Better broadband - on the double WATERFORD has taken two important steps towards the installation of faster broadband in both the city and the county. Rural and Community Development Minister, Heather Humphreys, launched the county’s Broadband Connection Points . And telecoms provider SIRO announced a one-gig fibre broadband rollout in the city which it hopes will reach 9,000 homes and businesses by end of the year. The connection points, a government programme backed by Vodafone, deliver high-speed internet at publicly accessible sites. They will improve access for remote work, study and community projects. They are an interim measure to provide rural commuinities with connectivity while National Broadband Ireland works to supply fibre broadband directly to each door. Waterford’s connection points are at Knockanore Community Centre, Ballysaggart Community Centre, Modeligo Community Hall and Mount

Melleray Community Hall. The SIRO development replaces out-dated copper connections in Waterford city with fibre which is faster and more energy-efficient . The company, in a joint venture with the ESB and Vodafone, is investing €7.5m in Waterford. Its faster fibre broadband will now be avaialable across Ferrybank, Ballybricken, Gracedieu, and Lismore with plans to roll-out to additional areas such as Templar’s Hall and Foxwood by the end of year. SIRO says dermand for the service has increased hugely with the growth in remote working and online shopping. The company’s chief executive John Keane said the investment of €7.5m in Watertford was a recognition of the city’s importance as a growing commercial centre and its potential for economic development and job creation. He said good digital connectivity was “essential to the city’s future growth and Covid 19 recovery”.

WATERFORD is marking time with a new museum in the Viking Triangle. The Irish Museum of Time is the first of its kind in the country and houses the finest collection of Irish watches and clocks in the world. The collection is not limited to Ireland. Also on display are early European timepieces, the earliest dating back to 1551, along with clocks and watches from Switzerland, England, Germany, France, Italy, Austria, the Netherlands, USA, Canada, Russia, Japan and
Australia. It is set out over two floors of a former Methodist church. The neo-Gothic style building dates to the 1880s and stands beside the ruins of the medieval Franciscan Friary church. The Museum of Time was opened on Monday by heritage minister Malcolm Noonan . He commended two collectors, David Boles and Colman Curran, for sharing their collections and making the museum possible. Mayor Damien Geoghegan also thanked the collectors for their
generosity and philanthropy. Colman Curran said he was proud to witness the official opening . “The museum is not only a collection of clocks and watches but also a place to discover the story and the science of time,” he said. Opening time call for city’s new pub
WORK will start next week on the first Wetherspoon’s pub in Waterford city. The pub at Arundel Street and Broad Street is scheduled to open on Tuesday 14 December. It is to be called The Arundel Gate, taking its name from the gate that once stood in Arundel Lane and was part of Waterford’s ancient city walls . The pub will be on two floors and will feature two enclosed courtyard terraced gardens, as well as an open kitchen. Historical photos and details of local history, as well as artwork and images of local scenes and characters of the town, will be displayed in the pub, together with information boards relating to events. The pub will also feature commissioned artwork. Wetherspoon chief executive John Hutson said he was delighted to announce that work would start on June 28. “Hopefully our investment will act as a catalyst for other businesses to invest in Waterford,” he said.
From pupil to principal as schools join forces CIARA McSweeney has been appointed principal of the primary school in Dunmore East where she was a pupil. The school where she studied and later taught, Light of Christ Girls NS, is amalgamating with Killea Boys’ NS, and Ms McSweeney will be in charge of the new Réalt Na Mara National School. Ms McSweeney (right), who comes from a long line of teachers, has over 20 years’ experience in the classroom. After leaving St. Patrick’s College of Education, she started teaching at Jobstown in Tallaght She then moved to St. Mary’s National School in Ballygunner where she taught for 20 years. She has spent two years as principal of Light of Christ National School and is delighted with her new role. “I did all my home teaching practices in Killea so I feel I have a link to both schools,” she says. “I have very happy memories of my time as pupil in Light of Christ NS in the 1980s. “It was a Convent of Mercy
School back then and we were in the big building overlooking the harbour. “We must have had the most scenic playground in the country.” There is huge excitement in both schools and the wider community in Dunmore East. Preparations are underway at both schools to mark the historic amalgamation and the girls and boys who will be classmates from September met last week on the beach to build sandcastles and share an alfresco lunch. Reált na Mara will be on a split site, with the Village Campus housing the junior classes and the Killea Campus the senior pupils,. But Ms McSweeney hopes the new school which will be at the centre of the community. “ It is an exciting time for the village and I will do my best to lead the teaching and learning to benefit every child in our care,” she said. Outgoing Killea Boys NS principal, Willie Coogan, is returning to his home county of Kilkenny to take up a post.
Do we live in best place in Ireland? IS Waterford the best place to live in Ireland? If you think so, you could win the title for the Déise by sharing your views with a national newspaper. Any city, town, village, or island could be the ‘Best Place to Live in Ireland’. To claim the title for your homep lace all you have to do is to write a short submission explaining what makes it so special and send it to the Irish Times. The countrywide competition last took place in 2012, in the midst of the financial crisis. On that occasion Waterford city made it only as far as the long list of 25 Best Places to Live. Westport in Co. Mayo was
eventually selected as the overall winner. The Irish Times has relaunched the competition. The initiative will see each nominated location judged on specific criteria, including community spirit, local services, diversity and vibrancy of the local economy. “Our panel of judges and researchers will scour Ireland for its hidden gems and known paradises,” said Conor Goodman, chair of the juding panel. Anyone can enter by writing a short pitch about their place details at www.irishtimes.com/ bestplace. The closing date for entries is July 25.

No place like home if you seek the sun WATERFORD is the most sunny city in Ireland and the county is second in the sunshine league, being pipped to first place by our sunny neighbour, Wexford. The Sunny South East really lives up to its name, for Carlow comes third in the league, compiled by Legacy Communications, an independent brand marketing agency. It shows Wexford with 1,600 hours of sunshine in a year, 20 more than Waterford and 40 more than Carlow. Less predicatably, fourth ansd fith places go to Longford (1,520 hours) and Cavan (1,440 hours). The research paints a gloomy picture of the west. Mayo gets the least sunshine (1,059 hours), just ahead of Roscommon,
Leitrim and Galway. Waterford enjoys more sunshine than most of our neighbours in Britain. Our 1,580 hours compare with 1,400 for London, Brmingham and Manchester and beat
Blackpool (1,567) by a ray or two. Brighton is a long way ahead on 1,900 hours. Glasgow is on a gloomy 1,203 hours. The Legacy Communications research shows that southern Europe is in a league of its own. Rome sees an annual 2,500 hours of sunshine, Lisbon 2,799, Madrid 2,910 and Valetta in Malta tops them all with 2,957 hours. But the good news for Waterford’s tourist industry is that, for a sunny staycation, there’s no place like home. “Whether you fancy a relaxing staycation, an al fresco meal or a cheeky outdoor gin/pint, it’s clear that heading to Waterford will increase your chances of getting some Vitamin D,” says Micheál Brennan, Head of Search at Legacy Communications.
Golf classic twice as good
THE second Johnny Matthews Memorial Golf Classic will be a two-day event. The first day of the Champagne Scramble will be held at Faithlegg Golf Club on Saturday, June 26, with the second day is to be played out at Williamstown Golf Club on Saturday, August 7. It follows the success of the one-day event held at Williamstown Golf Club last year to commemorate the celebrated Waterford FC player and manager, Johnny
Matthews. That event raised €4500 for Muscular Dystrophy Ireland and this year’s classic will once again aid MDI along with Cystic Fibrosis Ireland. The timesheet for the first event is fully booked but there is still some availability for the second day. “I’m overwhelmed by the support that we’ve once again received this year,” said organiser Jim Kealy. “After the success of last year, the popularity that everyone held Johnny in meant
Permits take the pain out of parking on prom
AS Tramore prepares for a busy summer, the local authority has moved to make parking easier for both visitors and residents. Tramore Summer Parking Permits are now available for online purchase and can be used by anyone who parks in the pay and display areas along the Prom. The permits will make trips to Tramore over the summer a lot more carefree. as visitors won’t have to think of change for the parking machines . The council points out that motor homes, motor caravans and camper van parking is only permitted on the Lower Prom for vehicles that fit within the

Rainbow flags cut in second attack
PRIDE flags in Waterford city have been removed for a second time. The rainbow flags - the gay rights’ emblem - were cut down and burned shortly after Waterford’s Pride of the Déise weekend . They were replaced but again cut from their flatgpoles and removed from the site on The Mall. Mayor Damien Geoghegan described the incident as “truly despicable”. He said the council would restore the flags . He backed a call by the Pride of the Déise festival who urged the public to show their support by flying a rainbow flag from their home or business. The incidents were condemned by Minister of State Mary Butler who said it was “appalling behaviour” and Sinn Féin’s David Cullinane who said “those responsible do not speak for Waterford”. A man in his 40s has been charged with criminal damage and is due to appear in court next month.

Let’s raise a glass of fine Burgundy to Mr Bloom
M
Michael Wolsey
It was thoughtless of the Government not to have arranged the return of indoor dining a little earlier, to accommodate Bloomsday. Now anyone planning to go on the June 16 food trail will need to map an outdoor route. I don’t think that would have pleased Mr Bloom. He was not a man for the great outdoors
and was quite fastidious in his eating habits. He dined well, though. Nowadays we have a wide
r Leopold Bloom ate with relish the inner organs of beasts and fowls. He liked thick giblet soup, nutty gizzards, a stuffed roast heart, liver slices fried with crustcrumbs, fried hencod’s roes. Most of all, he liked grilled mutton kidneys which gave his palate a fine tang of faintly scented urine.
selection of restaurants and food stores throughout Ireland, which we think of as a modern development and, certainly, it is a great improvement on the situation I remember from 50 years ago. But at some stage there must have been a regression, for Leopold Bloom ate very well and his menu, even by modern standards, was both varied and exotic. He plans a breakfast of ham and eggs for Molly but has no eggs, so his thoughts turn to a mutton kidney, fried with butter and a shake of pepper. Better still, he thinks, a pork kidney, from Dlugacz’s, the Polish butcher, in Dorset Street. For his own lunch, in Davy Byrne’s moral pub, he enjoys a Gorgonzola cheese sandwich and a glass of fine Burgundy. He reflects that he might also “like a few olives too if they
had them. Italian I prefer. Good glass of burgundy (and a) nice salad, cool as a cucumber, Tom Kernan can dress. Pure olive oil. Milly served me that cutlet with a sprig of parsley. Take one Spanish onion. God made food, the devil the cooks. Devilled crab.” Bloom is an advertising canvasser, who is paid a commission for placing ads in newspapers. He maintains a middleclass lifestyle on a low income , yet he can afford to drink Burgundy, enjoys devilled crab, and is fussy about his choice of olives. Since no-one seems to find his eating habits extraordinary, we must assume they were normal enough for Dublin, early in the last century. “Mr Bloom ate his strips of sandwich, fresh clean bread, with relish of disgust, pungent mustard, the feety savour of green cheese. Sips of
his wine soothed his palate. Not logwood that. Tastes fuller this weather with the chill off. “ Later, in the Ormond Hotel, Bloom enjoys slices of liver with mashed potatoes in gravy . Gerty MacDowell, who excites Bloom with a flash of her knickers, believes the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. If Bloom were her husband, she would treat him to “griddle cakes done to a golden brown hue and Queen Ann’s pudding of delightful creaminess”. Molly worries about her husband ordering “eggs and tea, Findon haddy and hot buttered toast”. Findon haddy is a kipper from Scotland. Molly had bought some “lovely fresh plaice” that day and thinks she’ll get a bit more fish tomorrow along with some blancmange and black currant jam but not “those 2lb
pots of mixed plum and apple.” The range of the food on offer is impressive. Molly hates eels and thinks she might go for cod. She is sick of “loin chops and leg beef and rib steak and scrag of mutton and calfs pluck” and is planning to join her lover on a picnic where they will have “cold veal and ham mixed sandwiches”. She fantasises about a course of sardines and bream. She has a fondness for oysters washed down with stout and likes the “fine salty taste of port and potted meat”. Having thought about food for much of the day, Bloom ends it in bed with his wife, admiring her breasts, like pears, and the “plump mellow yellow smellow melons of her rump”. Ah yes, there’s eating and drinking in Bloomsday. And maybe next year we’ll get to do it all indoors again.

Keeping an Eye on the Ladies!
7-spot ladybirds (Photo Justin Ivory) Relax, there’s nothing sleazy going on here, I’m referring to ladybirds. Two separate projects are trying to monitor the distribution of ladybirds in Ireland and need the help of all you citizen scientists out there. First up is the Ladybird Atlas 2025 project being run by the brilliant folks at the National Biodiversity Data Centre (NBDC). The project has two main aims, first, to increase the amount of observation of ladybirds in order to produce more comprehensive distribution maps for all 19 species of ladybird. And second, to improve knowledge of habitat preferences of the different species of ladybird. Records can be inputted on their website and via their Biodiversity app. The second project, the Irish Ladybird Survey is being run in conjunction with UCC, IWT, Fota Wildlife Park, National Museum of Ireland and Biology. ie. It also aims to track the distribution of ladybirds across Ireland, in particular, the invasive Harlequin ladybird. The Harlequin is an Asian species of ladybird and was first recorded in Ireland in 2010. It is spreading rapidly and is a real threat to our native ladybird species as it preys on their larvae and out competes them in terms of diet and reproduction. Our native ladybird species mate once a year, whereas Harlequins, can breed 3 times in a year. Your ladybird records can be submitted via the Biology. ie website or the specially designed android app Irish Ladybird Survey. Ladybirds are beetles belonging to the insect family Coccinellidae. There have been 19 species of what are usually referred to as Ladybirds recorded in Ireland. Adult ladybirds hibernate through the winter and emerge in March and April. During May the males and females mate. Females lay their eggs in June and July. These eggs hatch as larva. The larva feed up on aphids and other prey and eventually form pupae. During August the new adults emerge from the pupae.

The blair witch project Netflix now
AUTHORS Derek Molyneux and Darren Kelly have created vivid accounts of violence that parts of this book are not for the faint-hearted, with graphic depictions to convey the brutal ferocity of these tumultuous times. The book draws the reader into the final frenetic months of Dublin’s War of Independence. The events of Bloody Sunday are written in uncompromising, unflinching, and unprecedented detail. The authors retrace the footsteps of IRA assassination units through the streets of Dublin, describing in gory detail the horrors inflicted on the homes they invaded. You have been warned.
TRACKS & Trails is back for a 9th series and is bursting with beautiful hikes, walks and cycles on newly developed and lesser travelled routes on the island of Ireland. In this new series the presenters are challenged to cover a lot of ground on foot or by bike and in some cases scale some steep yet very rewarding trails on hills and mountains, meandering peaceful paths getting away from it all. This week, Pól O Conghaile explores Co Wexford, beginning in Ferrycarrig and tracing a route that is full of stories spanning more than 10,000 years of Ireland’s history.
WHEN this first came out back in 1999, it was a revolutionary movie which spawned myriad projects based on ‘found footage’. But it’s still hard to beat the original which is now available on Netflix. It’s October 21, 1994, Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael Williams hike into Maryland’s Black Hills Forest to shoot a documentary film on a local legend, The Blair Witch. They were never heard from again. One year later, their footage was found. The Blair Witch Project is their legacy. Try showing this to your kids who weren’t even born when it first came out and see if they get scared. Nah.

Also remembered his wife Jean who passed away on 3rd January 2015. Masses offered. No longer in our lives to share, But in our hearts you are always there. -Always loved and missed by your daughter Sharon No special day is needed, For us to think of you, For you are always in our thoughts, No matter what we do. -Sadly missed by your brothers, sisters, brothers in law, sisters in law, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
17th Anniversary SAM BIBLE
Birthday Remembrance of Alice Colbert, late of Rice Park. Sweet is your memory, Dear is your name, Deep in our hearts you will always remain, It does not take a special day, For us to think of you, Each mass we hear, Each prayer we say, Is offered up to you. - From sons Pat, Fran and Martin, daugter Grace and families.
27th Anniversary & Birthday Remembrance MADGE COADY
In loving memory of dear Sam, Late of 14 St Laurence Terrace who died on the 22nd April 2004. Not Today But Everyday, In Silence, We remember. -Never Forgotten From your Cousin Joan & Family
29th Anniversary TOMMY MOORE
In loving memory of Tommy Moore, late of 83 Cannon St. whose 29th anniversary occured on the 2nd June. God called your name so softly Dad, And only you could hear, No one heard the footsteps, Of he angels drawing near. It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God called you homes - Always remembered and loved by Frances, Noel, Tony and the extended Moore family.
In loving memory of Madge Coady late of late of 14 ÁrdNa- Gréine, Waterford who died 19th of June, 1994 and whose birthday occurs on the 14th of June. RIP. We think of you in silence And often speak your name, All we have are memories And a picture in a frame, You had a smile for everyone, You had a heart of gold, You left the dearest memories This world could ever hold. We lost a mother with a heart of gold, How much we miss her can never be told, She shared our troubles and helped us along, If we follow her footsteps we will never go wrong. Softly the leaves of memories fall, Gently we stoop and gather them all, Unseen, unheard, yet always near, Still loved, still missed, still very dear, Although we smile and make no fuss, No one misses you more than us, Quietly today your memory we treasure, Loving you always, forgetting you never. - Too dearly loved to be forgotten, from your sons and daughters, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and all your family and friends.
In loving memory of Teresa O’Donohue late of Larchville, and Killure Bridge, whose anniversary occurs on 24th June. When God sends his angels, down from above, To bring home to Heaven the Mother you Love. It’s hard to have faith when your hearts full of pain. And you wonder what’s the point, When your Worlds not the same. On my darkest day Mam, I called to you for a sign. You said look out the window. There, four siblings of mine. Together as always. Close by through the tears. We’ve laughed and we’ve cried Our way through this first year. You said there’s Love always Love, What a bless-ed thing. You said God reunites, Till then Mam, Hear us sing... Have I told you lately that I love you... - Loved and missed always Mam, from Linda Ger Joanna John Paul & Tracey We knew little that morning, That God would call your name. In life we loved you dearly; In death we do the same, It broke our hearts to lose you, But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God called you home. You left us beautiful memories, Your love is still our guide. And though we cannot see you, You are always at our side, Our family chain is broken, And nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, The chain will link again. -Always remembered, Always loved Always missed Mam, You daughter Linda Paul Sarah Ben and James The World may never notice, If a snow drop doesn’t bloom, Or even pause to wonder, If the petals fall too soon. But every life that ever forms, Or even comes to be, Touches the world in some small way, For all eternity. - Loved and missed Mam Love by your son Ger Emily Autumn and Lily. We were we, Before we became you and I. We heard the rhythm of your heart From the inside. At birth the cord was snipped Placed on your chest. You took your five babies, Home to nest. We were born rich, In love and laughter. We have the family bond It’s all that really matters. All along the way, There were trials and tribulations. You sang your heart out. At every celebration. For you there was nothing. We wouldn’t do. You are the rhythm of our hearts And we love you. We drove a thousand miles, Just to be together. You never once complained. You battled on and braved the weather. The mortal cord now snipped, The bond remains unbroken. In heaven hear our hearts. If any words were left unspoken. As God whispered low your name Angels sang Amazing Grace.
Our Gerry took your hand Your Mother kissed your face. Your Father held you tight. Lucy and Laurence danced Surrounded by pure love now In another land Tears they fall for you, Like rivers from our eyes. You’re the Phoenix from the ashes. Fly free now in blue skies. Grief a gift from love. And parting such sweet sorrow. I miss you much today Mam. I’ll miss you more tomorrow. - Always Loved and missed Your daughter Joanna Damien & Nicole What my hearts wants to say. My Mother was my everything, And I wanted her stay. With tear stains on my cheek., Words so hard to speak. Of the loss I feel so deep Gods gift, not mine to keep. No one can take your place Mam. For you were surely, like no other. Place yours arms around her Lord. And tell her that I love her. - Loved and missed every day, Love your son John Paul The angels gathered near your side, So very close to you, For they knew of the suffering, That you were going true. I thought about so many things, As I held tightly to your hand, Oh how I wished that you were strong, And happy once again. But your eyes were looking homeward, To that place beyond the sky, Where Jesus held his outstretched arms, It was time to say goodbye. I struggled with my selfish thoughts, For I wanted you to stay. So we could walk and talk again, Like we did, Just yesterday. But Jesus knew the answer, And I knew you loved him so, So I gave to you life’s greatest gift, The gift of letting go. - Always loved and missed by your daughter Tracey & Eoin Don’t think of her as gone away, Her journey has just begun. Life holds many facets, The Earth is only one. Just think of her as resting, From the sorrows and the tears, In a place of warmth and comfort, Where there are no days and years. Think how she must be wishing, That we could know today, How nothing but our sadness, Can really pass away. And think of her as living, In the hearts of Those she touched. For nothing loved, Is ever lost, And she was loved So much. - Missed by your grandkids Patrick Letisha & Tianna I wish you sweet sleep, my sister dear. Although there’s so much that you’ve left bare, I hate that you had to endure such pain. On my mind, your saddened eyes have left a stain. I want to know what crossed your mind. Unspoken words you’ve left behind. Undone things we’ll never do. No sharing thoughts you never knew. A peace has fallen upon your head, A taste of sorrow we have been fed. It really is like a hole in our lives, One swiftly dug but carved out by knives. But I have hope that those sleeping will rise. The Bible says that God will open their eyes. No suffering, sickness, yes not even pain. Those who did good, eternal life they’ll gain. So...sleep on, my dear sister; sleep tight, For now with you the sky is night. But after night will come daybreak.
Therefore, I will wait hoping to see you awake.

God looked around his garden, And found an empty place, He then looked down upon this earth, And saw your tired place, He put his arms around you, And lifted you to rest, God’s Garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best, He knew that you were suffering, He knew you were in pain, He knew that you would never get well on earth again, He saw that the road was getting rough, And the hills are hard to climb, For nothing loved is ever lost, And she was loved so much. - We will always love you. Lisa-Maria, Laurent, Alexandra and Keegan Missing You We’re missing you a little more Each time we hear your name, We’ve cried so many tears Yet our heart’s broken just the same. We miss our times together Things in common we could share, But nothing fills the emptiness Now you’re no longer there. o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore of you to obtain for me my request....(Pause) The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so you are the saint of miracles. O gentle and loving St Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, intercede for me and whisper my prayer into the ear of the sweet Infant Jesus who loved to linger in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will be yours.
