FROM THE DIGITAL REVOLUTION TO THE BIOLOGICAL ONE Collaborative design at the MIT Media Lab Linda Comerlati

ABSTRACT The most famous laboratoy of MIT Chicago is the Media LAb, founded by Nicholas Negroponte and Jerome Wiesner almost thirty years ago. After the first phase focusing on the digital revolution (’80s and ‘90s), the Lab experimented the interaction between atoms and bits (’90s-2000). Nowadays the new technological paradigm is biology. The study of natural structures enables scientists to build generative softwares, that can interact with human mind. The global community is the reference subject: the aim of the Lab is to create open source softwares so that each community can design its own tools. The annual Inside Out conference is a window to share knowledge, and it is organized in Community, Mind and Body, as if it were a real organism.

Il laboratorio punta di diamante del MIT di Chicago è il Media Lab, fondato da ormai quasi trent’anni da Nicholas Negroponte con il supporto di Jerome Wiesner. Dopo la fase di ricerca iniziale incentrata sulla rivoluzione digitale (anni ’80-’90), il Lab ha sperimentato un secondo filone di ricerca, ossia l’interattività tra atomi e bit (anni ’90-2000).

Oggi il nuovo paradigma tecnologico è, paradossalmente, la biologia. Attraverso lo studio delle strutture naturali si possono costruire software generativi in grado di interagire con la mente umana. L’annuale convegno Inside Out, vetrina di condivisione dell’innovazione prodotta, è organizzata nei tre macrotemi Comunità, Mente e Corpo, come se si trattasse della ricerca su un essere vivente vero e proprio.

FROM THE DIGITAL REVOLUTION TO THE BIOLOGICAL ONE: collaborative design at the MIT Media Lab DALLA RIVOLUZIONE DIGITALE A QUELLA BIOLOGICA: Progettazione collaborativa al MIT Media Lab At the end of April was held the annual meeting “Inside Out” that brings together the best minds of the Media Lab of MIT School. The meeting has identified the ongoing research at the laboratory, there has benn talks about complex systems of robots and biological brain softwares. To better explain what the lab is, imagine that. You find yourself in a glass building in a large free plan hall; in the middle of the room there are table groups dominated by PCs, cables and electrical devices, some guys are drinking a coffee sitting on comfortable armchairs, a humanoid-looking robot passes close to your foot silently, in the air the noise of a lively discussion and the ticking of many mouses. A groomed looking man enters the room, approaches quickly at a working table, and discusses with a guy about some electronic device.

This is Nicholas Negroponte, the founder of the Media Lab. The research work at the Media Lab from ‘ 85 to date has experienced different stages. Initially the focus was the exploration of the potential of bits in all its forms. We are in the midst of the digital revolution, the school is full of patents related to electronic music, holography, cognitive methods, digitized graphic interfaces. More precisely the vision of Negroponte’s was focused on three areas: computers (interactive world), telecommunications (showbiz), publishing (World of information). The second decade was the most fascinating: the incorporation of atoms and bits. What happens when a electronic chip is woven on a piece of fabric or in building materials? It gives the go-ahead to larger experimentation on “wearable”, i.e. the embeddable electronics, wireless communications, but also to the “common sense”, and then a whole branch of robotics. The competence of software programmers comes out of niche and explodes to be helpful to the general public in everyday objects. The consumer becomes active user, able

A fine aprile si è tenuto l’annuale incontro Indise Out che riunisce i maggiori rappresentanti del laboratorio punta di diamante della MIT School, il Media Lab. Nelle tre giornate di convegni si è individuata la tendenza delle ricerche in corso al laboratorio, si è parlato di sistemi complessi, di robot cerebrali e di software biologici. Per spiegare meglio di cosa si tratta immaginate questo. Vi trovate in un edificio di vetro, in un grande salone a pianta libera; in mezzo alla stanza gruppi di tavoli sovrastati da pc, cavi e congegni elettrici, alcuni ragazzi bevono un caffè assorti in meditazioni seduti su comode poltrone, un robot dall’aspetto umanoide vi passa vicino ai piedi silenziosamente, nell’aria il rumore di una discussione animata e il ticchettio di molti mouse. Entra un uomo dall’aspetto curato e l’aria concentrata, si avvicina veloce a un tavolo da lavoro, discute con un ragazzo intento a maneggiare un oggetto di plastica collegato a una tastiera. Si tratta di Makey Makey, un progetto che permette a qualsiasi supporto di essere programmabile grazie ad un software open source e molto intuitivo, e il signore in questione è Nicholas Negroponte, il fondatore del Media Lab. Il lavoro di ricerca al Media Lab dall’’85 ad oggi ha vissuto diverse fasi. Inizialmente il focus fu l’esplorazione della potenzialità del bit in tutte le sue forme. Siamo nel pieno della digital revolution, alla scuola si succedono brevetti riguardanti musica elettronica, olografia, metodi cognitivi digitalizzati, interfacce grafiche. Più precisamente nella visione di Negroponte l’interesse era concentrato su tre ambiti: computer (mondo interattivo), telecomunicazioni (mondo dello spettacolo), editoria (mondo dell’informazione). Nella seconda decade avvenne la svolta più affascinante: l’incorporazione di atomi e bit.

Che cosa succede inserendo un chip elettronico in un pezzo di tessuto o in un materiale edile? Si dà il via alle più grandi sperimentazioni sui “wearable”, cioè i dispositivi elettronici incorporabili, alle comunicazioni wireless, ma anche alle macchine dal “senso comune”, e quindi a tutto il ramo della robotica. to customize and reprogram its instruments.

Currently the new frontier is the application of biology to technology. Some interesting examples of ongoing studies are intelligent human prosthetics (Fc), the social robot able to use the language in a manner similar to humans (Cognitive machines), intuitive computers to help the relationship with humans (Digital intuition), biological manufacturing processes (Mediated matter), nano structures for energy production (Molecular machines), neuro smart technologies (Synthetic neurobiology). Being a Media Lab is of course always present research on communication, in particular trying to bring as much as possible the interface of biological and social behaviour of men through nano-pervasive devices. The biggest example is the deepening on the car of the future, which will allow us to live the city and mobility as smart and sustainable. Thanks to the presence of Seymour Papert, a key focus of the Lab is the pedagogy, which is presented as an active learning process aided by the use of intelligent technologies; schoolchildren learn by doing, through software and design objects.

The organizational structure of the lab looks like a cloud of research programs interrelated with each other. The teaching is organized into twenty-six teams, including Changing Places, Responsive Environments and Synthetic Neurobiology, and three, interdisciplinary teams, including Things that think. The names are very attractive and give a clear idea of the research fields. There are also six specific research centers, including the Center for Future Storytelling and Center for Mobile Learning. What distinguishes the Media Lab from other departments at MIT is the financing system.

Since the early months of opening, Negroponte became concerned of agreements with sponsoring companies, initially with the media industry, such as Time Inc. and Warner Communications, then increasingly with technology giants like IBM and

Attualmente la nuova frontiera è l’applicazione della biologia alla tecnologia. Alcuni esempi interessanti di studi in corso sono le protesi umane intelligenti (Biomechatronics), i robot sociali capaci di usare il linguaggio in modo simile agli umani (Cognitive machines), i computer intuitivi per aiutare il rapporto con gli umani (Digital intuition), i processi di fabbricazione biologica (Mediated matter), le nano strutture per la produzione di energia (Molecular machines), le neuro tecnologie intelligenti (Synthetic neurobiology).

Trattandosi di un laboratorio di Media naturalmente è sempre presente la ricerca sulla comunicazione, in particolare si tenta di avvicinare il più possibile l’interfaccia delle macchine al comportamento socio-biologico degli uomini attraverso nano-dispositivi pervasivi. Il maggiore esempio è l’approfondimento sull’auto del futuro, che ci permetterà di vivere la città e la mobilità in modo smart e sostenibile. Grazie alla presenza di Seymour Papert, un focus fondamentale del Lab è la pedagogia, che viene presentata come un processo di apprendimento attivo aiutato dall’uso di tecnologie intelligenti; gli scolari imparano facendo, attraverso l’auto progettazione di software e oggetti.

La struttura organizzativa del Laboratorio si presenta come una nuvola di indirizzi di ricerca interrelati fra loro. La didattica è organizzata in ventisei gruppi, fra cui Biomechatronics, Changing Places, Responsive Environments e Synthetic Neurobiology, e tre consorzi, cioè gruppi interdisciplinari, fra cui il Things that think. I nomi sono molto accattivanti e danno un’idea chiara dei campi di ricerca avviati. Ci sono anche sei centri per ricerche specifiche, fra cui il Center for Future Storytelling e il Center for Mobile Learning. Ciò che contraddistingue il Media Lab dagli altri dipartimenti del MIT è il sistema di finanziamento. Fin dai primi mesi di apertura, Negroponte si preoccupò di stringere accordi con aziende sponsorizzatrici, inizialmente con l’industria mediatica,

AT&T, to such an extent that all activities were entirely funded by industry – even the students are salaried and should not bear of tuition-ensuring that every invention can actually be experienced at high levels and connected directly to the world of large-scale production. Nonetheless, the Lab has as basic rule the academic freedom: researches are motivated only by self-interest and not by commercial companies’ needs. The school is a “doing” tank “, rather than a think tank, in which continually prototypes are churned out for possible future developments, without any pretense to seek answers for the future. Designers, engineers, artists and scientists work together in a sort of contemporary Bauhaus, where the diversity of contributions rises exponentially the labour productivity. “We don’t study, we are inventors, we try things,” said Negroponte in his interviews.

Freedom is also found in methods of learning.

They are increasingly numerous online courses to practice independently, while the “flipped classroom”, is an interactive discussion between students and teachers, to refine ideas and seek contributions. The habit to transparency allows everyone to know, understand and reinvent.

Fundamental is the attention to the mistake, as positively as possible to improve the project. The communication takes place mainly with the outside through the continuing publication of reports and articles in such a way as to enable a global conversation. The lab is enriched by diversity made by other researchers and scholars around the world, constantly seeking feedback from companies to increase their funding and research opportunities.

The school produces about twenty patents every year; in 2012 counted 140 graduate students and approximately 80 funders. With an operating budget of 35 million dollars a year roughly 350 projects are followed simultaneously.

come la Time inc. e la Warner Communications, poi sempre più con colossi tecnologici come IBM e AT&T, a tal punto che tutte le attività sono state interamente finanziate dall’industria –perfino gli studenti sono salariati e non devono sobbarcarsi di tasse universitarie- facendo sì che ogni invenzione possa essere effettivamente sperimentata ad alti livelli e collegarsi direttamente al mondo della produzione a grande scala. Ciò nonostante il Lab ha come regola base la libertà accademica: le ricerche sono motivate solamente dall’interesse personale e non da indirizzi commerciali forniti delle aziende. La scuola è un “doing tank”, piuttosto che un think tank, d’eccellenza, in cui continuamente si sfornano prototipi per possibili sviluppi futuri, senza nessuna pretesa di ricercare risposte per il futuro, ma con la sola preoccupazione di realizzare le intuizioni creative di studenti e professori.

Progettisti, ingegneri, artisti e scienziati lavorano insieme in una sorta di Bauhaus contemporaneo, in cui la diversità degli apporti aumenta esponenzialmente la produttività del lavoro. “Noi non studiamo, siamo inventori, proviamo cose”, sostiene Negroponte nelle sue interviste.

La libertà si ritrova anche nei metodi di apprendimento.

Sono, infatti, sempre più numerosi i corsi online per esercitarsi autonomamente, mentre dal vivo si fa “flipped classroom”, cioè una discussione interattiva tra studenti e insegnanti, in cui si affinano le idee e si cercano contributi in modo partecipato. L’abitudine alla trasparenza permette a ognuno di conoscere, capire e reinventare; fondamentale è l’attenzione all’errore, visto in modo positivo come possibilità di migliorare il progetto.

La comunicazione avviene soprattutto con l’esterno attraverso la continua pubblicazione di report e articoli in modo da attivare una conversazione globale. Il lab si arricchisce della diversità apportata da altri ricercatori e studiosi sparsi in tutto il mondo, cerca costantemente un feedback dalle aziende per incrementare i propri finanziamenti e le possibilità di ricerca. La scuola produce circa una ventina di brevetti ogni anno, nel 2012 ha contato 140 laureati e circa 80 finanziatori. Con un budget operativo di 35 milioni di dollari l’anno sono seguiti circa

from the beginning by the vocation to serve mankind and is increasingly moving towards the social utility.

On the homepage of the website it is stated that the lab “develops technologies that allow people of all ages and social background and in all societies to design and invent new possibilities for themselves and their communities”. An important step of the job is now to create a technology understandable and reinterpretabile by the individual. For example you can see the project One Laptop per Child (OLPC), created by Negroponte. This is a laptop and high mechanical strength with software specifically designed for children from less developed countries and whose motto is “learning to learn”. The baby is active in understanding how to use the tool to enhance and personalize his online knowledge.

After 27 years of operation the inventing aim hasn’t sold out: during the “Inside Out” meeting the overview of the Lab’s has continued to catch the attention of lots of people, judging by the number of Tweets about the event. The meeting was divided in three parts: community, mind and body. Community picks up threads on new methods of learning, on the complexity of the natural and social systems, and the ability to understand the laws. Mind is the part that tells the studies on the human brain, then the possibility to know the mechanisms through super tools specialized and use this knowledge to create machines that can interact with the human mind. Body deals with biological research aiming to recreate synthetically cellular systems to produce such as custom-made implants or generative software. The new technological paradigm is paradoxically nature. If technology is able to mimic the natural laws, it will no longer need instruction manuals but will be confused in the biotic world.

Questo fitto ecosistema del sapere, mosso fin dall’inizio dalla vocazione di servire l’umanità, si sta sempre più orientando verso l’utilità sociale. Nella homepage del sito dedicato si legge che il laboratorio “sviluppa tecnologie che permettono a persone di tutte le età ed estrazione sociale e in tutte le società di progettare e inventare nuove possibilità per sé stessi e le proprie comunità”.

Un importante step del lavoro è quindi oggi quello di creare una tecnologia comprensibile e reinterpretabile dai singoli. Serva da esempio il progetto One Laptop per Child (OLPC), ideato da Negroponte. Si tratta di un pc portatile e ad alta resistenza meccanica con un software studiato ad hoc per essere utilizzato dai bambini dei paesi meno sviluppati e il cui motto è “learning to learn”.

Il bambino è attivo nel capire come utilizzare lo strumento per accrescere e personalizzare la propria conoscenza.

Dopo 27 anni di attività la carica innovativa non si è ancora esaurita: nelle tre giornate dell’Inside Out citato in apertura, la panoramica sui progetti del Lab divisi in Community, Mind e Body ha continuato ad interessare specialisti e non, a giudicare dai numerosi tweet sull’evento. Community raccoglie le discussioni sui nuovi metodi di apprendimento, sulla complessità dei sistemi sociali e naturali, e sulla possibilità di capirne le leggi. Mind è la parte che racconta gli studi sul cervello umano, quindi la possibilità di conoscerne i meccanismi attraverso strumenti super specializzati e utilizzare questa conoscenza per creare macchine in grado di interagire con la mente umana. Body si occupa delle ricerche biologiche tese a ricreare sinteticamente i sistemi cellulari per produrre ad esempio protesi su misura o software generativi. Il nuovo paradigma tecnologico è paradossalmente la natura: se la tecnologia riuscirà a imitare le leggi naturali, non avrà più bisogno di manuali di istruzioni ma sarà confusa nel mondo biotico. “Life is a DNA software system”.
