Go ahead – Smile! It’s a new year. Starting this New Year, we have a hint of hope that ‘good’ changes are in the air. There are signs that the economy is improving, and this inspires hope and creativity. Voice Magazine is embracing ‘good changes’ for 2011. January 2011 is our month to start those changes with new goals, new events, and new ideas. Voice Magazine will celebrate its seventh anniversary in February 2011 – yes - seven years! Like most small businesses, we hold on tightly as we ride the roller coaster of this economy. The challenges bring new ideas and create new pathways. As we move into our eighth year, we are expanding our electronic arena with more options for our readers and advertisers, and expanding our print coverage with our active participation in local events. We will maintain our integrity and bring these ‘good’ changes for the betterment of our product. As we enter this New Year, we ask for your continued support. Our survival and growth are dependent on the support of all of you - advertisers, readers, fans, and partners in our local communities. Thank you – We work to see that the magazine works for you – if it does not work for you – it does not work for us. We are all partners in moving forward. Setting our sights on 2011, Voice Magazine will be taking on new projects and participating in local events to promote our advertisers and their businesses and services. Join us in our ‘round up’ of 2011 activities. Get involved and show your support. Call for details 423-926-9983. Have you ever been so excited to share a dream or idea that you shared your valuable secret with a less than worthy confidante? Perhaps in an effort to find support for your world-changing plan, you “cast your pearl before a swine” and went away disappointed or let down. Many times, I have looked for a kindred soul who has the ability, the attitude and the willingness to help foster what may or may not be a world-changing idea but is, at the very least, a cherished hope. If you’ve been in this situation, don’t lose heart and don’t stop believing. You have the pearls. Now you just need someone who enjoys them. Mark Victor Hansen and Jack Canfield had an idea for a book. They enthusiastically set out with a proposal and in no time received 33 rejection letters from publishers. They were turned down by 134 more at the annual booksellers’ convention. Finally a small publisher agreed to take on their project, but not before they agreed to buy the first 20,000 copies themselves. And they were hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. After their book appeared, it took nearly 14 months of almost nonstop work and promotion to hit the bestseller lists. Today, their book series, Chicken Soup, has sold over 100 million copies and generated more than a billion dollars in sales. Why? Because they persisted in what they knew was a God-given dream even when swine outnumbered pearl lovers more than 100:1. Most people don’t want to be dream crushers. They are simply too busy, too limited in their imagination or are unable to grasp what means so much to you. Take heart. God has put life and energy in you today. There are unique contributions that only you can make to the world. Without you, the world would be a poorer place. Keep honing the dream, understanding that the “dead ends” and delays are only part of the process God is using to develop the character inside that will sustain you when your dream becomes a reality. Persist; the journey is the point. And keep your eyes open for those who are eyeing you to see if you, too, may be a lover of fine pearls.

2011 will bring the back some familiar haircuts, but for the short hair cut, the short pixie will be very popular. People will wear haircuts for short-, medium- and long-hair – all will be very fashionable. The bob style for medium and short hair, as well as bangs and layered haircuts will continue prevailing. And the edgy will continue to sport the asymmetric haircuts and soft waves. The most daring women may cut their long locks, so that they can show their faces, eyes and full lips free-and-easily. Although short hair is usually worn by men, women can boost their self-confidence better if they expose their charms. For those who have busy lives or love practicing sports, Bob style is a style statement and a great choice, because it only needs some hair gel to look nice. Bob style works for medium and short hair, with bangs or layered haircuts, and all will prevail into 2011. Also, the edgy will sport the style of asymmetric haircuts and soft waves. For those who have busy lives or love practicing sports, the Bob style could be a great choice, because it only needs some hair gel to look nice, sophisticated and polished. For those who like long hair, the hair styles 2011 suggest to wear layered haircuts, waves, or straight. Although long hair wouldn’t be the most popular in 2011, it will never be out of fashion. For medium-curly-hair women, hairstyles in 2011 have plenty of new ideas with some layers and curls which will define and add texture to women’s hair. The straight medium hairstyles will be very fashionable in 2011. Just add adornments and braids to give a touch of elegance to your hair in the coming year. 2011 will reintroduce “old” with “new” hair fashions. www.hairstyles2011.com

Tell yourself today...

you are beautiful! SHOP YOUR OWN CLOSET Even when your purse strings are a little tight, you can still beat ever-changing fashion fads by “shopping” your own closet. Your closet is an extension of your personal style, and whether that’s romantic, boho-chic or classic, there’s a way to make it work for you. Here are some helpful tips on how to create a closet worthy of any boutique while maximizing the wardrobe you already own. • Become inspired. Scour magazines and books for outfit inspirations. • Edit. How can you create a chic outfit when you can’t find half your clothes? Clear the clutter and introduce order to an overstuffed closet by taking an inventory of what you already own. Make three piles- keep, donate or discard. And edit your wardrobe to reflect your style and what looks best on you. • Get organized. Go from disorganized to divine with

do-it-yourself closet and room organizers, a smart and budgetfriendly solution for taming disorder. To help locate items later, try grouping your clothes by style (that is, pants, skirts, T-shirts) or by color, with all pieces facing the same way. It makes it easy to coordinate outfits and choose accessories on the fly. • Be creative. With a little imagination and some rearranging, you can create looks with what you already own. Trendy and classic pieces are just lurking somewhere in the depths of your wardrobe-a classic trench, an any-occasion top, that basic black dress or a pencil skirt. Need a quick outfit update? Cardigans add a punch of color while bold belts are an inexpensive way to update your wardrobe. • Assemble a style file. Did a to-die-for outfit just pop into your mind? Jot it down. Keep a binder of outfit snapshots by groups, such as dressy or casual, or by style trends. Your go-to outfit may be just a thought away. • Get inspiration and help getting started. Dear Viola, There's been a lot of talk about date rape drugs. How can I recognize them? -Miss Party Girl

Dear Miss Party Girl, Know where your drink is! These drugs are powerful, dangerous, and can be slipped into your drink when you are not looking. Often they have no color, smell, or taste, so you can't tell if you are being drugged. The drugs can make you become weak and confused — or even pass out — so that you are unable to refuse sex or defend yourself. You might not remember what happened while you were drugged. The three most common date rape drugs are: Rohypnol (roh-HIP-nol) comes as a pill that dissolves in liquids. Newer pills are oval and green-gray in color. When slipped in dark drinks the drug might be hard to see. Effects can be felt within 30 minutes of being drugged and can last for several hours.

GHB, which is short for gamma hydroxybutyric (GAM-muh heye-DROXee-BYOO-tur-ihk) acid. GHB is a liquid with no odor or color, white powder, and pill. It might give your drink a slightly salty taste, easily masked. GHB takes effect in about 15 minutes and can last 3 or 4 hours. It is very potent. Most GHB is made by people in home or street "labs." Ketamine (KEET-uh-meen) comes as a liquid and a white powder. Ketamine is very fast-acting. You might be aware of what is happening to you, but unable to move. So, Miss Party Girl, protect yourself by not accepting drinks from other people and keep your drink with you at all times, even when you go to the bathroom. If you realize you left your drink unattended, pour it out. Have fun, safely. Sincerely, Viola Voice Ask Viola Voice! Do you have a question? We all can use a little extra cash; so, if you are looking for opportunities to make some extra money, look at your hobbies. Talented in making crafts or sewing? Pass your talents to others - teach classes and share your expertise. Also, check out the online auction sites like eBay or etsy.com to sell your artistic pieces. If you have an entrepreneurship, check into local antique shops for available rental space or to consign your items. Contact your local Chamber for events in the area accepting exhibitors and set up as an exhibitor to sell your items, like the local farmer’s market. Got a green thumb? Setting up at a farmer’s market is a great way to sell flowers, plants, herbs, or wreaths for all occasions, or homemade jam or baked goods. Love to shop? So do other women! Start a ‘Closet Clutter Cleaner’ business by offering to help clear out the clutter and organize closets for others. However, when you clear out the clutter from your closet, check into consigning those items at consignment boutiques. This is a good way to have a little extra cash or purchase ‘new to you’ clothing. Are you the family chef? Got a specialty like fried apple pies, cupcakes, or Grandma’s favorite banana nut bread? Seek out restaurants, convenient stores, or eateries that are willing to buy from you. If you will deliver and offer an item that is a good seller for them, you may be able to establish an ongoing route selling baked goods. This could be a year-round opportunity. Hobbies range from hiking, animals, sports, or personal talents. If you enjoy hiking, become a hiking guide. Love bike riding? Teach others how. Know how to ride a ‘Harley?’ What about those seeking their first motorcycle – charge for instructional classes. Love music? You have an opportunity to offer music lessons on how to read music, or how to play a musical instrument. From pet sitting and dog walking services to teaching bowling and dancing to seniors, make a commitment this new year to enjoy what you do and do what you enjoy- and make extra cash. Other suggestions: • If you and a chef can connect, offer romantic dinner packages for special occasions to individuals or groups which include meal preparation, live romantic music performance, and meal clean up. • Offer photography services for families. • Sell paintings online. • Paint murals in residential homes. • Teach an art class at a community center. • Design web pages or blog layouts. www.suite101.com/money-making-hobbies

What's the difference between New Year’s Resolutions and New Year's goals? Is there a difference? There does seem to be confusion. By definition, resolution is the process of resolving, meaning that you made a decision or determination to do something. A goal, by definition, is something that you want to achieve. So, which comes first? Do we set a goal or a resolution first? Is a resolution the fuel for a goal? In setting goals, we do many times set the resolutions subconsciously. For example, if you decide to lost 10 pounds as a New Year's goal, you have decided (resolution) to lose weight. The number of 10 pounds is the goal that you are aiming to achieve. Whether you chose to say resolutions or goals, what makes the success in achieving your resolutions or your goals greatly depends on your attitude. If you approach your goals with the attitude of having to 'give up' something, you are most likely going to be defeated. No one wants to 'give up' that pie or cake to lose weight. Positive thinking would be changing your thought process to think of 'adding to.' How so? You are adding a dance class to your schedule to lose weight. You decide to add more vegetables to your diet. If you think about what you are 'adding' instead of focusing on what you are 'giving up,' you are likely to feel better about the goals with successful results. It is the power of positive thinking. Crush the negative thoughts by training yourself to look for a 'positive' to help you achieve your goals. For a positive accomplishment: • Create a plan, and write down your resolution and plan for your goal. MyGoals.com (for a fee) exists to help you formulate a plan, which helps with a commitment to stick to it. But even if you don't use myGoals.com, commit your resolution and plan to writing someplace, such as a notebook or journal. • Think 'Year Round,' Not Just New Year's- Nothing big gets accomplished in one day. Resolutions are set in one day and serve as a starting point, but they are accomplished with a 100 tiny steps that happen throughout the year. • Remain Flexible- Expect that your plan to change, but keep your focus. Here's wishing you success in attaining your resolutions and/or goals for the New Year and beyond!

Bristol Women Celebrate 100 Years of Achievement

On Saturday, March 5, 2011 at 5pm the Women’s Empowerment Network of Bristol will host their 4th Annual International Women’s Day Celebration. This year the group has partnered with the Voice Magazine for Women to promote this celebration and fundraiser to support the Bristol Recovery Road for Women. The charity organization provides support to local women who are re-integrating back into society from the judicial system, by providing housing, schooling, and job placement assistance. The very first International Women’s Day event was celebrated in 1911 and on March 8, 2011 celebrates its 100th anniversary of honoring women and their achievements in obtaining equality around the world. Although in many parts of the world, this movement has made great strides there is still much more to be done to obtain world-wide equality for women and other minority groups. This is a day to honor those who have fought and in some cases given their lives, to be thankful for the freedoms we have today, and focus on the challenges we still face to live in harmony with our ever changing world. The Women’s Empowerment Network of Bristol and Voice Magazine invite you to share an evening

Decorating with Flea Market & Salvage Finds By: Martha McGlothlin Gayle I’ve always been a flea market, yard sale and salvage yard junkie. I can’t count how many times I’ve dragged my mom to a dirty old warehouse or Saturday morning garage sale in hopes of snatching that one great find. I love to have yard sales too; I had one every summer for Martha McGlothlin 10 years at my Granny’s Gayle house (mom went to them with me but she wasn’t sponsoring one!). I’m amazed by the inexpensive finds you can score. Scouring these events for years has allowed me to amass quite a collection of salvaged items to use in my new house. And despite everyone calling me a hoarder for years, I think they’re quite surprised by the old things I’ve made new. I’ve saved money and my house is a little greener due to the recycling! Some tips when flea-marketing: the early bird gets the best finds! Wear old clothes; you never know into what dark, dirty crevices you may have to dig. Tribute to Women recognizes the contributions and achievements of outstanding women throughout the Tri-Cities. “For the past 20 years, the YWCA has had the privilege of recognizing women who have made substantial contributions in the areas of arts, business, education, and charitable fields in our community with our Tribute to Women award,” says Jennie Barron, chairwoman of the 2011 Tribute to Women Steering Committee. “We are very blessed in this area to have so many talented and dedicated women giving so much of themselves and enriching their communities.” This year, 12 women will be chosen and honored at a banquet in April 2011. Nominees who have made significant contributions in the fields of art, business and professional, education and community service are sought for this prestigious award. Businesses, clubs, civic groups, churches, schools and corporations are encouraged to nominate up to three women. The deadline for nominations is February 15, 2011. In addition to being a wonderful way to recognize the efforts of the pillars of our community, Tribute to Women is also the largest fundraiser for the YWCA. “Tribute allows the YWCA to provide programs that make a difference in the lives of all in the community – small children, young adults, middle-aged and the elderly,” says Kathy Waugh, YWCA Executive Director. During the past 20 years, nearly $1.7 million has been raised to support the YWCA mission of eliminating racism and empowering women. The nomination form and an online tutorial for completing the form are available on the YWCA Web site at www.ywcabristol.org. To learn more about Tribute to Women, visit www.ywcabristol.org or call (423) 968-9444.

can figure that out later! Negotiate with the seller; they expect that. Don’t discard an item just because it’s dirty or needs work. With a little elbow grease almost anything can be revived, reworked, rewired, repainted and reborn! Look at items with an open mind. It’s fun to use an item for something other than its original purpose. And finally, cash is king! Don’t expect to use credit cards anywhere out on the salvage trail. Here are some examples of ways I’ve used salvage items in decorating: a turquoise water fountain for the kids from an old school and a mosaic over my stove (both pictured). The mosaic, done by local artist Holly Thomas, contains my grandmothers’ silver, old keys, broken dishes, rocks and shells I’ve collected, and my uncle’s marbles (he lost them, I found them), among other memorabilia. I’ve found lots of lighting and had it rewired, including an old wire golf ball basket from a driving range that when turned upside down is a cool light in my laundry room. An old miner’s light from my grandfather’s shop serves as a sconce in my kids’ playroom. A French door with layers of turquoise paint is now my craft room door. Mantles over fireplaces were salvaged from a warehouse that weathered Katrina. A door on a closet was in my dad’s old house and a stone wall near my driveway contains old bricks from demolished buildings and rocks my uncle found. It’s fun to live in a house that can tell a story! Use your imagination and you can have one-of-a-kind pieces in your home. Happy hunting!

Who has the best pizza in Johnson City? The people will soon decide at a charity event to be held on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011, from 5 to 11 p.m., to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Johnson City/Washington County. Hosted by the newly-formed Young Professionals of the Tri-Cities, the event, called Pie Wars: The Clash of the Slices, will pit pizza parlors from around Johnson City against each other for a shot at claiming the title. “YP Tri is an organization for hardworking, young professionals who want to make a difference in their community,” said Pie Wars organizer and YP Tri Director Samara Litvack. “We wanted to host a party for grownups to benefit the kids of the Boys and Girls Club that would be fun, unique and benefit the community. Pie Wars is it.” Attendees will judge samples of pizza from Knight’s Sports Bar, Luke’s, Main Street Pizza, Mellow Mushroom, One 12 Downtown, Pizza Inn, and Scratch Brick Oven in three scheduled rounds: cheese, pepperoni and chef’s choice. Tickets to the event give attendees a vote in each round, a beer tasting by RJ Rockers, a wine tasting, music by DJ CosMoore and The Jones Boys Band, and will give attendees the

chance to win a variety of door prizes donated by local businesses. A cash bar will also be available. Within the event will be two competitions: Man vs. Pizza, in which participants compete against each other in a race to finish a large pizza pie, and a bracketed cornhole tournament. Commemorative photographs by Foto Montage will also be sold. “We’ve had a tremendous show of support from not only the pizza vendors, but also from many other businesses around the city who have donated everything we need to make this event a success,” Litvack said. Thanks to this support, all event proceeds will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Johnson City/Washington County. A list of all current sponsors, a full description of the event, and a schedule of pizza rounds can be found under the “notes” section of YP Tri’s Facebook page, at www.facebook.com/yptri. Visit www.piewars.eventbrite.com to purchase a ticket or email info@yptri.org for further information. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door; attendees must be 21 years old or older.

Out with the OLD Do you know when to toss household items? Watch Voice Magazine’s monthly segment on Daytime Tri-Cities!

The start of a New Year can serve as an opportunity to clean out the clutter in our lives, and toss away the ‘old’ to make room for the ‘new.’ But you do know the shelf life of your everyday household items? Many food items do have expiration dates, but without expiration dates, is save to serve them? What is a save timeline? How long should we keep our mattress? Do cosmetics have expiration dates? Below are items with recommendations on suggested time lines from healthy living to safety: 1. Vitamins– 3 years if there’s no date on the bottle. Over time, active ingredients break down and the pills lose their potency. 2. Passwords– 30 to 90 days – Hacking programs can zip through 30,000 words in one second. For a password that’s tough to crack yet still easy to remember, convert a sentence into letters and number. For example, turn “I want to go to Maui in 2014” into “Iw2g2M4.” 3. Contact lens case– 3 months – You’ll reduce your risk of eye infections from parasites and fungi that grow in the case. 4. Bed sheets– one to two weeks (WASH) – Germs from your skin, mouth, and nose multiply on dirty sheets and can cause respiratory, gastrointestinal, skin, and eye infections. 5. Pillow– one year – Dead mites and their droppings can make up 10% of a 2 year-old pillow’s weight. 6. Toothbrush– 3months – Frayed and splayed bristles do an inferior job of scraping plaque. Plus, an old brush may harbor bacteria, increasing your risk of gingivitis. It is always a good idea to toss your toothbrush after you get over a sickness. 7. Mattresses– seven to ten years – These should be replaced every seven years since any uneven sagging can cause you to have trouble sleeping and stress on your back, not to mention their permanent collection of dust, dirt, and allergens. 8. Motor Oil– 5,000 – 20,000 miles – (or as recommended by your owner’s manual) Express oil-change outfit push 3,000 miles intervals, but you can stretch it. Synthetic oils are more expensive, but they do a better job of protecting your engine from heat and water. 9. Smoke alarm– eight to ten years – The technology is always improving; your alarm should not be outdated. But like any device, an old one can fail. 10. Running shoes– 7 months – (If you’re running 10 miles a week) Shoes lose their shock absorption and stability, putting your more at risk of knee and ankle injuries. 11. Loofahs– one month – They have the potential of spreading bacteria and it can grow in their nooks and crannies easily, but synthetic sponges are more resistant and can last up to eight weeks. 12. Kitchen sponges– two weeks to eight weeks – Cleaning, nuking, and drying out your kitchen sponges between washes will help keep them bacteria-free, but you should throw out heavily used sponges every two weeks, or up to eight weeks for those used less vigorously. 13. Mascara and liquid eyeliner– 3 months – if you mascara or the eyeliner isn't dry, clumpy, or smells foul then you should be okay for 3 to 6 months. And as for pencil eyeliner, it can last up to 1-2 years, if properly stored and sharpened regularly. 14. Eggs– three weeks – To be on the safer side, it is best to store eggs in their shells for not more than 3 weeks – eggs should be refrigerated. 15. Herbs and spices– one to four years – Stored in an airtight container, in a cool, dry place, spices retain their potency longer than you'd think — as long as 4 years for whole spices, 2 to 3 years for ground spices, and 1 to 3 years for leafy herbs, depending on the herb. Research information provided by Menʼs Health, Womenʼs Health & USDA Agricultural.

Did you know? You may not be getting enough sleep. Lack of sleep can contribute to weight gain, though experts aren't exactly sure why. In her article, Sleep More to Lose Weight, Mary Shomon discusses a recent study that found that women who slept 5 hours a night were more likely to gain weight than women who slept 7 hours a night. The reasons? Some studies have shown that losing sleep could affect metabolism by making you feel hungry, even if you're not. Sleep deprivation may affect the secretion of cortisol, one of the hormones that regulates appetite. There's also a theory that we move around less when we don't get enough sleep, which means we burn less calories. Getting enough sleep is crucial if you're trying to lose weight, not just because of how it affects you physically, but mentally as well. Sleep deprivation makes you cranky, confused and can even make you feel depressed or angry. Make sleep a priority by trying to get to bed at the same time each night, shooting for about 8 hours, if you can manage it. Having some bedtime rituals such as a hot bath or some time writing down your worries can help you unwind before bed. You can also try power napping, which can be a great way to reduce stress and increase your productivity. You're too stressed out. Stress and weight gain (or lack of weight loss) go hand in hand. Though you may not be aware of it, being under constant stress can increase production of the hormone cortisol which can cause an increase in appetite as well as extra fat storage around the region--a big no-no since abdominal fat is linked to diabetes, high cholesterol and other health problems.

YW Fitness Spa offers Weight Loss Challenge Even after just a few weeks into the new year, many people start falling off the resolution wagon. The YWCA fitness professionals understand that it takes support and accountability to stay on track. For this reason, the YW is launching an eight-week Weight Loss Challenge starting on February 15th. All women in our community are invited to visit the YWomen’s Fitness Spa on a complementary week pass to learn how to get involved. “Our goal is to provide participants with as much support as possible, in as many ways as we can to help our members be successful,” states Honaker. Each member will receive individualized workouts, motivational phone calls and emails, as well as educational seminars. “This challenge is not just about losing weight, but empowering women to make lifestyle changes that improve their overall health” says Rhonda Honaker, YWCA Women’s Special Fitness Programs Coordinator. At the beginning of the challenge, participant’s weight, body mass index, and measurements will be taken to determine a baseline and then taken again at the end of the eight weeks to determine her results. The YW Weight Loss Challenge is free for Fitness Spa members and $50 for non-members. Participation includes the use of all YWomen’s Fitness Spa amenities for the duration of the program. If you are interested in participating, please call 423-968-9444 for more information.

EXERCISE AND STRESS RELIEF: Learn how to work yourself out of the blues Life is full of surprises...not all of them good. Life's little events can often cause stress, anxiety and a bad case of the blues. Some of these we expect--the change from fall to winter is often a rough transition for many of us and bad weather can make you feel tired and cranky. The holidays are often a rollercoaster of emotions, bringing out our best and, sometimes, our worst. Then there are the unexpected surprises--losing a job, moving to a new city, contracting an illness, fender benders and other events, big and small that test our mental strength. Unfortunately, we can't predict the future, but we can find ways to relieve stress in healthy ways. One of the best ways to work out the stress and pull yourself out of the dumps is to move your body. Soothe Yourself with Exercise When we feel down or depressed, we look for things that make us feel good. Often, we reach for the wrong things--food, alcohol, sleep or drugs...most of which make us feel worse instead of better. It's important to take care of yourself when you’re feeling blue and there's nothing wrong with a little indulgence...as long as it's healthy and something that will genuinely make you feel better. Rather than reach for the chocolate when you're stressed, think of something you enjoy doing...something that feels good to you. It might be working in the garden, taking a slow bike ride or taking a walk with a friend. Think of activities you like but rarely allow yourself time to do then commit to doing them as often as you can. Rhythmic activities like walking, raking leaves or even cleaning can be healing exercises--as your body gets into its own rhythms, you can let your mind go and work out problems, find solutions or just daydream for awhile. Try these ideas for a little stress relief: Take baby steps. Thinking about 30 minutes of an activity may feel overwhelming when your energy is low. Decide you'll just do a few minutes of something. Chances are, you'll start to feel more energetic and will keep going. Keep it simple. Sometimes the thought of changing into workout clothes can seem like climbing a mountain. Choose activities that require very little preparation like walking, gardening, cleaning the house or some gentle stretching.

Ask for support. It helps to have a workout buddy to keep you honest. Try to get a friend or family member to meet you once a week for a walk in the park or a local fitness class. Knowing someone's waiting for you makes it easier to get going. Make the transition easier. If you tend to stay more sedentary when you feel blue, going from sitting to something active can seem like a big jump. Give yourself 5 or 10 minutes to get your body moving a bit before exercise. Do a little cleaning or take out the trash. Take some time to stretch or simply walk around the house a bit. Give yourself extra time to warm up. If you're doing a high intensity activity (like running or aerobics), give yourself more warm up time than usual. If you usually start out jogging, start with a slow walk. Allow your body all the time it needs to get warm and allow your heart rate to climb gently. Give yourself extra time to cool down. It's always a good idea to end your workout feeling good. Give yourself a good ten minutes to wind down and then spend a few minutes stretching. www.about.com

People are so worried about what they eat between Christmas and the New Year, but they really should be worried about what they eat between the New Year and Christmas.

Add the tomato paste and olives (or tapenade) and stir for 30 seconds. Add PHOTO BY MARCUS NILSSON the wine and deglaze the pan; add the milk and reduce the heat to a simmer. Add nutmeg to taste and simmer the ragù while you cook the pasta. Bring a large pot of water to a boil, salt it, add the pasta and cook until al dente. Drain, reserving 1 cup of the pasta cooking water. Return the pasta to the hot pot with half of the finely crumbled feta. Discard the bay leaf and cinnamon stick. you are important! Free In-Home Consultations! 744 Gray Station Rd. • Gray, TN • 423-979-0001

By Crystal Robertson, UT Extension Agent

Let’s face it. Whether employed or unemployed, we could all use a little extra money, especially when paying credit card bills now that the holidays are over. A home business is a good way to add to your income and be your own boss. Home businesses are becoming increasingly popular as more people are turning their Crystal Robertson time and talents into profits. Starting a home business is not easy, but it can be rewarding. One important trait you must possess is a commitment to the success of your business and to making a profit. Remember that you are starting a business, not a hobby, and must be willing to devote extra time and effort to it, especially when you are getting established. Ask yourself what personal resources you have that can be used to generate income. The skills you have are not shared by everyone. Your unique skills are worth money! Make a list of things you are good at, and then consider unique possibilities within that realm. For example, if you are good at bargain hunting, you could sell your yard sale finds online. If you are good at growing things, you could maintain gardens or plantings in businesses or homes. Just remember that some businesses may require special training, licensing, or insurance. Make sure you research your ideas fully before you decide what you will do. Next, set a price to charge for your work. This may prove to be the most difficult part. Helping out friends and family from time to time is ok, but it is also ok, even practical, to expect to be compensated for your unique skills. While there is no hard and fast rule for what you should be paid, you should expect no less than minimum wage. In the case of work that is highly skilled, you can and should ask for more than that. To compute your worth, multiply your hours worked by your hourly fee, then add your supplies to the total. Determine how much you want to be paid and negotiate your terms up front before you actually do any work. Finally, consider your Start-up Capital. What money, equipment, or space do you need to begin turning your resources into income? Take inventory of your possessions and decide which ones may serve your purposes. If money is tight, you can always start small, which will give you a feeling for what you are undertaking before a major commitment. The key is to START! If you wait until you have “enough” money or “extra” time, you may never begin. Outline a plan and commit to making daily progress toward your goal. For more information, go to www.tennesseeanytime.org/business/smallbusinesses or contact your local Extension office.

Calling all artists and art lovers! VENUE, located in downtown Johnson City, will be hosting their first ever Starving Artist Night on Tuesday, January 25, 2011. This event is just one of the many public events and socials that Brandi Woodall, the co-owner of both VENUE and Positive Approach Events & Consulting, will be creating in the New Year. “A few years ago I took a trip out to the east coast and noticed the thriving art scene and how the area seemed to openly support the arts. I walked away with an idea to create an art event, says Brandi. “While putting together a calendar for events with my husband/partner, we talked a lot about music. But then I remembered the event idea I had years prior and knew the Starving Artist Night would be a perfect fit for VENUE. Currently, we already have a small showing for Tony Henson, the President of the Kingsport Art Guild. So everything just fell into place for this event. The event will take place from 7:00pm until 9:30pm and will feature art exhibits and sales, live music and economical drink specials for “starving artists thanks to The Main Street Pizza Company. The cover charge for non-exhibitors is $5.00, a small price to pay to see amazing art, hear some great music, and network with like-minded artists. Exhibitor registrations are currently being accepted, but are limited to a first-come first-serve basis. VENUE is located at 300 E. Main Street on the second floor of the historic King Centre. VENUE is more than just another event site, it’s a space dedicated to the success of each event. Our facility is designed to make anything possible! For more information about becoming an exhibitor or the event, check out our facebook page www.facebook.com/venuejc or visit us online at http://venuejc.com.
