FG crisis as Coffey throws in the towel FINE Gael’s General election plans have been thrown into confusion by the shock announcement that Senator Paudie Coffey is quitting politics. The former junior minister was one of the party’s chosen candidates and widely tipped to regain the seat he lost at the last election. The senator has not explained what prompted his bombshell announcement. In a statement to local media he simply said he had “notified the Taoiseach and leader of Fine Gael Leo Varadkar” and the party’s General Secretary Tom Curran. He said that “in recent weeks” he had reflected on his position and decided “to leave public life when the current 25th Seanad term ends”. Mr Varadkar paid tribute to Senator Coffey. “I’m very sorry to hear about his decision but I can understand his wish to spend more time with his wife and family and pursue other opportunities,” he said. “He has

been a fantastic representative for Waterford and we will miss him in the party.” Senator Coffey was selected by local Fine Gael members over two years ago to stand in the General Election. His decision leaves former city mayor John Cummins and former county council chairman Damien Geoghegan on the ticket. There was never any possibility of Fine Gael taking three seats. Senator Coffey’s withdrawal is seen as boosting the chances of Mr Geoghegan since both he and Mr Coffey draw a lot of support from outside the city area, where Cllr Cummins’s strength lies. The decision is an electoral crisis for Fine Gael since the party’s sitting TD, John Deasy, is also retiring. Mr Coffey was elected to the Dáil in 2011 alongside Mr Deasy. >> Turn to Page 4

It’s the Christmas chorus
WATERFORD is in fine voice this Christmas. The Male Voice Choir will sing Christmas carols in the showrooms of Murphy Larkin on the Riverstown Industrial Estate, Tramore, at 4.30 on December 20. There will be coffee, mulled wine, festive bites and a hamper to be raffled. The event is in aid of Waterford Hospice.
BIG SING: The Big Sing in the Sacred Heart Church proved a huge success with over €5,500 raised for two local charities. Many of Waterford’s choirs, including the children from St Ursula’s Primary School and Scoil Lorcain, participated in the event where the audience was challenged to sing along to anything they knew.
LIBRARY: Over 100 library users of all ages gathered in Waterford City and County Council’s Central Library to celebrate their local library and its place at the heart of their community. Carols were performed by the Bealtaine Choir. PICTURE: The Intonations Choir made a special appearance at Garter Lane for Christmas Songs. Photo: Patrick Browne
FG crisis as Coffey throws in the towel
From front page The Portlaw politician said: he looked forward to to “focusing on the next chapter of my life and spending more time with my wife and three children.” “I am also excited about new opportunities that may present themselves in the time ahead,” he said. The shock news comes in a traumatic week for politics in Waterford. The City and County Council narrowly avoided suspension when it passed a budget approving service cuts and a 2.5% rise in commercial rates to plug a €1.3m hole caused by a change in the way Irish Water pays rates on its properties. Sinn Féin refused to back the measures and broke ranks with Labour, the Greens and independents who made up the Progressive Alliance which controlled the council. It looked likely that the Government would suspend the council and impose a budget but Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil councillors stepped in and helped get the deal over the line.

No need for B&Bs as homeless figure drops
THERE has been a welcome drop in the number of people in homeless accommodation in Waterford. The number has fallen by more than 40% in the year to November - down from 126
to 72 - and the local authority has now been able to stop using B&Bs and hotels to house homeless people. The figure was provided by Waterford Council to Cllr John Cummins.
The Fine Gael election candidate welcomed the development. “This positive reduction in figures is as a result of increased supports to homeless clients to help them exit emergency accommodation,” he said. “To emphasise the progress that has been made in the past 12 months, Waterford Council has now ceased the use of B&Bs/ hotels as a means of emergency accommodation and is working in partnership with homeless service providers in providing alternative temporary supported accommodation in standard housing. “While this is news that must be welcomed, it doesn’t lessen my resolve to ensure that these figures are further reduced in the months ahead.” In the 11 months to the end of October, 350 individuals and families were allocated properties. In the Metropolitan district 245 council tenancies were allocated, 73 were allocated in the Dungarvan/ Lismore district. Eighteen were allocated n the Comeragh district and 14 were allocated by voluntary bodies across the city and county.
Inspiration is the main course
INSPIRATION was on the menu at Waterford Chamber’s lunch in Tramore. Karen Burns, General Manager at SunLife Financial, entertained and inspired the Inspiring Women in Business lunch at One the Waterfront . The event, sponsored by Waterford Local Enterprise Office, saw more than 100 businesswomen enjoy a mulled cider reception and a
sumptuous meal. Taking to the podium after the meal, Karen Burns spoke on her path to success, the challenges of work/life balance - and the importance of wearing the right shoes. The festive afternoon concluded Waterford Chamber’s calendar of events for 2019, after what Deputy President Danette Connolly described as “one of the
busiest and most successful yet”. Network Ireland Waterford members, meanwhile, enjoyed their annual Christmas outing - skating at Winterval and pizza at The Parlour Vintage Tea Rooms. Parents ‘heart broken’ by lack of acid attack action THE parents of teenage acid attack victims have reacted with shock and anger to the revelation that two of their alleged attackers will not face charges. Gardaí telephoned families with the decision of the Director of Public Prosecution, saying the two will receive juvenile cautions. Four teenagers – one minor, two aged 18 and one aged 19 – were arrested after the attack with drain cleaning fluid at Earlscourt Housing Estate, in Waterford, on April 28. Martin Killilea is the father of Oisin Killilea Daly (19) who was one of the three victims and suffered bad burns across his back. Mr Killilea said the family had decided to speak out for the first time because they were so angry about the DPP’s decision. “I’ve spent eight-and-a-half months telling everybody to be calm because justice will be done,” he said. “I didn’t think there would be a need to come forward. Oisin
has got really bad scarring over his back – it was sheer luck it wasn’t his face.” Tega Agberhiere (17) was another of the victims of the attack. He suffered horrific injuries to his face, eyesight and other parts of his body. Tega plays for Waterford FC’s under-17 side and has represented Ireland at underage level. His mother Christie Agberhiere, said her heart had been broken by the decision not to prosecute her son’s attackers. She said gardaí explained that, due to the alleged perpetrators being underage, and because they had not come to Garda attention before the incident, the two will receive juvenile cautions. Gardaí also told her, she said, that the two boys would need to avoid coming to Garda attention over the coming year. “My heart is broken,” she said. “I am highly highly disappointed and I am angry. It’s unbelievable.”

68 in 2028. The increase in the retirement age is an attempt by the government to deal with the huge burden retirement costs will place on Ireland in the coming years. In the last Budget, the promised State Pension increase was not given. It is expected that following the next General Election, the Government, of whatever hue, will increase the State Pension Age further - to 69 in 2035 and to 70 in 2042. The Government talks of having a policy to encourage people to make greater personal provision. Auto enrolment, which most people agree is a good proposal, is already two or more years delayed and we do not expect it to see the light of day for perhaps 5 more years. The Pensions Authority is seeking changes to pension vehicles in order to make their oversight job easier, even if their actions forces pension scheme members into unsuitable products.

We all welcome the fact that people are living longer and enjoying a more active retirement. However, our quality of life will be determined by the amount of money we have to spend. Open all hours? Not this year, says retailer
RETAIL holidays have been shrinking and some shops now open even on Christmas Day. But JYSK, the Danish interiors chain that recently opened in Waterford, is bucking the trend. It will close its stores nationwide on Monday, 23 December, at 6pm, and reopen at 10am on Friday, 27 December, giving its retail staff three full days off . “We’re aware that our staff are under enormous pressure at this time of year,” said Head of Retail at JYSK Ireland, Roni Tuominen. “This is why we have decided to reward their hard work and dedication by giving them three full days off in a row over Christmas.” Meanwhile, a Waterford tech company is pioneering extended child leave for its employees. Spearline, which also has an office in Cork and braches in India and Romania, will be introducing paid maternity and adoptive leave for 18 weeks , and paternity leave. The company says it is recognising the efforts of its staff.
HAIL SATAN? The question mark in the title of this documentary about the organisation that is called The Satanic Temple is quite important insofar as many of the people who are members are so far beyond in their thinking of the duality of good and evil that it is absurd to bring religion into the equation. While of course there is a definite link to the fallen angel, Lucifer, in the Satanic Temple, what the overwhelming majority of the people involved in the group share in common is their complete disillusionment with the way in which America is slowly sliding into becoming a theocracy and a very Christian one at that. Most of their energy is focused on objecting to the blurring of the lines between Church and State where some States now are openly siding with Christianity. If you go back to the Declaration of Independence they say the only mention of religion in it you will find is that there will be a complete separation of Church and State. The blurring of religion and State began in the 1950’s when America began to identify itself as a Christian country against the Godless Soviet Union. It is only then that terms such as ‘In God We Trust’ were first introduced. An awful lot of Americans know very little about their history or indeed their Constitution other than some vague understanding of what they are supposedly allowed to do. They are not so hot on what they are not allowed to do and on aspect of this is the blurring of the lines between Church and State and wherever this happens the Satanic Temple are there to step in. Often enough it is very tongue in cheek. Everyone knows about the Westboro Baptists and their way of protesting which is highly antagonistic. The Satanic Temple therefore went to the grave of the mother of the founder of the Church and using the Mormon technique of converting people who have already died, turned her into a Satanist and a Lesbian one at that by having gay and lesbian couples kiss over her grave. For good measure the leader of the group plopped his genitals out to rest on her headstone. All of this of course was shared on Facebook. An intriguing look at how America operates and how, at least, one small group is fighting back. THE VAULT. Supposedly a horror movie this film will disturb no one’s night’s sleep as a group of bank robbers get a little bit more than they bargained for. Yet another example of James Franco’s slide into obscurity.

They’re winners all right HARRY de Bromhead was honoured by Tramore Racecourse with an Outstanding Achievement Award during the December meeting. But before receiving his award he wanted to surprise former jockey, Paddy Kiely, who rode Banswara, which was trained by Harry and won the Waterford Crystal steeplechase at Tramore in 1978. Unfortunately Paddy could
not be present,t but John Kiely and Matt Kiely were there and were presented with two of glasses from the original set presented to Harry as trainer of the winner of the Waterford Crystal Steeplechase in 1978 . Harry de Bromhead has been involved in racing for nearly 70 years. His first winner was Meadowlark which he both rode and trained to win in Galway in 1961. Harry collected the
horse, owned by his aunt, and brought it by train to Waterford, then rode it home as there were no horse boxes in those days. Harry’s race weight for Meadowlark was 10st 2lbs and he went on a special diet and lost 17lbs in ten days. Harry has a great love of Tramore racecourse having multiple winners there. Easy on the pocket
W
ay back in 2008, I published a compilation of 101 of my best received weekly articles from the Waterford Today. Now, some 11 years and over 500 articles later, I am finally in the process of producing a follow up! I had hoped to have the new book ready in time for Christmas, but for a variety of reasons, it won’t now be ready till early 2020. Watch this space! Anyway, as I was researching the new book, I came across this article from 10 years ago – and I liked it so much, I thought it was worth repeating! So here are some unusual and easy on the pocket ideas for Christmas: 1. Make some recipe cards: when I got married, my sisterin-law gave me a box full of delicious recipes. I still use the box, so get writing (if you’re feeling lazy you could copy recipes from the internet). 2. Liberate those digital
breda gardner Natural Healing photos: why not print off a few digital photos and give them as presents: make up a personalised album, or buy some frames from the pound shop and make up a collage. 3. Donate a “You-Voucher”: give a voucher of your time – be it for babysitting, gardening, DIY, painting or tidying up: always welcome! 4. Make a Christmas decoration: buy some Oasis from your local florist, and make a decoration with a candle, holly and other foliage – simple, and it looks great! 5. Books, Books, Books! Pay a visit to your local discount book centre: they always have
some real bargains, and you can usually find something just right for the person you’re buying for! 6. Teach someone a skill: if there’s something you’re good at - like knitting, cooking, photography, computing, guitar playing or sewing - why not offer to teach someone that skill? 7. Get cooking! There’s nothing nicer than getting something homemade to eat: cakes, jams, scones, chutneys etc. So get cooking! 8. Frame it: you can buy inexpensive but nice looking frames from the local pound store. What you put in it is up to you: a collage of photos, something you drew, an inspiring quotation or poem (use nice paper and calligraphy), some arty postcards – use your imagination! 9. Be crafty! Borrow a craft book from your local library, and make your own personalised gifts. 10. Theme it: think of a person’s passion, and buy them a range of small gifts based
on that theme: for example, if they are always glued to the computer, buy them a new mouse mat, USB light, paperclip holder, note clip, coaster etc etc! 11. Get online: there are some really fantastic ideas online for cheap Christmas presents: go and see what you can find. I really liked the following ideas: a website which changes a photo into a cartoon, which you can then print and frame, or giving someone your own homemade “experience” day eg take them around the historic sites in Waterford, or to your five favourite beaches in Wexford and so on. 12. Support your local craft fair: they have many beautiful hand-made gifts at reasonable prices. And failing that, I still have a very limited number of my original book “Words of Wisdom for your Health & Happiness” at €15.00 available via my website (P&P free!). You can also order health consultation vouchers from my website www.bredagardner. com or by calling 056 7724429.
Greedy lenders now ‘reducing people to tears’ A COUNCILLOR says men and women have been “reduced to tears” while telling him about their dealings with financial institutions. Councillor Eddie Mulligan says some institutions are “morally bankrupt” and apply“relentless pressure to families and individuals who are already living on the edge”. The Fianna Fáil election candidate for Waterford says he has been “overwhelmed” with representations from constituents who have had extraordinary negative interactions with financial and corporate institutions this December. “It’s obvious that with pressure on in the corporate financial world to attain year-end targets, for fat cat bonuses no doubt, the heart of Christmas is not being extended in empathy to their customers,” Cllr Mulligan said. “In the cases I have assisted in, the majority have arrears repayments that they can afford, already in place” He said: “I’m listening to
people telling me that they are engaging with the institutions, paying the maximum that they can afford, yet the corporate world is treating them with contempt, looking for increased payments above what these vulnerable citizens have budgeted for, or have told them they can afford.” Cllr Mulligan said phone and broadband companies are using the time of year to threaten customers with disconnection. “Customers are being hounded for the smallest amounts of money – in many cases being transferred to agents in India who are on commission for every little payment they manage to squeeze out of vulnerable people,” Cllr Mulligan said. “They are disconnecting people from phones and broadband without notice, knowing that it’s a time of the year when connectivity is so important to families.” “The behaviour is unethical, immoral and just down right wrong,” said the councillor.
making it illegal for anyone to tattoo or give an intimate piercing to anyone under the age of 18, regardless of consent. “Rather than leaving it to the uncertainty of a rare criminal prosecution we need to give legal clarity and regulation. “This horrific case highlights the need to send a clear message that it is unacceptable to ink someone under the age of 18. Setting an age limit effectively legislates for what is best practice and will target rogue operators.” The father-of-six tattooed a one-centimetre dot on his son’s arm using a tattoo gun with a needle point, a court was told. He was charged with assault after the mother discovered what had happened, became “furious” and went to gardaí. Sgt Brian Jacob said the boy complained after that his arm
was sore. The tattoo was a 1cm inked “dot” on the boy’s left upper arm. It was done without the permission of the boy or the mother, Sgt Jacob said. The boy was “still left with the mark”. The court heard it was done with a tattoo gun with a needle point which “goes in and out like a sewing machine” and squirts ink under the skin. The woman took her son to hospital, where it was treated as a “needle stick injury”. Athy District Court heard the parents were separated and the incident happened during an access visit. The nine-month sentence is concurrent to a two-year sentence the father is serving for possession of drugs. Defence barrister Aisling Murphy said the man did not accept he did it without the boy’s permission.
Butler wants to ban tattoos for under-18s A TD wants to ban tattoos for people under the age of 18. Mary Butler, Fianna Fáil deputy for Waterford, was responding to the case of a man who was given a prison sentence for tattooing his eightyear-old son. She said the case highlights the need for broader regulation in the body art sector. Ms Butler has previously introduced legislation to ban tattoos and intimate piercings for juveniles. If passed, it would outlaw tattoos and intimate body piercings for under-18s and strengthen health and safety regulation in the sector. “It’s clear that we need regulation in this area,” said the TD. “The uncertainty over consent and regulation in the sector disputed in this case can be completely removed by

It is no wonder that Christmas happens towards the end of the year, the festival dating as it does to a pre-Christian era, when the days were short, the nights long and the weather some of the worst that people would have. It is a time when people needed a rest period and also a time of celebration to remind them of what was most important in their lives. It is also a time, should we forget, of one of the most important times in the Christian calendar. It is the time that Jesus Christ was born, a miracle unto mankind, a child that offered hope and a time for celebration. There is a tendency to overlook the religious aspect of this time of the year in an ever increasingly commercial world. It is so easy to forget what this holiday period is really all about in the hurly burly of the buying and getting, making sure that you have all the presents, all the food and all the drink that people will want to enjoy the holiday. But the real meaning of the Christmas period is something larger than that and yet somehow encompasses that as well. It is about the larger message of the holiday period, the birth of Jesus Christ as well as how you celebrate that in the context of your family and the wider community. While everyone should enjoy the Christmas period no one should forget what we are celebrating. In an age where there are less and less people celebrating Christmas through organized religion that doesn’t mean to say that people are neglecting the spiritual side of this time of year. People do not forget what Christmas is about even though they might celebrate it in a different way then we did in years gone by. By having family and friends at the center of our Christmas experience we are all celebrating the true essence of this time of the year. And nor do we forget others at this time of the year. Those who are less fortunate in our own communities as well as those in other lands who haven’t even the barest of necessities to survive. Christmas is a time of looking inward as well as outward. Of giving and sharing, of having fun as well as reflecting on what has happened during the year. Above all it is a time of joyous celebration, of remembrance of the birth of Jesus Christ and what that event thousands of years ago meant for the world. There is so much that has happened in this year nearly over in what is seeming to be an ever more fractious world, a world full of discord where new technologies which we thought would bring people together only seems to drive people further apart that is good that we have the time and space to rest and relax as well as reflect on what is truly important in life. Above all else, have a Happy Christmas.
Christmas still has meaning, says bishop
ALTHOUGH Christmas has become commercialised, it has not lost its true meaning, the Bishop of Waterford says. In a Christmas message, Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan asks: “What do we see happeningat Christmas time?” He says: “We see families and friends getting together. People are buying gifts for each other, trying to do their best to get the right gifts, as funds will allow. “People are thinking about others, giving more to charities like
With Christmas just around the corner, many of us will be planning to return home to spend some of the Christmas holidays with elderly parents, grandparents or family relatives. Home Instead Senior Care is advising, over the holiday season, to keep an eye out for tell-tale signs that our elderly relatives may need more help around the home. The warning signs that indicate an ageing parent or relative may need more help at home include: • Do they seem to be eating well or is food spoiling in the fridge? • Have they stopped doing daily grooming rituals? • Is the house cold? • Are they taking the right medications? • Does their car have new scratches or dents? • Is post or newspapers piling up without being read? • Are they using furniture, to pull themselves up to stand? For more information call 051 333966 or 058 75298 or visit www.homeinstead.ie
St. Vincent de Paul,Trocaire, Aid to the Church in Need, the Simon Community and so on. “Families are making wonderful memories for children. People are trying to forgive and repair family hurts. “This giving and sharing is good, very good, and it is all because of the birth of a baby in a stable in Bethlehem around two thousand and nineteen years ago. “We are still celebrating His birth.”

Bad little Benny is an elf and safety issue
B
enny is back. I thought I had seen the last of this uninvited house guest a year ago when he departed without even saying goodbye. But, no, he’s back - along with my grandchildren. I meet him every morning in a different part of the house. Today he was at the foot of the stairs and yesterday he was hidden among the branches of the Christmas tree. He caused a right mess in the kitchen by spilling flour and writing his name in it. And I wasn’t too impressed at how he crumbled a mince pie on the table and seated himself among the wreckage. He didn’t even eat any of it. Benny is an elf. Not a warriorstyle elf like Legolas, who can brandish a sword, draw a bow and fight the forces of evil. Not even a jolly ho! ho! ho! elf who can help Santa make toys and pack the sleigh. Benny is
Michael Wolsey
a rather anemic class of a pixie who looks like he has never done a day’s, or a sleigh’s, work in his life. Nevertheless, this little chap in a red suit does have a direct link to Santa. For Benny is an Elf on the Shelf. His family come from America. Some of them moved to Ireland a few years back and they have now multiplied and installed themselves in half the
homes in the country. Homes with children, that is. Benny apparently pops out every evening to visit Santa at the North Pole and report on the naughty-or-nice status of the children he has been living with. He returns next morning and hides in a different part of the house each day where he sometimes gets up to tricks, like the writing in the flour episode. Benny bothers me, I must admit. I don’t want to shatter any illusions but I have a strong feeling he won’t be able to make his nightly return journey without some intervention from me. So what if I forget to send him on his way or if I return him to the same place twice? It’s no laughing matter. Well, not for me. The children are having great fun with the little guy in whom they seem to have total faith. They greet each new Benny appearance with peals of delight. Their grandfather, however, is a worried man. I wake in the night vaguely anxious that I may not have sent Benny on
his polar journey. Last night I just couldn’t remember and had to go downstairs to check if he had really moved. That’s not all that worries me about Benny. There’s something disquieting about the way he looks at me - reminds me of the sinister clown in the Stephen King novel. It also strikes me as rather sneaky of Benny to be reporting to Santa every night. Fine when the children are nice - but does he really relate the naughty stuff as well? Is that any way to repay a family’s hospitality? The Anglo Saxons had a fear of elves, believing they might attack them while they slept, causing the sort of problems we would nowadays attribute to rheumatism or arthritis. When they felt such pains they said they had been ‘elfshot’. The cure for this misfortune was a combination of feverfew, red nettles and waybread. I’m probably worrying over nothing, but I think I’ll mix up some, just in case. Anybody know a good shop for feverfew?

WILDLIFE
with Justin Ivory
Robin Redbreast
Robin (Photo Justin Ivory) After Santa’s reindeer the most iconic animal associated with Christmas must be the Robin. Images of our favourite, cheeky little bird are everywhere this time of year - cards, cake decorations, tree decorations, ornaments, wrapping paper – the list goes on. How did the Robin come to be associated so much with Christmas? Well, the answer, believe it or not, is to do with postmen delivering Christmas cards. The sending of Christmas cards really started in Victorian times in the mid-18th century, 1843 to be precise, and was the brainchild of a civil servant called Sir Henry Cole. The postmen who delivered the cards wore bright red coats and became known as “robins” or “redbreasts”. As Christmas cards became more popular, Nativity scenes gave way to snow scenes with Robins on them. The snow scenes, initially, were a reminder of the very bad winter of 1836 and the robins represented the postmen who deliver the cards. Although known as ‘redbreast’ if you look closely at a Robin the breast is actually orange. So how come we call it Robin Redbreast? Well until Tudor times and the first oranges were brought back by explorers there was no word in English for the colour orange. Prior to that the AngloSaxons used the word Ruddock for the Robin, which means ‘red bird’. From the late Middle Ages it became known as the ‘redbreast’. Christmas for many centuries has primarily been a Christian feast and there are many stories associating the Robin with Christianity and how it got its red breast. Legend has it that a Robin flew to assist Christ on the cross and tried to pull out the thorns in his head. In doing so the Robin pricked itself and got stained in blood. As a remembrance of that kind act all Robins ever since have had a red breast. On that note I would like to wish all the readers of the column a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Mass offered and also offered for her father Richard Dwyer, and her brothers Richard Dwyer Jnr. & Michael Dwyer at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday 16th December in Duncannon Church. It was a sad December morning, I stood by an open grave, I watched them lower, The mother I loved, And tried so hard to be brave, I knew I could not awaken, Your silent remains in the clay, So I laid my heart down beside you, And sadly walked away, The next time we meet, Will be at Heaven’s door, You will be there to greet me, And I will cry no more, I’ll put my arms around you, And kiss your smiling face, Only then will my broken heart, Fall gently into place, It’s hard to put on paper, The feelings we have inside, Of a broken hearted family, Who have missed you since you died, You often used to say to us, You’ll miss me when I’m gone, Believe me I never knew, That heartaches last so long. - From Trevor and Stephen No length of time can take away, Our thoughts of you from day to day, Time slips by and life goes on, But from our hearts you are never gone, And as each day dawns and starts anew, And as each day ends we think of you, And in between no matter where, Deep in our hearts you are always there. - Always remembered by Trevor, Leanne, Shiona, Brona and Tommy. Although I never knew you Nanny, Because you’re in Heaven above, Please be my guardian angel, And watch over me with love. - From Aisling and your grandaughter Harper Rose To have you as my sister Rose, Was cause enough for pride. Seán Michael takes the reins Having completed his five year term as County GAA Chairman, Paddyjoe Ryan stepped down on Thursday last at Annual Convention. Newly elected Kill clubman Sean Michael O’Regan will take on the onerous position but will be buoyed by the positive financial position which emanated from the meeting. While county teams cost over 800k the board showed a profit of nearly 50k on the year. With TQS remaining as the major sponsor and the Walsh Park development coming stream on things are looking very by the positive indeed for the Villager incoming chairman. tributes Many were paid to the outgoing chairman who has now Waterford senior camogie players, Niamh stepped down having completRockett and Beth Carton are pictured with the ed two terms in the position. EASTERN CHANGES Meanwhile at the Eastern Board Convention held at the well appointed St Saviours GAA Club there were also changes at the top table. Michael Wadding (Roanmore) who has done trojan work, along with his officers, has competed his term of office and will be replaced by Michael O’Brien (Portlaw). Tough defeat for Vikings
There is an old adage in basketball that you can’t coach height and this was surely the case in Sligo last Saturday night when WIT Vikings travelled north for an away encounter with Sligo All stars. As well as a US player the All Stars have two 6’ 8’’Spaniards in their line up. Vikings without their big man Daniel Sheehan who picked up a fractured bone in his right hand in the win over LKIT were always going find this a difficult task. The game ended on a scoreline of Sligo All Stars 99 WIT Vikings 79 WIT Vikings started this game with the intention of containing the big men inside while trying to put some pressure on the Sligo teams outside shooters. While they managed to contain the big guys, five three pointers in the first period alone forced Vikings to change their tactics. O’Neill with 8 first quarter points along with baskets from Murphy, Grassey and Kavanagh ensured Vikings stayed in the game and the period ended 24 to 20 Sligo leading. The second quarter was a real
downer for the Vikings. Having to push out on the shooters, the big guys Romo and San Martin started to get control of the boards ensuring that the home side had control of the game. Vikings made just 14 points as against 28 by the All Stars giving them a mountain to climb in the second half. Into the second half and Vikings made a big push to pull themselves back into the game O’Neill, O’Rorke, Pepper all combining to make baskets. Two three pointers in a row from Grassey and they were starting to make a bit of an impression but shooting guard O’Reilly and the big Spaniard, Romo responded to ensure Vikings never got close and by the end of the third Sligo had increased their lead to 26 points. As in the past with this Vikings team they never give up and they took the final period 25 to 19 to reduce the margin to 20. In the end Vikings just did not have the players to match up to the Sligo big men and had to give the guards too much space to operate in.
ters in Lismore, the company announced their continued sponsorship of Waterford GAA County teams for 2020. Corporate Managing Director Maire Quilty “As a Waterford based company in the international stage, we hold special pride in being an Irish success story. As a Waterford native I feel particularly honoured to be sponsors of our county teams
and we are delighted to support them again in any way we can this year. I want to wish the teams every success in 2020-we are behind you all the way”. The CMD thanked the board for all their cooperation and she wished outgoing chairman Paddyjoe Ryan every success as he steps down from his role. On behalf of the board the outgoing chairman thanked
TQS for all their support and help throughout the year. He was proud to have this hugely successful Waterford based International company on board. Both the senior hurling manager Liam Cahill and the senior football manager Benji Whelan as well as County Board Officers were all in attendance. Let’s hope that in 2020 the old saying “confidence breeds
Waterford U-14 Camogie Teams MedalS The Waterford U-14 A & B panels were recently presented with their medals from various Inter-County Tournament wins during 2019. The Waterford U-14 (A) team were the winners of the Waterford and Cork Inter-County Tournament’s and the U-14 (B) team were winners of the Wexford and Waterford U-14 (B) Shield Inter-County Tournament’s during 2019. Camogie within Waterford is on a high at the moment and the continued success of their underage teams along with the success of the senior and minor teams in recent seasons can only mean that the work is being put in at grass roots level in clubs, schools and development squads. Everyone involved with camogie in Waterford are already looking forward to the season ahead. The night itself in WIT Arena was attended by Waterford senior camogie captain, Niamh Rockett and Waterford two time All-Star Beth Carton. They were very generous with their time and in a question and answer session they gave a great insight into the level of commitment that players at the top of their game now have to make. They also presented the players with their medals.
Wildcats keep climbing league WIT WILDCATS kept their winning run of Super League games on track with a comprehensive victory over Carlow IT on Thursday night last. This 79-46 win moves Wildcats up the league table hot on the heels of DCU. But Wildcats supporters were silent in the early minutes of this encounter as the visitors raced into a 15 points to 6 lead after six minutes. Coach Jillian Hayes called her starters ashore and put her younger players on to steady the ship. This they did to perfection and had the game all square 15 points each by the end of the first quarter. Gradually Wildcats edged ahead and led 32-20 at the halfway stage thanks to a full court press and a uptempo game that the Carlow side found difficult to handle. The games top scorer Maria Palarino plus Jazz Walker and Cathy Kavanagh were
WIT Wildcats Helena Rohan scores underneath the basket. Photo: Noel Browne most effective but the star of the show was Abby Flynn who was simply sensational. Into the third quarter where we saw Steph O’Shea eventually find her true form with
4 consecutive baskets which were enhanced by quality scores from Flynn and Walker. With the final quarter to play Wildcats led 53-36 and you knew there was no way
back for a weary Carlow side. By the games end all Wildcats players made a contribution as Kate Hickey, Sinead Deegan, Debbie Ogayemi and Helena Rohan were part of the scoring machine which totalled 79 points to Carlow’s 46. While this was a solid win for the Waterford outfit it was far from perfect for they were lucky to fade off with struggling opposition. This will not be the case early in the New Year when they travel to Cork to take on a very good Father Matthews team and the following week they are home to league leaders DCU . They have worked hard to have themselves in a wonderful position and deserve to enjoy the Christmas break but they must be prepared to hit the ground running in January if they are to be in the melting pot for the Super League honours in March 2020.
