A fáilte fightback for tourism trade SIGNS of recovery are beginning to emerge for the tourist industry in Waterford. With the vaccine programme starting to make an impact on Covid-19 transmission figures, hotels and guest houses here are reporting an improvement in advance bookings. Aidan Quirke, Waterford representative of the South East branch of the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF), said positive developments have allowed hotels in Waterford to start planning towards reopening. The latest IHF survey of bookings for July, August and September, shows the South East is leading the way to recovery. It shows occupancy rates here of 38% for July, 33% for August and 26% for September. The next best region is the South West with comparitive figures of 35%, 33% and 23%. The national average figures are 23 % for July, 21% for August and 18% for September. . Hotels and guesthouses are hoping for a re-opening in June and Mr Quirke urged people to

Waterford trainer Henry de Bromhead with Rachael Blackmore after Minella Times triumphed in the Grand National at Aintree, while the de Bromhead trained Balko des Flos came second plan their holidays and breaks early while there is plenty of choice and availability around. He said: “Staycations were a real positive last summer and we expect booking levels to continue to rise over the coming weeks.” But he warned: “As the latest IHF survey shows, there is still a long way to go before hotel
occupancy reaches even last summer’s levels. Recovery will be a challenge for the hotel sector this year, requiring continued Government support through to 2022.” An MEP, meanwhile, has said Waterford’s position as a leading destination for tourism must be a focus as restrictions are lifted.
Ireland South MEP Deirdre Clune was welcoming the announcement of a fund to help businesses serving food pay for more outdoor seating. She said: “Measures such as these are very welcome and will certainly help the tourism and hospitality sectors recover from an awful year.” >> Night market plan: Page 4

It’s the great mystery art sale
MORE than 30 artists from County Waterford are taking part in the Incognito 2021 online art sale in aid of the Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation. Some 3,000 original postcardsized artworks will go on sale Thursday, April 22 . You can pick the piece of art you want to buy but you won’t discover who the artist is until you’ve bought it. Among those providing works for sale this year are The Edge, Bob Geldof, fashion designer Paul Costelloe, and Nobel prize winner Dr William Campbell. Waterford artists taking part include Aidan Crotty, Cora Cummins from Villierstown, Laura McNamara from Dungarvan, Kiki Roosli from Tramore and Marie-Jeanne Jacob from Waterford city. In the five years since its inception, Incognito has raised almost €450,000 for Jack & Jill’s home nursing care for children with complex medical conditions. House price slips after a year of steady rises PROPERTY prices in Waterford have slipped, after rising steadily throughout the past year. In the first quarter of this year, the median price of houses in the county fell by €1,000, to €179,000, the latest MyHome.ie Property Report reveals. The asking price for a fourbed semi-detached house in Waterford was down by €1,000 over the quarter to €219,000. The asking price for a threebed semi-detached house in the county remained unchanged over the quarter at €185,000. This represents an increase of €10,500 compared to this time last year. The price of a four-berdroom house here has risen b y €4,000 in the year and that is also the median increase. The median price is the ‘middle price’, the point at which there are as many houses cheaper as dearer. It is regarded as a more accurate reflection of the market than the average price which can be distorted by a few very cheap or very expensive properties. The number of properties for sale in Waterford on MyHome. ie is down 7% compared to the last quarter of 2020. The number has risen by 2.5% compared to this time last year. In the city, the number of properties for sale is flat over the quarter, and up by 25% com-
pared to this time last year. The average time for a property to go ‘sale agreed’ in the county after being placed for sale now stands at just over four and a half months. The report found that annual asking price inflation rose by 4.2% nationwide, by 4.1% in Dublin and by 4.8% elsewhere around the country. The national price trend for the first quarter was similar to Waterford’s - flat at 0% nationally, while increasing by 1% in Dublin, and falling by 0.4% elsewhere around the country. The MyHome.ie report shows asking prices. Its findings were supported by the Real Estate Alliance survey, which shows actual selling prices. The REA survey reported that the average second-hand three-bed semi in county Waterford has increased by 1.4% to €185,000 in the last three months It said the market in Waterford city was steady for the first quarter, with prices currently at €230,000, a 7% increase since this time last year. The REA Average House Price Survey concentrates on the actual sale price of Ireland’s typical stock home, the three-bed semi, giving an accurate picture of the secondhand property market in towns and cities.
Debenham pickets pledge to fight on FORMER Debenhams workers in Waterford have vowed to continue their fight for better redundancy terms. They have been maintaining a picket at City Square where the Debenham’s store closed more than a year ago. Representatives from local trades unions and some political parties marked the event by joining the Debenhams workers in a short march and rally in the city centre . On 9 April last year, Debenhams told staff that the company was going into liquidation and would not be reopening its Irish outlets. The pickets have focused on preventing stock and com-
pany assets being removed from closed stores. Mandate National Coordinator Brian Forbes said the year-long dispute will “leave a historical legacy”. “Since they began this strike they’ve been clear that not only are they doing this for themselves, they are doing it so that no other worker has to go through the same trauma they had to endure,” he said. RTE is reporting that Debenhams employees will be able to claim for a range of supports including equipment, childcare and accommodation if they accept a €3 million retraining and upskilling fund. now under discussion.

New market could light up the nights TRAMORE is to get a new market this summer and if a councillor has his way it will add to the seaside town’s evening attractions . Councillor Eamon Quinlan wants the area around the old railway stastion to be designated a night market. This would make it different from other markets, he says. “We have numerous markets now with more on the way,” the Fianna Fáil councillor told Waterford Today. “The cultural quarter will have one with a strong artistic element. Priest’s Road has a country style market and so on. For Tramore to stand out and be a success it needs to be brave and do things differently. “A night market that starts at 5pm and runs into the early night would be amazing. We
can obviously control what goes there to ensure there isn’t noise or anything disruptive but a night market, with an evolving offering, would complement many of the nearby hotels, amusements and late evening scene.” Waterford City and County Council recently updated byelaws to create an area around the railway station for up to 12 casual traders. The council has also received national funding for improvement works that will serve as a backdrop to this new market which, it is hoped, will be up and running as the country recovers from Covid. Local authorities are also receiving funding under a new Outdoor Dining Scheme aimed at helping recovery of the tourist industry. Part One of the scheme
will provide funding of up to €4,000 for individual tourism and hospitality businesses to develop and increase their own outdoor seating capacity. Part Two lets local authorities apply for grants of up to €200,000 for permanent outdoor public dining spaces in towns and urban centres. Waterford TD and Minister of State, Mary Butler, welcomed the scheme. “It has the potential to enable individual tourism and hospitality businesses in Waterford to increase their dining and seating capacity in the short-term,” she said. “And, secondly, it will enable a long-term strategy for local authorities to develop appropriate permanent weatherproofed outdoor dining infrastructure.”
Chefs make a meal of it
TOP chefs will re-invent fine dining at home as part of Festival Spirit, a new event created by the organisers of West Waterford Festival of Food. It features a collaborative six-course meal kit. The dinner for two — priced at €165 — is available for delivery nationwide, and is a collaboration between chefs Roisin Horsom of Crews Restaurant, Paul Flynn of the Tannery, Ian Doyle of
Cliff House Hotel, and Judit McNally of Ormond’s. Irish Gourmet Butter will provide lightly salted butter for the occasion and Eunice Power will contribute her Dungarvan Black Rock Irish Stout bread. The three-day festival will also see the launch of an online gifting portal and the pilot of a children’s adventure trail in partnership with six local cafés, which will be rolled out across Waterford over the
coming months. The festival will run from 23 to 25 April, with 10 curated talks, experiences and workshops — all virtual and socially distanced. Full details of Festival Spirit presented by West Waterford Festival of Food are available at www. westwaterfordfestivaloffood. com. Gardaí Seagull lands its sourdough in the city warn of
scammers on the line
TRAMORE’S popular Seagull Bakery is spreading its wings to a second outlet at Patrick Street in Waterford city. Founder, chief baker and creator, Sarah Richards, says she is ‘absolutely delighted’ to be taking its famous sourdough to the city. “We are passionate about serving the local community with wholesome and nutritious bread,” she says . “We are also thrilled to support and build upon the growing independent retail community in Waterford
city creating additional local employment and further supporting complementary local and Irish food producers,” says Sarah. The bakery will be serving its full selection of sourdough bread along with croissants, buns and other treats. It will be the first in the country to serve only filter coffee and will have a selection of 30 wines, mainly organic. Picture: Sarah and co-owner Conor Naughton. Photo: Patrick Browne.
THERE has been a rash of phone scams in Waterford. In one, members of the public receive a call from somebody pretending to be from the Department of Social Protection telling them their PPS number has been compromised. The caller asks for personal information, such as the PPS number or home address. Gardaí say thety are are receiving an ever increasing number of complaints in relation to fraudulent and illegal scams in the form of texts, emails, telephone calls to your mobile or landline or even through social media. The message can appear within a genuine thread of text messages that you may have received from a legitimate organisation. Gardaí advise thst you never click on a link of an unsolicited text and never give away personal data like PIN number, card numbers, passwords, or one-time codes They point out that banks would never request a customer return a card in such circumstances.

In Loving Memory
15th Anniversary MARGARET STACEY
10th & 9th Anniversaries Powell Betty & Reg
Unseen and unheard but always near, So loved, so missed, so very dear
1st Anniversary Mary Shanahan
10th Anniversary TERRY MURRAY The day you finally let is go, And left me more than sad, I wish that you could come back here, And fill back up this hole, You put it there a year ago, When your body left your soul, You always made me feel special, You were always there it seems, But after all this is too big, It’s only wishful dreams.
In loving memory of Margaret ‘Peggy’ Stacey, late of St. Anthonys, Lower Yellow Road, Waterford, who died 19th April, 2006 We speak your name with love and pride, We smile through tears we cannot hide, Death does not part us or distance divide, Each day of our life you walk by our side, Thank you for the years we shared, The love you gave and the way you cared, Look after her Lord as she takes her rest, For she was our mother and one of the best -Loved and missed always, William and Julie Grand Children Elizabeth, Luke, Adam Also Alan Great grandchildren ,Sinead, Niamh and Tommy Once I had something, that money could not buy, I had a special mother, But had to say goodbye, Photos of you I treasure, But they are all I have to touch, Of a mother I loved so dearly, And miss so very much -From Sharon, Derrick, Evan, Daniel and Lydia Mam, you suffered much in this sad world, And you tried so hard to smile, But still you kept on trodding, Over many a weary mile, Wishing God could have spared you, If just for a few more years, But you fell asleep without a fuss, And broke the hearts of all of us. A silent thought a secret tear, Keep your memory forever near. -Sadly missed by son Jimmy, daughter in law Marie and grand children
- Love you always dad, your daughter Sharon, Chicken and Tonya.
Remembering with love Mary Shanahan, late of Abbey Park, Ferrybank, who’s first anniversary occurs on the 27th April 2021. Mary, I miss you with all my heart. Not a day goes by that you aren’t in my thoughts and prayers. - Your loving and devoted husband, James (Shan) x Mums they are amazing, So special this is true, They always give and never take They forever think of you. Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail.A.K.

31st Anniversary Catherine dubber
Treasured memories of our dad, Terry Murray, late of 5 Andrew St. whom God called home on 12th April 2011. Mass offered. Goodbye to my Dad, Goodbye Dad, I had to say, A few years ago on a cold April day, I’ll remember the good times and try not to be sad, But saying goodbye still hurts so bad, I miss you more than I can express, My love for you will never grow less, I keep trying to imagine how I will go on, I realise tomorrow is another dawn, I know you’re in heaven above looking down on us with all your love, Only to whisper in our ear, Remember that I never stopped loving you dear, I’ll always remember the good times we had, Remember the man, my wonderful dad, I’ll remember you each and every day, And if I need to talk to you, I’ll just sit down and pray. One day we’ll be together again, To talk about all the places we’ve been, Until that time I’ll always treasure, Having you for a Dad was such a great pleasure. -Love you always Dad, miss you so much, your daughter Eileen and Johnny xxx
In loving memory of a dear mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, late of 100 Larchville Est., who sadly passed on the 18th April 1990
. Mam, When the emptiness of missing you, Is more than I can bear, I whisper “Mam I love you”, And always find you there, For you left behind your spiirt, It guides me like a light, Your gentleness surrounds me, To be with me all my life, And when the road is rocky, And I’m down and need a crutch, I remember you’re beside me, Just an inch too short to touch. -Loved and missed everyday by your daughter Joanie & Christy R.I.P. xx Our hearts are full of memories, With pride we speak your name, Though life goes on without you, It will never be the same, Those special days will not return, When we were all together, But with love and memories, You will walk with us forever. -Always remembered, your grandchildren & partners, and great grandchildren xx
Seems like yesterday, That we were together, Then I opened my eyes, To realise gone means forever. It hurts and it aches, Its slicing my heart, For the rest of my life,
We shall be apart. I’m waiting for the future, Hoping to see, That when I die, You’ll open up those gates for me. Having a Pops, With a heart of gold, Is my favorite treasure, Which will never grow old. Family reunions, Will never be the same, Cause you’re not there with us, To be stronger I aim. Your chair at the table, Is empty and cold, You need to come home, I need someone to hold. Do you know, How much we all love you, Do you realize, How much I trust you. You’re officially gone, But forever in my heart, You and me Pops, Together, yet apart. - love and miss you Pops, Ann, Alana, Kiely. Florida U.S.A. If I could write a story, it would be the greatest ever told, Of a kind and loving father, Who had a heart of gold. If I could write a million pages, But still be unable to say, Just how much I love and miss him, Every single day. I will remember all he taught me, I’m hurt but won’t be sad, ‘Coz he’ll send me down the answers, And he’ll always be my Dad. -love you always Dad, your daughter Kay, Benny and Avery. New Jersey, U.S.A If I had one wish to make, I’d use it up on you, just to see you one more time, In the heavenly sky so blue, All I have are the memories, The good ones and the bad,
I feel warmth around me, Like your presence is so near, And I close my eyes to visualize, Your face when you were here, I endure the times we spent together, And they are locked inside my heart, For as long as I have those memories, We will never be apart. Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). In loving memory of Betty Powell, late of Tir Connell Avenue, Lismore Lawn, whose 10th anniversary occurs on 8th April, and her husband Reg Powell, whose 9th Anniversary occurs on May 19th. Mum, Nine years since that sad day, You closed your eyes and went away. A sudden call from God on high, We had no chance to say goodbye. The hardest thing in life to bear, Is to want your mother And she’s not there. We wish that we could see you Mum, Sitting in your chair, We wish that we could go back home, And find you waiting here. A million words cannot express, Our love, our sorrow, our emptiness. No more tomorrows for us to share, But yesterday’s memories will always be there. No verse can say, no flowers repay, The beautiful mother we lost that day. - Love always from your daughters Virginia and Elaine. Dad, Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us everyday. Unseen, unheard but always near, Always loved, missed and very dear. If memories bring us closer, Then we are never far apart, God has you in his keeping, While we have you in our hearts. - Love always from your daughters Elaine, Virginia and their families.

Smooth Newt (Photo Justin Ivory) Fascinated by newts since a child, I was delighted to find plenty of Smooth Newt (Lissotriton vulgaris) activity in my 5km over the last few weeks. Whenever I see them swimming, I can’t help thinking of them as miniGodzillas……and that is meant as a compliment! I guess to the many invertebrates on their menu, which includes the tadpoles of frogs, they are. We only have 3 amphibian species in Ireland, and we get 2 of them in here in Wicklow, the Common Frog (Rana temporaria) and the Smooth Newt (Lissotriton vulgaris). The Smooth Newt is the only member of the Urodela (the tailed amphibians) found in Ireland. During the breeding season, which typically lasts from late February to June, the males have a wavy crest along their backs. And just like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever (blank, puzzled looks at this juncture from those under 45), they try to impress females with their best dance moves. After mating the female lays the eggs (up to 300 of them) individually, wrapping each of them in the leaves of an aquatic plant, as opposed to the big clumps of spawn of the Common Frog. About 3 to 4 weeks later the newt tadpoles emerge. Unlike frog and toad tadpoles, newt larvae develop their front legs first, then their back legs. Once they have absorbed their gills and left the water, they are known as ‘efts’. It takes 2 to 3 years for these efts to reach maturity. Adult Smooth Newts are typically about 10cm long. In late summer both juveniles and adults leave the water and spend the rest of the year in terrestrial habitats such as long grass, woodland, marshes, and hedgerows. In winter they will hibernate among tree roots, in holes in walls and in log piles.

HOROSCOPES

the last resort Jan Carson
shadow and bone Netflix, from April 23rd
why did you kill me Netflix, from April 16th
THIS was originally read on BBC4, and Carson’s poignant and touching book introduces us to 10 interlinked stories set in a caravan on the Antrim coast. Well, why not? They are at times hilarious, deeply engaging and sometimes, deeply sad. Frankie is haunted by his daughter’s death. Vidas, homeless and far from Lithuania. Anna struggles to shake off the ghost of her overbearing mother. Kathleen struggles to accept her daughter for who she is. Malcolm, a failed illusionist, makes one final attempt to reinvent himself. Alma faces her toughest case yet as she tries to help them all find what they’ve lost. Highly original.
Shadow and Bone is an effort to win the hearts and minds of fantasy fans. This series is based on Leigh Bardugo’s bestselling Grishaverse novels and the convoluted plot revolves around orphaned mapmaker Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) who discovers she has an extraordinary power that may, when harnessed, be able to solve the problems of her war-torn homeland. Meanwhile, dark forces — never! — are awaiting to manipulate her as she is thrown into a world of deceit and paranoia where her allies may be revealed to be her enemies.
FOR all the murder fans out there — and there seems to be a lot of them — this is the latest true crime offering from Netflix. After her daughter is murdered in a gang-related hit, Crystal Theobald’s mother Belinda Lane vows to bring those responsible to justice and ends up on a dark, decade-long journey through cyberspace hunting her daughter’s killers. The documentary takes a hard look at the anonymity of social media. And as Belinda trawls through the subterranean life of her daughter, the documentary not only uncovers the young girl’s murderers but also tries to piece together who Crystal was.

“I’ve always thought what is complicated is rarely important and what is important is rarely complicated,” says McWilliams about his podcast, which aims to make economics easy, uncomplicated and accessible. And that it does. But there’s a lot more than economics at the heart of McWilliams’s cogent debunking of recent issues, such as the Suez Canal, crazy house prices and the rise of the far Right in Europe. Always entertaining without being patronising, McWilliams is the kind of teacher we all wanted in school.

I’d like to help you son, but you’re too young to vote
I
Michael Wolsey
in the old Eddie Cochran song, Summertime Blues, a frustrated teenager seeks political help to beat his boredom problems. Well I called my congressman And he said, quote: ‘I’d like to help you son, But you’re too young to vote’ That won’t be the case much longer if Senator Malcolm Byrne has his way. The Fianna Fáil senator wants to drop the voting age from 18 to 16. When I was 16 I knew exactly what was wrong with the world and how to put it right. Fortunately, the world was not impressed and, so, was spared a pan-national Marxist government headed by Bernadette Devlin and orchestrated by John Lennon. When I was 18 I was less sure about my 16-year-old certain-
ties. When I was 20 I could see a wider range of problems and by the time I was 25 I was pondering a few different solutions. I had gained a bit of sense, you might say, although I think what I had really acquired was a stake in society. By the time I was 18, I had a job and was paying tax. So I was interested in how the government proposed to spend my money , both immediately and in the future - although, like most 18-year-olds, my idea of the future didn’t stretch beyond the next couple of years. By the time I was 25, my horizon had extended. I had a wife and a daughter and a mortgage on a house. Things that never crossed the mind of 16-yearold me had become important, like the interest rate charged by banks, the availability of preschool education, the state of the health service. Acceptance of personal responsibility is what qualifies

us to take a share of national responsibility. That’s why I am opposed to this idea from Senator Byrne. I’m not suggesting that voting rights be confined to taxpayers in employment. Nowadays, with the huge extension of further education, that would leave lots of people unable to vote un-

til they are in their late twenties. Indeed, I am not proposing any link at all between employment and the franchise. I just think 16-year-olds are too young to vote. They are children. We don’t seem to like that word any more, in a world where primary school pupils have become stu-
dents, teenage girls are called young women and we listen with respect while unelected Greta Thunberg lectures elected leaders who are four times her age. But they are children, our children and grandchildren, and they should be free to enjoy the last of their childhood without sharing responsibility for the welfare of the world. If they are interested in politics, they should be free to indulge in fantasies about Marxist republics, or whatever else seems right and exciting, without the worry that a vote of theirs might help turn the dream into a living nightmare. So I hope our elected representatives will do the children a favour and ignore Senator Byrne’s attempt to burden them with electoral responsibility . Note you, it’s only a limited responsibility the senator has in mind. He wants the franchise extended just for local govern-
ment and European elections. So 16-year-olds could have a vote for the running of a county or a continent, but not a country. That’s a rather patronising view for someone who believes, as Senator Byrne says, that “young people have illustrated their maturity in recent years on everything from climate change and human rights to community youth facilities”. I hope they remember that if they ever get a chance to vote for the former Wexford TD. Although they won’t be able to vote for or against him if he stays in the Seanad. Hardly anyone gets a say in who is elected to the upper house. Councillors and outgoing senators can vote along with TDs and a select bunch of university graduates. This small cabal is the Seanad’s only electorate. Senator Byrne says he wants to “encourage participation in politics”. He should start in his own backyard.
