Jellyfish warning

Swimmers and beachgoers told to be vigilant as Portuguese man o’ war washes up on beach Swimmers and beachgoers in Waterford have been warned “to be vigilant” after a Portuguese man o’ war washed up on Ardmore Strand. The Ardmore Coast Guard Unit released a statement warning people to steer clear of the Portuguese man o ’ war (pictured), the stings of which can be fatal. Portuguese man o’ war is not strictly a jellyfish and is actually a siphonophores, and can grow to lengths of 40 metres. In a statement, the Search Unit said: “(It) may still be able to inflict a serious sting to any person, child or even a dog that comes into contact with it. “Please give it a wide berth and keep children and your dogs well away from it.” Earlier in the summer, swimmers were also told to keep an eye out for for the Lion’s Mane jellyfish (right) while bathing. and can be up to one metre long, have 150 long tentacles on the bottom which can give off a nasty sting that is known for great pain, nausea, cramps and headaches, according to the HSE. The Lion’s Mane is the largest species of jellyfish in the world and can sting even after they’ve died with reports of several of them being washed up on Irish coasts in recent weeks. Meanwhile, swarms of Moon Jellies have also been reported along our shores. “There are nine species of jellyfish normally found in Irish waters…some with mild stings such as the Moon Jellies, and some with quite severe stings such as the Lion’s Mane Jellyfish,” Pat Ó Súilleabháin General Manager of SEA LIFE Aquarium in Bray told the Waterford Today. “Recent years have seen increase sightings of swarms of jellyfish, not just locally, but also globally.”

04 | news in brief Housing protest People Before Profit (PBP) Waterford protested recently to highlight the ongoing housing crisis in Waterford. Commenting at the march, PBP Local Representative Una Dunphy said: “This is a topic, that resonates with everybody, as could be seen from the interaction with people on the street and beyond. “We all know of people paying unaffordable rents without a chance of affording any deposit for their own home. We also know of overcrowded family homes with no prospect of new builds being in their income bracket, and an absence of social housing to meet this gap, as should happen.”

An amateur photographer who captured a series of photographs of a white-tailed eagle on a bird table in Co Waterford says it was a “once-in-a-lifetime” chance that he was so chuffed to have taken. Gary Tobin, a healthcare assistant and father-of-three, had been hoping to get a glimpse of the largest resident bird species in Ireland while he was out taking pictures recently. “I had just pulled over in

the car and the next thing I heard was a loud noise behind me. I turned around and could see a white-tailed eagle had landed on a bird table in a garden about 30m away,” Gary said. “Its talons had made a noise as it landed on the roof, otherwise I would never have heard it. “I had been hoping to get a shot of one of these birds, as I love photography and I love animals. But seeing one so close was like winning the

lotto for me.” The white-tailed eagle is a huge bird, with a wingspan of over two metres and a body length of around one metre. Twenty-one white-tailed eagle chicks were released into the wild across Munster earlier this month, as part of of a reintroduction programme in Ireland. The birds were released at sites on the Shannon Estuary, at Lough Derg, in Co Waterford and in Killarney National Park.

Ray heaps praise on Greenway

Ray D’Arcy paid a visit to sunny Waterford recently for a well-deserved staycation and was full of praise for what we had to offer. The veteran radio presenter returned to his Radio 1 Show following a three-week break from the show, with Kathryn Thomas and Brenda Donoghue stepping in to take over the airwaves while he was away with his wife Jenny Kelly and their two kids; son Tom and daughter Kate. A listener asked Ray if he had been cycling down in Clonakilty for the weeks prior, as in typical Irish fashion, someone thought they had spotted the radio DJ out and about. “No I wasn’t,” the presenter replied. “There are a lot of people who look like me middle-aged men, pale, balding, five foot eight. “I was down in Waterford, we were on the greenway and it’s just such an amazing, free amenity,” he said. “The thing that gives me hope for the future of this country is the amount of money that’s being put into free amenities like greenways around the country.”

Deliveroo for the Deise to create 50 new jobs

food delivery company Deliveroo has launched its service in Waterford, creating 50 delivery jobs in the process. This means that locals can now order food from a range of restaurants and convenience stores in the local area. Deliveroo is an app and website that enables locals to check out the very best food in their area. The food delivery app is already working with high Street favourites like KFC, Subway, Wowburger, Four Star and Eddie Rockets along with the best independent restaurants like Delice Peri Peri, Thai Town Street Food and Crazy Vegetable - with more popular restaurants like Papa John’s and Supermacs going live on Deliveroo in the coming weeks. The food delivery company will continue to add new local restaurants, takeaways and convenience stores to the platform over the coming months. In celebration of the launch in Waterford, Deliveroo are offering new customers Є10 off their first order when they sign up to the platform and use the code IREFOOD10 at checkout. This is an offer for new cus-

tomers only, with a minimum spend of Є15 or more. What’s more, for the next five weeks, all customers can enjoy 20% their order when they spend Є20 or more. The launch will be a major boost to small restaurant businesses across Waterford who will be able to reach new customers and grow their restaurant businesses through offering delivery. Working with Deliveroo increases restaurants’ sales as they can reach a wider range of customers. This enables restaurants to expand their businesses, often employing more staff, broadening their menus and lengthening opening times as a result. Initially, Deliveroo will be looking for up to 50 people in Waterford to become riders over the coming months. Those who work as riders will be able to work when they want and where they want, delivering food and groceries to customers’ doors in as little as 20 minutes. To keep riders safe while out on the road, the company offers all riders free accident and injury insurance to ensure all riders are protected.

Inland Fisheries Ireland has announced funding for four projects in Waterford. The sponsorship funding was granted to: • Waterford Sports Partnership, which held a ‘Come and Try Fishing’ event on the River Blackwater, Cappoquin, Waterford. • Irish Federation of Sea Anglers, which will hold the ‘Rinnashark Youth Training Day 2021’ in Passage East, Waterford. • Irish Federation of Sea Anglers, which will hold a ‘Tramore/ Waterford Youth Training Day’ to develop awareness and increase participation in sea angling. • Irish Federation of Sea Anglers, which will hold the ‘Munster CAST angling pathway 2021’ coaching programme in Woodstown, Waterford. Inland Fisheries Ireland’s

Sponsorship Programme received proposals from community groups, clubs, associations and other bodies earlier in the year. Making the announcement, Suzanne Campion, Head of Business Development at Inland Fisheries Ireland, said: “More than 320,000 adults in Ireland already enjoy angling and 18% of those who haven’t tried it before are likely to try it in the future. “This demonstrates that there’s significant potential for sustainable angling, which could bring many health and economic benefits to the people of Waterford.” “Through Inland Fisheries Ireland’s Sponsorship Programme, we want to encourage people to try angling sustainably and we also want to encourage more beginners,” she added.

Ireland Moving Forward

JOBS FOCUSED RECOVERY The EU has committed to reducing emissions by 55% by 2030. This ambitious target can be achieved if we as policymakers remove the barriers and provide proper incentives.

The new CAP for 2023-27 has been finalised in Brussels, with €10.7 billion secured for Ireland. Now, the national implementation plan must maximize the benefits for our farmers.

As the Parliament’s lead MEP for UK trade matters, including the implementation of the Protocol, I’m working to highlight the economic opportunities that exist for businesses on both sides of the border.

The Irish economy was strong when Covid-19 hit, and Ireland’s Economic Recovery Plan and National Recovery and Resilience Plan will drive a green, digital and jobs-led recovery.

GAA plays host Dublin-based Waterford to camp for ASD children senator objects to housing plan All pix by Noel Browne

DUBLIN-based Fianna Fáil senator Lorraine Clifford-Lee objected to a development of 46 new homes in Waterford because of concerns it would have a negative impact on the number of Irish language speakers in the area. Ms CliffordLee argued in her objection to the planning application that Waterford City and County Council would be failing in its duty to protect the Irish language if it granted permission for the construction of 46 houses in Mweelnahorna, Ring in Gaeltacht na nDéise, according to the a report in the Irish Independent. “Although there is a housing need in the area, I do not believe that this development satisfies the requirements of the local community,” the former

Dublin Fingal general election candidate wrote. Shinebright, a special purpose vehicle of developers’ John Crean and Tony O’Neill’s Peppard Investments, was refused planning permission [week of Aug 23] for a development comprising twelve 4-bed detached homes, two 4-bed semi-detached houses, 28 3-bed semi-detached homes and four 2-bed elderly units. The developers intend to appeal the council decision to An Bord Pleanála. In her letter, Ms Clifford-Lee wrote that her grandparents had left the Gaeltacht na nDéise in 1955 and that she therefore had a special interest in the area and that her family still have strong connections there.

“I feel strongly that permission should not be given for this development. Although I am living in Dublin, I am part of the Gaeltacht na nDéise diaspora,” she wrote. She said that the local authority had a statutory duty to protect the language and noted the Gaeltacht na nDeise was the only Gaeltacht area in the country to show an increase in the number of daily Irish language speakers in the last Census. “It is certain that a housing development of this size will have a negative impact on the number of daily Irish speakers in the area. Along with that, there is a direct link between the number of daily Irish speakers and the special cultural and linguistic heritage of the area. “There is no system in place to access the language competency of the householders,” she said.

Walsh Park was a hive of activity recently as CLG Port Láirge, in partnership with Deise Óg, Waterford Sports Partnership and WASSA (Waterford Autism Social & Sports Action) hosted a first camp for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Gavin Whelan writes. Running over three days, the camp was a real treat for the children, who beamed at the opportunity of getting into Walsh Park. This is the very first camp of it’s kind hosted

by Waterford GAA, who were delighted with the response. Reflecting on the event, Rachel Sinnott (Community Development Officer with Waterford Sports Partnership) said: “A few children came onto the grass and eyes beaming, couldn’t believe that I’m actually standing on the pitch in Walsh Park, which is fantastic. A first for some children so for them just even to get out and try a few new things, say we would have had fun games, they’d be looking

461 windfarms emails sent to councillor A Waterford councillor said she was astonished by a barrage of objections to plans for an off-shore wind energy scheme. Green Party Councillor Susan Gallagher revealed she received just a single email supporting her position on wind power but was swamped by 461 email objections. Councillor Gallagher said that while she expected some objections to onshore wind energy proposals, she was astonished by the number of objections to offshore wind projects - with some opponents demanding that the wind turbines be located at least 22km out to sea. Ms Gallagher said Ireland needed to publicly clarify its future energy plans in light of the climate change challenge and explain to householders the stark choices the country faces. Many householders are confused about such renewable energy projects or have adopted a stance based on misleading information, she said.

“What interested me was the number of people opposed to any form of offshore. I had expected a lot more would oppose on-shore wind. That surprised me, actually,” she told WLRFM recently. She said a lot of people had genuinely held concerns about such wind energy projects and needed reassurance about them. “I have asked a few energy engineering experts about the size of these turbines. I have received emails asking that all turbines be at least 22km out from the coast. The problem that we have in Waterford, is that there is very deep water beyond that.” It comes as an Irish-Spanish joint venture is planning three offshore electricity generating fields that will cost up to €6.5bn. Local player DP Energy is joining forces with Spanish giant Iberdrola to build three offshore wind farms around the Irish coast with capacity to generate 3,000 megawatts (mw) of electricity.

at picking up hurleys and then playing a bit of football too so a mix of everything, it’s fantastic.” The support and encouragement from WASSA was a key driving force in the project, which will hopefully become an annual event. Bernie Murphy of WASSA said they jumped at the opportunity: “We’re delighted to be a part of it and we were delighted to be approached by Waterford GAA to help out and to help organise it.”

Food hub gets a new €1m revamp

Musgrave MarketPlace has just unveiled a new Food Emporium at its outlet in Waterford, following a €1m upgrade. The transformation of the Kilbarry Road Junction branch into a state-of-the-art Food Emporium forms part of a €13.6m total investment in the Musgrave MarketPlace Food Emporium concept to date, as it continues to modernise wholesale on the island of Ireland, the company said. This branch unveiling in Waterford follows branch upgrades in Cork, Limerick, Galway, Dublin’s Ballymun and Robinhood, Duncrue in Belfast and Derry. The upgrade of the Waterford Food Emporium features a range of new and innovative updates to assist foodservice and retail customers access the information they need. Autumn migration….. Swallows getting ready to leave our shores (Photo Justin Ivory) September spells back to school and the start of autumn with cool, damp mornings where evoking melancholic and bittersweet feelings for the brevity of summer and the prelude to shortening days, cooler temperatures and the dark, damp and decay of winter. It is a month where we can get every kind of weather from spectacularly hot and sunny days to gales and heavy showers (sure isn’t that every day in Ireland!). September is also a time of great change and activity in the natural world and has to be one of my favourite months. Below is a small selection of highlights to look out for during this wonderfully varied month. • Mother Nature has her shelves full to brim with her harvest produce. Trees and shrubs are laden with fruits, nuts and berries including blackberries, beech mast and acorns to name but a few. • It is a great time of year to see and get close to Red Squirrels as they search for fruits to eat immediately and nuts to store going to great lengths to hide them. So intent are they on this activity it is possible to get close and watch them for several minutes without their noticing you. • Just like the squirrels, this is the best month to see our shiest and most colourful member of the crow family – the Jay, as they collect and hide acorns to see them through the winter. • The miracle of migration is in full flow this month as our summer visitors such as Swallows, Martins and Swifts gather and leave our shores to head south for the winter. Meanwhile Ducks, Geese and Waders that have spent the summer breeding in the Arctic and northern latitudes arrive in to spend the winter. Offshore there are huge numbers of seabirds including Petrels, Shearwaters and Skuas. That is just the tip of the iceberg of what is happening during September. So, don’t hibernate just yet. Get out there and enjoy the show!

AT the end of the Irish War of Independence, Dublin signed an unsatisfactory treaty with London, that amongst other things, required oaths of allegiance to the British Empire. To many this was a price worth paying, but for others it was impossible. Very quickly, in 1922 the country collapsed into a cruel civil war that split organisations like Sinn Fein and the IRA, local communities, and families. Drawing on completely new sources, one of Ireland’s most brilliant historians shows how important this tragic war was for understanding the Ireland that we are living in now.

THE latest trailer for RTE’s new gangster drama, Kin, really does up the ante in terms of the action that’s about to unfold in Irish homes. After the first teaser introduced us to the frosty relationship between gang leaders Frank (Aidan Gillen) and Eamon (Ciarán Hinds), the new trailer sees the fallout from their escalating feud as a turf war develops. Much like Love/Hate, the violence looks brutal, with shootouts, fist-fights, backstabbing, frontstabbing, sidekicks and, well, you can guess the rest. Visceral, that’s the word, aye.

A YOUNG man, Jimmy Cullen, returns to Co Cavan after seven years of exile to make peace with his dying father. A condition in his will reveals that he must not be buried on a wet day or Jimmy and his brother will be disinherited. This is clearly a challenge in Cavan. In the sodden county of Philip Doherty’s film, the conditions may be impossible to satisfy. In this bold, blackly comic debut, Cavan native Philip Doherty captures the austerity of the county and the claustrophobic, often surreal texture of smalltown life . . . and a hell of a lot of rain, thus the conceit.

The British social-critical director of I, Daniel Blake and The Wind That Shakes the Barley, Ken Loach, delivers another scathing indictment of our economic system, the gig economy. Here, a struggling family man tries to turn his life around by working in package delivery but gets caught in a spiral of debt instead. The workers are freelancers who own their trucks and are made fully responsible for packages until they reach their respective recipients. Climate crisis not climate change

C

limate change seems to have made its way back into the headlines in recent weeks. Rightly so something so important should never have been off our radars, but has been relegated down the news order during the last 18 months because of the pandemic. Not that it makes pleasant reading seeing headlines like ‘Dublin to be submerged by 2050’ or other prophecies of that ilk; the implications of climate change are brutally sobering. Perhaps there’s a danger though of the severity of the message leading to apathy, strange as that may sound. If something is portrayed as so hopeless a cause and so inevitable to happen, then people may just switch off and enjoy the ride until we crash into the wall. The possibility of reversing climate change is a ship that has sailed, as far as I’m concerned. It is already happening and will get worse in the coming decades.

But there is hope. We just need to change the narrative from trying to stop climate change to focusing on mitigating the effects of it and learning how to adapt and live with it. Greta Thunberg summed this up well in some social media posts last week, to mark the third anniversary of her school strike. We need to stop talking about ‘climate change’ and start using the words ‘climate crisis’, because that’s exactly what the situation is, a crisis. Crisis focuses attention better and forces action. The Covid-19 pandemic was - and remains a crisis, and swift action followed. As I scientist I have been impressed by how quickly the scientific cavalry rode to the rescue during the Covid pandemic. Vaccines were developed, approved, manufactured and distributed with lightning-quick speed. Everyone – scientists, politicians, businesses – were pulling in the same direction, and when everyone is aligned like this progress can be rapid. Imagine if this approach was

applied to climate change. Not to trying to stop it, but to trying to offset the worst damage that is to be dished out.

Progress could be quick, effective and lasting. We just need to see a collective will to tackle the issue, like we did with Co-

vid. It’s quite likely that what science will offer up as gamechangers in the climate debate won’t be things that we are fa-

miliar with yet. Electric cars will give way to hydrogen cars, which is a much more viable long-term alternative to petrol or diesel. I changed my car this year and went for a petrol model, having done some research I was shocked to discover that over its lifetime an electric car I was looking at would do more damage to the planet than the petrol one I bought, when you factor in things like the sourcing and disposal of the batteries. Likewise with renewable energies. Wind and solar will only go so far and the ultimate solution is something like nuclear fusion, the elusive good cousin to nuclear fission. Fusion will be everything fission isn’t, namely cheap, safe, unlimited and clean. We just need to pump the funding into making it become reality. So, time to pivot. Fear needs to be replaced by hope. Time to stop chasing the impossibility of stopping climate change and embrace the challenge of finding workable solutions that will help us live in a changed world. - Brian Quigley

Do your homework on accommodation As the new college year approaches, the search begins for countless students to find accommodation for the coming year — while at all times taking Covid-19 into account. While students put together criteria for their search, such as location, living space and cost, there is often one important criteria that is overlooked. For those students engaging with an estate agent in their search for accommodation, it is imperative that they ensure that the agent is licensed by the Property Services Regulatory Authority (PSRA). All Property Service Providers (Letting Agents, Auctioneers, Estate Agents and Management Agents) operating in the Republic of Ireland must hold a PSRA licence. Licensed Property Service Providers are regulated by the PSRA, ensuring that the consumer is protected. The individual licence is a credit card size licence, which contains the licensee name, photographic identification and a unique 6 or 12 digit

PSRA licence number, always beginning with a double zero. In recent years, reports to the PSRA regarding bogus letting agents increase at this time of year as new bogus agents appear, targeting the large number of students seeking accommodation. These bogus agents often set up online, advertising accommodation and attempting to extract financial payments from prospective tenants. In some instances, these bogus agents will claim to have a valid PSRA licence number. When using a property service provider, clients should ask to see the property service provider’s licence and note the licence number. You can then check this number on the PSRA Register of Licensed Property Services Providers to ensure that the licence is not only valid and in date, but that the provider’s details match those on the Register. The Register can be found on the PSRA’s website, www.psr. ie.

Springboard can give you lift off

More than 10,000 free and subsidised higher education places have been announced under the Springboard+ 2021 and Human Capital Initiative (HCI) Pillar 1 initiatives. The courses are available to people throughout the county, and will be delivered by institutions across the country. Springboard+ provides free courses for people who are unemployed, people who have taken time out of work or education to raise their families or care for loved ones, or people who want to upskill. Now in its tenth year, over

75,000 people have benefitted from Springboard+ to date. Courses under the HCI Pillar 1 programme are aimed at graduates and offer incentivised places for them to reskill in areas of skills shortage and emerging technologies. These are being run alongside, and complementary to, the Springboard+ offerings. For those in employment, the Government will fund 90% of the cost of a Springboard+ or HCI Pillar 1 course. The programmes are managed by the Higher Education Authority on behalf of the Department of

Education and Skills. Launching the programme, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris, said “As we emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic, we will need to ensure that people have the skills they need. “Springboard+ and the graduate conversion courses under the Human Capital Initiative provide a targeted response to skills needs, enabling people to upskill and reskill in areas of critical importance which have come to the fore as a result of Covid-19, including Cyberse-

are skills shortages. “We work closely with employers across the country to ensure that the courses that are on offer are in-line with industry needs and best practices. “We are delighted that this year, 90% of courses will be delivered in a flexible manner – which will allow more people to engage with the courses which may have been inaccessible to them before, because of work or family commitments, or because of where they live. “This means people can, effectively, participate in courses anywhere in Ireland.”

€14,000

That’s how much it costs to live and go to college away from home The cost of college will increse to up to €14,000 this year for students living away from home, according to a new survey. After a year of studying from home, which kept a lid on outgoings, the return to campus next month will students and their families in the pocket. High rents and rising food prices are key contributors to the projected hike in living costs. Details of the Student Cost of Living Guide, estimate that students moving to Dublin will need €1,539 a month, or €13,827 for the full academic year. The figure includes the

€3,000- a-year contribution charged by publicly-funded third-level colleges, although most SUSI grant-holders are exempt or partially exempt from this fee. The total cost of up to €14,000 represents a sharp rise on the €12,171 students were expected to pay going into the 2019-2020 academic year. That was the last time when they were heading to college under ‘normal’ circumstances before the pandemic kicked in and caused chaos, resulting in long months of remote learning. While many families saved money as a result of Covid lockdowns, others, where

members lost their jobs, have been struggling on the PUP welfare payment and will have little or no reserves to call on. The estimate for the upcoming year was significantly lower for students who will not require accommodation in Dublin, such as those who will be able to live at home, dropping to just over €6,600 for the period. The average monthly rent cost, calculated based on the private rental market, is estimated to be €585, however, TU Dublin note average monthly rates for private student accommodation is much higher, at €940, while Digs (living with a family) is slightly less, at €540.

Spike in calls to SVP ahead of new term The Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) took almost 300 calls every day last week from parents struggling with backto-school and college costs. Calls for help with school costs are up 10% compared to previous years. SVP says the level of demand underlines the need for much greater investment in the education system to ensure that all children and young people can access and participate in educa-

tion on an equal footing. The charity says many of the calls received relate to requests for financial help with parental contributions, schoolbooks, digital equipment, and help with the cost of school uniforms. This pressure is coming at a time when many families are struggling with rising utility costs. Members of SVP are particularly concerned about the num-

ber of calls they are receiving from worried parents in relation to the cost of iPads and tablets. Many of these devices cost between €600 and €800 and are impossible for struggling families to afford. When schools had to make the switch to online learning during school closures, SVP provided significant support to low-income families struggling with the cost of digital devices and internet costs.

Please come back Leaving, all is forgiven

F

amiliarity breeds contempt, they say, and that is how many of us appear to regard the Leaving Certificate. Too hard, say some. Too soft, cry others. Too broad, too specific, too sweeping, too exclusive. But it is also said of old friends that we only truly appreciate them when they’re gone. And in the past two Covidhaunted years I have come to realise the value of our old friend the Leaving. Not perfect, but not too bad at all. The alternatives have involved some form of calculated grades; assessment by teachers based on past results, class work (sometimes from online classes) and projects. The teachers’ recommendations have been reviewed by an impartial examiner and adjusted to take account of past performance

Michael Wolsey and national averages. This year we gave students the choice of assessment or sitting the usual exam; in fact we allowed them to do both and go with whichever gave the best result. Obviously, many students like this belt and braces approach but it is not a good model for the future. Students like the each-way bet but teachers know it must inevitably lead to a devaluation of the Leaving Cert and a

reduction in the standard of our third level intake. The Leaving is a blunt instrument for determining a young person’s future but the alternatives are worse. Teacher projections open the possibility of bias and, regardless of rules against canvassing, that will always be the case in a small country like ours. How could it be otherwise when a teacher is grading the son of a neighbour or the daughter of a good friend? Project work is less open to bias and should, perhaps, weigh more heavily in our exam calculations. But projects have their own unfairness, since they favour children whose parents are willing and able to help and schools with better facilities. The Leaving Cert undoubtedly suits some kids more than others. It can favour one-off

Looking for a tutor? School Is Easy is here to help you Advertorial As we battle to cope with the restrictions imposed by Covid-19 regulations, home-based learning has taken on a new importance. Many parents who want their children to enjoy the benefits of one-to-one tuition are, nevertheless, nervous about having a stranger in their home or sending young students to a tuition centre. School is Easy (SIE) can solve that problem. We can offer one-to-one or group grinds for Primary, Junior Certificate or Leaving Certificate school students at a time that works for you and your family. We offer the following subjects, from Primary to Secondary to Specialist Third Level courses: Irish/Gaelige, English, Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, French, German, Spanish, History, Geography, Business Studies, Economics, Design and Technology, Music, and Physical Education . Going to university and dreading the college exams? No problem, we have skilled and experienced tutors to help every student.

We provide safe, online tutorials that are recorded so that your child can future reference any topic covered. When you work with SIE, you will get nothing but the best. All of our tutors have formal education, classroom experience and a passion for teaching. For senior subjects we use college and university instructors with a Masters degree. The choice is yours when it comes to the style of tutoring and our range of subjects is broad. We don’t use generic tutoring lessons. We customise each programme based on the student’s needs, goals and capacity and we take care to match students with the right tutors. We are easy to work with. We screen tutors for you. We identify learning deficiencies and we get results . Our certified tutors will provide an initial assessment, if you need it, to ascertain your child’s requirements. Call us today on 01 556 3553 to book a consulation. We will be delighted to match you with a tutor.

excellence over consistency and sometimes allows flair to trump hard work. It’s not a perfect system but it has served the country well enough. It is fair and its rules are clear. The system is not broken and we should follow the advice of the old cliché and be in no rush to fix it. So as we begin a new school under conditions that are starting to look a little more like normality, my hope is that it will end with the return of the Leaving Certificate we know and ... well, love ... sort of. Come next Spring I hope we’ll say: Welcome back old Leaving Cert friend. You can be a pain in the ass sometimes, but we’ve missed you.

Firms get €3,000 for apprentices

Employers are entitled to a financial incentive of €3,000 to take on apprentices under a new scheme announced recently. Minister for Higher Education and Innovation Simon Harris has expanded the model to include more sectors of the economy as it recovers from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. “Over 18,000 people are currently undertaking an apprenticeship across a wide range of occupations from electrical, construction and engineering roles to healthcare, information technology and financial services,” he said. “Our ambition is to see that number grow and the Government provided funding for this incentive for employers.”

The number of people registering for an apprenticeship has risen from 3,153 in 2015 to a total of 6,177 in 2019. Apprentices are employed by their sponsoring company and apprenticeship provides a robust educational pathway while giving apprentices the chance to build on workplace skills and experience throughout their programme. Depending on the programme, apprenticeships take from 2-4 years to complete and currently cover from level 5-9 of the National Framework of Qualifications. Minister Harris said it was an exciting option for people of different ages and backgrounds and for career changers, as well as school leavers. Mr Harris said these

apprentices will play a key part in Ireland’s recovery and the country’s future. Meanwhile, the Department for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, has also launched a world-first in education for Ireland, with the introduction of a degree level qualification in recruitment. Developed by the National Recruitment Federation (NRF), the three-year Honours Degree in Recruitment Practice involves the apprenticeship learning model. The recruitment executive, whether a school-leaver, new recruit or existing employee is retained by a recruitment agency and learns on the job and through online tutorials, while attending college one day a week.

And today is the Anniversary Of the day that you went away And I’m standing here at your graveside And believe me when I say. You’ll never be forgotten And every year I’ll shed a tear But it’s only because I Love you And wish you were still here. - Loved and missed by your son Keith & partner Liz. Sad is the heart that loved you Silent are the tears that fall, Living our lives without you Nanny Is the hardest part of all, As we held your hand that evening We knew we had to part With the kind and loving Nanny whom we Loved with all our heart. In loving memory of Ann Martin, late of 39, Belmount Heights, Ferrybank, Waterford whose 5th anniversary occurs on the 17th of August. Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning’s hush I am the swift uplifting rush, of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry I am not there; I did not die. - From your loving daughter Jacqui & son-in-law David

We cannot get over losing you Craig And don’t even want to try We will always keep you in our hearts Until the day we die. We think of you always We talk about you still You haven’t been forgotten You know you never will. Those we love don’t go away They walk beside us everyday Unseen, unheard, but always near Still loved, still missed, still very dear. xxxxxxxx - Always in our thoughts , forever in our hearts Mam, Jessica & Steve o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore of you to obtain for me my request. The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so you are the saint of miracles. O gentle and loving St Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, intercede for me and whisper my prayer into the ear of the sweet Infant Jesus who loved to linger in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will be yours. K.G.

Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. E.M.

In loving memory of Jane Kelly, late of Hennessy’s Road, whose anniversary occurs on 1st September. Mam, A smile for all, a heart of gold, One of the best this world could hold, Never selfish, always kind, These are the memories you left behind, To hear your voice, to see your smile, To sit and talk with you a while, To be together in the same old way, Would be my dearest wish today, Though absent you are always near, Still loved, still missed every single year. - Always remembered and loved, your son Paul If roses grow in heaven Lord, Please pick a bunch for me, Place them in my mams arms, And hell her they’re from me, Tell her that I love and miss her, And when she turns to smile, Place a kiss upon her cheek, And hold her for a while. Remembering her is easy, I do it every day, But there’s an ache within my hearts, That will never go away. - Sadly missed by your daughter Margaret, grandchildren and great grandchildren Mam, I thought of you today, But that is nothing new, I thought of you yesterday, And the day before that too, I will think of you tomorrow, As I will my whole life through, For the day I fail to think of you, Is the day God takes me too. - Love and miss you every day, from your daughter Mary, son in law Gerard, Forget you Mam, I never will, For in my heart, I love you still,

Lots of things have happened Mam, Since you passed away, Things you could have shared with us, If God had let you stay, But a heart of gold stopped beating, Two smiling eyes took rest, It is true when it is said, God only takes the best, I know all my life I will miss you, For you meant all the world to me, I have many precious memories, That others cannot see, They are mine to keep forever, From which I will never part, I’ll hold them close to me, Locked inside my heart, In Heaven one day I’ll find you, And all the hurt will go, Then I’ll put my arms around you, And say I love you so. - Loved and missed by your son Joseph, daughter-in-law. No longer in our lives to share, But in our hearts you are always there, A silent thought, A quiet prayer, For a special Dad In God’s care. - From Sabrina and Aidan A tribute of love to a nanny so dear, So close to our hearts each day of the year, We will always have memories to cherish and hold Of a wonderful nanny, more precious than gold. - From your grandchildren Jane and John.
