The time has come – pull out those blankets and light up those fireplaces. Fall is here! Some years ago, someone told me that this was a sad time of the year with all the flowers dying and leaves falling to the ground. Attitude – it can serve as our friend or our enemy. It can lift us up or carry us down. Sometimes challenging - we have a choice. I asked that person if they saw their glass as being half full or half empty. With a short a pause, the person replied, “It just depends on whether I like what’s in my glass…” We hope all of you ‘like’ what you see in Voice Magazine. The next couple of months will be very busy for us with the planning of new activities and scheduling for 2011. Please join us for our events and keep watch for more details about the exciting news of ‘more to come’ in 2011. We invite businesses to take advantage of our ‘holiday’ advertising specials, and promote their services and products in our holiday issues. By Dan Johnson
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. (Romans 8:26) My father taught me two important lessons about the human condition. First, he taught me to be kind to others on the journey because everyone is fighting a battle. Second, he reminded me that every human being has a structural weakness. Some of us struggle with greed, others fear. One person battles lust and another pride. We each have an Achilles heel and we keep it carefully hidden beneath a veneer of self-sufficiency and success. Survival of the fittest teaches us to exploit the weaknesses of others; Jesus teaches us to bind the wounds of others, not revel in discovering them. F.B. Meyer, a Baptist evangelist and pastor from England, once said that when we see a Christian in sin, there are two things we do not know. First, we do not know how hard he or she tried not to sin. Second, we do not know the power of the forces that attacked him or her. And who knows what we would have done in the same situation. To keep from feeling shame, we are often tempted to be more aware of the faults of others than the glaring weaknesses others probably already see in our lives. Jesus asked, "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” (Matthew 7:3) There is no doubt that structural weaknesses need to be dealt with. In the material world, faulty engineering can prove fatal. In the spiritual world, unchallenged character flaws can be equally catastrophic. The goal is for each of us to be healing agents who instinctively bind up the wounded, encourage those who are beaten down, and restore those who have fallen. Jesus Christ referred to His enemy, Satan, as “the Accuser.” In our haste to defend ourselves and our doctrines, let’s be quick to realize that each person we meet is trying to make a go of their lives. Playing judge and jury forces us into a self-righteousness that human beings weren’t made to possess. Instead, we have the opportunity today to be the Encourager. When we see someone struggling, we can join our prayers with the very prayers of God for His troubled saints. The great benefit to living this way is that others will repay the favor with mercy and so will God. Who can you encourage today?

Celebrate Halloween with Fun Family Activities
With little witches, warlocks and ghosts galore, the spookiest day of the year is just around the corner. Here are a few ideas likely to make your next Halloween celebration a real scream: • Save the seeds from your pumpkin carvings and turn them into a healthy Halloween snack. First, let clean seeds dry on a paper towel for 10 minutes. Next, spray a muffin pan with butter-flavored, nonstick cooking spray, placing seeds in the cups and turning them to coat lightly. For a flavorful touch, let kids sprinkle on cinnamon and sugar, garlic salt or popcorn seasoning. Finally, bake in a preheated oven at 350º F, turning once, for 10 to 20 minutes or until brown and slightly crisp. • Prepare a Bone-Chillin’ Brew. Quench everyone’s thirst with an easy-tomake punch concoction that’s sure to keep the party alive. Start with Punch flavor NESTLÉ® JUICY JUICE®. Mix it with frozen lemonade concentrate and lemon-lime soda and refrigerate. Next, pour water into plastic gloves and fasten with rubber bands or twist ties. Then line a baking sheet with paper towels and place filled gloves on paper towels. Freeze for three hours or until firm. Once the “hands” are frozen, cut gloves off and let the hands float in the punch.
Spiderweb Munch (Makes 12-16 servings) 2 cups (12-ounce package) NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels 1 cup creamy peanut butter, divided 1/3 cup powdered sugar 3 cups toasted rice cereal
HEAT morsels and ¾ cup peanut butter in small, heavy-duty saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly until smooth; remove from heat. Add sugar; stir vigorously until smooth. PLACE cereal in large bowl. Add 1 cup melted chocolate mixture; stir until evenly coated. Place on ungreased baking sheet. Using small metal spatula, shape into 10-inch circle with slightly raised 1-inchwide border. Pour remaining chocolate mixture in center of circle; spread to border.
For Spiderweb:
PLACE remaining peanut butter in small, heavy-duty plastic bag. Cut tiny corner from bag; squeeze to pipe concentric circles on top of chocolate. Using wooden pick or tip of sharp knife, pull tip through peanut butter from center to border. Refrigerate for 30 minutes or until firm. Cut into wedges. this season! Provided by Fashion Flora
Fall fashion this season is all about the waistline. If you have that perfect hourglass figure, wide belts, narrow belts, clinch belts, and tucked in tops all accentuate your already defined waistline. But if you are like the average gal, size 14 to 16, you may be thinking – my waistline? But yes – your waistline! Define your midsection with color contrasts, waistline details, fabrics that glide over your frame, or a great belt. Don’t be afraid to show off those sexy curves. Both thin and thick belts both work to define your shape when cinched at your midriff over jackets, dresses or blouses. For strongest impact, sharper color contrasts between tops and bottoms work better than muted color combos. Just know you body type and let it work for you. Here are a few tips for us all gals: SASHES -- These scarf-like belts are worn loosely at or slightly above the hips. They look great with a long shirt or dress. However, women with "pear-shaped" bodies should avoid this style of belt as it will add more bulk to your mid-section and hips. THIN LEATHER BELTS -- For the most part, this style looks great with jeans or other pants that have belt loops. However, if you tend to have a smaller waist, but larger hips, make sure that your pants fit well before trying to hold them up with a belt. Leather belts, or similar thinner styles, will tend to pull on the back loops and cut into your back and hips if the pants aren't the right size. WIDE BUCKLE BELTS -- These refer to leather belts (or any material really) that are at least two to three inches wide and have a decorative buckle. These look good sitting right above the hips as the buckle will draw the attention away from the hip area. CINCH BELTS -- Again, not for every plus size woman, this style of belt has either a hook and eye or velcro closure in the back or front. They range from three inches wide to about eight inches.
The thicker belts are also known as corset belts as they are worn like that style of lingerie. They can be made from leather (or it's equivalent) or elastic. Women with small stomach and hip areas would best benefit from these belts. CHAIN BELTS -- Add a bit of glimmer and flare to a pair of jeans or a long tunic. This style will fit well on almost any body type as the design will draw attention away from your problem areas. Many of these belts come with extensions so they can fit any plus size lady. TIE BELTS -- These are made from leather ties and some sort of embellishment such as shells, coins or discs. They tie in the front and can be worn with or without belt loops. One ‘must have’ in every woman’ s wardrobe is a shapewear. It is definitely a lifesaver when you need to pull in the extra flab to smoothly fit in a dress, slacks, or jeans. From waist cinchers to thigh, torso and hip-hugging that instantly take inches off your frame; shapewear is a ‘must have’ for that perfect look and waist definition. http://plussize.lovetoknow.com

Cool Weather Trend: Tights After several seasons as a fashion staple, tights remain a must-have accessory and an easy way to update any wardrobe. Paired with like colors for a sleek, monochromatic look or contrasting colors for a bold statement, tights have been seen on the runway and the streets under skirts, dresses, shorts and cutoff jeans. Among a fashion forecast that includes nude fishnets and patterned tights, many of this season’s looks are suitably sheer. Designers are showing sophisticated sheer tights that provide the perfect balance between sheer and opaque for effortless style from autumn, to winter, to spring.
Sheer tights are certain to become a favorite among fashionistas for their ability to easily transition between seasons. This fall, Hanes introduced Hanes Silk Reflections Sheer Tights, a new innovation in tights that results in luxuriously soft, beautiful legs year-round; a perfect solution for seasonless dressing. The tights feature a control-top panty for smoother curves and added confidence. These fashion-forward tights are available in black, gentlebrown, granite, nude and plum. Did you know? Generally speaking, clothing which was produced before the 1920s is referred to as antique clothing and clothing from the 1920s to 1980s is considered vintage. Retro, short for retrospective, usually refers to clothing that imitates the style of a previous era. Clothing produced more recently is usually called modern or contemporary fashion. Q A
Recently, my best friend lied about something. How should I handle this?
First, did she lie to you or did someone else tell you that she lied? Be sure of the facts... true or untrue. Lies come in all sizes, shapes, forms and colors. The ʻlittleʼ whites lie can be as hurtful as the ʻbigʼ dark untrue stories. But – you need to discuss it with her. You do not have to be aggressive, just
assertive. Let her know that you know, and discuss it openly. Express your feelings. However, if her lying is a pattern, it could be a red flag for deeper problems for her. True friendship is built on open trust. Sincerely, Viola Voice Ask Viola Voice! Do you have a question? Send your question to: Dearviola@voicemagazineforwomen.com. BRISTOL, TN/VA: SHOP LOCALLY Paramount Center for the Arts and Bristol Chamber to present Veterans Day program The Paramount Center for the Arts and the Bristol Chamber of Commerce take great pride in a tradition of providing excellence in programming which benefits the regional community. The two organizations have partnered to present a very special Veterans Day program at the Paramount on November 11th, which will especially pay tribute to female veterans before presenting nationally renowned humorist, Jeanne Robertson, in performance at 7:00 PM. The doors open at 6:00 PM with Mighty WurliTzer organ music and a holiday fashion preview. A meet-and-greet reception will be held in the Paramount lobby following the show. And, of course, men are welcomed to come and enjoy the evening as well! In her positively hilarious style, the 6’2” Jeanne Robertson is heard daily on Sirus/XM Radio’s Family Comedy Channel, and has been the recipient of every top honor in the speaking profession. She was named Miss Congeniality in the Miss America Pageant (she doesn’t say what year!), is the past president of the National Speakers Association, and was the first woman to receive the NSA’s Cavett Award. A member of the Speakers Hall of Fame, Jeanne was also honored by Toastmasters International when it named her the recipient of the Golden Gavel Award, presented annually to one individual who has demonstrated outstanding skills in communication and leadership. You may have seen this Speaker’s Hall of Fame inductee being interviewed on CBS’s “60 Minutes” by correspondent Morley Safer…or seen one of her speeches on public television…or heard her on family comedy channel…or read one of her three books on humor…or seen one of the six humorous DVD’s she’s released in the past eleven years. But, only when you hear her in person at Bristol’s Paramount will you appreciate why audiences across the nation proclaim, “the meeting ain’t over ‘till the tall lady speaks!” And this tall lady is thrilled to have an opportunity to recognize our women in service to our country on this special evening! The event is proudly sponsored by Voice Magazine for Women, WJHL 11Connects, and BVUB. Tickets are $22.50 reserved, and may be charged by phoning the Paramount Box Office at 423-274-8920 or on-line from www.ETIX.com. There is a special rate for veteran’s reservations which must be made through the box office.

Curvacious Consignment Offering high-end, designer clothing Ms. Angela Brady, owner of Curvacious Consignment, grew up in Southeast Virginia. She doesn’t remember a time when she wasn’t interested in fashion. “Growing up in a large family and having a sister, we all exchanged clothes from the ‘hand-me-downs’ to ‘hand-me-ups.’ We exchanged among sisters, cousins, at least one special aunt, and mother.” “It wasn’t in our family genes to be less than a size 12, so it wasn’t easy to find the clothing we wanted or had seen in fashion magazines,” Angie added laughingly. At a very young age, Angie taught herself to pull together a wardrobe and accessorize with a small number of garments. Having shopped in some thrift stores, she had the gem of an idea of having her own up-scale consignment shop even before she visited one. After leaving Southeast Virginia, working for several large companies and advancing in her career in marketing and advertising, Angie never lost sight of her dream of opening a high-end consignment store – one that would cater to women size 12 and larger. “I collected timeless designer clothes and vintage pieces because I knew that I would eventually open an upscale ladies’ consignment shop.” Angie’s dream finally came to fruition in March 2008, when she rented a storefront at 4411 N. Roan Street - Curvacious Consignment was born! “Curvacious Consignment grew so quickly that it expanded from 600 square feet to 1300 square feet in only five months. The women in the Tri-Cities weren’t about to let this little shop just grow slowly! It’s the area’s first plus-size consignment shop, and the need for one helped the business grow faster than my wildest expectations. Every single day, women stop by

JONESBOROUGH, TENNESSEE: SHOP LOCALLY Jonesborough Storytelling Festival to be held October 1-3
Make plans now to attend the 2010 National Storytelling Festival October 1-3, 2010 in Jonesborough, Tennessee. Located in the natural beauty of Northeast Tennessee in the Southern Appalachian Mountains, Historic Jonesborough has played host to the National Storytelling Festival for over three decades. Called “the leading event of its kind in America” by USA Today, the award-winning festival takes place the first full weekend of every October. The National Storytelling Festival began in 1973 when 60 people gathered around an old farm wagon in Courthouse Square to hear a few Appalachian tales. During the decades since, that tiny audience has grown to 10,000 listeners, and the hay wagon has been replaced by
large, circus-like tents spread throughout the town where world-renowned tellers spin their tales in this storybook setting. Produced by Jonesborough’s International Storytelling Center, the National Storytelling Festival represents three days of exciting storytelling performances that reflect a wealth of cultures, traditions, and styles - a world of stories in one small, historic Artisan town. Brazilian Blowout leaves hair the smoothest Rocking steady in the same location for 23 years, RESULTS SALON & DAY SPA, an Aveda Concept Salon in Colonial Heights – Kingsport has introduced the Brazilian Blowout, a service that reduces bulk and styling time, delivers smooth shiny hair, and eliminates the daily damage hot tools cause. The Brazilian Blowout (or BBO) is the most innovative and effective professional smoothing treatment in the world. Results stylist Lisa Bettini explains, “The Brazilian Blowout is a protein and smoothing treatment that should not be confused with relaxers or straighteners. While those products do straighten hair it isn’t without sacrifice. The integrity of the hair is compromised because body is lost and that ultimately leads to profuse and sometimes permanent damage.” The Brazilian Blowout solution is formaldehyde-free and there is no down time. You’re free to wash and dry your hair as soon as you want. The change is dramatic and lasts up to 12 weeks. Hair can even be colored at the same appointment. Lisa says, “People with big or coarse, kinky or ethnic, wavy or curly locks are perfect candidates for the BBO. I describe it as designing your hair to liams ddie Wil fall north and south which is more desirable than spreading east and Dr. Fre Before west.” Results Salon is a registered Certified Salon of the Brazilian Blowout. Alternatively, “curly girls” like AnnaLynne McCord, and Sarah Jessica Parker,
who want to love their curls can get advice on cuts and proper use of products from Bettini. “I have very curly hair that I’ve come to embrace but it’s taken years. I consult with my curly hair clients and give recommendations that don’t cost anything. Like use a large cotton T-shirt around a wet head instead of a bath towel. Think of the most expensive piece of clothing you own. You are not going to throw it in the washer with a scoop of detergent. You’ll take it to the best dry cleaner. The most valuable garment you own is your hair because you wear it everyday.”

Save MONEY and ENERGY in the Winter Months By Crystal Robertson, UT Extension Agent
The months are getting colder. Is your home prepared for the chill, or are you throwing money out the window – literally? It only takes a minute to look around your house for wasted energy. Little things do add up, and when it comes to saving electricity, they might well add up to extra money in your pocket.
Crystal Robertson
• Start by setting your thermostat to 68˚ in the winter months. Your heating costs rise 3% for every degree above 68˚, so just four degrees warmer will increase your bill by 12%.
• Next, make sure your vents and return grills have adequate space to generate airflow. They need to be open. • Also, be sure to replace your air filter monthly. Make it a habit by changing out the filter when you get your electric bill each month. This is important not only to heat your home more efficiently, but for the life of the heating and cooling system. • Keep cool air from seeping inside your home by checking for air leakage. About one-third of the air leaks are found through openings in your ceilings, walls, and floors. Some common spots to look are around your plumbing, chimney, attic access hatches, electrical outlets and switches, door frames, and windows. Inspect the exterior for leakage where utilities penetrate the structure and look for any cracks in the foundation. Do not seal air exhausts or intake vents needed for equipment and appliances. • Switch and outlet sealers are a great way to insulate. Believe it or not, those tiny holes let cold air into your home. Simply remove the outlet covers, insert the specially designed insulation pads underneath, and replace the cover. • Fireplaces are another culprit for cool air leakage. Replace your fireplace screen with glass doors as they are safer and reduce the heat that escapes. Consider saving your fireplace for special occasions – it might be pretty, but it sends your heated air right up the chimney. After use and the fire is completely extinguished, don’t forget to close the damper. October 1 marks a 6.4% rate hike for TVA residential customers, the largest cost adjustment since August 2007. We can combat these higher electric bills by being more energy efficient. Find out how you can do more by visiting www.energyright.com/savingenergy and take the interactive Home e-Valuation survey.

Positive Planning
Fall Forward
by Brandi Woodall, Positive Approach Events & Consulting
The warm days and cool crisp nights of autumn, the smell of baked apples, and of course the annual display of art that nature gives us when the leaves begin to turn colors is back! I love fall, it is without a doubt my favorite time of year. This is the season I look forward to hosting family and friends in our home for gatherings. Do you have guests coming and you’re stumped on what Brandi Woodall to serve for dinner? Then head to the farmer’s market to get inspired by this year’s harvest. This is a great time of year to shop for vegetables and fruits that you’ll only find in season now. Not only will you be able to buy fresh and local, you’ll also save money because you’ll be buying direct from the farmer. No autumn table is complete without apples! Have unexpected company and you’re thinking coffee and dessert but you have no pastries or cakes on-hand? No problem, just slice up some apples, sauté them in a pan with a little butter, a few sprinkles of cinnamon and sugar and serve over ice cream or prepare some quick oats (oatmeal) and you just created an apple crisp! Decorating around the house is a lot less stressful this year as well. Keep it cozy by collecting a few inexpensive fleece blankets, baskets, light scented candles, (my favorite right now is holiday spice) and voila! instant ambiance. Over the top home décor isn’t a necessity during fall, it’s all about comfort. Are you an on-the-go gal much like myself? Well, make sure you’re prepared because with fall comes unpredictable weather. Create an emergency kit for the car; include things like an umbrella, blanket, jacket and even hair items like ponytail holders or brushes. Always be prepared for the elements (of surprise)! If you’re considering an event, we offer complete event planning services...from concept to cleanup, we’ll handle the work and you relax with the family! Call Brandi Woodall at (423)946-2693 for your consultation! www.positiveapproachevents.com, www.venuejc.com.

Mona Lisa’s Gelato Cool treat without the guilt
Curried Roasted Vegetables with Goat Cheese A wonderful combo – the sweet potatoes and the baby eggplant. Suggested serving with a fruity Chardonnay or Chenin Blanc. A light vegetarian meal can finish with a more substantial dessert. Maybe the right time to satisfy a craving for warm Dutch apple pie à la Mode. Ingredients: 2-½ tablespoons canola oil 3 medium onions, thinly sliced 1-tablespoon sugar 8 ounces plain yogurt or low-fat plain yogurt 1-¼ teaspoons Madras curry powder Salt & fresh ground black pepper ½ cup white wine 3 baby eggplants, sliced ½ inch thick salted & drained on paper towels 3 medium – small sweet potatoes (1lb) sliced ¼ inch thick 3 ounces soft chevre (goat cheese) crumbled Heat oil in a medium skillet or sauté pan. Add onions and sugar to the pan Sauté onion about 15 minutes over medium heat, stirring frequently until soft and light golden.
In a small bowl combine yogurt, curry, salt, pepper and wine. Blend well: add to onions. Rinse salt off eggplant slices & pat dry with paper toweling. In a greased 1 ½ quart casserole dish, layer 1/3 of the slices of the sweet potatoes and eggplant, topping the layer with ¼ onion mixture; repeat this 3 times. Top with onion mixture. Cover and bake in preheated 350 degrees over for about 45 minutes. Add the crumbled chevre and bake another 15 minutes. Serve immediately, spooning any remaining sauce over each serving. Preparation time: about 25 minutes. Makes 4 servings.
What treat is smooth, tasty, decadent and guilt free? Gelato! All under one roof, Johnson City’s newest shop for frozen treats is Mona Lisa’s Gelato, located at 305 W. Oakland Ave. in Johnson City, TN. After vacationing in Italy last year, owners Steve and Sheridan Nice found a tasty Italian dessert that they wanted to bring home with them and offer to others. “It’s different from ice cream,” Steve Nice said. “Traditional ice cream is composed of 50 percent air and has an average of 15 percent butterfat. Gelato has only 25 percent air and an average of 7 percent butterfat. So it’s more dense and it’s much creamier. Gelato typically has one-third less calories than ice cream.” Steve and Sheridan make their gelato from all-natural flavors with an assortment of fresh fruit and nuts. “The product does not contain preservatives and we make it made fresh. And we do use the imported gelato-making machines from Italy.” “My background is in food, and I went to cooking school in France,” stated Sheridan, who previously ran the Epicurean Restaurant in Johnson City. “Basically, I’ve just returned to what I love, and I’m back in the business.” Sheridan uses her cooking intuitiveness and training in creating new recipes for the gelato and gourmet cupcakes sold at Mona Lisa’s. “My gelato flavors include tiramisu, white chocolate amarena cherry, strawberry, pistachio, birthday cake and spumoni.” “We came back (from Italy) and thought this would be a wonderful business to be in and something that would be unique for Johnson City,” said Steve. “And certainly it’s something that we love, and we’re finding out that a lot of other people love it, too... They come in happy and they leave happier.” Beginning in October, Mona Lisa’s Gelato will expand their business and menu to include breakfast and lunch. “We will offer scratch made pastries and coffee at 7:00 in the morning, and for lunch, we will offer homemade soups and paninis.” Conveniently located behind the Mellow Mushroom in Johnson City, Mona Lisa’s Gelato offers every day serving of tasty treats and delicious food. Hours: Mon – Sat 11:00 am - 8:00 pm and Sunday, 12:00 pm - 8:00 pm. (Article provided in part by Mona Lisa’s Gelato)

Protect Yourself from Breast Cancer If you see pink everywhere you turn this month, here's why: October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time when survivors, advocates, and health organizations strive to raise awareness of the progress we're making together in fighting this disease – and the things women can do to protect themselves.
Did you know? October is National Dental Hygiene Month? Reducing the risk of oral disease such as periodontal disease is the goal of the campaign. Brushing teeth for two minutes (time it) at least twice each day can reduce plaque build-up and the risk of cavities. Flossing is needed to clean between your teeth and to remove particles of food from under the gum line. Rinsing with an anti-microbial mouth rinse clears out even more harmful bacteria.
Caring Choice Home Health Services, LLC
Since 1990, more and more women have been surviving breast cancer, largely because of early detection through mammography and improvements in treatment. However, breast cancer is still the second leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer.
Mammograms can find breast cancers earlier, when they are easier to treat and the chances of survival are higher. That's why the American Cancer Society recommends yearly mammograms and breast exams for women 40 and older. If you're putting off getting your mammogram because you're scared or nervous, watch some real women talk about their experience. You'll see this life-saving test is nothing to be afraid of.

And don’t forget that in addition to getting a yearly mammogram, there are steps women can take to reduce their risk of breast cancer:
.net • Eat a healthy diet to help control weight, since being overweight or obese may raise breast cancer risk.
Current Specials Include:
• Get regular physical activity. The American Cancer Society recommends 30 minutes a day, 5 or more days a week. Forty-five to 60 minutes a day is even better for reducing breast cancer risk.
1 hour facial and 1 hour massage for $100! Facial and foot massage for $80!
• Limit the amount of alcohol you drink to no more than 1 drink per day. Alcohol is clearly linked to an increased risk of developing breast cancer. And perhaps most important, be sure to talk to your doctor if you notice any changes in your breasts or have any other concerns. That conversation could save your life. www.cancer.org

On Saturday, November 13th, 2010 YWCA Bristol will host their 30th Anniversary Women’s Turkey Trot and Gobbler’s Gait 5K. This is Bristol’s only all-women’s road race and has been a beloved event every fall since 1980. The long-standing tradition is reinvigorated this year with a new race route! Appropriately, the new course will cross over Anderson Street Bridge beside the YWCA’s previous site in Bristol. Perhaps some of the ladies who have “trotted” for years will feel the link between past and present as they cross over. The run will begin at 8:00 am; the walk will start at 8:15 a.m. at the YWCA on 106 State Street. Registration forms can be picked up at YWCA Bristol or downloaded at www.ywcabristol.org. Pre-registration cost is $15 and $25 on race day. Tee-shirts are guaranteed for the first two hundred registrants. Awards will be given to winners in several categories including mother/daughter teams. A light brunch will be served after the race and many door prizes will be given away. Participating women are also invited to enjoy the whirlpool, sauna, and steam room in the YW’s all-women’s Fitness Spa after the race. YWCA Bristol is very grateful to the sponsors who make this event possible: Allen Chiropractic Care, Inc., Charlie Sams, Highlands Community Services, KS Promotional Products, Magic of Massage Spa, Med Trim Rx, Premier Printing, PowerTalk WPWT, Voice Magazine for Women, and Wellness Way Chiropractic. For more information about the YWCA 2010 Turkey Trot/Gobbler’s Gait, please call 423.968.9444. Come join the fun!

Great Gift Ideas
Watch Voice Magazine’s monthly segment on Daytime Tri-Cities!
This holiday season, many of us will be invited to dinner or gatherings. Some may even be staying overnight at a friend or family member’s home. A great way to show your appreciation for the work is to bring a gift for the hostess. So, when is a gift for the host appropriate and what makes a perfect hostess gift?
When should I bring a host or hostess gift? Cocktail party Host and hostess gifts are completely optional for cocktail parties. But if you were in a generous mood, a bottle of wine or a batch of blueberry muffins for the next morning—or, for the holidays, something seasonal, like an ornament—would be thoughtful. Be sure to enclose a gift card so the host won’t wonder whose thought it was that counts. Dinner party Yes, bring a gift, but keep it simple and under $25. Anything that distracts the host may be a nuisance. A bottle of wine, a small potted plant, a flower arrangement already in a vase, candles, or soaps are better bets. Present the gift to your host when you arrive, or leave it on an entryway table if your host isn’t there to greet you. Casual get together such as brunch A gift is optional. You may choose instead to bring something to the meal—a side dish, dessert or drink. But ask: just showing up with a tray of danishes puts the host on the spot. Overnight stay A gift is mandatory. You can present the gift upon your arrival, during your stay, or after your exit. Consider giving your hosts something you note in the course of your visit that would be right for them, like a tray that goes with their color scheme. The longer the stay, the more expensive or elaborate the gift. For example, for a weekend stay, you may decide to send flowers. If you’ve stayed for three nights or more, a gift certificate to the host’s favorite spa or restaurant would be a good bet.
Host and hostess gifts: Wine with a twist: Add an embroidered kitchen towel or a dainty linen dishcloth around the wine bottle, or attach cute cocktail or personalized napkins with a dainty holiday ribbon. Or add a quirky wine topper with a holiday bow. Instead of wine, why not give two martini glasses with a fun new recipe and a bottle of liquor that the recipe calls for. (Or a set of shot glasses) An assortment of nuts: You can mix and make a ‘nutty’ assortment yourself or purchase an assortment. Place them in a holiday tin, or in an inexpensive dish. Coffees: Many times as the evening wears down, coffee is served and your hostess will appreciate gourmet coffees. (or teas) Candies for the sweet: Purchase candies from a retro or hard to find nostalgic store. These candies make great gifts. Chocolates: You really can’t go wrong with chocolate and one of my favorite places to purchase fine chocolates is Earth & Sky Confections in Jonesborough, TN. Cheese please: Cheese baskets are perfect gifts for any hostess. Have a variety of tasty cheeses and crackers and add a personalized card. Dishpan Hands: For the hostess with the mostess, provide her with Hostess Dishwashing Gloves. Cute and affordable. (www.findgift.com) For the fireplace: If your hostess has a fireplace she'll love incense logs you make yourself. They're so easy! Just take empty paper towel rolls and fill them with dry potpourri. Wrap them in Christmas wrapping paper (no foil) and tie the ends with ribbon. The logs will look like giant pieces of candy, but when you throw them in the fireplace, they let out a scent that fills the room. Make your own dry potpourri by gathering tiny pine cones, leaves and other dry goods and scenting them yourself. Sprinkle cinnamon on the dry mix or soak the dry goods in lemon or vanilla water, allow to dry on paper towels, then insert into the cardboard tube. Stack the "logs" in a pyramid shape, tie with a ribbon, then present it to the hostess. You can also stack the logs in a nice wicker basket and add a bow. The page was spotless Before I touched my pen down, Pure, snow-white clean, Waiting for the mark of a thoughtprint. Like a field of snow waits for footprints of life: Beautiful alone, untouched yet longing to be enhanced By a single rabbit's random hopping Lor by child prints beside a father's boots. Waiting to be enhanced or else scarred By spinning tires slinging mud Or by the awesome tramp of soldiers And their blood. I touch my pen down Briefly as a single random musing Or as a though child, Begotten by the works of masters. Let not my pen mar the expectant beauty Of the virgin page. May no corruption find its way past the doorways Of my mind. Give me thoughtprints Worthy of the waiting page.

Jonesborough, TN Make plans now to attend the 2010 National Storytelling Festival October 1-3, 2010 in Jonesborough, Tennessee. Produced by Jonesborough’s International Storytelling Center, the National Storytelling Festival represents three days of exciting storytelling performances that reflect a wealth of cultures, traditions, and styles - a world of stories in one small, historic town. For more information, visit www.storytellingcenter.net or call (423) 913-1276 or (800) 952-8392. The 2nd annual Fine Art in the Park will take place on October 23 and 24, 2010 from 10am-5pm each day. It will again be held on the grounds and inside of the prestigious International Storytelling Center in the heart of Jonesborough, Tennessee. As this is both a juried and judged art show, the goal of this show is to focus on truly fine art. In keeping this a fine art only event, there will be no food vendors or other festival-type offerings at this show. Rather, an attempt will be made to offer a venue for juried artists to showcase their artwork. Our public relations efforts will focus on drawing in a public who will attend this event for the purpose of viewing and purchasing artwork. This well balanced show will be to highlight categories of artwork such as: paintings, woodworking, pottery, textiles and jewelry. In addition to our juried artists we will again offer local "tastings". Local cheese, wine, chocolates, honey, coffee and beer will be offered. Please phone (423)753-0044 or (423)741-2815 for more information. Very few artist spaces are still available.
