On your bike for safer school trip THE road to the classroom is to be made safer and easier for four Waterford primary schools. They have been selected for inclusion in the first round of the Safe Routes to School Programme. The Government will provide funds to make it easier for pupils to walk and cycle to the schools. There will be upgraded footpaths, new cycle lanes, safer school entrances and cycle and scooter parking. More than 900 schools expressed an interest in the programme but only 170 made it to the first round. The four Waterford schools are: Waterford ETNS, Carrickphierish Road; Glór na Mara National School, Tramore; Garranbane NS, Dungarvan and Our Lady of Mercy NS, Stradbally. Minister of State Mary Butler, Waterford’s Fianna Fáil TD, had good news for schools that missed ot this year. “The good news for the schools who have not been selected for funding within this first round is that those who

Waterford City and County Council will conduct a detailed assessment of the requirements of each school. There is good news, meanwhile, for another Waterford school. St Declan’s Community College has been granted approval to proceed to tender for a major extension. The planned extension includes six mainstream classrooms, a technology room and a technology prep room . “This is brilliant news for the entire school community at St Declan’s and the surrounding area,” said Ms Butler. “I have a close attachment to the school as it’s the school where I was educated and my youngest is going into Transition Year there. “This planned extension is vitally important and muchneeded. St Declan’s is a victim of its own success, as enrolment is consistently growing year on year.”

WATERFORD hurling legend Ken McGrath fears he is falling out of love with the sport. Hurling has gone soft and some matches are boring, he told a newspaper. “For years, the clash of the ash was what we were brought up on,” said the Mount Sion man. “Now a clash of the ash is a free,” he told The Sun. “ I don’t think we should be taking the physicality out of the game. It’s not a basketball
match, it’s a hurling match.” McGrath (43) said that, for the first time in his life, he had turned off some NFL games. He called on referees to let matches flow “Don’t get me wrong, a foul is a foul and if a player is fouling they should be punished with a free,” he said. “But some of the frees, early on in the league especially, were so tame. It was just stop-start and there’s no flow to the game “I don’t know if I know the game anymore”

Bank and Garda on alert for scams
GARDAÍ and a bank have warned people in Waterford to beware of scammers. Recent incidents reported to Garda involve the caller informing the victim that their name has been used by someone caught committing a crime and in order to have proceedings stopped they need to pay a sum of money. The caller indicates that a call will come from a named garda at a named Garda station. The victim then receives a call from what appears to be the genuine Garda station. Bank of Ireland has issued a warning to the Waterford public advising about a spike in ‘smishing’, where fraudsters send fake text messages, which appear to come from Bank of Ireland, and direct customers to fake websites imitating Bank of Ireland websites. Bank of Ireland sayas it will never send a text with a link to a website that asks you for your online banking login details or any one-time codes that the bank has sent to you.
‘Don’t point finger at pub’ for big Covid spike
A PUB in Dungarvan has been unfairly blamed for a Covid outbreak of up to 200 cases, neighbours and customers say. They say it is unfair to blame one venue for the spike in infections in west Waterford. A gathering outside Merry’s Gastro Pub, after a funeral, is suspected as a source of the problem. “I feel very bad for the people who got the virus, but I feel it’s very unfair that the pub got targeted,” owner Emilene Stafford told the Irish Independent. She said good weather had drawn people from all over the country to west Waterford and there was mixing at premises other than the pub, which has been shut for most of the year and is only providing an outdoor service. Locals have been generally supportive of the pub. Cllr Cono Mcguiness said finger pointing was not helpful. “There is a lot of travel between counties and west Waterford is a popular destination,” said the Sinn Féin councillor. The National Public Health Emergency Team (Nphet) insisted, however, that the outbreak “started in a pub” and spread into the community. The Deputy Chief Medical
Officer, Dr Ronan Glynn, said it was a complex outbreak which spread out to a range of different settings, in the local community and beyond. The HSE/South East Community Healthcare noted the outbreak “with concern”. “As instanced by cases of Covid-19 continuing to present daily in every county, the possibility of the Delta variant is an obvious threat,” it said in a statement. But Waterford’s new mayor, Cllr Joe Kelly, said Delta had not been confirmed. “There is indeed talk of it being the Delta variant,” he said. “But I was in touch with the HSE, and it takes two to three weeks to confirm that particular variant, so that is not confirmed yet.” A Waterford priest, meanwhile, has backed down on a threat to go ahead with Confirmations and First Communions, against Government advice. Fr Michael Toomey had said he would defy the “off the cuff” advice unless instructed otherwise by his bishop. Fr Toomey, administrator of the parishes of Ardfinnan, Ballybacon and Newcastle, called off the events after a meeting with Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan.
Court clears way for Glanbia plant THE High Court has cleared the way for Glanbia’s cheesemanufacturing plant at Belview. It rejected an appeal against planning permission by An Taisce, the national trust. Permission had been granted by the local authority and An Bord Pleanála but An Taisce claimed they had not taken account of the environmental effects of the extra milk production needed. Irish Farmers’ Association president, Tim Cullinan, said construction of the cheese plant should proceed without delay. Glanbia has indicated that it may be 2024 or 2025 before the plant is operational. Mr Cullinan said the project a joint venture with Dutch dairy
firm, Royal A-ware - had been fully considered by Kilkenny County Council, An Bord Pleanála, and the High Court “Objecting for the sake of it is an abuse of the system,” he said. An Taisce said it was “very disappointed” and would review the judgment and assess its options. People Before Profit Waterford issued a statement saying it shared An Taisce’s disappointment . “It is widely and internationally accepted that dairy farming is hugely harmful to the environment and that transitioning within the Agri and Dairy sector are imminent, which is where the jobs will be,” it said.

Short supply is driving up house prices
THE price of the average second-hand three-bed semi in Waterford city has risen 4.3% to €240,000 in the last three months, according to a national survey by Real Estate Alliance. The market in Waterford county saw a 5.4% increase this quarter to €195,000, the REA Average House Price Index shows. It is one of three recent surveys that show Waterford’s house prices have been rising more steepily outside the city. A study by Daft.ie showed an increase in the county of 9.5%, with prices in the city static. A MyHome.ie Property Report found that prices in Waterford have risen by €3,540 during the quarter. It found that asking prices for a 3-bed semi-detached house here remained unchanged over the quarter at €185,000. That is an increase of €6,000
compared to this time last year. The asking price for a 4-bed semi-detached house in Waterford increased by €1,000 over the quarter to €220,000. All three surveys reported that shortage of supply was driving up prices. The Daft and MyHome surveys are based on the asking prices for property. The REA survey concentrates on the actual sale price of Ireland’s typical stock home, the threebed semi. The REA survey found that, in Waterford city, the average time taken to sell a 3-bed property fell during the quarter to four weeks. in the county in dropped by a fortnight to six weeks. “We are seeing a shortage of supply driving price up through competitive bidding,” said Des O’Shea of REA O’Shea O’Toole, Waterford city.
F uelled by pent-up demand and the return of physical viewing, the marketplace is also seeing the lowest supply and the shortest time taken to sell in recent history. “The activity has increased further this quarter, with sales agreed in a shorter window as demand is increasing further over supply,” said Eamonn Spratt of REA Spratt, Dungarvan. “The prices for second hand homes has been strengthened by reason of newly constructed homes taking longer to be completed.” The MyHome survey found that the number of properties for sale in Waterford was flat over the last quarter. It found that the average time for a property to go ‘sale agreed’ in the county after being placed up for sale now stands at four months.

Hummingbird Hawk-moth feeding. Pic: Justin Ivory While counting butterflies and bumblebees on recent trips to Kilruddery Gardens in Bray and Mount Usher Gardens in Ashford I was brought to a halt by the sound of humming and then the sight of an unexpected creatures flitting from flower to flower – Hummingbirds! Similar reports have been flooding in from all over the country. Hummingbirds in Ireland! You’ve got to be kidding! Well yes and no is the answer. These particular aeronautical masters are not birds at all but one of the coolest, most amazing insects you are likely to encounter in Ireland. They are in fact Hummingbird Hawk-moths (Macroglossum stellatarum). This day flying moth resembles a hummingbird as it hovers with an audible hum in front of flowers feeding on the nectar with its long tongue or more correctly proboscis. It is particularly fond of Red Valerian as well as Fuschia, Jasmine and Campion and many other species.

fear street Netflix (early July)
A Crooked Tree has been notching up rave reviews, described as “a devastating journey through family life in suburban ’80s America, which explores how actions have terrible unintended consequences.’ “What none of them know as they drive off leaving their 12-year-old sister on the side of the road five miles from home, with the dark closing in around her, is what will happen next..” Philadephia-born, and a Sligo resident and lecturer, Mannion won the Doolin, Cúirt, Allingham and Ambit short story prizes. Her work has been published in The Irish Times, The Lonely Crowd, Crannóg and Bare Fiction.
IN the final episode of this inspiring series set in Bray, Co Wicklow, cameras follow Joni, a 15-year-old aspiring actress and musician, as she juggles filming for a television series and her school work. Joni listens to Morrissey as she walks along the seafront of her coastal town. A rising star, she has already had a lot of success in her short career and has her hopes set on becoming the next Saoirse Ronan or Kurt Cobain. The series is narrated by Jasmin (pictured), a local young woman. She is 29 years of age and is a proud mixed race Irish national — her mother is from Co. Wicklow
In 1994, a group of teenagers discover the terrifying events that have haunted their town for generations may all be connected — and they may be the next targets. Based on R.L. Stine’s best-selling horror series, Fear Street follows Shadyside’s sinister history through a nightmare 300 years in the making and is all set to induce a frenzy in the family room, which has not been seen since Stranger Things. The film trilogy, which will be released over three Fridays and started on July 2nd, is also split across three separate time periods: 1994, 1978, and 1666. It all looks a bit . . . Screamy, but hey, it’s three nights killed off all the same.

Helpless ministers need to take back control from Nphet
T
THE Government has been trying hard to undo the harm caused by its decision to continue the ban on pubs and restaurants serving indoors. It has extended the vaccination programme and is in talks with the hospitality industry. But the damage has been done and it goes far beyond pubs and restaurants The problem wasn’t so much the ban as the helpless, hapless way it was announced. It killed the mood of optimism that had been growing in step with the vaccination rollout and destroyed faith in the judgment of senior ministers. The decision was made not by the elected Government but by Nphet which, on such matters, appears to be the real government. For 15 months I have accepted
Michael Wolsey
the wisdom of Nphet. They are medical experts, after all. Yes, they have been cautious. but I approved of caution, even an abundance of caution. But this time they got it wrong.. It does not take medical expertise to see the flaw in Nphet’s advice. It is based on a ‘worst case’ that is only possible on the basis that nothing can ever be ruled out entirely. It predicts a far higher rate of Covid infection, hospitalisation and death than arose last summer when pubs serving food were allowed to open. Since then a large section of the population has been vaccinated and the success of the vaccine is reflected in the HSE’s figures. The Delta variant is pushing up the infection rate but Covid numbers in hospitals are as low as they have been since the start of the pandemic. Numbers in ICU are proportionately down.
Nphet’s ‘worst case’ model suggests a possible 700,000 new Covid cases between July and the end of September and 2,170 deaths. That’s an infection rate of more than 8,000 a day. Even last January, at the height of the pandemic, that figure was not reached. Last September, after pubs had been opened for indoor dining, the daily figure was around 350. It rose above 1,000 in October and dipped back below 300 in early December. At no time did it reach 8,000 - and there was then no vaccination programme to help matters. In December, when infection figures were similar to those now being recorded, there were more than 200 Covid cases in hospital; on Monday the figure was 48. That’s the difference the vaccine makes. In England, where the Delta variant has been spreading fast,
the infection rate is as high as it was in January but the consequences are much less severe. On January 30, when the vaccination level was low, England recorded 1,200 Covid deaths; on June 30, it recorded three. In devising its models, Nphet did not take account of changes in our vaccine policy which will speed-up delivery to younger people and, according to the HSE, should see the entire adult population vaccinated by early September. The decision which opened the way for this wonderful achievement came too late to influence Nphet’s advice to the Government. But the team seems to have disregarded the value of even the existing vaccine programme when devising its ‘worst case’ forecast. The vaccine may not be able to halt the advance of the Delta variant but all the evidence everywhere says it will greatly
reduce the levels of hospitalisation, serious illness and death. It gives us a chance worth taking. If we stay forever huddled in the shadow of Nphet’s ‘worst case’ we will never get back to normal life. The opening of pubs and restaurants is not, in itself, a matter of great importance. Well, it is if you own or work in one, but after all this time without them, the country can wait another few weeks. But it’s like waiting for Godot. The Government did not set a date for re-opening, suggesting instead this ill-considered idea of vaccine passports which it is discussing with the publicans and restaurateurs. They are wary of the plan because they know it is likely to be vetoed by the real government. Tanaiste Leo Varadkar says ministers need “a few weeks” to sort things out. Sorting out Nphet’s role would be a good start.

3rd Anniversary MARTIN HARTE
In loving memory of Martin Harte, late of Francis Street and formerly the Glen, whose 3rd anniversary occurs on June 30th. I wish I could see you one more time Come walking through the door But I know that is impossible I will hear your voice no more. I know you can feel my tears And you don’t want me to cry Yet my heart is broken because I can’t understand why Someone so precious had to die. I pray that God will give me strength And somehow get me through As I struggle with this heartache That came when I lost you - Miss you always, and never forgotten, from your soulmate Pat. Rest in peace.
You held my hand When I was small, You caught me when I fell, You’re the hero of my childhood And my later years as well. Every time I think of you, My heart just fills with pride, Though I will always miss you dad, I know you’re by my side. In laughter and in sorrow, In sunshine and in rain, I know you’re watching over me, Until we meet again. - Happy birthday, miss you, Corina, Adrian and grandson Ethan. Happy Birthday memories Dad, Fill your heart today, With all the warmth I’ve missed so much, Since you went away, I knew that I could turn to you, If every thing went wrong, And you’d be there to help me, Gentle, kind and strong. And when I stop and think about, The lovely time we had, I long to know you once again, For being a perfect Dad. You guided and brought me strength, You filled each day with love, And now you send me courage, From your resting place above. - Missed and loved always by your daughter Natalie, son in law Barry and grandson Theodore. What would I give, to clasp his hand, His happy face to see, To hear his voice, and see his smile That meant so much to me. The rolling stream, of life rolls on, But still the vacant chair, Recalls the love, the voice, the smile, Of the one, who once sat there. - Happy birthday, miss you, love your daughter Caroline. My heart still aches in sadness, My silent tears still flow, For what it meant to lose you, No one will ever knoe. Although you cannot be here with me, We’re truly not apart, Until the final breath I take, You’ll be living in my heart. Dearest Dad, to hear your voice, And see your smile, And just to sit and talk to you a while, Would be my dearest wish today, On this your birthday. - Miss you, your daughter Sandra.

Although we smile and make no fuss, No one misses you more than us, And when old times we do recall, That’s when we miss you most of all. - From Lillian and Erin
Loving Birthday Remembrance for John Grey, late of 215 Ballybeg Park, who died on the 8th December 2007, and whose 37th birthday occurs on the 5th July. If I could only see you, For just a little while, To tell you that I miss you, And see your lovely smile, No matter how I spend my day, No matter what I do, Before I close my eyes at night, I pray and think of you. Meet me in my dreams, Please talk to me once more, Ease my everlasting pain, That makes my heart so sore, I know you walk beside me, And when my life is through, I pray that God will take my hand, And lead me straight to you. Of all the things that I have done, Or as I listen to the words of a song that you have sung, Often I feel so sad, That the tears start to flow, It’s then I really miss you, More than anyone can know. When last I looked upon your face, I tried hard not to cry, I bent down and kissed you, And then I said goodbye. To hold you close, And talk to you, And see your gentle face once more, But God would never grant this wish, God knows if I had you back, I would never let you go. - Happy Birthday John, love always, your heartbroken Mam
Someone kind and true, You will never be forgotten, For we thought the world of you, Sunshine passes & shadows fall, But love and memories outlast them all. - Love, your brother Michael I often lie awake at night, When the world is fast asleep, I think about the brother I lost, With tears upon my cheek, I cannot get over losing you John, I don’t even want to try, I will always keep you in my heart, Until the day I die. Softly the leaves of memory fall, Gently I gather and treasure them all, Memories have such lovely ways, Of bringing back yesterdays. - Happy Birthday John, loved and missed by your brother Mark
When we last saw your smiling face, You looked so bright and well, Little did we know that day was to be your last farewell, To us you were someone special,
Too young to die, Too precious to lose, Precious people are very few, That’s why John, There was only one of you. That awful day you left us, Is always on our mind, And though we try to reason why, No answers can we find, God must have known how much we’d hurt, The day He made us part, When He took away our lovely John, He surely broke our hearts. He must have had His reasons, A mystery, still to us, He must have had a special place, That no one else can fill. We miss your sunny nature, Your smiling happy face, And no one in the world, Could ever take your place, You’ll never be forgotten, I’m sure you know that’s true, You can’t forget someone you love, As much as we love you. Once special person, one special face, And in our hearts a special place, No words, no verse, can really say, What we feel on this your birthday. We want to tell you something, So there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think of But so hard to live without.
