Council slaps a ban on plastic WATERFORD City and County Council has declared war on single-use plastic. Coucillors have voted to ban it from all the local authority’s buildings, hired venues, catering and all events organised by the council. In addition, events licensed or funded by the council will be required to demonstrate measures to eliminate single -use plastics and segregation of waste . Single-use plastic includes products such as straws, bottles, cups and cutlery and any plastic item that is made for temporary use. The council’s actions are in line with Government and EU policies designed to protect the environment. In January 2018, the European Commission adopted the firstever Europe-wide strategy on plastics. It envisages that all plastic

packaging on the EU market will be recyclable by 2030. In January 2019, the Minister for Climate Action and the Environment, Richard Bruton, announced that government departments, public bodies, and schools would lead the way here. Waterford’s councillors have now taken the battle to local level. “Plastic is designed to last forever but is often used just once,” said Fergus Galvin, Director of Services for Roads, Water and Environment. “Although we might not think much of it when we buy bottles of our favourite drink or buy a sandwich in a plastic box, these choices have a serious impact on the health of our planet and ourselves. “This policy enables us to say a firm ‘no’ to single use plastics in our organisation.”

PEOPLE Before Profit has added its voice to protests against plans for a tower block in Ballybeg The high-rise development, on the vacant site of a former public house, would provide 45 homes but the party says the plan ignores the concerns of residents about the impact it will have on the estate. Úna Dunphy who stood for PBP in the general election, said the party was calling for a house building programme, “but it must be of high quality, and infill housing on estates must enhance the location, the area and the community”. “This proposed development must be rethought,” she said in a statement. “Full and meaningful consultation with residents is essential, design and planning must be of the highest standard and must blend with the estate as a whole. The estate will have to cater for an influx of new residents, and sufficient facilities for this next generation must feature in any future development”.
TD speaks out over online hate campaign WATERFORD’S politicians have been stunned by the revelation that Fianna Fáil TD Mary Butler has been subjected to a campaign of online hate and harassment. The TD spoke out after her re-election, saying things had got worse. The shock development followed the revelation that online abuse had been a factor in the decision by Minister of State John Halligan and former minister Paudie Coffey not to contest the election. And last month Waterford councillors agreed to regulate their social media accounts in an effort to curb abuse. In a statement, Ms Butler said she had been “subjected to a sustained and co-ordinated campaign of online hate and harassment.” “Since my re-election as a TD this has intensified,” she said. She revealed “a very sinister development” which had happened since her election success. “I became aware that a fake ‘Mary Butler TD’ Facebook page had been created and used to ‘like’ and ‘laugh’ at certain comments on other, legitimate pages,” she explained. “The intention and effect of this activity was to create the impression that I was dismissive of victims of child sexual abuse. “Shortly after I was made aware of the fake Facebook profile, the account disap-
peared. However, those behind this smear operation had taken screenshots of the fake activity and in a sophisticated and highly co-ordinated effort, distributed the images through social media throughout Waterford and around the country.” Ms Butler said she had reported this attack to An Garda Siochána had also suspended her Facebook account. “The effect of this attack has been devastating for me personally and for my family,” she said. DEAL: A Fianna Fáil member of Waterford council has taken issue with his parliamentary party’s decision not to enter into coalition talks with Sinn Féin. “ I would have a different opinion,” said Cllr Adam Wyse. “I think you need to sit down with everyone at the table. I think every TD is elected to govern, I think every candidate runs in the hope that they will be able to play a role in the formation of Government or a role for their constituency and I think ruling out all parties and none is not the most democratic or right way to do it.” The councillor told WLR he would like to see Sinn Féin TD David Cullinane in a ministerial role. “If Sinn Fein are going to be in Government I believe it is important for us that we have a minister,” he said.

Blues take the cardiac campaign to heart
WATERFORD FC have taken up the cause of 24/7 Cardiac Cover for the South East . The Blues will feature the campaign logo in the primary sponsor space on their shirts this season.
The club’sowner Lee Power was made aware of the cause during the pre-season. “It shook me to my core,” he said. “I could not believe that after 5pm the South East of Ireland’s main cardiac care unit closes
and it could sometimes take up to two hours for patients to arrive at a medical centre with the appropriate equipment in which to treat them. “It made me think of my own father who has suffered from cardiac issues in the past, that if he was still in his hometown he might not be with us today.” Mr Lee said the club had turned down a bid for the main sponsorship. “With a cause this important, I feel that we as a club need to reach out and remind people that Waterford FC is not only a football club. We’re a community, one that stretches throughout the South East and further abroad. “ The Blues played their opening league game against St. Patrick’s Athletic without the cardiac care logo, but will launch the kit at the Viking Hotel on the Cork Road this evening (February 19) at 7pm. It has been announced, meanwhile, that the cath lab at University Hospital Waterford is relocating to UPMC Whitfield for the next 15 weeks to allow an upgrade of equipment. The works are expected to be completed by mid-May.
It’s Grand Marshal Moloney
A long-time stalwart of Waterford’s labour movement has been chosen as the Grand Marshal of this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the city. Henry Moloney (above) retired after 46 years of voluntary service as a delegate to Waterford Council of Trade Unions. He has given a lifetime of service as a community
activist and advocate for an array of charitable and service organisations including the Kidney Care Association, and the Campaign for Radiotherapy Services. The Mayor of Waterford, Councillor John Pratt, said: “It is a fitting tribute to Henry’s commitment to community service and to his involvement with the city’s trade union movement”.
This year’s parade, themed ‘Passion for The Planet’, will start at 1pm. The route will include Thomas Street, The Quay and The Mall, ending on Parnell Street. Community groups, organisations and companies wishing to take part should apply online on the homepage of the Waterford Council website.

Time to switch mortage: 4,400 pay too much
THOUSANDS of householders in Waterford are significantly overpaying on their mortgage, an expert group hs said. The Association of Irish Mortgage Advisors (AIMA) claims that the vast majority of the estimated 175,000 mortgage holders in Ireland on standard variable rates are overpaying by hundreds, if not thousands of euro, each year. It says this equates to 4,472 mortgage holders in Waterford city and county. AIMA contends that although there has been some growth in the number of people switching mortgage provider, the pace has been too slow – particularly in the last two years when rates have dropped for new mortgages and banks have become increasingly competitive on fixed rates. Trevor Grant, Chairperson of AIMA, advises all mortgage holders tp review their rate and mortgage agreement every two years to ensure they are getting the best value.
“By our own market analysis, we would estimate that over 4,400 homeowners in Waterford are on a variable rate,” he said. “We believe that less than one in five these are on the best available rate and therefore the majority could save by switching. ” Brokers Ireland. meanwhile, has said Irish mortgage holders are paying 1.51pc more than the euro area average and it’s costing them approximately €229 more every month on a €300k mortgage over 30 years and a massive €82K over the lifetime of the mortgage . Rachel McGovern, Director, Financial Services at Brokers Ireland which represents 1,250 Broker firms, said: “These rates are unjustifiable, particularly since savers on the other side of the equation are not getting any benefit, both borrowers and savers are being squeezed and the winners are the lenders. “The situation points to the lack of sufficient competition in the Irish market.”

In 2015, the UK was the second largest exporter of services in the world providing 7.1% of total global services exports – the USA is the leading provider at 15.6%. Services account for 75% of the UK’s economic output and 44% of its international trade. Tradeable services continue to grow and are the fastest growing element of UK trade. About 37% of UK service exports go to the EU compared to 48% for goods. The EU is the UK’s single largest market for services, worth 70% more than its nearest rival – the USA and worth more than the total of the eight next biggest customers combined. a total value of €62.9 billion compared to financial services worth €26 billion. Non-financial services are responsible for m o r e exports than financial services and also provide more jobs. For example, aircraft engine manufacturers often sell their engines at a loss. Profits are made on the sale of services such as inspections, maintenance and repairs and many of these contracts will last for decades. Providing them requires freedom of movement for people to provide those services, often at short notice. It also needs mutual recognition of qualifications and standards. As a third country, the EU cannot offer the same deal to UK as it had as a member. The UK will find out that deeper liberalisation of services is much tougher to achieve than on tariffs and it is always easier within a bloc than outside it.

Nicola McMahon spoke to the group about money being invested in cancer research development and the Daffodil Centre at Waterford Unverfsity Hospital. This facility is providing

INSPECTOR MONTALBANO Set in a fictional town in Sicily, Inspector Montalbano has already proved to be huge hit all over Europe. It comes as no surprise as the series is based on the phenomenally successful series of books of the same name. Montalbano is the titular hero of the series, living on the seafront in a wonderful house but having a long term girlfriend, Livia, who is based on the Italian mainland. When not trying to puzzle out seemingly impossible crime cases he spends most of his time eating in one of the many restaurants in the area. Food is as essential to Montalbano as spirituality is to a Buddhist monk. Even though the crimes that Montalbano investigates are as dark and foreboding as any you would find in a Scandanavian series the presence of so much sunshine and subsequent Sicilian mindset brings a lightness that you rarely encounter in most crime dramas. Also there is a real wit at play in this series that is very much in evidence in the books as well. When this country is being rocked by gales and rain the Inspector Montalbano series is a welcome respite. THE CABIN IN the WOODS Just when you thought that the Horror Genre had run out of steam along comes a movie which makes you think that there might just be some left. As a group of friends are heading off to a cabin supposedly owned by one of their relatives, a group of scientists, or at least what appear to be scientists, are gathering together in some high tech facility getting ready for something to happen. What that something is you don’t know yet but you just know that it isn’t going to be good. At best you think that they might be running some tests on the emotional and physical responses of the friends as they try to overcome whatever horror that is in store for them. This is a horror movie after all and even though there are bound to be twists your mind at this stage doesn’t take you further than the usual tropes that exist in horror movies. Needless to say the friends have a great time in the cabin in the woods. All except for the discoveries that they make in the cellar, a collection of strange disparate objects, one of which one of the friends reads aloud from. This is the cue for the horror to begin and soon enough a family of resurrected zombies descends on the cabin. The scientists are observing all of this but at the same time observing similar types of events all over the world. You might think that you knew what was coming but the movie now makes a leap that no one could imagine. A fun, scary horror with some great, original twists.

16 new speed cameras go on watch in county
GARDAÍ have extended speed cameras to more than 900 extra roads after research showed that three out of four fatalities were occurring in these zones. While 903 new safety zones are being brought in, some 575 zones are being removed, bringing the total extra roads covered to 328. The Garda has released a list of the new locations , including 16 here in Waterford. Safety cameras operate in areas where there is a history of speed-related collisions, known as speed enforcement zones, using a fleet of marked vehicles. In Waterford, some of the new routes covered by cameras are on the N72, N25, R680 and R671. At least nine fatal collisions have occurred on the new routes being brought into the speed
camera network in Waterford. The new zones bring the total number covered in the county to 29. You can see an interactive map with the exact location of all cameras on he Garda website at garda.ie/gosafe.html This extension to the speed camera network comes as 170 hi-tech hand-held speed guns are deployed this month which, unlike previous ones, can operate in all weather conditions and at night and can target vehicles up to 1,000m away. In addition, all 765 members of Roads Policing units across the country will have new smartphone devices this month. By the end of March, a further 1,235 will be deployed to detective units, community police officers, and response units.
These devices will allow users to check both the driver and the vehicle to see if it is taxed and insured, or if the driver is disqualified. Gardaí will also receive warnings on their device if the car is stolen or is wanted in relation to a crime, including any firearms incidents, if the driver is associated with an organised crime gang, or if there is a warrant out for arrest. Superintendent Tony Lonergan of the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau said there will be 1,322 safety cameras nationwide. He said the latest expansion of the system is based on an analysis of fatal and injury collision data from January 2016 to December 2018. It identified 1,322 zones that had a collision history suitable for inclusion.

Inspectors give birth unit clean bill of health MATERNITY services at University Hospital Waterford have been given a clean bill of health from HIQA, the health information and quality authority. An unnounced inspection found the hospital to be “compliant or substantially compliant” with required national stndards. HIQA reported that UHW had “a clearly defined and effective leadership, governance and management structure”. “There was good oversight of the quality and safety of services by senior managers at the hospital who used multiple sources of information to identify opportunities for improvement,” said the report “Hospital management was actively working to optimise maternity care and to progress implementation of the national standards.” One criticism was that UHW is not part of a formalised maternity network under a single governance structure as de-
fined in the National Maternity Strategy. HIQA advsied: “The implementation of a formalised maternity network under a single governance structure needs to be progressed by the South/ South West Hospital Group in line with National Standards.” At the time of the inspection, the hospital had vacancies for permanent consultant obstetricians, consultant paediatricians and midwives. HIQA noted: “The Neonatal Unit was not staffed with consultant neonatologists as recommended for neonatal units providing level 2 neonatal care. Rather, consultant paediatricians with a special interest in neonatology provided this level of care. “The neonatology service at the hospital needs to be additionally resourced in line with national guidelines for level two ( regional) neonatal care.” HIQA inspected 19 maternity units in hospitals across the country.

Opinion&Comment
Politics is about Power
P
olitics may be about many things but above all it is about power. It is about attaining it, wielding it and if you’re lucky retaining it. In a democracy the opposition may play an important role but to a large extent it is much like being a eunuch in a seraglio. You can look on but you can’t do anything. At the moment even though we have a Government in place there is a power vacuum and while there is no doubt feverish talks behind the scenes, it doesn’t seem obvious as to who will form the next Government. There are a lot of permutations of who could possibly form the next Government but it is all a bit tentative at the moment. Sinn Fein would appear to be in the driving seat due to their phenomenal result in the general election, but they don’t seem to be close to forming a viable Government. They are having talks with other left wing parties and groupings in an attempt to form one of the first-ever left Governments that this country would see. This would seem to be a logical step to take but when you take into account the fractious nature of left wing parties, not even considering the whole range of left wing thinking that is involved, the long term viability of such a Government doesn’t look good. Sinn Fein could go into coalition with either of the two main political parties and this seems to be favoured by some in Sinn Fein. Eoin O’Broin, TD has gone on record as saying that Sinn Fein won’t be able to go into Government unless it forms a coalition with either Fianna Fail or Fine Gael. Fine Gael has categorically ruled out the idea of any kind of coalition with Sinn Fein. Fianna Fail in the run up to election day also said categorically that it wouldn’t form a coalition with Sinn Fein. Following Sinn Fein’s huge success it seems to have rowed back on this. After all if Michael Martin doesn’t become Taoiseach in the next Government he will be the only leader of that party who will never have been Taoiseach and he knows he won’t have another chance. A stumbling block in the formation of any sort of coalition of Sinn Fein with the two main parties are it’s leftist policies and it’s history. Waterford’s David Cullinane with the ‘up the Ra’ comment has been quoted widely and with much dismay in political circles as an example of how Sinn Fein is not to be trusted. Michael Lowry has said that this time next week Mary Lou could be Taoiseach. It might happen, but a week is a long time in politics especially when the ultimate prize is so close.
Our View
A full capacity crowd who attended a concert at Saint Patrick’s church recently heard performances from Dordon Male Voice Choir, The Waterford High Hopes Choir, The Three Sisters & Joe (Sisters Carolyn , Coleen and Shawn), Cathy Mac from Dublin and Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan, delivered to standing ovations. THE foundation of a religious community of sisters has brought “new life” to the diocese of Waterford and Lismore, says Bishop Phonsie Cullinan. Two Irish and two American nuns have established the Sisters of the Home of the Mother in Cahir. “They’re here to encourage and to help the Church here, why would I refuse such an offer of this new life? “ asked Bisop Cullinan. “There are wonderful things happening in our Church, we probably don’t recognise them enough, but you know, as St Paul says, if one part of the Church is ailing – and the Church of course is the body of Christ – if we get help from another part of the body of Christ well surely we should accept it.” “You know the Irish Church sent out missionaries all over the world to help the Church in foreign parts, and now we are the beneficiaries often of evangelical outreach,” he said. The four sisters are taking up residence in the old parochial house and will assist in pastoral work, helping to spread the Gospel and reach out to the marginalised.
Here’s one thing they must not change
W
hatever o t h e r policies the next Government jettisons, it should not abandon Ireland 2040, the plan for decentralisation. Nor should new ministers tinker or toy with this so-called National Planning Framework. If they can strengthen the proposals, fine. And if they can speed up things that would be great, for the outgoing Government has done very little to implement the plan since announcing it in 2017. But the concept is crucial and it should not be weakened or abandoned. Lack of decentralisation is at the root of much of the social unrest and unhappiness which drove voters in the recent general election. Dublin has grown out of all proportion to the size of the country and has sucked in far too many of the nation’s jobs, facilities and resources. That’s why people are spending
Michael Wolsey hours every day on miserable commutes or finding themselves working around the clock to pay off sky-high Dublin mortgages or even higher rents. Ireland is one of the most centralised countries in the developed world. We can all see the problems this creates but attempts to solve them have been thwarted by parochial politicians who moan about the decline of rural Ireland while rejecting any remedies which do not directly favour their own little neck of the woods. There isn’t a high-tech factory for every tiny village. Every small town can’t have a fully equipped and staffed hospital.
There can’t be a third-level college for everyone in the audience. But we can spread these facilities around - give more of them to our few cities and bigger towns and less to Dublin. And we can develop pleasant dormitory towns and a decent public transport system to link them to these larger centres. Until quite recently this sort of commuter community had been developing unaided in the greater Dublin area. Places such as Balbriggan and Drogheda, Bray and Greystones, were thriving as dormitory towns where the cost of living was relatively low and connection to the city relatively easy. The crazy growth of Dublin has spoiled that. These are now expensive places and commuters who can afford to live in them are faced with extremely unpleasant journeys on packed public transport and bumper-to-bumper roads. For the sake of greater Dublin, as well as the regions, we must decentralise. That’s what Ireland 2040 is all about. We tried it before and
failed. In 2002 a Fianna Fáil government announced what it termed a National Spatial Stragegy based on ‘gateways’ the regional cities - and ‘hubs’, the dormitory towns that would serve them. The plan was destroyed by parochialism. Politicians feared that favouring Town A over Town B would be electorally fatal, so every place with a handful of votes had to get something and we ended up with gateways in every county and hubs at the end of every boreen. We cannot let this happen again. Good planning needs to move beyond local rivalries and Ireland 2040 is designed to do just that. But I fear for it, as Independents and backwoodsmen from the back benches start naming their price for supporting a government. If we waste this opportunity, as we did with the spatial strategy plan, then by 2040 we will still be fretting over the problems of 2020. Nothing will have been solved, everything will be worse.

Dementia and dental hygiene maintenance • Visually demonstrate and tell the person what you are hoping to do at each stage of the process
Advertorial By Elaine Howard
Maintaining regular dental visits and good oral hygiene can become challenging for family and care staff particularly if the person no longer recognises or is unable to carry out the associated actions of brushing teeth. Unfortunately, this can result in unfinished or missed dental hygiene opportunities for people with dementia which can lead to tooth decay, infection and pain. As dementia progresses, the person living with the disease may be unable to communicate discomfort, pain or infection. It’s important that family members and carers be alert to physical cues for pain or distress; repeatedly touching a part of the face, grimacing when eating or avoiding food or consistently withdrawing from any inter-
• If the person is showing discomfort or agitation, leave brushing and try again later. • Be aware of the potential for pain. Observe for physical cues of pain.
ventions involving the mouth. These are all potential indicators of pain. The same vigilance is required for people with dementia who use dentures. Research suggests that care staff and family members experience challenges in supporting good dental hygiene. (Willumsen et al 2018, Newton et al 2018). Bevin Mahon of
Dental Tech Limited, says providing training to care staff in nursing homes is vital. She adds that individual dental care plans are successful when partnered with care staff who knowledgeably support the person living with dementia. There are helpful tips to assist care staff and family with dental hygiene maintenance. This has
the double benefit of helping the person living with dementia maintain good oral health while also, over time, lowering health care costs as the need for complex and expensive treatments are minimised. HELPFUL TIPS: • Create a comfortable and unrushed environment.
• Observe the mouth for changes such as white tongue or patches on the gums, bleeding gums when brushed, brown patches on the teeth, broken or loose teeth, ill-fitting dentures. Inform the person’s dentist. • Choose what works best for the person. For example a soft bristle child’s toothbrush, a child’s sweeter tasting toothpaste Floss holders or interden-
tal brushes may be less invasive that floss. • Take time to choose a dentist who has experience of supporting people with dementia. • Dentures: Rinse and brush daily. At night place the dentures in a container with water and denture disinfectant. Use a soft brush or wet gauze to gently clean the gums and mouth. WHAT invites artists to make UHW ‘A Better Place’
Waterford Healing Arts Trust (WHAT) has announced an open call to artists based in Ireland to submit proposals for its A Better Place exhibition, which will take place at University Hospital Waterford (UHW) later this year. This annual exhibition, curated by WHAT, aims to make UHW a better place for all – patients, visitors and staff – by displaying original, uplifting artworks. Further details are available from www.waterfordhealingarts.com or 051 842664. The closing date for proposals is Tuesday 10 March at 5pm. Now in its fifth year, A Better Place is a unique opportunity for artists to have their work shown at the hospital. Artists are invited to submit two samples of their work to be considered and voted on for a full solo exhibition. These
samples will be displayed at the hospital for a period of four weeks and all who view them – patients, visitors, staff – will have an opportunity to submit their vote via a voting card. Artists are not identified during the selection process. A Better Place is generously supported by the Arts Council. The exhibition will be on view from June to September 2020. Full details of the Open Call and how to submit are available from WHAT at 051-842664 / WHAT@hse.ie and www.waterfordhealingarts.com Pictured at the launch of last year’s A Better Place exhibition were Grace O’Sullivan, MEP, Claire Meaney, Waterford Healing Arts Trust and Deirdre Dunne, A Better Place 2019 artist. Kieran Goss and Annie Kinsella embark on a nationwide Irish tour of their new album ‘Oh, The Starlings’ from February 28th 2020. This is the duo’s first Irish tour since the release last year of their critically acclaimed debut album. They spent much of 2019 touring abroad in support of the album, with over one hundred shows in Holland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark and the U.K. Oh, The Starling’s was released in the early Spring of what turned out to be a professionally gratifying but personally fraught year. Kieran’s father died in February 2019 whilst the duo toured abroad. They flew home immediately but a week later were back on stage in Denmark and were essentially away until mid-December. They are both really happy to be back in County Sligo, where for the last twenty years they have made their home. They are really looking forward to introducing ‘Oh, The Starlings’ to Irish audiences. The reception has been amazing everywhere they’ve played, but they know that the songs will have a particular resonance

with and for Irish audiences, as they reflect a deep sense of longing for a place - which is such an Irish trait! “‘Oh, The Starlings’ is a stunning debut! An astonishing, genre-defying piece of work. It’s one of those recordings that rewards repeated listening by revealing subtle textures that might have been missed the first
time around. I’m confident that it will find its way on to ‘Best of’ lists when we look back on the recordings that moved us in 2019.” (Irish Music Magazine) Catch Kieran Goss and Annie Kinsells at the Theatre Royal on Friday 28th February at 8:00pm. Tickets: €23.00 available from the Box Office.
Pat Coldrick, one of the country’s most famous and respected classical guitarists, will be playing a solo concert on the 22nd of February in the Theatre Royal. After playing sell out concerts across Europe, Russia and America Pat is one of the most in demand classical guitarists performing today. Part of his success is down to the fact that he makes an immediate connection with the audiences that he plays to. A performer-composer his own compositions have been have been awarded by the press as well as his peers from The Eagles to Shay Healy. The success of his live performances is obviously down to his undoubted skills as a guitarist but also the warm connection he makes with his audience. The concert is sprinkled with anecdotes from his travels, full of humour, his own compositions, popular songs as well as pieces from the classical canon. Truly a rich, rewarding and enjoyable evening not to be missed.

While May is the month which hosts National Dawn Chorus day and is when nature’s avian orchestra is at its’ strongest and most majestic, it is not the best month for learning to identify birdsong. There is just too much going on in the glorious cacophony that trying to pick out individual species can be challenging. February and March are the perfect months for learning birdsong for the first time. Why? Well, for a start, our spring/ summer migrants have not arrived yet so there are less species for your ears to sort through! Dawn is reasonably late so you don’t have to get up so early to hear the dawn chorus. Actually there’s no need to get up early at all, in March our resident breeding birds are busy singing all day, marking terittories and attracting mates. And lastly, leaves haven’t emerged yet so it is far easier to see the bird making the song. Five song birds which are already singing, or will be doing so in the next few weeks, that you can start getting your ear in are: 1. Song Thrush This song is all about repetition. A short phrase is sung and then repeated 2-5 times before moving onto a new phrase.

Weather wins out
Disappointment all round last weekend for the Waterford Senior Hurlers as their fixture against league holders Limerick was postponed due to the inclement weather. Having originally been fixed for LIT Gaelic Gounds on Saturday, the prevailing storm saw the game refixed for Sunday with a pitch inspection proviso. However, and rightly so, for the safety of all concerned it was called by the off, so, Villager the Deise madedo with a training session alternative. Next weekend, Galway will be the visitors to Walsh Park. The Tribesmen, All Ireland champions three years ago, will bring a formidable challenge. Opening their league campaign with a comprehensive win over Westmeath (1-22/0-10) they went down to a rejuvenated Limerick (1-19/0-14) in their last outing. The Tribesmen will have their talisman Joe Canning back from injury and along with Niall Burke and Conor Whjelan they carry potential firepower. Midfield will see Cathal Mannion and Adrian Touhey with Gearoid McInerney and Padraig shoring up the defence in front of goalkeeper James Skehill. Waterford for their part have been building nicely under manager Liam Cahill. Two goalkeepers of real talent in Stephen O’Keeffe and Billy Nolan. The defence should feature Shane Fives, Conor Prunty, Shane McNulty, Callum Lyons Iarlaith Daly and Kevin Moran.
GAA
Munster Championships Indoors At the Munster indoor juvenile championships under 9 to 11 on Saturday there was a gold medal for Lilly May Queally KCK who was joint 1st under 10 60m meters and she also won a silver in the long jump. In the final of the Girls under 9 60 meters Sheila O’Donoghue Ferrybank was third. In the 1.5 k m walks Maeve O Connor Waterford AC was first in the girls under 17 while West Waterford had a bronze medal in the girls under 15 walk with Direen Ni Icky. Pictured at the Park Hotel were all the past chairmen and the present chairman of the Modeligo GAA Club since its foundation in 1977, Seated, David Fitzgerald, Michael O’Neill, Billy Nugent, Vince O’Donovan, Nick O’Donovan, standing, L.to R. JP Ryan, Johnny O’Byrne, Ed Lonergan, Tom Kiely, Tom O’Byrne and present chairman, Kenny Reddy. Photo by Noel Browne In midfield the management will surely name Conor Gleeson and captain Pauric Mahony. Many will be surprised at the latter, a brilliant striker, named in midfield but, in fairness to the selectors it may well prove a master stroke. Up front Cahill is continuing to make tweaks with Neil Montgomery, Jake Dillon and Jack Fagan previously named against Limerick. The full line has threats written all over it with Jack Prendergast and Patrick Curran flanking the magnificent Stephen Bennett. That said both Jamie Barron and Austin Gleeson are making rapid returns to fitness and it would not surprise in the least
if either or both claimed a place in the starting lineup. A third win for Waterford and top spot retained in the league. Well, that’s my view. FOOTBALL FOCUS Benji Whelan and his Waterford Senior Football team make the long journey to Sligo, facing a home team with two wins (Antrim/London) and one defeat, last time out against Wicklow (1-15/1-10). Sligo manager Paul Taylor will be disappointed at the Aughrim loss with players of the calibre of Liam Gaughan, Paddy O’Connor and Pat Hayes ih his fifteen. However he will have the team fo-
cussed for this Deise challenge. Waterford for their part have been rather unlucky with results. Defeat to Wexford (2-3/08) and Limerick (1-10/0-10) could well have dropped our way although Wicklow were comfortable in their (2-11/1-6) victory. The Waterford team backboned by County champions Rathgormack will surely see Jason and Stephen Curry, Jason Gleeson and captain Conor Murray from the Comeragh club. Add in the likes of Dylan Guiry (Nire) and Brian Lynch (Clashmore/Kinsalebeg) and there is every reason to believe that a positive outcome can be expected.
Disappointing weekend for Vikings While the results did not go the way of WIT Vikings in their two games last weekend there were a lot of good things to take from their two performances. Saturday night was the most disappointing for WIT Vikings as they lost out in an overtime thriller with Fr Mathews Cork in Carrickpherish Sports Hall by a single basket. The overtime went much the way of the game. Mathews hit first and Vikings responded. Nothing in it as the clock ticked down, Grassey made a pair of free throws and a basket to put Vikings one up. Again, it was a three pointer this time from Mathews player coach Bucan that put his team 2 up.Grassey for
Personal best for Thomas Barr in Athlone. At the AIT International Indoor Grand Prix last Wednesday evening Thomas Barr Ferrybank ran a fine race in the 400 metres flat finishing a close third in a personal best time of 46.44 seconds -his old time was 46.85- and he will be delighted with this and hoping to transfer it on to his 400 hurdles times later this year as he prepares for the Olympics in Tokyo,it was the only race of the Indoor season for Thomas. The race was won in 46.17 by Tony Van Diepen from The Netherlands last year’s European Indoor bronze medallist, with triple World Champion over the distance Pavel Maslak from Czech Republic second in 46.28, so Thomas in very good company ,Grace Furlong from Waterford was 6th in the long jump and Niamh Whelan Ferrybank did not progress from the heats of the 60.In Athlone on Saturday last at the Irish University Indoor Championships athletes from Waterford clubs who collected medals were Yuri Kanash 1 st in pole vault, David Mc Glynn 2nd 3000 m and Grace Furlong 2nd triple jump, the former competes in club competitions with West Waterford and the latter two with Waterford AC .
Vikings got a good look to tie the game and send it to a second period of overtime but it was not to be and Mathews took the points. Having being behind for most of the game a fantastic defensive display in the final quarter allowed WIT Vikings take the lead in the game for the first time with three minutes remaining. A basket from Pepper and a converted free throw from Grassey put the home side three in front with 14 seconds left but an outrageous three pointer from US player Pugh with 2 second on the clock tied the game and it went to 5 minutes overtime. Having gone through the disappointment of losing out in an overtime game on the Saturday night WIT Vikings
had little time to recover as it was back to Carrickpherish on Sunday for a 3 pm tip-off against Limerick Celtics. While Vikings had come through a very tough encounter the previous night Celtics had an easy win at home over Portlaoise Panthers Vikings edged the first period 18 points to 15 with two big threes from Grassey the pick of the scorers. Celtics had the game level by half time at 38 points each with Vikings finding it next to impossible to hold one of the league’s top scorers American Kevin Oberweiser in check. There was nothing between the teams as the second half got under way but after five minutes the efforts of the night before started to show
on the Viking players. Lapses on the defensive end and missed opportunities on the other and the Limerick team got control of the game. Oberweiser in particular hit a number of outrageous three pointers to give Celtics had a seven-point lead going into the final quarter. Vikings made a big effort to get back into the game but it was a step too far, each time they seamed to be making inroads, Oberweiser in particular hit back, by the end of the game the American had 51 of the Celtics total to his name. This coming Saturday WIT Vikings are home again when they take on local rival’s IT Carlow in the WIT Arena, tipoff 7PM.

In Loving Memory
1st Anniversary Mary FITZPATRICK
Unseen and unheard but always near, So loved, so missed, so very dear
Birthday Remembrance Margaret Drohan
5th Anniversary Edward (Eddie) walsh
26th Anniversary Carmel O’connell
11th & 10th Anniversaries LILY & THOMAS DOYLE
31st Anniversary James McCarthy FITZPATRICK (née Kennedy) Late of Ballygurteen, Bansha, Co. Tipperary, London and Hillview, Waterford, deceased on February 24th 2019. Predeceased by her husband Ultan, sister Lily, brother Tom, nephew Declan and cousin Jane .
In loving memory of Elizabeth (Betty) Power, late of College Street, Rice Park whose 3rd anniversary occurs on the 17th of February and whose birthday occurs on the 1st of March. God looked around his garden And saw an empty space, He then looked down from Heaven, And saw your tired face, He wrapped his arms around you, And whispered Come to rest, His garden must be beautiful Mam, Because He only takes the best. - From your son John Have you ever lost a mother, That meant the world to you, One you loved so dearly, And miss her like I do, Have you ever had a heartache, Or ever felt the pain, Or shed a thousand tears, That drop like falling rain, If you’ve never had that feeling, Then I pray you never do, Because when Mam went to Heaven, A part of me went too. - Never forgotten by Teras, Derek, Jessica & Georgia If roses grow in Heaven Lord, Please pick a bunch for me, Place them in my Nanny’s arms, And tell her they are from me, Tell her I love and miss her, And when she turns to smile, Place a kiss upon her cheek, And hold her for a while, Because remembering her is easy, I do it every day, But there is an ache within my heart, That will never go away.
