Rescue plan for our tourist trade THE council is preparing a new marketing plan to salvage Waterford’s tourist industry when the Covid-19 crisis has passed. Since international travel will be restricted for some time, the campaign will focus on the domestic market, both national and regional. The plan is being prepared by the Tourism Team and Visit Waterford. “It will be finalised in the next few weeks and will be activated once restrictions are lifted,” council Chief Executive, Michael Walsh, told councillors in a briefing document. The council has also applied for a tourism investment programme to develop a worldclass visitor experience in the Viking Triangle, on the sorting office site. It is currently being worked on for submission to Fáilte Ireland. The moves come as a report warns that a decline in tourism could have a very serious impact across Waterford city and county where 11% of all

jobs are directly dependent on tourism and the hospitality sector. An ambitious and coordinated tourism plan from public and private stakeholders should be considered to prevent the industry from faltering, according to the report by consulting and professional services firm, EY Ireland. It calls for more emphasis on domestic tourism. “While we must continue the longstanding Irish tradition of welcoming overseas visitors with our famous hospitality, many of us are turning our thoughts to how we can enjoy our national heritage and natural beauty more,” said Yannick Cabrol, Economic Strategy Manager at EY Ireland. “Growing domestic and sustainable tourism will be essential elements of the recovery.” There is anger among local publicans, meanwhile, that the Turn to Page 4

Government’s schedule for restarting the economy will allow cafés and restaurants to re-open before pubs. The two representative bodies for pubs in Ireland, the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI) and the Licensed Vintners’ Association (LVA), have put a plan to the Government which would allow pubs to re-open earlier if they enforce strict rules on social distancing. They say the sector employs 50,000 people. LVA Chief Executive Donall O’Keeffe said: “Many pubs possess a restaurant certificate so we expect those outlets will open at the same time as restaurants. More food is consumed in pubs than in full service restaurants or cafes, so why should pubs be denied this invaluable source of revenue? Pubs with restaurant licences already have dedicated kitchens, can provide table service and are just as capable of adapting to the public health guidelines as any restaurant or cafe .”
FF activist calls for party leader to step down A FIANNA Fáil activist has claimed that some members in Waterford have “grave concerns” about the party’s plans to go into Government with Fine Gael. Séamus Ó Néil, president of FF’s Waterford Comhairle Dáilcheantair, has called on party leader Micheál Martin to “consider stepping down”. As FF and FG attempt to form a coalition with Greens and Independents, Mr Ó Néill, a former constituency organiser, issued a statement saying he had been contacted by Fianna Fáil councillors, members and supporters “all expressing grave concerns about the Joint Framework Document, drawn up by Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil and their intention to enter into a coalition arrangement.” He criticised the claim by senior party members that the Covid-19 Crisis made it impossible to hold an Árd Fheis to authorise the planned coalition. “This is clearly ignoring the rules that were implemented following our disastrous election in 2011,” he said. “With our electronic society and An Post, a poll can be easily arranged for us members to have our say on what will be the most important decision ever
taken by our party.” He said it was insulting that Mr Martin would “actually accept the position as a parttime Taoiseach”, adding: “In 1927 Eamon de Valera called on all republicans to unite in opposition to WT Cosgrave’s Government, which they did. “I am now calling on all true republicans in our constituency to unite and demand the right to vote against this proposal.” He hit out at Mr Martin’s “aggressive tone towards the Sinn Féin party” and said Mr Martin should take “a hard look at his record, since becoming leader, he should consider stepping down and making way for a new leader, who knows our history and our core values and who can re-build our party.” Waterford’s Sinn Féin TD, David Cullinane, meanwhile, has commented on proposals for bringing the Greens into Government. He said any Climate Action Bill must be underpinned by real investment and concrete solutions with costed measures to achieve the reductions. “Sinn Féin seeks to shift the focus away from abstract targets into the arena of realistic and deliverable measures,” he said.
Anger as Blues lay off players by email WATERFORD FC have become the laest League of Ireland club to lay off their players because of the Covid-19 crisis. It is 10 weeks since the Blues last played and Waterford FC said the “temporary lay off” was necessary to “safeguard the future of the club”. The decision was seen as envitable but there was anger that the team were not told directly, but got the bad news by email. RTE quoted manager Alan Reynolds as saying the emails were “a disgrace” and showed no respect for the employees. The email was signed by Jack Power, general manager and son of the club chairman, Lee Power. It expressed sadness and said: “As agreed previously we have continued to make payments to all staff over these few months, however, after time to deliber-
ate, the board has come to the conclusion for the survival of the club we have no other option. “Therefore it is with great regret that we have made the decision to temporarily lay off all employees with immediate effect.” Reynolds told RTE Sport: “I was totally unaware of this until I got a message from the players. Imagine being laid off like that after the service I have given to my home-town club? “The players, who are suffering like the rest of us, are disgusted by the way this was carried out. I understand cuts are necessary, but is this the way to do it?” RTE speculated that Reynolds was now considering whether he would return with the Blues when league action resumes.

The (very) long and winding road
W
hen I was a child of five, maybe six, my father hired a caravan and the family went touring in Wicklow. It was a scary experience. My da drove a hefty car that was well capable of pulling the load. But the caravan was a rickety affair with a mind of its own. It wobbled behind us and seemed likely to break loose at any moment, turning the Vale of Avoca’s winding roads into a hair-raising slalom course. That drive, from Belfast, was the longest I ever took with my father. But all car journeys were long back then, because of the decrepit state of the roads and the fact that they never went from A to Z without passing through 24 other places . Things hadn’t improved much by the late 1960s when I first got a car of my own. A journey from Belfast to Dublin was pretty much a day trip. Among the obstacles to be
Michael Wolsey
faced was The Border, where I had to stop, show insurance documents and receive a little triangular device called a triptyque, which I was required to stick on the inside of the windscreen. By this stage I had already been in the towns of Lisburn, Banbridge and Newry. Before reaching Dublin, I would go through Dundalk, Drogheda, Balbriggan, Swords and several smaller places. The concept of a bypass seemed unknown in 1960s Ireland, so when I say ‘go through’ I mean just that: down past rows of houses, along the main street
and out again, skirting market stalls, local monuments, large churches and small schools. I’m not sure how many hours were actually spent on the road but it was a trip which required stops. Since drink-driving was almost as foreign a concept as the bypass, these stops were often spent in pubs, which did nothing to speed the voyage. Cautious folk would bring tea
and sandwiches “for the journey”. Cars were unreliable - my early cars, in particular - and breakdowns frequent, turning what is now a two-hour drive into an unpredictable adventure. I recall developing a puncture somewhere in Co Louth. The wheel bolts had seized and I couldn’t loosen them. A sturdy
little man appeared, like magic it seemed, and offered to help. He put the wheel brace in place and jumped on it. This tactic loosened the bolt but it also broke the brace and, since the brace operated the jack, changing the wheel now seemed impossible. My knight of the road was undaunted. He put both hands under the chassis, lifted one side of the car and held it there while I made the necessary change. He then tightened the bolts by hand as firmly as I could have managed with the brace. Motorways put a stop to such adventures. And a good thing too. It was fun but nobody in their right mind wants to spend half a day travelling between Dublin and Belfast. Unfortunately, in a variant of Parkinson’s Law, the volume of traffic has expanded to fill the roads available, so modern driving is often unpleasant and, at the wrong time of day, journeys can take almost as long as they did 50 years ago. When I look at near empty roads on recent news bulletins, I think “if only ...”
Principles for long term investment
The Central Bank report on retail interest rates for February 2020 showed Irish mortgage holders are paying 1.56% more than their euro area counterparts. History shows the longer money is invested, the greater the chances of a positive outcome. Staying fully invested through a market cycle has, in the past, ensured investors reap greater rewards over the longterm as rebounds after large losses are often significant. If you are concerned about recent market falls, it is a good idea to discuss your current investment strategy, rather than making a sudden decision. Markets will always experience highs and lows in response to social, political and economic events. Timing the markets involves trying to anticipate when these highs and lows will occur, with investors hoping to buy when prices have reached the bottom and sell when they have peaked. Unfortunately, it’s very hard to predict when to buy back in and getting it wrong means you could end up locking in losses and missing out on future gains.
Expert VIEW John Smiles Qualified Financial Advisor Periods of extreme market volatility heighten feelings of concern in relation to investments, but staying the course and following the five key investment principles below may help you increase your chances of a positive outcome. Volatility is part of 1. investing - markets rise and fall regularly, it is part of the natural cycle of investing. But historically, each significant market downturn has been followed by an eventual upswing. 2. Keeping money in cash is not the long-term answer while markets have recovered somewhat from their lows, they are still in a period of significant volatility and further market falls are still possible. However, monetary and fiscal measures have emerged and there are a range of other potential responses available.
Well, no, they can’t be like that all the time. But some of the lessons we are learning from this crisis may improve, not just driving, but life in general. It’s crazy that half the country spends hours commuting to work in central locations and I feel sure that, when this is over, more people will chose to work from home, at least for some days each week. That would take some of the burden off public transport. The few people I know still using it to get to work, tell me how good it is to be on trains and trams that are not packed, where people can sit with a degree of comfort. We can achieve that, or something like it, by investing in public transport; more trains with more carriages and more frequent buses. That would take some of the burden off the roads. We don’t need to keep building new roads but we will always need the ones we have and it would be nice if they became a bit more user-friendly. I don’t want driving to be an adventure but it could be a lot more pleasant.
3. Over the long-term, holding money in riskier assets is rewarded - short-term market movements are often the result of changes in valuation and sentiment – how investors feel about the stock market, in contrast to long-term market movements, which are the result of changes to companies’ fundamental worth. Diversify – the basic 4. tenet of investing is diversification which means spreading risk by mixing a range of asset classes within your portfolio. A well-diversified portfolio helps smooth the return over the long run. While there is no such thing as a 100% risk-free investment, diversification can mitigate the inherent risk of investing, helping you to reach your long-term financial goals. 5. The greatest asset an investor can have is patience and regular reviews will ensure you are on track to achieve your long-term, strategic financial goals. Tel: 051 318000. Helping hand for business Allotments to
spring up on civic grassland
WATERFORD Institute of Technology (WIT) is offering a number of free courses to help businesses through the Covid-19 emergency. It’s a short-term measure open to anyone working in enterprises across the South East or seeking work in the region. The courses include finance, digital marketing and payroll management. Lecturers include Helen Murphy, Head of the School of Education and Lifelong
Learning , pictured with Neil Quinlan, Head of the Department of Lifelong Learning. The deadline for applications is Thursday, 14 May, with courses set to start the following week. For more information and to book a place see www.wit.ie/ parttime. A group of lecturers from WIT’s Department of Sport and Exercise Science, meanwhile, has established the Football Research
Group for the purpose of a coordinated approach to researching football in Ireland and involving researchers from different fields. The aim of the group is to research approaches for the purpose of influencing football policy nationally and internationally. The membership and focus of the group have expanded to include researchers with links to the Italian FA, and a range of English, Italian and German professional clubs.
THE city is to get a new community allotment. The project, at St Carthage’s Avenue just off Barrack Street, is an initiative by local residents in conjunction with Waterford council. It will use a section of public grassland to provide many mini gardens, each cultivated by a member of the public. The site is secluded and firmly secured with fencing. It is hoped it will be a communal area for people to meet and possibly try out their green fingers . Fianna Fáil Councillor Eamon Quinlan, who is involved with the project, said: “It’s so heartening to see locals step up and want to take ownership of an area that has been subjected to neglect and illegal dumping. It has been given to the community to provide a series of beautiful gardens where people can grow fruit, vegetables and flowers.” It is hoped to have an official opening once the Covid-19 crisis has passed. In the meantime, members
of the public who wish to be a part of this initiative and adopt a parcel of land should check out the Facebook page at www. facebook.com/top.of.the.city. garden or email top.of.the.city. garden@gmail.com for more information. In a separate development, Úna Dunphy of Waterford People Before Profit, has called on the council to open an access point to Waterford’s Eco Park from the Kilbarry/Ballybeg side. Ms Dunphy said that a number of residents from the estates in the Kilbarry area have contacted People Before Profit suggesting that this would allow them to use the park, and would be particularly useful because of- the restrictions imposed by the Covid19 lockdown. “It would allow residents to take exercise within government guidelines, in a safe environment, practising social distancing, in a setting that allows people to have access to fresh air and nature,” she said.
CONSUMERS in Waterford have reduced their spending hugely since the onset of the Covid-19 crisis. It is down 19%, according to a survey conducted for the AIB. The one exception is food. The bank’s data shows that Waterford consumers are spending 34% more on groceries, with those between the age of 45 and 54 recording the biggest increase at 40%. The pattern for Waterford is broadly in line with the national trend, based on more than a million transactions between March 8 and April 11. These trends are reflected in a separate survey of the business community conducted for Chambers Ireland. It showed that 34% of businesses have shut completely and 51% have scaled back considerably with many working from home. Gerald Hurley, CEO of
Waterford Chamber, said the business community needs direct support from Government if it is to reopen. “The objective of many of the supports to date, such as the Wage Subsidy Scheme, has been to ensure that employees are retained on payroll for when the economy reopens,” he said. “What the business community needs to see now is a similar approach to ensuring that overheads, other than wages, receive some form of subsidy or grant. Without this aid, the chance of businesses successfully reopening and maintaining employment is significantly reduced.” Meanwhile, staff from Debenham’s Waterford store have again protested against the way they have been laid off. More than 500 people in Waterford, Cork and Dublin joined the online rally.
Siobhan O’Donoghue, director of the campaigning group Uplift, said: “It was an amazing show of solidarity for the people who were fired by Debenhams, who are now being denied their redundancy payment.” Some workers staged a physical protest at the Waterford store, while adhering to rules on social distancing. DIGITAL: Business Minister Heather Humphreys has announced that applications are now open for the new Enterprise Ireland €2 million Covid-19 Online Retail Scheme to support retail companies to enhance their digital capability. The fund, will be open to indigenous retailers with a physical store and employing 10 or more people, to develop a competitive online response to the Covid-19 crisis. Blaa to geta slice of Aldi action Waterford’s iconic blaa will be available on supermarket shelves nationwide for the first time from this week. Home of the Waterford blaa since 1921, local bakery Walsh’s Bakehouse will see their famous blaas stocked in all 142 Aldi stores for a limited two-week period from this Thursday. As with many businesses, the Covid-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on the operation of Walsh’s
Bakehouse. With a significant loss of nearly all its food service and export orders, along with a restructuring and temporary layoff of staff, this helping hand from the Aldi team will play a huge part in ensuring Walsh’s Bakehouse remains operational during this unprecedented time. Walsh’s Bakehouse The Waterford Blaa is a soft, floury white bread roll that has a long connection to the city and county, with between
Fears railway line will remain closed forever Waterford Green Party TD Marc Ó Cathasaigh has sought assurances from Irish Rail that the Waterford to Limerick Junction service, which has been suspended since the outbreak of Covid-19, will be brought back into operation “as soon as possible”. Deputy Ó Cathasaigh said sources within Irish Rail confirmed to him that the line was temporarily closed as a “staff rationalisation measure” during the health crisis. The Waterford TD said he fears this suspension may become a permanent closure unless closely monitored. Deputy Ó Cathasaigh: “While I accept that there may be an argument to temporarily suspend this service in the context of the Covid epidemic. I would be concerned that it could become something more permanent if we take our eye off the ball. We have seen in the past that services, once lost, are difficult to get back, and I will be taking steps
to ensure that’s not what happens here.” Deputy Ó Cathasaigh (pictured below) believes that the Waterford-Limerick service “could and should be put to better use in providing ready access” to the city for commuters and tourism. He added: “I have highlighted on a number of occasions the potential this line has to provide a commuter service, both for workers in Waterford City and for students attending WIT, to the large population centres in South Tipperary and North County Waterford. A simple timetabling change could greatly increase passenger numbers and would help alleviate congestion in and around our city. “In the longer term, I would like to see the Rosslare extension to the line reopened, opening up access to Rosslare Europort for passengers and freight and providing a commuter option to people living in South County Wexford as well.”
School’s out online say some teachers
Teachers in Waterford are worried about their ability to educate their students online due to the ongoing coronavirus restrictions. More than a third of educators complain of slow broadband in the county and issues surrounding the ability of their students to access online classes. The worrying findings were revealed this week as part of a survey compiled by Studyclix,
an online resource for both secondary school teachers and students. Almost 40% of Waterford teachers are concerned about their ability to deliver the required education to their students and cite broadband and connectivity as the main issues. The survey found 33% of teachers in Waterford are experiencing slow or bad broadband connectivity in their own homes.
10,000 and 12,000 blaas consumed every day in the county alone. N o w Walsh’s Bakehouse will deliver its 6 Pack of Waterford Blaas daily to Aldi stores nationwide, retailed at a special
promotional price of €1.99. Winner of Good Food Ireland’s ‘Best Small Producer Aw a r d ’ , Wa l s h ’s Bakehouse, run by brothers, Dermot and Michael Walsh, continue their family
legacy of three generation bakers producing the famous PGI status (Protected Geographical Indication) bread rolls which features on menus from Dublin to Düsseldorf to Dubai, all while offering freshly baked blaa’s locally in Waterford City and county. Walsh’s Bakehouse cofounder Dermot Walsh said: “The foodservice and export part of the business has essentially collapsed during this
time, however a call from Aldi team looking to help support local businesses, introduce new products widely and at a fair price is a lifeline for our bakery and will help ensure our ovens remain on and the bakery open into its 100th year. “We know Aldi customers value Irish products and we’re looking forward to seeing all the great dishes our new Aldi customers will create.”

We’re going in the right direction
T
he roadmap for reopening the country announced by the Government on is to be welcomed. It seems sensible and measured. Doing things in phases will allow us to gradually get back up and running while minimising the risk of a surge of COVID-19 cases overwhelming our health system; the dreaded ‘second wave’. From a mental health point of view, the roadmap is important because it gives people the element of ‘perceived control’ - it allows them to see light at the end of the tunnel even if that light is still some way off. Having a date to work towards is a giant step forward from simply not knowing. Whilst I am happy to make the points above, I would not be entirely happy to say that our Government deserve huge praise for their handling of the pandemic. The ordinary citizens deserve the praise, whether they have continued to work or stayed at home, not the politicians.
People deserve praise for complying with what they have been asked to do. We have saved many lives. As a country though we have not done as well as we think, if you look at per-capita deaths due to COVID-19. Considering the country has been locked down in a draconian way for six weeks, too many people have died. When all this is over we will all just want to get back to normal, which goes without saying. But there will be some takeaways from our time living in lockdown that we may wish to keep, going forward. The future will be a mixture of the past and a bit of the present. Lockdown has taught me many things, and I have been humble enough to learn them. I can work from home a lot more than I would have thought before COVID-19. My children can home-school for an extended period of time without their education being negatively impacted. I can shop online more, use my car less, and get my exercise by walking briskly rather
daily two kilometre (up to five from this week!) walk, but the paths are crowded with runners and the roads with cyclists. Many don’t observe social distancing. Perhaps they think that they are immune from complying while they exercise.
than sweating in a gym. The list goes on. I can survive without cash. I can survive without pubs. I don’t need to shake hands with people as a way of greeting them. I can keep in touch with friends electronically and still have meaningful interactions with them. More than anything else the lockdown has allowed me to focus on my immediate family as the most important thing in my life. I think we all took that for granted a bit before COVID-19, whether we are prepared to admit it or not.
********
I
t seems to me there has been a surge in the numbers running and cycling during lockdown. Either that or the circumstances we are living in has contrived to make it look that, even if it’s not the case. Everyone is staying at home. People are allowed out to get their exercise. The weather has been good. People who used to go farther afield from the neighbourhood for their run or cycle are now staying local, joining those who always did. It all adds up to a hazard though for me. I just want my
Still, it could be worse. Whilst I might feel like I’m walking through the London Marathon course or a Tour de France stage route, breathing in unwelcome droplets potentially contaminated with COVID-19, at least I’m not walking through a pseudo Wimbledon or Isle of Man TT. No, there has been no flying tennis balls or discernible increase in motorbikes. Have you been able to visit your local during lockdown? Not your local pub, mind you, but your local League of Ireland club (I guess walking by either brings a similar feeling of longing to get back inside). If you’ve been walking more than the allotted distance to pass by your favourite ground then I understand (and won’t tell the gardai!). Living in Drumcondra, roughly half-way between Home
Farm’s Whitehall Stadium (a former League of Ireland ground) and Tolka Park (a current one), my two kilometre walk has allowed me take in either, depending on which direction I turn when I come out the door. Now that we can go five kilometres I’ll be able to do a route that can take in both. Perhaps if I set off in the direction of Phibsborough I could even get to Dalymount Park - or at least close enough to it to see the floodlights – before I’d have to turn back. By the time July comes around and we can go 20kms I might just be able to get to the Carlisle Grounds in Bray - but certainly not Waterford FC or Wexford Youth! With no football on the horizon until maybe August or September, walking by the stadiums is as close to any action as we are likely to get. Clubs should open the stadiums for an hour or two each day so that fans can come in and savour the atmosphere, or at least savour the imagined atmosphere! - Brian Quigley

Alpines, Avocets... Awesome!
Avocet Pic: Wikicommons The annual avian spring migration continues unabated with favourable easterly winds bringing some fantastic birds to the East coast from Dublin to Wexford. In Wicklow, rising star of the Irish birding scene and Greystones native Cian Cardiff found an Alpine Swift (Apus melba) at Five Mile Point. This fantastic, rare but regular spring vagrant is a larger cousin of our Common Swift. It has a slower more stiff-winged flight and sports a white belly and throat. The bird was last seen (by myself) heading south. Interestingly the next day there was a report of one from Wexford, possibly the same bird. A Cattle Egret (Bubulcous ibis) was seen again at ECNR (East Coast Nature Reserve), possibly the same bird that was at Killoughter two weeks ago, with another 12 spotted at Tacumshin, Co. Wexford. With more and more sightings of this lovely bird in Ireland in recent years it is only a matter of time before they colonise here, if they haven’t already done so.
Alpine Swift. Pic: Rudraksha Chodankar at Wikicommons Meanwhile Dublin and Wexford have been playing host to Avocets (Recurvirostra avosetta) – these beautiful and elegant waders with their unmistakable crisp black and white plumage and outrageously upturned bill are well known as the symbol of the RSPB across the water. Avocets are scarce in Ireland but with 5 having been sighted at Tacumshin in Wexford since the 20th April just as they are coming into breeding season wouldn’t it be wonderful if they were to breed here this year. Two pairs of Avocets nested here back in 1938, so it is perfectly possible. Along with the rarities and scarcities, our regular migrants are still arriving in, with Sedge and Reed Warblers, Cuckoos and Little Terns all arriving back in Wicklow last week. There is never a dull moment in the natural world!

If you never quite got around to reading one of Terry Pratchett’s works, of which there are over 70, what better time to begin than now? Of course, you can start anywhere but here we recommend one from the global bestselling Discworld series. In Small Gods, Pratchett balances his religious satire with epic storytelling. The story takes place in the city of Omnia where their chief god, Om, has been reduced to the form of a turtle and despite an organised religion centred around his worship, no one really believes in him anymore.
The furore on Joe Duffy last week over the sex scenes will make sure that Normal People is a bonafide hit for RTÉ. If you haven’t seen it or read the book, this is the highly-anticipated 12-part adaptation of Sally Rooney’s acclaimed novel. Starring Kildare newcomer 24-year-old Paul Mescal in his first television role as Connell, and British actress Daisy Edgar Jones (War of the Worlds, Cold Feet) in the role of Marianne. Directed by Lenny Abrahamson, the reviews have been mostly gushing, with many saying it should be shown in schools as an education in consent.
The crew of a west-Ireland fishing trawler struggle for their lives against a deadly parasite in their water supply while hopelessly marooned at sea. The movie centres on marine biology student Siobhan (Hermione Corfield) who reluctantly joins a trawler crew for a research excursion. They’re not happy about it either as Siobhan has got red hair and that’s a bad omen for them. Their fears appear to be founded when something latches onto the vessel and a mysterious parasite infects their water supply.

Pieta House has seen a “dramatic change in the volume of calls and texts” since the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis. The charity, which provides free therapy to those engaging in selfharm, with suicidal ideation, or bereaved by suicide, has seen a 49% increase in calls to their helpline and a 46% increase in text messages compared to this time last year. However, it has said it is “very vulnerable” as it receives 80% of its funding from donations and had to postpone Darkness Into Light fundraiser, which 250,0000 people were expected to take part and normally brings in approximately €6m.
Monopoly is the classic fast-dealing property trading board game. Players roll two six-sided dice to move around the game board, buying and trading properties, and developing them with houses and hotels. Players collect rent from their opponents, with the goal being to drive them into bankruptcy. No game is likely to bring a family together and to rip them apart than Monopoly - play at your own risk!
Ostensibly a children’s film about the loss of innocence, JoJo Rabbit is much more. A biting satire that’s hilarious and heartbreaking in equal measure, it deals with the thorny subject of the dying days of Germany’s Nazi regime and how to laugh at it. Criticised for its ‘cuddly’ portrayal of Hitler, played by the film’s director Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok of all things) its anti-hate, anti-war message is perfect for the fractured times we live in. Not only is it a very good movie, it’s a very important one that should be shown in schools and seen by everyone over the age of 10.

Whist, lads! Since the introduction of the new Covid-19 government restrictions, many people have been calling out for RTE to repeat hit TV shows from days gone by in a bid to help replace those social distancing blues with some nostalgia. Step up Pat Shortt’s Killinaskully. The comedy details the bizarre goings-on in a fictitious Irish village located in the hills of Ireland and features some hilarious characters such as Cllr Willie Connors and Sgt Dick O’Toole.
Hosted by Blindboy, of the Rubberbandits. An eclectic podcast containing short fiction, interviews and comedy. Blindboy is due a lot of credit for tackling tough issues like toxic masculinity and mental health on his hugely successful podcast. It is above all, however, a comedy podcast, and on that front it delivers in spades. Surreal, irreverent and strangely comforting.
The film follows Katie Taylor as she attempts to rebuild her career after a year of turmoil. As an amateur Taylor won everything there was to win including Olympic Gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games. She turned professional after a disastrous campaign at the 2016 Olympics. The film unravels the deeply personal reasons behind this career low and shows the champions grit to start over as a professional. Directed by Ross Whitaker, whose previous work includes Between Land & Sea and Unbreakable: The Mark Pollock Story.
Capricorn- This week is an 8 Capture brilliant ideas as they inspire you. Intellectual discovery provides a thrill. What you uncover now has long-term implications. Aquarius-This week is a 9 Abundance is available. Gather up more than you spend for a positive balance. Make agreements, and sign contracts. Pisces- This week is a 9 Take ground with a personal project. What you do now can have long-term benefit. Provide the leadership to take it to a new level.

In Loving Memory
7th Anniversary Catherine Kelly
Unseen and unheard but always near, So loved, so missed, so very dear
3rd Anniversary PETER POWER
2nd Anniversary BREDA MOONEY To be found in her embrace And we see the light of Heaven Shining from a mother’s face.
In loving memory of Kathleen Kelly late of 95 Dominic’s Place, who died on 3rd May, 2002. RIP. Softly in the morning You heard a gentle call You took the hand God offered you, And quietly left us all. The day you left us mother Our hearts just broke in two, The smallest part is still with us, And the biggest part with you For the rest of our lives we will miss you mother, Our secret tears still flow Oh, how we really loved you No one will ever know. We miss your smile, Your joking ways, we miss the things you used to say, And when old times we do recall, It’s then we miss you most of all. You were always there When we needed you, No task too great or small, With loving heart and willing hands, For us you did it all. Look around your garden Lord, And when she turns and smiles, Put your arms around her, And hold her for a while. -Sadly missed by daughter Marie, sons Michael, Bernard & John, daughters-in-law and grandchildren They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal, But neither time nor reason, Will change the way I feel. For no-one knows the heartache, That lies behind our smiles No-one knows how many times, We have broken down and cried. Gone from home that smiling face, Those cheerful, happy ways, The heart that won so many friends, In bygone, happy days. We want to tell you something, So there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think of, But so hard to be without. -Always remembered by son Paul, Sharon and Shannon. Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there. I do not sleep, I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow, I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain, When you awaken in the morning’s hush, I am the soft stars that shine at night, Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die. -Never forgotten by daughter Angela
Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. P.G.
11th Anniversary Martin Ryan In loving memory of our dear mother Catherine Kelly, 80 St Johns Park who died on 03 May 2013.

20th Anniversary Geraldine Hogan
16th & 13th Anniversary KathLeen & tony kelly
The moment that you died My heart was torn in two, One side filled with heartache, The other died with you. I often lie awake at night, When the world is fast asleep, And take a walk down memory lane, With tears upon my cheeks. Remembering you is easy, I do it everyday, But missing you is heartache That never goes away. I hold you tightly within my heart And there you will remain. Until the joyous day arrives, That we will meet again. - I will always love and miss you, your loving husband Michael You had a smile for everyone, You had a heart of gold, You left the sweetest memories, This world could ever hold To us you were someone special, Someone kind and true, You will never be forgotten For we thought the world of you. -Love you Mam, Mick & Fiona You gave us everything you had, Your time, your love & care, You never asked for anything And you were always there, Your life you lived unselfishly, With your gentle loving ways, No verse can say, No flowers repay, The wonderful mother We lost that day.
In loving memory of Geraldine Hogan 20 yrs gone on the 28th of April 2020 The beautiful memories And the love we have of you Will live in our hearts forever - From your loving daughter Hannah granddaughter Aoife sisters Theresa Breda Mary Ann and families, Forever in our hearts xxx o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore of you to obtain for me my request....(Pause) The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so you are the saint of miracles. O gentle and loving St Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, intercede for me and whisper my prayer into the ear of the sweet Infant Jesus who loved to linger in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will be yours. D.P.
- You were the best Mam, Gary
In loving memory of Kathleen and Tony Kelly, late of Hennessy’s Road. Kathleen whose 16th anniversary occurs on the 9th of May and Tony whose 123th anniversary occurs on the 26th May. Mam, You gave me everything you had Your time, your love and care, You never asked for anything And you were always there, Your needs were simple Your wants were few, If your family were happy So were you, A heart of gold, a life so true, Loved and respected by all you knew. - From your daughters and sons and their families Tony, No matter how life changes, No matter what we do, A special place within our hearts Is always kept for you. - From your sisters and brothers and their families
PRAYER TO ST JUDE Most holy apostle St Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus. I am so helpless and alone. I implore you to bring visible and speedy help. Come to my assistance in this great need (ask for favour). I will be ever mindful of this great favour, to always honour you as my special and powerful patron. Amen. Promise publication and favour will be granted P.G.
There’s magic in mother’s touch, And sunshine in her smile There’s love in everything she does To make our lives worthwhile We can find both love and courage Just by looking in her eyes Her laughter is a source of joy, Her words are warm and wise There is a kindness and compassion
A wife, a mother, a grandma too, This is the legacy we have from you. You taught us love and how to fight, You gave us strength, you gave us might. A stronger person would be hard to find, And in your heart, you were always kind. You fought for us all in one way or another, Not just as a wife not just as a mother. For all of us you gave your best, Now the time has come for you to rest. So go in peace, you’ve earned your sleep, Your love in our hearts, we’ll eternally keep. - Love you Mam, Brian The golden gate stood open, God saw you needed a rest, His garden must be beautiful As he only takes the best, Each day we think of you, Each night we say a prayer, We ask God to look after you With love and tender care.
In loving memory of Martin Ryan, late of 18 Ozanam St. Waterford, who died on 29th April 2009. We often sit and think of you, And think of how you died; To think you could not say goodbye, Before you closed your eyes. - From Seán & Molly.
8th Anniversary JACK O’ NEILL
To our Mum who is 7 years dead today Everyday in some small way Memories of you come our way. Though absent, you are always near Still missed, loved and always dear. - Sadly missed by your loving daughter Eleanor, sons Philip & John, granddaughter Sonia and great grand daughter Fiadh. .
58th Anniversary ROBERT BARRY
- Simply the best, Jake. No matter how life changes, No matter what we do, A special place within our hearts Is always kept for you. - We miss you Nanny, Sophie, Charlie and Alfie. A bouquet of beautiful memories, Sprayed with a million tears, Wishing God could have spared you, If just for a few more years. - Love you Mam, Michael, Teegan and Cameron. My dearest darling Sister, How can I find the words to say, To tell of how I miss you, Throughout each and every day. I miss our little chats, The way you’d listened to me moan, And how you’d always cheer me up, Whenever you would phone, Living life without you is so, Very hard to bear, And I’d give all I have to waken you, And see you standing there. - Always loved and missed, your sister Myra and family.
Fond memories of a loving Husband and father Jack O’Neill whose 8th anniversary occured on May 1st. Out of our lives you may be gone, But in our hearts you still live on, Will those who think of him today, A little prayer to Jesus say. -From your daughter Marina, and son-in-law Mick No longer in our lives to share, But in our hearts you are always there, A silent thought, a quiet prayer, For a special Dad in God’s care. -From Dermot, Miriam & grand children.
In loving memory of Robert Barry, late of Griffith Place, Waterford, who died 11th April 1962. A date thats filled with sadness, Returns to us today, To mark the way you left us, In such a sudden way, As time goes by without you, And days turn into years, They hold a thousand memories, And a million silent tears, Our lives have changed in many ways, Since we were all together, But memories of those happy days, Will live with us forever. -From his family.

Put your arms around her Lord, Don’t leave her on her own, For today is my Mams birthday, The first away from home, I think of you on your birthday Mam, But that is nothing new, For no day starts or ends, Without a thought of you, Every day I miss you Mam, Your laugh, your voice, your smile, I wish that I could hold you Mam, If only for a while, I know you’re up in heaven, Looking down on me, And when I look up to the sky, I know you are free, With an ache in my heart, I whisper low, Happy Birthday Mam, I love and miss you so. As I opened my eyes this morning, And looked to heaven above, I whispered Happy Birthday Mam, And sent you all my love, If you could be here with me, To celebrate today, We would laugh and awhile, Like we did before you went away, Our hearts still ache with sadness, And many tears still flow, What it meant to lose you, No one will ever know I whispered to the wind, Please catch this paper plane, I wrote Happy Birthday Mam on it, In Gods house now you reign, Our depth of love is vast, And as wide as deep blue sea, The story still unfolding of, The mother-ship and me, Between there and here, They say the veil is thin, Hear our mourning chorus, Form our hearts we sing, Have I told you lately that I love you, Have I told you there’s no-one else above you. - On your first birthday in heaven Mam, You are always in our thoughts, We will carry you in our hearts, Until we meet again Sadly missed by Linda, Ger, Joanna, Johnpaul and Tracey. A nanny’s love is special, A gift beyond compare, You only know the meaning, When she is no longer there, A special time, A special face, A special Nanny, I can’t replace, With an aching heart. I whisper low, I miss you Nanny, And love you so. - Loving memories of you

If Roses grow in Heaven Lord, Please pick a bunch for me, Place them in my sisters’s arms And tell her they’re from me. Tell her that I love her and miss her, And when she turns to smile, Place a kiss upon her cheek And hold her for awhile Because remembering her is easy, I do it every day, But there’s an ache within my heart, That will never go away, Treasured memories of you. - Sadly missed by your sisters and brothers, Ann, Mary, Jojo, Joan, Stephen and Paddy. We were we, Before we became you and I, We heard the rhythm of your heart, From the inside, At birth the cord was snipped, Placed on your chest, You took your babies, Home to nest, We were born rich, In love and laughter, We have the family bond, It’s all that really matters, All along the way, There were trials and tribulations, You sang the rhythm of my heart, At every celebration, For you there was nothing, We wouldn’t do, You are our mother, And we love you, We drove a thousand miles, Just to be together, You never once complained, You battled on and braved the weather, The mortal cord now snipped, The bond remains unbroken, In heaven hear our hearts, If any words were left unspoken, As God whispered low your name, Angels sang Amazing Grace, Our Gerry took your hand, Your mother kissed your face, Your father held you tight, Lucy and Laurence danced, Surrounded by the love, Ye shared upon the land, Tears they fall for you, Like rivers from our eyes, but your phoenix from the ashes, Fly free now in blue skies, Grief, the final gift of love, And parting such sweet sorrow, I miss you so much Mam, Ill miss you more tomorrow. Happy Birthday Mammy. - Always remembered fondly by your son and daughters in law, Paul, Emily, Damien and Eoin. No words to say to express what my heart wants to say My dear mother is everything to me, My heart skips a beat with a tear upon my cheek, Words too hard to speak, There is no other like my dear mother, Thank you for the love you showed us, Dear Lord pick a bunch of flowers and give them to my mam, And tell her I miss her happy birthday. -From your loving Son Johnpaul

We cannot send a birthday card, or even hold your hand, But one look up to Heaven and we know you’ll understand, And now it’s your birthday, it’s up to God above, To give you all our wishes, but most of all our love, Your special day we cannot share, to you our gift must be a prayer, So with a broken heart, we whisper low, Happy Birthday Mam we love you so. - From your heartbroken husband Paddy, daughter Suzanne, sons Aidan, Paul, Tony, Mark and Kenneth, grandchildren, great grandchildren, daughter in-laws and partners.
A rose once grew where all could see, Sheltered beside a garden wall, And as the days passed swiftly by, It spread its branches straight and tall, One day a beam of light shone through, A crevice that had opened wide, The rose bent gently toward its warmth, Then passed beyond to the other side, Now you who deeply feel its loss, Be comforted, the rose blooms there, It’s beauty even greater now, Nurtured by God’s own loving care. - From your loving family o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore of you to obtain for me my request....(Pause) The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so you are the saint of miracles. 1st Anniversary & Birthday Remembrance Sandra Kenneally Marie Whelan (nee Dunne) of 28 Kilcohan Park, Waterford, who died April 20, 2020 The family of the late Marie Whelan wish to express their sincere gratitude to all who telephoned, messaged or sent cards, offering their words of comfort and sympathies. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to the friends, neighbours and family who gathered to give Marie a hero’s farewell from the much loved street she called home for 34 years, she would have been both elated and honoured. For those of you that stood from a distance on the outskirts of the church and the graveyard, thank you for the emotional support. Thank you to the staff of the Fitzpatrick Medical Centre & Delanys Pharmacy, you went above and beyond in your professional duties, your support, advice and care during Marie’s illness, it was enormously appreciated then but even more so now. To Dr. Sean Nugent, Dr. Paula Calvert and her team, to Dr. Miriam O’ Connor, Dr. John Stratton, to the nurses on the Oncology Day Ward and on the Cherry Ward, thank you. Thank you, not only for the superb medical care which you provided but for the manner in which you delivered it, for all the words of encouragement, for the jokes, for the smiles, for your empathy, your honesty and especially for the moments you were simply just there. Thank you to all the staff at the Solas Center for your support during Maries illness, it was much needed and greatly appreciated. To the Public Health Nurses, thank you, your support was incredible from beginning to end. To Darina, we simply could not have cared for Marie as well as we did had it not been for your advice, it may have been something small for you but it meant the world to us. To the Palliative Home Care Team we do not have the words to relay our thanks to you all, your support and care ensured we could care for Marie in her own home which was always her wish. Your gentle consideration, your guidance, your patience, your ability to hear what went unspoken and ultimately your compassion will forever be in our gratitudes. A special thank you to Carina for your honest advice, it helped us make the right decision and to Mary, we could never articulate our thanks to you, only to say that not all angels reside in heaven, some like you walk the earth. Thank you to Fr. Jerry Chestnutt of the Sacred Heart Church for your kindness and for celebrating the funeral mass, to Sarah-Jane Lavery & David Hayes for the beautiful music and to Fr. Francis Xavier for officiating at the graveside. Thank you to Michael & all the staff at Thompson Undertakers for your professional service, understanding and guidance. A special word of thanks to Fiona Durand for always keeping Marie looking well, you were the only one who could ever do her hair just right. Finally to all of Marie’s relations and friends and to anyone who helped in any way; your contribution made our loss more bearable. It would be impossible to thank you all individually so please accept this acknowledgement as a token of our deepest appreciation. A mass will be offered up for your intentions. A GoFundMe page (In memory of Marie) has been set up to raise money for the Waterford Hospice, it will remain open until Maries Months Mind on May 20th

K.G. o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers.
