Families stunned by trawler tragedy THE fishing community of Waterford and Wexford has been plunged into mourning by the tragedy which cost two lives when a trawler went down off Hook Head. It was the worst possible start to the new year for the closeknit communities of Dunmore East, Kilmore Quay and the surrounding villages and townlands. Joe Sinnott (65), from Kilmore Quay, died at University Hospital Waterford where he was taken after being winced from the sea. As we went to press, a search was still underway for Willie Whelan (41) from from Fethard-on-Sea, who was presumed dead. The search was being hampered by extremely bad weather. Mr Whelan was skipper of the Alize which had been fishing for scallops. The Coastguard service detected emergency signals from the trawler on Saturday night. The signals came from the

Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon, an automatic alarm, activated when a boat is submerged. Two units of the RNLI, rescue helicopters from Waterford and Dublin and the naval vessel LE Ciara have been involved in the search along with up to 20 trawlers. The cause of the tragedy remains a mystery.

Cllr Ger Carthy told RTÉ that “something catastrophic” must have happened for the trawler to go down so quickly without the crew being able to send a distress signal. Cllr Carthy described Mr Sinnot as a man with fishing in his DNA. “He spent his life working at sea. It is in the family’s blood,” he said.

Cllr Carthy said that tragedies like this have a lasting effect on the community which he described as “very tight.” Neighbours, friends and the wider community gathered at the Sinnott house to comfort Mary and the family on their loss. “The first we knew was around 11pm after the signal from the boat was received by the Coastguard in Dublin who then in turn contacted the owner,” Joe’s son Michael told reporters. “He was so many years at sea, and the man who was with him too, so whatever happened wasn’t down to a lack of experience.” Dunmore East RNLI, Kilmore Quay RNLI and Fethard RNLI lifeboat crews were involved in the search Tony Kelly of Dunmore East RNLI said all involved in the search had endured difficult conditions. “Our hearts go out to the families of the two fishermen at this sad time,” he said.

Scanner sits idle while UHW buys a new one

Eight-week wait for boiler repairs

FAMILIES are waiting up to eight weeks to have gas boilers repaired in local authority houses, a Waterford councillor has claimed. “It is is just not good enough,” said Cllr Joe Kelly.“I’m aware of people waiting weeks in winter to have their gas boiler repaired while they are freezing in their homes. Many are elderly, others have children in the house. “The current system is not fit for purpose. Unfortunately, council must hire private contractors to carry out these repairs by public tender. The council waits until there are 10 or 12 separate repairs needed, and these are bundled together as a job lot and then put out to tender. Eventually a contractor wins the tender and they can begin doing the repairs. Meanwhile, the householder must wait without heat or hot water”. Cllr Kelly called for a tendering process with a contract for annual work advertised. “One or two suppliers could then be selected to do the work,” he said. “This would give continuity of repairs to our householders, reduce waiting times and would be a better service”.

Al shows Gold Cup class

CHELTENHAM Gold Cup winner Al Boum Photo got his season off to a winning start at Tramore on New Year’s Day. The Willie Mullins trained eight-year-old won the feature race, the Savills New Years Day Steeplechase. Paul Townend, who also guided him to victory for the Gold Cup last March, was on board as he came in

ahead of stablemate Acapella Bourgeois and the Gordan Elliott trained Shattered Love. Speaking to Racing TV, Mullins said he was happy with how the race went but it was stressful to watch. “It was worse than watching the Gold Cup,” he said. “Paul was wondering did he give him too hard a race but I think he needed a hard race.”

What has become of cardiac review?

SINN Féin TD David Cullinane has asked health minister Simon Harris for an update on the National Review into Specialist Cardiac Services. The review will determine whether University Hospital Waterford will be able to provide a round-the-clock cardiac care service. “This review was initiated in 2017 and first met in January 2018. We are now into 2020 and no report has yet been published,” the Waterford deputy said . “This is a huge issue for the people of the South East. People quite rightly demand safe and assessable cardiac services and this means a 24/7 PPCI service for the region. “I have written to the Minister for Health requesting a timetable for the completion and the publication of this review. “Patients in the South East deserve the best outcomes and 24 hour availability of emergency cardiac care is the best way to achieve this.” The minister established the review in late 2017.

AN expensive CT scanner has been largely unused at University Hospital Waterford, although there is a lengthy waiting list for the service. And the hospital is reported to have replaced one of its two scanners with a new one despite the under-use of the equipment. The revelations are made in a briefing paper prepared for Health Minister Simon Harris and released to a daily newspaper under Freedom of Information legislation. The Irish Mirror’s report blamed “staff shortages” at University Hospital Waterford (UHW) for failure to use the scanner, which was bought six years ago. The under-use first emerged in 2015 when the HSE admitted that the scanner, which cost more than €1 million, had been left idle for almost a year. It said the delay had been “to allow for training and commissioning requirements”. More than four years later, the Irish Mirror has revealed that “staffing issues prevented both scanners from operating simultaneously, and the second machine has only ever been used as a back-up when the main scanner breaks down or undergoes maintenance”. The newspaper also reported that the hospital purchased a third CT scanner last year to replace the older of the two existing machines, despite the fact that only one of them was

ever regularly used. A CT scanner is used to conduct a full body scan and can detect many illnesses, including heart disease and some forms of cancer. There is a waiting list of up to six months for a scan at UHW. The issue of the scanners was raised in the Dáil in February 2015 by independent TD (now Minister of State) John Halligan. He was told by then health minister Leo Varadkar that the operation of a second scanner required additional staff, and a business case was being prepared for extra personnel. However, a briefing paper prepared for current Minister for Health Simon Harris last April noted that the second CT scanner was still not in use “due to staffing constraints” despite being required “to meet demand”. The Philips scanner was purchased at the start of 2014 as part of a new €1.75 million CT unit at UHW, using a €400,000 donation from Waterford City and County Infirmary Trust. The hospital’s spokeswoman told the Irish Mirror that the Siemens Definition AS Plus scanner was purchased in August 2018 to replace the older Siemens machine, which had been installed around 2002. She confirmed that only one of two CT scanners at UHW has been in use due to staffing issues, except when a backup was required due to breakdowns or maintenance.

Bars unite to slap a ban on troublemakers

A SCHEME that gave Waterford’s’s bars a happy holiday may be extended throughout the year. Nightclubs and bars came together to ban persistent troublemaker during Christmas

and the new year. CitySafe co-ordinated communication between the city’s night spots. People barred from a venue for anti-social behaviour found themselves banned from other clubs and bars.

The scheme involved bars and clubs in the area of John Street, Parnell Street and Manor Street. There are now plans to extend it to a wider area throughout the year. Ross Cahill who oversees a 20-strong team providing security to many of the bars said the aim was is to eventually bring all city centre pubs and hotels into the scheme. If someone is banned from one venue, they will be barred from them all. A decision to ban someone will be taken by the CitySafe committee, which Mr Cahill chairs. If the committee decides to bar someone, the alleged troublemaker will be informed the next time they seek entry to one of the venues. If they’re unhappy with the decision, they can appeal, and speak to Mr Cahill about the decision. “I do think part of it is just making people aware of their behaviour,” he said. A decision to bar someone will not be taken lightly, he said, and they would be “very casreful” to ensurethat nobody was banned because a doorman had a personal dislike of them.

Family-friendly puppy classes

MORE than 9,800 dogs ended up in pounds across Ireland last year, 329 of them in Waterford. Of the Waterford dogs, 201 were reclaimed or rehomed and a further 124 were transferred to an animal welfare provider. The problem is at its worst in the weeks after Christmas when people sometimes find that owning a dog is

more difficult than they had expected. To help integrate a new dog into the family, pet retailer Petmania hosts free monthly Puppy Care Classes with everything you need to know to care for, feed and protect the wellbeing of your new dog. Craig Power from Petmania Waterford said, “For anyone who was lucky enough to get the gift of a new puppy

this Christmas we highly recommend Petmania’s free Puppy Care Classes.” The next Puppy Care Class is Saturday, January 11. Places are limited and booking is encouraged. J

anuary is traditionally the time for making New Year resolutions. One resolution I would recommend you make for 2020 is to review your existing retirement plans with a qualified pension adviser. Because retirement plans are generally for the long term 25 to 40 years in most cases, a regular review is very important. This is because much changes as we go through our life cycle and a pension review allows you to take stock of your current situation and the changes that have occurred to it since your last review. A review allows you to look at how your current pension arrangements have fared and lets you see if the plan is performing as well as you had hoped. You can decide to change the investment strategy, if that is considered necessary or desirable. You can assess if the current premiums are sufficient to meet your pension income goal or if you need to increase regular payments or simply add a single pension contribution. We all lead very busy lives

nual report and even fewer of us bother to keep track of our plans online. We therefore don’t know if we are on track with our expected retirement income. Most people tell us they do not know what type of funds their pension is invested in and they also are unaware that they may be able to arrange a Pension Term Insurance policy and claim back income tax relief on the premiums payable. Because we all have different expectations of how our lives will be at retirement, a review of your retirement plans is designed to be as individual as you are. At a pension review meeting, you can discuss all aspects of your plan; you will receive a personalised report outlining what was discussed, the details of all recommendations made and what was agreed. Because regular pension reviews are free of charge, you have only one decision to make - when can I arrange a pension review meeting?

Bad debt legacy ‘close to endgame’ SEVEN bankruptcies were declared last year in Waterford city and county. The figure translates at just over six bankruptcies per 100,000 population. The highest rate of bankruptcy (16.67 per 100,000) was in Co Offaly, according to figures for the year compiled by Stubbs Gazette. The second highest rate (13.14) was in Cavan. There were no bankruptcies in two counties, Carlow and Leitrim. Data compiled by Stubbs Gazette reveals that while there was an increase in the number of debt judgments being registered, the overall value of these slumped by a quarter compared to 2018. Stubbs Gazette managing director James Treacy said the figures were significant. “They indicate the economy has washed out a lot of the bad debt that was a legacy of the bust,” he said. “It does take a while for this to happen after a financial crisis. Bankruptcies are usually the final manifestation of bad debt, so it looks like we are coming to the endgame of that.”

Chilly dip raises funds

THE DEATH OF STALIN The opening of this movie shows Stalin going through a number of lists which are collected from him before he moves on to other business. The camera follows the lists where they are distributed to a number of KGB operatives and instructions are given in relation to certain names on the lists, such as to make sure a certain man can hear his wife being tortured in the cell next to his. Stalin didn’t do the dirty business of his regime at one remove. He personally sent tens of thousands of people to their deaths and millions of others into the Gulag. When one person has this much control over a country it is always going to be interesting to see what happens when that person dies and this is what this film does. Naturally, all of the people around Stalin were as implicated as he was in what happened during his reign and there was never a sense that things would change very much after Stalin’s death. But the killings, on an industrial scale, could stop if the right person got the top job and the jockeying for position is the intriguing part of this movie. We all know that Kruschev got the job but what would it have been like if someone else, very much like Stalin became leader? This almost happened in the form of the head of the Security Services Comrade Beria, a notorious murderer and rapist - it did at one point after Stalin’s death look like he might be the new leader. Only some adroit management and alliances between Kruschev, other top men and the head of the armed forces stopped Beria in his tracks. His downfall was swift and ruthless. Shot and burned within minutes of a trial. Of Stalin’s remaining children his daughter was sent abroad where she wouldn’t be a focus of opposition in the Soviet Union and his son was kept at home, a volatile alcoholic who couldn’t cross the road without causing problems. Blackly humourous with some great performances this is an intriguing piece of history that more people should know about.

Goggle Box

THE CHASE This movie tells the story of landlord in rural South Korea who is only interested in getting his rent on time and having as little to do with others as possible. One day he makes a connection with another elderly man following the death of one of his tenants. The man tells him about a serial killer active in the town some years ago and how he believes it is happening again. When a young woman, another tenant, goes missing the landlord sets out to find her. Full of twists and turns and a great ending.

House prices for city ease in line with trend

HOUSE prices are starting to fall across the country but are still rising in Waterford, a survey has found. The property website Daft.ie reported that nationally housing prices fell by 1.2% during 2019 but rose by 3% in Waterford city and 2% in the rest of Waterford. However, a survey by MyHome.ie showed prices in Waterford to be static, broadly in line with the national trend. Daft.ie reported that in Waterford city, prices in the final quarter of 2019 were 3% higher than a year previously, compared to a rise of 9% seen a year ago. It put the average house price in the city at €181,000, 72% above its lowest point. In the rest of Waterford, prices in the final quarter of 2019 were 2% higher than a year previously, compared to a rise of 7% seen

a year ago. The average house price in the county is now €223,000, 55% above its lowest point. In Ireland housing prices fell by 1.2% during 2019, the first calendar year recording a fall in prices since 2012, according to the latest Daft.ie Sales Report . The average price nationwide in the final quarter of the year was €250,766, 2.4% lower than in the third quarter and 1.2% lower than a year ago. Daft.ie found that in Dublin, prices in the third quarter of 2019 were 1% lower than a year previously, compared to a fall of 3% seen a year ago. The average house price in the capital is now €366,000, 26% below peak levels. The MyHome survey found that the annual rate of house asking price inflation nationwide has fallen to less than 1% and the

asking price inflation in Dublin is zero year-on-year. For Waterford it put the average house price at €175,000, with inflation static for the year. Author of the MyHome report Conall MacCoille, chief economist at Davy, said the slowdown in inflation was inevitable. “Central Bank rules have stopped first-time buyers taking out too much mortgage debt and should lead to more realistic asking prices,” he said. “Our analysis shows that the average residential transaction in Ireland (€292,000) is now 6.8x the average income of €43,000. “This is only slightly below the UK’s ratio of 7x.” “This is the first time since 2012 that Ireland’s house-priceto-income ratio has declined,” said Mr MacCoille.

Opinion&Comment

A life less ordinary

O

ut of the many tributes that have been paid to the late Marian Finucane there are two elements to her personality that stand out. The first is her thorough professionalism when it came to her broadcasting career and the second was her humane and caring nature. The first might bring you so far in broadcasting but it was the combination of the two that made the woman a legend in the business. A student of architecture in Bolton Street during the Seventies she was involved in student protests during that time, trying to preserve as much of Dublin’s unique Georgian heritage. After graduation she started work in RTE and soon her career began to flourish. Her first was as a continuity announcer but within a few short years she was presenting a new sort of programme called ‘Women Today’ for which she received an industry award. The landscape of Irish journalism at that time was not exactly receptive to female journalists and for the most, women were relegated to minor roles where their main role was to be decorative and not voice strong opinions. That would never be the path for Marian Finucane and she was amongst a new wave of Irish female journalists that would lead the way for others. In fact in all of the many tributes paid to Finucane by other female journalists the common theme is how she paved the way for other women in the industry. Broadcasting is a fiercely competitive industry and to be at the top of your field for 40 years is no small achievement but Finucane managed it despite the major set back of the death of her young daughter. It would be something that she would never be drawn on and she always refused to talk about it drawing the distinct line, for her, between what was public and what was private. Through her long career at RTE, like Gay Byrne before her, she provided a much needed sense of continuity for the Irish public. People knew where they were with Marian Finucane, equally at home with the personal, such as Leo Varadkar’s interview about his sexuality, as she was at bringing politicians and bureaucrats to task. That was the essential essence of Marian Finucane, she had the easy skill and experience of a master interviewer. Her death came as a shock but her legacy will be long lasting.

PEOPLE with symptoms of flu should see their GP before turning up at University Hospital Waterford, the hospital has said. In a statement the hospital said: “The Emergency Department at UHW is currently extremely busy and in the interest of patient safety, the hospital is reminding the public that they should only present at the ED when referred by their local GP. “It is also important to note, It is not too late to get the flu vaccine and it is provided free of charge for people in atrisk groups, which includes everyone aged 65 years and over, pregnant women, anyone over six months of age with a long term illness requiring regular medical follow-up such as chronic lung disease, chronic heart disease, diabetes, cancer or those with lower immunity.” Visitor restrictions remain in place at the hospital in order to help prevent the spread of flu. The hospital has appealed to people to only attend if it is absolutely necessary

Praise for clean city despite some blackspots WATERFORD city has been praised in the latest litter survey report but there is criticism for Ballybeg, the bring centre outside the Bus Eireann depot and a number of sites which have been used for dumping. The city is rated Cleaner than European Norms in the final litter survey of 2019 by business group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL). It occupies eleventh spot in the ranking of 40 towns and cities. But Ballybeg has failed to retain its ‘clean’ status of 2018 and is rated ‘moderately littered’. The An Taisce report for Waterford city centre says: “Waterford city continues to score highly ... the Waterford Walls initiative is very much a feature throughout the city – this project is something that could easily be replicated in other towns / cities throughout

the country.” The report praises “many top ranking sites in Waterford city” particularly the People’s Park, the court house, the cultural quarter, Barronstrand Street, the River Walk and Plunkett Train Station. It criticises the Bring Centre outside the Bus Eireann Depot – “the overall presentation was a very poor one” - and a “heavily littered stretch of road (at) Penrose Street.” The report for Ballybeg says: “It is disappointing that in both IBAL surveys in 2019, Ballybeg failed to retain the ‘clean’ status it had earned the previous year. Fewer than half of the sites examined were free of litter.” It says that “by far the lowest ranking site was common land by St. Saviour’s GAA Club – this wasn’t just littered but subject to major dumping.”

Some good news, just for a change

Y

ou would never guess from the Irish media in general, but we have a lot to be happy about this new year. For one thing, we are living longer. On average, an Irish man can now hope to live until he is a little over 80 and a woman until she is 84. That’s an increase of two and half years since 2007 when the Department of Health last published its Key Trends survey. One reason for this extended life span may be a dramatic decrease in the number of people smoking. Our alcohol consumption is also down, according to figures from the World Health Organisation. And more of us are taking exercise - running, in particular. A survey by World Athletics found that Ireland has more runners, as a percentage of its population, than any other country, crossing the line just ahead of the Netherlands.

So we are living longer, healthier lives. And we have a good country to live longer in. The very best in the world, according the Good Country Index which ranks nations by their overall contribution to humanity, using 35 separate indicators supplied by the United Nations, the World Bank and other international institutions. It puts Ireland in first place, a little ahead of Finland, Switzerland, and the Netherlands; comfortably in front of New Zealand, Sweden and the UK and a mile in advance of the USA and China. The criteria for success include “prosperity and equality” and “health and well-being”. Ireland does well in both categories, and that view is supported by another survey, the United Nations’ Human Development Index, which ranks 189 countries for their general quality of living. Ireland is placed third behind Norway and Switzerland. The World Economic Forum,

meanwhile, has found that Ireland is the seventh best country in the world for gender equality. So, all in all, it’s hardly surprising that Ireland is regarded as a very good country to head for in retirement. The Global Retirement Index places us at number four, with a score of 87 (out of 100) for health, 83 for quality of life and 71 for material well-being. Comparable figures for the winner, Iceland , were 85, 86 and 91. At the other end of the age scale, the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment has found that Irish students are among the best readers in the developed world which may explain, in part, why a survey of global reputations gave Ireland an “excellent” rating, showing us to be the tenth most respected country in the world. At the start of a new year, many organisations publish surveys of this sort. Trawling through them, and I

was amazed at how much good news they reveal about Ireland. Amazed, because we don’t seem to like good news any more. Our media and many of our politicians concentrate almost exclusively on what is bad, stressing the negative, ignoring the positive. I am no Pollyanna. I am well aware that this country is far from wonderful if you are trying to raise your family in one room of a hotel or if you are waiting for days on a trolley in a hospital emergency department. Our society is leaving too many people behind. We need to do better. But that does not alter the fact that Ireland - which has seen terrible times in its history - is doing well. We are extremely lucky to live at such a good time in such a good country, knowing that, whatever clouds may be on the horizon, most of us can look forward to a happy new year. - Michael Wolsey

Welcome to part 2 of our Go Wild in 2020 series, listing simple actions you can take to make your garden a wilder and more environmentally friendly place in 2020. 4. Take Up Boxing No we’re not talking about becoming the next Katie Taylor! Putting up bird boxes, bat boxes and providing hedgehog homes is a great way of adding artificial shelters to your garden.

Bird boxes and bat boxes give wildlife places to shelter and breed (Photo Justin Ivory) 5. Don’t forget the mammals Hedgehogs, foxes and badgers can all be garden visitors and will benefit from the correct food being left out for them. Foods such as dog or cat food, mealworms, peanuts, raw or cooked meats, crushed dog biscuits are all good. Please do not put out milk for hedgehogs as they are lactose intolerant. Also, in general, feeding bread to wildlife is not a good idea. It is too loaded in salt and sugar. It bloats the animal making it feel full but at the same time offering very little of value to sustain the animal or meet its energy needs.

Urban fox (Photo Justin Ivory) 6. Save the Slugs Don’t use slug pellets to kill snails and slugs. This introduces harmful toxins into the food chain which has devastating consequences on other creatures that feed on slugs and snails such as birds and mammals. Slugs and snails are an important food source for many animals as well as having other important roles to play in the ecosystem. So, leave them be. If you really can’t tolerate them, then pick them up at night, put them in a bucket and transfer them to the nearest hedgerow.

How to Be Good with Money Thursday 9 January 2020, RTE1 @ 8.30pm

Little Women Released 2nd January 2020

The explosive conclusion to the New York Times bestselling Arc of a Scythe series. Shusterman paints a world where death has been vanquished, nanotechnolgy means nobody has to feel pain and every perons’s needs are met by the controlling artificial intelligence known as The Thunderhead. But there’s a catch. To ensure the world doesn’t return to overpopulation, official executioenrs know as ‘scythes’ must kill a certain number of people every month. In this pulse-pounding finale to Neal Shusterman’s internationally bestselling trilogy, constitutions are tested and old friends are brought back from the dead.

Episode 1: The new year often causes many people to take a look at their finances and resolve to make changes or do better. However, financial resolutions, like fitness ones, seem easier to make than to keep. Eoin McGee presents this show aiming to help viewers look after their finances. Here he meets thirtysomething couple Kerri and Brian, who live in east Cork. Parents to sixyear-old Sean and eight-month-old Kitty, the two teachers enjoy life but struggle to remember where exactly their money goes each month.

Writer-director Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) has crafted a Little Women that draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott, and unfolds as the author’s alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life. In Gerwig’s take, the beloved story of the March sisters – four young women each determined to live life on her own terms -- is both timeless and timely. Portraying Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth March, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, with Timothée Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.

Arts & Entertainment

An evening with Jack Lukeman

Jack is back! Following a great gig here in January 2019 musical legend, Jack Lukeman, returns to the Theatre Royal on Saturday 18th January @ 8pm for an exclusive intimate show featuring the most celebrated songs from his multi-platinum and number 1 selling albums. ‘Lukeman is a compelling, dazzling stage performer. Incorporating the theatrical and romantic sensibilities of the likes of Jacques Brel, Jim Morrison, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits but with his own genuine melodic appeal and a knack for creating a ‘magic realist’ world that is peopled by all manner of unusual, picaresque characters, Lukeman is a rare, unique brand of performer in the modern age’. Edinburgh Spotlight Magazine –Hot Press magazine states “Lukeman’s voice is powerful and fluid. His range is impressive, from the deep baritone resonance of When the Moon Is High to the aching falsetto of the magnificent Rooftop. Tickets €22/€20 on sale now from Box Office or www.theatreroyal.ie

The Farewell

Is there such as thing as a good lie? Writer-director Lulu Wang poses this question in The Awakening, a film based on her own relationship with her Chinese grandmother who was left in the dark by her family after they were informed of her terminal cancer diagnosis. The rationale behind their decision was that if she was made aware of her condition, she’d give up the will to live. In the cinematic version of events, the family hastily conjure up a wedding as the pretext for returning to their home city of Changchun. Chinese born, US raised Billi (Awkwafina) reluctantly accepts the invite to return to her homeland. The visit gives her an opportunity to reconnect with her grandmother and grow closer to her extended family. The Farewell is a humorous and moving story of intergenerational tensions familiar to us all. As Michael Corleone was heard to remark about a different family, ‘just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.’ The Awakening screens in Garter Lane Arts Centre on Tuesday, Jan 14th, at 7.30pm. Booking 051-855038 & garterlane.ie. Confirmation from Frank Ryan 086-3732398.

A fairytale no one wants to be in

‘Resolutions’ is a new one act play that looks into the past, present and future of characters from Waterford City as they go through the tradition of counting down to the New Year. The play was created by the older drama members of Waterford Youth Arts with their director Martina Collender. It is a strong issue based piece and is definitely not aimed at children. As Martina describes the process “The cast wanted to create a piece of work that told real stories at this time of year so they spoke to homeless people and those who work in this area and ‘Resolutions’ is what emerged. But it is not all bleak and sad there is also some humour in the play” “January never seems real, and sometimes Christmas seems to be forced happiness it’s like we’re all characters in a fairytale no one wants to be in”

aid one cast member “We wanted to look at how people really feel and think in January and the New Year and how people can manage to have hope even while they are in dire circumstances. We wanted to say and do something really important with this play.” Make a date for one of three performances at St. Patrick’s Gateway Centre on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th January at 8pm and also on Saturday 25th a matinee performance at 2pm. All money from the door will go to support the work of ‘Helping Hands’ the local voluntary group that feeds homeless people at St. Patrick’s Gateway Centre every night throughout the year. Tickets available on the door – we hope you can make it along. Admission is €7 and €5concession (donations to Helping Hands also accepted). Photo by Lilly Murphy

waterford-today.ie January 8, 2020 2nd Anniversary GERARD FOLEY

Acknowledgement Enda Kelly

In Loving Memory

18th & 12th Anniversary Aidan & BRIDGET KEHOE

11th Anniversary NICHOLAS COADY

Unseen and unheard but always near, So loved, so missed, so very dear

1st Anniversary William Nash In loving memory of Gerard Foley, late of St. Johns Park, whose second anniversary occurs on Monday 14th January. Mass offered in the Sacred Heart Church the Folly on Sunday the 12th January at 12:30pm. Todays the anniversary, Of the day that we lost you, And for a time it felt as though, Our lives ended too, But that loss has thought us many things, And now we face each day, With hope and happy memories, To help us on our way, And though we are full of sadness, That you are no longer here, Your influence still guides us, And we still feel you near, What we shared will never die, It lives within our hearts, Bringing strength and comfort, While we are apart. - Loved always, from your daughter Grace, son Andrew, grandson Harry, son in law Eddie and Monica Brother. Today is full of memories, Of a brother laid to rest, And every single one of them, Is filled with happiness, For you were someone special, Aways such a joy to know, And there was so much pain, When it was time to let you go, That’s why this special message, Is sent to heaven above, For the angels to take care of you, And give you all our love. - Sadly missed and always remembered, your sister Jacinta, brother in law Seamus and niece Sarah.

No longer in our lives to share, But in our hearts you are always there, A silent thought, a quiet prayer, For a special Dad in God’s care. -Sadly missed by his sons, Shane & Kieran, daughters Mary, Kathleen & Philomena, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great grandchildren and extended family

19th Anniversary STELLA KELLY In loving memory of Nicholas Coady whose 11th Anniversary occurs on the 11th of January. Mass offered on Saturday 7th January in Ballybricken.

In loving memory of Enda Kelly late of 118 Ballybeg Park who passed away in December 2019. The Family of the late Enda Kelly would like to thank most sincerely and acknowledge all those who sympathised with them in their recent sad bereavement. We offer our heartfelt thanks to Enda’s extended family, friends, neighbours and sympathisers who attended the Funeral Mass and burial,to those who sent Mass cards, rang and continue to offer their support and sympathies. A special word of thanks to The Intensive Care Unit & Corony Care Unit at UHW. To all those who contributed to Enda’s funeral mass including Fr. Chestnutt, P.P. and Sarah Lavery for her beautiful singing. Also to Heffernan’s pub in Kilcohan for their hospitality after the mass. A sincere thanks to staff of Luke Hennessy Undertakers, for their professionalism and attention to detail in handling the arrangements. As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually, please accept this as an expression of our deepest gratitude. Enda’s Month Mind mass is on Saturday 11th January at 6.30pm in the Sacred Heart Church, The Folly.

19th Anniversary Paul Kennedy

6th Anniversary John reid

In loving memory of John Reid, late of 17 Rockenham, whose 6th anniversary occurs on the 13th of January.

7th Anniversary Joseph Millea

In loving memory of Paul Kennedy (Kenno), late of 43 Bishopsgrove, Ferrybank, Waterford, who died 15th January 2001. Anniversary mass will be held on Saturday 11th January at 7.30pm in Sacred Heart Church, Ferrybank. Fond memories linger every day As we loved you, so we miss you; In our memory you are near. Loved, remembered, longed for always, Bringing many a silent tear. - Always in our hearts, Mam, Dad and Sarah xxx

Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. K.G.

In loving memory of William (Billy) Nash, late of Doyle Street, whose 1st anniversary occurs on the 12th of January. Anniversary mass will be offered on Saturday the 11th, at 6.15pm in the Holy Family Church, Luke Wadding Street. We sat at your bedside, our hearts were crushed and sore, We did our duty to the end, til we could do no more. In tears we watched you sinking, we watched you fade away, And though our hearts were breaking, we knew you couldn’t stay. You left behind some aching hearts that loved you most sincere, We never shall and never will forget you Billy dear. - Missing you always, your nephew Sean and wife Celia. Memories are a keepsake, to treasure all life through, But ours are very special Billy because they are of you. So you will never be forgotten, not for a single day, And your lovely happy character will never fade away. - Always loved and remembered fondly by your grand niece Gillian, partner Jean, great grand nephews Christopher and Sean, great grand niece Mia. So many people loved you, that makes us feel so proud, You were a special grand uncle who stood out in a crowd, You always had a smile to share, a laugh, a joke, a time to care. You left a space in our hearts no one can ever fill, We love you Billy and always will. - Your grand niece Lisa, husband David, Great grand nephew Jack, great grand nieces Lily and Julia.

In Loving memory of Joseph ( Joe) Millea, late of Woodgreen, Hillview, whose anniversary takes place on the 11th of January. Mass will be held in the Scared Heart Church, The Folly on the Sunday 12th of January at 11.15am. Dad There is not a day that goes by When I don’t think about you dad All the times we shared together All the fun we had I love you and I miss you Each and every single day You left a hole no one can fill When angels took you away But I will hold onto the memories And hold them forever in my heart I keep a little piece of you with me So we are truly never far apart - Miss you always, your loving daughter Joanne x Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us everyday. Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed and very dear - Love and miss you grandad, Leon, Thomas and Joanna x Death leaves a heartache No one can heal, love leaves a memory No one can steal. Joseph -Always remembered by your Sisters

19th & 33rd Anniversaries Samuel & Eileen Waring

7th Anniversary KITTY O’ BYRNE In loving memory of our dear friend Kitty O’Byrne late of Connolly Place whose 7th anniversary occurs on the 10th January. And in between, no matter where, Deep in our hearts, You are always there. -Always remembered by your friends Peggy and Megan We think about you often, We talk about you still, You have not been forgotten, And you never will. - From your neighbours Annie, Lolly, Billy and family

In Heaven you rest, No worries or pain, In God’s own time, We will meet again. Simple words but very true, On this your anniversary. - From your loving husband Jimmy Like falling leaves the years roll by, but memories of you will never die. Sunshine passes, shadows fall, But memories of you outlast them all. - Always loved by your son Denis, daughter-in-law Angela and grandsons Peter & Stephen & great grandson Anthony To hear you voice, To see your smile, To sit and talk with you a while, To be together in the same old way, Would be my dearest wish today. - Loved and remembered always by your daughter Margaret, son-in-law Shane, grandchildren Conor, Niamh, Olivia and Luke

5th Anniversary ESTHER FITZPATRICK

In Loving Memory

January is upon us with sad regret, The day, the month we will never forget, We speak your name with love and pride, We smile through tears we cannot hide, Death does not part us or distance divide, For every day you walk by our side. We thank you Billy, For the time we shared, For the love you gave, And how much you cared. Memories are something no one can steal, Death is a heartache no one can heal. Time slips by & life goes on, But from our hearts you are never gone. Time was never long enough, but alas it had to end, We’re so very sad we lost you, A precious Father, Son, Brother and best Friend. Our hearts still ache in sadness, And secret tears still flow, What it means to lose you, No one will ever know. Your smile was made of Sunshine, Your heart was made of gold, Thank you for the special years And the memories that we hold. No matter how we spend our day, No matter what we do, No morning dawns or evening falls, Without a thought of you. We miss you now, Our hearts are sore, As time goes by we miss you more. Your loving smile, your gentle face, No one can fill your vacant place. It does not take a special day, For us to think of you, It is the normal everyday, That is the hardest without you. - Always in our hearts, never far from our thoughts. Billy we miss you dearly, from your loving family.

Mam, A mother is a special gift, One you think will stay, You never dream the day will come, When God calls her away, You were always there when I needed you Mam, No task too great or small, With loving hands and a loving heart, You took great care of us. - Always loved and remembered by your daughter Catherine, son-in-law Tom, grandchildren and great grandchildren Mam, You gave us everything you had, Your time, your love & care, You never asked for anything And you were always there, Your needs were simple Your wants were few, If your family were happy, So were you, A heart of gold, a life so true, Loved and respected by all you knew. - Loved and missed every day by your daughter Rose Nanny, They say there is no reason, They say that time will heal, But neither time nor reason, Will change the way I feel, For no-one knows the heartache, That lies behind our smiles, No-one knows how many times, I have broken down and cried, Gone from home that smiling face, Those cheerful happy ways, The heart that won so many friends, In bygone happy days, I want to tell you something, So there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think of, But so hard to be without. - Always missed and loved by your grand daughter Natalie Have you ever lost a mother, Who meant the world to you, One I loved so dearly and miss her like I do, If you never had that feeling, I hope you never do, For when God takes your mother, He takes a part of you, There’s a picture of my loving mother, Locked in a golden frame, Of all the gifts of life, However great or small, To have you for my mother, Was the greatest gift of all. Next time I see you mother, Will be at heavens door, And when I see you standing there, I won’t cry anymore. I’ll put my arms around you, And kiss your smiling face, Then the pieces of my broken heart, Will fall back into place. - From Mary, Frankie, Thomas and Orla

Today is full of memories, Of a brother laid to rest, And every single one of them, Is filled with happiness, For you were someone special, Always such a joy to know, And there was so much pain, When it was time to let you go, That’s why this special message, Is sent to Heaven above, For the angels to take care of you, And give you all my love.

In loving memory of Mrs. Betty Cooper, late of Morrisson’s Road, whose 1st anniversary occurs on January 10th. Mass offered. Loved with a love beyond all telling, Missed with a grief beyond all tears. - Sadly missed by her sons, daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Although we smile and make no fuss, No one misses you more than us, And when old times we do recall, That’s when we miss you most of all. - Sadly missed and remembered by your sister, brothers and families Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. A.P.
