Anger as uni deal turns to ‘debacle’ CONCERN is growing over the delay in establishing a Technological University (TU) for Waterford and the South East. It had been hoped the amalgamation of Waterford and Carlow’s Institutes of Technology would give the South East Ireland’s first TU. But progress has been slow and Waterford has been overtaken by a TU in Dublin and one combining ITs in Cork and Tralee. Waterford Chamber of Commerce has now called on the Government to intervene in “the ongoing debacle”. Sinn Féin TD David Cullinane has written written to the presidents of Waterford and Carlow ITs, asking for an urgent meeting. And a councillor has called on the Public Accounts Committee to summon the governing boards of both ITs and find a way to break the impasse. “Serious sums of public money have been made

available to both institutes over recent years to advance this merger and yet we appear to be no further to our goal,” said Cllr Eamon Quinlan . A Bill allowing ITs to combine as universites was first published in 2014. The Waterford/Carlow amalgamation was one of the first mooted but it has been plagued by rivalry between the colleges. Last June, a memorandum of understanding agreed by management at the colleges was rejected by unions in Carlow. Mr Cullinane said the positon was “absolutely unacceptable”. “The presidents of the two institutes need to spell out very clearly what the hold up is and how they are fixing it,” he said. Waterford Chamber called on Finance Minister Paschal Donohue to honour a commitment to intervene. Chamber CEO Gerald Hurley said a strong university was essential to guarantee the future prosperity of Waterford city and the South East.

City mourns its showband superstar WATERFORD is in mourning for its great showband star Brendan Bowyer who has died in Las Vegas. A book of condolences is open online at https://bit. ly/BrendanBowyerRIP and people can add their personal messages there until June 8. Mayor John Pratt expressed his sincere condolences to Brendan’s family who were with him when he passed away at his Las Vegas home. He is survived by his wife Stella, children Brendan Jr, Aisling and Clodagh and grandchildren Liam and Nora Stella. “Brendan Bowyer was a true Waterford man and is remembered fondly by Waterford people for his iconic career throughout the showband era,” said Cllr Pratt. “His 1965 Number One hit, The Hucklebuck, is a favourite of many Waterford people. He brought Waterford to life with a memorable rendition in Lombard Street during the 2005 Tall Ships event. He will be sadly missed and remembered by Waterford people.” Brendan fronted the Royal Showband which packed
dancehalls throughout Ireland in the `1960s. After leaving the Royal, Brendan formed The Big Eight and moved to Las Vegas He woujld recall that, after he relocated to Vegas, one of his “treasured memories of this time” was when Elvis Presley came to see him perform. X Factor judge Louis Walsh paid tribute, saying: “One of the first records I ever bought was The Hucklebuck and it
is still an Irish pop classic. He had a great life, he was a great artist and he had a great career. He was one of the greats. It was Dicky Rock, Brendan Bowyer, and Joe Dolan – they were showband greats.” Minister for Culture Josepha Madigan said Brendan could justly claim to be in the very top echelon of performers of the dancehall era. She said: “So many romances, marriages and
happy memories were created during many years of joy and entertainment that Brendan brought to this country and his adopted Las Vegas. He set a high bar and inspired so many other performers that followed. He will be so sadly missed.” Picture: Brendan Bowyer with Val Doonican and the then Mayor, Cllr Mary Roche, when the singers were given the Freedom of Waterford in 2011. (Photo: Noel Browne)
FF man says pact is ‘doomed to failure’
THE Fianna Fáil officer who recently called for the resignation of leader Micheál Martin has issued fresh criticism of some party members in Waterford. In a statement, Séamus Ó Néill, president of the Waterford Comhairle Dáilcheantair, opposes Mr Martin’s plans to take FF into government with Fine Gael and the Greens. He calls it a “dolly mixture” coalition “doomed to failure.” Mr O’Neill is critical of “Mary Butler TD and some members of our Comhairle Dáilcheantair Phort Láirge (who) are in favour of a step that would betray all that Fianna Fáil stands for.” He is also critical of a claim by Cllr John O’ Leary, chair of the Comhairle Dáilcheantair, that party members had been kept up to date on the government negotiations. “There has not been a full meeting of our members in this constituency for almost 12 months,” said Mr O’Neill. He appeals to Waterford’s Fianna Fáil councillors to reject a pact with FG..
Hospital puts visits online with video consultations A HOSPITAL in Waterford is offering video appointments and consultations to its patients. It gives them access to 15 consultants in 10 specialties at UPMC Whitfield. Using the secure video-conferencing service of Microsoft Teams, patients can connect with the doctors from home. They receive a text message containing a link to their virtual visit which they can access without the need for a special download. The specialities include ophthalmology, urology, orthopaedics, sports medicine and radiotherapy. UPMC hopes to add more practitioners soon. “We have always focused on providing high-quality care close to home—but now we’re bringing it into people’s homes to keep them safe and healthy,” said David Beirne, managing director of UPMC in Ireland.
SCREENING: Waterford TD Mary Butler has expressed concern that the HSE has no plan or draft timeframe for the resumption of cancer screening services. “We need to start looking beyond Covid and begin examining the reintroduction of other essential services in our health-
care system,” said the Fianna Fáil spokesperson on Older People and Health Promotion. SPECIAL NEEDS: Waterford senator John Cummins wants a summer education programme for children with special needs. He has called for extension of the ‘July Provision’ which preovides an extra month’s education to students with learning disabilities and autism who takepart in the programme. “This kind of programme is more important than ever this year, with pupils having been out of the classroom for so long,” said the FG senator. “I believe there is an opportunity to expand the programme beyond the cohort of students that usually receive July Provision.” Fianna Fáil’s Mary Butler has asked the Education Minister to confirm that the July Provision will apply this year. “I have been contacted by a number of parents who have been trying to find out about plans for the July Provision, but have been unable to do so,” she said. “They are understandably concerned that the scheme may not go ahead this year because of the current restrictions and social distancing guidelines.”

What I’d like to banish with the virus
T
he Parting Glass is one of my favourite songs, but I would be happy not to hear it again for a couple of years. A similar moratorium on ‘the new normal’ would be welcome and I would be delighted never again to hear someone declare that ‘we’re all in this together’ . I am bored with lockdown but, what the hell, there are worse things than boredom. However, I am sick to the teeth of the sights and sounds of lockdown that pour at me from every radio station, television channel and social media outlet. I don’t want to know how to make a face mask from somebody’s old knickers (what if somebody wants them back?) and I’ve no interest in watching anyone run a marathon in their back garden. I’ve never watched a real marathon from start to finish, but at least with a real one the background scenery will change. And what’s with all these ‘cooking for idiots’ programmes that tell us how to knock up a ‘sumptuous meal’ in
Two common carder bees on Knapweed by Michael Keating during iodiversity week recently
Michael Wolsey
ten minutes? I came across one the other day where a guy was explaining how to make beans on toast. I’m not kidding. Beans on toast! Open a tin of beans and put them on toasted bread. World’s shortest cookery programme. Well OK, they were posh beans on toast, but that’s no excuse. Lots of us are stuck at home with time on our hands. What we need is ‘how to make a sumptuous meal that is really complicated and will take hours to prepare’. You may never get the chance again.
I really don’t want to hear any more messages sent by kids to their locked-down grandparents. They are often touching and lovely but they are personal and should stay that way. And I don’t want to see any more stones painted with inspiring messages and smiling faces. Indeed, around here there is hardly room for any more, since
every house (except mine ... bah, humbug!) seems to have its pathways blocked and its gateposts crowned with them. I don’t want to hear any more would-be poets reciting doggerel on the radio (‘there was a young fellow called Cyrus/ who feared he’d developed a virus’) or watch any more of the ancient comedy shows several
channels seem to be running on a loop. If I want comedy, I can tune into one of Donald Trump’s news conferences. I have been reading The Mirror and the Light, the final book in Hilary Mantel’s trilogy about Henry VIII and his counsellor Thomas Cromwell, and I am struck by the similarities between Henry and Donald Trump. Like the US president, Henry was a large man who ran to fat in his later years. Like Trump, he only took the advice that suited him and blamed the unfortunate advisors when things went wrong. At least Trump only sacks them, Henry had them beheaded. The men share an ability to declare a blatant lie to be fact, browbeat their officials into agreement, and then convince themselves that the lie was true all along and that anyone who denies this is motivated by personal animosity. Henry advanced the lie that his marriage to his first wife, Katherine, was not legitimate, although they had been together for more than 20 years and had
a daughter, and that his second wife, Anne, had affairs with several men, including her own brother, although there was not a scintilla of evidence for this shocking claim. He forced his ministers and counsellors to support both claims and, in the end, seemed to believe them himself and to be convinced that anyone who thought otherwise was guilty of treason. In the same way, Donald Trump has advanced claims that America, which has the worst figures for Covid-19 infection, is a shining example to the world and that his response of delay and denial has somehow saved thousands of lives. His advisers, and political subservients like Mike Pence, have been obliged to agree and I suspect the president now really believes these lies to be true and that those who dispute them only want to hurt him. This from the man who believes it might be possible to beat the Covid virus by injecting bleach or taking an anti-malaria pill. Who needs old comedies when the sickest old joke since 1510 is resident in the White House?
What is Income Protection?
Many people believe that their most valuable asset is their home. In fact, your income is your most valuable asset because it governs how you and your family live. How would your standard of living be affected if you had an accident or suffered an illness and you were unable to work for a long period of time? You could face a large drop in income if you are off work and this drop in income could place significant pressure on your ability to meet your day to day expenses, such as mortgage and other loan repayments. If you are an employee and pay PRSI the social welfare Illness Benefit or Invalidity Pension may replace part of this lost income. However, the benefits are low and if you are self-employed you are not covered for these benefits at all. An Income protection policy will provide you with a regular income, paid out if you cannot

While it protects you if you are out of work due to illness or disability; you are not covered for redundancy. The policy pays out if you are out of work for longer than a period referred to as the “deferred period”, which typically ranges from 8 to 52 weeks. The payment commences after the deferred period and will continue to be paid until you get better and return to work; reach retirement age or you die, whichever comes first. The contributions you pay to your income protection plan are deductible for income tax against your earnings at your marginal rate, subject to a limit of 10% of your total income. If you pay tax at the 40% rate, for each €1 you pay for income protection you can claim 40 cent back in tax relief. So an annual premium of €1,000 actually costs you €600, after tax relief. However, when Income protection cove is paid out, it is paid subject to PAYE.

A helping hand for Gaeltacht colleges
CONRADH na Gaeilge has welcomed the announcement of a government support scheme for Gaeltacht summer colleges and mná an tí. The support consists of a oneoff funding package of up to €4.7m, which will be provided to west Waterford and other Gaeltacht areas to assist 700 host families and 42 summer colleges. The college courses, which are vital to the economy of An Rinn and district, have been cancelled because of Covid-19 restrictions. Údarás na Gaeltachta, meanwhile, is running a series of online workshops across the Gaeltacht districts to help salvage something from this year’s tourist season and to prepare for 2021. There will be a two-hour online session on Gaeltacht Na Déise, along with the Gaeltacht areas of Cork and Kerry, from 2.30pm on Monday, June 9. The sessions will be bilingual and places are limited to 15 people per session. To take part in the online sessions you should email saoire@udaras.ie

Bishop ‘cannot understand’ closed churches
BLOOMING: Mount Congreve Gardens will re-open on June 9. The garden will open six days a week from 10 am to 5.30 pm with last entry at 4 pm from Tuesday to Sunday. Thursday will be reserved for those who are cocooning. All visitors must book a ticket in advance at www. mountcongreve.com as a limited number of tickets will be available for each day.
THE Bishop of Waterford says people “cannot understand” why there should not be a public celebration of Mass. “Many people of faith are finding not being able to receive Holy Communion extremely burdensome,” said Bishop Phonsie Cullinan in a pastoral message to mark the Feast of Pentecost. “Like many others I am very sad that we still cannot gather for Eucharist together. People feel frustrated and cannot understand why the public celebration of the sacraments is not allowed. “Sacraments sustain and strengthen us, and many feel as if their vital importance has not been given due consideration.” When a church in Dublin opened for Mass last week, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin moved to ensure the open-door policy would not continue. He urged all churches in the archdiocese to adhere to Covid-19 restrictions . Bishop Cullinan did not call
for an opening of churches in Waterford for Mass, but he said: “Sacraments sustain and strengthen us, and many feel as if their vital importance has not been given due consideration. Care for the human person entails not only the physical but also the spiritual and psychological dimensions.” “I wish to commend all those who have been so patient in living without the Eucharist,” he said . “It is my hope that we will not have to wait too long for the Mass to be publicly celebrated.” But the bishop conceded that “we must proceed with caution”. “Each parish must be ready with volunteers who, working with their priest, ensure that all reasonable measures are taken to have our places of worship very safe so that people can be confident as they worship,” he said. “This will be a great help when the time comes for public Masses to resume.”
WATERFORD has been identified as the best port to serve Ireland’s growing offshore wind energy industry . An expert study looked at 16 Irish ports and found that only Waterford and Dublin met all requirements. But the report concluded that Dublin was already operating at full capacity, leaving the Port of Waterford in prime position to service the sector. The report was produced by the Carbon Trust for the Irish Wind Energy Association and part-funded by Green Tech Skillnet. It says the project could attract investment of €42bn to the port and create 2,500 jobs over the next 10 years . The port at Belview scored strongly for availability of additional land for development, proximity to existing offshore wind farm developments and
access to the national road network. The report says Waterford is one of the few ports capable of handling the weight of larger offshore wind turbines. “Existing brownfield land at the port, already in use for storing onshore wind turbines, has the potential to accommodate staging with little investment, or manufacturing with significant investment,” it says. Frank Ronan, CEO of the Port of Waterford, said the report had identified “ a huge commercial opportunity”. “We have been working for some time to position Belview as an ideal location for this type of activity over the coming decade and well beyond 2030,” he said. “We look forward to further constructive engagement with multiple stakeholders to advance this ambition.” The full Carbon Trust report
on ‘Harnessing Our Potential’ can be read at www.iwea.com. Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that a decision on the €500 million development on Waterford’s North Quays is expected in the coming weeks. The project’s backer, Falcon, has provided Waterford council with more details about the ambitious plan for retail units; a food court, an eight-screen cinema, a visitor centre, a seven-storey office block, 298 apartments and a riverside promenade. In February, the Government announced funding for a bridge linking the North Quays to the city centre, for use by public transport, cyclists and pedestrians. There would be a new bus and rail station. It is expected that, in light of the new information given to the local authority, a decision on the developmentwill be made by the middle of July.

Indulge your Hobbies
Hobby at East Coast Nature Reserve (Photo Justin Ivory) Overcast and cold, the reeds in the fen are swished back and forth by the strong south-easterly. All is quiet bird wise. Then, suddenly and dramatically, everything changes. The wind drops. The clouds roll away to reveal a bright sun in a blue sky. Within minutes dragons are rising from the fen and patrolling the skies like masters of all they survey. First one, and then another, large shape launches themselves to the skies from the nearby tree-line. Enter the dragon hunters. Like deadly, silent assassins, they pick off the dragons one by one. No, this drama is not a scene from the latest fantasy epic but one playing out at several locations along the East Coast in recent weeks. The dragons being dragonflies and the dragon hunters Hobbies. So what is a Hobby? The Hobby is a handsome falcon which superficially looks a bit like a small Peregrine but also bears some similarity in size and shape to a Kestrel. It has long pointed wings which are held swept back in a scythelike position giving the look of a large Swift. It has very distinctive red ‘trouser’ feathers on its upper legs. Extremely fast and agile, the Hobby is capable of sudden bursts of acceleration and high-speed aerial manoeuvres that allows it to hunt down its favourite prey, dragonflies which it eats while in flight, stripping off the wings before devouring the body. They also hunt martins, swallows and even swifts.
Red-footed Falcon (Photo Justin Ivory)) A scarce but annual vagrant visitor to Ireland – usually young birds which nip across from the UK to our shores for a week or two in May/June, this year has seen higher numbers than usual with sightings of between one to six individuals at multiple locations in Wicklow, Wexford, Dublin, Cork and Carlow. There have also been multiple sightings recently of Red-footed Falcon, another annual but scarce vagrant to our shores.

missing by Barry Cummins
Snowpiercer Netflix
Parasite Buy as stream/download
From 1950 to the present day, there have been almost 900 long-term missing people in Ireland. Where did they go? Are they dead or still alive somewhere? How many have been murdered? How many killers have got away with their crimes? RTÉ journalist Barry Cummins has reported on the unsolved cases of Ireland’s missing for decades. In this new edition of his bestselling book, he examines the latest leads and developments of Ireland’s most high-profile missing cases, including the women who disappeared under eerily similar circumstances in the 1990s and whose bodies have never been found.
A new ice age has wiped out most of the Earth’s population. Survivors circumnavigate the planet on a perpetually moving 1,001car train called the Snowpiercer, its carriages segregated by class. The premise of Bong Joon-ho’s 2013 post-apocalyptic sciencefiction film was always faintly ridiculous, but it worked, thanks to the director’s wit, the camerawork and the choreography of the action sequences. Four years in development, this goofball reboot ditches all the art and craft and strips it down to its essentials, yet it somehow still works.
Although the scale of its success at this year’s Oscar ceremony (where it won four awards) was a surprise, Bong Joon-ho’s (who also gets a mention in TV Show of the week) the thriller was always likely to find admirers beyond its native South Korea. This tale of a rich household infiltrated by a crafty working-class family (including Choi Woo-shik and Song Kang-ho) requires little translation: its twists and flourishes are instantly dramatic.

In Loving Memory
4th Anniversary Maureen kehoe
Unseen and unheard but always near, So loved, so missed, so very dear
7th Anniversary PADDY CUMMINS
22nd & 6th Anniversaries ELIZABETH & CHRISTOPHER O’MAHONY Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed, And always held dear - Love always your son James Mam & Dad
Cherished memories of a dear son and brother Michael Ryan, late of 34 Ashley Drive, Cherrymount and 10 Beechwood Avenue, Waterford whose 56th birthday occurs on the 7th of June. Let memories surround you, A wind someone might say, Will suddenly recapture, A time, an hour, a day, That brings you back so clearly, As though you were still here, And fills us with that feeling, That you are always near, For if we keep these memories, We will never be apart, And you will live forever, Locked safe within our hearts. -With lots of love from Mam and Dad, Margaret Eoin, Derek, James, Miriam, Collette and families.
o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore of you to obtain for me my request....(Pause) The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so you are the saint of miracles. O gentle and loving St Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, intercede for me and whisper my prayer into the ear of the sweet Infant Jesus who loved to linger in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will be yours. P.G.
20th Anniversary MARY WALSH
In loving memory of Paddy Cummins late of 22 Comeragh Park, Waterford whose 7th anniversary occurs on June 6th. Memories of the ones we’ve loved, Still cast their gentle glow, To grace our days and light our paths, Wherever we may go. - From your loving wife Maura, children Deirdre, Brian and Grainne, husbands David and Niall, wife Grace and grandchildren Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. J.P.

In loving memory of Christopher O’Mahony, whose 6th Anniversary occurs on 4th June, and Elizabeth O’Mahony, whose 22nd Anniversary occurs on 19th June. Mam & Dad, In dreams I walk with you, In dreams I talk to you, Only in dreams, In beautiful dreams, - Love your daughter Breda & Son in law Jim Mam & Dad I thought of you today, But that was nothing new, I thought about you yesterday, And the day before that too, I think of you in silence, I often speak your names, All I have are memories, And a picture in a frame, Your memories are a keepsake, From which I’ll never part, - Sadly missed your son Edward Mam & Dad There are always two faces before me, Two voices I would love to hear, Two smiles I will always remember, Of a Mother and Father I loved so dear, Deep in my heart there’s a picture, More precious than silver and gold It’s a picture of my Father and Mother, Whose memories will never grow old. - Love always your daughter Elaine & Son in law Alan Mam & Dad Love And Friendship,
9th Anniversary ROBBIE CUNNINGHAM
In loving memory of Robbie Cunningham, late of 35 Francis Street, whose 9th anniversary occurs on the 2nd of June. The month of June comes with regret, It brings back a day we will never forget, You left us so quietly without any fuss, And broke every piece of the hearts of us. For those who have a brother, Treat him with tender care, You’ll never know the emptiness, When you turn and he’s not there. - Miss you every day Robbie, from your brother Richie, sister-in-law Mary, and nephews Brian & Jack
Love is like the wild rose-brier; Friendship like the holly-tree. The holly is dark when the rose-brier blooms, But which will bloom most constantly? The wild rose-brier is sweet in spring, Its summer blossoms scent the air; Yet wait till winter comes again, And who will call the wild-brier fair! Then, scorn the silly rosewreath now, And deck thee with the holly’s sheen, That, when December blights they brow, He still may leave thy garland green. - Love always your daughter Joanne & Son in law Damian Mam & Dad Along the road to yesterday, That leads us straight to you, Are memories of the happy days, Together we once knew, And always every evening, We seem to have a way, Of wondering back to meet you, On the road to yesterday. - Love always your daughter Noeleen & Son in law Eamon Mam & Dad You left me beautiful memories, Your love is still my guide, And though I cannot see you, You’re always at my side, - Love always your ,son Anthony Mam & Dad Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us everyday,
You know that place between sleep and awake; That place where you can still remember dreaming; That’s where I will always love you, That’s where I will be waiting... As long as I live you both will live - Love and miss you endlessly your daughter Ann Marie Mam & Dad, If I had the power to turn back the clock, Go back to that house, At the end of the block, The house that was home, When I was a kid I know that I’d love it, More now than I did, If I could be back there at my mother’s knee, And hear once again all the things she told me, I’d listen as I never listened before, For she knew so well just what life had in store, And all the advice my dad used to give, His voice I’ll remember as long as I live, But it didn’t seem really important then, What I’d give for the chance once had, To spend some time with you again, Mam & Dad. - Love Always Your daughter Liz & James Nanny & Grandad, Perhaps they are not really Stars in the Sky, But rather openings where our loved ones, Shine down to let us know they are happy x - Missing you both, James, Darragh, Megan, Sarah, Christopher, Gary, Beth, Kevin, Daniel, Ava, Charlie, Sam & Jake

Sad is the heart that loved you, Silent the tears that fall, Living our life without you Mam, Is the hardest part of all, As we held your hand that morning, We knew we would have to part, With the kind and loving mother, Whom we loved with all our hearts, So rest in peace dear mother And thank you for all you have done, I pray that God has given you The crown you have truly won, In the shelter of thy Sacred Heart, Sweet Jesus may she rest in peace. - Always in our hearts, never far from our thoughts. Mam we miss you dearly, from your heartbroken husband Paddy, daughter Suzanne, sons Aidan, Paul, Tony, Mark and Kenneth, grandchildren, great grandchildren, daughters-inlaw and partners We hold you close within our hearts, And there you shall remain, To walk with us throughout our lives. Until we meet again. - Love Nancy, Paddy, Breda and families

Africa Rising needs your help
F
ew corners of the world have escaped the devastation of Covid-19. One of the biggest mistruths about the rogue microbe is that it treats all its victims equally, discriminating nowhere. While people of all backgrounds and dispositions are hit by Covid-19, it is those souls in the lower socio-economic brackets who, with the elderly, are among the majority falling foul of this wretched virus. This is true of the statistics evident in the UK and the US. Likewise, on the continent of Africa. The coronavirus does not treat us all the same, neither medically, nor economically, socially nor psychologically. If anything, it exacerbates pre-existing conditions of inequality wherever it arrives. Social — sorry, physical — isolation does not enter the equation when it comes to the 250,000 living in squalor in the
Paul Hopkins
slum that is Kibera in Nairobi, Kenya which I spent time in not long ago. As if the pandemic was not enough, another major crisis is looming in East Africa, where massive swarms of locusts are devouring entire fields of crops in minutes — putting millions at risk of alarming food shortages, in Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia, the worst crisis in 25 years.
Locust swarms will grow up to 500 times their size by the end of June if sufficient measures to tackle them are not taken. Many communities were just beginning to recover from recent intense climatic shocks of droughts and floods, and now their livelihoods are under threat again, along with the curse of Covid-19. Globally — where one in nine people will go to bed tonight hungry — an overhaul of the world’s food and health systems is needed to tackle malnutrition, a “threat multiplier” that is now the leading cause of ill health and deaths globally, according to new analysis. The Global Nutrition Report 2020 finds that most people across the world cannot access or afford healthy food, due to agricultural systems that favour calories over nutrition as well as the ubiquity and low cost of highly processed foods. Inequalities exist across and within countries, it says. One in nine people hungry, or
820 million people worldwide, the report finds. The stated vision of Glenisk, the 30-year-old Irish food producer, is for an organic society, where the future health and wellbeing of all children is assured. Glenisk has just launched the next phase of its charity and sustainability focused initiative, One Million Trees, for SelfHelp Africa, along with your local SuperValu. The result of the initiative, which runs until June 10th, will see more than one million trees planted in 2020, in both Ireland and sub-Saharan Africa. You can play your part in supporting the fight against climate change while also supporting local Irish businesses by simply choosing a pot of Glenisk yoghurt when you next visit your local branch. One pot equals €1 going to the initiative. One Million Trees will see 100,000 native trees planted in Ireland and 1,000,000 trees planted in sub-Saharan Africa. How will planting trees help, you may well ask. The trees help those living in harsh cli-
mates by providing shade, shelter, food, fertiliser and income. By participating in this venture, you are helping to reduce carbon and combat poverty. Just one mango tree can change a life, so imagine what one million trees could do. The single greatest attribute I have seen in African people in my years of travelling throughout its sub-Saharan countries is their determined entrepreneurship. From shanty town to crossroads, from factory floor to boardroom, they have pulled themselves up by the shoestrings and just got on with it. The young African today is an educated one and it is that and the (new) work ethic that is bringing about ‘The Africa Rising’. That is until Covid-19 and locusts and climate change and global inequality reared their ugly heads again. Nowhere was this ‘self-help’ more evident than while visiting a small, co-operative spice and fruit farm in BuBubu on the island of Zanzibar a while back. As I mounted the bus to
return me to Stone Town, the most beautiful African child appeared before me begging the accidental tourist for money, anything. As she stood in the warm but torrential short cloudburst, I asked her bigger brother could I take her photograph. He goaded her into obliging. And then she lingered, staring at me, the rain like dew on her sun-drenched skin. I only remembered my manners just as the bus door began to close. I put a five dollar bill out to her. She hesitated, then took what she had earned, and, as we pulled off to shouts of glee, her face lit up with the most unimaginable joy. Five dollars won’t buy you or I much but for this young girl in a blue kanga, pregnant with hope, it was a wage honestly earned. All I’m asking of you now is to spend a euro or so on a Glenisk produce to help those less fortunate than us. Please also see, h t t p s : / / w w w. i n s t a g r a m . com/p/B-PtvfLAwCY/
