PRESIDENT ANDREW ERMEL Keep those old Volkswagens on the road and keep those club permits coming in too!
THREE WEEKS AGO, SIX CLUB MEMBERS, INCLUDING MYSELF, UNDERTOOK THE BLOODY LONG WALK IN MELBOURNE TO SUPPORT MITOCHONDRIAL DISEASE. Thanks to the members who supported us in our endeavours and helped our road/support crew including our driver and Chef Master Chris Jeffes. Special thanks to the organiser/instigator of the walk, Club Membership officer, Charmain Green. With Charmain’s guidance, we all completed the 35km walk in just over 7 hours which was about a mid-time for the field of over 2,000 people who completed the Melbourne walk on the day in what could only be described as unfriendly weather conditions.
GENEROUS SUPPORT
The VW Club of Victoria supported us with a sponsorship and I thank the committee and the members for that generous support and the donation that was made to Mitochondrial Disease. Our VW Club member walkers were Michael Cronin, Naomi Christie, Andrea Green, Charmain Green and Katia Sayssauk. I’ve got to say I’m very proud of them all and the many long hours of training walks that we completed together leading up to the day were lots of fun, despite some of them being very hard mentally and physically to do.
MOUNT FRANKLIN CAMPOUT
Last weekend some of the club members attended the Ballarat VW clubs annual campout at Mount Franklin. Catering for the event was organised by Peter and Margret Bruty and we enjoyed a superbly cooked spit roast dinner and enjoyed the campfire drinks and company till way late in the evening. Some of us went on a late night walk with torch

It is absolutely important that the sticker be stuck onto the outside of the screen, no sticker no entry to VIP area, no exceptions!
CLUB PERMITS
The VW traders will be entering via the VIP gate from 7.00am. Traders have been contacted by the trade site organiser Jordan Bevacqua and will positioned again this year within the undercover betting area. The swap site sellers will now be permitted entry to the site from 8.00am - swap sites are available on the day at $25 per site. Buyers and the general public will be admitted from 9.00am sharp.
Club memberships and club permits are going well and it is the busiest time of the year for both club memberships and permit renewals being upon us just this month before The Day of the Volkswagen. Our last Coffee run is scheduled for Saturday 19th of November the day before the big event. Unfortunately, I won’t be there as I will most likely be at Yarra Glen on that day helping setting up the grounds for the Sunday’s big event The Day of the Volkswagen. If you need your club permit signed before the Day of The Volkswagen, then you can do this at the club meeting on the 17th November at the Austrian club general meeting. I will not be in a position to do these on the Sunday of the Day of the Volkswagen.
DAY OF THE VOLKSWAGEN
The Day of the Volkswagen is approaching now and this year’s event is going to be the biggest and best ever! Lloyd Davies and I have just been to Yarra Glen Racecourse and done our last pre visit to check preparations to the venue and to make sure all the arrangements are in place for the big day.
BBQ DINNER
On the Saturday night before Day of The Volkswagen we will be hosting the traders with a BBQ dinner at Yarra Glen Racecourse in the evening just to thank them for their ongoing support of the event. Camping on the grounds will not be offered to the

TAPPET COVER RACING
Tappet cover racing will be held in the UNDER CROFT grandstand area so if you have a tappet cover racer bring it along and see how fast you can go. Thanks to Bernd Wachs for volunteering his time to bring the Club tappet cover track along and set it up on the day. It’s a big effort to get it setup and we appreciate his help very much on this day.=
CLUB VOLUNTEERS Thanks in advance to the club volunteers who have already nominated and will be at the venue in the morning before the show starts. We request that the Volunteers try to make it into the venue from 7.00am and be in by no later than 8.15am. We plan to hold a briefing of the volunteers at 8.30am sharp at the club membership stand and the volunteers will be given their volunteers pack at that time. Please, if you are volunteer, be there by 8.15am at the latest so you can get yourself a good parking spot on the day in the venue and make your way to the membership stand for the briefing by Lloyd at 8.30 sharp.
VIP STICKERS
The various clubs and groups have all now received their VIP stickers to distribute to their members. The VIP entry this year will be via the gateway on the Armstrong Grove side of the racecourse (normal entry gate as usual). The VIP entrants will need to have their VIP stickers on the front screen and be visible for the gate attendants before they enter the gates. The VIP entrants will be able to enter the grounds from 9.00am.
public on the night before at Yarra Glen this year due to the new venue arrangements that are in place. Catering this year at the venue will be done by the racecourse and will include the usual coffee vendors, food vendors and from the Racecourse cafeteria which will be providing full cooked sit down meals as well as takeaway food as part of the new venue arrangements.

THE
RICHARD GRAHAM REPORT 2015-16
I
IT'S BEEN ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL AND PRODUCTIVE COMMITTEE YEAR. THE 2015/16 YEAR HAS BEEN BUSY WITH CRUISES, TECH DAYS AND VW SHOWS OF THE PLENTY.
The committee has seen some very dedicated volunteers putting a great amount of their personal time and effort in to ensure their positions are done effectively and more efficiently. Membership officers ANDREW MENGYL and CHARMAIN GREEN have been on top of all members ensuring that every member is paid up and up to date. Charmain has been responsible for a massive cleanup of expired members on our database as well as making sure all information is correct. MATT REYNOLDS has continued with treasurer role keeping the club afloat financially and keeping the tax man off our back. His help with providing new payment technologies will be a great benefit to members in the upcoming future. CHRIS SCANE has been our resident Historian for many years now and continues to dig into our past and bring us highlights of days gone by. He has provided countless articles for our magazine as well as communicating across the pond with the Victorian Volkswagen Club in Canada. Chris also took on the important secretary role and has done it very well. I couldn't have done my job properly without him by my side. ANDREW ERMEL has continued with the CH officer position making sure all permits are correctly done to both Vic Roads and the clubs guidelines.
8
Wagensville News
This also includes an audit with Vic Roads this year which showed the club had over 400 members on the scheme. Andrew has also held the position of Vice President (now President) in this time and has been a great support to myself as well as other committee and regular members. He will once again be a very productive and enthusiastic president having been in the role once before. Andrew was also our head organiser for our annual swap meet at Williamstown that continues to be more popular than ever. JULIEN LANGLET took over the role of Webmaster and has began the process of refreshing the website to be a more functional and mobile friendly website. He has also continued to update events and is ensuring the club magazine is emailed each month as well as requests for Volkswagens we receive via the club emails. Julien also was the head organiser of the first time run German Show, run by the VWCV. Julien worked very hard for months to bring forth a truly fantastic show and demonstrate to other German car clubs that when the VW club of Vic runs a show, we run it brilliantly. CHRIS JEFFES and CHARMAIN GREEN were also key organisers and helpers for the show's success. Chris has also continued his role of events coordinator. Every event run by the VWCV is advertised
everywhere on Facebook thanks to Chris as well as running some great cruises. The editor role was spilt this year to help with the demand of the club magazine. First timers JOSH HANDICOTT and ANDY RYAN teamed up to take the Wagensville News Magazine to a place it had never been before. The result each month was a brilliant publication very worthy of being put on a newsagents magazine stand each month. We also saw a huge input of members supplying content for our club publication each month making it a more personal magazine for our club. Josh and MICHAEL CRONIN also looked after the merchandise role well. Some new exciting items are in the pipeline and time will tell what these will be. JOHN STEVENS our constitutional matters go to person and JOHN GOODISON our technical officer have both been extremely helpful in their roles. LLOYD DAVIES now being our dedicated Day of the Volkswagen coordinator continues to prepare for our premium show of the year. The amount of work and time required to organise and run this show now is phenomenal and Lloyd continues to improve on the ever successful show of last year. Events run throughout the year are the Arthurs Seat cruise, Warwick Drags, Day of the Volkswagen, the club Christmas party, Pizza and auction night, Torquay motor show, Friday night car show by A1 autoparts, Kennett River campout weekend, Fastback fiesta run, cruise to St Andrews, Interclub cruise to Woodend with the Ballarat and Bendigo VW clubs, our annual VWCV Swap meet, the Federation Square display, Christmas in July, Tech day at Volkwerke on brakes, German Auto show and as well as our monthly coffee runs.
from fire. The club teamed up with the Ballarat and Bendigo VW clubs to run an auction to raise a few thousand dollars to help them back on their feet. We have also ran a Night of the Volkswagen mini show at the October meeting. Other entertainment at our meetings were Bring a wheel, My Hat questions, remote control car racing, Albert Park burger night, outdoor BBQ at the Austrian club, Blaze cut demonstration, paint detailing demonstration and Andrew's mystery sack. Finally I would like to say that whilst I was only president for one year, it's been a great year and I have enjoyed it immensely. I have had the pleasure of working with some great people as well as hearing some great feedback from members enjoying what our club offers and provides. I will be keen to have another go in the future when time and family allows but for now I am confident to let the next committee continue running this wonderful club. I've always believed that to get new ideas, you need new blood.
RICHARD GRAHAM
Once again thanks to CHRIS JEFFES on his work organising or assisting in many of these events. The club also supported reVolks as we have done the last few years. Day of the Volkswagen was once again very successful for the club. Lloyd and his BAND OF VOLUNTEERS worked very hard on both the Saturday and Sunday of the event. There was also many meetings over the previous months to have everything organised for the day. Our general meetings continue to improve providing better entertainment as well as better communication with the members to allow newer members to feel more welcome. January saw us get together to support a local VW family who lost everything NOVWEMBER 2016

y parents were overseas students in University from opposite ends of Asia. Mum was raised in Hong Kong having been born in a village in China and was studying nursing. Dad is a 3rd generation Chinese-Malaysian who had just finished his Engineering degree. Both are from salt of the earth, working class families.
My parents met at a mutual friend’s dinner in 1969 and started dating. There didn’t appear to be too many things in common with my folks short of a love of VW beetles - I guess it was all they needed. They had between them in fact gone through no less than 3 by the time I arrived on the scene. Mum started off with a blue 55 she bought off her friend for her first car. Other than having to replace the accelerator cable with a rope and the fact that she needed to accelerate in order to brake, it was a bargain at $200. By the time she met Dad, mum was on her second Beetle, a 62 - also blue, that was worth $100 and in even worse condition. Mum remembers giving what was left of the old 55 to

my uncle Eric (it was starting to backfire bad, and apparently seized completely a few months later). When Dad started dating Mum, his then nine year old 58 in Pearl Blue was the show car by comparison and he proudly drove them around in that. They got married almost immediately. Almost two years later, Dad sold the 58 for $350 and both moved back to Malaysia. I was born soon after in May 1971. When put to my Dad whether or not the VW had anything to do with my ‘arrival’ he had no comment. For some reason I remember being driven around in a VW during that time in Malaysia, it was impressions really; The cute wolfy on the bakelite steering wheel - the unique smell of vintage leather seats, the squelchy horn. But dad tells me he had a Peugeot 204 in Malaysia, which kind of made sense, it had the same ring steering wheel with a lion on the horn and its single overhead cam 1255cc diesel engine sounded identical to the bugs of that era. I do remember one afternoon, the “cicada” which had left the driveway hours earlier was replaced by a throaty 4.1 litre growl - my dad had traded up to an XY Falcon 500 that belonged to his Plant Manager, an Australian, who had it shipped over to Malaysia as his company car. Although I missed the Cicada, my brother and I felt we had upgraded to a football field-sized back seat by comparison, which was all we cared about.
FAST FORWARD
38 YEARS! I
am at my baby brother’s wedding reception, it’s Spring 2014. I’m sitting next to my cousin Kevin and we are reminiscing old times and his obsession with Cars. It’s probably down to his upbringing in Hong Kong where driving is only for the keen in the hilly 88 square kilometre city of 7 million people compared to 9900 square kilometres being shared by 4.5 million people in Melbourne. Since being on his P-Plates he’s owned a 2001 Nissan Silvia, a Golf GTI, a 1979 Porsche 911 SC and a 1971 Bug. I asked him how the Porsche was going and scoffed when he related the dilemma of having to buy a Golf GTI for his daily drive because his Porsche was getting too many noise complaints as he warmed it up in the morning. I reminded him that he had a choice at least, my daily drive to the train station was a tiny Brompton fold up bike and it would be far cooler driving even his old Beetle instead. We ended up talking more about the Bug, it was a 1971, 1302 "S" Type in Antarctica White. Kevin’s dad bought it for his sister Karen as her first car in
1994, it was a classic “bought it off an old lady who didn’t drive it often” scenario. After a few years of struggling up Victoria Street in Sydney Peak hour traffic Karen upgraded to her dream car, a Suzuki Sierra - also a manual but she “thought she could drive a tank” after her experience with the Bug. Kevin soon inherited it and the first thing that had to go was the AM stock Sapphire XV radio and the mono 4 inch, 6 ohm speakers. They just didn’t cut it for a young man trying to impress his mates in Year 11. Kevin and Dad replaced it with a 400 amp head unit with a 12 inch subwoofer, 16.5 inch split tweeters and a 6 x 9 rear speakers, a veritable “Studio 54” on wheels! The car soon became a father/son bonding project. Off came the 14 inch steel radials to be swapped for a set of ‘Empi 8’ 15 inch rims. According to Kevin “...this made the wheel look really fat, especially with the gap between the fender and wheel, so I lowered the front coilover by 2 inches to settle the car a bit better...”
T
he interior had to go too, replaced by Recaro racing seats in red, Momo steering wheel, alloy pedals, carpeted pedestal unit and Momo stick. Off came the dash and on came a set of “Monster” racing speedos; a giant Tachometer with limiter and warning light. The back passenger and door panels were originally red (matching the original seats) but were changed to black, side mirrors changed from stock chrome to a streamlined Porsche-style pair and off came the bumper stops. ...and into 1st year university, cruising with only funky tunes just didn’t cut it. The car had to at least be able to drag race his mates. His needs for a motor were clearly different from the old lady they bought the bug off. “THE 1600 [ENGINE] WAS ALWAYS A STRUGGLE AND I FELT LIKE I HAD TO REV THE HELL OUT OF IT TO GET IT AWAY AT THE LIGHTS WHEN THERE WERE MORE [PASSENGERS] THAN JUST ME IN THE CAR.”
Standing over the open boot lid today, one of the stand out features of his car is the clearly non-stock and massive 2.0 litre engine. For that, Kevin and his Dad went to 'Vintage Veedub supply' in Sydney and basically said to them “We want more grunt in the engine - no expense spared. You need to make it easier to drive [at speed] with lower revs and give it more torque down low”. The Garage ripped out the 1600 out and stripped it down to the block, which is about all they kept, what follows is a menu of tricks that Kevin and Vintage Veedub rolled out that I won’t even pretend to understand...

2 LITRE STROKER KIT LIGHTER FLYWHEEL HEAVY DUTY CLUTCH BIGGER FUEL PUMP TWIN CARBURETTORS Wagensville News
Another bad translation... sorry!
Back at the dinner table I was aghast. It was not the mods, specs or dollars spent on the VW that surprised me, when I had asked Kevin where the VW was now, I had assumed it was still in his parent’s Garage. “I DROVE IT INTO DAD’S RENTAL PROPERTY GARAGE IN SANS SOUCI ABOUT 6 YEARS AGO.” “WHAT DO YOU MEAN DROVE IT IN?” I said. “I DROVE IT INTO THE GARAGE, SHUT THE DOOR AND LOCKED IT.” “DID YOU PUT IT UP ON BRICKS, EMPTY THE FUEL? DRAIN THE OIL? REMOVE THE BATTERY?” “I DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY... I THINK!?”
I told him we needed to rescue the poor thing, that I’d pay a couple of grand for it, then pay for shipping to Melbourne and the roadworthy. Kevin was cool with that. About this time my uncle rolls up to the table, his eyes wide and starts speaking just that bit louder than usual after a few wedding toasts at the other end of the reception. “I HEARD THAT YOU WANT MY SON’S CAR!” he bellows in Chinese “WELL, WE WERE TALKING ABOUT HOW IT'S BEEN SITTING FOR SIX YEARS …”
“
TAKE THE BLOODY THING, IT JUST EATS MONEY AND I NEED THE GARAGE SPACE!
“
BY THE LATE 90'S
$10,000 LATER, Kevin said one day she hit 5,500 RPM although he couldn’t actually look at the speedo and Tacho at the same time (he was holding on for dear life) so the top speed was never recorded. I have driven it since though, and at 4,000 RPM it was already doing 65 MPH.
I WAS STOKED
I was getting a classic car and continuing the family lineage. The fact that the Bug and I were born at almost the same time on either ends of the earth wasn’t lost on me either and fascinated me. Were my childhood memories of the bug actually the memories of my steel-twin?
WAS THIS ALL MEANT TO BE? For the next six months I kept in touch with Kevin (actually the truth was I was stalking him), incredibly, Kevin worked in a Rail Freight company and transporting cars was routine. We made arrangements to get the car picked up from his Father’s rental property in Easter 2015 and I flew in from Melbourne. Unfortunately the garage roller door hadn’t been opened in over 7 years and the lock was very sticky. Add to that, the key we brought for a second, external padlock (fitted for insurance) was also rusted shut so we ended up bashing the bolt straight out of the wall with a hammer. In our haste to get the door up though we left the key in the roller door and ended up shearing the key off while it was still in the lock!
In the end... the fear of rats, rust, bubbling paint, jellied petrol oozing out of every orifice and other horrors evaporated when the cloth came off and virtually factory fresh Superbug awaited us! After a brief inspection with the only drama being a single flat tyre, we put it back into the Garage (sans locks!) and a week later, was booked on a tow truck to the rail yards bound for Melbourne. The bug arrived four days later in South Melbourne, her gleaming body belying the long process of getting her back onto the road.
A
fter an initial check-up, the whole front end needed work which was the easy part, the fancy pants engine installed by Vintage Veedub seemed to baffle their Melbourne cousins as the car remained there for nearly a month. I was advised (in lay terms) that the ignition was flaming out due to the fuel/air mixture coming from the twin carbys. They manually leaned back the mixture but the firing of the sparkplugs was still an issue with the presence of a mysterious “pistol-shaped” distributor - once that was replaced with a more standard one, the car managed to start and stay running relatively smoothly. That’s what they told me anyway, but I wasn't entirely convinced as there was many a head scratching moment with half the garage’s mechanics staring grimly at my motor and their timing gun. SPREADING THE BUG AMONGST THE FAMILY
UNKNOWN AUTHOR
I gave them a piece of my mind. How could a roadworthy be given to a car which nearly got us killed on the way to getting my plates?! After shrugging it off the manager got into the car with a huff and sped off. Sure enough, 10 seconds later, an almighty crackle could be heard at the end of the road like a wounded Messerschmitt coming in to land, followed a minute later by the guy coming back through the door on foot.
“AH... OKAY... LEAVE IT WITH US, WE’LL HAVE A LOOK AT IT.” I WAS BOOKED IN A COUPLE OF TIMES AFTER THAT TO PICK UP THE CAR, BUT IT KEPT GETTING PUSHED BACK DUE TO ISSUES WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING ROUGH. Finally after 3 weeks, I drove out of the garage bound for VicRoads with my roadworthy certificate and a huge smile. This smile quickly changed to horror as my car started sounding like it’s WW2 uncle and a couple of soldiers shooting schmeissers out the back. In fact it was backfiring so bad it stalled the motor on more than one occasion, with each breakdown bringing bemused pedestrians all wearing that “get a real job and real car” look on their face. I quickly got on the phone and blasted my mechanic who told me “They do that sometimes” and whether I was used to driving such a vintage vehicle. After assuring him that I could, he suggested that I may not have enough fuel in the car, so I dutifully turned into the nearest BP station and gave it twenty bucks. Sure enough though, as I pulled out, the bug gave the 21 gun salute again, died and cracked back to life again in the middle of a Lygon street intersection. Finally VicRoads was in sight (the longest last kilometre of my life) and as I jerked my way into the parking spot, I was more than convinced that a line of police cars had followed this unregistered suicide bomb and was going to have it impounded. By some miracle the assessor did not ask me to start the car, happy with a check of the VIN plate and a quick walk-around. I paid my rego, screwed on the plates and began the arduous journey back to the garage.

Wagensville News
When the car finally became driveable, the total cost from when Kevin had loaded the bug onto the tow truck to being fully registered and not having insults thrown at it was $7,000 and climbing. The funny thing is (and I think this is a universal trait with VW Bug owners) it still doesn’t seem like much money. I would have probably written off my 2005 Mini-Cooper if I had to spend that much on an engine job. But the bug, just take my money and get it going! I just want to see her on the road. Kevin checked in on me the other day – he’s constantly texting me for photos; I have made subtle changes, the red leather seats are back, so is the stock wheel, shifter, and a retro head unit. His favourite requests are for videos of me revving the engine. Here is a guy who gave away his bug, like a father would his daughter at a wedding, and he always says afterwards, “It’s okay. I’m just glad to see it on the road and being used.” I think that’s the special thing about bugs. They cause us grief sometimes but they just make people happy wherever they go.
O
NE OF THE FIRST PLACES I
went to after getting my bug was to Dad’s place. Quite unexpectedly, he had stepped out of the house before I’d even gotten to the driveway. He walked right past me without saying a word except his hand, which was held out for the key. He got right in and took off like it was 1969. For a moment, I could have sworn the expression on his face looked just like his picture with Mum and his 58 Pearl blue...

In this years ‘Corner’ we have some more interesting tales from our club newsletter, ‘Wagensville News’ and other Volkswagen publications of that time. This month we are looking at a few more recent issues of the ‘News’ and what was happening 50 years ago to give you another window from VWCV history. I hope you enjoy these and please feel free to contact me if you can help in developing the documentation of our history. PAT WHITAKER WAS THE VWCV President, Ian Williams was Vice President, Geoff Worthington was Secretary, L. Mason was Treasurer, Competition Secretaries were Dave Evans (previous VWCV Historian) and Rob Mitchell with the Editor’s position again filled by Pat Whitaker. The club was on the second number of the new look magazine and Pat gave an informed report on all things VWCV to fill in what was happening at the bottom end of 1966. The events for October included a General meeting at Volkswagen Australasia, Clayton, Plant 1. J Keesing have and on the methods of motor racing photography and some films were also screened. The meeting was followed by an Open Motorkhana Belmont Common, near Geelong and another Motorkhana at Rythdale, near Pakenham South on the southern side of the Princes Highway for the last Sunday of that month.

Wagensville News
FEATURED ARE MANY STORIES ON CLUB and local/international VW activities; First up there was an Editor’s report on the premier fundraising event for the club – the annual club auction. 16 years ago the VWCV was struggling financially and didn’t have the finances we have now due to our hard work and prudent stewardship. $1700 was a huge amount of money in those days and meant the club continued to support its members, just as it does today.
THE BIG FORMAT ‘NEWS’ reported on the almost Volkswagen victory at the Rothmans Southern Cross Rally, details of the VWCV Christmas Hampers, a report on the first 10 Pin Bowling Night for the new club year at the Chadstone Bowl (long since gone!), a Classic VWCV Crossword (see in this issue) and a call for old editions (in 1966) of Wagensville News from Roger Backway – maybe we could say Roger was the first VWCV Historian trying to preserve our history through the club magazine collection.
STEVE ERMEL WAS THE CLUB PRESIDENT, Jon Edsell was Vice President/Membership Secretary/ Pointscore Officer, Bill Sundermann was Secretary, Ivars Neibergs was Treasurer, Group 5 Rep was Cameron Stewart, Social Secretary was Anthony Surie and Editors were Phil Irwin and Brenton Coles. The October program was fairly light with a busy November to follow culminating in Day of the the Volkswagen on November 28 in that year; a special meeting to discuss DOTVW and the planning for it at the regular venue of the Café Hotel at 480 Victoria St,

STEVE THEN WENT ON TO GIVE HIS REPORT with the interesting item at the auction was the liquid fertilizer (worm poo!) bring the best financial returns – highlighting the number of green thumbs in our car club at that time, maybe they are still out there! Steve also reported on a Tech Day in September on safety checks for Club Permit Regos with Andrew, another indicator of how much service the Ermel family have given to this great club. Cameron gave a good report on motorsport and other club activities. There was a member profile on Jon Edsell and an extensive report on world VW news. Finally the ‘For Sale’ section always shoots up some great bits and this month is no exception – Type 3 Wagon’s, 1970 White, engine smokey, no battery $280; 1973 Red, mechanically OK, hole in exhaust, back door hinge bent, no serious dents, no battery $350 and 1973 Mustard, mechanically OK, tail light broken. Hope some of these 1970s time capsules survived but I am happy I still have two still running in the 21st century!
MICHAEL CRONIN WAS THE CLUB PRESIDENT, Dean Holden OCT was Vice President and Andrew Ermel was Secretary, a familiar crew indeed! Tony Albers was the Editor and had just taken over the editorial responsibilities for the ‘News’. The highlights of October were the preparations for VWCV Day of the Volkswagen at Cranbourne Racecourse, arrangements for the trip
2006
to South Australia organsed by John Stevens and the VWCV Oktoberfest Cruise to the Cuckoo Restaurant in the Dandenong Ranges. (Fairly light on the agenda but that was after a fairly full year). THE ‘NEWS’ CARRIED ARTICLES ABOUT THE PEOPLES CAr – an interesting short article on how the early Type 1 started life in the 1930s and a good article from John & Jan Stevens about the Teddy Bears BBQ held on the 24th of September that year. John had every cruise organizers worst nightmare with very bad weather forecast for the day and a howling gale the night before, 9 down to – 2 degrees). John took off with 22 cars from the Croydon Hotel over the Black Spur and into Eildon with 28 cars. The wind abated, the sun tried to break through and a good time was had by all who participated. Look forward to seeing you all at the next VWCV event! Regards,

A TRULY GREAT AND ICONIC VWCV EVENT
KENNETT RIVER FRIDAY 4TH – SUNDAY 6TH MARCH 2017
Lettuce to
the editorS
Senator Wayne Lewis
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE WORLD FAMOUS ANNUAL VWCV KENNETT RIVER CAMP OUT IS ON AGAIN.
T
he salubrious Kennett River Holiday Park, 164 kms from Melbourne and right on Victoria’s magnificent Great Ocean Road, is where all the action will occur. The club does not run a group cruise down to the event as most members choose to arrive at different times on the Friday afternoon or evening. We usually get between 20 to 30 sites full of VWs and their owners and friends. The club has made a provisional reservation at the park for a large group of powered campsites for the nights of Friday 4 and Saturday 5 March 2017. If you intend to go please contact the park directly on 1300 664 417 or 5289 0272 and tell them you are with the Volkswagen Club. If you are after cabin accommodation please act now. There may be some special activities organised and on offer over the weekend. We will let you know about these closer to the event.
Excited VWCV members en-route to the 2008 VWCV Kennett River Camp Out. Do I hear banjo's?
The main purpose of this notification is so that you can reserve your camping site well before the Christmas rush and before all the available sites for this weekend are booked. If you leave it to next year you might, at best, end up with an unpowered site away from all the action. This is a truly great and iconic VWCV event and is one that must not be missed. See you there. SHOPPING AT ALDI The other day I was in at Aldi picking up some chocolate and power tools. On previous shopping strips to Aldi I had often bought things that were quite cheap but I probably didn’t really need. Items such as cassette tapes on 'How to speak 17th century Norwegian', a solar-powered wood parquetry steam cleaner and a K-Tel multipurpose foot-spa and kettle. So anyway, I was strolling down the middle aisles when I noticed a rather large cardboard box in one of the tubs of random merchandise. On closer inspection, I observed that it was a brand new Volkswagen gearbox to suit a Type 3. I called out to one of the assistants who told me that if I wanted one, I could also upgrade to a Prostreet 0.82 4th Gear gearbox with a higher ratio that reduces engine RPM at cruising speeds for an extra $79! With only half a pallet left, I thought I better grab one. Luckily I had brought along an extra large plastic bag. I put the gearbox in the bag and headed towards the checkout. To my surprise there was another pallet loaded with Engine Bay Door Seals for a 55-79 Type 2 Kombi. Now I don’t own a Kombi, but at that price I grabbed some anyway as you just never know when they might come in handy. You might not be so lucky at your local store. Check your catalogue for details. Senator Wayne Lewis DEAR WAYNE LEWIS, THE EDITOR, My name is Obadiah Shadrach and I am a member of the Volkswagen Club of Greater Eastern Melbourne. I’m writing this letter in response to your article in last month’s Wagensville news on Rotational Inertia Oversteering.

Last month I sent you at least seven letters and included Beta Video tape of the secret testing footage of the prototype car known as project XP8, none of which you have acknowledged as receiving? I mailed these to the club PO Box and included a stamped selfaddressed envelope with a full 5c stamp for the return of my video after your use of the footage? Just a bit of background on myself and my expertise in VW’s, which includes from my time spent at Volkswagens secret research facility in Frankston, Victoria during the 1960’s. This was before the introduction of the front wheel drive water cooled range in 1972. My concerns relate to the assumptions you made in your article that the project was just “Talk” of the relocation of the engine from the front to the rear of the VW Beetle? There are at least two surviving prototypes of the modified cars, one of which is still in my possession and driven around the streets of Frankston to this day. The comments about raising the tunnel to accommodate the drive shaft did not occur. Instead, a Getrag drive was installed to the rear of the motor and a hydraulic pump was mounted bellow the drive and supplied fluid under pressure to the rear passengers side wheel “drive pump”, which was now configured with an independent knee action suspension. Variable drive pressures were achieved from a hand operated limiting valve located below the original shift and the engine RPM was governed by foot pedals located on both passenger and driver sides of the vehicle. This system works well although under high loads, the hydraulic fluid has a tendency to overheat somewhat, hence a large 8 pass oil cooler was located across the front apron below the front bumper, similar to the serpentine cooler found in the RS Carrera Porsche. The single rear wheel drive works well in most conditions but the increased loads to a single tyre required that wheels are rotated regularly about every 300 miles to ensure even wear on the tyres. Some situations of negotiating “high crown” roads did present problems with the decreased traction provided to the rear passenger wheel and often required that the driver move to the passenger side front seat temporarily to increase the load on the passenger side of the vehicle. I hope this clears up some of the mis-information that you may have about the project. Can you please send back my Beta tape when you are finished with looking at the footage as I need it to record some episodes of Mash in the coming weeks. I hear on the grapevine that the series is about to end soon. Thanking you most kindly, Obadiah

Of note was the different DOTVW classes compared to this year’s event. Current members in the points were Michael Clark in Baja Class, Kim Whittles/Bill Malkoutzis in Standard Water-Cooled and Lloyd Davies in a Type 2.
NOV
2011
MICHAEL CRONIN was the Club President, Lloyd Davies was Vice President, Lyn Davies was Secretary and John Farlow was Treasurer.
The Club general meetings were held on the third Thursday of the month, at the Royal Standard Hotel, in West Melbourne.
Part 2 of Historian's Corner – November. I hope you enjoy these and please feel free to contact me if you can help in developing the documentation of our history. RAOULL ALLEMEND was the Club President, Geoff Mentiplay was Vice President and Treasurer, John Pinkerton was Secretary/New Members Officer, Steve Johansen was Social Secretary and Peter Clark was Editor/Printer.
NOV
1976
The highlight of this month’s activities was a big Motorsport program. It started with the Last Club Championship for 1976 Motorkhana on the 7th, the Cerebrus Twilight Autocross and finished with the ‘Alpine Trial” described and known as the GALA event in the Victorian Rally calendar! THE ‘NEWS’ carried great articles about all things Volkswagen and VWCV: Following the regular president’s Report from Raoull was the Adam & Eve trial report with Stuart Stevenson and Geoff Mentiplay coming in 20th Outright and earned a trophy from Mentone Motors for the first Volkswagen home. Other articles featured Geoff again with Backyard Tips on Adjusting Tappets and constructing a Beetle Parcel Shelf. Other reports included the Treasurer declaring the books balanced but only $56.76 left after all ex-

penses paid and an interesting report from ‘Ronnie’ Adams on her frustrating experience at the Adam & Eve Trial.
STEVE KOSA was the Club President, Mark Zellner was Vice President, Max Bonney was Secretary, Neil Tattersall was Treasurer, Neil Walker was Group 5 Delegate/ Competition Secretary and Michael Clark was Editor; and the committee was all up for re-election. This is a very light edition of Wagensville News! Basically, it has results of competition and Day of the Volkswagen – very reminiscent of the content produced within broadsheets published in later part of the last decade.
NOV
1984
THIS ISSUE OF THE ‘NEWS’ carried the President’s Report with thanks to those members helping out for DOTVW, the upcoming Annual General Meeting where Steve had to step down due to personal and business commitments and details of the Alpine Rally that the VWCV had supported for the last 15 years with rally officials. Other articles gave about progress towards the Club Championship which was still led by Max Bonney, Cameron Stewart led the Motorkhana and Max the Speed Event Championship. VWCV championship for New Members was led by M. Blomquist from a field of 20 members (pretty good for 1984!).
The highlights of November that year were the preparation for the Annual Xmas Party at Lloyd’s Man Cave, (fortunately still enjoyed this year) and the outline of a 2012 program which looked fairly limited by today’s busy schedule. NOTABLY THE ‘NEWS’ ran a great profile on our new Life Member – Fran Oliver. Fran joined our club in 1992 but her enthusiasm for Volkswagens stemmed from learning to drive in her late husband’s first 1961 Beetle. He went on to own a 1963 Type 3 Notchback, which Fran remembers was much easier to drive than the Beetle. Fran bought her 1972 Radar Red Notch (same year and colour as the Historian’s Fasty) in 1980 and it was a daily driver until she retired in 1993 and took up a more active role for many years on the committee of our club. Fran was very honoured and proud to receive her life membership from Club president, Michael Cronin at the 2011 Day of the Volkswagen. Look forward to seeing you all at the next VWCV event!

WALKING NOT DUBBING
23RD OCT 2016
MEMBERSHIPS UPDATE FIRSTLY, I WOULD LIKE TO THANK ANDREW MENGYEL FOR HIS WORK THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS AS MEMBERSHIP OFFICER. The last 12 months as Assistant Membership Officer has taught me a lot and given me the insight into the amount of time and effort needed to keep memberships up to date in what is a volunteer position, as are all committee positions.
THIS YEAR I SET MYSELF A PERSONAL CHALLENGE TO DO SOMETHING I HAD NEVER ACHIEVED AND TO PUSH PERSONAL LIMITS. I found the challenge in the 35km walk event titled, THE BLOODY LONG WALK. 100% of profits go to support patient support, research and education/ awareness programmes into Mitochondrial disease (MITO) which is a debilitating and potentially fatal disease that reduces the ability of the mitochondria to produce energy. When the mitochondria are not working properly, cells begin to die until eventually whole organ systems fail and life itself is compromised. Approximately 1 in 200 Australians will carry the mitochondrial genetic defect. I mentioned the walk to a few VWCV members and soon there was 6 of us signed up to do the walk, they were Andrew Ermel (VWCV President), Mike Cronin (VWCV Vice President), Katia Sayssauk, Naomi Christie, Andrea Green (Ballarat President) and myself. We set ourselves 12 weeks of training.
BETWEEN US ALL WE RAISED $1,989.25 FOR THE CHARITY. The morning started wet, cold and dark, we were supposed to be dropped off by Chris Jeffes in Andrew’s 1965 splitty, known as Red Bus, but instead opted for the comfort of my 2013 Golf. The walk commenced at Yarra Bend Trail but was delayed by an hour due to dangerous trail conditions due to overnight storms & flooding and had to be rerouted. Whilst waiting for the walk to commence we all enjoyed our feet going numb with the cold in the damp, soft and mushy grass. I joked at the time “Whose idea was this?” Ironically, it was mine.

Wagensville News
The walk was visually stunning, but more so was the mate-ship as the six of us set off together, we made a pact that as we started as a team and we would finish as a team. Katia was a champion as she had the foresight to organise ponchos for everyone. Everyone came prepared with snacks and water. We achieved the 35km walk in just under 7 hours and 15 minutes and the actual distance walked was 36.5 km due to the change in route. The walk wasn’t the easiest, but I think due to all the training done prior to the walk, we romped it in. No injuries and we enjoyed the challenge. There was a cheering team waiting for us at the finish line at St Kilda Sea Baths. This consisted of Kellie and Tayla Handicoot, Chris Jeffes and Red Bus. I would love to give a heartfelt thank you to the club, members within the club, friends and family that have donated money to this very worthy cause. I’m now looking forward to a new challenge and encourage members to not be afraid to try new things and ask those around you and they just might join you on your quest.

I currently own with my partner Chris Jeffes, a ’65 Karmann Ghia T34 (my dream car), a ’57 big back window Beetle, a pop top T4 Camper and my daily driver is a Golf 7. I love working on all our cars as much as the boys and have learnt so much about the history of VW’s and what basics I need to keep it driving well. I look forward to the next 12 months as Membership Officer and encourage all members to consider what they can do to assist their club. I can honestly say you get so much more when you give a bit of yourself.
