‘Fáilte’ drive to save tourist trade WATERFORD is hanging out a giant Céad Mile Fáilte to the rest of Ireland.

A campaign to welcome visitors and save the summer is being launched on television, radio, print and social media.

It will run throughout July, with the theme of ‘You’re invited, come and see’.

The Visit Waterford team hopes to offset some of the revenue lost from international tourism which has crashed because of Covid-19 restrictions.

International visitors accounted for around 75% of Ireland’s tourism economy last year.

David McCoy, chair of Visit Waterford, said the new campaign will focus on domestic visitors and will also encourage Waterford people to get out and about in their own city and county.

The campaign will highlight the historical interest in Ireland’s oldest city and the food offering from the county voted ‘Ireland’s No.1 Foodie Destination’.

Tramore homes

Planning permission has been granted for 18 family homes at Newtown Hill in Tramore.

MORE than three-quarters of women have had a go at home grooming during lockdown.

But they are not too happy with the results and many in Waterford have already booked an appointment to get to a salon soon after they re-open.

A survey of 1,200 Irish women found that 76% had tried home grooming and they gave the results an average rating of just 3.1 out of five.

The research, conducted for the website Eovke, revealed

that almost half (46%) of the women surveyed have already booked an appointment at a salon. And they have no intention of making homegroooming a habit: 61% said they intend to return to their pre-quarantine beauty habits when lockdown ends fully, although 22% said they might continue to do their own nails.

Almost half (48%) of the women survyed said they are not concerned about the health implications of returning to a salon or a beautician and felt confident

that any guidelines in place will be followed.

Nevertheless, 60% of the women said they would like to see a video or images of how a salon will operate before going there.

‘Go alone’ call as university talks stall

THE Labour Party in Waterford has called for a time limit on moves to form a Technological University (TU) of the South East.

It said that unless a resolution can be found, Waterford Institute of Technology should try to attain university status without IT Carlow.

In a joint statement councillors Seamus Ryan, John Pratt, Ger Barron and Thomas Phelan said: “The current impasse can’t be allowed to continue.

Waterford has been outflanked and overtaken within the thirdlevel education sector.”

Waterford had hoped to provide the main campus for the country’s first TU but the project has been delayed by failure of Waterford and Carlow ITs to agree terms for amalgamation and TUs have now been established in Dublin and Cork/Tralee.

Labour said the discussions with IT Carlow – which formally began six years ago – were taking too long and Waterford deserved a university in its own right.

ALAN Reynolds has revealed that a lack of communication with the club’s owner, Lee Power, was one of the reasons behind his decision to quit.

He also said he hadn’t been paid for four months and had his family to consider.

He has since been announced as Dundalk Assistant Manager.

Reynolds (46) has managed the Blues since 2017, winning promotion to the Premier Division where he took them to a top four finish.

All Waterford’s players and management have been temporarily laid off becasuse of Covid-19 restrictions and Reynolds (pictured) told RTE he has had almost nothing in the way of communication with those in charge of the club.

“I hadn’t been in contact with anyone in the club up until about last week when someone got in touch about how I was,” he told 2fm’s Game On. “That’s nearly four months. Nobody contacted me and you’re hearing rumours that the club doesn’t want to go back and all the rumours you’re hearing are either from players or the PFAI who are passing on information.

“That’s hard for a manager because you’re looking to pass it on to players, so that’s where it got to. There was really no dialogue at all.”

Reynolds said the decision to walk away from the club was a very tough one but that family considerations had come to the fore as had uncertainty about the commitment of the club’s owner.

“I’m disappointed having to step away from the club, I’m from Waterford and it’s the club I grew up supporting,” he said. “You put a lot of effort in, like all the other managers and it’s just come to a stage where I think it’s best we part ways.”

He said: “I’m four months now without being paid and I have a family so there was a few things to weigh up and I’m not sure about the appetite the owner has for football. It’s hard going for him, he’s one man trying to run a club so I just felt it’s time for me to look elsewhere.”

Waterford are now seeking a new manager. The club thanked Mr Reynolds for all his hard work. It said he had achieved “great success” and would be “hugely missed”.

FG calls marathon man off the bench MARATHON runner Frank Quinlan has been selected by Fine Gael to replace John Cummins on Waterford City and County Council.

Mr Cummins was elected to Seanad Éireann in April.

Fine Gael has also ratified former Councillor Sharon Carey as its area representative for Waterford City East.

Senator Cummins said he was “ honoured to be leading a rejuvenated Fine Gael organisation in Waterford”.

“The additions of Frank and Sharon are very important to our rebuilding process and will assist Fine Gael to deliver for

the people of Waterford,” he said.

Frank Quinlan (pictured), who recently raised €16,000 for six Waterford charities by running 21 half marathons in 21 days, said he was “honoured to be chosen to represent the constit uents of Waterford City South and the greater Waterford area”.

“Anyone who knows me will know I am very passionate about Waterford, have a very positive attitude and I intend to use these attributes to work as hard as I can for the people of Waterford,” he said.

Let’s bury myths about government

B

efore, during and since the talks on government formation a number of myths about the last general election have been regularly repeated.

The first of these is that Sinn Féin won the election, or, as several of the party’s supporters told Joe Duffy’s Liveline programme, Sinn Féin “got the majority” of the votes.

In fact Sinn Féin got 24.5% of the first preference votes, which is a long way off a majority.

Fianna Fáil got 22.2% of the votes and those parties each won 37 seats. Fine Gael got 20.9% of the votes and won 35 seats.

The second myth is that there is something fundamentally undemocratic about excluding Sinn Féin from government.

It is neither undemocratic nor unusual. After every election some parties are excluded from government Usually the party with the second biggest vote gets left out. Occasionally it has been the party with the biggest vote, if it can’t muster sufficient support in the Dáil.

That’s the way we do it and the way most democracies in Europe do it.

Northern Ireland is different.

Governments there are put together under the d’Hondt system which gives parties ministerial representation in proportion to the number of seats they win.

It is not, I think, a good system and it only works at Stormont when it works at all - because the Executive has very limited powers. In any case, it is not the system we use in the Republic.

Under our system there is absolutely no reason why two parties that secured more than 43% of the vote should not go

into government with a third party, the Greens, that won more than 7% of the vote.

True, those who voted FF and FG did not necessarily expect the two old rivals to enter into a coalition. But the parties have a lot in common and worked closely together throughout the lifetime of the last government, so the deal is not a great surprise. It would have been more surprising, and more of a policy shift, if either party had

gone into coalition with Sinn Féin.

In the immediate wake of the election, Sinn Féin tried to put together a government involving the Greens, small parties of the Left, and Leftminded independents. Had they succeeded, they would happily (and properly) have excluded Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael from government, despite their combined 43% vote, and given cabinet places to parties that

won less than 5% of the first preferences.

And here we come to the third myth, being peddled, in particular, by representatives of People Before Profit, that this Government of the Left is still achievable. If that is true, all they need do is go back to the Dáil, propose Mary Lou McDonald for Taoiseach and vote her into power.

To achieve this, the People Before Profit and Solidarity grouping, which has trouble holding itself together, would need to unite the forces of Sinn Féin, the Greens, Labour, the Social Democrats and almost every independent in the Dáil, including some the Left wouldn’t touch with a barge pole and who are equally happy to keep a social distance from the Left, a socialist distance we might call it. So, please let us hear no more of this nonsense.

There are three realistic possibilities facing the country.

One is the proposed threeparty coalition. Another is a government of FF, FG and some independents. The third is a general election, preceded perhaps by a short-term minority

government, formed simply to pass some vital legislation and keep the country ticking over until medical advice says it is safe to go out and vote.

Eamon Ryan has backed the three-party option because he believes the country needs a stable government and he would rather be part of it, and achieve some of the Green agenda, than outside achieving nothing.

I am not sure that the required 66% of Green Party members agree with him, particularly since the Green electorate includes Northern Ireland members who have no skin in the game.

The Greens are an unusual political party, as indicated by the fact that Mr Ryan is facing a leadership challenge from Catherine Martin, the woman who led the government formation talks on his behalf and who says she supports the deal - as well she might, since she negotiated it.

Ms Martin’s challenge has reduced the chances of getting the deal over the line. I hope I am wrong, but I fear we may be heading for the polls next autumn.

What is a mortgage?

A mortgage is a loan required to finance the purchase of a property.

It allows individuals to buy a property now and pay for it over a number of years.

When you get a mortgage you will need to put down a deposit.

The amount of this deposit will depend on whether you are a first time buyer or nonfirst time buyer. Lender’s also have criteria for the amount they will lend compared to the value of the property.

The mortgage amount will be the purchase price of the home, less the amount of your deposit (which can be made up of savings and any financial gifts from parents or family).

Mortgages must be repaid by the borrower with interest and your interest rate can be fixed or variable.

Regular payments, usually monthly are made over the term of the mortgage and are made up of two parts - the principal amount borrowed

Change the rules ‘and help our builders’

A COUNCILLOR has asked the local authority to support Waterford’s builders when issuing contracts for housing maintenance.

Cllr Joe Kelly said the last tender, issued just over two years ago, had conditions “that were far to onerous for local builders and contractors to meet”.

“There was a requirement that a builder/contractor applying needed to have a turnover of at least €1,500,000 over the previous three years which was way too much for most of the builders who traditionally carried out renovation works for Waterford City and County Council.”

Cllr Kelly said that “now more than ever”, the council had to put as much money as possible into the local economy .

He said “a large Northern Ireland based contractor” had won the tender and this had severely affected local builders’ incomes. “The €1,500,000 turnover requirement needs to be scrapped this time round and a much more reasonable figure used.”

Plea for trees facing axe Fit to print:

a wall to hang in your hall

THE Green Party has asked Waterford council to spare trees on the Dungarvan bypass that are facing the axe.

The City and County Council wants to remove some 60 of the 252 mature trees growing on that section of the N25 because it believes they are creating a danger.

But the Greens claim many of the condemned trees are perfectly safe and has called on the council to rethink its plans asnd “refrain from felling trees without a

substantial reason.”

“I have read the report that was prepared for the council and have seen these trees for myself,” said Críostóir Ó Faoláin, Green Party local area representative for Dungarvan.

“I am worried that there seems to be very little substance to the proposal to fell most of the trees in question. Where there is a danger that a tree might fall it makes sense to safely remove it, but it is not acceptable to cut down a

healthy mature tree because of a few little cracks in a footpath or because of leaves around a street light.”

To highlight the issue, Green Party supporters have placed a green ribbon on the trees (picture above) due to be felled.

And the party has organised an “online public meeting” from 7pm on Tuesday June 30 to hear the views of the public. It said local residents have not been consulted by the council on the plans to fell the trees.

The print can be bought on the Waterford Walls website and all profits will go towards supporting the artists coming to paint our city.

Curtis Hylton came to Waterford for the first time in 2018, when he painted the front of the old Waterford Walls headquarters on Georges Street, and a wall on Mount Sion Avenue up in Ballybricken.

In 2019 he painted the festival headline wall. Ardkeen Quality Food Store came onboard to support the festival in 2019 and sponsored this headline wall painted by Curtis.

again this year, through the Wall Owner Scheme, for a wall outside their own centre.

“Like everyone, I have admired and marvelled at the murals created as part of the Waterford Walls festival,” said Colin Jephson, Director at Ardkeen Quality Food Store.

STUDENT Sean Keane has discovered “a sight to behold” on the main campus of Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT).

It’s a bee orchid, a rare Irish wildflower.

Sean (pictured) was surveying a recently-created wildflower meadow when he spotted the orchid among hundreds of wildflowers.

The exciting discovery comes in the first growing season after the college signed up to the All Ireland Pollinator Plan, an island-wide scheme aimed at maintaining and enhancing flower-rich areas to attract and feed bees and other pollinators.

“It’s been a sight to behold for the past number of weeks with bees, hoverflies, solitary wasps enjoying the abundant flora,” said Sean. “This flora includes selfheal, hogweed, red and white clover, common bird’s foot trefoil, greater bird’s

foot, germander speedwell, cat’s ear and common knapweed. But the real cherry on top has been the emergence of the beautiful and quite rare, bee orchid.”

Dr Cara Daly, programme leader of the BSc in Horticulture and a Plant Scientist in WIT, explained that the bee orchid is a fascinating plant for a variety of reasons. “ It is often referred to as one of nature’s greatest mimics because it has evolved to resemble a female bee to attract male bees which they were probably once dependent upon for pollination,” she said.

“Amazingly, the little plant also releases the pheromone that an actual female bee releases – again, to attract that important

bee pollinator.

“Usually when an ordinary flower is visited by an insect pollinator, the insect is dusted with a few pollen grains which it transfers on to the next flower, but that’s not the strategy for this orchid. Instead, what this orchid evolved to do, is firmly deposit a little yellow pollen backpack on the pollinating bee’s back, which seems especially apt for a college campus.”

Lion’s Mane Jellyfish (Photo Kip Evans Wikicommons) If you go down to the sea today beware of the lions! They won’t eat you, but they could give you a severe sting! We’re talking Lion’s Mane jellyfish.

I’m sure you have heard lots of reports in the last two weeks of some bathing areas being temporarily closed due to the presence of these jellyfish.

With a main body, also referred to as the umbrella or bell, that reach up to 2m in diameter, Lion’s Mane jellyfish are truly impressive creatures.

The bell edge is formed into 8 large lobes and 8 clusters of up to 150 stinging tentacles.

These tentacles can be 3m long and give a very severe sting causing blisters and irritation.

In some people they induce anaphylactic shock. The oldest tentacles can be dark red in colour. Be warned, even broken fragments of tentacles retain their stinging power!

It also has four large arms surrounding the mouth.

These are a lot shorter than the tentacles. The Lion’s Mane can vary in colour from red to creamy yellow.

Other jellyfish that we get in Irish waters include: Common/Moon Jellyfish – translucent with four lilac, horseshoe shapes visible through the dome. These jellyfish are harmless to humans.
