Making masks to fight the virus A WATERFORD company has developed a face mask that will help in the fight against Covid-19. It is for general public use and will help prevent the spread of the virus through droplets that occur when people sneeze or cough. The mask, developed by Azzurri Sport, is reusable and is made from a European specified material with approved standards for viral filtration. Some 6,000 of the masks have been delivered free of charge to crucial users working in nonsurgical roles. Azzurri’s John and Miriam Molloy and their dedicated staff have now taken the development to the point where it can be manufactured in Waterford in large numbers. John Molloy, who is chief executive of the company which manufactures sports wear, believes this mask will offer significant protection for people in situations where it is difficult to observe social distancing such as when shopping or

community volunteering. The development has been backed by Independent Waterford TD Matt Shuanahan. Mr Shanahan, who has experience in developing commercial hospital infection hand hygiene systems, supports this mask as offering significant benefits to people who are

trying to protect themselves, others and vulnerable family members. “I am very happy to support the use of this mask both from a health initiative and a business perspective,” he said. “It is great to see a Waterford SME displaying such energy and innovation in meeting a

problem head-on and coming up with a solution.” The masks are made from material used widely in clean room and aseptic manufacturing conditions and can be sterilised by a simple machine wash. For sales enquiries telephone 051-85006 or email sales@ azzurri.ie/covid-19.
