A momentous time we live in

Y

ou may not realise it you’ve just lived through quite a momentous year. Sometimes when you’re in the eye of the storm you don’t realise there is so much going on around you. There sure has been a lot going on, both domestically and internationally, in 2017. We have changed Taoiseach this year, trading in a jaded Enda, with all those miles on WKH FORFN IRU D ¿W \RXQJ /HR raring to go. For all the criticism levelled at him, Enda left the building with his head held high. He served his country well as Taoiseach during the austerity years, having been a solid if somewhat unremarkable politician for the previous decades. /HR FDQ WDON WKH WDON EXW QHHGV to show he can walk the walk. He has started well although his handling of the Frances Fitzgerald resignation showed a lack of joined-up thinking. He recovered with his Brexit negotiations performance (with Simon Coveney now as wingman) and this gave him a big

Brian Quigley bounce in the polls that will serve as a welcome Christmas present. Brexit is a big deal. You may be sick of hearing about it but it is the most important issue facing Ireland – and possibly the EU – at the moment. Get it wrong and our prosperity will VX྾HU *HW LW ULJKW ¹ DQG WKLV will take common sense being displayed by both the EU and the UK – and the mistake that ZDV WKH 8. /HDYH YRWH can be minimised. The EU – and the unprecedented peace it has brought to the continent - must survive. We have Merkel still, and Macron now to give us hope. /HWœV QRW IRUJHW WKDW VWDUWHG ZLWK WKH WKUHDW RI /H

Chris, Jenna, Adam and Michelle Lanagin and Ann Kelly at the screening for ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ in the Visual Theatre Pen getting elected in France. How bad would that have made a world already destabilised by Trump? The Trump Show is a grotesque drama being played out live on our Twitter feeds. It is depressing to think that he is the leader of the Free World. He has been such a disappointment, and for all the talk of him not

lasting the distance, he’s still there. Please, close the net on him. Impeach or imprison him. Soon. There have been too many tragedies this year. The various terrorist attacks, the closet to us being the attack at the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester. Rescue 116. Grenfell. Sometimes it all seems too much.

Gerry Adams is standing down and Martin McGuinness passed away. I’m not a big fan but I realise the huge debt we all owe these men for helping to get the Peace Process over the line. My children don’t know of anything other than peace in Ireland. The year 2017 has seen the

homelessness crisis worsen sharply. Brexit aside, homelessness and crime are the two biggest concerns on my radar. I had my list of complaints, suggestions and questions ready for the candidates last month but thankfully we pulled back from pulling the election trigger. Other standout moments of the year for me? In no particular order and ZLWK QR ¿OWHU DSSOLHG WR GLVWLQguish between good and bad, I was dismayed at the tracker mortgage scandal, inspired by Jeremy Corbyn’s Glastonbury speech, disgusted at the DUP’s input into the recent Brexit negotiations, entertained by U2 at Croke Park and sickened by the image of the starving polar bear that served as a stark reminder of what global warming is doing to our planet. So far 2018 promises to be no-less momentous, as many of the dramas from 2018 carry forward and new ones emerge. It will be no-less interesting, upsetting, entertaining and challenging along the way. In the meantime, I’d like to wish you all a very enjoyable New Year.

HOROSCOPES

AH YES, we are all familiar with the Christmas song made famous by Sir Cliff, but what is mistletoe and why is it associated with Christmas? The Mistletoe (Viscum album), is a semi-parasitic shrub. It contains chlorophyll but relies on other plants for water and nutrients which are extracted by sending suckers into the host stem. It grows on a wide variety of deciduous trees and thus is much more conspicuous in winter, with its tangle of evergreen leaves and poisonous, white berries forming balls up to 1m across high up in trees. This is probably to avoid being eaten by animals and to be closer to the light, although early Christians believed that mistletoe was banished to the tops of trees when Jesus was crucified on a cross made from an apple tree on which it was growing.

Molly’s Game is an American crime drama film written and directed by Aaron Sorkin. It is the true story of Molly Bloom a beautiful, young, Olympic-class skier who ran the world’s most exclusive high-stakes poker game for a decade before being arrested in the middle of the night by 17 FBI agents wielding automatic weapons. Her players included Hollywood royalty, sports stars, business titans and finally, unbeknownst to her, the Russian mob. Her only ally was her criminal defense lawyer Charlie Jaffey, who learned that there was much more to Molly than the tabloids led us to believe.

BORRIS NEW YEAR’S EVE MUSIC AND FIREWORKS Borris Town Hall, Main St, Knocknagundarragh, Borris,Carlow, December 31

The name mistletoe comes from the Anglo-Saxon words “mistel” meaning dung and “tan” meaning twig. This most likely comes from the fact that birds eat the white berries and the sticky seeds are expelled through the birds’ faeces onto the host tree branches/twigs where they begin to grow. Mistletoe has separate male and female plants. The male has golden flowers in the spring and the female white berries in the winter. Given that the white berries form between inverted V-shaped sprigs, it is not hard to see where the associations of mistletoe with fertility came from. Women would tie a sprig of mistletoe around their wrist or waist to improve their chances of bearing a child! As for kissing under the mistletoe - Norse myth has it that when Loki killed her son Baldur with a dart made from mistletoe, the goddess Frigg shed tears that became the white berries and decreed she would place a kiss on all passing underneath it.
