Done deal: all set for a new cath lab A SECOND catheterisation . laboratory could be operating at University Hospital Waterford (UHW) within the next 18 months following confirmation that a contract has been awarded for its construction. Tom O’Brien Construction will begin work at the site in May and construction is expected to take a year. The Waterford-based contractor has a track record of delivering healthcare projects across the region and has worked previously with UHW. “The appointment of this contractor, alongside the awarding of a contract for an equipment supplier, are both huge steps forward in the delivery of the second cath lab at UHW and is very positive news for Waterford and the South East,” said Fianna Fáil TD Mary Butler, the Minister of State with responsibility for Mental Health and Older People. “I am delighted to be in a position to confirm that we have reached another milestone in this long-fought battle for

Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on health, the Waterford TD David Cullinane, welcomed the announcement. “It is a shining example of what is possible when local and regional politicians work together,” he said.. He promised he would continue to campaign for full 24/7 emergency cardiac care . Fine Gael Senator John Cummins said he had received important confirmation that the second cath lab would have the same equipment as recently installed in UHW’s upgraded cath lab.
