Making masks to fight the virus A WATERFORD company has developed a face mask that will help in the fight against Covid-19. It is for general public use and will help prevent the spread of the virus through droplets that occur when people sneeze or cough. The mask, developed by Azzurri Sport, is reusable and is made from a European specified material with approved standards for viral filtration. Some 6,000 of the masks have been delivered free of charge to crucial users working in nonsurgical roles. Azzurri’s John and Miriam Molloy and their dedicated staff have now taken the development to the point where it can be manufactured in Waterford in large numbers. John Molloy, who is chief executive of the company which manufactures sports wear, believes this mask will offer significant protection for people in situations where it is difficult to observe social distancing such as when shopping or

community volunteering. The development has been backed by Independent Waterford TD Matt Shuanahan. Mr Shanahan, who has experience in developing commercial hospital infection hand hygiene systems, supports this mask as offering significant benefits to people who are
trying to protect themselves, others and vulnerable family members. “I am very happy to support the use of this mask both from a health initiative and a business perspective,” he said. “It is great to see a Waterford SME displaying such energy and innovation in meeting a
problem head-on and coming up with a solution.” The masks are made from material used widely in clean room and aseptic manufacturing conditions and can be sterilised by a simple machine wash. For sales enquiries telephone 051-85006 or email sales@ azzurri.ie/covid-19.

Festival set to splash out in August DESPITE the coronacrisis, Waterford Walls are still hoping to go ahead with the festival from 20-23 August. One of the artists announced for this year’s festival is Irish artist Vanessa Power, known as Signs of Power, who has been painting with the festival since 2017. She specialises in handlettered type, hand-painted signs and murals, such as the ‘Just be yourself’ piece on Little Patrick’s Street in the city centre. Vanessa loves coming to Waterford. “As I’ve family currently living in Waterford and family roots dating back it’s nice to be able to contribute some of my art to the city,” she said. “I feel blessed to be part of it [Waterford Walls] again this year. The festival is a prodigious celebration of street art and I love getting to paint alongside so many Irish and international artists that I admire, it’s very inspiring and humbling.” Last year Vanessa helped paint the Blaa Wall, along with Mack Signs, Cormac Dillon and Buse Kanlikilic. This year she returns to paint a wall for Ardkeen Quality Food Stores, who generously came on board with the
festival for a second year. “The idea of coming back this year is really exciting, and I’m enjoying researching the business [Ardkeen Food Stores] to come up with some ideas for the artwork for my mural. Despite everything that is happening I hope the festival will go ahead as planned and continues to bring colour and art to the walls of Waterford again.
“It’s as important to the city of Waterford as it is to the artists themselves.” The festival has paid tribute to local businesses “who have been such great supporters of our festival throughout the years.” A spokesperson said: “Our hearts go out to all of them and their staff as they navigate these new challenges. We here at Waterford Walls
are still working very hard in the hopes that we can run our festival, as now more than ever wish to try and bring joy and colour to our city”.

Munster GAA faces €6m blackhole
THE GAA in Waterford is facing a big financial hit from the coronacrisis. More than €6 million in gate receipts could be lost to the Munster Council and its six counties, including Waterford. The senior hurling championship with its successful round-robin structure had been expected to bring in more than €4m for the second successive season. A further loss of around €2m could arise from cancellation of the football championships, although it is likely that both tournaments will be salvaged in some form. eturning to a knock-out system in the hurling championship would see the number of games in the competition drop from 11 to four. The GAA’s annual accounts for 2019, detailed record revenues of €73.9m, around half of which came from gate receipts. GAA Director General Tom Ryan has estimated that the Association’s revenues could be down by as much as €60m because of disruption.
We’re united in the fight against Covid-19 THE community of Waterford has come together in the fight against the Coronavirus. Businesses, colleges, churches and sporting bodies are all doing their bit. Students, staff and researchers at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) have been making a significant contribution . Final-year nursing students are playing a vital part in the clinical support of their registered nursing colleagues in University Hospital Waterford (UHW) and across the entire region while student nurses years 1-3, along with Applied Health Care students, have been recruited as health care assistants. WIT’s research groups are also making a practical contribution to dealing with the emergency. Using advanced 3D printing technology, the South East Applied Materials Centre in the School of Engineering has developed a sealed face mask prototype for the clinicians in UHW. The Department of Science and the Pharmaceutical and Molecular Biotechnology Research Centre has provided chemicals, reagents and PPE to UHW laboratory staff and are looking into new methods to increase the speed of testing for the virus. The Nutrition Research Centre of Ireland (NRCI), in the School of Health
Sciences, based in on WIT’s West Campus at Carriganore, Waterford has mobilised an international community of researchers to examine ways of enhancing immunity to the virus with targeted nutrition for the ageing population. SANITISER: The Manicure Company, a Waterford-based nail polish company has donated 1,750 250ml bottles of hand sanitiser to frontline charity workers and staff in the gardaí and ambulance service. When the company received a delivery of 1,750 bottles of 250ml hand sanitiser with a 60% alcohol content, they rang a number of Waterford nursing homes and offered 100 bottles to each one. EVERY LITTLE HELPS: Tesco has announced that it will make special donations to local organisations across Waterford through its Community Fund programme to help the most vulnerable people during the Covid-19 pandemic. A special fund worth €120,000 is being made immediately available. Among the good causes in Waterford who will receive a special donation from the Tesco Community Fund are: Helping Hands, Waterford Poleberry Co, Waterford University Hospital Waterford South East Simon Community, Waterford.
New rules to beat the holiday rogues GARDAÍ have been given new powers which can be used to keep people from visiting holiday homes and carvans in Waterford’s beauty spots. The move was prompted by fears of an Easter surge of rogue holidaymakers in defiance of the instruction that people must stay within 2km of their home, except for essential work. Now visitors can be turned away and those flouting the law face fines of up to €2,500 or even a jail sentence. Health Miniser Simon Harris said he expects gardaí will use the powers in “very exceptional circumstances”.
“What I envisage happening is the Irish people will respond very well to the public health advice of our doctors who are trying to keep them and their families well,” he said. “If somebody does leave their home - and remember we’re not meant to be leaving our home except for very essential reasons, - but if somebody does leave their home and meets a guard, the guard will remind them of the public health advice and the guard will ask them to return home.” Mr Harris described the new powers as “measures that gardaí can have in their back pocket in case they need them”.

opinion&comment
Stand by people who stand by us
W
ho does o u r society v a l u e most? If we are to judge by acclaim, it is health workers and gardaí, farmers who keep our food coming and retail workers who keep the stores stocked. But these people are not the country’s highest earners. Even well-paid doctors are far from top of the salary scale; farmers and retail workers are near the bottom. If we judge by rewards, the people society values most are financiers, executives of large companies, IT moguls and those who know how to play the stock exchange. Of course the rich, like the poor, have been with us always. But the gap has increased hugely in recent times, creating a strata of super-rich who live not in Monte Carlo or Hollywood, but right here in our own country, physically close but separated from most of us by a chasm of wealth and privilege.
Michael Wolsey It was not always so. It is some 50 years since I started my first job as a trainee reporter on a weekly newspaper in County Down. One of the perks was that I got to drive the small company van to cover stories. If the timing was right, I could sometimes hold onto it for my personal use. My editor, the redoubtable Annie Roycroft, had her own car, a modest little second-hand model, known as a Baby Austin. She also owned a small semi-detached house. The owner of the newspaper drove a Jag and lived in a detached home with sea views. His adult son, who worked on the newspaper, also lived in
that house with his young wife. They were hoping to start a family and were saving for a home of their own. So the proprietor was better off than the editor and the editor was better off than the junior reporter. The proprietor’s family were wealthy but it was wealth on a recognisable scale. In football terms, they were in the top division, along with local bank managers, school principals and the like. But we were all in the same league and promotion was always a possibility. By the time I joined The Irish
Press in the late 1970s, I had a car and a house of my own. The proprietor was Vivion de Valera, son of Dev and a retired Army major. He had a better car and a bigger house than mine but there was nothing about his lifestyle that was wildly different from that of, say, a shop owner or a senior civil servant A decade later, I moved across the Liffey to Independent Newspapers (INM) and discovered a different world. Senior management there weren’t just playing in a higher division, they were in some other league with rules
and rewards of its own. Tony O’Reilly, who ran the show, had a large estate and several houses in Ireland, and a private jet to take him to his other homes in America and France and to companies he controlled in Australia, India and South Africa. The de Valeras had a lifestyle that differed only in scale from my own. Tony O’Reilly and his sons moved in another stratosphere. And it wasn’t just the controlling family who flourished. Editors began to number their salaries in six digits, key figures in the company earned even more; bonuses and share options could add millions to the personal wealth of individual managers. Journalism was a well paid job in those days and my colleagues and I were all living comfortably, but there was no longer any real correlation between those who worked for the company and those who ran it. INM was not unique in this regard - not even unusual. Banks were telling us they couldn’t retain managerial talent unless they paid seven-figure bonuses.
Web site whizz kids became millionaires by selling off donothing companies with silly names. Consultants were paid fortunes for telling fat cat moguls what decisions to make. This happened everywhere and those who should matter most to our society - the health workers, the farm workers, the shop workers - got left behind. First they couldn’t afford to buy houses, then they couldn’t afford to pay rents. Society was being driven by the wealthy and we no longer seemed to know who really mattered. Well, we know now. Financiers won’t save us from the coronavirus. Knowledge of the stock exchange isn’t any help on the the intensive care wards and consultants aren’t much use on the supermarket checkouts. When this crisis is over we will, of course, still need people to run companies and keep the economy moving. We will need them more than ever. But I hope we have learned to value the people who stood by us when we the crisis came. We must never again let them be left behind.
Coronavirus: life cover implications
With the continuing advance of the Covid-19 pandemic, people who have a life cover policy in force should be reassured to know that if they die of the Corona virus or indeed any other cause, their policy will pay out in full. Make sure to continue to pay your premiums as usual so that the life cover does not lapse. If your policy lapses and your health has changed, you may find it will be more expensive to replace the existing cover or you may indeed be refused cover. Those with policies maturing in the coming months and who have a conversion option attached to the policy will still automatically be able to use that option to continue their life cover without any medical evidence and irrespective of their state of health at that time.
Expert VIEW John Smiles Qualified Financial Advisor Life Cover [called Mortgage Protection] is required to be in place as a condition of mortgage approval for all lenders. No matter if you are at the very outset of your mortgage journey and getting your facts together; you are in the process of applying for a mortgage and awaiting approval or if you have just been approved, you might wish to consider applying for and activating your life cover immediately. We have noticed a recent spike in applications for life cover as people pre-empt chal-

lenging times ahead. Their rationale is solid. If a person is diagnosed with an illness before their Life Cover Policy has commenced, it will potentially have an effect on what terms they will be offered having been medically underwritten. Life Cover could be postponed; a higher premium payable might be imposed or the cover might be refused. We encourage you to take early action to obtain the required life cover at standard rates and put yourself in the best position for securing your mortgage. You will also have the benefit of cover with immediate effect as soon as the policy begins. Of course, if you are experiencing illness right now, we are on hand to provide the best advice and explore the best options for you.

Cocaine found at Covid 19 checkpoint
GARDAÍ in Waterford seized a large quantity of drugs at a Covid 19 checkpoint. They stopped a car at the Grannagh Junction Roundabout and became suspicious of the driver’s behaviour. The vehicle was searched and cocaine with a value of more than €50,000 was discovered. The driver was detained. Illegal drugs were discovered earlier when houses were searched in Waterford. Heroin worth almost €1,000 was discovered at an address in St Carthage’s Avenue, while cocaine worth €600 was found at Newport Terrace. Meanwhile, despite the lack of traffic on the roads, gardaí stopped two drink-drivers. “You would think with all pubs and movement curtailed that we would not be coming across drink drivers but we had two drink drivers,” Waterford Roads Policing Sergeant James Twomey told WLR News. Four vehicles were seized from drivers without insurance. .Two of the drivers had outstanding warrants against them.

Hurling legend calls for TD hits out at team effort on cocooning firms claiming essential service
A HURLING legend has teamed up with the HSE to urge older people to stay at home. Eddie Keher, who along with his wife Kay is ‘cocooning’ at home in Inistioge, is urging those of his generation to do likewise. Eddie, winner of six All Ireland medals, says a little sacrifice on the part of older people can deliver a great result. “It’s very simple,” he said.
“Cocooning means staying at home at all times and avoid face-to-face contact. “For the time involved, family, carers, neighbours and our public services will help ensure you have the support you need. Do stay where you are. Arrange for food or medication deliveries to be left at the door. “If you have a garden or a balcony, spend time outside for fresh air. “Keep in touch with people
over the phone or online if you have access.” The local authorities in the South East, in association with the HSE/South East Community Healthcare and a range of other statutory and voluntary agencies, have Community Response Forum help lines in place. For Waterford city and county the number to call is (0761) 102 020
A TD has claimed that some businesses are operating under the guise of being essential services. And David Cullinane says that others are not observing the public health guidelines. The Waterford Sinn Féin deputy says he has raised these issues with the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation and is unhappy with the response. “The official guidance is that the judgement of whether a business is providing an essential service or not is a matter to be self-assessed, and if there are any doubts companies should contact the local gardaí who may be able to advise,” he told Waterford Today. “This is wholly inadequate and is a very concerning situation. There needs to be a process whereby workers have a genuine ability to report their concerns, have them assessed and decisions enforced if necessary.” In a statement, Mr Cullinane said: “There are a number of
non-essential businesses still operating under the guise of being essential services, and others where there is an issue with the lack of observation of public health guidelines. “Unfortunately, concerned workers have no place to turn to raise their concerns that they are being put in danger.” Mr Cullinane has also called for a change in the Wage Subsidy Scheme to ensure that workers receive a minimum payment of at least €350 per week. He said that because the scheme paid only 70% of wages, workers with weekly take home pay of less than €500 are receiving less than the €350 they would receive from the Covid-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment. Sinn Féin has proposed a wage subsidy scheme that would guarantee 100% of take home pay up to a maximum of €525 per week. Mr Cullnane has asked the Minister for Finance to ensure that €350 is the minimum payment that workers will receive.

Don’t be a real covidiot: learn the new lingo
MANY people find health information difficult to understand at the best of times, but over the last month we have been presented with a whole new set of medical words and terms. Here, courtesy of the National Adult Literacy Agency, is a plain English guide to many of the unfamiliar words.
social distancing or who hoards things like toilet roll. As in: “Are you seriously going to visit granny? Don’t be such a covidiot!”
Asymptomatic: This is where you are not showing any symptoms that you have Covid-19. However, you can still pass the virus on to others.
Incubation period: The time between when you are exposed to the virus and when symptoms and signs become obvious.
Community transmission: Where a person who gets Covid-19 has not travelled to an affected area and has no connection to a known case. Covidiot: this refers to a stupid person who stubbornly ignores
Herd immunity: This is when a high percentage of the community is immune to a disease, usually through vaccination and/or prior illness.
Morbidity rate: This is the percentage of people who have a disease in the population. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): This is equipment that will protect the user against health or safety risks at work. It includes for
example masks, gloves, gowns and eye protection. Super spreader: This is a person who infects significantly more people than usual. It is used in media but is not a scientific term. Swab: This is a small piece of cotton wool used by a doctor or nurse for taking a specimen (sample of something). If you need a test for COVID-19 a healthcare worker will take a sample from inside your mouth and nose using a swab. Virologist: A scientist or doctor who studies viruses and the diseases viruses cause. For a full list of words see: https://www.nala.ie/ covid-19-words-explained/

COVID-19 OUTBREAK Don’#t forget to wash your hands
COVID-19 OUTBREAK Don’#t forget to wash your hands
‘We’re here for you,’ - Gardai out in force Gardai will be out in force over the coming weeks to offer guidance, reassurance and advice to communities across the city and county throughout the coronavirus emergency. More members of An Garda Síochána will be more visible on roads, streets and boreens than in any period in living memory as part of the fight to curb the spread of Covod-19. The day-to-day work practices of the gardai have had to be hastily re-assessed to cope with the pandemic. Shifts have been altered, work targets realigned and a change of emphasis on the way duties are carried out. A Garda source said: “The message we are sending out is ‘we are there for people’. “It will be very noticeable that we will be more visible, but this is to offer people reassurance, this is not to frighten people at all. This is a measure to reassure the public the gardai are there to help and be seen to help. “If anyone needs the gardai,
we will be there for them to call upon us.” The source said gardai understand some people may get feel a little worried when they see the presence of more frontline staff moving about, particularly in light of some exaggerated and false claims on social media in recent days.
However, they said the increasingly visible presence on our streets is simply to reassure the public during these uncertain times. The Garda source added: “Unfortunately, there has been panic spreading online, chatter, rumours – idle minds causing panic. You can be rest assured
that the visible increase in Garda on the street and on patrols is not about that. Not about enforcement. “What this is about is reassuring the public that we will be there if anyone needs us. The gardai and the frontline services are there to help the public in any way we can. “If we all work together, we can get through this.”An Garda Síochána today announced a series of emergency measures combat the spread of the coronavirus. Meanwhile, an Garda Siochana are asking locals to be mindful of the policy of ‘social isolation’ when dealing with members of the force during the ‘Delay’ phase of the pandemic. While all stations will remain open, Gardai are asking members of the public to consider using either the telephone or internet to contact them rather than presenting in person unless absolutely necessary. On a post on its Facebook page, An Garda Siochana re-
minded the public that the following services are available: • In an emergency, call 999/112 if you or anyone is in immediate danger. • Non-emergency or general enquiries should be dealt through your local Garda Station by telephone and email. • In certain circumstances, the theft of property up to a value of €1000 can be reported online here. • To to renew a passport or apply for a passport card, please use Online Passport Renewal Service. • Garda Confidential Line – 1800 666 111. • Traffic Watch - 1890 205 805. • Crimestoppers Freefone 1800 250 025. • Bribery and Corruption Confidential Reporting Line 1800 40 60 80. An Garda Siochana added that if none of these services are suitable “we will attend to you as soon as practicable.”
Guinness donate Asthma sufferers €1.5m to crisis warned Local bar staff in Waterford and vulnerable elderly people affected by the Covid-19 crisis are to benefit from a €1.5 million fund setup by Guinness. The fund will see €1.2 million go to support those working in the pub trade while another €300,000 is to be given to elderly vulnerable people through a partnership with ALONE. “We have been supporting the licensed trade in the last week through what is an unprecedented period as we all work together to keep people safe through the closure of licensed premises across the country,” Oliver Loomes, Country Director of Diageo Ireland said. “Today we are announcing an additional support of €1.5 million, including €1.2 million to bar staff, and we will be working
with our partners in the trade, The Licensed Vintners Association and Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI), on how we can support bar staff to maximum effect using this funding in what is a very fast-moving situation.” Donall O’Keeffe, CEO, Licensed Vintners Association said “These are unprecedented times and it’s important that we pull together and show solidarity among the bar community. In addition the funding for services for older people is much needed and builds on the partnership that we already have in place with ALONE and Guinness addressing isolation among our elderly community.” In addition to its additional funding of €300,000 for ALONE, Guinness is also asking staff members to pledge time to support the charity’s Befriending service.
Asthma sufferers have been urged to be extra vigilant in their asthma management and follow the advice set out by the HSE, amidst growing coronavirus concerns. “We have been inundated with calls from individuals with asthma and COPD who are extremely worried about how coronavirus will affect them if they get it and what additional precautions they can take to minimise their chances of contracting the virus,” Sarah O’Connor, CEO of the Asthma Society, said. “Unfortunately, international data indicates if people with asthma and other respiratory conditions contract coronavirus, the health impact can be more severe; they are more likely to experience complications and to need hospital treatment. “The Asthma Society has been liaising continuously with the HSE over the past number of weeks in relation to this healthcare challenge. “We have communicated to the HSE the needs and very acute concerns of respiratory patients.”

9th Anniversary TERRY MURRAY
When I see your picture Dad You smile to me and say, We’ll meet again some day, So I go to where you rest It’s where I feel most near, I place your flowers around you And whisper Dad I’m here. - Thinking of you always from your loving daughter Deirdre & Son in law Michael Dad Your life was love and labour Your love for your family true You shared our troubles And helped us along, If we follow in your foot steps We can never go wrong. -Sadly missed, never forgotten, from your loving son David & Fon. Dad you gave me everything you had, Your time, your love and care, You never asked for anything And you were always there, Your needs were simple, Your wants were few, If your family were happy so were you, A heart of gold, a life so true, Loved and respected by all you knew. -Missing you always from your loving son Gavin, daughter-inlaw Michelle Grandad Today is a day of memories so sad, Of a grandad we lost And wished we still had, Gone is the one we loved so dear, Silent the voice we would love to hear, God must have thought you very special, To take you as he did, They say he only takes the best And this he surely did. -Sadly missed by your seven grandchildren, Dean, Dale, Aaron, Stephen, Craig, Chloe & Katie. Frankie, No Special day is needed, For us to think of you, You were very special And we thought the world of you, -Loving & Miss you always, from your Loving Brother & Sister.
23rd Anniversary TONY POWER
The good ones and the bad, The day you finally let is go, And left me more than sad, I wish that you could come back here, And fill back up this hole, You put it there a year ago, When your body left your soul, You always made me feel special, You were always there it seems, But after all this is too big, It’s only wishful dreams.
In loving memory of a wonderful husband, father and grandfather Frankie Waters late of 3 Iveragh Close, Lismore Lawn, Waterford, who died on 4th April 2003.RIP. The most wonderful husband ever to live, What ever he had he was willing to give, He never complained He was not that kind, He was one of those husbands hard to find, Thank you Frankie for the times we shared, For the love you gave and the way you cared, Look after him Lord as he takes his rest, For he was my husband and one of the best. “Till we meet again” -Sadly missed, never forgotten, from your loving wife Margaret
1st Anniversary BOBBY CUNNINGHAM
- Love you always dad, your daughter Sharon, Chicken and Tonya.
Treasured memories of our dad, Terry Murray, late of 5 Andrew St. whom God called home on 12th April 2011. Goodbye to my Dad, Goodbye Dad, I had to say, A few years ago on a cold April day, I’ll remember the good times and try not to be sad, But saying goodbye still hurts so bad, I miss you more than I can express, My love for you will never grow less, I keep trying to imagine how I will go on, I realise tomorrow is another dawn, I know you’re in heaven above looking down on us with all your love, Only to whisper in our ear, Remember that I never stopped loving you dear, I’ll always remember the good times we had, Remember the man, my wonderful dad, I’ll remember you each and every day, And if I need to talk to you, I’ll just sit down and pray. One day we’ll be together again, To talk about all the places we’ve been, Until that time I’ll always treasure, Having you for a Dad was such a great pleasure. -Love you always Dad, miss you so much, your daughter Eileen and Johnny xxx Seems like yesterday, That we were together, Then I opened my eyes, To realise gone means forever. It hurts and it aches, Its slicing my heart, For the rest of my life, Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). We shall be apart. I’m waiting for the future, Hoping to see, That when I die, You’ll open up those gates for me. Having a Pops, With a heart of gold, Is my favorite treasure, Which will never grow old. Family reunions, Will never be the same, Cause you’re not there with us, To be stronger I aim. Your chair at the table, Is empty and cold, You need to come home, I need someone to hold. Do you know, How much we all love you, Do you realize, How much I trust you. You’re officially gone, But forever in my heart, You and me Pops, Together, yet apart. - love and miss you Pops, Ann, Pat, Alana, Kiely. Florida U.S.A. If I could write a story, it would be the greatest ever told, Of a kind and loving father, Who had a heart of gold. If I could write a million pages, But still be unable to say, Just how much I love and miss him, Every single day.
