€27m to make city dream come true THE transformation of Waterford city has taken a huge step forward with the announcement that more than €27m funding has been approved by the Government. The money will be invested in projects across the wider Viking Triangle and Cultural Quarter areas. There are plans for a plaza to the rear of Parade Quay, linking it with Greyfriars, and for a linear park along Spring Garden Alley. Senator John Cummins, a long time champion of the project, hailed the news as “transformative”. Mayor Damien Geoghegan said the develoopments would bring back people to live, work and socialise in the city. The allocation of €27.66m is the second tranche of funding for Waterford from the Urban Regeneration Development Fund (URDF). It follows an allocation of €96m for the North Quays development which will link both sides of the city with a new bridge and transport hub. Cllr Geoghegan said the

council could now “realise the creative and ambitious designs across 20 or more locations in the Cultural Quarter and Viking Triangle”. Senator Cummins said it was a vote of confidence in the city by the Government. “This is a really ambitious regeneration project for Waterford city centre and I would like to commend the team at Waterford City and County Council for their vision and for their collaborative work with groups like the Cultural Quarter Steering Committee,” he said. The council expects to spend nearly €12 million on seven projects in the wider Viking Triangle area including the creation of a new Friary Precinct. “There has been enormous investment in the Viking Triangle area over the past decade and it has transformed before our very eyes,” said Senator Cummins. “Bailey’s New Street with the wonderful backdrop of Greyfriars and the Viking >>Turn to page 5

Not only will it provide fantastic city centre living and allow businesses to open on to the newly created Friary Square, it will complete the area brilliantly.” The funding announcement

was widely welcomed. Green Party TD Marc Ó Cathasaigh said it was “a very significant investment in our city” But People Before Profit said it was “late in coming “. “Cork and Limerick are well out of the traps on this type of investment,” said PBP representative Úna Dunphy. in a statement. “We in PBP Waterford have been pushing for linear parks, car

reduction, park and ride, repurposing of vacant builds and embracing our heritage in any city development for many years, while the political establishment were still talking about unsustainable retail.” Our illustration shows one aspect of the plan, the new Gateway Plaza and linear park.

HOUSE prices are defying Covid predictions and rising everywhere with the South East experiencing some the sharpest increases. The annual rate of growth recorded at the start of the year was the fastest in 20 months, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office. Prices in Dublin, which had been declining, rose by 1.1 per cent year on year while prices outside Dublin rose by 4 per cent. In the South East, including Waterford, the increase was 5.3%. At the outset of the pandemic, many had predicted property values would decline but a number of factors, including increased savings and remote working, have driven them forward again. Shortage of supply also appears to be a factor pushing up prices. The latest Residential Property Price index suggests the number of property transactions in January fell by 30 per cent to 3,691 compared with the previous month. Commenting on the figures, the Institute of Professional Auctioneers & Valuers, said auctioneers throughout the country are seeing extremely

strong demand for homes that they are unable to satisfy because of a lack of supply. Pat Davitt, IPAV Chief Executive said builders must get back, safely, to building more homes. “It is in nobody’s interest that prices would continue to rise at such a level,” he said. The growing demand for residential development sites in regional cities was highlighted by the recent sale of a 28.32 acre (11.46 hectare) holding on the outskirts of Waterford city. Having been offered to the market last October for €3.25 million, the site off the Williamstown Road was sold for €4.025 million after competitive bidding. The price paid represents a premium of 24 per cent on the guide price set by joint selling agents Cushman & Wakefield and Sherry Fitzgerald John Rohan. Commenting on the transaction, Paul Nalty of Cushman & Wakefield told the Irish Times: “This deal shows the confidence of developers and investors in Waterford city’s future potential for expansion over the coming years. It also reflects a particular trend we are seeing of premiums being achieved on regional assets for residential development.”

Five schools assist with alcohol study CHILDREN as young as those in sixth class should be introduced to information about the impact of alcohol, says the chief executive of Drinkaware. Sheena Horgan was commenting after the charity released a report into its junior cycle programme aimed at reducing alcohol use among younger teenagers. More than 13,000 students, including pupils from five secondary schools across County Waterford, took part in the study. The Waterford schools taking part were Newtown School, De La Salle College, Ard Scoil na Deise, Ursuline College and St Augustine’s College. Mary Kelleher, a teacher at

Newtown School in Waterford city, said the study had revealed a noticeable shift in students’ attitudes to alcohol, especially when it comes to understanding the range of harm that drinking can cause. “Programmes like Drinkaware’s JC AEP play a huge role in helping teachers engage with young people to give them the information, and the personal and social skills they need to make better decisions long-term,” she said. “Teachers are a major touchpoint in teenagers’ lives, but we are only one. It is important that alcohol education comes from all angles – from the home, from peers, and from the wider community.”

Arts quarter hub is ‘target of criminals’ BUILDINGS intended for a role in Waterford’s emerging cultural quarter have been broken into several times in recent weeks. The three connected properties that make up Thomas House on Thomas Street were acquired by the City and County council in 2019. The council planned to restore several apartments on the site for accommodation while upgrading other floors to act as a new Artistic Hub for the cultural quarter. The Rogue Gallery and Waterford Walls are already listed for tenancy. During lockdown the properties have been repeatedly broken into and damaged. Councillor Eamon Quinlan said it was like “a game of cat

and mouse” between the Garda, the council’s maintenance team and the intruders. The damage is repaired, the properties secured, then they are broken into again. “They have no qualms about smashing their way in through back windows and doors,” he said. “I believe they are using it as an out of public view area to deal and consume drugs.” The Fianna Fáil councillor blamed “a criminal element”. “This is the problem when a criminal element makes themselves at home in your community,” he said. “They begin casting their eyes around at other properties they think are isolated.” He called on the council to “put a run” on these individuals and said it would be speeding up renovation of the premises. “I know that the

best way to cut this carry on dead is to animate the property with actual residents,” he said. Cllr Quinlan is also pressing for redevelopment of the site of Flynn’s bar which he says has become “a hub of anti social behaviour and drug use” thast is “ dragging down the entire Ferrybank area”. The site has been in council ownership for several years and there were plans to build apartments there. Cllr Quinlan said the site had been the scene of drug use, illegal boxing matches and general anti-social behaviour. “I am disgusted at how the council has allowed this situation get out of hand,.” he said. “ It is heartbreaking to see a property in a residential area, that was once a bedrock of the community go to such rag and ruin.”

A walk on the wall side WATERFORD Walls has launched a campaign encouraging everyone to go out walking within their 5k limit. They will enter you into a draw for some of their festival merchandise, and the winner will be announced at the end of this month. Hotels face huge slump in bookings BOOKINGS at Waterford hotels have collapsed since the latest Covid restrictions were announced last month. Cancellations have wiped out any new business, according to the Irish Hotels Federatiom. Its latest industry survey estimates room occupancy for Waterford city hotels and guesthouses at 16% for July falling to 11% for September. The rest of the county is doing better, but still faring badly, with predicted occupancy rates of 39% for July falling to 24% for September. Hotels and guesthouses nationally are reporting booking levels of just 22% for July and 20% for August. Aidan Quirke, Waterford representative of the South East branch of the Irish Hotels Federation, thought that booking levels would improve with late interest from the domestic market. “However, in the meantime, businesses have to plan,” he said. The federation

has urged the Government to provide a significant increase in sector-specific supports for tourism businesses Mr Quirke said: “The Government may not be able to provide assurances as to when society will reopen, but they can give much needed certainty and reassurance around business and employee supports. With Waterford hotels facing a prolonged period of closure and related cash burn, this piecemeal approach is hugely frustrating and detrimental for hotels and their teams who, along with the rest of the tourism and hospitality sector, have been disproportionately impacted by Covid restrictions. “Specifically, we are seeking increases in payments under the Covid Restrictions Supports Scheme (CRSS) with a doubling of payment amounts irrespective of the level of Covid restrictions as well as removal of the current €5,000 weekly cap. “

Alexanders the Great!

Alexanders flower heads (Photo Justin Ivory) One of the smells that defines late winter and early spring for me is the pungent, sweet, celery-like smell of Alexanders (Smyrnium olusatrum). This plant is significantly more substantial in size and structure than the diminutive stature of our other earlyspring flowers, growing up to 120cm high. Being far from pretty or eye-catching, I guess my love for this plant stems from the fact it is a brilliant early source of food for emerging pollinators. Alexanders have distinctive dark green, glossy, and toothed trifoliate leaves (a leaf divided into three leaflets). The greeny-yellow flower heads which appear from February to June, are parasol shaped and consist of 8-12 rays containing many tightly packed tiny flowers. Given the umbrella shape formed by the merging flower bearing rays, it is no surprise to find that this plant belongs to that group of plants known as umbellifers. Umbellifers, or Apiaceae, is a family of aromatic flowering plants which contains celery, carrot, parsley, hogweed, and fennel, among others. Apiaceae comes from apium, the Latin word for celery. In late summer and autumn, the flowers give way to globular black fruits. This plant which originates from the Mediterranean, has strong associations with Alexander the Great and the city of Alexandria. Every part of the plant, also known as horse parsley, is edible. The young flowers heads were pickled like a kind of miniature cauliflower, the spring shoots used like celery, leaves for salads and the thick taproot blanched and used as a winter vegetable. The plant also has many medicinal qualities. Roman soldiers brought it to the Britain, as they would carry it with them on long journeys as a pot herb, as they could eat the leaves, stems, roots, and buds. It was monks who brought it further west to Ireland and it is often found by the ruins of monasteries, abbeys, and castles.

Biggie: I Got a Story to Tell Netflix out now

THE Ishiguro of Never Let Me Go (very hard for him to shake that off despite a multitude of bestsellers before and since) is back with a sci-fi-adjacent tale of an artificial friend named Klara, who is sent to live with a family and be a companion to a preteen girl. Klara narrates the world she encounters through her own very specific lens — something like a combination of the innocence of a toddler and the heightened intelligence and sensitivity of a mature adult. And through the eyes of this unforgettable narrator, the fundamental questions of what it means to be human are asked.

IF you are pining for the parade for the second year running, then at least be comforted by the fact that the St Patrick’s Festival and all the ancillary events can be viewed from the comfort of your own couch this year. More than 100 events will be broadcast globally over six days and nights on St Patrick’s Festival TV (SPF TV), a dedicated online TV channel at stpatricksfestival.ie and simultaneously streaming on rte.ie/culture. Oireachtas TV will broadcast most of St. Patrick’s Festival’s events to over 1.1 million homes across Ireland from March 12th – 17th inclusive.

CHRISTOPHER Wallace, better known by his rap name The Notorious B.I.G. or Biggie Smalls, was a Brooklyn born rapper considered one of the greatest rappers of all time, due to his distinctive laidback delivery and often pretty grim and gritty content. In 1996, Biggie was entangled in the East Coast-West Coast hip hop feud. Following the death of rapper Tupac Shakur in September 1996, Biggie was accused of being involved and was murdered on March 9, 1997, in a drive-by shooting in LA at just 24. Directed by Emmett Malloy, this documentary tells the story of the rise and tragic fall of the Notorious BIG and is a tough but cracking view.

speaking of which www.dublincityartsoffice.ie

MOST good ole Southern rock fans have still to find it in their hearts to forgive the Kings of Leon for ‘Sex on Fire’ — particularly since it came after two of the finest albums in recent memory. And whether this new release will help atone time will tell. They’ve ditched the hair and the facial fluff and are going for a mature look and sound in what Caleb Followill calls a different band. What we get is a more subtle eighth album. ‘Oh, we’re still the greatest/The greatest/The greatest/And you/ Your sex is on fire.’ Still unforgivable.

I sometimes think I see you, As I walk along the street, Sometimes I hear you call me, As I’m drifting off to sleep, Always I want to tell you, Of all the things I’ve done, Or as I listen to the words of a song that you have sung, Often I feel so sad that the tears start to flow, It’s then I really miss you Martin, More than anyone could know, Sometimes I feel so lonely, And shed some silent tears, I seem to hear you whisper, Don’t worry, I am here, I tell you that I miss you, With every passing day, Again I hear you whisper, I am never far away - Happy Birthday Martin, love and miss you always, your soulmate Pat.

Say cheese ... and add red wine if you want to smile

A

little of what you fancy does you good, said the old music hall song. Wise advice. And don’t worry if your fancy doesn’t stretch to vegan diets or running marathons in your back garden. Whatever your weakness it can be turned to a strength at the click of a mouse. Just Google your vice and you will find a survey that makes a virtue of it. Many of them have been conducted by universities who need to find some way of spending the public’s money, other than just wasting it on educating partying students. The latest and greatest is from Iowa State University where researchers have found that regular consumption of cheese and red wine has a positive impact on the brain. Well, I tell you, just reading the headline had a positive im-

Michael Wolsey

pact one me, so it must be true. Reading on, I discover that this red wine and cheese combo not only sharpens the brain, it helps guard against “age-related cognitive problems” and is “good for helping us cope with our current Covid-19 pandemic”. Now I’m very fond of red wine and cheese and I’ve never caught Covid-19, so that’s pretty conclusive evidence in favour of the survey, is it not?

And what about age-related cognitive problems? Well, I can’t remember ever suffering from those, so there’s more proof, if more is needed. According to Dr Auriel Willette, assistant professor in Food Science and Human Nutrition at the university, “responsibly eating cheese and drinking red wine daily” also helps us deal with “an increasingly complex world that never seems to slow down”. Slow down, drink wine, eat cheese. It’s the best medical advice I’ve heard since bluesman John Lee Hooker told us “my doctor put me on/ milk, cream and alcohol”. In fact it’s even better. I’m not that fond of milk and cream. Dr Willette has one little nagging doubt about her survey. She fears cheese and red wine could just be “what well-off people eat and drink” and the rich tend to be healthier than the poor.

I don’t know about that. If people would stop squandering money on fruit and vegetables they could easily afford a diet of Camembert and Châteauneufdu-Pape that would do their memory a power of good. Nobody in Glasgow ever eats fruit or vegetables and there’s people there who say they can remember when Scotland won the World Cup. Anyway, there’s a wealth of other wonderful surveys to back up the Iowa research. Boffins at University College London found that drinking up to four and a half bottles of wine a week reduces the likelihood of developing dementia. Four and a half bottles? Good heavens, there are some weeks I don’t reach the quota. I’ll have to up my game. Scientists at Israel’s Ben-Gurion University found that red wine increases levels of good cholesterol and reduces bad cholesterol. And when they ran

a test on people who drank either wine or water before going to bed they found that the wine drinkers slept better. And don’t worry if you dislike red wine. No need to change your drinking habits, just try another survey. Doctors at America’s worldfamous Mayo Clinic have found that white wine or beer might be just as beneficial as the red stuff. “There’s still no clear evidence that red wine is better than other forms of alcohol when it comes to possible heart-healthy benefits,” they concluded. However, the red one may help you fight the flab. Seems unlikely, I know. But who am I to argue with Washington State University. Researchers there found that an ingredient in red wine, called resveratrol, could help turn flab into calorie-burning brown fat. That means you could maybe spend less time running around

the place and more time in bed. So you’ll be glad to know that research from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln found that red wine could be the answer to bed bugs. Seems the bugs prefer blood that isn’t tainted by alcohol. What bugs me is their preference for white over red, but what else could you expect from a nasty little insect? Scientists at Washington University in St Louis, Missouri, found that women who drink red wine in moderation are more fertile than those who do not. And researchers at the University of Buffalo, in New York state, topped them all with the overriding conclusion that red wine helps us live longer and healthier lives . A friend tells me she found some research showing university surveys are not worth the papers they are written on. I advised her to forget about it and have another glass of wine. And a nice slice of Cashel Blue.
