Yoga tutor hits back as bishop row grows

A WATERFORD yoga instructor has hit back at the Bishop of Waterford and Lismore, Alphonsus Cullinan, after the cleric wrote to schools across Waterford city and county warning against the teaching of yoga and mindfulness. In the letter, Bishop Cullinan said that “yoga is not of Christian origin” and was not suitable for a parish school setting “especially not during religious education time”. Speaking about mindfulness, he said that it has been practised in the Christian tradition since the beginning but “Christian mindfulness is not mindlessness but is meditation based on Christ, emptying the mind of everything unnecessary so that we become aware of the presence and love of Christ.” But Waterford yoga instructor John Stokes said that religious studies and spirituality “are not the same and should be kept separate”. “In an age where children are

really suffering from anxiety and stress we should embrace practices like yoga, meditation and mindfulness,” he said. “We should consider having an extra class added to the curriculum – maybe call it spirituality studies.” Mr Stokes said: “Yoga and mindfulness have been shown to improve both physical and mental health in school-age children. “Yoga improves balance, strength, endurance, and aerobic capacity in children,” he said. “They offer psychological benefits for children as well. A growing body of research has already shown that yoga can improve focus, memory, selfesteem, academic performance, and classroom behaviour, and can even reduce anxiety and stress in children.” The bishop then quoted a homily from Pope Francis in 2015 where he reminded people Continues next page

that “practices like yoga are not capable of opening our hearts up to God” The bishop quoted the Pope as having said: “You can take a million courses in spirituality, a million courses in yoga, zen and all these things but all of this will never be able to give you freedom.” However RTE radio’s Liveline was inundate on Monday last with callers telling Joe Duffy that the Bishop of Waterford had “misquoted” the Pontiff and taken him out of context. The majority of callers to the show, many from Waterford, were dismissive of the bishop’s remarks about yoga. In his letter, Bishop Cullinan concluded by asking teachers and principals to encourage children to “pray the Rosary” and help them spend time with Jesus in “adoration or in quiet meditation” in the classroom. A number of schools in Co Waterford contacted on the matter declined to comment.

More cash sees tech uni begin hire staff THE Technological University for the South East of Ireland (TUSEI) consortium has welcomed the announcement of higher education ‘landscape reform’ funding in support of the TUSEI project. Altogether €2 million in dedicated funding has been allocated to take the project to the next stage of development. A total of €11.8 million in funding was allocated to technological universities in a funding announcement from the Minister for Education and Skills Joe McHugh and Minister of State with responsibility for Higher Education Mary Mitchell O’Connor. President of IT Carlow Dr Patricia Mulcahy said the funding came at a critical time for the project. “It will enable us to move to the next stage in institutional change, the further mobilisation of our 1,900 staff, our 17,000 students and our many stakeholders in support of important integration activity. “This is an essential part of our journey towards a unitary multi-campus technological university of scale and impact within the regional, national and international context. We thank Minister McHugh and Minister Mitchell O’Connor for their continued support.” President of Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT), Professor Willie Donnelly, said the funding was an indication of confidence by Government in WIT and IT Carlow to de-

liver a university for the South East. “This funding allocation will allow us build on the momentum to date and accelerate the project to completion. Together with all our stakeholders across the region, we are impatient for the delivery of a much-needed university for the South East, a critical element in delivering on the Government’s ambitions for the region as set out in Project Ireland 2040 and absolutely essential to secure the economic future of the region.” This landscape funding follows the announcement in Budget 2020 of €90m. funding in support of Technological Universities for 2022. The funding allocated is earmarked for supporting the appointment of key personnel to manage and direct the TU project, specifically to complete the application process and oversee the validation of the application by an international review group. “The funding will also be used to support staff involvement and engagement in the process through a detailed change management project. “We are very clear in our planning that the staff of the two institutes have to be central to the future organisation. “After all, it is through the efforts of staff over decades that we are in a position to make a legitimate claim to be operating at university level,” Professor Donnelly said..

THE Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) announced the winners of its 2019 Energy Awards at a gala event which saw Waterford businesses Ashleigh Environmental and Flahavan’s take away prizes. Ashleigh Environmental, a CleanTech company developing innovative environmental and bioenergy solutions for the agriculture industry, took the Research and Innovation Award for their Biowave system. As part of the prize the company wins a €10,000 bursary which will be used to support the commercialisation of the

system. Flahavan’s, Ireland’s oldest family-owned business, won the SME Award. Flahavan’s has always prioritised sustainability. The oats for the company’s Progress Oatlets are sourced from local farmers within a 60-mile radius of the mill in Kilmacthomas. Flahavan’s has reduced the need for almost half a million litres of diesel per year as steam is produced from the burning of the oat husks. There were nine awards made. The company also has its own on-site wind and water turbines.

Deputy slams lack of mental health care

THE Sinn Féin TD for Waterford, David Cullinane, has criticised the Government for “its failure to properly address the practice of placing children in adult mental health service facilities in Waterford,”

saying that “this needs to stop as a matter of urgency and proper facilities opened”. “The mental health commission found that eight children were admitted to the Waterford adult mental health

service in 2018. Incredibly, it found that the compliance record for the service was 57% compared to 68% for 2017,” he said. “A report found that not all staff involved in the care of children had training in Children First age-appropriate facilities. Furthermore, a programme of activities was not available and child residents did not have access to ageappropriate advocacy services. “Other issues included parental consent, confidentiality and the requirement for each child to be individually risk assessed. “It found that residents’ general health needs were not monitored and assessed in line with their specific needs, that physical examinations were inadequate, that residents did not have access to a supply of appropriate emergency personal clothing. “ And, to add insult to injury, the centre was not clean, hygienic and free from offensive odours. How can children and adults with mental health difficulties be treated in that fashion? The Minister tried to say it was a managerial problem, when we all know this is about resources.””

McAlpine and his Fusiliers on our railway line ONE hundred and 50 years ago this year a 22-year -old Scottish bricklayer named Robert McAlpine – the man who was to build the Waterford-Rosslare Railway – seeing no future in working for a wage, sought and won his first contract, the repair of a mine chimney, for a fee of two pounds and nine shillings, about €2.80. This was quickly followed by the re-building of a wall, which paid three pounds and 15 shillings. In later life Robert claimed that, in his twenties, he was able to lay 2,000 bricks a day, ‘fed’ by two labourers. By 1883 he felt capable of building their first European factory, on a 43-acre site seven miles west of Glasgow, for the hugely successful American Singer Sewing Machine Company for a fee of £300,000. Two decades later, in addition

to its Scottish contracts, the firm of Robert McAlpine & Sons were also building the Waterford-Rosslare Railway in Ireland. Robert’s third son, Malcolm, oversaw its construction. His motor car was registered in the Irish Motor Directory of 1904 at an address given as ‘Balloughton House, Bannow, Co. Wexford’ – one of only 88 cars and 61 cycles listed for the county. During the lengthy construction of the Waterford-Rosslare Line McAlpine’s company built on contacts made then to attract a lot of Irish labour between the wars, hence the monicker McAlpine’s Fusiliers, made famous in the song by the late Ronnie Drew. A number of the Irish men rose to foreman and manager status and this rightly encouraged further Irish recruitment at

labourer and craftsman level. On one occasion, Welsh labourers on a McAlpine contract went on strike because they’d heard the Irish were receiving higher wages. The then Sir Malcolm called a mass meeting to address the strikers. With his Irish operators standing on the platform behind him, he told the strikers: “When you can operate the machinery, repair it, dismantle it, oversee its transport to the next site and erect it again, you’ll get more money. Until then, you can take it or leave it!” The firm giving the Irish ‘the start’ became legend: Britain’s construction industry, including John Laing and George Wimpey was then the largest single employer of Irish male migrant labour. The total stood at around 200,000 men in the 1960s.

reland’s population is growing, living longer and getting older. The number of people over 65 will jump from 1:8 to 1:6 by 2030 and the number of people over 85 will double. These demographics have considerable implications for the State and its ability to finance the State pension and other social spending. According to the National Risk Assessment 2019 report launched in August, the number of people eligible for the State pension will leap from 0.6 million at present to 1.4 million by 2055, while the ratio of workers to those in receipt of the State pension will more than halve to just 2.3:1.1 Only one in three people in the private sector have their own pension fund. Will those without a private pension be able to support themselves in retirement on just the State pension? Will the State be able to continue to maintain the value of the pension adjusting for inflation?

findings include: Key 43% of people with a private pension have no idea how much their pension fund is worth; more than 50% have no idea what their pension fund is invested in or are aware of the tax benefits available for pension savers. Almost 50% are worried about the adequacy of their retirement planning compared to 32% who are not. Yet when asked what their expected financial position will be at retirement age, 60% say they will either be comfortable or ok. The reality is that for 35% of them their financial position will be tight or struggling. With the pensions’ timebomb ticking and the age profile of the country rising, we all need to become more aware of the importance of a long-term savings and financial planning culture from an early age.

John Smiles Qualified Financial Advisor Aviva conducted an in-depth pension research and analysis seeking to establish how well people are prepared for such possible outcomes. Polling was conducted by RED C based on a representative sample of 2,000 adults aged 18+ in July 2019 The survey reveals a general lack of engagement with retirement planning by a significant proportion of the Irish public and evidence of a gender pension gap.

THE NAME OF THE ROSE If you are of a certain age, 45 and up, you will surely remember the film version of this new series that has started on BBC 2. Starring Sean Connery as an erudite monk who has to turn detective when a string of murders happen at a monastery where he and his acolyte are staying the movie was a huge success. Based on the book of the same name by Italian author Umberto Eco the novel has now been turned into a series starring John Turturro in the role made famous by Connery. Obviously with a series that is much longer in length than any film, more of what happens in the book is included so there is a lot about why Turturro is in this particular monastery and the machinations by the Pope behind the disputation that is happening between the Franciscan Order and those from other denominations. The Franciscans believe that since Christ didn’t have any possessions therefore his church shouldn’t either. Obviously from a Papal perspective this is a huge problem particularly when the church is beset by problems from all sides. The Pope is trapped in Avignon by the French King and can’t return to Rome, the Holy Roman Emperor is also pressing him on the demarcations between church and state. In the midst of all of this Turturro is at the monastery and even before he arrives there, one monk has been killed and another follows soon after. The production values for the piece are high and Turturro is a great actor and the inclusion of so many European actors of note is also a bonus. Without giving too much away one of the joys of the book and the film and now the series is the emphasis and importance it places on books and the ideas that they contain. This plays a central role in the unfolding drama of the piece. A great series well worth watching.

New art gallery opening

THE new Waterford Gallery of Art will open for its first public event at the forthcoming Imagine Arts Festival. On Saturday, October 26th from 3.30-4.30pm there will be a free tour of the new gallery at its premises on 31 and 32 O’Connell Street, guided by the curator of the wonderful works from the Municipal Collection, Dr Eimear O’Connor. An honorary member

of the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dr O’Connor will offer a highly informative tour and viewing of a selection of this collection in its new and permanent home, the first time that the collection will be housed together. There are many events on offer for the 18th annual Imagine Arts Festival including a Retrospective exhibition of Rosemary Higbee at GOMA Gallery.

Higbee was born in India in 1923. She moved to Ireland in 1973, lecturing in art in Waterford. Her family had originally come from Gracedieu, Waterford City. Influenced by the work of Picasso, Braque, Matisse and Bonnard, Rosemary Higbee used brushes, palette knives and fingers to create her work.

HAPPY HUNTING This little gem of a movie is about an alcoholic on the run who finds himself stranded in a town that is just a little bit odd. How odd it is only dawns on him when he and several other outsiders are used as game for the townsfolk to hunt. There is much to recommend in this movie, great locations and acting, realistic gore but one of the best is that it doesn’t outstay it’s welcome. It’s of a manageable length and you’re never, ever sitting there wondering why the whole thing is being dragged out. Quirky and funny.

Three local credit Keep the unions now offer Haven Marquee banking services

MEMBERS of three of Waterford’s Credit Unions can now avail of new current accounts offered by the institutions. Waterford Credit Union (Main Office), Waterford Credit Union Grange and St Dominic’s Credit Union Summerhill are among the 115 of the 250 credit unions nationwide offering the new banking service announced last week. It is the first time credit unions have taken on banks and the new current account will offer a full range of services, including a debit card, standing orders and direct debits, as well as overdrafts. The new service sees the coming together of a large number of the country’s credit unions and the service will operate under the name, Currentaccount.ie . People can apply in their local branch or online. You can also check if your local credit union is involved on the website, www.currentaccount.

ie. “For the first time, credit unions will be able to provide t h e i r members with a real choice for their day-today financial needs,” Seamus Newcombe, Chief Executive of currentaccount.ie, said. “And, this new service, which will be accessible globally and digitally, will enable Credit Unions to become even more relevant to their members in our ever-increasingly digital world.” There will be a monthly operating fee of €4 and the new service will offer and online banking facility. Some credit unions may offer concessions for students and over 65s. The development has been welcomed by Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring.

A GROUP of up to 70 people, calling themselves “Friends of Dunmore East’, held a peaceful protest outside City Hall last week against the council’s decision to refuse permission to the Haven Hotel’s retention of a marquee outside the hotel. Holding placards with ‘Save 50 Jobs – Keep the Haven open’, the protestors were out in support of the hotel and the Kelly family who operate it. “The Haven Hotel’s tourist business, and in particular its large wedding business, is a huge economic driver for the rest of Dunmore East,” said Michael Power, a butcher from the village. “We’re here today to show the council that we don’t want to be pushed around. The Haven and the Kelly family should be allowed to continue to do business as they have been doing.” Fisherman and amateur archaeologist Noel McDonagh said that the Haven brought “about €6 million to the area every year”.

Keeping your Dog Safe this Halloween Halloween and the period leading up to it can be a frightening and confusing time for many dogs. Fireworks tend to be sudden, unpredictable and bright and sadly this combination of effects can often have a profoundly negative impact on some dogs. In fact, research carried out on behalf of Dogs Trust, Ireland’s largest dog welfare charity, found that 52% of dog owners describe their dogs as being quite or very frightened by fireworks and bangers. If your dog is feeling scared or nervous, the charity has put together some tips to help keep your pooch safe. Walk your dog before it gets dark to avoid fireworks and flashing lights and to make sure he is well exercised and has had a toilet break before the fireworks begin. Feed your dog before the fireworks begin as he may become unsettled and not want to eat during the fireworks. Provide a safe hiding place – at noisy times around Halloween, make sure your dog has somewhere safe in his or her favourite room, perhaps under the table. Close the curtains, turn the lights on, and turn up the volume on your TV or radio to drown out the firework noises. Don’t leave your dog alone outdoors during the Halloween period, scared dogs can make desperate attempts to escape and there is the danger of him being injured. Be extra careful when opening the door as your dog may escape; if possible, try to ensure there is another closed door between your dog and your front door.

Signs from Heaven

O

ur beloved Grannie Pam passed away last month - my mother in law and my husband Jerry’s Mum. She was such an inspiration to our four kids with her love of travelling around the world and her music endeavours which she passed onto her grandchildren. She was born in New Ross and was adopted by an aunt when her mother died when she was just two. She moved to England and grew up in Taunton in Somerset. When she was 16, she trained as a nurse, and this proved to be her life’s vocation. She was a devoted and caring nurse who was much loved by her patients and colleagues, and when much later on she became a nurse tutor, she was a firm favourite with her students: many of them kept in touch after they qualified. Her devotion to her ten grandchildren with her love and skills of music and travel was a simple joy to behold. Pam

I asked her to send a sign if there was anything interesting on the other side always said she never knew if there was anything after she died and always had her doubts! In my last conversation with

her, I asked her to send a sign if there was anything interesting on the other side after she died. Grannie Pam died on the morning of the music course graduation ceremony of our daughter Orla. Jerry decided to not tell us, so as not to spoil the happy family occasion. Whilst standing outside the graduation ceremony venue at Maynooth University, I saw a big fluffy white feather sail around as if to say hello and then carry on its journey as if on a mission of purpose. Later that evening after we had got home, Jerry and I went for a walk in nature with our dogs, and he told me the news of Pam’s passing. As we sat together by a stream and cried a few tears, another big white fluffy feather appeared before us and stayed with us even in the fast running current. The next day when we knew that all our kids were in a safe place, we told them the sad news. Grannie Pam was a lady who was meticulous with her

hair, nails and dress sense. She gave a huge amount of her time to those around her, especially with her kindness and her encouragement to her ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She is so sadly and badly missed, and she will always live on on our hearts. I am so lucky to have met this beautiful lady in my lifetime. The nursing tradition is carried on with our daughter Iona who is the fifth generation in our family to train as a nurse. If there is a heaven up there I have no doubt that the gates will be open with a bed of fluffy white feathers to assist her on the rest of her journey - and I like to think that those whose feathers were a message from her. RIP Pam.

“There’s matter and there’s anti-matter, and something similar works with words too,” says wordsmith Anu Garg. Do you know the meanings of these less common antonyms: “dysphemism,” “eustress,” “nocebo” and “excarnation”? A. The opposite of “euphemism” is “dysphemism” (from Greek “dys” for “bad”), that is, substituting a harsher, offensive term for a more neutral one, such as “death tax” for “estate tax,” says Garg on his “A.Word.A.Day” website. “Eustress” (“distress” opposite) is a beneficial form of stress, as, for By Bill Sones and example, excitement at an upcoming Rich Sones, wedding. Generally, “eustress,” or mild PhD stress, is thought to foster motivation and spur action. Not a “placebo” (“I will please”), a “nocebo” is a substance that, though harmless, produces harmful effects in someone who believes it is harmful.

Q

Over fifty years ago, a young woman was raped and murdered in the early morning in her quiet Queens, New York, neighborhood. Reportedly, some 38 witnesses failed to intervene, leading psychologists to propose “the bystander effect.” What exactly is that? A. The bystander effect suggests that in a robbery or a stabbing, for instance, people are less likely to step in if there are other bystanders in the area, so the chances of intervention actually decrease, explains Grace Browne in “New Scientist” magazine. Now Richard Philpot and his UK colleagues are saying the effect may be just a myth. Looking at surveillance footage of violent situations in the UK, South Africa and the Netherlands, they found that “in 90% of the cases, at least one person, but typically several, intervened to try to help.” It was surprising, say the researchers, that “the likelihood of intervention was similar across all three nations, despite South Africa recording significantly lower perceptions of public safety, as well as higher levels of violence, on average.” Philpot hopes that these results will be reassuring to the general public, showing that people “have a natural instinct to help when they see someone in need.”

Lack of GPs sees drunk drivers go free of charges A WATERFORD garda had to release five drunk drivers in the past couple of weeks because he could not get a GP to take a blood sample from the drivers within the mandatory three hour period. In one case, the driver of a tractor that hit a wall was breathalysed and found to be significantly over the alcohol limit. A senior nurse in University Hospital Waterford told the Waterford News & Star that she was “shocked” to discover that the man who had been arrested

on suspicion of drunk driving and was under the supervision of Gardai in the Emergency Department, was able to “get away” with the alleged offence. A hospital doctor cannot take bloods from the person as it would be deemed a conflict of interest and the Gardai confirmed that they had tried a number of GPs in the Waterford City and Tramore area but none could make it to the hospital. Waterford Gardaí said the recent retirement of a GP who used to carry out blood samples

“morning, noon and night”, has put a lot of strain on Gardaí. “If we arrest someone during the day, it’s difficult enough to get a GP to take the blood sample because they’re all under so much pressure,” a spokesperson said. “Between 6pm and 7am we have to go through Caredoc and we’ve found recently that it has become so difficult for us to get a GP out in the three hour time frame, that we’re having to release drivers that we know for a fact were drunk.”

Plans for a walking trail along the coast

Opinion&Comment

A Vision of a New Future

I

n one of the most important contemporary novels ever written, George Orwell in ‘1984’, laid out a vision of a future that was as nightmarish as it was prophetic. At the time of it’s writing it appeared as if Orwell was specifically exploring the nature of totalitarian regimes such as Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia. The complete control o f people, the manipulation of media to suit the aims of one small group, the erasure of free will, it couldn’t happen here in the West, it happened under Stalin or under Hitler. Part of the genius of Orwell is that while, undoubtedly, he had those particular regimes in mind while writing the novel, what he had created has become increasingly more relevant to us here in the West with each passing decade. Terms such as ‘doublespeak’ and ‘thought police’ are common currency. The idea that clearly understood facts are now up for debate and the term ‘fake news’ is used without any sense of irony by large amounts of people is all worrying. It seems like forever that the term ‘backstop’ has been in the news seeing as it so closely allied to the whole issue of Brexit. Time and again we were told that this ‘backstop’ was crucial, vital to the wellbeing of our country, this term that seemed to mean everything and nothing all at the same time and which, perhaps, most people didn’t fully understand has been jettisoned with a swiftness that only a politician could manage. In ‘1984’ when a new, huge policy shift by the governing elite is made, all the records that referred to previous, out of date policy is eradicated. It is gone forever, it no longer exists, it never existed. We are assured by our present Government that we should just forget about the ‘backstop’, nothing to see here, move along please. In an increasingly atomised world where new technologies and advances are supposed to improve lives but just seem to make them more fractured there are few certainties left. We are told that all of the EU leaders have agreed on the terms of Brexit, that Ireland’s concerns have been met but how fully can we trust them. Also will the British Parliament ratify this deal? The DUP are incandescent with rage over the treaty and have already said they won’t support it. There was much backslapping in Brussels last week, we’ve seen politicans not only spin on a dime, but pirouette on one also. It remains to be seen what they will come up with next.

Our View

WIT researchers tackle student stress Researchers at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) have secured funding of almost €300,000 to lead a two year pan-European research project ‘Student Stress Training e-Mobile Management (SSTeMM)’. Research over the last five years have highlighted that there is a rise in problems of mental wellbeing amongst people attending college, and the most marked increase in the rise in work stress is in the age group 18 to 25. In Ireland, the Government’s recent announcement in the Budget 2020 to fund work in the area of student health and well being reinforces the concerns for this group of young people.

The SSTeMM project aims to develop an end-user accessible digital mobile platform providing work based education, competency training and practice based stress management support tailored to the immediate needs of student nurses whilst they are in their clinical placement. SSTeMM will support student nurses to develop personal resilience to enhance their work engagement experience. It will equip these student nurses and the clinical staff who support them when on placement with stress management skills and competencies that will develop and support their personal wellbeing whilst in training and once they have qualified.

Here’s a radical cure for obesity - eat less

I

fared badly in a fat report produced by the OECD to mark World Obesity Day. We have one of the highest rates of obesity in Europe, apparently, with one in four adults now classed as obese and one in four children overweight. The problem is the low-level of treatment, according to the Irish Society of Nutrition and Metabolism, the organisation we fund to worry about such matters. Proven treatments for obesity should be made available to all, said its spokesperson. He talked at some length about treatments, which are expensive and offer no certainty of success. But he never mentioned prevention, a relatively simple matter for which we can all take some personal responsibility. The low-level of treatment may well be part of the problem but there is a more obvious culprit - the high-level of eating. So OK, I win the Bleeding Obvious Statement of the Year Award. But it strikes me that

Michael Wolsey the one indisputable solution to obesity - eat less - does get overlooked among the acres of space devoted to fad diets and exercise regimes. But then, fad diets and exercise regimes make money for somebody. And so does food - not good food, which supermarkets sell for next to nothing, having paid the farmer even less. Junk food is where the real money is made. Steak has become as cheap as chips but chips have become a profitable commodity when served alongside a burger and washed down with a fizzy drink. Food in huge portions is

being pressed upon us at every opportunity. I saw an example at close quarters recently when I took my grandchildren to the cinema. I just wanted to buy tickets but the woman at the desk wanted to do a deal. Her first offer was for a giant box of popcorn, thrown in free for the price of the Supersize Coke that came with it. As an alternative, I could have three assorted bags of sweets along with a plus-sized fizzy drink of choice. A third deal included a voucher for a hot dog or hamburger and the obligatory fizzy drink in the cinema’s restaurant. And the restaurant had another trick up its sleeve to keep the selling circle going: free cinema tickets with every kiddies’ meal. Encouragement to consume food we neither need nor want is all around us. Most coffee shops offer their products in three sizes. The small one, which they call regular, is pretty big. The medium one would supply most people’s liquid intake for a day and the big

one - which they call grandé, or something equally pretentious could serve as a swimming pool for little animals. Large volumes of coffee will not add much to anyone’s calorie count, but a lot of the stuff sold in our cafés is not really coffee; it is some frothy, milky confection, high in fat. What’s more, the server will often try to persuade you to eat something with it ...“Anything else? These new muffins are on offer this week” Upselling - the trick of trying to persuade the customer to make an additional purchase shifts a lot of food that would otherwise go uneaten. Nobody gets obese just from eating a burger at the cinema or some snacks at the airport but these unhealthy practices all add to the problem. Cutting them out would be a step towards prevention. In particular, we should stop using food to promote the sales of other products. It might not solve the obesity problem but it would help lower my blood pressure.

Winterproof your car

W

inter calls for a set of preparations to minimise the effects of cold weather and snow. It’s incredibly important to keep your car in top running order to prevent breakdowns or non-starts during any cold snaps. To keep your vehicle in good running

condition, and to keep you and your family safe and with a dependable ride regardless of weather conditions, you need to prepare it for winter as well. There are a few essential steps in making a car winterproof, and plenty of local businesses who have all the expert advice, services and products that you will need to make sure you and your vehicle are winter ready.

waterford-today.ie October 23, 2019

| 21

Winterproof your car WINTER TYRES Depending on where you live and how cold it gets you may want to consider investing in winter tyres. These tyres are made of optimal tyre compound for cold weather with tyre tread patterns optimised for providing traction in all sorts of slippery conditions. If you already own a set of winter tyres, check their tread depth to see if you’d still be able to use them during snowy weather. Cold weather also depressurises the tyres, so keep your tyre pressure in check for safe and carefree journeys. SERVICE If you haven’t serviced your car recently, there’s a chance that something may be wrong with it. Having a safe car on the road is of paramount importance because it does not only affect you but also other drivers on the road. Having a car not fit for right weather conditions can be hazardous and even le-

thal. Therefore it is essential to know that your vehicle is ready to tackle any sudden weather changes. ANTIFREEZE Cold temperatures can cause all sorts of issues, and the worst thing that could happen to your car is for it to suffer a cracked engine block. That’s why your cooling liquids need to be upgraded to withstand harsh colds. Consult your mechanic to see which antifreeze works the best for your car, and know that you’ve made a significant step towards making your vehicle ready for the winter. ADEQUATE MOTOR OIL Cold temperatures thicken motor oil, which can have adverse effects on the engine. So, if you live in an area where the winters are long and cold, your car would greatly appreciate winter-friendly motor oil. Thinner oil will preserve your car’s engine during the

winter period, so switch to you manufacturer-preferred oil. . In addition to changing motor oil, make sure to change the oil filter too. CAR BATTERY Winter colds greatly affect car batteries which lose their power when exposed to freezing temperatures. So, if you keep your car outside during winter, make sure to start it from time to time and keep it running on idle. If you, however, drive it on a regular basis, you’ll have no issues with the battery as long as it is not near its end. With that in mind, it’s best to check the condition of your car’s battery with your local mechanic. FILL HER UP! There are at least two reasons for this one. First, keeping the tank at least half full is a good way to keep the fuel lines from freezing. More importantly, a running engine will keep you warm snow.

Bear that in mind especially if your daily commute consists of driving longer distances outside of town limits. CLEAN YOUR CAR If not cleared regularly, debris from snow, road salt and mud can cause corrosion on the undercarriage of your vehicle. So, always clean the inside of your wheel arches. You’ll have no rust issues that could be costly to sort out later on, and original vehicles without body repair also have higher resale value. By preparing your car a bit earlier than anyone else, you’ll avoid waiting in lines, and you’ll pay less since workshops charge more for their services during the rush period. Being properly equipped for winter is essential for not just yours, but the safety of other people on the roads, so make sure you’ve prepared your car well before the first snow starts to fall.

Home Heating Following a relatively mild start to the Autumn the first hint of the Winter to come is beginning to make itself known in the mornings and evenings and thoughts are inevitably turning to all things home heating...

Home Heating Twenty degrees Celsius is an ideal temperature for the living areas in a home. Lowering your thermostat by just 1ºC could knock up to 10% off your heating bill, saving around €150 in a typical family home. Get your boiler serviced annually to ensure safe and efficient operation. It could save you a further €150, which should cover the costs. Use the 30 minute rule in cold weather: In the morning, set your heating to come on 30 minutes before you wake up and go off 30 minutes before you leave for work. In the evening set it to come on for 30 minutes before you are due home and off 30 minutes before you go to bed. If only one room needs heating, such as a home office, use a space or portable heater instead of the central heating. For free standing heaters, choose ones with thermostat controls and timers for more efficient heating. While open fires look beautiful, they can be a real waste of energy with more than 75% of energy going up the chimney. They are also damaging to air quality, so choose a more energy efficient option. Don’t overheat unused rooms. If they are going to be

unoccupied for long periods, turn down the thermostat or valve on the radiators but keep a small trickle of heating going. This will help to reduce the risk of condensation. If you are leaving the house unoccupied for an extended period, set the timer and thermostat to allow for a low level of heating each day. This will help to reduce the risk of frost damage. Much of the heat loss from a house goes through the windows, particularly if they are single-glazed. Keep curtains closed at night and ensure they hang behind radiators. Insulating your attic and walls could save you 30-40% on your home heating bill. Grants for wall and roof insulation, as well as home heating upgrades, are available from SEAI with quick online approval available. Visit www.seai.ie/ homeenergygrants Remote heating controls allow you to turn on and off your heating from your phone, tablet or computer and are really useful if you work irregular hours. Is your house leaking heat? If you find yourself paying a fortune in home heating every year and still feel chilly at home, ask the experts about insulating

your home. With different approaches for different houses and budgets, as well as grants towards getting work done to make your home more energy efficient, this really is the gold standard way to keep the heat in your home. Look into cavity wall, spray foam and attic insulation as a way to save money in the long term. And make sure to check your attic access door. Even if your attic already has an insulated floor to keep heat in the living spaces where it belongs, the pull-down hatch is often left without protection. Heat naturally rises to the top of the house, and the drafty hatch can create a chimney effect. Make sure to attend to any gaps causing drafts around the edges of the door while you’re at it. Paying money on home heating fuel in a house that is leaking heat is false economy. How old are your windows and doors? Are they still working efficiently? Check the locks and seals and also check for draughts around the edges and around sills. Whether you heat your home through oil, gas, or by solid fuel, make sure to have your heating system serviced yearly and any chimneys or flues cleaned regularly.

ninenottomiss book of the week

dead at first sight

Father Delaney, Silent Witness RTE 1, Thursday 24th October @ 10.15pm

Roy Grace, creation of the award-winning author Peter James, exposes the dark side of the internet in Dead at First Sight. A man waits at a London airport for Ingrid Ostermann, the love of his life, to arrive. Across the Atlantic, a retired NYPD cop waits in a bar in Florida’s Key West for his first date with the lady who is, without question, his soulmate. The two men are about to discover they’ve been scammed out of almost every penny they have in the world - and that neither women exist. Meanwhile, a wealthy divorcée plunges, in suspicious circumstances, from an apartment block in Munich.

Joe Duffy narrates the story of Dublin priest and amateur film-maker Father Jack Delaney, who captured all walks of Irish life on camera in the days before television. Highlights include broadcaster Pat Kenny and his 101-year-old aunt Nora Whyte watching footage of her father and his grandfather performing tricks with an elephant at Dublin Zoo, and 100-year-old Nan White looking for herself in school footage from the 1930s.

Little Grebe ready to be relocated (Photo Justin Ivory) I got a phone call the other day from a friend about a strange duck in the industrial estate where he works. He reckoned it was a young duck whose wings were still too small to fly. Apparently, it didn’t look like your usual duck (Mallard) but was a bit more exotic looking. When approached it had made its way into some rough long grass beside his unit. Could I come and take a look? So, I hopped in the car and made my way to the location. By time I got there it had moved inside a warehouse where the owner had locked it in and provided bread and water until my arrival. A quick search revealed the bird hiding in the dark between a filing cabinet and a wall. There staring back at me was not a duck but a Little Grebe! Knowing the area, I reckoned it had probably come from lake/pond which was only about 300m way as the crow flies (but longer by human paths/roads). Placing the frightened thing in a box we relocated it to the lake where it happily took to the water, diving and swimming, and looked in perfect health.

Be afraid, be very afraid... The Halloween Spooks Parade is back to Waterford Retail Park! Dress up and get ready for the scariest Halloween characters in town. Kids will be taken on a lap around the Retail Park where they’ll be told ghost stories about the local area and its history. Plus: DJ, face painting and lots of sweets. The Halloween Spooks Parade is a free event. To join the event, online registration is mandatory. Please note that the tickets are only for children. Parents do not need registration for the Parade.

The long running, highly popular RTE Radio 1 show makes a welcome return for a second year to Waterford. The show will be presented by Sunday Miscellany producer Sarah Binchy. The writers are John MacKenna, Ian Maleney, Catherine Foley, AM Cousins, Andrew Doherty and Lani O’Hanlon and there’ll be music from piper David Power, folk acoustic trio The Kalimbas, Benny McCarthy, Brendan Clancy, Donnchadh Gough and Dónal Clancy” To book phone 051 - 874402 or go to theatreroyal. ticketsolve.com

play of the week Little Grebe in its natural habitat (Photo Justin Ivory) So, what exactly is a Little Grebe? The Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis), or Dabchick, is one of five species of Grebe found in Ireland. Two species breed here (including the Little Grebe) and three species are non-breeding visitors. Grebes are small to medium sized aquatic birds who hunt by diving underwater. They breed on inland lakes and canals and are regularly seen along the coast in winter. They have short legs set far back on their bodies and lobed toes (not webbed like other aquatic birds), which allow Grebes to propel themselves powerfully through the water, particularly when diving after prey.

dine in the dark Thursday, November 7, 7 PM – 10 PM Momo, 47 Patrick Street, €40 per person

Spooktacular Night Market Sunday, October 27 @ 5-8:30 pm Annestown House, Co. Waterford.

A parent-teacher meeting goes very wrong in CLASS – a new play about learning difficulties. Brian and Donna’s son is nine years old, and he’s struggling. His teacher says he should see a psychologist. But Brian and Donna – recently separated – never liked school, never liked teachers. So, are they going to trust this one? And should they? CLASS is an explosive tripleconfrontation in a classroom over learning difficulties, love and entitlement. Funny, heartbreaking and beautifully observed, with rave reviews and a sold-out run at the Abbey.

4 courses tasting menu + glass Prosecco (gluten free/ dairy free/ vegan available). We engage all of our senses when we eat so what happens when we eliminate one of them? While it is impossible to fully simulate blindness, participating restaurants in NCBI’s Dine in the Dark series provide guests with a unique opportunity to explore some of the challenges faced by individuals with sight loss and blindness in a delicious setting. 1€0 from each ticket goes to NCBI.

Copper Coast Market are back with our ghoulishly glorious traders for a SPOOKTACULAR NIGHT MARKET. We will be at The Stables at the beautiful Annestown House with some booooo-tiful crafts, art, zero waste products, retro t shirts + video games, hot beverages, hot food & more. Fancy dress is absolutely encouraged (though optional), there MAY even be some prizes on the go. To celebrate our SPOOKTACULAR event, we are having a howler of a competition. See you then for some spooky skele-fun.

AquariusRomantic fantasies dissolve under harsh lighting. Illusions fall away. Once you see how things are, the path to follow becomes clear. PiscesYou can see exactly what doesn’t work. Make domestic repairs and upgrades. Clean and scrub. Organize drawers and cabinets. Clear cobwebs and brighten your space.

In Loving Memory

PRAYER TO ST JUDE Most holy apostle St Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus. I am so helpless and alone. I implore you to bring visible and speedy help. Come to my assistance in this great need (ask for favour). I will be ever mindful of this great favour, to always honour you as my special and powerful patron. Amen. Promise publication and favour will be granted DP o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore of you to obtain for me my request....(Pause) The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so you are the saint of miracles. O gentle and loving St Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, intercede for me and whisper my prayer into the ear of the sweet Infant Jesus who loved to linger in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will be yours. AL Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. OW prayer to st. pio O God, your gave Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, Capuchin priest, the great privilege of participating in a unique way in the Passion of Your Son, grant me through His intercession the grace of..... which I ardently desire; and above all grant me the grace of living in conformity with the death of Jesus, to arrive at the glory of the resurrection Glory by to the Father (3 times).. 5th Anniversary LORRAINE COADY

The moment that you died Mum, My heart was torn in two, One side silled with heartache, The other died with you, A thousand words won’t bring you back, I know because I’ve tried, And neither will a million tears, I know because I’ve cried, It broke my heart to lose you, That pain will never go away, Especially when I think of all the things, I didn’t get to say, My silent tears will flow, For what it meant to lose you Mum, No one will ever know.

Mam, So many people loved you, That makes us very proud, You were a special mother, That stood out in a crowd, As time goes by without you, The days turn into years, They hold a thousand memories, And a million silent tears, For those who loved and lost you, And whose parting brought such pain, We will treasure your memory forever, In a world that is never the same.

- Miss you every day Mam, from your daugher Jean and grandsons Aidan in New Zealand.

- Loved dearly and sadly missed, your son Brian, daughter in law Carmel and grandson Paul xxx.

Mam, My mother was a woman like no other. She gave me life, nurtured me, Taught me, dressed me, Fought for me, held me, Shouted at me, kissed me But most importantly loved me unconditionally, There are not enough words, I can say to describe just how important my mother Was to me, and what a powerful influence She continues to be I love you Mam.

Lonely is the home without you, Life to us is not the same, All the world would be like heaven, If we could have you back again, What she suffered she told but few, She did not deserve what she went through, Tired and weary she made no fuss, But tried so hard to stay with us,

- Missed always, Catherine and John.

Mam, Today we bring you flowers, Sprinkled with our tears, For you are still a part of us, In spite of passing years, Some people say, as time goes by, The heartache will subside, But the feelings in our heart today, Are the same as when you died, No matter what we do, Before we close our eyes at night, We always think of you.

God called your name so softly That only you could hear, And no-one heard the footsteps Of angels drawing near, The golden gates stood open, God saw you needed rest, His garden must be beautiful, Because he only takes the best. - Love and miss you always Mam x, Christine x and David x Long is the road to yesterday, That leads us back to you, And memories of us together And happy times we knew, We shared so much together, Laughter, joy & tears, For us who thought so much of you. I remember the day I met you, And the day God made you mine, I remember the day God took you, And will till the end of time. We made our vows together, Until death do we part, But the day God took you from me, My whole world fell apart. The years we spent together, I keep within my heart, For they hold precious memories, Which will never let us part, But I never knew such loneliness, Could bring such bitter pain, That memories would return to me, And wound my heart again, So even in despair, I know that every tear I shed, Would grieve the heart that loved me, So I’ll try to smile instead. - Always loved and remembered by your loving wife Vickey Perhaps if I could see, The splendour of the land, To where my Dad was called, I’d understand, Perhaps if I could hear, The welcome you received, From old familiar faces, I would not grieve, Perhaps if I knew the reason, Why you went, I’d smile and wipe away the tears that flow, I’d wait content forever. - From your daughter Helen . Dad, God called your name so softly That only you could hear, And no-one heard the footsteps Of angels drawing near, It broke our hearts to lose you But you did not go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God called you home, You’re always close beside us In everything you do, You were our greatest treasure, God’s gift to us was you. - From your son Tony and daughter in law Becky

Dad, You brought us up so lovingly, with so much love and care, You set a fine example, and you were always there, If I asked one question Dad, why I thought the world of you, I would give a million answers and each one would be true, Your shadow walks beside me, you are forever by my side, Always there to guide me, since the day you died, I try to hide the heartache as I feel I must do, Because I was so privileged to have a Dad like you. - From your son James and Breda, Brother, You always had a smile to share, time to give and time to care, Years may pass and tears may dry, but memories of you will never die. - From your sister Peggy Brother, Memories are precious, They do not fade away, We think of you always, Especially today, Theres no tomorrows, For us to share, But yesterdays memories, Will always be there. - From Jimmy and Breda Brother, There is always a face before me, A voice I would love to hear, A smile I will always remember, Of a brother I loved so dear, Deep in my heart lies a picure, More precious than silver or gold, Its a picture of my brother, Whose memory will never grow old. - From Paddy and Ann Grandad, We are sending a dove to heaven grandad with a parcel on its wings, Be careful when you open it, its full of beautiful things, Inside are a million kisses, Wrapped up in a million hugs, To say how much we miss you grandad, And to send you all our love. 10.4.19

Too young to die, too precious to lose, Precious people are very few, That’s why Gavin, there was only one of you. That awful day you left us Is always on our mind, And though we try to reason why, No answers we can find. God must have known how much we’d hurt The day he made us part, When he took away our lovely son, He surely broke our hearts. He must have had his reasons, A mystery, still to us, He must have had a special place That no-one else can fill. We miss your sunny nature, Your smiling, happy face, And no-one else in the world Could ever take your place. You’ll never be forgotten Gavin, I’m sure you know that’s true, You can’t forget someone you love As much as we love you. One special person, one special face, And in our hearts, a special place, Gavin no words, no verse can really say, What we feel on this your anniversary. God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea, The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night, The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagles flight, The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a muster seed, The patience of eternity, The depth of a family need, Then God combined these qualities When there was nothing more to cover, He knew his masterpiece was complete.... Yes, he is my brother. - Gavin, ‘I miss you like the desert misses the rain’, think-

He will gently call and say; “Kay don’t be sad, I’m happy’, we’ll meet again some day. -Thinking of you always Gavin from Aunty Kay, cousins Benjamin and Avery, (New Jersey USA). Memories have such lovely ways Of bringing back our yesterdays, As you were you will always be, Very special in our memories. - from Uncle Paddy, and family Like falling leaves the years roll by, But memories of you Will never die, Sunshine passes, shadows fall, But memories of you outlast them all. -Never forgotten sadly missed by your Aunty Ann and Uncle Bernee

Mammy, When the emptiness of missing you, Is more than I can bear, I whisper Mammy I love you, And always find you there, For you left behind your spirit, It guides me like a light, Your gentleness surrounds me, To be with me all my life, So if you see me crying, And looking very sad, It’s because I miss you Mammy, And the special times we had. - Sadly missed by your loving daughter, Mary

Your name is often mentioned Our thoughts are with you still, You haven’t been forgotten You know you never will, You simply lived for those You loved And those you loved remember. - Always loved and remembered by Ann and Paddy Barrett. God called your name so gently, That only you could hear, No one heard the footsteps Of the angels drawing near, It broke my heart to lose you friend, But you did not go alone, For you see, part of me went with you, The day God called you home. - Always remembered from auntie Nellie and family

In loving memory of Peggy Walsh, late of Rockfield Park whose 12th Anniversary occurs on 27th of October. Mass offered. Though you’re no longer with us everyday, I find in one way or another you’re back in our minds. I might hear a piece of music, And once my mind is stirred back, To treasured moments the two of us have shared, I never try to stop them, I let them flow through, It’s just my way of spending time, Once more with you. -Remembered by your loving husband Noel, daughters Paula & Sharon, and sons Alan & Brian and families

It was a sudden parting, Too bitter to forget, Those who loved you dearly, Are the ones who can’t forget, We often sit and think of you, And think you could not say goodbye, before you closed your eyes, Your life was one of kindly deeds, A helping hand for others needs, Sincere and true in heart and mind, Beautiful memories left behind. The blow was hard, The shock severe, To part with one we loved so dear, Quietly today your memory we treasure, Missing you always, Forgetting you never. - Loved and missed always by his son Michael, daughter in law Marion, grandchildren Julie, David, Michael and Claire.

Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. J.M.C.

Rathgormack roll back the years Wildcats win

On Sunday last at Fraher Field before a crowd in excess of two thousand saw Rathgormack claim the County Senior Football title with a deserved 2-6 to 1-6 win over Balinacourty. In taking the Conway Cup, the men from the Comeragh were bridging a twenty year gap since their last title win in 1999. The opening period of the game saw the winners very by the much on the Villager front foot with Jason Gleeson pointing either side of a Ballincourty response from Sean Whelan Barrett. Indeed the pace of the Rathgormack attack was causing all sorts of problems with Ballinacourty who again struck with Conor goalkeeper Stephen Enright Murray and James Power called into action right from opening the way through for the start. In the time remaining and despite numerous attacks from Ballinacourty, the citadel of Rathgormack remained firm and the Conway Cup was on it’s way to the Comeragh for the tenth time. Next up for Rathgormack is a trip to Clare to meet either

BALLYSAGGART Congratulations to Ballysaggart who claimed their first Intermediate County title on Saturday last at Walsh Park with a 1-19 to 1-16 win over Ballygunner. The club, led by the Bennett Brothers, were playing in the Junior Grade in 2013, have made giant strides in the intervening years. They will surely be a huge addition to the Senior ranks if that is the way it goes. They face Causeway (Kerry) in the opening game of their Munster challenge.

Finn Harps place in the promotion-relegation play-off was secured by taking all three points against a disappointing Waterfprd FC in Ballybofey on Friday night last. The Donegal side hadn’t won since early August and picked up only two points in seven matches since that win. The only goal of the match in Finn Park came on six minutes, when defender Waterford FC boss Alan Reynolds by Paul Eliott Joshua Smith was disappointed with the result headed home his first against Finn Harps. goal in a Harps shirt. Walter Figueira had a half chance for the Blues on 74 minutes, but he couldn’t direct his shot on target before Dean Walsh cracked in a shot soon afterwards only to see Finn Harps keeper McGinley make a top class save. WIT Wildcats Debbie Ogayemi winning the hard battles with the Killester defence. Photo by Noel Browne Waterford Wildcats shook off their away loss to unbeaten DCU with a nerve tingling victory over Dublin side Killester last Saturday night. The gamewas played at blistering pace with the result hanging in the balance right up to the final buzzer. The visitors got off to the perfect start leading 15-12 after the first quarter but had a 8 point advantage in the early minutes before a brace of scores from co captains Jazz Walker and Steph O’Shea. Wildcats were forcing the ball inside and had little return for their efforts because the Killester defense stood solid under the boards as there was no outside threat from the home side. Things got better for Wildcats as the game went on when Maria Palarino blazed consecutive three pointers. Helena Rohan and Debbie Ogayemi added to Wildcats total as they went to the break leading 36-31. One wildcats score that stood out was when Abbey Flynn rebounded and drove the length of the court weaving through the Killester defence before dishing off a superb pass to fellow 18 year old Ogayemi who finished in style. As the game progressed every Wildcats score was matched by wonderful scores from Killester’s two Americans Adela Randell and Crista Reed who notched up 40 points between them. But last gasp baskets from Cathy Kavanagh and Steph O’Shea left Wildcats 6 points to the good leading 61-

55 as the game went into the final quarter. A three pointer plus a bonus shot from Sinead Deegan extended the difference to 65-55 . Gradually Killester ate into Wildcats advantage picking up several points on the free throw line as the Wildcats defence lacked focus and discipline. With just 2 minutes left to the final buzzer a single point separated the sides 67-66. The visitors had a couple of long range efforts miss the target before Jazz Walker swished a vital three pointer that put the required distance between the teams at the games end. Final score 71-66 was a deserved home victory for Wildcats who now have 3 wins from their 4 games to date. Wildcats top scorers - Steph O’ Shea (18) Jazz Walker (15) Maria Palarino (14). This weekend is reserved for the National Cup first round. Wildcats are not involved as the got a bye in the cup draw and will meet the winners of Glanmire and Liffey Celtics in four weeks time. This will be a away fixture for Wildcats who will meanwhile focus on what will surely be another thrilling encounter as newly promoted Maree BC from Galway come to the Mercy Sports Hall. The pride of the West were sensational last season going unbeaten in both div 1 league and cup . Like Wildcats they are off to a superb start winning 3 from 4 at top level. Tip off on Saturday Nov 2nd is 7pm .
