Rail riddle: Who’ll pay for new station? CONFLICTING statements have cast doubt on the development of a new railway station and transport hub for Waterford city. Several local politicians had signalled that the Government was willing to fund the project which is crucial to the North Quays development. But the mood of optimism was dampened by a spokesperson for the Department of Local Government who said bluntly: “No decisions have been made.” The minister, Eoghan Murphy,, then distanced himself from the funding pledge. He told RTE that the Government was committed to the project but must ensure “the funding lines are in place”. The conflict appears to have arisen from the involvement of three separate government departments. Independent TD and Minister of State John Halligan confirmed that negotiations have been taking place with

the departments of Transport and Finance. But TDs have also been meeting Mr Murphy. Sinn Féin deputy David Cullinane told WLR: “Eoghan Murphy said his Department will fund the full allocation which is €39 million. It’s great news for Waterford.” Fianna Fáil TD Mary Butler Tweeted that there had been “positive news” from Mr Murphy. Mr Halligan said negotiations were still taking place with the departments of Transport and Finance but it had “now been confirmed” that the money would be made available for the new train station, adding that this was a big step towards the development of the North Quays. The new transport hub is a key element in the plan by a Saudi Arabian-based development company for a commercial, retail and residential project linking the North Quays and the city centre. IRELAND’S biggest and best Christmas festival will return to Waterford on Saturday, November 23. Santa will be on hand to help Mayor John Pratt turn on the city’s Christmas lights at 5pm and get Winterval under way. “As Ireland’s Christmas capital, Waterford city will be transformed into a magical winter wonderland with over 60 free and ticketed events on offer every weekend right up to 23 December,” said festival director, Tommie Ryan.

“Visitors will be enchanted by the brand-new interactive Wizards + Dragons exhibition at Waterford City Hall and the magical Santa’s Grotto experience in Choristers Hall. “Pop your skates on and take to the 600sqm of real ice at Winterval On Ice on Bolton Street. “If it is the perfect Christmas gift you are after, then come on down to the Garter Lane Christmas Crafts Fair or the Christmas markets and pop-up shops at Arundel Square and

Rail hub riddle: who’ll pay for move? From front page It involves moving the existing rail station along the quay to link it with the bus service and put it at the heart of the regeneration development. Following Mr Cullinane’s interview on WLR, Waterford Chamber issued a statement welcoming the funding. Waterford Chamber CEO Gerald Hurley, said: “We have had many assurances from Government that they are committed to the North Quays since it was designated an SDZ. However, now we are starting to hear some real figures, which is certainly encouraging. “There is no denying the North Quays will be a game changer for Waterford but an essential component of that was the relocation of Plunkett Station. “With the multi annual investment from the Urban Regeneration Fund and now the commitment to the train station, we can remain confident of delivery.”

City is the bargain basement for housing

WATERFORD has the lowest house prices of any city, new figures show. The average price of a house in the city is €170,00, according to the Central Statistics Office. In Dublin the “median price” stood at €368,000 by the end of September. In Cork city, the median price paid was €242,000. In Limerick it was €197,500. Nationally, the average price was €255,000. The rate of price increase has been falling everywhere and in Dublin the average price paid has dropped slightly, the CSE figures show. The slow-down in inflation has been attributed to an increase in the supply of apartments and houses. In the third quarter of 2019, there were 5,667 new dwellings completed, up 22% from 2018. There was an 81.1% increase in apartment completions compared to the same period in 2018. The data also shows in the first three-quarters of 2019 there were 14,764 new dwelling completions. This is a 18.0% increase on the same period of 2018. Apartment supply in Waterford, however, has been very slow. Only nine apartments were completed in the year to the end of September.

A total of 307 new-builds were completed in Waterford, a 16.7% increase on the same period last year. Of these, 89 were one-off houses, not in a development. RENTS: The mayor of Waterford, Cllr. John Pratt, has called for a rent freeze. He was responding to the Irish Rental Price Report by Daft.ie which showed that in the past year rents in Waterford county have risen 11.5% and 5.5% in Waterford city. The average rent in Waterford county is now €962 and €1007 in Waterford city. Cllr Pratt said renters in Waterford were now paying extortionate amounts of their income on renting their home. “After more than three years, it is clear that this Government has failed the people of Waterford once again in managing the rental crisis and providing enough homes for families,” he said. “Before rents increase even further, I am calling on this Government to freeze rents across the country and to introduce maximum rents on a regional basis until enough homes have been built to tackle the housing crisis we have been living with for the past three years.”

Seascapes shape work of craft-maker Marie

TWO Waterford artisan makers will be in the spotlight at the Gifted Craft and Design Fair in Cork. Marie Ronayne, from Ardmore, is an artisan jeweller and Adele Stanley, from Mahon

Bridge, is a ceramist. Marie has a huge love for the sea and gives part of the proceeds of her sales to the RNLI. The waters at Ardmore play a huge inspirational part in both her work and social life, and

every morning, whatever the weather, she meets friends for a swim. However, Marie is all too aware of the dangers that the sea can pose. “I was quite young when I went out fishing with my dad, brother and a few friends and we were quite far from the shore when the engine failed,”she said. “You are talking about 45 years ago so there were no mobile phones back then. Dad raised a red flag and my mother noticed it from the beach and alerted the RNLI who came to rescue us.” Marie prides herself on using fair trade materials and is constantly trying to source more sustainable products for use in her workshop. Adele has recently embarked on a new style of simplicity in her work. Each piece is cast using liquid porcelain, and once the piece is dried and finished, it is painted with layers of coloured slips to create a vivid surface. Gifted Craft and Design Fair and Art Source Cork take place at the Cit Hall Cork from November 29 to December 1. Full details at giftedcork.ie

Mayor pays a visit to oldest carer

PAULINE Mhic Parthalán is Waterford’s Carer of the Year and, at the age of 92, probably the oldest carer in Ireland. Waterford’s Mayor, Cllr. John Pratt, recently visited Pauline at her home in An Rinn where she cares for her son, Joe. “I deeply admire the work ongoing every day of the year across Waterford city and county by carers and I felt it was important that the office of mayor be associated with Pauline’s achievement – as much for

recognition for everyone involved in caring, as saying a particular go raibh maith agus comhgháirdeachas,”said Cllr Pratt. Pauline was born in An Rinn in 1928 when, as she explained to the Cllr Pratt, her neighbour and grandaunt, Margaret Power, was married to the then Mayor of Waterford city, Edward Walsh. She trained as a nurse and served in Dublin and New York where she met her husband Joe McPartland, and

returned with him to his native Belfast. Their son was diagnosed with MS, and following her husband’s death, Pauline returned to An Rinn in 2004 to care for Joe Jnr. She was recently honoured with the Netwatch Waterford Carer of the Year Award, presented to her by Irish rugby legend and All Ireland winning Kerry footballer Mick Galwey at a special ceremony in Waterford’s Garter Lane Arts Centre.

f you are looking to protect your family from the financial effects of your death - then start here. The death of a breadwinner in a family can be financially catastrophic. At the ages people are when they start their families, the cost of insuring against a premature death is very small. Taking out life insurance should be a no-brainer but many people who need life cover, simply do not have it. The reasons why people do or do not have life insurance are many and humans are not purely rational when it comes to financial decisions. Studies show that while most people agree they need life insurance, they just don’t seem to be able to get around to it. One way to overcome this procrastination is to think about how good you will feel just to get this niggle out of the way. People struggle to know what is the right amount of cover they should have. Life cover is designed to provide a family with some or all

er, the benefit can be paid out as a regular income payment over many years, especially for those worried about their ability to manage their financial affairs well. The majority of people have protection, think of serpublic vants and employees of large multi-national companies who typically benefit from very generous protection packages as part of their conditions of employment. Those missing out on these essential benefits include employees of some smaller businesses and the self-employed. Financial advice involves focussing on your goals like children’s education, retiring comfortably, etc., and a key part of any financial planning strategy is to protect what you already have by ensuring that if you are not around, the family’s financial situation will at least be protected.

of the income lost due to the death of a breadwinner. This can be calculated by looking at the total annual ongoing expenses the family will need to cover, less any social benefits or income from other sources and the difference is the amount of income that needs to be replaced. THE BATTLE OF STALINGRAD There is no question that the Battle of Stalingrad was the most important battle of the Second World War. Following on from that there is very little about that Battle that is any way new. All the facts are known, there have been numberless books, both fiction and factual written about it as well as numerous documentaries and films about all aspects of the war. Where this particular documentary differs is in the way in which it includes the manner in which Soviet women were an intrinsic part of the Battle of Stalingrad. Over 1 million Soviet women fought during the Second World War. They were soldiers, fighter pilots, tank drivers and even if they were deployed in an ancillary role they were always in the thick of the fighting. If you were a Soviet nurse or doctor you didn’t stay in a field hospital to the rear of the fighting you had to go out onto the battlefield and drag back the wounded to be treated. For the Germans who were brought up on the Nazi ideology of a woman’s role being ‘Children, Church and Kitchen’ it was all very alarming. There was one further role that women had in the Battle of Stalingrad and that was as snipers. Due to the close combat that was forced on both sides during the battle, the role of snipers was huge in Stalingrad. It was found by the Soviets that women were ideally suited to be snipers, they had patience and staying power, much more so than their male counterparts. This is a fascinating documentary on the Battle of Stalingrad that proves that just when you thought there was nothing new to say on a subject there is always something new to say.

Goggle Box

INGRID GOES WEST This comedy of modern manners starts dark and goes darker still. It opens up around a wedding which Ingrid isn’t invited to but is obsessively following on Instagram. Then you realize that she is just outside the wedding venue. She storms in, screaming profanities and proceeds to Mace the bride in the face. Unsurprisingly Ingrid gets sent to the Psych ward. When she gets out she develops a new obsession over the perfect life of a woman in Los Angeles and with an inheritance from her mother goes in search of her. Bit by bit she insinuates herself into the woman’s life. However the more she finds out the more she realizes that the ‘perfect’ life the woman has is in fact a lie. Naturally it all ends very badly. Aubrey Plaza as Ingrid is excellent and this satire on Insta life and lies is very timely.

Expansion of research hub is boost for region

A RECENT €2.5m investment by Enterprise Ireland into the research and innovation hub at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) has been hailed as a key economic driver for the South-East region. It led to a 1,000 sqm extension of ArcLabs hub, opened last week by Minister of State John Halligan. The hub houses 30 start-ups, early-stage companies and entrepreneurs. The highly successful New Frontiers Programme and the NDRC at ArcLabs Accelerator Programme are also run from the centre. The extension, funded by Enterprise Ireland, will enable the institute to double its capacity to support technology start-ups in the South East and represents an important next step in the WIT’s plans for establishing an entrepreneurial platform that will accelerate economic development and position the region as a leader in the digital economy. At the opening, Martin Corkery,

Regional Director of Enterprise Ireland, said helping regionally based businesses expand in overseas markets was a core objective of Enterprise Ireland. “Our partnership with Waterford Institute of Technology at ArcLabs continues to be an essential element of our overarching strategy to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in the South East region,” he said. ArcLabs Manager, Dr Aisling O’Neill, described Enterprise Ireland’s investment as pivotal. “We are so grateful for this support from Enterprise Ireland in the South East which has enabled us to double our incubation capacity in our West campus site, enabling us to increase our impact in supporting entrepreneurship in the region,” she said “ We look forward to continuing to foster our relationship with Enterprise Ireland which is instrumental to realising the ambition of ArcLabs to support a truly sustainable regional economy in South East Ireland.”

Council plans to plant more trees

WATERFORD Council is working on a plan to plant more trees. The proposal for a Tree Management Plan came from Sinn Féin councillor Conor D. McGuinness. “My intention is for a comprehensive plan to be put in place that identifies opportunities for planting trees on council property,” he explained. There will be ambitious targets for planting trees in existing estates and new housing developments, and a partnership approach with community groups and the private sector. A Waterford man, meanwhile, has been giving away 1,000 trees to help tackle climate change. Tree surgeon Dean O’Neill, known as The Green Man, gave away the trees as part of Science Week. “I think everybody can do their part to tackle climate change; planting a tree is just a small part of it but it’s a big part on a wider scale,” he said.

A COUNCILLOR has accused the local authority of being “the evictor in chief” of tenants seeking Housing Assistance Payments (HAP). Councillor Eamon Quinlan said payments had been “unilaterally cancelled” by Waterford City and County Council leaving many tenants in arrears and facing eviction. The council inspects houses before approving HAP and may insist on remedial work being carried out. Cllr Quinlan said that, in some cases, when landlords did not do the work, the council had been cancelling the payment, forcing the tenants to seek other accommodation. “Calls to prosecute landlords that continue to ignore such work orders have long been ignored by the executive as a costly and drawn out process that rarely works and often

sours relations for the family,” said the Fianna Fáil councillor. He said he had been contacted recently by HAP-scheme families living in sub standard accommodation. “Instead of having the council intervene to protect them and pursue the landlord, they received letters telling them that the HAP had been unilaterally cancelled by the council. They are now in arrears with their landlord and they have to find alternative accommodation.” Cllr Quinlan said the cancellations came as a “massive out of the blue shock” to the families. “They are left scrambling trying to get a new house within literally a week or two before the landlords kick them out,” he said in a statement. “From the landlord’s point of view, the council has suddenly cancelled the contract and they

now have non paying tenants.” Cllr Quinlan raised the issue last week at a meeting of the council. He was told that families in this situation can avail of the HAP placement programme where council staff will actively assist them in finding new property to rent. Cllr Quinlan said this was “a huge policy change” that had not been approved by councillors. He said the HAP placement programme was meant for homeless people or people on the verge of homelessness. “By adding all these extra families, we are adding an overwhelming work load onto our staff in this programme and decreasing its effectiveness. The council has become the chief force in evictions across Waterford. This callous, short sighted and counterproductive policy must be ended immediately.”

‘Why I fought with the Kurds in Syria’

Here we go again

W

ith one of the wettest and coldest weeks of the year so far just over it is timely that the Government has just come out heralding a big new initiative concerning it’s plans for hospitals over the Winter period. For those with a short memory we will soon be into a period where every day there will be horror stories of people on hospital trolleys and epoch making waiting times in Irish hospitals as the health service tries to cope with the increased demand that Winter always brings. Each year the Government, no matter of what political stripe, tries to get ahead of the story by putting in place new measures that will ensure that for once there won’t be horrendous waiting times and aged patients on trolleys in hallways on their watch. This year the Government has come out with a plan that it will spend 26 million Euro to ensure that it will get patients out of hospital as soon as possible by ensuring that they have all the provisions that they need at home. The logic of this is that if you free up beds at one end of the chain that you will have people, hopefully, moving through the system in a more efficient manner which will make the whole process work more smoothly. This of course makes perfect sense. In theory. However there are so many variables that haven’t been taken into account that it is entirely feasible that we will be facing yet more ominous headlines about the Health system as the Winter months progress. The one factor that this or indeed any Government is loathe to talk about or face up to is that the HSE has been massively underfunded for years - a legacy of the years of austerity. Also the HSE is mired down in a bog of bureaucracy and could well do with a complete overhaul. However these are two things that it seems no Government is willing to tackle - it would be an almost Sisyphean task. No sooner have you one thing half-way right then your attention is dragged away to put fires out somewhere else. It is not only the nature of politics but the nature of the electorate to want something done about the latest headline grabbing story. It is good that this Government is putting some money into trying to alleviate the problems that will afflict hospitals over the coming months. It might even work to some extent but it really is the case of the little child putting it’s finger into a dam that is just about to burst it’s banks.

Our View

Danes aim to score winner in Waterford AN international retail chain will be opening a new store in Waterford city next year. Danish chain Jysk, which sells household goods such as mattresses, furniture and interior décor, is expected to open by March 2020 at Unit 3/4 Boland’s Retail Park on the Cork Road. Jysk (pronounced ‘yusk’) is the largest Danish retailer operating internationally. It has more than 2,500 stores in 50 countries and over 22,000 employees. Approximately 10 full-time positions will be created by the opening of the Waterford store. Barry & John Murphy

MORGAN Mansfield, from Co Waterford, travelled to war-torn Syria in 2017 and saw active service in the fight against Isis, the so-called Islamic state. His story has been told in a documentary film, Óglach Rojava, which will be given a special showing in Dungarvan on Saturday, November 30. Morgan, from An Sean Phobal, fought with Kurdish forces in defence of Kurdish cities and communities. He will introduce the screening and answer questions afterwards. The screening takes place at 7pm in Kirby Central Studio, 21 Mary Street, Dungarvan. A number of Irish paramedics and medical personnel are active in Syria at the moment working with Kurdish humanitarian organisations in the wake of the Turkish invasion last month. This event will raise funds to support their work and to help provide essential equipment and material to the Kurdish Red Crescent. All are welcome to see this first hand account of the situation in Syria and the Kurdish territories.

Auctioneers played an important role in sourcing this high profile tenant . “I am delighted to have played a key role in sourcing such a high profile retailer for Waterford city and I wish them the very best of luck with the store,” said Barry. “I feel it shows a good sign of confidence in Waterford that this global homewares brand have chosen it as the location for their first South East store. I have no doubt they will thrive in such a prominent city location with excellent parking.” Jysk (meaning ‘Jutlandic’) was founded by Lars Larsen, in the Danish city of Aarhus in 1979.

We’ll miss RTE when it’s gone

A

lot of important GAA club matches have been played in recent weeks, county and provincial finals for both hurling and football. RTE radio has covered them all and RTE television has shown extracts from many of them. RTE doesn’t get much thanks for this service and that, I suppose, is fair enough. It’s a national broadcaster doing its job. But have no doubt, if RTE doesn’t do this job, nobody else will. Nobody else would have covered the Irish women’s soccer team playing a home match against Ukraine and an away match against Greece. Nobody else would have covered the hockey team’s double-header with Canada. Somebody else would have covered Shane Lowry’s victory in the British Open but nobody else would have gone to Offaly to celebrate with Shane’s neighbours and meet his remarkable grandmother.

No other broadcaster would have been in Skibbereen to mark the achievements of the O’Donovan brothers or in Bray to rejoice with friends of Katie Taylor. It is not just in matters of sport that we expect RTE to be our eyes and ears. We want it in Brussels, because, if it wasn’t there, we would be getting our EU reports through the Brexit-obsessed filter of British broadcasting. We want it in Washington, because, while anyone could report facts from the US, we want someone who can sort the facts from the fiction and give them to us with an Irish interpretation. At home, we expect RTE to give copious and balanced coverage to elections, budgets, referendums - events which absorb the nation’s interest. And we also expect it to cover matters in which there is not much interest at all, such as party conferences and presidential inaugurations. Even people who don’t watch these things expect them to be covered.

We expect RTE to operate regional studios, provide broadcasting in the Irish language and make some intelligent programmes for children. And oh, while you’re at it lads, we wouldn’t mind a bit of home-grown drama and a few decent Irish comedies. We expect these services from our national broadcaster. Nobody provides them for Northern Ireland, or Scotland, or Wales. Or, for that matter, the Avignon province of France or the Andalucia district of Spain. These are all regions and are treated as such by their national broadcasters. Ireland is an independent nation and to make that status meaningful we need to preserve an independent broadcasting voice. And we need to pay for it. To live within its budget, RTE is having to cut back drastically. It has received very little sympathy from politicians, whose shortcomings are often exposed by the broadcaster. And its plight has been met with a degree of schadenfreude by national newspapers who

have tended to see Montrose as a cosseted and elitist outfit, a competitor with the unfair advantages of government bailouts and a licence fee. There is some truth in that view, but the injustice to newspapers will not be rectified by penalising RTE. In any case, I fear it is too late to save our national press. Newspapers once provided some of the services discussed here. They were also a forum for national debate but television and radio are now where our national debates are conducted - there, and on the unstructured platforms of social media. People have stopped reading national newspapers, partly because, at a time when the internet appears to provide all things free of charge, they are unwilling to pay for them. It’s use them or lose them - and soon we will have lost them. We’ll lose RTE, too, if we are not prepared to pay for it. It will be too late to mourn when it’s gone. - Michael Wolsey

christmasgiftguide

Eat... drink... and be merry In the hectic run up to Christmas, with all the planning and decorating and list making and shopping and wrapping etc., it’s very easy for something and sometimes, some one, to slip your mind. No doubt you have that one person who is a little difficult to buy for (don’t we all!). Someone who seems to have everything they want already. This is invariably the person you leave to the end of your shopping list waiting for divine inspriation as to what to get them as a gift. Instead of wracking your brain there is a gift that never fails to delight... the gift of a voucher for a meal in a top local restaurant. Hey, we all like to eat! And with the restaurants we have locally you are totally spoiled for choice. The beauty of giving (or indeed receiving) a gift voucher for a meal at a local restaurant is that you are giving the

recipient an experience, and it’s something they can then explore themselves. If you know they have a favourite dining spot that helps, but it’s great to give a friend the chance to try a new spot, a new cuisine, a new flavour if you will. Handing someone a physical present,

the beauty of giving a gift voucher for a restaurant is that you are giving the recipient an experience

whether it be a watch, scarf, tie or a book, there is always a chance that it won’t be to their taste. But in giving a restaurant voucher, they can make their own choices, from when they go, to who they bring to what they eat and drink. It could be that they choose to invite you along! Bonus! And just like some of those clever folk do, the ones who are prepared for every eventuality, the ones who always have spare batteries for the kid’s toys, the ones who always have an extra bottle of wine or box of chocolates or scented candle wrapped and placed under the tree as a present for an unexpected (or univited!) guest, you could have a gift voucher for a local restaurant put aside in case you’re similarly blindsided. If it’s not called into use, you have yourself a night out at a restaurant you have personally chosen! Happy Christmas to you!

Year of the Salmon

Salmon (Salmo salar) (Image Wikicommons) Hands up who knows that 2019 is the International Year of the Salmon? Well before the year ends let’s take a closer look at this iconic species which is engrained in the Irish psyche and culture. Between November and March female salmon (Salmo salar) lay their eggs in shallow depressions in gravel on the riverbed known as redds. Christmas Day is considered the peak of this egg laying. These eggs hatch into larvae called alevins and shelter in the gravel before beginning to emerge from the 1st April as juveniles known as parr. The parr can spend one to three years in the river of their birth feeding on freshwater invertebrates. The parr, having reached a certain size, begin to transform into smolt. Their gills and kidneys change to allow them to process salt-water. They gradually become less tolerant of freshwater and make their way downstream towards the ocean. The smolts lose the spots and finger markings of parr and very silvery in colour. These smolt then migrate to feeding grounds in the Norwegian Sea and as far as the coast of Greenland. Here they will stay until they reach maturity. Salmon that reach maturity after one year are called grilse whereas those that take several years to reach maturity are know as springers. These salmon, showing incredible homing instincts, migrate back to the rivers of their birth to spawn. While not currently endangered on a European or global basis, salmon numbers are declining rapidly. For every 100 salmon that leave our rivers for the sea, less than 5 are now returning. That represents a decline of 70% in 25 years. The Atlantic Salmon Trust (AST) has launched the Missing Salmon Project to tag smolts to find out their migration pathways and from there establish what is happening to them and what actions can be taken to increase survival.

29th Anniversary CHRIS O’KEEFFE

Treasured memories of my loving mother Catherine Halligan, 84 Upper Yellow Road, whose birthday occurs on 28th November. Mass offered at St. Pauls Church on November 24th on 11:30am. My mother kept a garden, A garden of the heart, She planted all the good things, That gave my life a start, She turned me to the sunshine, And encouraged me to dream, Fostering and nurturing the seeds of self-esteem. And when the winds and rain came, She protected me enough, But not too much, She knew I’d need to stand up strong and tough. Her constant good example, Always taught me right from wrong, Markers for my pathway, To last my whole life long. I am my mother’s garden, I am her legacy, And I hope today she feels the love reflected back from me. - Loved and missed by your daughter Mary and family and son Thomas and family.

o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore of you to obtain for me my request....(Pause) The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so you are the saint of miracles. O gentle and loving St Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, intercede for me and whisper my prayer into the ear of the sweet Infant Jesus who loved to linger in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will be yours. P.G.

In loving memory of Chris O’Keeffe, late of 71 Rice Park, whose anniversary occurs on November 18th. Your life was love and labour, Your love for your family true, You did your best for all of us, We will always remember you. - Missed always, son Derrick, Sharon, Evan, Daniel and Lydia

Please Note The deadline for inclusion in the Memoriam Pages is: 4pm on the Friday prior to publication. We cannot guarantee inclusion for memorials submitted after this.

Showjumper Moloney takes second Park Award

Pierce Flynn, Park Hotel presenting the October Sportstar Award to Louise Moloney who accepted it on behalf of her Son, Peter Moloney. Photo Sean Byrne The sport of showjumping was honoured for the 23rd time at the Park Hotel Waterford Sports Star Awards this week as Colligan’s Peter Moloney picked up his second monthly award. Peter was part of the four man Irish team, along with Cian O’Connor, Paul O’Shea and Darragh Kenny that won the €1.25m Longines FEI Nations Cup World Final in Barcelona. This wonderful win, in which Moloney played a key role, means that for the first time ever Ireland will be represented at the Olympic Games by three equestrian teams – Showjumping, Eventing and Dressage. It’s been a great season for Peter and his mount Chianti’s Champion who is owned by HRH Princess Haya’s Team Harmony stable but this was without doubt his crowning glory. Peter, who is based in Eng-

land, was unable to attend the lunch at the Park Hotel but he was represented by his mother Louise and family and friends. Accepting the award on Peter’s behalf, Louise Moloney said, “Peter has asked me to thank the Park Hotel for picking him as the October Park Award winner. It was a fantastic achievement as they qualified for the Olympics and also won the Nations Cup Final and he really does appreciate this award. It’s his second time winning this award, the first time was when he was 16 for his achievements as a pony rider. It’s great to win any award but especially when it’s a local award. He’s thrilled.” Pierce Flynn, proprietor, presented Louise with Peter’s award while Kieran O’Connor represented the adjudicating panel.

Weekend wins for Wildcats

Waterford Wildcats had two big wins over the past weekend. The first of these was on Friday night last when they proved too good for their great Cork rivals Glanmire on a score line of 81-52 in the National U/20 Cup quarter final. Wildcats will face Portlaoise Panthers in the semi final inmid January. The other semi final is between Ulster Queens and Dublin’s Templeogue BC. This Wildcats outfit fancy their chances of going all the way in this competition and they have every reason to be confident considering the ease of their victory over Glanmire. For many of the players their 1 point loss in last years U/18

| 35

Cup final to Liffey Celtics really hurt but it may also give them the focus and drive to take home the silverware this time round. 24 hours later 4 of the U/20 team linked up with their Super League team mates for a road trip to Kildare to face reigning champions Liffey Celtics and came away with a huge win 80 -71. The perfect result for Wildcats as they were coming off back to back losses . Now with 4 wins from 7 games they have worked their way up to the top half of the league table . Jazz Walker was back to her best with a game high 28 points, Maria Palarino netted 18 while Steph O’Shea totalled 14.

Blues supremo Lee Power set to stay on After a turbulent 2019 season Waterford FC owner Lee Power has committed himself to continue his investment with the Blues. Many fans felt that after the Europa League debacle that Power might walk away after suffering considerable losses over the last 3 seasons. This came to the fore when UEFA informed the FAI that under the rules of European competition one of their clubs namely Waterford FC of the SSC Airtricity Premier League did not meet the criteria set down, therefore the club mentioned would not be allowed take part in the Europa League and would be replaced by St. Patricks Athletic. This was a huge set back to the finances of the club and a huge blow to Mr. Power himself and his investment. The loss of that substantial revenue from European football would be felt throughout the club and it was the budget of first team manager Alan Reynolds that would take the biggest hit. The manager was informed

Waterford FC owner Lee Power with Blues manager Alan Reynolds in happier times at the RSC. in mid season that many of the top earners in his squad who be moved on. This was a major blow to Rennie and to the attendances at the RSC, to his credit the manager rebuilt the squad and despite coming under severe pressure

and falling gate recites Alan Reynolds pulled off a miracle to keep the Blues in the Premier League. With the new season due to get underway in February 2020 the Blues will revert from a full time situation to part time foot-

ball and once more the wage budget will again be cut. Mr Power is due in Waterford sometime next week to have talks with the manager. However with only one player Will Fitzgerald on the books at the moment Alan Reynolds has asked for time to consider his position at the club. Alan Reynolds is an ambitious young coach and as he stated recently ‘If we are not planning to have a real go next season and push on, then I don’t think I fancy it’. It is understood that Mr. Power who is also owner of high flying Swindon Town who are flying high in the English League 2 is seeking financial assistance in both Ireland and England but any rumour that former CEO of the FAI John Delaney was interested in joining Waterford FC was shot down by Power as he said ‘ There is no chance of that situation developing’. The fans will be glad to hear that season ticket prices will be frozen for season 2020 and early bird prices with a reduction will be available up to the 10th of December.

Going for Munster glory

A huge weekend ahead for the Waterford Senior, Intermediate and Junior hurling County champions. The reigning senior Provincial kingpins, Ballygunner, will put their title on the line in Pairc Ui Chaoimh when they face Tipperary winners Borris-Ileigh. The Premier outfit who collected their first title in 33 years will be rank outsiders against a Ballygunner team who have been hugely impressive thus far. Collecting their sixth by the domestic Villager title in a row, the Gunners carry a wealth of experience and manager Darragh O’Sullivan has also successfully integrated youth into the side. Goalkeeper Stephen O’Keeffe will be fronted by a secure defence marshalled by Philip Mahony and Barry Coughlan. Number three Ian Kenny and wingback Conor Sheahan have certainly also taken

GAA

the eye this year. The experienced Shane O’Sullivan along with youthful Michael Mahony will run the midfield engine while, upfront Pauric Mahony. Peter Hogan, Paddy Leavy and the exciting Dessie Hutchinson will test the Borris-Ileigh defence.

WHAT OF THE TIPPERARY CHAMPIONS There is no denying that the Tipperary kingpins will be another huge challenge for Ballygunner. In their semi-final they had an impressive (1-17/3-8) win over Glen Rovers(Cork). Full back Paddy Stapleton and centreback Brendan Maher will be charged with shoring up the defence denying scoring oportunities to the lethal Ballygunner attack. However the year they have been very clinical in front of goal with Conor Kenny, Kevin Maher, Jerry Kelly and James Devaney all making the scoresheet. On present form I can only see a Ballygunner win with

perhaps a few points to spare

BALLYSAGGART IN DUNGARVAN Waterford Intermediate champions Ballysaggart will be hoping to continue their fine form of 2019 as they face Cork champions Fr O’Neills in Dungarvan. Backboned by the Bennetts, Kieran, Stephen, Shane and Kyle along with Kieran Fennessy, Chris O’Gorman and Kenneth Cashel the Waterford side have had a terrific year. The priority of winning senior status for 2019 achieved, the club is now on the verge of taking a Provincial crown. Wins over Causeway (Kerry) and Sean Treacy’s (Tipperary) confirmed the team in great order. Opponents Fr. O’Neills will pose a huge obstacle for Ballysaggart. An impressive win in the Cork domestic championship followed by an equally impressive win over Broadford (Clare) in the semi-final will see them full of confidence. Among their fifteen will be midfielders Joe Millerick and Kevin

O’Sullivan along with the former underage star Declan Dalton.

UPMC is Ashbourne Cup Weekend sponsor UPMC Whitfield Hospital in Waterford has been announced as the 2020 sponsor of the CCAO Third Level Camogie Ashbourne Cup Weekend, which takes place in conjunction with the WIT Vikings GAA Club on 14th16th February 2020 at the WIT Arena. The UPMC Ashbourne Cup Weekend will involve fourteen Third Level college teams from across the country competing in the Ashbourne, Purcell, Fr. Meaghair and O’ Maolagain Cup competitions.will face up against Waterford. ST MARY’S AGAINST Waterford Junior Hurling Champions St Mary’s will take on Carrick Davins in the Provincial Junior Hurling semi-final on Saturday. A fantastic opportunity for the Deise lads with the winner to meet Russell Rovers of Cork.
