So this is my final foreword for Marham Matters. I have been the editor for the past 6 years, and the time has come for me to move on and pass the torch on to another.

I’ve been at RAF Marham as a Civil Servant since the summer of 2003. I’ve seen thousands of people come and go, and sadly lost some forever, seen three different aircraft operate from the Station, two of which now are in museums!

From the amazing experiences to the really difficult days, no two days in the past two decades have been the same. But the one thing that I have valued throughout are the friendships I’ve made and the teams I have worked with. They are the thing I will miss the most as I leave.

In this role I’ve had the opportunity to see more of what the people on this Station are capable of. Many of you are doing extraordinary things, but don’t like to tell people what you are doing. Let them know, let the media team know, and we can encourage more within the Station community to support you and do more amazing things for the Station and the community. Please do support the new editor by contacting them at mrm-mcogroup@mod.gov.uk They would love to hear about what you have been up to!

So thanks for the memories RAF Marham. All the best to you all for the future!

Farewell.

Deadline for Next Issue: 1st June

Station Commander’s Foreword

Times are quite hard for us all at the moment – with huge winter gas bills to go alongside the usual strains of our busy lives – but I’m always perked up by everyone’s efforts to just keep calm and carry on. People are undoubtedly feeling the pressure and I’m grateful for all those who help others where they can – thanks go to the formal support resources like SSAFA, the community support team, welfare staff and the chaplaincy, but also to those of you who help in all your small ways to look after your neighbours, volunteer your own time and keep the community fridge stocked!

All of this means that we can put our best foot forward in maintaining our operational outputs: the Lightning Force continues to grow and we need to fly like crazy to build the squadrons. As usual, the whole team at Marham

continues to be professional and committed; we are urgently trying to improve the community areas, not least to support those who are left behind when loved ones are deployed. Hopefully you’ll some of these improvements as the year goes on.

There’s a lot to look forward to this year – not just the big events that are already being advertised, but more activities and clubs running daily. I’d encourage everyone to simply get stuck in; it has taken a while for us to all collectively come out of our shells since COVID was prevalent, but 2023 is our year to really get out reconnect. And the good news is that as it warms up at least our utility bills will come down a bit… let’s just hope we don’t have to spend all that saved money on buying air conditioning units for another blazing summer!

RAF Aircrew Flying Log

At the RAF Marham Aviation Heritage Centre (AHC) we frequently have people bring in Log Books that they would like help in decoding, and also to find out more information to provide context to the Log Book entries. We spend much of our time at the AHC helping relatives in their search for information.

The Log Book or other enquiries are not just about Marham squadrons or people, and we are always delighted to provide whatever help we can. We are also keen to add copies (or originals) of Log Books to the archive, as these help increase the research base for us and others. We are also lucky in that a number of people have donated Log Books to the collection, and we are happy to look after and make available for research any RAF Log Books and associated collections.

It was from this research help that we provide that we decided to produce an introductory guide to understanding Log Books, and we hope it will motivate people who have Log Books from relatives to try to find out more about the content of the Log Book, to understand its content and its context.

Dambusters

In early November The Dambusters made the long transit to northern Norway, where two Jets performed a live weapon drop. Poignantly the location of this live drop happened to be only 50 miles away from where some of the original Dambusters of 617 Squadron bombed and sunk the formidable Tirpitz almost 78 years prior, a feat still as astonishing today as it was then as Hitler himself considered the German Battleship “unsinkable!” *see editor’s note

However, November was all about Operation ACHILLEAN and the Squadron embarking on HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH. The main focus of the Operation was to regain and initially qualify all Squadron pilots to launch from and land on the carrier in the many challenging weather conditions that the North Sea could provide. In addition to achieving Carrier Qualifications for all pilots, whilst onboard

617 Squadron also carried out Joint Expeditionary Force Air Operations activity. During this activity Norwegian F-35As carried out simulated air attacks against the Carrier Strike Group and the 617 Squadron jets valiantly defended, providing an excellent opportunity to further strengthen ties with our Norwegian partners. These experiences will stand the Squadron in good stead prior to future deployments, should that be on HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH or HMS PRINCE OF WALES.

617 Squadron returned to the familiar setting of RAF Marham where work began at pace by both the engineers, who were busy carrying out post embarked servicing of the jets and the pilots, whose focus was solely on regaining currencies in the simulators by conducting emergency procedure missions and tactical skills. Once the jets were serviced and the pilots currencies updated, The Dambusters were tasked to carry out one last Exercise before 2022 drew to an end. We provided Offensive Counter Air sweeps for 4th generation striker aircraft comprising of two UK Typhoons and two French Rafale, supported by French air to air refuelers.

Following a welcome period of rest and recuperation over the festive break, The Dambusters were back in at the deep end hosting several Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACs) as part of Ex EARLY RESOLVE. These JTACs are the ground personnel who call in airstrikes during Close Air Support (CAS) missions. This CAS Exercise in the local area used lots of different fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, with 617 Squadron flying a number of day and night missions. Alongside this The Dambusters were tested through the means of tactical flying checks when the Lightning Force standardisation visit (LSV) occurred; mainly performing CAS as part Ex EARLY RESOLVE, but also in Basic Fighter Manoeuvres and

Tactical Intercepts sorties. In the station-based Full Mission Simulators pilots were further tested by performing Annual Handling Checks. As expected there were no issues, although the pilots were very grateful when the LSV was over!

Looking forward, 617 Squadron have another busy year ahead with further deployments planned. We’ll tell you more about those in future articles.

Early

2023 has seen 207 Squadron's focus turn to achieving Carrier Qualifications.

For two weeks in February, 207 Squadron embarked in HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH for the first time to conduct Carrier Qualifications (CQ) and Landing Signals Officer (LSO) training for the Lightning Force (LF). These qualifications are essential to maintain resilience within the Force and to ensure the Operational Conversion Unit (OCU) is able to continue to train students in this vital skill. The Exercise marked the first time many on the Squadron had embarked in a Royal Navy ship which made it an ideal opportunity for training and development across all teams.

Prior to embarkation, the whole Squadron had a part to play in planning and preparing.

10 MARHAM MATTERS ‘Deliver Battle Winning Air Power for Current and Future Operations’ MARHAM MATTERS NEWS

The Engineering team worked tirelessly to ensure enough jets were fully maintained whilst also conducting flight deck specific pre-embarkation training. Mission Support Flight liaised closely with the mission planning team onboard HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH to transfer the essential files, pilot documentation and communication frequencies required for the aircraft to successfully embark. They also sent members in an Advance Party to test the mission planning equipment onboard was functioning as required. Finally, the pilots travelled to BAE Systems in Warton to practise Carrier take-offs and landings in a specifically designed simulator. This pre-requisite training allowed the Squadron LSOs, all experienced at landing on aircraft carriers, to provide constructive feedback to trainee and refresher pilots that would later contribute to the safe execution of CQs onboard.

Once at sea, the initial challenge for many personnel was simply finding their way around the maze that is HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH. Thankfully, the ship’s company were extremely understanding and were always happy to help lost Squadron members get where they needed to be (often nowhere near where they had been found!).

Two days into the embarkation, five jets left Marham and joined the ship. During their short time at sea, six student pilots achieved both their day and night CQs alongside qualified pilots who also refreshed their CQs. Each of the pilots was required to fly five sorties (three day and two night) in order to achieve the qualification. These sorties involved them launching from and recovering to the ship 16 times in varying weather and visibility conditions, including pitch black conditions.

Overall, 49 sorties and 121 deck landings were completed with all areas of the Squadron working cohesively in a new and unfamiliar environment to achieve this. The high tempo of sorties coupled with strong winds on deck and continuous maintenance requirements did not phase the team as they continued to produce safe and effective flight deck operations day after day.

Other notable achievements whilst onboard included one

pilot attaining their Landing Signals Officer Qualification and another now halfway towards acquiring theirs. In the Engineering Flight, LAET Teichman passed his Certificate of Competency to Supervise Aircraft Maintenance (CCSAM) Board, which now makes him a fully qualified Supervisor.

Whilst Ex Panther Fury marked the first time the Squadron had embarked in HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH, her partnership with the Lightning Force is set to

endure for many years to come. All teams came away with great experience and valuable lessons that have been reflected on and fed forward for the benefit of future LF embarked operations.

As the Squadron now turns its attention back to day-today training and the start of LF’s first Qualified Weapons Instructor Course, the squadron has enjoyed the experience and is proud to have achieved so much in such a relatively short embarkation.

lodged at RAF Cranwell following disbandment No 39 Squadron standard

The 39 Squadron Standard has been lodged in the Rotunda at College Hall Officers’ Mess, RAF Cranwell in a short ceremony following Squadron’s disbandment in July 2022. As many of you may remember, 39 Squadron has a history at RAF Marham, being based here from 1993 – 2006 with the Canberra. It is also connected with RAF Marham

through our current Station Commander, Gp Capt Fred Wigglesworth, who was the final Officer Commanding of 39 Squadron until it’s disbandment last year. The lodgement ceremony was attended by members of 39 Squadron who handed over the Standard to RAF College Cranwell, where it will be housed in the Rotunda until such a time that the

squadron is resurrected. The standards are consecrated items, and therefore the only persons who may handle them with bare hands are the monarch or the clergy. Number 39 Squadron, was originally formed as part of the Royal Flying Corps during April 1916 as the first of the Home Defence squadrons. It came to prominence following

William Leefe Robinson’s successful destruction of a German Airship; an exploit for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross and the squadron gained its nick name ‘The Zeppelin Killers’. The interwar period saw 39 Squadron deployed to Risalpur on what is now the North West Frontier between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Here they were

tasked with policing the tribal areas by airborne observation and intervention if needed.  During World War Two, 39 Squadron spent the majority of its time on the shores of the Mediterranean flying the Blenheim, Beaufort and Beaufighter. Initially as a strategic reconnaissance squadron, then as an antishipping squadron based out of Egypt and finally, based out of Italy conducting raids against infra-structure and supply lines in Yugoslavia.

1958 marked the start of 50 years of 39 Squadron flying the Canberra, tasked primarily with tactical and strategic reconnaissance. Over the years both the airframe and the equipment on board the Canberra saw continuous upgrade with the PR9 ultimately being deployed to Afghanistan on Operation Herrick before the unit’s disbandment in 2006.

In January 2007, 39 Squadron became the RAF’s first Remotely Piloted Air

System squadron, with its headquarters at RAF Waddington but based at Creech Air Force Base in Nevada, flying the General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper. When 39 Squadron disbanded in July 2022, it had flown MQ-9 for more than 90,000 operational hours.

Group Captain Wigglesworth said; “After 15 years of continuous operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, it is with a comforting sense of accomplishment and pride in having done our duty that Number 39 Squadron lodges its Standard back on British soil, at the home of the RAF. Another historic chapter is closed on the Winged Bomb, but the Zeppelin Killers remain ready to rise again and answer the call of duty! Die Noctuque –By Day and Night.“

To find out more about the history of 39 Squadron at RAF Marham, visit the RAF Marham Aviation Heritage Centre, open Tuesdays and Wednesdays 0900 – 1600 and the last Saturday of each month.

Commonwealth Day at RAF Marham

At 1100 hours on Monday 13th March RAF Marham raised The Commonwealth of Nations Flag of Peace to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the signing of the Commonwealth Charter by Her Late Majesty The Queen, a charter based on friendship, loyalty and the desire for freedom and peace.

The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 56 independent and equal sovereign states. It is home to 2.4 billion citizens, and includes some of the world’s largest, smallest, richest and poorest countries spanning five regions.

The Commonwealth Day Proclamation was read by Able Rating Akhmed, whose day job is an engineer on the F-35B Lightning. RAF Marham Station Commander, Group Captain Wigglesworth gave Commonwealth Day Greetings and talked about his family links to a number of the Commonwealth Countries before the flag was raised. Once the flag was raised City of Norwich Pipe Band Piper, Geoff Taylor, who had previously served at RAF Marham, played the Highland Cathedral on his bagpipes, a favourite tune of The Late Queen Mother.

Petty Officer Bolatiki, from Logistics Support Squadron, finished off the ceremony with a reading of The Affirmation to the Commonwealth. After the event guests made their way to the Chaplaincy Centre where an Asian fusion of foods was being served by chef AS1 Mughal. AS1 Mughal said “I previously served in the Army where a number of cultures were brought together so now I am in the Royal Air Force I wanted to showcase my culture at RAF Marham through my cooking. Today was the perfect opportunity to do this. I am still under training so it was great to use my skills today and see everyone coming together and enjoying my food.”

Petty Officer Joseph, originally from Trinidad and Tobago, said

”RAF Marham has a number of service personnel at the base representing different countries of the Commonwealth and their different cultures. It was great today to show our support to all those backgrounds and cultures by raising the Commonwealth Flag.”

22 February

RAF Marham v RAF Coningsby

Another long away day (never a close one for Marham) to Coningsby (game played at Woodhall Spa), a location where we have struggled to get a result in recent seasons. Stretched thin for numbers, several 2nd team players and one new player stepped up and came on the journey, the team compromising of only 11 players plus manager as the 1 sub.

A quick start saw 2 big chances go begging for Marham, when deadlock was broken at 13 minutes with an exquisite free kick by AS1 Wilson (LSS), nestling in the top corner from 20/25 yards. Marham dominated the 1st half with 1 shot saved by Cpl Ralph in the Marham net. AS1 Brotherton had a huge 1v1 chance to make it 2-0 shortly before halftime, but the shot went agonisingly past the post. Cpl Worthington had another chance which was saved by the GK, with AS1 Wilson hitting the post from another free kick

2nd half, Coningsby made some changes and had some early success with a few half chances. The lack of subs playing its part, and the new player AS Trohear came off at the 55 min mark. 65min went past with Marham seeing scraps and 1 or 2 half chances. Coningsby hit the woodwork twice, a few shots off target, and 2 big 1v1 saves from Cpl Ralph kept us in it. Then, from a corner, the ball bobbled around the area, and fell nicely to Coningsby who blasted in from close range (a deserved goal on their 2nd half). Another chance for Coningsby which saw the ball bounce off the post and fortunately back

in to the GK hands. Marham battled through and tried to gain controlled possession an try and hit on the counter. 7 minutes to the end, with the ball worked up top, a free kick in a dangerous position as awarded. Up stepped AS1 Wilson (again!) who hit the target and managed to find a way past their keeper to make it 2-1. Marham defended brilliantly, to hold on for a big win.

Player of the Match – AS1 Clapcott. A brick wall in defence, winning his duels and headers, organising the defensive line and communicating well with his team, a huge performance from the Centre back! A big mention to AS1 Wilson for his 2 match winning goals.

8 March

Armed Forces League

Another league game against RAF Coningsby. Both teams struggling for numbers which meant Marham’s Manager, Sgt Ramsden having to Don the boots and the OiC, Flt Lt Mabbott braving the ankle strap and playing the 90. 2 new debutants for the season in Cpl Morgan in goal, and Sgt Cook at fullback.

A strong start by RAF Marham saw 1 or 2 half chances go by, then around the 20 mark, Cpl Nicholas played an exquisite pass into AR Loraine who turned and finished past the keeper. Marham playing well in the opening 30, a loss of concentration saw a loose

pass across the back picked up by their striker, Cpl Kendrick recovered well to delay the shot, and Cpl Morgan pulling off a big save to deny the visitors a way back into the game. Some half chances including a header of the bar went by as the half drew to a close.

2nd half started like the 1st with Marham enjoying some good possession. The cavalry arrived as 2 subs rocked up midway through the 2nd half, and on the 60 min mark, Ramsden and AR Van Der Linder made way for AS1 Wilson and AS1 Durrant. Only a few minutes later and free kick to Marham was awarded on the edge of the box. Both teams knowing full well what comes next, up steps Wilson to curl it straight into the top corner, 2 0. Flood gates opened as Coningsby chased a way back into it, a perfectly flighted corner from Wilson was met by the head of a flying (like the pun) Mabbott who rifled a header past the keeper, 3 0. 18 to go and Marham after more, another in swinging corner from Wilson  was bundled in by a Coningsby player much to the distraught of AS1 Hall who attempted to claim a rare goal, 4 0. Time for more as the Captain, Cpl Kendrick met a delightful cross and looped a header in over the keeper to make it 5 0. A late sub, Van Der Linde back on for last 12 replacing AS1 Carter.

Player of the Match  - Cpl Kendrick – led by example and controlled the midfield from start to finish, starting most of Marham attacking play off whilst breaking a lot of Coningsby efforts to play through the middle, fully deserved.
