Protesters call for better heart service By Jake Maxwell SEVERAL hundred people from Kilkenny, including residents of Graiguenamanagh and Thomastown, were among over 2,000 protesters taking part in a rally in Waterford city over the lack of 24-hour cardiac care at University Hospital Waterford. A statement on behalf of the South East Patient Advocacy Group said: “We would like to commend each and every per-

Following a meeting with Health Minister Simon Harris, Carlow/Kilkenny Deputy Bobby Aylward said the Minister has approved the mobile cath lab (diagnostic imaging equipment

Minister Harris says funding has been set aside for almost a year now to extend the existing service to 12 hours but the hosSLWDO MXVW FDQ¶W ¿QG WKH VWD൵ WR man it. A HALF million-euro investment in new water mains is set to make Graiguenamangh’s water supply more secure and more reliable. The work will involve the replacement of aging and defective water mains. It is expected to sigQLÂżFDQWO\ LPSURYH WKH VXSSO\ IRU local residents and businesses. According to local councillor Peter Cleere, the â‚Ź500,000 project will greatly reduce unplanned outages due to burst pipes and other related issues. Water pressure will also be improved as leakage rates drop. The work, which is being carried out in partnership with Kilkenny County Council, will start on March 12 and will be carried out by David Walsh Civil Engineering Ltd on behalf of Irish Water. “There have been consistent is-
sues surrounding the water supply and burst mains in ‘Graigue’ over the last number of years. Following on from numerous representations which I have been making over the last couple of years, I am thrilled that this project is now at this stage,â€? said Mr Cleere. The project is expected to be completed in early June and will be conducted in short phases to minimise disruption to the local community. Residents and businesses will be given 48 hours prior notice RI ZDWHU VKXW RŕľľV WKDW ZLOO RFFXU during the project. Meanwhile, Ballyragget’s water problems look set to continue for several weeks following high levels of nitrates in the supply there recently. The elevated nitrate levels man that babies under six months old should not be given the water to drink, the HSE has warned.
Boiling the water will not reduce the nitrate levels, which means bottled water or a safe alternative source is required. Irish Water is working with Kilkenny County Council and contractors to resolve this issue ‘as quickly as possible’ in order to enable the restriction to be lifted. Water is currently being sampled and tested on an ongoing basis to determine quality. The company is investigating options to solve the issue, including the feasibility of introducing a new borehole source for the area’s water supply. “Since this restriction has come into force, we have provided supplies of bottled water to a number of families with children under six months in the area,â€? said a statement from Irish Water. “We will continue to proYLGH ZDWHU WR DQ\ DŕľľHFWHG IDPLlies who can contact 1850 278 278 to arrange delivery.â€?

PLAYWRIGHT Brendan Murray is on tenterhooks as he gears up for the premiere of his play, Barney Carey Gets His Wings, which opens at the Watergate Theatre this week. Described as a comic tale of forgotten memories and future possibilities, the play is for all the family. Brendan, from Brighton in England, recalls how he was inspired to write it after a visit to a school in New York. Brendan (inset) met children and asked them to draw pictures of what they wanted to be when they grew up. “One boy, Philip, drew a picture of a ballerina. A couple of years ago I discovered he had become a professional ballet dancer… his dream had come true! So, that was one inspiration. “To be honest, though, the play almost wrote itself; for some reason these characters just wouldn’t shut up! So, I just hope that people enjoy seeing the play and that they will let us know what they thought about it. School performances of Barney Carey Gets His Wings are on Wednesday to Friday, with a family show on Saturday. You can buy your tickets from the Watergate Theatre (056 7761674) or at watergatetheatre.com.
Get healthy in your library ‘AIsle’ be seeing you: Jenny Cooke and Robbie Wall By Jake Maxwell CHRISTMAS came early for Kilkenny couple Jenny Cooke and Robbie Wall, especially when Robbie took it upon himself to organise their dream wedding – and gave it a Christmas theme… in August. The Callan couple’s big day was caught on camera on RTE’s Don’t Tell The Bride recently. Robbie chose the festive theme because Jenny misses out on Christmas at home every year so that Robbie (29) can travel to England to see his son Riley from a previous relationship.
GAA-mad Robbie organised turkey and ham – and pudding – for the wedding dinner and pulled out all the stops to have Jenny (23) brought to the ceremony in a sleigh pulled by reindeer to ensure she had a wedding she’d never forget. NEXT week sees the start of the annual recording period for the All-Ireland Bumblebee Monitoring scheme. The scheme involves recording bumblebees along a 1-2km fixed route walk (transect) once a month from March until October. The scheme was set up in 2011 to provide long term data on changes in bumblebee populations in Ireland. There are similar monitoring schemes across most countries in the EU and the data from all these schemes is consolidated into a single database to track changes across Europe. Bumblebees are Ireland’s most important wild pollinators and by monitoring our bumblebee populations, we can identify species who need our help the most and detect the early warning signs of a general threat to wild bees and to the wider biodiversity and environment. Currently there are approximately 90 sites/ transects being covered by volunteers annually as part of the scheme, but there is always a need for more sites to be covered. The more coverage, the more accurate the trend data will be. So who can get involved? Anybody, from beginner to expert, this is truly a “citizen science” scheme. While there are 20 species of bumblebees (and cuckoo bees) found in Ireland, on any given transect you are only likely to find 6-8 species and you will be amazed at how quickly you will learn to distinguish between them. The scheme run regular identification workshops. There are online ID guides and a brilliant id swatch which fits in a pocket and can be taken on your bee walks. There is also a facebook page and email contacts where you can get help with id questions. How do I get involved? All the information you need can be found on the National Biodiversity Data Centre website at www.biodiversityireland.ie
HOROSCOPES
LETTERS TO MY DAUGHTER by Emma Hannigan
HOMELAND RTÉ2, Thursdays 10pm
BLACK PANTHER Out now
A campaign is hoping to help Emma Hannigan’s latest book to number one after the best-selling author revealed recently that doctors have told her she hasn’t long to live. The Wicklow native took to her Facebook page to say “All good things must come to an end. The time that I knew was borrowed must be given back soon, so it seems.” The 45-year-old explained that the love of her family, friends and fans have sustained her throughout her lengthy 11-year battle with cancer. Dubray Books has also said they would donate all profits made to the Irish Cancer Society.
The seventh season is a long way from its original run with Damian Lewis, but Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin and the cast of series regulars return for another actionpacked series. At the end of last season, following an assassination attempt on her life, President Keane broke her promise by arresting 200 members of the intelligence community, including Saul Berenson. As this season begins, Carrie has left her job in the White House and moved back to DC and is living with her sister Maggie to take on the Keane administration.
It may be named Black Panther, but the film is very much an ensemble piece with enough action and social commentary to carve out a place as one of Marvel’s better standalone offerings. Returning to Wakanda to succeed his father as King, T’Challa must now protect and defend his nation, ensuring the safety of their vibranium stocks and the secrecy of their advanced technology and wealth. The film looks great and there are some brilliant action set pieces and car chases to really get the adrenaline going, without it ever veering too far into the CGI-fatigue zone.

Gathered from Jane’s notebooks, sketchbooks, and her visual diaries, these pieces span a lifetime of travel, of working alongside her husband, artist Tony O’Malley, of time spent alone, and of a clear dedication to her childhood love of putting ideas on paper.

It’s Rochdale for the cup!
A
s a fan of Bray Wanderers AFC in the League of Ireland and Rochdale AFC in England, I wasn’t expecting to get much from the weekend. Wanderers had to face the mighty Dundalk away for their RSHQLQJ GD\ ¿[WXUH LQ WKH SSE Airtricity League Premier Division, while Rochdale had the daunting task of facing Tottenham Hotspur in the FA &XS ¿IWK URXQG ,I \RXœG R྾HUHG me two draws before a ball was kicked I’d have grabbed it with both hands.Friday saw Wanderers hold Dundalk, perennial title winners (at least until Cork stopped their gallop) and Europa League group stage veterans, to a 0-0 draw, a result they fully deserved. I was working nights so didn’t make it to the game, but my luck was in with regard to Rochdale as the BBC were screening the FA Cup tie live on the Sunday afternoon, at just the time I normally get up when I’m on
The 2018 Kilkenny Rose of Tralee Launch kicked off where 19 hopefuls were briefed in the Ormonde Hotel. AROI kindly invited the Roses to sample some of their award winning flavours where the girls engaged in chat, fun and selfies! The final stop of the night was at Kilkenny’s newest venue, Brogan’s Bar. Lyn Moloney Kilkenny coordinator commented that the launch was a great success and the girls thoroughly enjoyed the whole evening. “Whilst we had 19 fantastic young hopefuls, we are still welcoming applications from any interested parties to come and join the Kilkenny Rose Experience 2018.â€? Image by Rue Photography nights.Rochdale and Spurs don’t normally mix in the same circles. It’s a long way down from the summit of the Premier League to the bottom of League One. In fact, the clubs had never met before, ever. While Spurs ZHUH ÂżJKWLQJ WKHLU ZD\ EDFN

about shocks and one looked on the cards when Ian Henderson put Dale in the lead on the stroke of half-time. My screams of delight were on a par with those screamed a few weeks back when Johnny Sexton dropped the goal in Paris.
Spurs struggled to get into the game and needed to bring Dele $OOL DQG +DUU\ .DQH R྾ WKH EHQFK WR LJQLWH D ¿JKW EDFN that eventually saw them take a 2-1 lead with Kane’s penalty just at the end. Rochdale were having none of it though. The

While Spurs face Crystal Palace in a London derby in the Premier League next weekend, Rochdale’s next match is against the MK Dons. Worlds apart, but for one day at least they were equals!
CNM marks 20 years of training natural health practitioners
www.naturopathy-uk.com Advertorial THIS year marks the twentieth anniversary of CNM (College of Naturopathic Medicine) being established in Ireland. Today, CNM is Ireland and the UK’s leading training provider in a range of natural therapies. CNM Diploma Courses include Nutrition, Herbal Medicine, Acupuncture, Natural Chef, and more. What makes CNM unique is its naturopathic approach to health, combining evidence-
based research with traditional wisdom to help the body regain balance and achieve health. Teaching is based on a number of naturopathic principles, including that: the body has innate healing energies that are stimulated if given the right conditions rather than simply suppressing symptoms, root causes of illness should be addressed in order to prevent symptoms from recurring each person is a unique combination of physical, mental, genetic, environ-
mental, and emotional drivers, and should be viewed holistically prevention is always better than cure Naturopaths are not physicians. They are educators, guiding their clients towards taking better control of their own health. Selected CNM Diploma Courses are available to study part time in Dublin, Cork or Galway, allowing students to continue earning, or to manage family commitments as they learn.
