Families on alert for ‘dognappers’ ALARM at an increase in the theft of pet dogs prompted a protest in Waterford this week. Pet owners marched from Ballybricken calling for harsher punishments for dog thieves.. They carried a banner saying: “It’s time to care for our animals and treat them as members of our family”. The demonstration was organised by a group called ‘Pet Theft Awareness Waterford’. following a spate of thefts here and across the country. Some pets have been stolen from gardens and there are reports of others being snatched while walking with their owners. The Department of Justice says ‘dognapping’ has soared by 50 per cent in the last two years and the problem appears to have grown during the Covid-19 crisis. Some 120 dogs have been reported stolen in the first six months of 2020. Waterford is one of the worsthit counties along with Dublin, Kildare, Cork and Tipperary .

Craig Power, Store Manager of Petmania Waterford, has some advice for worried owners. *Microchip your dog. Ensure that it is registered with the national database and that you have a Microchipping Certificate. *Get a collar and name tag. This is one of the quickest ways to reunite a family with a lost pet. *Invest in a good strong lead and harness and collar that fit well, for when your dog is out and about – this will help avoid the dog slipping away. *Spend time training your dog. Basic skills such as returning when called, ‘heel’ and ‘stop’ will keep pets in check when visiting a dog-park. *Invest in a safe secure dogrun with a sturdy lock for periods of long absence. “It is very distressing to lose a dog,” said Craig. “They are very much part of the family and the loss of a pet in sinister circumstances is even more devastating.”
