Doc quits Blues in Covid mystery MYSTERY surrounds the resignation of Waterford FC’s team doctor which came as two players reported symptoms consistent with Covid-19. Both players have since tested negative for the virus and the Blues training and playing programme is back on course. There was disruption, however, while tests were checked and one fixure was missed. Neither the club nor the doctor, Sinead Fitzpatrick, have been willing to account for her resignation. Dr Fitzpatrick said only that she was “very sad ... but happy I have done the right thing.” In a Facebook post she added: “Resigning when you feel things are very wrong is sometimes the right thing to do.” The club has declined detailed comment on the issue and manager John Sheridan did not speak to the media after Saturday’s home draw with Cork City. Assistant manager Fran Rockett took the press briefing but shed

no light on Dr Fitzpatrick’s resignation. “I wouldn’t be privy to that,” he said in reply to a question from Damien O’Meara of RTE Sport. “I’m not even on Facebook. It’s only hearsay from my point of view.” RTÉ Sport later submitted a list of questions to Waterford FC. Asked if any concerns about Covid-19 policies or procedures had been notified to club management by medical professionals since the club had returned to training, Waterford FC said they had received “no official complaints”. Seeking further clarification, RTÉ Sport asked if any issues were raised in a form that wouldn’t constitute “official or formal complaints”. The club replied saying that they felt their original answer clarified the issue. The club said that they do not “explain as to the reasons of any resignation of background staff”. Turn to Page 4

Shops are asked to put on a bold front
WATERFORD’S shops are being urged to put on a bright, new front. The City and County Council has launched a scheme that will cover up to half the cost of a shop front refurbishment up to €2,000. The aim is to make the city centre more attractive and boost footfall. “The hope is that by helping businesses improve their shop fronts, we will help create an attractive environment that residents, visitors, shoppers and businesses can enjoy,” said the mayor, Cllr Damien Geoghegan. Full details of the scheme and an application form can be found on Waterford Council’s website. Also on the website are guidelines for creating good shop fronts. The council says shop fronts are one of the most important elements in determining the character, quality and perception of retail street. “Shopfronts which are well designed and well maintained make for a more attractive street,” it says.
LOCAL job vacancies crashed in April as Covid-19 took a grip on the economy but new figures show that the market bounced back last month. IT staff and sales professionals are most in dermand, followed by insurance and, surprisingly, the motor trade. Hospitality is the sector hardest hit. The figures are from Hartley People, a recruitment and training agency with its headquarters in Waterford. They show that, after a buoyant January and February, the South East saw an 83% reduction in live vacancies in April. There was a substantial recovery across the region in July, when the number of live vacancies quadrupled. “This is largely due to renewed confidence in the market,” says Hartley People. “The introduction and subsequent extension of the EWSS (Employer Wage Subsidy Scheme) has given many SMEs a cushion and the ability to continue with business as normal. “Overall, we are seeing a lot of companies that had put plans on hold are now back on track after the initial shock of the lockdown.,” says the agency,
which claims to have he largest candidate database here in the South East Hartley People reports an in creased demand for IT staff in the South East. The motor trade industry has also seen a spike locally as has auctioneering. There has been a marked increase in the demand for high calibre sales professionals, as companies work hard to recover lost business. The insurance sector is going strong and contact call centres are also faring well. Multi-national manufacturing is returning to normal level of production. “Overall we’re seeing that many hiring freezes have been lifted and the outlook is overall one of positivity,” reports Hartley People . The big exception is in the hospitality sector where “the recovery from a jobs perspective has been somewhat anaemic thus far”. Currently, around 65% of all candidate interviews coming through Hartley People are taking place face-to-face. This is at the discretion of the employer and all safety advice must be taken and followed.

Waterford FC also stated that no member of the club’s playing, management or administrative staff has travelled to any country outside the green list . Waterford’s SSE Airtricity League match against Sligo Rovers was postponed after the first player complained of symptoms. The match has been re-scheduled for August 18 at 5.45pm. It will be screened live on the Airtricity League streaming platform at watchloi.ie. Since the Legue restart the Blues have recorded a win over Shelbourne and Saturday’s draw with Cork. A Waterford TD, meanwhile, has said that the recent spike in Covid-19 cases has highlighted the importance of rapid testing, followed by quick action.
“The increase in the number of diagnosed cases is linked to the fact that there has been an increase in testing,” said Sinn Féin spokesperson on Health, David Cullinane. “Rapid testing must then be followed by quick action.” Referring to problems with meat factories, he called for “more robust preventative action”. John Hume put country before party
J
John Hume led Ireland out of darkness so it was fitting that Ireland lit a candle for John Hume - thousands of candles, in fact, in homes and churches all over the country. I don’t suppose they lit many candles on Belfast’s loyalist Shankill Road but I heard a Shankill woman on television declare that she had “said a wee prayer ... I just loved that man, so I did.” Among all the fine words and grand oratory, this stood out as the most heartfelt of tributes, possibly the one that John would have liked best. Sinn Féin’s northern leader, Michelle O’Neill, and the party’s former president, Gerry Adams , were among those who paid tribute and it was hard not to contrast the restrained and dignified funeral of Mr Hume with the funeral in June of the republican, Bobby Storey, which both Ms O’Neill and Mr Adams attended. At another time, John Hume’s funeral might have drawn a million mourners to the streets of Derry and other towns, but
Michael Wolsey his family and friends would not risk lives by encouraging a breach of the Covid-19 restrictions. The republicans who organised Mr Storey’s funeral showed no such concern, turning what was, no doubt, a sad and genuine family occasion, into a showpiece extravaganza. The different styles typify the differing approach to politics taken by Sinn Féin’s leadership and other nationalist politicians, most obviously Mr Hume who always put his country before his party. The names of John Hume and Gerry Adams will be forever linked because the HumeAdams talks paved the way for

Pic Aileen Drohan peace. But the men were not equal sides of an equation. Without John Hume there might have been no peace process. Without Gerry Adams there might have been no need for one. John Hume helped found the SDLP to give a political voice to the Civil Rights Movement, which he also helped found and which exposed the rotten structure that years of unionist government had built in Northern

Ireland. The IRA undermined the Civil Right Movements and subverted its peaceful protests. Following the Sunningdale Agreement in 1973, John Hume and the SDLP (then led by Gerry Fitt) entered a power-sharing executive at Stormont, which was as good as the present one. In some respects it was better: the coalition was voluntary, ministers worked together like a proper cabinet and there was a statutory all-island dimen-
sion in the form of a Council of Ireland. The council had limited authority and, in fact, never met, but the structure was there and could have been improved and extended if the executive had survived. One reason it didn’t survive was that the IRA never gave it a chance. Its continuing campaign weakened the authority of the SDLP and made life impossible for those unionists who were willing to share power. There were other reasons for the failure of the executive: loyalist violence, divisions in unionism and the total ignorance of Northern Ireland displayed by two British governments. But the IRA played its part. Mr Adams, as we all know, was not a member of the IRA, nor was he the most influential voice in Republicanism at the time of the Sunningdale collapse. But he became a very influential voice over the next 25 years while the Provos continued their murderous campaign. John Hume brought Gerry Adams in from the cold and was vilified for it. He sacrificed his party for the sake of peace,
opening the door to normal politics for Sinn Féin who would soon devour the SDLP. John Hume was the architect of the Good Friday Agreement which, in 1998, allowed Sinn Féin to enter a new powersharing executive: Sunningdale for slow learners, as it was billed by that other great man of peace, Séamus Mallon. Gerry Adams also took chances to bring about peace and deserves thanks for that, but our gratitude should be qualified. If someone is bashing your head against a wall you will be thankful when they stop, but you are bound to reflect that it would have been better if they had never attacked you in the first place. John Hume never attacked anyone; he worked for a lifetime to make the attacks stop. I have respect for Gerry Adams but I find it ridiculous and shocking that he should be equated with John Hume, as Michelle O’Neil and Mary Lou McDonald did in their tributes. Mr Hume’s equals are from a different time and a different league: Charles Stewart Parnell and Daniel O’Connell.

Greenway trail will extend from Wexford to Cork
Save the wood for the trees - councillor A COUNCILLOR wants a tree preservation order on Tramore’s Crobally Wood. Cllr Joe Conway says it is under “imminent threat from the irrepressible encroachment of housing”. “It is a wood with a variety of trees, most notably Monterey Pines,” said the Independent councillor. He said the woods compose a lovely vista on the main entrance to the town. “They have survived on their own and prospered for the best part of a century,” he said. “Why in heavens name would we countenance cleaving them away with chainsaws in one day? So many other creatures live there, providing a hard-won diversity. Our own people need houses also, but it should not be outside the wit of planners and developers to provide houses in areas that do not wreak havoc on lovely amenities of our town.” Cllr Conway has asked Waterford Council for a tree preservation order. “It would be environmental vandalism to do otherwise,” he said.
the funding to recommence services as soon as possible,” said Mr Ó Cathasaigh . People Before Profit has organised petitions calling for the bus services to be restored. “The provision of a double decker bus service on the Waterford to Dunmore route is urgently needed”, said the party’s Úna Dunphy. “It must be in place before the schools reopen.”
THE prospect of a greenway stretching all the way from Rosslare to Cork has been raised by a new round of government funding. €80,000 has been provided to assess the possibility of linking the existing Waterford Greenway to the Cork county boundary. The 8.5 km section would run from Dungarvan to to the townland of Ballyduff Upper and could eventually link with the Cork town of Mallow. At the same time, €58,000 has been allocated to assess the possibility of a greenway link with Rosslare. The 58 km section would run from Rosslare Europort to the port of Bellview and connect with the Waterford Greenway. Fine Gael Senator John Cummins welcomed the funding . “Funding has already been allocated for the extension of the Waterford Greenway from Bilberry to the city centre and this will link into the New Ross greenway which is underway via the North Quays,” he explained. “The vision is to create an
integrated network of safe, off-road, walking and cycling routes nationally, and the €80,000 being allocated to fund the appraisal of route options from Dungarvan to the Cork boundary is very exciting.” Green Party TD for Waterford, Marc Ó Cathasaigh, said the plan was to eventually link Mallow, in Co Cork, to Dungarvan through Ballyduff. He pointed out that that a further €200,000 had been allocated to complete the Suir Blueway from Clonmel to Carrick-on-Suir. He said the plan would cement Waterford’s position as a premier destination for cycling: “We have seen the enormous success of the Waterford Greenway in drawing visitors to the region and in promoting cycling locally,” Mr Ó Cathasaigh, said. “Using the greenway as a lynchpin, we are now looking at broadening that network pushing outwards to New Ross and Rosslare in one direction, and onwards from Dungarvan into Co Cork in the other.”
A FUNDING package to support Warterford’s North Quays project is expected to come before the Government next month. The reassuring news was delivered by Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien to local politicians. In a letter to Senator John Cummins, Mr O’Brien said he had requested his officials and his colleague, the Minister for Public Expenditure, “to expedite the technical evaluation of the Cost Benefit Analysis”. Mr O’Brien said “a whole project funding support package is likely to be put before Government for consideration and approval in September.” The message was reinforced by a statement released by the Fianna Fáil Councillors Grouping on Waterford City and County Council praising “the speed with which the
long-stalled €100 million State investment in the North Quays project has advanced in only four weeks, now that the financing departments are under the direct control of Fianna Fáil ministers”. It followed a second meeting with Mr O’Brien, attended by Minister of State Mary Butler (FF), Green TD Marc Ó Cathasaigh, Independent TD Matt Shanahan and Senator Cummins (FG). The statement from the FF councillors said Ms Butler had received written assurances from Mr O’Brien of his strong support to the project which will develop the quays and link them to the city centre. The councillors said Mr O’Brien had confirmed that “whole project” funding would be brought to cabinet for approval nest month. “It is believed that the investment has
the support of the other directly involved minister, Fianna Fail’s Michael McGrath in his role of public expenditure,” said the statement. The Chairman of the Fianna Fáil Councillors grouping, Cllr Tom Cronin said : “The last ten years versus the last four weeks are like night and day. “Waterford City and County Council sought out the largest investment in our history and for years we were given the run around by the previous government who were asked to provide roughly a quarter of the money. “ He said that “in only weeks, Fianna Fail’s ministers have obliterated this sluggish timeline, instilled confidence in our private sector partners, rewarded Waterford Council for thinking bold and ensured the economic impact is felt right across the county”.

Bus gears up for return run BUS services to Portlaw and Dunmore East could soon be restored, a TD has said. Green Party deputy Marc Ó Cathasaigh said he expected the National Transport Authority to help solve the problem “in the coming weeks” by supporting the licensed services from Portlaw and Dunmore East, operated by Suirway, and the Slieverue-Ballygunnar route,
operated by JJ Kavanagh. These services to Waterford city have been suspended since March, with no replacement provided for commuters dependent on public transport. “It is my understanding that the NTA is currently engaging with both JJ Kavanagh and Suirway, with a view to agreeing the appropriate mechanism and

Pelagic Magic
book of the week
with Justin Ivory
Manx Shearwater (Photo – Brian Carruthers) August and September heralds the annual seabird migration when thousands of seabirds are leaving their breeding colonies to head back to their wintering quarters. Birders in turn migrate to headlands along the Western and South-western seaboard to stare out to sea to catch distant views of these birds as they stream by far out on the horizon. So how to get closer to the birds for better views? Well, the obvious thing is to take to a boat and travel out to sea where they are! Chuck some chum in the water and wait for the birds to come! Chum, a mixture of fish bits, blood and oil, is like crack-cocaine for seabirds – they go mad for the stuff. Before you know it the boat will be surrounded by all manner of seabirds – Stormpetrels, Skuas, Shearwaters and the much sought after, rarity, Wilson’s Storm-petrel. These tiny, dainty, seabirds are southern hemisphere breeders who winter in the northern hemisphere and literally “dance” across the chum-slick! These boat trips are known as “pelagics”, so named after the birds they hope to track down, which are pelagic species. Pelagic birds are ones that inhabit the open sea only returning to shore to breed. Sightings of whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals and other marine-megafauna such as Sunfish and Bluefin Tuna are welcome added bonuses on these trips. Recent pelagic trips from Cape Clear and Baltimore in West Cork have thrown up 22 species of seabird, several species of marine mammal and Bluefin Tuna. If you wish to experience the magic for yourself then check out Paul Connaughton’s Shearwater Wildlife Tours (www. shearwaterwildlifetours.com ) which have West Cork pelagic trips running through to October.

A mothers love is something, That no one can explain, It’s made of deep devotion of sacrifice and pain, My mothers love was all of these things, It’s the greatest treasure known, And the greatest mother in the world, Was the one I called my own, When God gave you to me, These are the things he forgot to say, Please try and understand, When I take her back someday, Oh God it’s been so lonely, So heartbreaking and so sad, But I will never forget to thank you, For the wonderful mother I had. - Never forgotten, love and kisses from your daughters Carolin, Bernie, Eleanor, Pamela and Alison, sons Danny and Mark, sons and daughters in law xxxx Nanny, God looked around his garden, And saw an empty space, He then looked down from Heaven And saw your tired face, He wrapped his arms around you And whispered Come to Rest, His garden must be beautiful Because he only takes the best. - With love from your 21 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

It seems like only yesterday we were made to part, But it’s been another year and one that is a very different for us all. Where being apart means more to show our love than being together. Recall the joyous times we shared together and celebrate. More so, in all these parting times that have come our way. In all the words we need to say, In all the steps that we must take, In all the things we ought to do, It’s your support and strength that wills us through.
