Bishop ‘sorry’ over Mass walk-outs Parents said abortion talk was inappropriate THE BISHOP of Kildare & Leighlin, Dr. Denis Nulty, has apologised to people who felt they had no choice but to take their children out of a Mass at Carlow Cathedral when a guest speaker addressed the congregation on the Eighth Amendment. Speaking on local radio last week, the Bishop said he was sorry that people felt that way when Dr. Deirdre Gleeson, of the group ‘Doctors for Life’, spoke at Mass on the previous Sunday. The Mass in question was serving as a First Communion preparation Mass for four local schools, and some parents felt that the topic was unsuitable for children of that age. One mother told RTE’s ‘Liveline’ how she and her husband took their two children outside because they thought
the talk was ‘inappropriate’. Another person, who was there with his wife and ten-year-old son because the Mass was also serving as his mother-in-law’s Anniversary Mass, also told how they went outside during the talk. The man added that after they returned to Mass, two nearby women refused to share the sign of the peace with them, presumably because of how they had earlier left the ceremony. While Bishop Nulty has apologised for how the talk put people in that position, the Diocese has also defended its decision to invite Dr. Gleeson to speak at the Mass. A statement said there was ‘a great tradition’ of inviting guest VSHDNHUV RQ GLŕľľHUHQW VXEMHFWV ‘to complement the teaching role of priests’.
