Siamo consapevoli da oltre un secolo che l’ambiente di apprendimento influenza lo sviluppo cognitivo dei bambini.

E’ questo il percorso segnato dalle teorie e pratiche sperimentali iniziato all’inizio del secolo scorso da Maria Montessori. è a Loris Malaguzzi, fondatore della scuola di Reggio Emilia, cui si deve lo slogan “l’ambiente è il terzo maestro”, che Bruce Mau dedica il libro “The Third Teacher. 79 ways you can use design to transform teaching and learning”, un’esperienza di riflessione e progettazione collaborativa che si articola in un alfabeto di 79 linee guida per rinnovare il modo di insegnare, apprendere, progettare.

Since more than a century we are aware that the learning environment influences the cognitive development of children.

This is the path marked by theories and experimental practices started at the beginning of the last century by Maria Montessori.

It is to Loris Malaguzzi, founder of Reggio Emilia school, to whom we owe the slogan “the environment is the third teacher” that Bruce Mau dedicates the book “The Third Teacher. 79 ways you can use design to transform teaching and learning”, an experience of reflection and collaborative design that is expressed by an alphabet of 79 guidelines to renovate the way to teach, learn and design.

The third teacher in the 21st century

Siamo consapevoli da oltre un secolo che l’ambiente di apprendimento influenza lo sviluppo cognitivo dei bambini.

E’ questo il percorso segnato dalle teorie e pratiche sperimentali: - iniziato all’inizio del secolo scorso da Maria Montessori, la quale avvia lo studio dello sviluppo dei sistemi cognitivi; - consolidato negli anni ’40 dallo psicologo e maestro Loris Malaguzzi, fondatore della scuola di Reggio Emilia, cui si deve lo slogan “l’ambiente è il terzo maestro”; - proseguito nel secondo dopoguerra con Jean Piaget, Albert Bandura e la scuola di Stanford, per finire con Seymour Papert, il quale inizia l’esplorazione del rapporto fra apprendimento e cibernetica.

Oggi, grazie a questi fondamentali apporti siamo consapevoli che la scuola é uno spazio: “adattativo”, in grado di assecondare l’evoluzione del bambino creativo, per permettere agli alunni di lavorare in modo non lineare, collaborativo, per favorire relazioni olistiche fra docenti e allievi. In questo contesto il maestro diventa una guida, non più un leader che gestisce l’intero processo dell’ insegnamento.

Loris Malaguzzi esplicita la forza attiva dei bambini nel processo dell’apprendimento, soprattutto se dotati degli strumenti necessari ed inseriti in un contesto stimolante. A lui si deve l’introduzione dell’atelier nella scuola. A Jean Piaget, l’introduzione del concetto di conoscenza come esperienza che si acquisisce attraverso l’interazione con il mondo reale, le persone, gli oggetti. Seymour Papert, un pedagogista e informatico statunitense, grazie alla prossimità con i cibernetici, sviluppa ulteriormente il concetto introdotto da Jean Piaget e lo declina al mondo della cibernetica, sviluppando il concetto del “Learning by doing”, ossia dell’“imparare facendo”, grazie alle potenzialità dei moderni computer che permettono di simulare la realtà.

Ad Albert Bandura e la scuola di Stanford il merito di aver sviluppato concetti quali l’apprendimento sociale e la teoria sociale cognitiva, ampliando le conoscenze

Since more than a century we are aware that the learning environment influences the cognitive development of children.

This is the path marked by theories and experimental practices: - started at the beginning of the last century by Maria Montessori, which starts the study of cognitive systems’ development; - strenghtened in the 40’s by the psycologist and teacher Loris Malaguzzi, founder of Reggio Emilia school, to whom we owe the slogan “the environment is the third teacher”; - followed by the second postwar with Jean Piaget, Albert Bandura and the Stanford School, to end with Seymour Papert, which starts the exploration of the relationship between learning and cybernetics.

Thanks to these essential contributions, we are today aware that school is a modifying and fitting space, able to support the child’s evolution, creative, which allows children to work in a collaborative way, to foster holistic relations between teachers and students. In this context the teacher becomes a guide, no more a leader which manipulates the entire process of teaching.

Loris Malaguzzi affirms the active power of children in the process of learning, especially if equipped with the necessary tools and integrated in a stimulating environment. To him we owe the introduction of the atelier in the school. To Jean Piaget the introduction of the knowledge concept as an experience which is gained through the interaction with the real world, the people, the objects. Seymour Papert, an American pedagogist and computer scientist, further develops, thanks to the proximity with the cybernetics, the concept introduced by Jean Piaget and he enriches it with the cybernetics world, developing the concept of “Learning by doing”, thanks to the potentialities of modern computers which enable to simulate the reality.

sui processi di apprendimento.

Su queste solide basi poggia “The Third Teacher.

79 ways you can use design to transform teaching and learning”, un libro frutto della progettazione collaborativa gestita da Bruce Mau Design, VS Furniture e OWP/P Architects. Questa pubblicazione é di fondamentale importanza perché illustra gli elementi dello spazio-scuola del XXI secolo in relazione ai bisogni della società odierna e futura e li codifica in 79 linee guida. I 6 punti sottolineati di seguito descrivono non solo lo spazio fisico, ma tutti gli elementi che concorrono a rendere la scuola un luogo di civiltà e di sviluppo della persona (quali il cibo, il rapporto con la comunità, ecc).

Essi definiscono lo spazio di apprendimento del XXI secolo: salubre, inclusivo, adattabile, attrezzato, fortemente connesso (fisicamente e virtualmente) e sostenibile.

Salubre. Un ambiente sicuro e salubre é la prerogativa base per assicurare lo sviluppo e l’equilibrio psicofisico del bambino (vedi la scuola Fridtjof Nansen di Hannover, ripensata da VS Furniture).

Inclusivo. Gli spazi devono incentivare le relazioni, essere visibili e visitabili da tutti, devono mostrare quello che sta avvenendo. L’ambiente dev’essere altamente comunicativo, anziché avere pareti spoglie, i lavori vanno appesi ai muri in modo che siano condivisibili. Lo spazio è inclusivo perché il cuore della progettazione è il bambino con i suoi ritmi e le sue necessità, il quale trova costantemente stimoli in oggetti evocativi e spazi di lavoro interdisciplinari.

Ancora, la scuola é inclusiva perché accoglie le diversità, siano esse razziali, culturali, o di abilità.

Adattabile. Gli spazi di apprendimento devono essere calibrati ergonomicamente a seconda degli utenti che servono, inoltre devono essere riconfigurabili facilmente a seconda delle attività svolte, la disposizione dell’aula non deve essere rigida e il banco deve muoversi facilmente all’interno della classe, E’ importante che l’arredo sia mobile e moderno, per tramettere un’idea di apertura con le tendenze in atto nel mondo esterno.

On these solid fundamentals lays “The Third Teacher.

79 ways you can use design to transform teaching and learning”, a book resulting from the collaborative design managed by Bruce Mau Design, VS Furniture and OWP/P Architects . This publication is essential because it illustrates the elements of the spaceschool in the 21st century in relation with the needs of today’s and future’s society and it classifies them in 79 guidelines. The 6 points underlined as follow describe not only the physical space, but all the elements that contribute to make the school a place of civilization and a place of development for the human being (like food, the relationship with the community, ecc).

These six points define the learning space of 21st century: healthy, inclusive, adaptable, equipped, highly connected (physically and virtually) and sustainable.

Healthy. A safe and healthy environment is the basic prerogative to ensure the development and the psycophysical balance of the child (see Fridtjof Nansen School in Hannover, re-organised by VS Furniture).

Inclusive. The spaces have to favour relations, be visible and experienced by everyone, show what’s going on inside. The environment has to be highly communicative, instead of bare walls, the works has to be fixed to the walls in order to be seen by everyone.

The space is inclusive because the heart of the design process is the child with his/her pace and necessities, which constantly finds incitement in evocative objects and interdisciplinary spaces of work. Still, the school is inclusive because it houses the diversities, be they ratial, cultural or about abilities.

Adaptable. The learning spaces have to fit ergonomically to respond to the users they are serving, furthermore they have to be easily changed depending on the activities going-on, the set of the classroom doesn’t have to be rigid and the desk has to move easily inside the classroom. It’s important that the furniture is mobile and modern, to communicate a sense of openness with the trends going on in the outside world.

Attrezzato. La società del XXI secolo è altamente complessa e sta cambiando a velocità esponenziale, è importante quindi che la scuola stia al passo con questa evoluzione e si attrezzi per essere in sintonia con il cambiamento attraverso dispositivi di interazione sempre aggiornati. L’attrezzatura che maggiormente lega la scuola al mondo esterno é la tecnologia.

Il gioco é una parte fondamentale dell’apprendimento, quindi il gioco deve essere ovunque, in ogni angolo della scuola (vedi la scuola Hellerup di Copenhagen, segnalata come emblema della scuola del XXI secolo), mentre i luoghi di passaggio accolgono nicchie e arredi che consentono la privacy. Il contatto diretto con la natura dev’essere incentivato, perché apre le menti dei bambini e libera la loro creatività.

Fortemente connesso. Con la città prima di tutto, per essere in dialogo costante con la comunità (vedi l’iniziativa Boston Schoolyard Initiative).

La grande novità che investe lo spazio scolastico attuale, rispetto a quello storico, é la sua dilatazione fisica attraverso lo spazio virtuale, grazie alla disponibilità della rete e l’uso dei dispositivi cibernetici.

La classe diventa così un mix di atomi e bit, dove la dimensione virtuale sta accrescendo sempre più la sua importanza (vedi la Scuola di Scienze e Tecnologia di Denver).

Sostenibile. La scuola deve essere in linea con i principi della sostenibilità, in primo luogo perché è un edificio pubblico, visibile da tutta la comunità e perciò un esempio, in secondo luogo perché responsabilizza i bambini rispetto al tema e li rende partecipi fin da subito alle pratiche sostenibili. (vedi la scuola Islandwood a Brainbridge Island, USA).

In conclusione é utile sottolineare quanto un ambiente di apprendimento, seppur disponendo di tutte le caratteristiche descritte sopra, non porti all’evoluzione del bambino se non c’è un adeguato personale docente, e un sistematico supporto di facilitatori a favore delle fasce più svantaggiate.

A questo proposito va rilevata l’assoluta qualità della sperimentazione italiana, la quale sulle basi solide dell’esperienza di Reggio Emilia ha sviluppato una rete

Equipped. The society of 21st century is highly complex and it’s changing at high speed, it’s important for the school to be aligned with this evolution and to be highly equipped in order to be in sintony with the change through interaction’s tools always updated.

The equipment which mainly links the school with the outside world is technology.

Playing is a fundamental part of learning, so it has to be everywhere, in every corner of the school (see the Hellerup school of Copenhagen, recommended as the symbol of the school of 21st century), instead the linking spaces host recesses and furniture which allow privacy. The direct contact with the nature has to be fostered because it opens children’s minds and it frees their creativity.

Highly connected. Firstly with the city, to be in constant dialogue with the community (see Boston Schoolyard Initiative).

The big news regarding the current scholastic space, compared with the historic one, is its physical expansion through the virtual space, thanks to the availability of the internet and the use of cybernetic tools. The classroom becomes in this way a mix of atoms and bits, where the virtual dimension is growing more and more its importance (see Science and Technology School of Denver).

Sustainable. The school has to be aligned with the principles of sustainability, first of all because it’s a public building, visible by the whole community, so it’s an example, secondly because it makes the children responsible to the theme and it makes them feel involved since the beginning to sustainable practices (see Islandwood school, in Brainbridge Island, USA).

Finally it’s important to underline how much a learning environment, although it has all the characteristics described above, doesn’t lead to the child’s evolution if there isn’t a suitable teaching staff, and a systematic support of facilities for disadvantaged children.

In this regard it has to be noticed the absolute quality of the Italian experimentation, which ,on the solid basis of Reggio Emilia experience, developed a network of modern voluntary work which, limited to Milan area

di moderno volontariato, che, limitatamente all’area milanese esprime eccellenze quali le Cooperative e Associazioni La strada, L’impronta, Lo scrigno, Zero 5, Giorgetti, Piccolo Principe.

A conferma che la qualità dell’involucro ha come motore la qualità delle risorse e delle relazioni umane.
