As a child, I was terrified of thunderstorms. With the first crack of thunder, I would start to cry with fear, and almost suffocate myself by burying my head and face in my mother's lap. As a teenager, it was hard not to cry, but I would still bury my head in a pillow. My parents were sure that I will never live on my own due to this overwhelming fear of storms. On the night of April 28 into the early morning hours of April 29, that deep rooted fear emerged. I believe that the emotion of ‘fear’ was felt by many that night. Living in this area, I have always had a sense of protection from tornadoes because of the surrounding mountains. That sense of security was shattered in just a few seconds. I, along with my staff, would like to express our deepest condolences to those who lost loved ones in the pathway of destruction and devastation from the storms. As neighbors help neighbors, the property damages and the rearranged landscaping can be repaired, but the loss of life will leave a void forever. While there are so many more questions than answers, our thoughts and prayers are with you. 'Thank you' goes to the many volunteers directly involved in the giving of their time, donations, and comforting support to assist those during their time of healing. It seems a great time on this Mother's Day, to give thanks for our family, friends, neighbors and our Mothers. Let them all know how special they are to you and show them that you care. Make Mom proud of you! Also, on this Memorial Day holiday, remember that 'all gave some and some gave all' for our freedom. And remember those Moms and Dads and others who are still giving! Thank you goes to all for your support to our advertisers and their businesses and services. Join us in our ‘round up’ of 2011 activities. Continue to get involved and show your support. Call 423-926-9983 for details. Check out events calendar (on page 23) or visit our website, voicemagazineforwomen.com, for our 2011 projects, contests, and community activities. Would you like to share your story with others? Let us know. Send your emails, inquiries, and/or your letters with your comments and suggestions to comments@voicemagazineforwomen.com Have a safe holiday! And ...Mother, you are very special to me – I love you! Happy Mother's Day! For this 2011 New Year, accept changes, expect challenges, and anticipate miracles! Thought of the month: "Everyone has his burden. What counts is how you carry it." Merle Miller Verse of the month: “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. -- Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, KJV

“GOD IS LOVE. WHOEVER LIVES IN LOVE LIVES IN GOD, AND GOD IN HIM.” 1 JOHN 4:16

Zip Code:

There once was a man who had nothing for his family to eat. He had an old rifle and three bullets. So, he decided that he would go out hunting and kill some wild game for dinner. As he went down the road, he saw a rabbit. He shot at the rabbit and missed it. The rabbit ran away. Then he saw a squirrel and fired a shot at the squirrel and missed it. The squirrel disappeared into a hole in a cottonwood tree. As he went further, he saw a large wild 'Tom' turkey in the tree, but he had only one bullet remaining. A voice spoke to him and said, “Pray first, aim high and stay focused.” However, at the same time, he saw a deer which was a better kill. He brought the gun down and aimed at the deer. But, then he saw a rattlesnake between his legs about to bite him, so he naturally brought the gun down further to shoot the rattlesnake. Still, the voice said again to him, ''I said 'Pray, Aim high and Stay focused.’'' So, the man decided to listen to God's voice. He prayed, then aimed the gun high up in the tree and shot the wild turkey. The bullet bounced off the turkey and killed the deer. The handle fell off the gun and hit the snake in the head and killed it. And, when the gun had gone off, it knocked him into a pond. When he stood up to look around, he had fish in all his pockets, a dead deer and a turkey to eat for his family. The snake (Satan) was dead simply because the man listened to God. Moral of the story: Pray first before you do anything, aim and shoot high in your goals, and stay focused on God. Never let others discourage you concerning your past. The past is exactly that, 'the past.' Live every day one day at a time and remember that only God knows our future and that he will not put you through any more than you can bear. Do not look to man for your blessings, but look to the doors that only He has prepared in advance for you in your favor. Wait, be still and patient: keep God first and everything else will follow. And don't worry about tomorrow, God is already there!

Happy Mother’s Day

favorite photo in a refined fashion by buying her a canvas baby photo print. Have her favorite image printed onto canvas, making the piece ready for hanging and creating a lasting memento of her adorable baby.

Celebrating Mother's Day is all about giving Mom special treatment! Here are ideas to make a memorable Mother's Day: • Offer Breakfast in Bed. Serve champagne with a strawberry! While you are cooking, have the kids draw pictures for Mommy or if they are old enough they can make their own cards. If there are any flowers in the yard have the kids pick a few and put them in a small vase. Arrange everything on a tray, deliver to her as a family! • Offer her a day at the spa, flowers, or a vacation from the housework. • If possible, spend 'quality' time with her! What mom wants more that anything is feel love and appreciated! • Plan an activity that SHE likes to do, even if that means staying home and watching reruns of Dancing with the Stars, or watching a video - well, bring on the popcorn! Celebrating Mother's Day - this should be the easiest thing to do...right? What 'if' you have tension in your relationship? Take this opportunity to put differences aside and just enjoy your mom. Help her enjoy her special day. Tips on making Mom proud: • Positive SELFLESS attitude • Mother's Day Card and/or a Mother's Day gift (flowers, candy, something special to her) If she does not live near, take time to mail cards and gifts. AND call your mom on Mother's Day. • Plan ahead what you want to do because you want to know that she's available because you should always call your mom on Mother's Day. • If you struggle with communicating decide ahead of time what you want to share with your mother. Keep it simple and sincere and keep the focus on Mom. Celebrating a New Mom: Gifts for the 'new' Mom: • Give the new Mom a piece of jewelry representative of her growing family. Buy a personalized ring with her birthstone, with the birthstones of the other members of her family or an engraved bracelet with her new child's name, birth date, length and weight and the date of the Mother's Day the gift is intended to commemorate. • Canvas Baby Photo Print - Give the new mom the chance to display her

Make Mom Proud

• Hire a babysitter! Mom needs to have her special time and a shopping spree with her friends will be greatly appreciated! How do you celebrate Mother's Day when your Mother is deceased? The sadness can overshadow the day. So, in healing, embrace the holiday with your mother's memory. Remember the smiles, how she made you laugh, or feel good. You will always carry a part of her inside you, so celebrate with the happy activities that remind you of her. Here are few suggestions to embrace her spirit and keep her memory alive on Mother's Day: •

Celebrating a Military Mom The term "Military Mothers" describes two distinct groups of women. On the one hand, it describes mothers whose sons and daughters are members of the military. On the other, it describes mothers who are themselves members of the military. I assure you, both groups are heroes. Being a military mom takes a great deal of strength, courage and faith.

Go with a good friend to a local restaurant and order a meal that was your mom's favorite. Wear her favorite color or her favorite color or outfit that she liked on you! Wear a white carnation (a symbol to honor a mother who is far away or deceased.)

• Have a simple family gathering to reminisce about the past Mother's Days. Remember the surprises, the meals, and share happy memories. Start discussions with, "Do you remember when mom...?" Sharing memories can be a loving blanket just like the one that your Mom wrapped around you whenever you needed her warmth. • Visit her grave on Mother's Day and leave flowers or plants with little gifts, cards or trinkets tucked inside the planter. Sit and chat next to her. If you share it with family members, take old family photos there with you. You can swap pictures, old stories, and share a closeness with family memories. • Make a donation to your mom's favorite charity. There are many worthy organizations that need donations: libraries, local wildlife sanctuary, scouting, schools, missing children's organizations, etc. On Mother's Day, make your mom special by keeping her memory alive!

The Class Reunion: What toWear

Forget dressing like you are back in high school or college, and seeking to make a fashion statement. That class reunion is about how you have grown in style and sophistication, and should accentuate your maturity and beauty. Follow some basic rules and have fun!

Little Black Dress

The little black dress is a safe bet for an evening reunion. The exact length of the dress (right above to right below the knee) is perfect, and details such as sleeveless or short sleeve will depend on how much skin you are comfortable showing. Add a bright wrap for chilly evenings, dress up with sexy sandals and a bold bracelet. (Option: Evening Suit - an after-five style in black, champagne or ivory in crepe or silk.) And now is the time to wear the 'good' jewelry.

Outdoor and Casual Events

Some reunions span an entire weekend. If your plans include picnics, pool parties or other family-oriented outside events, go with the same strategy as evening events. Opt for understated outfits: a pretty sundress, one piece bathing suit with sarong, cropped pants and a cute T-shirt. Stick with simple and comfortable.

Dos and Don'ts

Don't skimp on grooming - Glowing skin, healthy hair, manicured nails and toes are essential. Now is the time to try "extra" treatments like professional highlights and microdermabrasion. Do shop early - Once you have a date and an idea of the dressiness of the event, you can start the search for an outfit. Locate the dress before you buy shoes or accessories. Do update your look - A new outfit doesn't have to be young and trendy; it does need to show that you've progressed over the years and pay attention to changing styles. Make sure you hair and makeup have changed over the years, too. Don't dress too young - With today's advances in skin and body treatments, it's not impossible to look really hot at your 50th high school reunion. But don't show off your girlish figure with skintight dresses, miniskirts and multiple body piercings: you'll look ridiculous. Instead, show off a great figure with chic body-skimming sweaters or beautifully cut sheath dresses or skirts. Don't worry too much - Everyone else is stressing too! Enjoy seeing old friends and catching up. Source: Clothing and Tips, Cynthia Nellis, About.com Guide

About National Women Build Week

National Women Build Week challenges women to devote at least one day to the effort to eliminate poverty housing. Women make a difference in their communities by building homes and raising awareness of local housing needs. The event is typically held the week leading up to Mother’s Day. These dates are significant to many volunteers, as families with children make up a staggering number of those in need of adequate housing. In addition to sponsoring special events like National Women Build Week, Lowe’s underwrites the We encourage overall Women Build program. By 2013, Lowe’s you to stay involved will have contributed nearly $40 million to year-round by signing Habitat for Humanity. Senior Care Resources When your elderly loved one starts neglecting or struggling with some aspects of daily living, it’s time to start researching senior care resources. Caring for an elderly loved one can be overwhelming in every way—emotionally, mentally, physically, and financially. But you don’t have to do it alone. Below are several supportive options dependent on the level of care needed. • Adult Day Services provide safety, socialization, and stimulation for seniors during the day so they are able to continue to live at home with their family for as long as possible—enabling caregivers are able to continue to work and take care of personal needs. • Assisted Living Residences allow aging individuals who need help with some activities of daily living, to live with in an apartment style residence with a sense of independence. Housekeeping, maintenance, and meals are generally provided. • At-Home Nursing Care provides seniors with assistance with eating, bathing, dressing, eating, and medication administration is their home environment. Some families utilize at-home nursing care in the evenings and on weekends in combination with an Adult Day Services program during the week to provide their loved one with socialization as well. • Nursing Homes staff nurses 24- hours a day so that residents have access to continual medical care and physician oversight. This level of care becomes necessary when the individual can no longer perform any activities of daily living without assistance or because their caregiver’s health has deteriorated. Just as “it takes a village to raise a child,” a senior cared for with the help of family and community can thrive with dignity. If your family could benefit from a Bristol-based Adult Day Services option, please contact YWCA Bristol at 423.968.9444 for more information.

Marketing Moment

The 10,000-Pound Telephone Over the last few months, we’ve been discussing why and how to market to existing customers. Marketing to existing customers is much more profitable. Last month we learned about email marketing. Another great tool to use when marketing to existing customers is social media. But, I’m not going to talk about social media today. EVERYBODY talks about social media. I’d like to focus on an old stand-by, the telephone. Everybody HATES telemarketers. They interrupt Ann Johnson your dinner, offer products you’re not remotely interested in, and most are generally obnoxious and sometimes even rude! (Occasionally, I get a call from a great telemarketer. And, I always make sure to tell them what a great job they’re doing before I tell them I’m not interested.) Marketing to your existing customers by telephone is NOT telemarketing. It’s another tool to build relationships and loyalty. Let me give you an example. I am part of a loyalty club at one of my favorite clothing stores. I give them my “number” every time I make a purchase, and I usually get a discount. I’ve opted in on their email marketing, their direct mail marketing and their telephone marketing. (I REALLY love this store!) Does that mean I get a telephone call once a week from a stranger in a far off land? No. If I did, I’d probably stop shopping there. About once a quarter, when they have a REALLY big sale, someone from the local store calls me to let me know about it. I probably already received an email and a postcard about this sale, but the telephone call a couple days before the event is what gets me there. I don’t know the sales people at this store, but the caller lets me know she’s “Susie” from the XXX store in Johnson City. She tells me they’re calling all their XXX club members to let them know about the sale. As a result of that call, I’M THERE! Along the lines of email marketing, this type of phone call is a permissionbased, tightly targeted marketing tool. You reach people who are interested in your product, and you give them information they find valuable. You build a relationship with them. At the end of the call, give your customer an opt-out option. Say something like, “Would you mind if we call you when we have our next big sale?” You can target these calls even more by using questionnaires about your customers’ favorite brands and letting them know when you have a new shipment. (ala Zappos!) If you’d like more information about calling your existing customers, give us a call. We’ll be happy to work with you! Ann Johnson is the owner of Business Partner, a one-stop marketing resource for small to medium businesses.

• If a new rider is still using training wheels, be sure the wheels are mounted correctly and that the training wheels still have appropriate wear. • Make sure the kid's bicycle is the proper size and, if adjustable, is at the right height for the rider right now. The kid should sit and balance comfortably on the seat and touch the ground. • Kids should wear bright colors--fluorescent if possible--and avoid riding bikes in the evening or at sundown. If a kid must be out after dark, the bicycle should have a headlight visible for 500 feet as well as rear reflectors. Riders should not wear sandals, flip flops or ride with bare feet.

• Be sure your kid rides with traffic, is aware of motorists, and obeys all traffic laws. Be sure your kid knows not to stop and talk with anyone they do not know personally for their own personal safety.

WE WOMEN RIDE! “I ride my own,” has become a mantra for many women riders who have discovered the joys or riding motorcycles. No longer do many women want to ride on the back – they want their own bike and their own gear that is specifically for women who ride the 'hog.'

Angie. (The Harley-Davidson® Fat Boy Motorcycle was first produced in 1990.) In the last few years, women have stepped up to the challenge. Accessories, equipment, and classes have been directed to the women taking to the road on a motorcycle. Women have shown confidence in their abilities and shown an interest in gaining knowledge about bikes. The LOH generally gather as the entire group of HOG, Just in time for Mother's but occasionally they have gone to Barter and shared Day, Black Wolf is hosting an lunch together. upcoming event just for Ladies- on May 14, Saturday, from 6:00pm-9:00pm. The event will provide music, food and some special pampering for all the ladies that evening! So give Mom a treat- come out and enjoy the adventure, freedom, and camaraderie at Black Wolf HarleyDavidson®, Bristol, VA.

Ladies Night Only! LADIES OF HARLEY (LOH) at the Chapter Challenge.

Women often begin to ride because they know of someone riding and they want to try it. Motorcycle riding does for some women what book clubs do. It gives them a shared experience and it allows them to have a common bond with a group of women that they can come to call friends. Out of these friendships, women share a sense of adventure, a freedom of spirit, and a camaraderie that builds into serving communities. The Bristol Chapter of the Ladies of Harley (LOH), a part of the dealership’s Black Wolf Chapter of Harley Owners Group (HOG), seeks to have fun and become servants in helping others. “With our fundraisers and charity rides, we do nice things for people who need it,” stated Bristol Director of the LOH, Angie Conley. “And our group of ladies are as diverse as it gets – nurses, teachers, and many business professionals. And it is surprising to many that our events are mostly family events!” For some of the events and rides, Kathy Wampler, Pat Litton and Angie Conley have served as Road Captains. “We enjoy the organizing of the events, but occasionally we go out in a smaller group of just us ladies,” according to Angie. “People do recognize us as ladies and we get a fanfare and lots of stares, but we just love 'the ride' to have fun and leave the worries behind!” These ladies generally organize the HOG events for the entire group. There are several types of activities and charities the Chapter supports. Some of the supported events have included the Southwest VA Food Bank, Blood Drives, Relay for Life, Cancer Outreach, and an extra special Angel Tree at Christmas. “The Black Wolf Chapter is very active locally. We also have dinner rides most weeks, weekend rides, charity benefits, and training classes. In April, we had a 'Blessings of the Bikes.' It is a very welcoming organization.” Recently the Black Wolf Chapter won the 2011 Virginia HOG Chapter Challenge with nearly 60 riders to participate. All Chapters in Virginia (approximately 17) challenges riders to ride to a pre-arranged location. The chapter with the most members to sign in and the most points – 2 pt. per drive and mile, 1 pt. for a passenger - wins the challenge. While many of the ladies do own a bike, many also ride with husbands or boyfriends. “Everybody looks the same once you are on a bike. So, once you attend one of our Black Wolf events, there is a bond. You will return again and again because of the friends you gain and for the adventure.” Motorcycles are big and powerful machines and women have long been taught that big powerful things are for men only. Not so. “For my 40th birthday my husband surprised me with a Fat Boy. It's the very best and nicest gift I have ever got, "stated

OOPS!!! In last month's review of the entertaining Barter Production, Age of Arousal, Voice Magazine failed to give submission credit to Adelaide Clark. Ms. Clark is a senior Chemistry major at Emory & Henry College. She has been writing for the college newspaper, "The Whitetopper," for 4 years and reviewing Barter Theatre shows for 3 years. Voice Magazine apologizes for the oversight!

“Impressions of the Highlands” is the theme for the 2011 Virginia Highlands Festival, which will be held July 23 through August 7, in Abingdon, Virginia. The theme was chosen based on our selected Signature Artist, who painted a scene from our Arts and Crafts vendors in an impressionism style. Each year, we select an artist that sets the theme for the Festival and their original artwork graces the cover of our Highlander Magazine, which details all the events during the Festival. The 2011 Signature Art was created by Abingdon, nestled in the mountains of Abingdon artist Kyle Buckland. Southwest Virginia, is an area of natural beauty that is rich in history and tradition. The festival began in 1948 and, over the years, has grown and flourished into one of the top tourist events in North America. The Virginia Highlands Festival offers 16 days of family entertainment with music, juried fine arts and photography exhibits, a juried arts and crafts show, and an antiques market with vendors from all over the South. The Antiques Market features 45,000 square feet of antiques with many unique and hard to find pieces including jewelry and furniture. Also enjoy, home and garden tours, a Colonial Faire, a Creative Writing Day with nationally known writers, and fun events and workshops for the kids. Visual and performing artists, including special performances at the Barter Theatre, will take the stage, and guided tours, nature walks and field trips to our great outdoors, along with workshops, lectures, and more will offer something for everyone. In it’s 63rd year, the Festival boasts a wide variety of music from Bluegrass and traditional mountain music to Celtic, classical and gospel. This year a free Street Party kicking off the opening weekend of the Festival will feature “Jay and the Americans”. The concert begins at 8:00 pm in Arts Depot Square. “Jay and the Americans” first record was “Tonight” (from the Broadway Musical West Side Story), and their breakout hit song was “She Cried”. “Jay and the Americans” next chart hit was “Only in America”, followed by the top ten hits “Come a Little Bit Closer” and later “This Magic Moment”. In 2002, “Jay and the Americans” were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, placing them among the greatest vocal groups in Rock ‘n Roll history. You don’t want to miss this performance and best of all, it is free for everyone. Celtic Weekend is always a huge hit for the Festival drawing large crowds to its foot stomping performances. This year the band Scythian will kick off the weekend on Friday night, July 29, with a 7:30 pm performance at the Abingdon Market Pavilion. The weekend performances will follow on Saturday and Sunday with all day performances by Celtic bands from all over the country. Also of interest this year is a special performance for our Celtic Weekend features several bands including Solas, Christian Contemporary Concert which will be performing on Saturday, July 30th. featuring the band “Jars of Clay”, who will be promoting their latest album release “The Shelter”. The band will perform on Saturday, August 6th at 7:00 pm. Several Performing Arts shows this year highlight a truly spectacular year for the Festival. Billy Dean will be performing at the Barter Theatre on Monday, August 1st at 7:30 pm. Billy Dean’s music has sold millions worldwide with 11 top ten singles and 5 number 1’s, which expanded this singer’s career. An accomplished musician, Dean has a rare, unique ability, to take you on an emotional journey with just him and his guitar. In 1992, Dean won the Academy of Country Music’s Songwriter of the Year

award for “Somewhere in My Broken Heart”. You really don’t want to miss this truly talented performer. The Festival will also feature a comedy ventriloquist, Lynn Trefzger, who will perform on Sunday, July 24th at 7:30 pm at the Barter Theatre. If you haven’t seen a ventriloquist perform, you won’t want to miss Lynn’s cast of characters and her comedy. One more event of note for the Festival this year, the Photography Committee will present a lecture from Bob Krist, a well-known National Geographic Traveler photographer. He will be giving some photography tips that you won’t want to miss. His lecture costs $15.00 and tickets can be purchased on our website at www.vahighlandsfestival.org. The lecture takes place on July 23rd from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. Best-selling author, Adriana Trigiani, will present at this year’s VHF Creative Writing Days. Adriana was raised in a small coal-mining town in southwest Virginia in a big Italian family. She chose her hometown for the setting and title of her debut novel, the critically acclaimed bestseller Big Stone Gap. The heartwarming story continues in the novel’s sequels Big Cherry Holler, Milk Glass Moon, and Home to Big Stone Gap. Stand-alone novels Lucia, Lucia, The Queen of the Big Time, Rococo, all toped the bestseller lists, as did Trigiani’s2009 Very Valentine and its 2010 sequel Brava, Valentine. Adriana has also written for television (The Cosby Show) and films, authored children’s literature, and co-authored a cookbook with her sister. She will offer workshops on Monday, July 25 and Tuesday, July 26 at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon, Virginia at 2 PM each day. Attendance fees for the VHF Creative Writing Days are $25 for one day or $40 for both days. Other presenters include screenwriter Belle Avery, poet Henry Hart, songwriter Mary Munsey, and Barter Theatre’s Richard Rose and Catherine Bush, and Nashville legend Jim Lauderdale. Legendary songwriter, Jim Lauderdale, will present at this year’s VHF Creative Writing Days. Jim is a multi-talented performer and songwriter, with successes in both country and bluegrass music. His career has taken him all over the United States and abroad, making him an international recording artist with an ever-growing fan base. He is among Nashville's "A" list of songwriters, with songs recorded by artists such as Patty Loveless, George Jones, The Dixie Chicks, Vince Gill, and George Strait, just to name a few. He has also toured with the likes of Lucinda Williams, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Rhonda Vincent and Elvis Costello, among others. Jim won "Artist of the Year" and "Song of the Year" at the first "Honors and Awards Show" held by the Americana Music Association in 2002. He will be presenting songwriting workshops and performing on the second day of the VHF Creative Writing event, which is Tuesday, July 26 at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon, Virginia at 10 AM and 2 PM. Attendance fees for the VHF Creative Writing Days are $25 for one day or $40 for both days. Other presenters include best-selling author Adriana Trigiani, screenwriter Belle Avery, poet Henry Hart, songwriter Mary Munsey, Barter Theatre’s Richard Rose and Catherine Bush, and Nashville legend Jim Lauderdale. The Arts & Crafts tried a new location last year on Remsburg Drive that proved to be a total success for the Festival and we are happy to report that the location will be the same for this year. We had great reviews from tourists and vendors about the central location that blocked off a street in downtown Abingdon. The location worked well for the Festival putting Arts and Crafts located with the music events performed at the Abingdon Market Pavilion and our Youth events located at the Fields Penn House. It is also within walking distance to the Arts Depot, where you will find our Juried Fine Arts exhibit. To find other events around the Town, we provide a free trolley service running every 15 minutes that takes you around the Town and puts you right where the events take place. To make parking easier, you can take the buses or trolleys from Exit 14 off I-81, where the Antiques Market is located at the Virginia Highlands Community College, or Exit 19 at the Rose’s store parking lot. We invite you to enjoy the fun this summer in Historic Abingdon, Virginia! With over 250 events taking place, you will surely find something of interest to enjoy. Visit www.vahighlandsfestival.org for more information and a complete schedule of events, or call the Festival Office at 276-623-5266.

Simply Health By Jennifer Raichlin-Darrow, Certified Wellness Coach To say it plainly, being healthy does not have to be complicated. Yet, as long as I can remember, friends, relatives, and my elders have always sought my advice about various aspects of their lives and how to make it better. Since becoming certified as a wellness coach, I have encountered even more people seeking my advice. Many are surprised to learn that I approach exploration of their physical health by asking them to look at areas Jennifer Raichlin-Darrow of their life that deal with their emotions, career satisfaction, or relationships. Well, why not? Is depression not an emotion? Is stress not an emotion? Certainly they are, and very powerful ones. Do they affect your physical health? Of course they do and any commercial for a depression or anxiety drug will attest to this. Depression’s physical symptoms range from simple headaches, to sleepless nights, to severe chronic chest or back pain, even digestive issues come into play. What about stress? The simple fact is that stress triggers the ancient programming of our DNA go into “fight or flight” mode. And while this would have been good for our ancestors chasing down a wooly mammoth for dinner, we don’t have to do that anymore. So instead what

happens is this “fight or flight” mode kicks in all day-everyday (in traffic, when the kids argue with you about bedtime or dinner, or when you’re late for work, etc). When your body goes into this mode it creates excess hormones that wreak havoc on the physical body, because you don’t need to be producing these hormones all day long. The result is often high blood pressure (or anxiety because of this), obesity, sleeplessness, digestive disorders, and on and on. So the simple way to approach this is to look at your life. Really look at it! Decide what is not working, then find a way to obtain change. Undoubtedly sticking to a program is the greatest challenge, but it is the only way to gain lasting change. Most of my clients often come to me with the idea that they want nutrition and fitness advice, but by the time we reach the 3rd or 4th visit they usually decide that it is ultimately some other area of their life that is standing in the way of their physical health goals. I let them reach this conclusion on their own because people learn more quickly when they discover through their own initiative. As their coach I simply help them find the right path to reach this realization. My best advice to anyone seeking health challenges is to slow down and begin to listen to your own heart, mind, and body. It doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. You already know the answers you need to find vitality, joy, and health…you just need to listen. May is Allergy Awareness Month

What Are Allergies?

An Uncontrollable Urge To Smile. Free with every cleaning.

Allergies are abnormal immune system reactions to things that are typically harmless to most people. When you're allergic to something, your immune system mistakenly believes that this substance is harmful to your body. In an attempt to protect the body, the immune system produces IgE antibodies to that allergen. Those antibodies then cause certain cells in the body to release chemicals into the bloodstream, one of which is histamine.

Why Do People Get Allergies? The tendency to develop allergies is often hereditary, which means it can be passed down through your genes. However, just because a parent or sibling has allergies doesn't mean you will definitely get them; just the likelihood of having allergies.

What are Common Things Are People Are Allergic to? Food, Insect bites and stings, Airborne particles,( such as dust mites; mold spores; animal dander, and dried saliva from your pets; and pollen from grass, ragweed, and trees), Medicines and Chemicals ( Some cosmetics or laundry detergents can make people break out in an itchy rash (hives). Usually, this is because someone has a reaction to the chemicals in these products. Dyes, household cleaners, and pesticides used on lawns or plants also can cause allergic reactions in some people.)

How Do Doctors Diagnose and Treat Allergies? If your family doctor suspects you might have an allergy, he or she might refer you to an allergist (a doctor who specializes in allergy treatment) for further testing. The allergist will ask a series of questions, an d will perform tests to confirm an allergy— these will depend on the type of allergy someone has and may include a skin test or blood test.

What to do first - Avoidance

COSMETIC DENTISTRY • SPA DENTISTRY • RESTORATIVE DENTISTRY • LASER DENTISTRY

In some cases, like food allergies, avoiding the allergen is a life-saving necessity. That's because, unlike allergies to airborne particles that can be treated with shots or medications, the only way to treat food allergies is to avoid the allergen entirely. For example, people who are allergic to peanuts should avoid not only peanuts, but also any food that might contain even tiny traces of them. Avoidance can help protect people against non-food or chemical allergens, too. In fact, for some people, eliminating exposure to an allergen is enough to prevent allergy symptoms and they don't need to take medicines or go through other allergy treatments.

Here are some things that can help you avoid airborne allergens: • Keep family pets out of certain rooms, like your bedroom, and bathe them if necessary. • Remove carpets or rugs from your room (hard floor surfaces don't collect dust like carpets.) • Don't hang heavy drapes and get rid of other items that allow dust to accumulate. • Clean frequently (if your allergy is severe, you may be able to get someone else to do your dirty work!) • Use special covers to seal pillows and mattresses if you're allergic to dust mites. • If you're allergic to pollen, keep windows closed when pollen season's at its peak, change your clothing after being outdoors — and don't mow lawns. • If you're allergic to mold, avoid damp areas, such as basements, and keep bathrooms and other mold-prone areas clean and dry. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) report that more than 50 million Americans are affected by allergic diseases. The good news is that doctors and scientists are working to better understand allergies, to improve treatment methods, and to possibly prevent allergies altogether. If you're not sure whether your symptoms are caused by allergies or a cold, talk with your doctor. Reviewed by: William J. Geimeier, MDhttp://www.medicinenet.com/eye_allergy/page2.htm

Go Local for Smart and Tasty Produce By Crystal Robertson, UT Extension Agent- Unicoi County

April showers bring more than May flowers, and Tennessee farmers are already making their ways to local farmers markets. This year’s first crops are in, and customers can find almost anything their hearts desire; fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers, and crafts. These markets give consumers a chance to meet the farmer and purchase products directly from him. Buying produce from local farmers markets or farm stands ensures that the produce is fresh and that the local farms are being supported. Most produce in the US is shipped an average of 1500 Crystal Robertson miles and picked 4 to 7 days before being placed on supermarket shelves. Fruits and vegetables from farmer's markets are transported shorter distances, thereby saving fuel. Farmers market fruits and vegetables are picked fresh and have great flavor because they ripen in the field before harvesting. Supporting local farmers helps protect farm lands and supports the local economy. Grocery stores receive produce from across the country and across the world in order to meet the demands of shoppers. Some of it can be local, and some grocery stores do this better than others. Retailers are posting more information in the produce section about where our food is raised, so be sure to look for that the next time you shop. If it has already traveled pretty far, chances are the produce may have been picked early and ripened en route; thus, the flavor may not be as good as local produce ripened in the field. Another great reason to support local farmers is that a visit to your local farmer's market is fun for the whole family and can encourage your children to eat more fruits and vegetables. There are many farmers markets across the region and a few of them are highlighted below to get you started. Tennessee: Sullivan County Kingsport New Downtown Farmers Market, Open Wednesdays and Saturdays (7 a.m.-1 p.m.) in May – October. WHAT IS THE 3/50 PROJECT? Saving the Brick and Mortars our Nation is Built on! Pick 3 – Spend 50

3 – Think of three independently owned business you'd miss most if they were gone. Stop in and say hello. Buy a little something. Your contribution keep those businesses around. 50 – If half the employed US population spent $50.00 each month in independently owned businesses, their purchases would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue. Imagine the positive impact if ¾ population did that! 68 – For every $100.00 spent in independently owned businesses, $68.00 returns to the local economy through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures. If you spend that in a national chain, only $43.00 stays here. Spend it online, and nothing comes home. Visit the 350project.net

Americans for the Arts, the nation's leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts, is conducting its first-ever Local Arts Index that will complement its National Arts Index. Data is being sought from tourism groups, arts venues, arts organizations, arts education, schools, businesses, museums, movie houses, studios, musical supply stores, publications, festivals, poetry slams, concerts, artists, musicians, dancers, playwrights, writers, and more. Kingsport's Cultural Arts Division has been selected to lead the research in Sullivan County, Tenn. The Local Arts Index is the first county-level study designed to measure the health and vitality of the arts industries throughout the U.S. It will cover multiple industries, including nonprofit groups, for-profit arts businesses, employment figures, and more — providing a year-by-year and community-by-community comparison of the nation's arts sector. The findings from the Local Arts Index will be reported this fall. It will offer a data-driven method of making cross-community comparisons (answers the question "How do we stack up?") and help to identify local needs and opportunities and areas of strength.
