M-O-T-H-E-R "M" is for the million things she gave me, "O" means only that she's growing old, "T" is for the tears she shed to save me, "H" is for her heart of purest gold; "E" is for her eyes, with love-light shining, "R" means right, and right she'll always be, Put them all together, they spell "MOTHER," A word that means the world to me. Howard Johnson (c. 1915) Thought of the month: “No one is useless in the world who lightens the burdens of another.” –Charles Dickens Verse of the month: “Love is patient; love is kind. Love is not jealous; is not proud; is not conceited; does not act foolishly; is not selfish; is not easily provoked to anger; keeps no record of wrongs; takes no pleasure in unrighteousness, but rejoices in the truth; love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NKJV

Barter Theatre promises that a craving for a good, laugh-filled, Southern comedy will be satisfied in the upcoming production, “The Red Velvet Cake War.” Before writing this play with Jessie Jones and Nicholas Hope, and many others, playwright Jamie Wooten spent many seasons with Dorothy, Blanche, Rose and Sophia as a writer/producer of the classic television series, The Golden Girls. Jones, Hope and Wooten are currently enjoying the reputation of being three of the most widelyproduced comedic playwrights in America. All’s fair in true love and red velvet cake as these man-chasing, red velvet cakebaking, monkey-shine cuttin’ ladies throw the most memorable family reunion ever. “We all have stories about the uncle who passed out in the mashed potatoes at

Thanksgiving dinner, or the cousin who kept squirrel tails in the garage, or the aunt who went running naked through the neighborhood in the middle of the night,” said Director Nicholas Piper. “You may not have exactly those stories to share, but I bet there’s something you’re chuckling about right now.” Preheat your family’s schedule now for this delicious, Southern comedy and get a heapin’-helpin’ of “The Red Velvet Cake War” at Barter Theatre beginning May 31. I recently heard this testimony from a young mother. She had been trying to teach her little girl about how much Jesus loves her. At every opportunity, she explained in simple language how He sacrificed Himself on the cross so that the child could be free from her sin and have forgiveness, eternal life and heaven. One day the child came to her mother and said with wide-eyed exuberance, “Mommy! Mommy! Jesus has something written on His hand. Do you know what it is?” “What is it?” asked the mother, eager to hear about her daughter’s discovery. “It’s Haley! It’s my name!” she exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with delight. She raised her own little hand to her mother’s face and, pointing to her palm for emphasis, explained, “He wrote it there with the nail that held His hand on the cross.” The mother’s eyes welled up with tears as she realized the Holy Spirit was revealing to the opening mind of her daughter what is meant in Isaiah 49:15,16, “Can a woman forget her sucking child that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands.” Do you feel like God has forgotten you? Has sickness or grief made your way dark and steep and rough? Does it seem as though you are lost in a wilderness of pain or sorrow? Are you weary from the burden of guilt you carry? God loves you and cannot ever forget about you. He remembers the very moment you were conceived. He knows the life you’ve lived. Every tear you’ve ever cried has been gathered up in His bottle. He knows the pain you’ve felt, the burdens you’ve carried, the trials you’ve been through, the sins you’ve committed. You can never mess up so badly that He won’t love you or can’t forgive you. He is with you even when you are so overwhelmed by numbing circumstances that you can’t see or hear Him. And through it all, He is working. If you have asked Him to come into your life, He will give you comfort, strength and help. He will bring blessings out of losses, pick you up when you stumble, turn your weakness into strength and give you beauty for ashes. He has “graven thee on the palms of my hands.”

WOW your MOM Top Tips to Make Mother’s Day Memorable By Crystal Robertson, UT Extension Agent- Unicoi County If you have ever taken your mom out to eat on Mother’s Day, you know it is one of the busiest days of the year in the restaurant business. Although taking your mother out to eat is a nice gesture, and means Mom does not have to cook, it’s a crowded experience with long wait times that is soon over and done. If you have a yearly Mother’s Day Crystal Robertson routine of the same-ol’-same-ol,’ this year why not do something different? This is a day to honor our mothers, so think about what she loves and what she has wanted on other ordinary days. Choose an activity that would suit your mom’s preferences. Make it happen and make this day special. Here are a few unconventional ways to celebrate Mother’s Day or at least jumpstart your imagination. Make it local and have a Happy Mother’s Day no matter what you decide to do. • Make something with her. Join in craft-making, art or cakedecorating classes offered at local Michael’s or Hobby Lobby stores. If she enjoys painting, also consider taking her to one of the paint-your-own pottery studios located around the area. • If she would rather shop and just look at arts and crafts, take her to the Heartwood Artisan Center in Abingdon, VA. Shop local artisans and enjoy local culture and food. They are also offering a special Gospel Brunch for Mother’s Day at Heartwood, and reservations are recommended. Call 276-492-2400.

Cute & Sassy Kitchen Aprons These kitchen aprons are one of the most fun and useful Mother's Day gift ideas we've seen in a while. If Mom is cooking, there's no reason she can't do it in style! FlirtyAprons.com

• Take her to a nearby living history farm, such as the Exchange Place in Kingsport or Rocky Mount in Piney Flats. Journey back in time to a simpler way of living and enjoy the day hearing stories about our local history. • Consider taking your mom to visit a friend or family member that she rarely sees, or take her to a special place from her childhood. Driving for an hour or two to make your mom happy is a cool way to spend this Mother's Day. • Go with your mom to get photographs together. You'll treasure these photographs and so will she. The photos don't have to be ordinary - consider fun photo studios where you dress up like you're in the Wild West or similar photos. Make sure you have an appointment in advance. • Take her for a relaxing afternoon stroll through one of the local vineyards or wineries, and just unwind. Most local wineries offer free tastings and tours, but not all of them are open on Sundays. Be sure to check with them in advance. • Does your mom love old time bluegrass and country music? Make a weekend of it, and go see Ralph Stanley II at the Carter Fold on Saturday night, then check out the Mountain Music Museum in the Bristol Mall on Sunday, which is dedicated to preserving great song-writing legacies from the Birthplace of Country Music. No matter what you decide, simply giving her your time will be a gift she will always be happy to receive.

Adriana Trigiani’s appearance in Bristol at the Paramount had her audience in tears – from laughter. Her energetic sense of humor was projected through her heartwarming stories about her hometown, Big Stone Gap, Virginia, and the people she knew who made an appearance in her debut novel, Big Stone Gap. ONE IS HEALTHIER ? Circle: 1. A. Romaine lettuce B. Spinach 2. A. Red Peppers B. Green Peppers 3. A. Baked Potato B. Sweet Potato 4. A. Blueberries B. Blackberries 5. A. Almond Butter B. Peanut Butter 6. A. Milk Chocolate B. Dark Chocolate 7. A. Wild Rice B. Brown Rice 8. A. Pecans B. Walnuts 9. A. Butter B. Margarine 10. A. Salmon B. Tuna Answers:

1. (B. Spinach) While the two leafy green vegetables are similar in calories, fiber and folate, spinach takes the win with extra healthy ingredients that romaine does not have, such as lutein, calcium and vitamins C and A. 2. (A. Red Peppers) Both red and green peppers offer health benefits, but red peppers have a significantly larger amount of potassium, vitamin C, folate and beta-carotene. 3. (B. Sweet Potatoes) Anything orange is packed with beta-carotene, which sweet potatoes have plenty of, but baked potatoes do not. Plus, sweet potatoes have much more fiber and calcium than white potatoes. 4. (B. Blackberries) Blackberries have fewer calories plus two times the amount of fiber and vitamin C compared to blueberries; not to mention, quadruple the amount of calcium. 5. (A. Almond Butter) Both butters are a good source of protein and the good kinds of fat, but the almond butter provides more vitamin E, magnesium, calcium and iron. Just be sure to find one that has not been over-processed. 6. (B. Dark Chocolate) Milk chocolate has more dairy fat than dark chocolate, while dark chocolate contains more of the cocoa beans, which are loaded with antioxidants. 7. (A. Wild Rice) Contrary to popular belief, brown rice is not the healthiest rice on the market. Wild rice, which has fewer calories per serving, also has double the zinc and five times the folate. 8. (B. Walnuts) Both nuts have the heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, but walnuts have less total fat and more calcium, magnesium and folate. 9. (B. Margarine) Neither butter nor margarine are free of artery-clogging trans-fat, but margarine has less than butter, and the softer the margarine, the less trans-fat it has. Opt for tubs of margarine rather than margarine sticks. 10. (A. Salmon) Because tuna eat fish that eat other fish, they become full of toxins such as mercury and other heavy metals. Salmon feed on smaller crustaceans and do not have any of the toxins of tuna.

ABINGDON, VA “Legally Blonde: The Musical” Opens at Barter Theatre Shakespeare may have written “To thine own self be true,” but Elle Woods is about to prove to everyone that being true to yourself never goes out of style in Barter Theatre’s “Legally Blonde: The Musical" opening on May 16 at Barter Main Stage. Based on the Hollywood blockbuster-turned-Broadway musical sensation, the singing, dancing, feel good tale reminds us that it’s okay to be who we are—especially when it comes to love. It’s worth going to the ends of the earth for love. And in this case, Barter Theatre and a woman’s love is taking audiences to Harvard Law School. When Elle Woods’ boyfriend, Warner Huntington, III, dumps her at the end of senior year in college for someone who is more ‘serious,’ Elle doesn’t think she will recover. That is, until a bright idea ignites. She’ll just follow Warner to Harvard and prove she can be what he’s looking for. First task: get into the illustrious Ivy-league institution. Elle trades parties for practice tests, and through hard work and determination, she achieves her goal. Now the hard part begins: actual law school. She soon realizes that practicing law can help others when she helps a friend regain custody of her dog. After all, “no woman should ever be separated from her dog.” Elle begins to compromise herself and get discouraged that people just think she’s one big blonde joke. But, when she receives encouragement from other women, she gets back in the game and does it with her own style. “This feel-good musical proves that women don’t take ‘no’ for an answer, and we will go after what we want when we set

our minds to it,” said Lori Hester, director of patron services. “I believe it will entertain and be inspiring to women of all ages, from teen girls all the way up.” Memorable songs like “Bend and Snap,” “Whipped Into Shape,” “Run Rufus Run” and “So Much Better” punctuate this perfectly perky production. This feel-good story and the singing and dancing will have women everywhere celebrating Elle’s story. Newcomer Ellie Mooney plays the bubbly, spirited Elle Woods. The cast is outstanding and has all the Barter favorites including Sean Campos (the MC, “Cabaret,”) Wendy Piper (who recently stepped up in the lead role as Violet in “9 to 5: The Musical,”) Erin Parker (who delighted audiences with her big voice and big portrayal of Doralee Rhodes, who was Dolly Parton’s character in “9 to 5: The Musical,”) Holly Williams (Belle, “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast” last year,) Hannah Ingram (Sally Bowles, “Cabaret,”) Ashley Campos, Nicholas Piper and Tricia Matthews is returning to Barter’s stage after a brief hiatus. Barter Theatre held auditions for the two dogs who make special appearances in “Legally Blonde: The Musical.” A local corgi-huahua, Penelope, will play the part of Elle’s dog Bruiser, and Spud, an English bulldog, will play Paulette’s dog, Rufus. This production is the acting debut for both pups although Penelope has done some modeling. LADIES! Barter Theatre is also offering the Pretty in Pink discount ticket package for groups of seven or more, celebrating Elle’s signature color. Plus, each member in your group will receive a pink “Legally Blonde: The Musical” tote, signed cast poster, discount to a service at the spa at The Martha Hotel and Spa and more. Make it a weekend with the gals. This is perfect for your mom, sisters, aunts or just a group of your favorite girlfriends. Carved From Our Past July 28th - August 12th The Virginia Highlands Festival celebrates its sixty-fourth year of continuing with the dreams of Robert Porterfield, who in 1948 held the first festival on the front porch of the Martha Washington Inn. His purpose was to preserve and celebrate the cultural heritage of this area. This year the Virginia Highlands Festival will be held from July 28th until August 12th, with the Antiques Market limited to July 28th until August 5th. The Festival has grown into a regional festival representing all of Southwest Virginia. Now, it not only preserves the arts, crafts and skills that developed in this region, but also imports talented artists and performers from all over the USA and the world for the enjoyment of area residents and visitors. This year’s festival theme is “Carved From Our Past” and is dedicated in the memory of Mary Porterfield, Robert’s wife, who passed away this year. Our signature artist, John Dickens, who carved his art to depict Robert Porterfield said, “Bob started the festival, but it was Mary who kept it going.” On the Saturdays of the festival, come meet John Dickens and see the signature art before it is moved, on loan, to Barter Theatre. Even though the Festival doesn’t officially begin until 10 a.m. on July 28th, there will be a couple of events that occur earlier. The Fine Arts committee will present a Fine Arts workshop in water coloring at the Christ the King Catholic Church Community Room from Tuesday through Saturday, July 24-28, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., as well as the Fine Arts reception, July 27th at 7:00 p.m., at the Arts Depot. Also the popular Antique Market Early Bird Show, on July 28th from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. beside the SWVA Higher Ed Center, for those antique shoppers who want to get the first jump on antique shopping. The festival will officially open at 10 a.m. on July 28th at both the Antiques Market and the Arts and Crafts on Remsburg Drive and will culminate with the popular street party at 8 p.m. on July 28th at Depot Square with the introduction of LEGGZ, a retro band from Roanoke, who perform favorite music from today’s hits to Motown and Classic rock. They have opened concerts to rave reviews for such well-known acts as Bon Jovi, Robert Cray and the Doobie Brothers. The Juried Arts and Crafts Show will be held July 28 through August 12, 2012, along Remsburg Drive starting at the Abingdon Market Pavilion. Visit the many professional crafts people who show, demonstrate and sell their wares. Music is a mainstay of the Festival and this year is no exception. An annual local group, ‘Susan Brown and Friends’ is back by popular demand for opening Sunday, July 29th. On Barter’s stage, July 29th at 7:30 p.m., will be Richard Leigh, songwriter of many tunes, most notable are “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue ” and “The Greatest Man I Never Knew.” Richard started college at VA Highlands Community College and says, “If it wasn’t for Abingdon, there’d been no “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue.” Celtic weekend, on August 4th and 5th, will feature the “Maidens IV” a wholehearted and full of life, highaction Celtic & Folk music group who mixes hints of Rock, World and the flavor of Gypsy Jazz will perform both days. Arvel Bird, a Celtic, Contemporary Native American, dubbed worldwide as “Lord of the Strings,” will also perform on August 4th and 5th. Arvel began his career with Glen Campbell and has performed with Loretta Lynn and Tom T. Hall. The Festival will end with the popular Phantom Street Dance, and of course, Monroe Jameson’s Blue Grass Festival. On August 5th at 7:30 p.m. at Barter Theatre, the Performing Arts will present the

charming Faye Lane’s "Beauty Shop Stories,” glittered-up memories of a Green Bean Queen in bedazzling story and songs of the beauty shop her mother owned and where Faye grew up. On August 6th at 7:30 p.m., Robert Post will perform at Barter. Robert is a brilliant physical comedian with a stunning theatrical mind. Combine a quart of dry humor with three tablespoons of expert mime, versatile acting, and skilled juggling; add a keen sense of satire and the absurd, and you’ve got Post Comedy Theatre. Discover those special, hard-to-find Antique items at this 45,000-square-foot Market, daily from July 28th till August 5th. For many people, it's the centerpiece of the Festival. Antique lovers spend days browsing through tents filled with an impressive array of fine formal and country furniture, top-end collectibles, folk art, jewelry, accessories, books and primitives. Dealers from all over the U.S. offer fine period furniture, porcelain, sterling silver, quilts, clothing, paintings, rugs and more. Dealers always restock, so be sure to visit more than once! Magicians, jugglers, balloons and parades bring out the child in all of us. Each day will be packed with activities and fun for the entire family. Youth arts and crafts and Music events will be brought back along Remsburg Drive, and don’t forget “Abingdon’s Got Talent,” August 8th at 6:30 p.m., when local teens and tweens are invited to show off their talents. This event is open to all talent, not just singing. It is free to enter. Cash prizes will be awarded. For those who are adventuresome, there will be walks along the Channels and the Appalachian Trail. Spend lazy mornings and afternoons exploring our misty Appalachian landscapes, the forested hillsides, sweeping vistas and the pastures filled with cattle and old barns. Local experts will show you the geological faces of the area, and naturalists will guide you on leisurely walks looking for wild plants and animals. Whether by foot or by bike, get a close-up look at ecology, wildlife habitats, farms, cave environments and mountain top stargazing. For the more cultural events there is the Fine Arts at the Arts Depot where beautiful juried paintings are displayed for your enjoyment and purchase. Also hear the art talks by Ed Chitwood, who gives his interpretation of many of these fine works. Then there is the two day Creative Writing Workshops at the Higher Education Center on July 30th and 31st, with workshops on how to write plays, songs, poetry or how to get your work published. Southwest Virginia is full of history, and each day during the Festival there will be stories told by people in period dress on site telling the stories of "The Battle of Kings Mountain." "Living in the Backcountry" will be presented by members of the General William Campbell Sons of the American Revolution, Black's Fort Daughters of the American Revolution, Historical Society of Washington County, VA, and the Over Mountain Victory Trail Association. This will occur daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can also walk along a segment of the Over Mountain Victory National Historic Trail. Park Ranger guided tours, colonial games and educational activities will round out your historic day. The Home & Garden Committee Kitchen Tour is always one of the most popular festival events with a Twilight tour on August 2nd at 5:00 p.m. and a Kitchen tour on August 3rd at 12:00 p.m. Again this year, the committee has assembled a variety of beautiful kitchens with a wide range of decor. One kitchen is from a remodeled 1960s home whose owner "repurposed" wormy chestnut for cabinets. Also, a new craftsmanstyle home will be shown with a lodge feeling featuring an eight-foot kitchen island and whose owners built the entire home around the kitchen plan! Other kitchen designs on these tours range from a Williamsburg-style kitchen to an "Old World" look with leathered granite counter tops. And to highlight concurrent events, “Who’s Afraid of Virginia’s Wolves?” has returned. Follow the wolf trail to view public art sculptures. Thirty-eight adult and pupsized wolves feature the incredibly imaginative work of local artists. These sculptures will be on display in front of local Abingdon businesses throughout the Festival. And of course, while in Abingdon visit Barter Theatre, William King Museum, Historic Whites Mill, the Fields-Penn House and Museum, Parks Mill and the Holston Mountain Artisans. Go to the Festival Website for detailed information on all that will happen over the 16 days: WWW.VAHIGHLANDSFESTIVAL.ORG

Sharing Saves Lives! By: Sloane Trentham When she was a teenager, Sandy Thomas used to sit with her parents and brothers while they donated blood. Her father had a rare disease, and he had to receive blood transfusions often. In fact, she just found his old donor card a few weeks ago. “He had already given a gallon by 1959,” she said, looking at the faded, handwritten card. “Then he gave six more units after that. The last time he donated was in 1965, which was probably one of the times I went with him.” Up until August 21, 2010, which was Race Day in the Tri-Cities, Sandy, like many people, did not really give much thought that she would ever need someone else’s blood. However, on that day while her daughter and grandchildren were visiting, Sandy accidentally tripped and fell over a baby gate and had to be taken to the hospital. Sandy Thomas It turns out she crushed her femur, which is the thigh bone. “I had no idea that I had broken anything,” she said. “It took the emergency squad quite a while to get here. One guy got on the radio and said, ‘We have an elderly woman out in her garage.’ I think that upset me more than anything.” When she got to the hospital, she was told almost immediately that she would need emergency surgery – and a blood transfusion. While she was in and out of consciousness from the strong pain medication she was given, Sandy received five units of blood in a two-day time period. (Approximately 8.4 units equal a gallon of blood.) “I’ve never had anything so painful in my life,” she said. “I have a rod from my hip to my knee.” She was in the hospital five days and said the orthopedic ward at the Johnson City Medical Center was magnificent. She said the surgeon was deeply involved every day and personally changed her dressings. “They just took such great care of me,” she said. Several of her family members have given blood, however she was never able to. The few time she tried, she was denied because she did not weigh enough. But she said she encourages everyone to donate blood. “If we don’t give blood, there won’t be any blood to get,” she said. “And you never know when you might need it.” Although Sandy does not know whose blood was given to her, she believes it saved her life. “Whoever the five people were, I am very grateful,” she said. “You can’t live without blood. It’s the gift of life. I am very appreciative. Very.”

Did you know? 1. There is no substitute for human blood. It can be made only in the human body. 2. Approximately 8.4 units equals a gallon. 3. Anyone between the ages of 17-75 can donate blood. 4. Blood donors can give blood only once every 56 days.

Rock Solid Decorating If you are researching your next landscaping project, you have probably come across the term hardscape at some point in your studies. While this may be a relatively new term, the idea behind it is hardly anything new or revolutionary. In fact, most landscaping is a combination of plants and hardscaping of some sort. Whether you are using decks, stone patios and walkways, or pavers for driveways, most of us have some sort of hardscape landscaping in our lawn and garden area. Hardscaping goes well beyond that, though, in reality. This term can refer to any solid materials you use in landscaping at all. From the borders you use for your boxes to stone paths that line your lawn as well as the rocks and such surrounding a flower garden. Even fences, gates, arbors and gazebos can fall under the title of hardscaping quite accurately. Despite all the years and many advances in technology, concrete remains the most popular choice of material when it comes to hardscaping. There are several reasons that this material is such a popular choice, not the least of which is cost. Beyond costs, however, are the facts that this material is durable and able, in many cases, to stand the tests of time. It is a material that can be sealed in order to prolong its life and beauty, and it is easily formed into many new and amazing shapes. You will find that concrete can be used for many hardscaping projects, both big, small and many sizes in between, with grace and beauty few other materials could match. This is one of the primary reasons for its continued popularity. www.landscapingideasonline.com

Miller’s Tire & Auto Service Homegrown Business! In March of 1987 John and Diana Miller opened the doors for business at 458 West Walnut Street in Johnson City, Tennessee. John is a California native and graduate of Cal-Poly in Ponoma, California. He is also a 25 year veteran of the aerospace industry with a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and has a passion for the automobile. Diana is a native of North Dakota with a master’s degree in education and is also a college professor who later taught for 5 years at ETSU as a professor of special education. With son Johnny Miller, IV attending The University Of Tennessee in Knoxville, John and Diana were looking for a place close to East Tennessee to settle into and call home. The opportunity for a Bridgestone/ Firestone Affiliated Dealership came into play with options in both Kentucky and East Tennessee. After comparing the regions and a visit to the Johnson City area, John and Diana were so impressed with the hospitality of the local population, East Tennessee became their new home. While attending the University of Tennessee and working at the tire and automotive repair shop on the weekends, their son, Johnny had the opportunity to compete in a national collegiate driving competition sponsored by Dodge. The top 80 drivers from 40 campuses across the country met in Daytona, Florida, for the championship run-off. Johnny won the event and collected the prizes and recognition. He later went on to pursue road racing with much success at the professional level with sponsorships from Automation Direct, UPS and Eaton Corporation. Today Johnny works for Eaton Corporation. He holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering and a master’s degree in business. He is currently working on automation systems for vehicle assembly and is on the special advisory team with Eaton dealing with alternative power sources and future power grid systems for hybrid transportation. "The harder I work the luckier I get,” said John. “Twenty-five years later, with hard work and luck, we are still here.We are located near I-26, off of North Roan, at 112 Wesley Street in Johnson City. Our eight man management and service team have more than 110 years combined experience in the automotive industry, plus an average of 8 years with the company. We are your Tri-Cities Bridgestone/ Firestone Affiliated Dealer. With ASE Certified Technicians, we offer factory scheduled maintenance services to maintain your vehicle warranty. We repair most all vehicle makes and models, and, of course, tires. The next time you have a vehicle need, give us a try. We'll give you our best.” Just as day one, when John and Diana opened the doors with faith and on a prayer, the service team at Miller’s Tire is dedicated to professional level results and customer satisfaction. “Thank you, to all who have trusted in us for your service, repair and tire needs over the past 25 years,” said John. Helping to Achieve your Financial Goals By: Sloane Trentham Craig Torbett of Klem, Gentry and Torbett at Ameriprise Financial in Johnson City is one of the few Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA) in the region. And he stated that he fell into that role by accident. “During one particular divorce case, I was asked by this woman’s attorney to testify as an expert witness in the case,” said Craig. “We realized our firm required some additional training for that, and that was when I realized there was no one around who had this designation and that it was probably an underserved area.” The client’s case was so involved that Craig was able to get the certification, which is a two-step process and takes 18 months to acquire, before he testified. “It has become much more of a growing part of our business than I originally thought,” he said. How can a CDFA help? A CDFA can help guide a client going through a divorce in the right direction financially to benefit the most and plan for the future. CDFAs help identify short and long term effects of dividing property, plan for certain tax issues, examine pension and retirement plans, and analyze insurance needs, among much more. Because lawyers are not often financial experts, CDFAs can also help their clients’ attorneys with many of the financial questions with which they struggle. “It is still a relatively small part of our practice, but having my partners to help cover all the other bases allows me to give special attention to these kinds of cases,” he said. “They are more in-depth, more time consuming and require a deeper understanding. It is probably the most requested area where people seek out the advice based on the need versus coming to us through referral.” Craig, like his partners, comes from an investing background. He also holds

a designation as a certified financial planner (CFP) which is a prerequisite to becoming a CDFA. His specialties are in estate planning and, of course, divorce. Craig was also one of the two advisors in the state of Tennessee to be named one of the country’s top 150 advisors for physicians, recognized each year in the publication Medical Economics. He is a Johnson City native and has been working for Ameriprise for 13 years. “One of the things that is unique about Ameriprise is that it gives us as the advisor the opportunity to direct how we work within the company,” he said. When Craig first began working for Ameriprise Financial, it was still a part of American Express, and he was working under a corporate owned site. “It was a great way to get started in the company, but it limits you to some degree as well,” he said. “I did not actually own my own client base and therefore was building no equity in my business.” The other option was to work as an independent franchise, which is what Craig decided to work toward and achieved. “It’s nice to have that large corporate backing for support, but yet we truly own our own business,” said Craig. “We are a self-employed small business. The three of us run our practice as Klem, Gentry and Torbett, and that gives us both freedoms and extra responsibilities.” To speak with Calvin Klem, Charles Gentry or Craig Torbett, or to inquire about their other services, please free to call 423-283-9660. 15th Annual Mid-Atlantic

Garden Faire On April 20th, 21st and 22nd, the Washington County Master Gardeners at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center located in historic Abingdon, Virginia, greeted many to unearth a wealth of gardening delights. From the occasional to the serious gardener, all enjoyed the wide selection of products and creative gardening ideas. This year’s theme “A Passion for Gardening” rekindled gardeners’ desires to lure beautiful creations from the earth. The Garden Marketplace overflowed with everything under the sun for the passionate gardener. Vendors from across the Southeast displayed exotic and unusual flowers and native and heirloom plants, shrubs and trees. Unique tools, outdoor furniture, ornamental iron, floral and potting supplies and much more made this year’s event a success! Thank you to all in making it fun, informative and an alluring marketplace. (Staff Photos By Shirley Bower)

All About Daylilies Daylilies are beautiful, tough and great multi-taskers. They spread naturally, choke out weeds, control erosion and make an excellent ground cover. And they look great while doing it! True to their Greek name for "beauty" and "day," the blooms of Hemerocallis only last for one day. We know them better as daylilies. Don't worry about the short-lived blossoms. Luckily, today's blooms are replaced by new ones tomorrow. The normal blooming season is several weeks. By planting several varieties, you can have a multitude of blooms from spring into fall. Even when they're not in bloom, the graceful, grass-like foliage is appealing on its own. Daylilies have been a part of the American landscape for many years. When the first colonists arrived, they brought with them the familiar yellow and orange varieties we still see today. Those original plants have been cultivated into more than ten-thousand varieties with blooms in practically every color imaginable. The height and size of the blooms also vary from foot-tall dwarfs to four-foot hybrids. Blooms range from three to eight inches across, and the petals may be ruffled or smooth. The foliage turns yellow and dies as cold weather arrives or can stay green all year in warmer climates. Source: www.lowes.com

May - Healthy Vision Month Imagine for a moment that you lost your ability to see—not all at once, but gradually. Americans agree that eyesight has a huge impact on their day-to-day lives and is one of the senses they fear losing most. However, people often do not pay attention to their vision unless they notice a problem. Many eye diseases and conditions have no early warning signs, so a person can have a potentially blinding eye disease and not even know it. One of the most important things you can do to protect your vision is to get a comprehensive dilated eye exam. In this procedure, an eye care professional places drops in your eyes to dilate, or widen, the pupil to allow more light to enter the eye the same way an open door lets more light into a room. This allows your eye care professional to examine the back of the eyes for any signs of eye disease. Early detection and treatment can help to reduce your risk of vision loss and blindness. Simple Steps to keep your vision at its best:

• Make healthy food choices—A variety of vegetables, especially dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale or collard greens, should be an important part of your diet. Researchers have found that people with diets that contain higher levels of vitamins C and E, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids (found in salmon, tuna and halibut) are less likely to develop AMD. • Quit smoking or never start—Tobacco smoking has been linked to an increased risk of AMD, cataract and optic nerve damage, all of which can lead to vision loss. • Wear sunglasses—Sunglasses can help to protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays. When purchasing sunglasses, look for ones that block out 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation. For more information for eye care, visit www.nei.nih.gov/healthyeyes.

• Talk to your family members about their eye health history as many eye diseases and conditions are hereditary.

You'll see clearly why we're the best!

They represented 12.9% of the U.S. population, about one in every eight Americans. By 2030, there will be about 72.1 million older persons, more than twice their number in 2000. Southern Belles SHOOTING SOCIETY By: Lorelei Goff

Ginger Crawford was an unlikely candidate to start a women’s shooting club. The soft-spoken, “40-ish” bookkeeper had never fired a gun and says, “I had no interest!” What compelled the petite blond to found a “women only” shooting club? “The schools had a snow day and I was off work with a broken leg,” explains Crawford. “My daughter went out to get something from the car.” Crawford watched from a window as a car came slowly down the road with two men inside. “There was no need for them to be going slow because there wasn’t any significant snow on our road. They were almost at a standstill and they

were looking at Augusta,” Crawford says, her eyes flashing with anger. “After she came back in, the doorbell rang. I cracked the door open. The guy looked totally shocked that a woman answered.” After stammering out an unlikely story of shoveling snow, he asked her if she wanted her driveway cleared. Crawford realized that she had no way to protect herself or her daughter if he forced his way in. “Just a minute. I’ll check,” she said, shouting for her husband as if he were home in another room. “He said no,” she told the man and slammed the door. The vehicle left, but the fear of what could have happened remained. Crawford bought a gun and wondered if she could pull the trigger. “I knew I needed to get my confidence up, build my skills.” Unable to find any resources in the area for women shooters, Crawford founded the Southern Belles Shooting Society. “We’re just normal women from all walks of life. Some of us are soccer moms. My daughter’s a student. We have a grandmother,” says Crawford, who believes the “women only” environment is a key factor in the popularity and growth of the group. Although the Belles have fun, it’s all business on the range, and Crawford is clear that she has a mission to empower women. Even the logo she chose for the group has a message. She explains, “The little rose that’s lying off to the side is important. I believe every woman has lost something in her life. I’ve had women say, ‘Put the rose on the handle of the gun.’ I tell them, ‘No, it is dropped on the wood for a reason. It represents something we’ve lost that we need to go back and recover.’ “By the way,” Crawford adds with a playful twinkle in her eye, “The gun on our logo is the gun that Scarlet O’Hara shot the Yankee soldier in Gone with the Wind. She pauses and adds with a wink, “We’re Southern Belles.” The Southern Belles Shooting Society meets twice a month for practice and training. Crawford can be contacted at southernbellesshootingsociety@hotmail.com. Lorelei Goff is a freelance writer living in Greene County. She can be contacted at l.goff.freelance@gmail.com.
