Created by Paul Abbott, who was also the creator of Shameless, you sort of know what you are getting ZLWK 1R 2྾HQFH There is a lot of well balanced adult humour set around the dramatic scenes so from one minute to the next you never really know what to expect. Immune Boosters

A

fter the wonderful summer we’ve enjoyed this year, there has been a noticeable change in the air in September, with temperatures starting to drop, especially at night. Your immune system becomes more sluggish in cold weather, and can also be severely weakened by a number of factors: these include excess alcohol, cigarettes, a high-fat or proteinGH¿FLHQW GLHW ODFN RI VOHHS or stress. As well as avoiding these factors, try the following tips to help boost your immune system and maintain your positive health and well-being:

1. Eat a mucus-free diet A number of foods create too much mucous in the diet, especially milk and dairy products, eggs and red meat (some people are particularly susceptible to this). Excess mucous clogs up the lymphatic system, so try to cut down on or avoid these foods. Try soya or rice milk, make your

Keep drinking When you are under viral attack, your immune system needs to get rid of toxic debris, which it does via the kidneys and bladder. This is why frequent trips to the loo are often a sign of infection. Drink tepid water, herbal teas, diluted fruit juices or vegetable juices to help the kidneys to do their MRE &XW EDFN RQ FR྾HH WHD DQG alcohol, and drink at least 6 – 8 glasses of water daily.

Or eat room temperature kiwi fruits x 2 daily, preferably before your meals (kiwis enhance the digestive enzymes in the stomach and aid digestion). 4. Maintain adequate temperature and humidity levels Central heating can dry up your mucous membranes, so humidify your room with a saucer of water near the heater to moisten the air and help prevent sinusitis. 5. Exercise Make sure you continue to exercise during the winter months even if only for a short period during your lunch-break. Opinion&Comment

Waiting can be bad for your Health

W

hen the latest statistic that waiting times for patients had risen to their highest level yet, there can’t have been too many people that were surprised. There are now over 700.000 people on waiting lists with over 50.000 of them children. That so many people are waiting for treatment in one of the most developed economies in the world is truly frightening. Of course you can take into account the underfunding of the health sector during the economic downturn but it still wouldn’t fully explain why so many people are waiting for the treatment that they need. The fact is that the health budget in Ireland is running on for nearly 15 billion euro a year and this in a country that has a huge number of young people per head of population. In fact Ireland spends more on health per head of population than nearly any other country in the developed world. So the question has to be, what is going wrong and what can be done to remedy it? These are questions that have apparently stumped most, if not nearly all of the professionals, not only in the system but those who are charged with seeing it is run as best as it can. There is no doubt that the people at the coal face in the health system are doing the best that they can but it is becoming increasingly FOHDU WKDW WKHUH DUH VRPH IXQGDPHQWDO V\VWHPLF ÀDZV LQ WKH whole operation. That so many people can be waiting for operations, either in or out patient, is clearly a symptom that something is seriously wrong. It is expected that there could be an overrun of nearly one billion euro in the spending on hospitals this year alone. Clearly the buck has to stop somewhere and in this case it is clear where that is. Minister for Health, Simon Harris is the person charged to run the health system in Ireland and it is something of a poisoned chalice. It has been the ruination of politicians before him. It is clear that there is something fundamental in their approach to the health system that is not working. Can it be the cumbersome bureaucracy of the HSE, the way funds are allocated or catching up with decades of underfunding in the system. There are other health system models in the world that are working better than ours. Would it be so impossible to take D OHDI IURP WKHLU ERRNV DQG VHH LI GRLQJ WKLQJV D GL൵HUHQW ZD\ works? It is usually during the winter months that the cracks in the health system and the cracks in our hospitals are most evident. Our View

No Show is a Good Show

The news that the President of the United States has unceremoniously cancelled, or ‘postponed’ in diplomatic speech, his trip to Ireland can only really be considered a good thing. No matter the kow-towing and forelock tugging that goes on at these events when someone in such a powerful position comes to Ireland the Irish people can really do without the full dog and pony show that follows in this Presidents wake. No doubt the forces of law and order won’t have to put in inordinate bills for overtime to ensure his safety so that can DOVR EH VHHQ DV D EHQH¿W DV ZHOO

I’m with Roy

R

oy Keane has certainly been in the news a lot in the last few weeks. He’s probably had a higher PHGLD SUR¿OH than Leo Varadker. He’s certainly taken up more column inches and radio time than his manager Martin O’Neill, or the Irish team’s dismal loss to Wales in the Nations Cup and respectable draw away to Poland in a friendly. Roy is someone who polarises opinion. You either like him or you don’t. You either agree with him or you don’t. He doesn’t pull his punches; there’s no in-between. Perhaps that’s why he doesn’t come across well doing his ITV punditry, in my mind. He’s someone with something

Brian Quigley to say, and that doesn’t sit well with a station who would prefer if you didn’t say anything, RU MXVW VDLG EODQG LQR൵HQVLYH things. I’m with Keane in the whole Harry Arter / Jonathan Walters spat. He shouldn’t have said what he’s reported to have said, or acted the way he’s reported to have acted, but we shouldn’t be KHDULQJ DERXW LW 6WX൵ OLNH WKDW

shouldn’t be leaving the camp. Roy didn’t hit anyone or say anything racist, sexist or homophobic – all things that would have crossed a line in my book. He was cruel in what he said to the guys but they should have been able to deal with it. It didn’t need to be washed in public. I hope Keane doesn’t lose his job over this. He’s the greatest player we have ever had, and we need his input into reviving our national team. Obviously he has anger management issues and needs to address these, but he should keep his job. Martin O’Neill was right to defend him. I hate the phenomenon of ‘player power’. It got Ranieri moved on from Leicester after winning the Premiership. It got Peter Beardsley investigated for supposedly bullying just because he was tough with

some academy players he was coaching at Newcastle. Football is meant to be a sport for tough characters, not prima donnas. The poor state of the Ireland team isn’t all down to Keane and O’Neill. They can only work with what they’ve got. We have a decent squad of players at the moment but they are not as good as previous groups. We are building for the future. Less and less Irish players are making the grade at Premiership and Championship teams, due to the money the clubs have to buy in foreign players. This is a fact that we can’t ignore. If we had a stronger league here we could pick from that more. The fact that our league is weak is John Delaney’s fault, not Roy Keane’s or Martin O’Neill’s.

HOROSCOPES Nathusius’ Pipistrelle with ring (Photo Daniel Hargreaves) SOME OF OUR Irish bats have become the envy of their fellow chiropterans as they have been bedecked with silver rings and are rocking a new uber cool look! On the 2nd September 6 Nathusius’ Pipistrelles (Pipistrellus nathusii) – 3 males and 3 females were caught using a harp trap and acoustic lure in Killeshandra, Co. Cavan. All 6 were fitted with rings inscribed with the codes IRL0016 to IRL0021. We have 9 species of bats resident in Ireland. Up until the mid-90s there were only 7 species but then it was found that our Pipistrelle bat was actually 2 different species – and was split into Common Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pipistrellus) and Soprano Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pygmaeus). Around the same time the first confirmed Irish breeding colony of Nathusius’ Pipistrelle (often referred to as P.nath for short by bat people) was discovered in May 1997 near Lough Neagh.

FEAR by Bob Woodward With authoritative reporting honed through eight presidencies from Nixon to Obama, author Bob Woodward reveals in unprecedented detail the harrowing life inside President Donald Trump’s White House and precisely how he makes decisions on major foreign and domestic policies. Woodward draws from hundreds of hours of interviews with firsthand sources, meeting notes, personal diaries, files and documents. The focus is on the explosive debates and the decision-making in the Oval Office, the Situation Room, Air Force One and the White House residence.

EVENT of the week

There is still little known about Nathusius’ Pipistrelles in Ireland and the UK and in recent years projects have been setup in both countries to gain a greater understanding of the ecology, current status and conservation threats for this species. Populations in Continental Europe can be highly migratory with some travelling distances of up to 1,900km between summer and winter roosts but there are also some countries where the species is present all year round. Recent studies in the UK using rings on bats have discovered that some of the UK population migrate as far as Latvia and Lithuania. It is still unclear if the Irish population of this bat is migratory or not. Hopefully the ringing of the some individuals will help to determine if this is the case or not. The project also hopes to establish a clearer picture of the population size and locations in Ireland to help with conservation efforts. It has been shown on the continent that wind turbines pose a significant threat to migrating bats.

Daily life for staff and patients at the world’s longest-running maternity hospital, where an average of 24 babies are born every day. Grandmother Kay helps daughter Nicola through childbirth, young couple Shauna and Daryl anxiously await their baby’s arrival and Monaghan couple à ine and Arno cope with the news that their unborn child has a life-threatening condition. Brazilian couple Joao and Marianna anxiously await the arrival of their first child together, but it seems the baby does not want to come out.

2ND ANNIVERSARY NOEL COLFER

In loving memory of Noel Colfer, late of Larchville whose 2nd anniversary occurs on the 24th of September. Noel’s anniversary Mass will take place in Br. Edmund Rice Chapel, Mount Sion on Thursday 20th September at 7pm.

When tomorrow starts without me, And I’m not here to see, If the sun should rise and find, Your eyes all filled with tears for me, I wish so much you wouldn’t cry, The way you did today, While thinking of the many things, We didn’t get to say. I know how much you love me, As much as I love you, And each time you think of me, I know you’ll miss me too, But when tomorrow starts without me, Please try to understand, That an angel came and called my name, And took me by the hand, And said my place was ready, In Heaven far above, And that I’d have to leave behind, All those I dearly love. But as I turned to walk away, A tear fell from my eye, For all my life I’d always thought, I didn’t want to die, I had so much to live for, And so much yet to do, It seemed almost impossible, That I was leaving you. I thought of all the yesterdays, The good ones and the bad, I thought of all the love we shared, And all the fun we had, If I could relive yesterday, I thought just for a while, I’d say goodbye and kiss you, And maybe see you smile. But then I fully realised, That this could never be, For emptiness and memories, Would take the place of me, And when I thought of worldly things, That I’d miss come tomorrow, I thought of you and when I did, My heart was filled with sorrow, But when I walked through Heaven’s gates, I felt so much at home, When God looked down and smiled at me, From His great golden throne. - From your loving wife Teresa

Ne never looked for praise, He was never one to boast, He just went on quietly working, For the ones he loved the most, His dreams were seldom spoken, His wants were very few, And most of the time his worries, Went unspoken too, He was there a firm foundation, Through all the storms of life, A sturdy hand to hold on to, In times of stress and strife, A true friend we could turn to, When times were good or bad, One of our greatest blessings, That man that we called Dad. - From Alan, David, Jean, Neil and Miriam, and partners and grandchildren Ciara, Cillian, Sam, Alex, James & Art

How do I put on paper, The feelings I have inside, Of a broken hearted daughter, Who has missed you since you died, Lonely is the home without you, Life is not the same, Gone is the mother I loved so dear, Silent a voice I long to hear, I miss you Mam no words can tell, Your voice, your smile, Your love as well, I miss the way you loved me, I know how much you cared, In our special times together, And everything we shared, You showed in your thoughtful ways, I could see it in your face, In your loving ways that tell me, No one could take your place, Distance takes us far apart, And darkens my today, I have to keep remembering, You’re just a thought away, I know you are watching from above, I feel your presence and sense your love, The treasured memories I have of you, Will live with me my whole life through, A Mass, a prayer is all I can give, And these you shall have, As long as I live. - Loving you always, forgetting you never, your heartbroken daughter Mary, son-in-law Eric and grandaughter Donna Could you come back and stay with us a while, I want to hear your voice, And see your smile, I want to hold you tight, And never let you go,

For Mam, You gave me everything you had Your time, your love & care, You never asked for anything And you were always there, Your needs were simple Your wants were few, If your family were happy So were you, A heart of gold, a life so true, Love and respected by all you knew. Father in heaven hear my prayer, Look after my Mam with love and care, A prayer each night keeps me in touch, With a Mam I miss so very much. I think of you in silence, I talk about you too, I have some lovely memories, but I wish I still had you. - From your son Pat, your daughter-in-law Helen and your grandson Adam They say there is a reason, they say that time will heal, But neither time nor reason, will change the way we feel, For no one knows the heartache that lies behind our smiles, No one know how many times we have broken down and cried, Gone from home that smiling face, those cheerful happy days, We want to tell you something, so there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think of, but so hard to be without. - From your loving son Jonathan, daughter-in-law Mary and grandchildren Jonathan Jnr, Jamie, Shane, Darragh, Aaron and grand daughter Cassie I feel lost in so many ways, You are not here today, But I will never forget you, And I know I have been blessed, To have you as my mother, Because you were the best. - Sadly missed by your son Gary, daughter-in-law Ann and grandchildren Casey and Jake

Eileen Fleming, late of Bishopsgrove, Ferrybank, Waterford, who died 28th August 2018. Her Husband Michael, Children Margaret, Catherine, Barry and Clare, and extended family would like to express our sincere gratitude to all those who sympathised with us on our sad loss. Thank you to those who sent mass cards, letters and messages of sympathy and those who travelled long distances to be with us for the repose of her remains, the funeral mass and burial. Your support was a great comfort and very much appreciated. Thanks also to those who made donations to Waterford Hospice. Thank you to the Doctors, Nurses and Carers on Medical 4 in UHW for the great kindness and care they showed to Eileen during her time there. A sincere thanks to Fr Crotty and Fr Flynn who celebrated Eileen’s Funeral Mass in such a dignified way. We would like to thank Thompsons Funeral Directors for the courteous and respectful manner in which they conducted the funeral. To Waterford Golf Club for the wonderful Guard of Honour – thank you, it meant so much to us all. The family will be forever grateful to all those who supported us. As it is impossible to thank everyone individually as a token of our appreciation The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for the intentions of all. Eileen’s months mind mass will take place in The Sacred Heart Church, Ferrybank on Sunday 23rd September at 11am.
