Anger at Cabinet snub to region THE new Government has come under fire for failing to appoint a senior Cabinet minister from the South East.

Waterford’s Sinn Féin TD David Cullinane said Taoiseach Micheál Martin’s appointments marked “a bad day for regional development and a bad day for the South East”.

The Government has also been criticised for having too few women ministers and by Waterford Council of Trade Unions for “a plan to continue putting private interests above the public good”.

WCTU president Joe Kelly said the Programme for Government “commits Ireland to continue acting as an international tax haven ... the country will continue to be a safe haven for those who want to contribute nothing, and a daily drudge for those working and paying to improve their lives and our society.”

The history-making coalition of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Green Party was elected by 37 Fianna Fáil TDs, 35 Fine Gael deputies and 12 Green TDs supported by nine Independents, including Waterford hospital campaigner Matt Shanahan.

Mr Cullinane said he was “taken aback” to see Mr Shanahan vote for “a Government that has ignored the South East ... this sends out an awful signal that ignoring the region will be tolerated.”

But Mr Shanahan said he had voted for Mr Martin because the country needed a government to pass legislation.

“The most important thing to me is that we get a government first and foremost,” he told WLR. “The issues of Waterford will have to be dealt with after that but, first of all, we needed a new administration in place and that’s what I was voting for.”

FINE Gael’s Damien Geoghegan is the new Mayor of Waterford city and county.

He was elected by 17 votes to 15 with the backing of Fianna Fáil and and Independents Joe Kelly, Joe Conway and Seamus O’Donnell.

Fianna Fáil councillor, Eddie Mulligan, was elected Deputy Mayor.

Cllr Geoghegan, from Dungarvan, was nominated

by FG’s Lola O’Sullivan and seconded by James Tobin (FF).

He beat off a challenge from another Dungarvan councillor, Sinn Féin’s Conor McGuinness. Cllr McGuiness was supported by Labour, the Green Party and several Independents, as well as his own party.

Cllr Mulligan defeated Sinn Fein’s Jim Griffin for the deputy role.

After the election, Cllr Geoghegan listed his priorities as delivery of 24/7 cardiac care to University Hospital Waterford, completion of the North

Quays project and bringing a University to Waterford.

House cost steady despite Covid fears

THE price of the average threebed semi in Waterford city and county is unchanged over the past year, despite fears of a downturn during the Covid-19 crisis.

The average price has remained at €215,000 in the city and €178,000 in the county, according to a survey by the Real Estate Alliance.

“There is no evidence of a reduction in prices here and the market has been active since we came back two weeks ago,” said Des O’Shea of REA O’Shea O’Toole, Waterford City.

He is advising vendors to expect a delayed selling period because of uncertainty in the market. The average time to sell has increased by one week in the city to 13 weeks, and was unchanged at 12 weeks in the county.

“Since our office reopened, we have experienced an exceptionally high level of requests for viewings in addition to receiving offers on a number of residential properties,” said Eamonn Spratt of REA Spratt, Dungarvan.

Cautious customers tell pubs: We’ll be back AS the pubs of Waterford reopened their doors this week, they were boosted by a poll which found that three out of four of their regulars plan to pay them a visit within a month.

Initial business was reported to be steady, with customers cautiously trying out the new rules which require tables to be booked and food ordered and limit the time which can be spent in a pub.

However, the research showed that 74% of people who visited pubs once a month or more before the Covid-19 closures, plan on visiting a pub within the next month, and three out of every five members of the general public (59%) plan on returning to pubs within the same period.

The research was commissioned by the Licensed Vintners Association (LVA), the Vintners Federation of Ireland (VFI) as well as alcohol suppliers Heineken, Diageo, Irish Distillers and C&C Group.

Clear hygiene and safety measures will have the strongest impact on encouraging the public to return to pubs.

According to the research, 61% of the public said knowing that all glasses and cutlery will be deep cleaned will impact on their plans to return.

This was followed by hand sanitiser being available at the

door and throughout the venue (57%), the use of outdoor spaces and seating (55%), employing dedicated cleaning staff to regularly sanitise tables and surfaces (53%), clear signs and guidelines on rules to maintain safety (48%) and bar staff adopting a strict policy on those who break safety rules (48%).

TRAMORE: As Waterford gets back to business, the Tramore Development Trust is celebrsating its 20th anniversary and to mark that occasion it is re-opening a newly renovated Tramore Coastguard Cultural Centre which features a café, visitor centre and gallery.

The Trust is launching a brand new website www.coastguardcreatives.ie which is a collective of local art and craft community members whose work is now available for sale on the website.

Tramore Development Trust is a community-led voluntary group.

Its chairperson Anne Harpur said: “We are delighted to celebrate the milestone of 20 years for Tramore Development Trust.

“There has been a lot achieved by our voluntary group at this time and we have lots of large scale future ambitions for the town”

Work on cath labs hit by new delays

WATERFORD’S hopes for better cardiac care have received another setback.

It will be spring of next year before work will begin on a new cath lab at University Hospital Waterford, (UHW) a TD has revealed.

Matt Shanahan, the Independent who was elected to fight for the hospital, took issue with outgoing Health Minister Simon Harris in a Dáil debate last week.

A statement issued on behalf of Mr Shanahan said: “Despite Fine Gael circulating a press release three weeks ago promising the construction of the long promised cath lab at University Hospital Waterford would begin in October 2020, information received by Deputy Shanahan

clearly shows the project build will now not commence until Spring 2021 at the earliest.

“In addition, Deputy Shanahan also provided information to show the modifications to the existing cath lab in University Hospital Waterford have been delayed many weeks because of the delay to provide Nphet approved travel arrangements for commissioning cath lab engineers.”

The statement said: “The removal of the mobile diagnostic cath lab unit in recent weeks means that a significant number of patient procedures are being deferred every week at the UHW centre and this is adding to the growing cardiac care list in the South East.”.

At long, long last, the war is over

T

he first shots of the Civil War were fired on February 18, 1922, when an IRA unit commanded

by Ernie O’Malley seized a police station in Clonmel.

The last shots were fired in April this year when Séamus Ó Néill, president of Fianna Fáil’s Comhairle Dáilcheantair for Waterford, issued a statement criticising Micheál Martin for proposing a government coalition with Fine Gael.

Mr O’Neill urged Mr Martin to step down as Fianna Fáil’s leader, recalling: “In 1927 Eamon de Valera called on all Republicans to unite in opposition to WT Cosgrave’s Government, which they did.

I am now calling on all true Republicans in our constituency to unite and demand the right to vote against this proposal.”

Mr O’Neill’s gunfire was metaphorical, of course, but he shot himself in the foot nonetheless.

There may have been sound reasons for Fianna Fáil to reject a deal with Fine Gael, but Eamon de Valera’s dispute with

WT Cosgrave was not one of them.

I doubt if many people even knew what Mr O’Neill was talking about and, for those who did, it must have seemed like a good reason for supporting the pact and burying the bitter legacy of the Civil War for once and for all.

There is no-one alive today who remembers the Civil War. When, in the late 1970s, I joined the staff of the dear departed Irish Press, there were a few elderly journalists who remembered it as a troubled time from their childhood. They recalled talk of great hatreds, when families were divided and

old comrades fought each other to the death.

Was the cause worth dying for? They did not think so and they did not contend that the Civil War, or the rows that shaped the Dáil of De Valera’s day, had any relevance to the

politics of the the 1970s, which centred on planning rows, fiscal rectitude, efforts to legalise contraception and attempts to bring peace to the North.

Today the dispute between Cosgrave and De Valera has as much relevance to our politics

as the one between Elizabeth I and Hugh O’Neill. So it was good to hear Mr Martin declare his intention to hang pictures of Dev and Michael Collins side by side in the taoiseach’s office.

Maybe they’ll both be turning in their graves - but who cares?

It’s history. And what we should do about history is to learn from it, not live by it.

The lesson from that sad chapter of our history should be never to come to blows over matters that can be settled by debate. The issues behind the Civil War divisions - the name of the State, the oath of allegiance, the British right to use some Irish ports - became irrelevant in a very short time.

All except partition, about which we continued a futile fight for 70 years before accepting that it, too, could not be resolved by bloodshed.

I believe the new coalition agreement is one of the most significant developments in recent Irish history and will eventually lead to the amalgamation of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, the parties whose phony war has shaped our politics for most of a century.

It will lead to new ways of thinking and parties that will be supported for what they do, not what their founders did.

But that is a matter of another day. For now I am just happy to record that, at long, long last, the war over.

Thousands answer call but only 8 appointed

ONLY eight healthcare workers have been hired through the ‘Be On Call for Ireland’ campaign for a region that includes Waterford.

More than 70,000 volunteers throughout the country applied to help fight Covid-19 but only 185 health and social care workers have been recruited.

Only eight workers have been recruited for Area 5, which incorporates Waterford, South Tipperary, Carlow, Kilkenny, and Wexford.

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Health, Louise O’Reilly, said she is baffled at the low level of recruitment when “nursing homes and residential care facilities are crying out for help”.

She said: “It beggars belief that with tens of thousands of health staff applying to work through ‘Be On Call for Ireland’, and in the face of an international healthcare crisis, recruitment through the initiative has been so low.”

Cllr Daniels defeated Fianna Fáil’s Jason Murphy by 10 votes to eight.

Cllr Daniels had the support of Sinn Féin, the Greens, Labour, Mary Roche and fellow independent, Donal Barry.

In his inaugural address, the new mayor said it was a critical time for Waterford.

THE Waterford Walls festival will go ahead this month in a new extended format to allow for Covid-19 rules.

The International Street Art Festival will start on Monday, July 13 and run to Wednesday, August 26.

Cork first step to a Croker Christmas gift WATERFORD wil play Cork in the semi-final of this year’s Munster Senior Hurling Championship.

The old rivals will meet on the weekend of October 31 with their sights on an allIreland final in the week before Christmas.

The draw was made last week when it was announced that, for the first time in 96 years, the All-Ireland hurling final will be played in December.

The disruption caused by Covid-19 has limited the tournament. There will be no round-robin this year but, unlike the football tournament, the All-Ireland championship will operate a back-door system, ensuring that every county gets at least two games.

The All-Ireland final will be on Sunday, December 13, the same weekend on which Dublin beat Galway in the 1924 final.

Simply the best IRELAND and Manchester United legend John O’Shea has been voted Waterford’s Greatest Sporting Hero in a radio poll.

O’Shea (pictured) topped a poll of more than 20,000 WLR listeners. The Ferrybank man won five Premier Leagues, two FA Cups, the Champions League and made 118 appearances for his country.

The Munster and Leinster championships will be played on a knock-out basis but with All-Ireland qualifier rounds .

The Munster and Leinster finals will take place on the weekend of November 14.

The 2020 Allianz Hurling League Division 1 title will be between Limerick and Clare, as winners of Divisions 1A and 1B respectively. Should they meet in the championship, the outcome of that match will decide the league and if they don’t, the title will be shared.

Divisions 2A, 2B and 3B will complete their finals on the weekend of October 17.

The under-20 championship will be played as a knock-out tournament.

This year’s McDonagh Cup will again be played as a roundrobin and the final is scheduled to be played as the curtain raiser to the All-Ireland final,

Pic: Justin Ivory While counting butterflies and bumblebees on recent trips to Kilruddery Gardens in Bray and Mount Usher Gardens in Ashford I was brought to a halt by the sound of humming and then the sight of an unexpected creatures flitting from flower to flower – Hummingbirds!

Similar reports have been flooding in from all over the country.

You’ve got to be kidding!

Well yes and no is the answer.

These particular aeronautical masters are not birds at all but one of the coolest, most amazing insects you are likely to encounter in Ireland. They are in fact Hummingbird Hawk-moths (Macroglossum stellatarum).

This day flying moth resembles a hummingbird as it hovers with an audible hum in front of flowers feeding on the nectar with its long tongue or more correctly proboscis.

It is particularly fond of Red Valerian as well as Fuschia, Jasmine and Campion and many other species.

Government of its time, for the times

S

o we finally have a government.

The Programme for Government [PFG] negotiated between Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and the Green Party was ratified by the membership of those parties last week, allowing the election of Michael Martin as Taoiseach and the appointment of a cabinet at the weekend.

Negotiations between all involved in the administration’s make up had been protracted for various reasons – the COVID19 pandemic took precedence over everything else [and rightly so] and the stalemate thrown up by the results of the February poll [it seems a lifetime in the past now!] meant there were a myriad array of permutations and combinations to be considered before we finally arrived at the formula above.

It wasn’t a forgone conclusion that the PFG would be ratified by all three parties. There was a degree of resistance and opposition to the proposed arrangement in each of them, and this was to be expected. It was

also healthy – we live in a democracy and people are entitled to voice their concerns about change. Nevertheless the deal pulled through comfortably and the government has become reality.

Personally I’m with the makeup of the new government. I think a multi-party coalition is a progressive step, and one that is common throughout the EU. Having a three-party coalition where two of the parties are centre-ground is reassuring for me personally, as I’m a fan of neither hard-left politics nor right-wing populism.

A green element to the government is the icing on the cake for me. Anyone who is concerned about climate change must see that the only way to effect meaningful change in our behaviour and in our business practices is to implement green policies. We can’t do everything at once, and we can’t do what we can’t afford, but there is scope to make significant changes and we need to embrace this opportunity, for the

sake of our children and their children.

So Michael Martin has finally become Taoiseach in a historic ‘rotation’ agreement. This isn’t a new idea – Dick Spring proposed it in the 1990’s when he led the Labour Party to 33 seats – but it is the first time it has been put into practice.

This is a government of its time. Politics in Ireland has moved on from the pursuit of single-party overall-majority rule. Our electorate has a young element to it who want green policies, jobs and the chance to get on the property ladder.

To deliver these, and to improve our health service and tackle the homelessness crisis, the new administration needs to hit the ground running and collaborate efficiently so that they perform to the sum of their parts. We need synergy from them, not infighting. They have our futures in their hands. Let them get on with the job of delivering.
