collaboration, with the aim of overcoming the already assimilated experience. The teachers illustrate different points of view, offering a mix of contributions from different disciplines and problem-solving solutions. Insted of working in groups on the same project, the students address different aspects of innovation, exploiting their own differences as a creative engine. They work in the field, to develop empathy with the users of the project, discovering their real needs. The result is the production of a series of prototypes which will receive a feedback from the population. Each phase of the work explores unexpected visions and solutions. The process of design thinking is the glue that holds together the diversity of stakeholders, allowing students to continuously develop intuitive ideas and lateral thinking.

Intelligent School Design The design of knowledge and the application of D.M. 11/04/2013

The new strategies of building and urban design are experienced through the contents of the document Europe 2020, the objectives of the 8th Framework Program and the application of D.M. 11/04/2013 “Guidelines for sustainable design of school facilities. These documents and laws allow you to devise innovative proposals, which are basic structures of new prototypes for urban and economic regeneration.

Philosophy

Knowledge is the engine of development because it can increase the capacity of human resources. This is the primary goal of the design. The project will be a generator of several opportunities for the growth of cohesion, resilience, productivity, connecting a local urban area to the world.

Why Bassano del Grappa

The city of Bassano del Grappa has an innovative and entrepreneurial foundation and it is engaged in the experimentation of new forms of knowledge and work. Regarding natural and physical resources it has an important historical and natural heritage; regarding the processes of dematerialization it has a free wi-fi network in the historic center. It houses the Urban Center, a space for shared dialogue and discussion on urban development.

Operative structure

The course is part of a structure subdivided into: the structure of production, the structure of teaching, and the stakeholder forum: --Structure of production: it comprehends all the activities designed to produce interactive database and automatic design tools; --Structure of teaching: it is divided into online and face-to-face activities. The activities have tools for distance storage (online databases and folders) and tools for dialogue (blogs, social net, webinars, skype). Through these tools, the dialogue is 24h and students are encouraged to be proactive and creative. The face-to-face activities are focused on the design workshops and integrated with the final presentation of the prjects to the stakeholders; --stakeholder forum: the learning activities are supported by a committee of partners coming from the public administration and professional associations, with the aim of increasing the feasibility of the projects and generate new ones.

The course as a force for urban innovation

The specialization course “Intelligent school design” aims to develop: --innovative engagement opportunities to involve stakeholders; --a platform for local businesses to penetrate new markets; --skilled job opportunities for young people.

The new dimension of the market

Never before the international market of design and urban regeneration has been so dynamic: Asia has opened the opportunity to build more than 200 new city of 2 million inhabitants each; the EU has launched a campaign for urban regeneration through new smart infrastructures; President Obama launched the “Presidential Climate Action Project”; the Australian Government with the document “State of Australian Cities” is programming the regeneration of the city. These programs are accompanied by strong measures to support innovation, linked to the renewal of knowledge and business. As a matter of fact you can considerate the five-year plan for a metabolic development in China, the program “Clean Revolution” and the smart corridor Mumbai-New Delhi, the EU programs “Europe 2020” and “Horizon 2020” and the “Design Innovation Platform for Europe”, the U.S. program “Brain Initiative”.

New rules to access new market sectors

The rules of contemporary design have little to do with historical ones. At the end of the last millennium the Wuppertal Institute launched a slogan that changed the way we see economic development: “Make tons kilowatthours redundant and not people.” If the problem is the limit of resources, a consequence of the increase in consumption of raw materials due to the growth of income and population, the strategic variable for industries shifts from the centrality of labor productivity to the saving of raw material and energy production from renewable sources. Industries have to radically innovate and invest in research and dissemination of knowledge, as set out by the agenda of international Conventions (see the following table).

The opportunity for the business community of Bassano del Grappa

These premises lead to the proposal of an integrated platform “Bassano for Sustainability” whose mission is to: --enhance the operation of the business, administrative, cultural systems, to extend the connectivity of the enterprises of the Northeast Region; --develop big data to support human capital and disseminate the global potential of the Northeast Region; --organize the participation to international design competitions; --begin an action for the redevelopment of the structures of knowledge, in symmetry with “Horizon 2020” objectives and the D.M. 11.4.2013.

Launching the project Bassano Start Up City

The theme of knowledge engages with the issue of economic development thanks to the project “Bassano Start Up City. This project is an innovative prototype of urban creative development, replicable from the regional to the international scale, based on the proposal of an industrious generative sector. Starting with the new models of school organization the projects integrates them with the knowledge of creative enterprises, increasing the human capacity thanks to new patterns of production value. The project is based on the experience of a local finance institute for the promotion of spin-offs, and intends to expand it further. This project begins with the interpretation of national and international best practices of creative urban planning, in order to subsequently assess the potential application of innovative tools in the school system. The project will develop an operative agenda that will define the actions of the stakeholders involved and the structure of the crowdfunding action to raise financial resources. The project is thought both for professional training and for the regeneration of manufacturing and finance firms.

Launching the project Bassano on the cloud

This project aims to provide the cultural and entrepreneurial system of Bassano del Grappa with an interactive high-capacity memory. The purpose is to give international transparency to the social, environmental and productive city potential. The projects enables urban infrastructure development and is intended to increase the penetration of Bassano on international markets and to lower the cost of production due to the free provision of on-line software. It is intended to be an evolution of the wifi network, adding to this basic infrastructure a new high-capacity. The players involved come from the production and the service system. They intend to implement basic urban infrastructure with high added value.
