Progress, Hope & Happiness 2023: The Audacity of the Authentic Self

Year 7: The Audacity of The Authentic Self.

What would happen if we all were our authentic selves, every day, in every space? I am not suggesting being rude or intentionally insensitive (!), but embracing all the quirks, idiosyncrasies, and inconsistencies that make up the human condition.

As the world seems encased in one big overheated, monsoon-soaked, climate change-induced oven, perhaps now is the perfect moment to face our truly authentic selves and embrace the audacity of our truest and kindest voice.

For me, it means living my values without apology and having the courage to speak up. Not everyone always gets it, but they’ll catch up. It also means embracing my directionally-challenged self (don’t ask me for directions, really!), preferring glamping to the deep wilderness, and having an increasing awareness of my own personal style.

This year’s designers were encouraged to reflect their unique style and personality in this year’s collection, and their photos reflect this. You may find these designs in turns surprising, creative, and always uniquely appealing. All of them are worthy of your making time, and we hope the longer official make-a-long period will allow each of you to dig into a new make for your wardrobe to mark the upcoming change of season.

Lead with your audacious, authentic self. We are here for that energy!

Each participating designer has a presence on Ravelry, but given the site’s accessibility issues, all have additional design shops and prominently link to them on social media platforms. Please generously support indie designers + dyers. Together, we remain the creative lifeblood of the hand knit and crochet community.

The publisher extends a sincere thank you to Kathryn Ray and the animals at Alpacamundo Farm for generously allowing designs to be photographed there. The alpacas were lively, and Wilma, one of the farm’s Tibetan Mastiff guard dogs, was her adorable self. The farm produces small batch alpaca blend yarns as well as highly prized (mostly for personal use) livestock guard dog chiengora.
