Stadium booked for vaccine centre WITH the first round of vaccination completed in Waterford’s hospitals and care homes, the city and county is gearing up for mass vaccination in the fight against Covid-19. A Mass Vaccination Centre (MVC) is to be set up at the WIT Arena to administer the AstraZeneca vaccine, the first batches of which will arrive next week. This vaccines is easier to store than the Pfizer snd Modena vaccines which have been used in care homes and hospitals. The location for the MVC - on the city’s by-pass at Carriganore - was revealed by Waterford Fine Gael Senator John Cummins. He said: “I have heard a lot of rumours and speculation circulating recently that Waterford was not part of HSE plans for a mass vaccination centre, therefore I felt it was important to bring clarity to the situation because misinformation is very unhelpful in the current climate. “Naturally I have impressed upon the Tánaiste the suitability

of WIT Arena to house the South East mass vaccination centre but ultimately this is an operational matter for the HSE and the Vaccine Rollout Taskforce. “Thankfully the availability of a facility of WIT Arena’s scale, quality and location on the city’s bypass made it an ideal choice”. The public will be vaccinated in order of seniority, starting with those over 85. Senator Cummins said it was not yet known when the centre at the WIT Arena would become operational - “naturally a lot will depend on the availability of vaccine supply”. “The rollout of the Covid-19 vaccination programme is a major logistical operation, the like of which the country has not seen before,” he said. But Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on Health, the Waterford TD David Cullinane, said there has been a lack of detail and clarity on the vaccine rollout. He accused Health Minister Stephen Donnelly of “spoofing” on dates and targets.

Council sets pace in race to provide more houses
WATERFORD Council has set a headline for the country by exceeding its target for refurbishing homes and bringing them back into use as social housing. Other councils are being urged to follow Waterford’s integrated approach to the housing problem. The City and County Council has refurbished and re-let 93 homes under the 2020 Voids Stimulus Programme. Housing. Minister Darragh O’Brien thanked the council for its work. “I asked local authorities to ensure that all homes were refurbished and, at the very least, allocated by the end of the year,” he explained. “Waterford City and County Council responded with great enthusiasm and their speedy uptake in the scheme is to be highly commended.” Waterford’s Fianna Fáil TD, Minister of State Mary Butler, saluted the achievement. “Waterford City and County Council, Director of Housing Ivan Grimes and his team are to be congratulated for responding with such enthusiasm,” she said. She pointed to an additional local economic benefit with employment generated for sub-contractors such as builders, carpenters, painters, plumbers and electricians. Waterford’s Fine Gael senator John Cummins also congratu-
lated the local authority and suggested that higher targets should be set for all counties. “If this progress can be achieved in an urban centre like Waterford city it can be done in the other urban areas,” he said. “I would call on the Department to set targets for local authorities to make better use of this scheme, which will deliver more housing solutions across the country.” Senator Cummins said Waterford City and County Council had been able to reduce the number of families in emergency accommodation by 93% in the period 2017 to 2020 and individual homeless figures by 55%, despite presentations effectively doubling in the same period. “It was achieved due to a combination of factors including a commitment to a collaborative and integrated approach to homelessness from the local authority, the HSE, NGOs and approved housing bodies via the establishment of an integrated homeless hub in a single location in the city where all agencies now work alongside one another,” he said. “It is my opinion that approved housing bodies and local authorities must think outside the box to deliver units and we cannot continue to have this utopian view that the only way to do this is through council direct builds..”
Sales down as 1,000 homes change hands THE NUMBER of house sales fell by more than 20% last year, according to the GeoView Residential Buildings Report . The report gives an accurate snapshot of housing activity for the year to the end of November. It finds that in Waterford: *There were 1,018 residential property transactions in the twelve months to November, 15.2% of which were new dwellings. *The average residential property price was €205,501, which was lower than the national average of €294,184 . *382 residential address points in the county were added to the GeoDirectory database in 2020 .
*There were 352 buildings under construction across the county in December 2020 . *The residential vacancy rate in Waterford was 2.9% in December 2020, lower than the national average of 4.6%. In the twelve months to November there were a total of 35,542 residential property transactions across the State, a drop of 21.1% compared to the previous year. A decline was recorded in every county, The GeoDirectory database is the most comprehensive address database of dwellings in the Republic of Ireland., jointly established by An Post and Ordnance Survey Ireland .

Who is worth more than a nurse?
R
TE paid Ryan T u b r i d y €495,000 in 2019. A senior staff nurse in a public hospital earns €48,736 a year. In 2019, RTE paid €450,00 for the services of Ray Darcy. A primary school teacher earns around €40,000 a year. RTE’s latest figures show it paid €320,000 for the services of Miriam O’Callaghan. A fully-qualified garda earns a flat rate of €48,754 a year, which may rise to €52,482 after 19 years of service. These three broadcasters were near the top of RTE’s best-paid list in 2019. Brendan O’Connor, who didn’t make the top ten in 2017, had risen to No 8 within two years, earning €220,000 for the year. Bryan Dobson, who also failed to make the top ten in 2017, had reached No 9 with earnings of €209,282. An enlisted soldier with the Defence Forces earns a basic wage of just under €30,000 after three years service. I could find greater pay inequalities if I were to compare
“I’ll soon be back dancing the tango again after this!” said 99 year old Paddy Mooney from Bunmahon and resident at Dunabbey House in Dungarvan upon receiving his Covid Vaccine there this weekend from HSE/SECH vaccination team members Kelly Whelan and Liz Carey
Michael Wolsey the salaries of health workers and other key public servants with those of, say, top sports people or the CEOs of major private companies. There would be an even bigger gap if I looked overseas and made the comparison with footballers in England, tennis players in Australia or movie actors in California. But we, the Irish taxpayers, do not fund the salaries of English footballers, Hollywood actors or the CEOs of Irish companies. We do fund the salaries of nurses, teachers, soldiers, gardaí and broadcasters for RTE. Ultimately we are their employers and we appear to value their services very differently. I do not mean to disparage,
in any way, the ability of these highly-paid broadcasters. They are good at their jobs and they also work hard. Many hours of work go into producing the hour of radio broadcasting Ryan Tubridy provides for RTE each weekday and many more hours are needed to get out his Late Late Show for television. And it is not just a matter of work-rate but of talent, although often it is a talent for doing things that are of no great importance.
Ray Darcy’s main function is to chatter pleasantly on radio for a couple of hours each afternoon. I suspect it comes naturally to the man - but most of us would find it very difficult. Mr Darcy has an unusual talent but what it provides, nevertheless, is two daily hours of pleasant chat. Is that really more valuable than the services of a nurse fighting the Covid pandemic? Does anyone believe it is ten times more valuable? That’s the
difference in the money we, the taxpayers, award them. Whenever the RTE pay scales are published there is always some public protest, followed, usually, by a pledge from the broadcaster that there will be a curb on pay increases and an attempt to bring the salaries a little closer to what is normal in the rest of society. RTE says it reduced the earnings of its highest-paid presenters by 15% last year. Maybe so, but I won’t cheer until I’ve seen the published proof. These
latest figures are for the three years to 2019 and there is no sign of any real reduction. Only two of its top ten earners received less in 2019 than in 2017. Sports commentator George Hamilton fell out of the top ten list and Joe Duffy, the third biggest earner, got €392,494, a reduction of €6,244 on his 2017 earnings. That puts a value on Joe’s services that is 13 times more than the pay of a soldier in the Defence Forces. I don’t expect RTE to suddenly slash the payments to its top broadcasters. Even if there was a willingness to implement such cuts, contractual arrangements would make that very difficult. So I don’t imagine that anytime soon I will be seeing the presenters of Prime Time paid on the same scale as nurses or chat show hosts getting the wages of primary school teachers. But it would be good to see some genuine movement in that direction by the time these salary figures are next published - or at least before RTE next looks for a licence increase or a new government subvention.

Children join clean-up fight against litter CHILDREN from six Waterford schools are taking a stand against litter through a programme run by an environmental group, Voice. The programme, which is being supported by the city and county council, is called Picker Pals. It equips children with packs containing everything children need to go litter-picking. Each child goes on a litterpicking adventure with their family and reports back to their classmates on their activity. St Mary’s Primary School in Dungarvan is seeing the benefits. “The girls in our school are really enjoying being involved in the Picker Pals programme,” said principal Fiona Fitzgerald. “They are very keen to play their part in looking after their
local environment and are having great fun with their families while doing so.” The drive comes as a new survey shows Waterford city has risen to eight among 37 towns and cities rated for lack of litter. It is rated “clean to European norm” and is the cleanest of the main cities. Ballybeg, however, has slipped to “moderately littered” in 22nd position. Kilkenny retained top spot, ahead of Killarney and Ennis. The IBAL (Irish Business Against Litter) survey is conducted by An Taisce . Its report says: “Covid has not impacted on the cleanliness of our cleanest city, Waterford. It praises the Waterford Walls festival as “a wonderfully creative way to take the bare look off’ walls / buildings
which might otherwise present very poorly.” An Taisce says: “Barronstrand / Broad Street were beautifully presented and exceptionally well served by not just regular litter bins but also bins specifically to accommodate ‘Festival Litter’. the report says that by far the most heavily littered area was a litter blackspot on the Dunmore Rd – “it was noted in the previous survey and has since deteriorated further.” The report says:”There were two litter blackspots which didn’t get into this state overnight - Wasteground beside St Saviours GAA (highlighted in previous IBAL surveys) and the area to rear of Ryan’s Pub – they weren’t just casually littered but subject to heavy dumping.

Tramore has plans for a cycle highway
WATERFORD council is working on plans for a ‘bicycle highway’ to be created around Tramore. At present a strip of grass runs the full length of Tramore’s ring road, separating the road from the footpath. The plan is to convert this strip into a proper cycle lane, separated from both the footpath and the road. “This would service the large numbers of new housing estates, built in recent years,” said Fianna Fáil Councillor Eamon Quinlan, who raised the issue at a Metropolitan meeting of Waterford City and County Council.. Director of Services for Roads and Infrastructure, Fergus Galvin, said they were in agreement with th councillor that there was an opportunity to deliver this initiative. He said the council was committing to have full designs drawn up to submit
to the department for funding this year. He said it would be “a great project” that could make Tramore the most cyclefriendly town in Ireland. “But it is important that any designs are shown to the public and in particular the local community before anything is sent to the department”. A Green representative, meanwhile, has hailed “a new era for walking and cycling in Waterford”. Críostóir Ó Faoláin, the Green Party Local Area Rep for Dungarvan.was referring to the announcement of additional funding for walking and cycling infrastructure, , predicted to create 248 new jobs in local authorities and cycle design offices around the country. “I welcome the new jobs which will be created in Waterford City and County Council, and the announcement that a Regional Cycle Design Office will be based in Waterford,” he said.t

Best place to live? You’re in it already
WATERFORD offers the best lifestyle of any county in Ireland, according to an international guide. The Livability Index is designed to help people thinking of moving home or changing job. The Republic’s 26 counties are scored out of 100 according to natural amenity, proximity to a city, sunshine and cost of housing. It gives Waterford a score of 74 out of 100, ahead of Wexford (69), Donegal (67) and Cork (63). The index notes that Waterford is one of the sunniest counties, has reasonably priced housing, is one of the most scenic counties and residents have access to the facilities of Waterford city. According to the authors: “The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the move to remote working, enabling people to avoid lengthy commutes to work. This has spurred an interest in relocating away from large cities.”

Redwing (Photo Justin Ivory)
The recent cold snap has seen an influx of thrushes to the country as they seek to escape the worst of the worst of the wintry conditions. This movement includes my two favourite thrush species Redwing (Turdus iliacus) and Fieldfare (Turdus pilaris). Both species are just winter visitors to Ireland and do not breed here. Redwing is a common winter visitor to Ireland with birds coming from the Icelandic and Scandinavian breeding populations. Smaller than a Blackbird and bearing a passing resemblance to a Song Thrush, Redwing have a distinctive vivid creamy-white stripe over the eye (supercilium) and submoustachial stripe. They also have a distinctive rusty-red patch on the flanks when at rest. In flight they show an unmistakable rusty-red armpit where the wings meet the body. They typically travel at night and on a still winters night you can often hear their tell-tale high-pitched ‘tseep’ call. Its Irish name Deargán sneachta, means ‘red one of the snow’ confirming its association with arriving in harsh, cold conditions. Fieldfare come here from their breeding grounds in Scandinavia and other parts of continental Europe. They are considerable bigger than Redwing almost as big as a Mistle Thrush. They have a very handsome and distinctive plumage – grey head, nape and rump and chestnut brown upper-parts. The breast has heavy spotting/streaking on a buffy-yellow background. They make a loud, noisy chacking sound in flight. The name Fieldfare comes from old Anglo-Saxon meaning ‘traveller over the fields’. Both species favour open fields in lowland areas and tend to avoid suburban and urban areas unless the weather gets really harsh when they will visit gardens. They both like to feed on earthworms, berries and other fruit. They particularly like hawthorn berries. Keep an eye (and an ear) out for these really handsome winter visitors over the next few weeks.

Love him or loathe him, Bill Gates has spent a decade investigating the causes and effects of climate change. Here he outlines how, using a combination of science and technology, humans can bring greenhouse gas emissions per year to zero and avoid a climate catastrophe.

THIS Italian film tells the true story of a man who falls in love with the local mayor’s daughter (Come on, have you never watched The Godfather?!) encountering all kinds of trouble (Duuuh!) when he refuses to let her go (Duuuh, again). Italian actor Riccardo Scamarcio (from John Wick: Chapter 2) stars as Ciccio Paradiso, with Italian model Gaia Bermani Amaral as his love interest Bianca. If it looks like a cliche Italian story full of passion and romance intertwined with olive oil, politics and maybe even a horse’s head, then it probably is. But crack open a bottle of Montepulciano d’abruzzo and enjoy.

Anniversaries & Birthday Remembrance COLLINS
1st anniversary Patrick Colfer - Love you Dad, Brian, Maria and Kurt
In loving memory of Mary O’Keeffe, late of Mayor’s Walk, Waterford, whose tenth anniversary occurs on 29th January 2021. Sharing our thoughts in sweet remembrance on this day. From the darkness in which we all swam to overcome the confusion of your departure. Ten years on yet each day, each night, each light, each dark you are near to us. When our thoughts turn to you our tender worlds bloom like yellow roses in the warming sun. You hold us together, our treasure and our triumph. It’s you who inspired us to be who we are today. We never forget, how you taught us love and how to care, How you gave us strength and you showed us grace. A stronger person would be hard to find, While in your heart, you were always kind and brought joy. Without favour you supported us all in one way or another, The wisdom you shared has not been empty nor vain. Now as the light comes back to the forest and fields We will continue to treasure your ways in the times ahead. Though apart and socially distant you bind us together in our thoughts and prayers. - With love and gratitude always from your children Maria, Philip, Jim, Anne and Dominic, daughters & son-in-law Ann Brett, Phil Regan and Nicholas Walsh, grandchildren Heather, Joss, John, Mark, Saoirse, Isabel and Oran, and your great friends Barbara McEvoy, Guenter Bens and Cathleen Morris. Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. O.W. 6th Anniversary Richard Deady
90th Remembrance JAMES KELLY
I’m memory of Richard Deady of 7 Blake’s lane Waterford who’s 6th anniversary occurs on 2nd February 2019.
Birthday remembrance for James Kelly late of 95 Dominics Place, whose birthday occurs on the 4th February.
They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal, But neither time nor reason Will change the way I feel, For no one knows the heartacche, That lies behind our smiles, No one knows how many times, We have broken down and cried, We want to tell you something, So there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think of, But so hard to be without.
Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning’s hush, I am the swift, uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine in the night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there: I did not die. - Sadly missed by your daughter Angela
- Lots of love Aileen,Connie, Susan and John and grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Thank you to the Doctors and staff in the Murphy Practise for all their help to Eddie and to Father Liam Power for the lovely funeral mass. As it would be impossible to thank everyone. We hope you will accept our humble thanks. The Holy Sacrifice of the mass will be offered for your intentions.
I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one, I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. I’d like to leave an echo, Whipering softly down the ways of happy times, And laughing times and bright and sunny days, I’d like the tears of those who grieve, To dry before the sun of happy memories, That I leave when life is done. - Sadly missed by daughter Marie, sons Michael, Bernard, John, daughters in law & grandsons. God saw the road was getting tough, The hill too hard to climb, He gently closed your loving eyes, And whispered peace be thine, A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands at rest, He broke our hearts to prove, He only takes the best, Your life was love and labour, Your love for your family true, You did your best for all of us, We will always remember you. So keep your hands around him Lord, And give him special care, Make up for all that he suffered, And all that seemed unfair. We have many things to thank you for, We just don’t know where to start, Just to tell you that we love you, From the bottom of our hearts. - Happy Birthday, love, your son Paul, daughter in law Sharon and grandaughter Shannon
Anniversaries DOYLE
12th Anniversary KAY McLOUGHLIN
Cherished memories of Kay McLoughlin, late of The Tavern Pub, Lower Yellow Road, who died on the 12th February, 2009. May she rest in peace.
In loving memory of Teddy who died on 20th February 2006 and Raymond who died on 5th February 2011. R.I.P., both late of 15 Ursuline Court, Waterford. Sadly missed along life’s way, Quietly remembered every day, No longer in our life to share, But in our hearts you’re always there. - Never forgotten by your sister Breda, brother in law Sam, nieces and nephews. Glorious ArchanRaphael gel Saint great prince of the heavenly court, you are illustrious for your gifts of wisdom and grace. You are a guide of those who journey by land or sea or air, consoler of the afflicted, and refuge of sinners. I beg you, assist me in all my needs and in all the sufferings of this life, as once you helped the young Tobias on his travels. Because you are the medicine of God, I humbly pray you to heal the many infirmities of my soul and the ills that afflict my body. I especially ask of you the favor (mention your request here) and the great grace of purity to prepare me to be the temple of the Holy Spirit. Amen. C.W. Saint Gabriel the Archangel, I venerate you as the Angel of the Incarnation, because God specially appointed you to bear the messages concerning the God-Man to Daniel, Zechariah, and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Give me a very tender and devoted love for the Incarnate Word and his Blessed Mother, more like your own. I venerate you also as the “Strength from God”, because you are the giver of God’s strength, consoler and comforter chosen to strengthen God’s faithful and teach them important truths. I ask for the grace of a special power of the will to strive for holiness of life. Steady my resolutions; renew my courage; comfort and console me in the problems, trials and sufferings of daily living, as you consoled our Savior in his agony and Mary in her sorrows and Joseph in his trials. I put my confidence in you. Saint Gabriel, I ask you especially for this favor. Through your earnest love for the Son of God made man and for his Blessed Mother, I beg of you, intercede for me that my request may be granted, it it be God’s holy will. Pray for us, Saint Gabriel the Archangel. That we may be worthy of the promises of Christ. C.W.
You gave us years of happiness, The sorrow came with tears, You left us lovely memories, We will treasure through the years. - Always remember Kay in your prayers, from your son Tosh, your grandchildren Niamh, Roisin and great grand-daughters Kayla, Faye & Emily Saint Michael the Archangel, loyal champion of God and His People. I turn to you with confidence and seek your powerful intercession. For the love of God, Who made you so glorious in grace and power, and for the love of the Mother of Jesus, the Queen of the Angels, be pleased to hear our prayer. You know the value of our souls in the eyes of God. May no stain of evil ever disfigure its beauty. Help us to conquer the evil spirit who tempts us. We desire to imitate your loyalty to God and Holy Mother and your great love for God and people. And since you are God’s messenger for the care of His people, we entrust to you these special intentions. Lord, hear and grant our special intentions for this Novena. In the name of our blessed Lord and redeemer Jesus Christ. Amen. C.W. o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore of you to obtain for me my request. The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so you are the saint of miracles. O gentle and loving St Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, intercede for me and whisper my prayer into the ear of the sweet Infant Jesus who loved to linger in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will be yours.
