Fury as acid attack gang escape charge
THE families of the victims injured in the acid attack in Waterford city last year have said they feel let down by the State. The families of Tega Agberhiere, Padraig O’Sullivan and Oisin Daly Kililea received horrific injuries after they were attacked in the Earlscourt housing estate on the Dunmore Road last April. In recent days the families were told that a decision by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) not to prosecute those responsible for the attack would be upheld. Talented sportsman Tega Agberhiere (17) suffered horrific burns to his face and back. There were initial fears that Tega, who plays football at youth level with Waterford FC, might be left partially blinded after some of the corrosive substance went into his eyes. The fact Tega, who has represented Ireland, was wearing contact lens is believed

to have protected his eyes and saved his sight. The families have reacted with dismay over the past 24 hours. Tega’s mother Christy Agberhiere said it makes their situation even more upsetting. “I feel very, very pained in my heart,” she said. “I have been let down, my son has been let down. The whole of my family has been let down. I just feel ashamed that a country like this there is no equality.” Ms Agberhiere said: “I cannot take the laws into my hands. This is my son I am talking about. He has done nothing.” Oisin’s father Martin said the families still hope to get the decision, but he added: “I don’t know if we’ll be able to appeal it, and we’ll probably be fighting this for the next person this happens to. “This could happen to anyone’s son. “This sort of thing gets a 20year sentence in the UK and this decision sets a dangerous precedent here.”

news in brief Gregory’s Clothes for Men shuts Waterford has suffered another major retail blow after one of the city’s best-known menswear stores announced it is shutting its doors with immediate effect. After three decades of trading in the city, Gregory’s Clothes for Men on Patrick Street said it could no longer remain open as a result of an “insurmountable downturn in business”. In a statement posted on social media last night, the store said: “It is with great regret that after 27 years, due to an insurmountable downturn in business, we must annouce that Gregory’s Clothes for Men will cease trading as of today February 3rd 2020. “We would like to thank everyone for their support over the years and wish you all well in the future.”
Tourism ‘not being evenly spread’
Hotel and guesthouse owners in Waterford and across the country have called on candidates in the general election to commit to decisive support of continued growth of Irish tourism. Colm Neville, Chair of the South East branch of the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) said that, while tourism had returned to growth in recent years, the recovery has not been evenly spread across the country.

Mount Congreve Farm sold
One of the largest land sales to come up in county Waterford in a while has just been completed for an undisclosed sum. The 400-acre Mount Congreve Farm between Waterford City and Kilmeaden has been sold to local businessman. Land agents Savill’s oversaw the deal. As part of the deal, the buyer has also taken ownership of the dairy herd which has numbered up to 450 on the farm.
Upon the passing of Ambrose Christian Congreve in 2011 at the amazing age of 104, he left the estate in trust to the Irish State. This latest development sees the state remain in ownership of the house, gardens and some forests. There are major plans in development which would see Mount Congreve become a tourist hub for Waterford. As part of the plans Mount
Congreve house would undergo upgrades and renovations to provide ease of access for the public with the intention of hosting major events, create visitor accommodation and develop offices. It is expected to develop the section of the farmyard held over from the sale, to create a café; meeting facilities, craft yard; children’s play area and retail units.

WATERFORD has been “neglected” and it’s time for a change in government, Labour’s election candidate and Mayor of Waterford John Pratt appealed to voters “to consider real change”. Cllr Pratt said the four seat Waterford constituency would elect at least two new TDs to the next Dáil, and he urged voters to give him the chance to be one of these. “The status quo is not working. “This country is in crisis and Waterford has been neglected more than most by the mainstream parties. “We can’t afford any more of their failed policies. “Older people are suffering on hospital trolleys. 24/7 cardiac care still hasn’t been delivered. Families are struggling to pay for housing and childcare. Waterford is still waiting on a university...” he told reporters on a visit to Dungarvan.
Car sales slump New car sales in Waterford fell by 16.18% in January when compared to the same month last year, new figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) show. Just 725 new cars were purchased as opoosed to 865.
SINN FEIN is the most popular political party in the State after opening up a clear lead over Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil for the very first time since reentering the Dáil in 1997. According to the latest Irish Times/Ipsos MRBI opinion poll, the party led by Mary Lou McDonald now stands at 25%, up four, while Fine Gael’s support has slipped again to 20% while Fianna Fáil is also down two points to 23. This latest surge means that Sinn Féin’s support has risen by 11% since October with voters clearly connecting with their message for change as well as their promise to return the pension age to 65. The shock finding throws the General Election campaign into chaos with just days until polling day with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and his party set to lose power after falling nine points since October. The campaign has been further complicated by the sudden death of Tipperary independent candidate Marese Skehan at her home, which means that the election of candidates will not proceed in the constituency Saturday. Her sudden death is not being treated as suspicious. The Department of Housing has confirmed that the existing field of candidates will have to be countermanded by the Tipperary returning officer. Independent Candidates in Tipperary Mattie McGrath and
Joe Hannigan confirmed last night that they’ll seek legal advice as to whether the postponement of the election can be avoided. The shock poll of 1,200 voters, published on Monday night, shows: Fine Gael has suffered a sharp 11% drop in support among middle class, middle-aged voters aged 35-49 in just two weeks from 29% to 18%; Sinn Féin’s rating among the highest educated and highest earners rises by 4%; Support for the Greens has plateaued while Labour are down to just 4%; Support for the Government has slumped by 6 points to just 21%; Satisfaction for Leo Varadkar is down five to 30% and down 21% since October, support for Micheal Martin is down again from 33% to 30% while support for Ms McDonald is up seven points from 34% to 41%. The full state of the parties is as follows: Sinn Féin 25% up four; Fianna Fáil 23% down 2; Fine Gael 20% down 3; Green Party 8% no change; Labour 4% down 1 with Independents/ others 20% up 2. The poll, conducted by Ipsos MRBI, was taken by way of personal in home interviews between last Thursday January 30th and Saturday February 1st at 120 sampling points in every constituency across the country. There is a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8%.

Brexit comes and we get two more MEPs
WITH the UK’s departure of the EU, Barry Andrews (Fianna Fáil/ Renew Europe) and Deirdre Clune (Fine Gael/ EPP) took their seats in the European Parliament on February 1st. Barry Andrews and Deirdre
Clune were elected, in last May’s European elections, in the Dublin and Ireland South constituencies respectively, of which Waterford is a part. Due to the UK’s decision to leave the EU, 27 of the 73 UK
seats were redistributed to other member states, and 46 will be reserved for future expansion. Ireland gained an additional two MEPs. The Oireachtas chose to add these seats to the constituency of Ireland South and to Dublin. Ireland South was also expanded to include the counties of Laois and Offaly. Deirdre Clune and Barry Andrews were the last candidates to reach the quota following the European Elections and therefore had to wait until the official departure of the UK from the EU, which took place on January 31. The Irish Government in January 2020 gave the official notice of election to the European Parliament meaning that from Saturday, February 1st, they will officially become MEPs. At the plenary sitting of February 10th in Strasbourg, the European Parliament will take note of the election of both new members. The European Parliament will have 705 seats, compared with a previous 751. All new MEPs were elected at the May 2019 European Election, Some names have already been confirmed.

he 2020 general election is just days away and one of the key hot button issues is Retirement Age and the State Pension. Under the Pensions Framework, 2010, the then Brian Cowan Government agreed to implement increases in the State Pension Age in order to comply with Troika recommendations. The Social Welfare and Pensions Act, 2011 giving effect to those changes was introduced by the new Fine Gael government led by Enda Kenny. In 2014, the State Pension, Transition, payable for one year at age 65 was abolished and the commencement age for the State Pension was set at 66. This left thousands who were contractually obligated to retire at 65 needing to sign onto Job Seekers Benefits to bridge the gap. The pension age is set to increase to 67 in 2021 and 68 in 2028 under the 2011 Act. In spite of the increase in the pension age, many politicians remain exempt from the changes.
The gap between private and public sector pensions is widening even further. There is no doubt that General Election 2020 may have an immediate measurable effect on your S t a t e P e n sion. There are a number o f options available to mitigate this risk: * Challenge candidates when canvassing as to how they plan to help retirees until their State Pension kicks in. * Keep informed by tuning in and listening to the various political broadcasts on television and radio. * Consider contributing to a private pension - this will help to reduce the risk of an income gap at retirement. To discuss setting up a private pension; for advice on your future retirement planning or for more information on self-administered pensions, please contact Adelphi Financial Brokers.

TDs and Ministers who were public servants before 2004 are entitled to retire at 50, while those who came into office later can access their pension at 65. Only those who entered public service after 2013 will have to wait for as long as most ordinary workers for their pension payments to kick in. And now, even they can choose to draw their pension when they turn 65.

Dermot turns to Sienna
THE Waterford based business Sienna Home Furnishings are no strangers to the limelight, having already featured on Room To Improve last October. It was nonetheless a huge honour when architect and presenter of Room To Improve, Dermot Bannon, returned to their showroom recently to select bespoke pieces from Sienna for his
own home. The two-part RTE series featured the renovation of Dermot’s new home; the show brought the nation through the ups and downs of Dermot’s journey, showcasing in particular some of the decisions that needed to be made. It was worth it all however when we were presented with the finished product; a house that captured the essence
of architectural design, innovative thinking and sheer beauty. Speaking on the series, owners of Sienna Home Furnishings, Paul and Janice Lenehan said: “We were delighted that our furniture featured on Room to Improve last October, and even more so when Dermot returned to our showroom to furnish his own house!”
STEEL RAIN. This South Korean movie revolves around the fact that there has been a coup in North Korea and their leader has mysteriously vanished. The point is that he hasn’t vanished but is being shuttled around, by one lone North Korean agent, to various hospitals in the South trying to get treatment for injuries he sustained in a bomb explosion. Although you see parts of The Great Leader, his legs, his torso, at various times in the film at absolutely no point do you see his face. That, it must obviously have been thought, would be taking things one step too far. For all the political machinations that this movie touches on the film is essentially an action piece with lots of fights as the coup leaders try to finish off the job, start a war with America, launch nuclear weapons and generally involve themselves with as much skulduggery as possible. All of this is thwarted by the lone North Korean agent and a mid level bureaucrat from South Korea. Despite the craziness of the film it does overstay it’s welcome as it comes in at over 2 hours and things are fading fast for the last 40 minutes or so. It’s interesting as a curiosity piece if not least for the two ordinary North Korean women who on seeing white rice in the South can’t get over their good fortune. THE DARKEST HOUR This is one of those solid British period piece movies that they seem to do so well. It is no wonder that Gary Oldman won the Best Actor Oscar for his role of Churchill who has just been appointed to lead the country in wartime as Chamberlain resigns. You might think, given the title of the movie, that the darkest hour refers to the situation Britain faced again Nazi Germany but the more you watch the film you realize that it is in fact referring to the position Churchill found himself as leader of the country. Churchill was picked as leader as he was the only person from the Conservatives that the opposition Labour would support. In actual fact he was hated within his own party. Despite his background he was never really considered one of them, given the fact that he led a disasterous campaign in Gallipoli, broke away from the Conservatives at one stage and wasn’t considered a particularly capable Secretary of the Admiralty. This movie doesn’t really concern itself with the war but with the machinations of a concerted group trying to oust Churchill and him trying his best to stay in place. A lesson, if one were ever needed, that when it comes to politics that you have more to fear from your own party than those outside it.

O’Sullivan in call for greater gender balance
GENDER balance in Dáil Éireann would encourage more young women to pursue careers in politics and would draw more attention to issues surrounding women in business in Ireland, according to the President of Network Ireland’s Waterford branch. Digital marketing consultant and entrepreneur Amy O’Sullivan is an advocate for women stepping up in their careers to more senior roles. She has been involved with Network Ireland the past four years, supporting the personal and professional development of local women. “In Network Ireland, we build confidence in our members through monthly events and our mentorship programme,” Ms. O’Sullivan said. The latest Central Statistics Office (CSO) figures, which
showed that only one in nine CEOs of large businesses are female, were “startling but sadly not shocking”. Figures also showed that 93% of company chairpersons were male, compared to 7% female. “Progress is slow in getting more women into senior positions and there needs to be more discussion around this,” Ms. O’Sullivan said. For the first time in history, a woman will contest the Saturday’s General Election in every constituency. Legislation requires parties to ensure that at least 30% of candidates are female, otherwise they would lose half of their State funding. Ms. O’Sullivan said she did not believe gender quotas solely were the solution to propelling women to positions of power. She acknowledged that there was an attraction
for graduates to emigrate, but remained adamant that women could have successful careers in Ireland with the right supports in place. “While there are antidiscrimination laws and generous maternity policies in place to allow women to balance their families and careers, the figures still remain the same. “We need to look at other countries like Finland, who has made huge strides in terms of getting more women into senior roles. “Interestingly, success in countries like Finland has been down to companies’ own initiatives, as opposed to any government-led quota legislation,” the Presentation Secondary School, Thurles, and Dublin City University graduate said.

‘No shortage of cash’ for North Quays project AN Taoiseach Leo Varadkar confirmed that there is tens of millions available both from the Department of Transport and the Department of housing to make sure the North Quays Project is completed. The Taoiseach made the comment after the Waterford News & Star pointed out that only €6m in funding has been awarded since 2018. Speaking at the opening of the N25 New Ross Bypass last week, he said there was a lot more funding available, but he couldn’t give the figure off the top of his head. “I’ve been in close contact with Minister Murphy about and also Councillor Cummins and some others… but it is also commercial so it involves a commercial operator too and we do need to be cautious making those kind of announcements during an election period. “I think that is a project that is going to go ahead, and I think it will develop a new quarter for the city, which will be
to the benefit of everyone in Waterford and the wider region too.” When asked did he have any discussion about with Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin, the Taoiseach said he hasn’t, but added: “I don’t honestly think there is any political party that would be against developing the North Quays, because it would be so much benefit to the city and to the wider region.” The €500 million redevelopment of the Waterford North Quays took a significant step forward in December as developer Falcon Real Estate has submitted a planning application for the scheme. The project targets more than eight hectares of urban regeneration on the south-facing quayside waterfront in the city centre. It includes offices, residential buildings of up to 17-storeys in height, a hotel, a conference centre, and a retail and tourism building on the north bank of the River Suir.

Vote!!!
E
very election is, by default, the most important election that has been held. Although this particular general election, with one or two notable exceptions, has been unusually uneventful it doesn’t mean to say that what is at stake is not important. In a democracy voting is not compulsory but if you do abstain from voting you are effectively canceling out your voice and your say in the way in which you believe your country should be run. Some might fall back on the old argument that all politicians are the same so therefore there is no use in voting for any of them. An excuse for civic laziness if any was ever made. In the Waterford constituency alone there are 11 candidates running in the General Election and they range from Independents, some running on specific issues, Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, Sinn Fein, Labour, Greens and People Before Profit. In other words the whole gamut from right, center to left is represented here for the electorate to choose from. There is absolutely no way that someone could say that there isn’t a person running that represents your specific point of view. Even if you are not particularly interested in party politics and believe that the person is the most important element when it comes to representing Waterford then there are obviously a lot of different people to choose from. Even though Britain has finally exited the EU and the whole issue of upcoming trade talks which will have a significant impact on Ireland have yet to happen Brexit didn’t feature as prominently as some might have thought in the election. Fine Gael might have you think otherwise about it’s message of don’t change horses mid-stream when it comes to Brexit but Fianna Fail begs to differ. On the other hand Sinn Fein repeatedly made the point that for nearly 100 years Governments in Ireland have been wholly dominated by Fianna Fail and Fine Gael and it is time for a new way of doing politics. They are doing well in the polls but whether this will translate into seats and into a place in Government remains to be seen. Labour and the Greens are just trying to get back to a starting position that they were at a number of years ago. It will be interesting to see if the ‘Greta Thunberg’ effect will help the Greens in gaining more Dail seats. We’ve had leader’s debates, polls upon polls and promises upon promises. But the only thing that matters is the mark that Waterford people will make on the ballot box this Saturday. Make sure you use yours.

Why it’s time to talk to Sinn Féin
S
inn Fein says its spending proposals have been costed by the Department of Finance. The claim is true but misleading. They have been costed like a bookie costs a bet. If I ask a bookmaker for the financial implications of putting €10 on a 200-1 outsider, he will tell me that if it wins I will be €2,000 richer, if not I will lose my tenner. He will have accurately costed my proposal but that does not make it sensible. Backing a 2001 outsider remains a very risky venture. And so do Sinn Féin’s fiscal policies. They add up to a bill of €22bn in additional spending which is twice what the Department believes the country can afford. Economist Jim Power has called them “dangerous and fiscally irresponsible”. I don’t risk my money on 200-

1 outsiders and I don’t want a government that gambles in the same “fully costed” fashion with the State’s coffers. That’s why I don’t want to see Sinn Féin in government. Nevertheless, I believe the refusal of Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil to even contemplate that possibility is wrong. It is arrogant. And it is hypocritical because both parties constantly urge such power-sharing on unionists at Stormont. Unionists have a fundamental philosophical difference with Sinn Féin over partition. For DUP leader Arlene Foster it goes further: Sinn Féin’s pals in the IRA murdered her father. Both FF and FG expect Ms Foster and her party to work with Sinn Féin in government but they are not prepared to even talk about that option with Mary Lou McDonald. Coalition formation is a matter of give and take. You see how many of your
policies your maybe-partner is prepared to accept and and how many of its more objectionable proposals your maybe-partner is prepared to drop. Only then will you know if you can do business together. Between Sinn Féin and the traditional governing parties there is a fiscal gap of €11bn and I fear it is too wide to bridge. Personally, I would prefer another Confidence and Supply arrangement or even a grand coalition. I don’t want to take a 200-1 gamble with the nation’s money and my grand-children’s future. But if Sinn Féin is prepared to shorten the odds by dropping some of its more extreme policies, I might take a different view. And so might many supporters of Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil. Maybe it won’t be possible for those parties to do business with Sinn Féin. But they will never know unless they try.

Both say that their primary concern is to give their clients a top notch, comfortable salon experience. order of the day. The experience of the staff that work in Vanity Hair is second to none. Pamela trained in Galway and also in Waterford and has a City and Guilds 1 and 2. She has a diploma from Schwarzkopf and Wella. One of the most reassuring aspects of Vanity Hair is that all of the hair stylists have continued to keep up with the latest aspects in cutting and colouring. Pamela has trained with Paul Mitchell in cutting, Redken in Colouring as well as Alfaparf and Affinage. Also in cutting she has worked with John Richardson in England and top Irish hairdressers Dylan Bradshaw and Wayne Lloyd. She also ran her own studio, The Salon in Gracedieu for 10 years and was manageress at The Sculpting Studio on

Sarah started hairdressing in 2008 and her passion is colour/ and colour correction. In a previous salon, The Sculpting Salon, she was a trainer for a number of years. After that location she moved onto a well known nationwide salon in the city center. Like Pamela she has trained in a number of courses with Alfaparf, Affinage, GHD and with Wayne Lloyd. Her main interests include creative colour and cutting, advanced upstyling, colour correction (advanced), Nexxt Generation cutting course and a step module for qualified stylists. The Never Game
Creedon’s Shannon Wednesday 5 February RTE 2 8:00pm
Colter Shaw is an itinerate traveling the country to help police solve crimes and private citizens locate missing persons. When he learns of a reward for a missing college student in Silicon Valley, he takes the job. The investigation quickly thrusts him into the dark heart of Silicon Valley and the cutthroat billion-dollar video gaming industry–and then a second kidnapping happens…and this victim turns up dead. The clues soon point to one video game, The Never Game, in which the player has to survive after being left abandoned. Is a madman bringing that game to life? If so, Shaw has to stop him before he strikes again…
Episode 1 John Creedon travels the length of the River Shannon, Ireland’s longest river at 360km, which flows through 12 counties. He begins his journey in Co Cavan, where he meets scientists attempting to find the true source of the river. He also visits the Arigna Mines on the shores of Lough Allen, meets a group of divers investigating a sunken ship on the bottom of Lough Ree, and joins wildlife enthusiasts listening for birdsong.

Common Frogs ( Photo Justin Ivory)
Love is in the air! With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, we humans will be getting “all loved up”. But this is also the month for amorous amphibians – in particular the Common Frog. Frogs, being cold-blooded (ectothermic), become inactive and hibernate during winter. During February (sometimes in mild years as early as January), Common Frogs (Rana temporaria) begin to emerge from hibernation to hop, skip and jump their frenzied way towards traditional breeding sites of ponds, pools, ditches etc. The males are usually first to arrive and begin a chorus of low croaking to serenade the females. The males literally grab the females as they arrive at the spawning sites (no time for shrinking violets here!). A male will jump on the females back and wrap its front legs around her body, clinging on with specially adapted ‘nuptial pads’ on each of its “thumbs”. A female can attract a whole host of suitors who will all try to jump and cling onto her together, so much so that some females end up drowning from this over-zealous attention.

The Personal History of David Copperfield
Released 30 January 2020
From birth to infancy, from adolescence to adulthood, the good-hearted David Copperfield is surrounded by kindness, wickedness, poverty and wealth, as he meets an array of remarkable characters in Victorian England. As David sets out to be a writer, in his quest for family, friendship, romance and status, the story of his life is the most seductive tale of all. The ninth film based on Dickens’ eighth novel, The Personal History of David Copperfield is an impressive addition to the CV of the great Iannucci, who both wrote and directed, it’s an major step up from his previous movie, the more cult-ish The Death of Stalin.

Frog spawn (Photo Justin Ivory)
While the male is attached, the female starts to lay her eggs which the male simultaneously fertilises. Each egg is covered by jelly which swells and offers some protection to the developing embryo. All these jelly covered eggs stick together to form the familiar masses of frogspawn. Two to three weeks later the tiny tadpoles will emerge. Get out in the next few weeks and you could be treated to a great spectacle! Just remember not to disturb the frogs and that it is illegal to remove frog spawn without a licence. A Royal welcome for guitarist Pat Coldrick After a hugely successful 2019, including a sell-out show with the RTE Concert Orchestra in the National Concert Hall, Pat Coldrick is taking to the highways and byways of Ireland for a nationwide tour this year. Pat Coldrick is an Irish classical guitarist and composer who has been described as ‘pushing the boundaries of classical guitar’ with his musical interpretations and compositions and has made classical guitar exciting, interesting and more accessible to music lovers in general. Through his interpretation of music and by exploring and embracing new technologies he strives to enhance the dynamics of the classical guitar and bring his music to a wider audience both at home and abroad. Pat’s musical formation has not followed normal traditional lines. He is mainly self-taught and in a relatively short period of time he has put together an impressive body of work and has gained considerable recognition throughout Ireland and internationally both as a performer and composer. Pat’s skilful and atmospheric connection with his audience is an art form in itself and is in total contrast to
other more formal classical performances. He has a very easy going, laid back and unassuming approach and the approach to audiences at his live shows is to entertain rather than educate. To date Pat has produced 3 albums – Cayendo (2010), CityJam (2014) and the latest Ophelia. Since the launch of these albums his music has been played on all the major radio stations in Ireland and many others abroad. Pat is now widely acknowledged as a very accom-
plished musician and composer who is succeeding in bringing classical guitar music ‘centre stage’ where he so passionately believes it belongs. The new album Ophelia is out now featuring contributions from Irish musicians Finbar Furey, John Sheahan, Daire Bracken and Peter Eades. Theatre royal Saturday 22nd February at 8:00pm. Tickets are priced at €21.00 available from www.theatreroya.ie

did have an opportunity to goal late in the game but Stephen Bennett’s penalty was saved by Westmeath keeper Aaron McHugh. In the final minutes Bennett had the ball in the net but it was ruled out for a square infringement. Waterford had their win, with nine points to spare but there will be far tougher challenges ahead starting with reigning Munster and Allianz League champions Limerick in two weeks time in the Gaelic Grounds.
FOOTBALLERS DEFEAT Having failed to gain the win against Limerick on opening weekend, the Deise travelled to Aughrim on Sunday last to face pointless Wicklow. This was a crucial game for both teams, with the win giving an impetus for the challenges ahead. In the event it was the Garden County who came through on a 2-11 to 1-6 scoreline. The early exchanges saw little between the sides with a Waterford goal
from Darragh Corcoran keeping the sides level early in the tie. The winners however were more clinical and held a halftime advantage 0-8 to 1-1. Two second half goals from Eoin Darcy and Chris O’Brien clinched the win for the hosts despite some excellent points from Jason Curry. Disappointing for Waterford manager Benji Whelan and his charges but that could all change with a win over Wexford next weekend. Littlewoods Ireland Camogie League
A first-half goal from Saoirse McCarthy proved a crucial score as Cork got their noses in front in the first half before pulling away to a 1-18 o 0-12 triumph over Waterford in the opening Littlewoods Ireland Camogie League Division 1 tie at Páirc Uí Chaoimh. McCarthy, who won All-Ireland Minor and Intermediate medals in 2018 and was player of
the match in the latter decider, struck early on when the sides were level on 0-2 apiece. Orla Cronin for Cork and Waterford ace Beth Carton kept the scoreboard ticking over, while the returning Ashling Thompson was also on the mark for the Rebels. That gave Paudie Murray’s crew a 1-10 to 0-8 interval lead and they imposed their superiority in the second half. Waterford’s new manager Fintan O’Brien and coach, former hurling legend Dan Shanahan, had to plan without the considerable Gailltír contingent preparing for the All-Ireland Intermediate Club Camogie Final and saw their gallant players gradually give way as the second half elapsed. Chloe Sigerson, Lauren Homan and Cronin were among the home team’s second-half scorers, and Cronin finished with a personal tally of nine points in an ultimately comfortable triumph.

Smith and Wilson sign with Blues Smith signs from Scottish Championship side Dundee United, while Wilson has joined the Blues from Manchester City. Smith, 22, has spent the first half of the current Scottish season playing with Scottish League two side Cove Rangers where he’s made 8 appearances, netting twice. Wilson, 20, is a graduate of both Cherry Orchard and Manchester City’s youth academies. The highly-rated left-back has also been capped for Ireland at U17, U19, and U21 level. Both spoke to WaterfordFC.ie after putting pen to paper in the RSC earlier today. Smith said he was optimistic of scoring plenty of goals for the Blues. “I’m glad to be here and looking forward to getting started. I know Scotty and Ali and I’ve heard good things about the club. They’ve had good things to say about the team and the club as a whole.

And though my heart is heavy, It’s also full of love, And that’s enough to comfort me, While you’re in heaven above. - Forever in my heart, love always, Marie xxx. Our lives go on without you, But nothing is the same, We have to hide our heartache, When someone speaks your name. Until the joyous day arrives, That we will meet again - From your absolutely heartbroken Mam and Dad xxxxxx To my little brother Gavin, They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal, But neither time nor reason, Will change the way I feel, For no-one knows the heartache, That lies behind my smiles, No-one knows how many times I’ve broken down and cried, I want to tell you something So there won’t be any doubt, You are so wonderful to think of, But so hard to live without. - Miss and love you so much, forever my lil bro, from your completely heartbroken sister Sinéad xxx. To my little brother Gavin, Today’s the anniversary Of the day that I lost you And for a time it felt as though My life has ended too. But loss has taught me many things, And now I face each day; With hope and memories, To help me on my way. And though I’m full of sadness, That you’re no longer here, Your influence still guides me, And I still feel near you. What we share will never die, It lives within my heart, Bringing strength and comfort, While we are apart. - Miss you so much, from your big brother Paul and Lisa xxx. Though you’ve passed before us brother, You’re always in our hearts, And though we’re not together, We’ll never be apart. To lose you when you were so young, Leaves such an empty space, Our only consolation, You’re in a better place.
To my uncle Gavin, A beautiful memory, clearer than gold, Of an uncle whose worth can never be told.
