Delight as Déise back in big time HURLING fever is sweeping Waterford again. A thrilling victory over neighbours Tipperary has put the Déise back in the big time with a chance to avenge last year’s All Ireland final defeat by Limerick. The counties will meet in Saturday’s All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship semifinal at Croke Park . Punters are backing them to go all the way. BoyleSports has cut the odds on a Liam MacCarthy win from 12/1 to 9/2 . Waterford are 3/1 to reach the final. Waterford went through after a 4-28 to 2-27 win over Tipperary in a nail-biting contest at Páirc Uí Chaoimh. Goals from Austin Gleeson, Dessie Hutchinson, Stephen Bennett and Neil Montgomery took Liam Cahill’s team to victory over his native county. Cahill said his players showed “brilliant heart” . “Tipp looked to be coming at us in droves,” he said. “Usually, when they come at you like that, they get you done.”
The Ballingarry man was rueful about victory over his home county. “I don’t take any particular pleasure in being part of this,” he told WLR. “It was a difficult place to be.. We had a job to do. We got it done, and we move on now.”

BARR STAR: There is huge pride in the county at the Olympic achievement of Waterford’s Thomas Barr who narrowly missed out on a place in the 400m hurdles final. Barr, who reached the semifinal with a brilliant second place performance, recorded his second-best time ever but fell just short of qualification. He was placed overall ninth in the competition. There is also great pride in the achievments of runner Phil Healy who competed with distinction in the 200m, 400m and mixed relay. Healy is a Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) Masters student. She has an MSc in Computing and is a WIT Vikings Elite Sports Scholar

Sarah Richards and Conor Naughton, the husband and wife team behind the artisan sourdough bakery, have expanded the baking area in Tramore and opened a new bakery shop in Dunmore East. There are now three Seagull Bakery shops across Waterford. The Seagull weas hatched in Sarah’s kitchen in 2002, moved to the Saturday market in Tramore and opened its doors at Broad Street in 2016.
A new bakery shop was opened in Waterford city earlier this year . Sarah believes the Covid pandemic has encouraged people towards healthy eating and shopping locally . “We are delighted to see just how much our customers are enjoying shopping more locally, not only at Seagull but at many other local and independent businesses,” she said. Another Waterford business, The Book Resort, is also expanding. The supplier of bespoke gift boxes is awaiting the delivery of a new van - the first of many, it hopes. The mother and son team, Aisling Finn and Liam Hayes, send out luxury boxes with books and Irish-made chocolate. “Having our own vehicle will enable us to deliver our beautiful boxes at precise times and ensure our local customers receive outstanding service,” explained Aisling.
Just 3% of homes are lying vacant
WATERFORD has a low rate of vacant homes, new figures show. In June the vacancy rate here stood at 2.9%. The national average was 4.5%. Dublin, at 1.6%, had lowest vacancy rate in the country. The figures are from the GeoView Residential Buildings Report published by GeoDirectory and EY Economic Advisory. It found that 610 buildings were under construction in Waterford in June . The average residential property price in Waterford for the twelve months to May 2021 was €214,020. and 14.7% of all transactions involved new dwellings . WEB WAYS: 620 new .ie domains were registered in Waterford in the first half of 2021, according to the latest .IE Domain Profile Report. Bishop to defy Covid curb on ceremonies WATERFORD’S Catholic bishop, Dr Alphonsus Cullinan, says the diocese will offer first communions and confirmations to children, contrary to Government and public health advice. He has joined the bishops of Elphin and Clogher in declaring their intention to proceed with the ceremonies. Taoiseach Micheál Martin criticised the bishops’ stance. He said the Government’s only motivation was to protect people’s health. “I think that should be accepted in good faith,” he said. Health Minister Stephen Donnelly urged bishops not to resume the ceremonies. “When you’re dealing with a deadly virus, ultimately what you’re doing is putting people’s lives at risk,” he said. But Dr Cullinan, Bishop of Waterford ansd Lismore, said spiritual health was also important. “As a bishop, I must take both into consideration, spiritual health and physical health,” he told the Irish Independent. Bishop Cullinan was criti-
cal of the Government and Nphet, saying their communication left a great deal to be desired. He said he had seen “large crowds congregating at all kinds of venues” in Waterford, including at sports events. “I can see no valid reason for the further postponement of the sacraments for our children,” he said. The Government curb on religious ceremonies has not been backed by legislation. It is aimed at limiting the size of gatherings and avoiding the socialising that often follows these events. VACCINE: A walk-in centre where anyone over 16 could be vaccinated against Covid was in operation in Waterford over the bank holiday. Mr Donnelly, who visited the centre, confirmed that the vaccine programme would soon be extended to chldren in the 12 to 15 age group. “I am delighted to confirm that our young people will be offered an opportunity to protect themselves from Covid-19,” the minister said.
Big jobs boost from local expansions
ALMOST 300 new jobs are on their way to Waterford through expansion by two international companies. Global sciences company, Repligen, is adding to the facility it already has at the Butlerstown Business Park and will increase its staff from 74 to more than 200. The American company, formerly ARTeSYN BioSolutions, makes filtration and other bioprocessing tools that enable the manufacture of biologic drugs. Fine Gael Senator John Cummins said the decision was a huge vote of confidence in Waterford. Fianna Fáil TD and junior minister Mary Butler, said it was “great news for Waterford”. She also welcomed an announcement from Bausch and Lomb that it would be adding another 130 jobs to its team in Waterford.
“Waterford is rightly recognised as leading the way in pharmaceutical and life sciences, and both these announcements show a real vote of confidence in its talented workforce,” said the minister. The contact lens manufacturer will begin adding the extra jobs in 2023. Job vacancies in Waterford increased by more than 40 per cent in the second quarter of the year, according to the IrishJobs. ie Jobs Index. The increase, when compared to the first quarter, revealed particular demand for jobs in accounting, banking, marketing, secretarial and administration . Vacancies have increased substantially in all but two counties, Limerick and Sligo. The biggest increase was in Wicklow, 106%. The figure for Waterford was 44%. For Dublin it was 47 %.

Tramore tops but butts spoil Dungarvan
TRAMORE beach is one of Ireland’s cleanest, a new survey shows. But a majority of beaches and harbours around the country are falling short of ‘clean’ status, among them Dungarvan harbour. It is rated ‘moderately littered’ in the survey by the group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL). Kilmore Quay, in Wexford, Bray serafront (Wicklow) and Dun Laoghaire harbour are among 12 locations that join Tramore in the ‘clean to European norms’ category. IBAL says it was “striking how incredibly clean the beach area and immediate hinterland of Tramore Strand were, with the beach particularly pristine”. It says: “Regular bins were supplemented by additional ones for the summer season and litter awareness / dog
fouling notices were in excellent condition and fresh in appearance. As well as recycling options, there was a novel feature for the collection of plastic bottles for recycling. Despite plenty of activity, there was a virtual absence of litter in the area surveyed. It is clear that great care is taken to not only keep the area clean and clear, but also an inviting and pleasant environment.” Of Dungarvan, the report says: “The overall impression at Dungarvan harbour and immediate hinterland was of a moderately littered site with no large accumulations. There were some notable items within the water area, e.g. traffic cones and alcohol related litter, e.g. beer bottles and pint glasses. The problem with glass bottles and glass is that they can break and become a health hazard, as
did happen at this site. Cigarette butts were also present.” The report says Walton Park was “very freshly presented with attractive planning, good overall maintenance and minimal litter.” IBAL says the overall story is positive. “We’ve seen a welcome rise in the number of clean beaches and harbours compared to our study of two years ago,” said Conor Horgan of IBAL. “ “However, at the bottom end of the table, we’ve seen many areas deteriorate from ‘moderately littered’ to ‘littered’.” The most common forms of litter found by the assessors were cigarette butts, sweet wrappers, disposable masks and plastic bottles, with coffee cups also featuring strongly. Alcohol cans were found in almost half of all sites.
It’s a local clean sweep
A CAMAPIGN has been launched in Waterford to keep our streets free from gum. “Bin your gum when you’re done,” is the slogan for the Gum Litter Taskforce, announced by the mayor, Councillor Joe Kelly. “We can never underestimate the pride that people have in their local towns and villages,” he said. “As ever, I am confident that the people throughout Waterford will do their town and local
community proud by getting behind the Gum Litter Taskforce campaign in an effort to invoke positive change within their local communities.” While the mayor was declaring war on gum, the deputy mayor, Councillor Seánie Power joined Johnny Brunnock, the council’s Trails Officer and Ella Ryan, Environment Awareness Officer, to mark the council’s membership of Leave No
Trace Ireland. They are asking people to bring their litter home with them and help protect Waterford’s beauty spots. The people of Templars’ Hall, meanwhile, have taken matters into their own hands. Memebers of the Residents Association (pictured above) held an estate clean-up. The great turnout was increased by help from Larchville/ Lisduggan Residents Association.

WATERFORD is to get a new Adult Acute Mental Health Unit. Funding for the 50-bed unit has been confirmed by the Department of Health as part of the capital plan for 2021. The service in the South East has been under pressure for some time with patients being referred to St Patricks in Dublin. Minister for Mental Health, Mary Butler, the Waterford Fianna Fáil TD, said the planned unit was “very welcome progress”. Sinn Féin’s health spokesperson, Waterford TD David Cullinane, said it was “a vital step” to developing mental health services in the region. “I look forward to continuing work with Minister Butler to get this done,” he said. Detailed design of the unit is expected to be ready by the end of the year.. Ms Butler said she had worked closely with the Minister for Health and his department to secure the funding. “I am delighted that hard work paid off,” she said.

Smaller, shorter, cheaper: that’s my Olympic dream
I
AM enjoying the Olympics much more than I had expected. The lack of real audiences takes away some of the atmosphere and it must be disappointing for the contestants who have worked so hard to get to Tokyo only to find it a city under lockdown. There is no Olympic village for them to savour and, if eliminated, they can’t even stay on to cheer for their teammates in other competitions. But the lack of commercial hype and razzmatazz has focused attention on the sport, which has been good, with some Irish contestants doing exceptionally well. Covid has forced a scaling back of the Games which the International Olympic Committee (IOC), in thrall to its big business sponsors, would never
Michael Wolsey
have voluntarily accepted. Over recent decades the Games have been as much about showbusiness as sport, with more attention paid to the opening and closing ceremonies than to many of the events. They have also become outrageously expensive to stage. Cities gamble that the prestige garnered by the Games, and the global attention they attract, will outweigh the potentially ruinous costs. If they call it wrong, they are in trouble. Tokyo is getting very little out of these Games, which have been met with hostility by the Covid-cautious Japanese public. Japan can cover the loss, but less-wealthy countries struggle to clear their Olympic debts. Rio is still paying for the Games of 2016 and Athens for
the 2004 extravaganza. China’s economics are hard to measure, but the Games of 2008 left Beijing with stadiums and training centres that are rarely used and somebody has to foot the bill, estimated at $3 billion. So there are sound economic reasons for reducing the Olympic hype and, although everyone wants to see their own particular sport included, it is generally agreed that the Games, once the prerogative of elite amateur athletes, have grown into an unwieldy carnival. The IOC could make a start by eliminating sports with major tournaments of their own which contestants regard as more important than the Olympics. Golf and tennis are the prime examples and I would also include road cycling whose amazing athletes would gladly sacri-
fice an Olympic medal if it gave them the winner’s jersey in the Tour de France. Rugby Sevens seems sufficiently different from normal Rugby Union to allow its inclusion and - for the moment, but maybe not much longer - women’s football can reasonably claim the Games as its premier competition. The same cannot be said of men’s football. Its overpaid superstars do not even want to compete in the Games so competition is restricted to under-23 players with the exception of three older players in every squad. Some countries field strong teams, some field very young teams and some top soccer countries field no teams at all. Some regard it as a development tournament, a disrespectful way to treat the Olympic
Games and an insult to the other sports. As well as getting rid of these big sports, the IOC should also take a look at some of the odder events it has included. Skateboarding takes skill and courage but is surely best confined to a secure corner of the local park. Sport Climbing - rock climbing but without real rocks should be left in the gym. And softball is not really an international sport, as it is only played seriously in North America and Japan. There is nothing wrong with any of these activities but the current Games feature a total of 33 sports and 339 events and the IOC’s aim should be to cut back the number, not extend it. Faster, Higher, Stronger is the Olympic motto. Smaller, Shorter, Cheaper would be a good alternative.

An Olympics like no other
T
his has been an Olympic Games like no other. The hosts didn’t want it to go ahead, right up until the start, due to concerns about the spread of Covid-19
variants. When it did start we were in the middle of a heatwave here in Ireland, meaning that many didn’t even realise the Olympic Games had commenced. Unusual as all of the above is, the stand-out aspect of this Olympics for me has been the amount of headlines given to the mental health/mental wellbeing angle. We have never seen this before at a major sporting event. The sports-starved public needed Tokyo 2020 to go ahead in 2021, in the same way that they needed the Euro 2020 tournament to be played off a year late. People have been through a tough time with Covid-19; they needed to be entertained. Turn this around the other way though. What about the
sportspersons we are counting on to entertain us? How has the last 18 months been for them? I can hazard a guess; stressful, lonely, uncertain, depressing. Shaun Murphy spoke about this very eloquently at this years’ World Snooker Championship; to those who paid attention the subsequent situations involving Simone Biles (pictured), Naomi Osaka and most recently Ben Stokes come as no real surprise. Osaka, a tennis player, took a break from sport in May to focus on her mental health. She missed Wimbledon. She did play in Tokyo but wasn’t firing on all cylinders. Likewise with Simone Biles, the US gymnast, who withdrew from many of her Tokyo events saying “I just think mental health is more prevalent in sports right now; we have to protect our minds and our bodies and not just do what the world wants us to do” Last week Ben Stokes, the England all-round cricketer pulled out of England’s Test
squad for their upcoming series against India. The quote from Stokes echoed what was said by Biles – “Just because we are in nice hotels and are well paid doesn’t mean we don’t go through the same stresses and strains as everyone else.” For those who think this is all a cop-out, think again. A sports person gets only a short career at an elite level, but they have the rest of their lives to live afterwards. They need to protect their wellbeing now in order to invest in their future health, mental and physical. If that disappoints the sports fan in the short term, well sorry but that’s the way it should be. This isn’t necessarily about eliminating pressure on athletes. You need a certain amount of pressure in order to make you perform. I have read plenty of autobiographies by sportspersons and musicians who talk about ‘the fear’ never going away before a race, a gig, whatever. You bottle
this fear and use it to drive you on. If you start masking it then that’s a slippery slope that leads to problems later in life. As we all know, England lost the Euro 2020 tournament on a penalty shootout. The players who missed were subjected to unfair abuse and criticism. The effect of the mental health of these players down the line of the abuse they suffered now is impossible to gauge. I’d be in favour of a tournament being ‘shared’ if extratime in the final fails to separate the sides. We all need to take care of our own mental wellbeing. Do whatever it takes to keep yourself feeling right. Do mindfulness, take exercise, eat well, go to counselling. We all lead busy and stressful lives but we have to listen to our minds and bodies, especially when they are telling us to step off the treadmill. - Brian Quigley

backtoschool
Why it’s so important to plan ahead ... No sooner have the Summer school holidays begun than it’s time to think about all things back-to-school related. Whether it’s pre school, primary school or secondary school, there’s an emotional, and finanical element to the transition. All of this can lead to anxiety for both child and parent, and if there’s more than one child involved it can be quite a stressful time for families. There are of course things that can be done to offset any negative aspects of this time so that you can instead be fully prepared and prepare your little ones too for the next step on their educational journey. Proper planning of both your time and your finances will help to make things go seamlessly. So the obvious advice is not to leave things to the last minute. Proper Planning You will usually get a list from the
school of what your child will need in the way of books and stationary and what is expected regarding school attire. Thankfully there is a shift coming down the line away from the crested and frankly expensive jumpers and tracksuits and more towards budget friendly generic uniforms which won’t break the bank and which your little tykes may have grown out of by mid term! To this end, buy two sizes, one that fits and one a little bigger. This goes for shoes too. Be aware of the ‘voluntary’ donations most schools are forced to request from parents to keep the show going when it comes to sports, art, and other activities. Some schools have even had to ask parents for donations to upcoming maintenance of the roof or the heating system as they simply wouldn’t be able to afford these essential works otherwise.
Financial Assistance
If your finances are tight you can apply for the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance. - - - -
You may qualify if: You have a child between 4 and 17 or between 18 and 22 in secondary education You are getting a qualifying payment from the Department of Social Welfare or an approved training course or employment scheme. You are getting an Increase for a Qualified Child (applies in most cases). You satisfy a means test.
Application forms are available from your Intreo Centre, local Social Welfare Branch Office and Citizens Information Centres or you can apply
online using mywelfare.ie. Be aware that certain rules apply and the closing date for applications is September 30, 2021. Most people apply from June/July onwards so don’t delay. This year the government is providing an extra €25 to each child in a scheme designed to help families cover the costs of going back to school. The Back to School Clothing and Footwear allowance, which will be paid automatically to around 110,000 families in 2019, will increase to €150 for children aged 4-11, up €25 from a €125 allowance in 2018. There’s also been a €25 increase for children aged 12 and over – a jump from €250 in 2018 to €275 in 2019. The means-tested one-off payment aims to help families with the costs of children returning to school. It is paid automatically from the week beginning 8 July.
Preparing your child Once the practical elements are out of the way you can begin to prepare your child (and yourself) emotionally if it is their very first day of school or even their first day at ‘big school.’ Talk to your child about what they can expect in the weeks leading up the school term. Be positive and try not to convey any anxiety or worry you may have yourself to the child. Explain that there will be lots of other children exactly like yours there and that it’s all new and exciting to them too. You could even drive by the school a few times so your child becomes familiar with the route you’ll be taking and the building itself, let them know you’ll be there to see them off and you (or whoever will be dropping off and picking up) will be right outside waiting when they’re finished. Beautiful Butterflies
book of the week
with Justin Ivory
Last weekend half of the East Coast flocked to Bray to see the annual spectacle of the Bray Air Display. Well with the glorious weather we have had of late we are currently being treated to spectacular air displays anywhere there are a few flowers. These displays are more about beauty and grace rather than speed and power. Of course I am referring to our beautiful butterflies. Ireland has 32 resident and 3 common migrant butterfly species. Below is a selection of some that are on the wing at the moment. So take the time to go out and see these little beauties and even better report your sightings to the National Biodiversity Data Centre. Enjoy! (All photos Justin Ivory)

reminiscent of the cyber noir novels of William Gibson and the golden age of espionage fiction, This Eden is bluntly described as a ‘fast-paced literary thriller’ by the Irish-Canadian author and journalist. But O’Loughlin’s books are always difficult to pigeon hole and as one of the more unique authors writing today, readers can expect to be taken down a lot of rabbit holes as the story hurtles from Vancouver to Jordan to Paris. One to pack away for the plane — if you’re lucky enough to be getting on one — or the back garden, which is where most of us will be sitting this summer.
SKY Witness has picked up CBS drama ‘The Equalizer‘, which sees Academy Award nominee Queen Latifah star in a reboot of the classic 1980s crime drama of the same name, which starred the brilliant Edward Woodward in an equally brilliant drama. Denzel Washington made two great movies under the same franchise. To tip the scales a bit and in keeping with everything that is going on Stateside, an African American woman in the lead role seemed fitting but reviews have not been good. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, although new viewers may think differently.
FORMER US President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama rang in the Fourth of July with a new animation series for Netflix aimed at educating children on United States civics lessons. The hope of course was that the sentiment would be easily understood elsewhere around the globe. Titled We the People, the 10-episode series features threeminute music videos covering a wide range of topics to enlighten “a new generation of young Americans about the power of the people.” Not sure the Irish would get this — but you can always give it a go and maybe be thankful we are where we are this side of the pond.

o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore of you to obtain for me my request....(Pause) The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so you are the saint of miracles. O gentle and loving St Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, intercede for me and whisper my prayer into the ear of the sweet Infant Jesus who loved to linger in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will be yours. J.P.
In loving memory of Paddy Collopy, late of 75 Doyle Street, whose 6th Anniversary occurs on 4th August. God looked around his garden And saw an empty space, He then looked down from Heaven And saw your tired face, He wrapped his arms around you And whispered Come to rest, His garden must be beautiful, Paddy, because He only takes the best.
The flowers we place upon your grave Will wither and decay, But all the love we have for you Will never go away. To us you are someone special, What more is there to say, We only wish with all our hearts That you were here today. - Not forgotten by your nephew Michael, Aoife and Harry
We cannot bring the old days back When we were all together, But those we love don’t go away They live with us forever, The gates of heaven opened wide, The angels lined up side by side, A special guest was on his way The day God called you home to stay.
A smile for all, a heart of gold, One of the best the world could hold, Never selfish, always kind, These are the memories you left behind, To hear your voice, to see you smile, To sit and talk with you a while, To be together in the same old way, Would be our dearest wish to day, Though absent, you are always near, Still loved, still missed, still very dear.

I held your hand that day, I knew we soon would part, I watched you slowly slip away But you will never leave my heart, Time may hide the sadness Like a smile can hide a tear, But memories last forever For an uncle I loved so dear, It broke my heart to lose you, You did not go alone, For a part of me went with you The day God called you home. - Never forgotten by your niece Sharon and Derek.
