PARTY CRASHERS:South defeated USC Lion in the men’s last weekend.

Knights snap losing streak

N

orthern Knights snapped a two-game losing streak with victory over USC Lion in their men’s State League reserves clash at Mt Lofty Sports Centre on Saturday. The Knights had dropped from the top four following backto-back losses before the long weekend break, and made a sluggish start as Lion claimed the opening set. Northern improved their defensive efforts, coming up with a number of crucial blocks as they got on a roll in the second set. Ryan Bray was impressive for Northern as they rounded out the contest in four sets to close within a win of fourth-placed Mt Lofty. Meanwhile, the Knights’ women saw their winless season continue as they fell 3-1 to Lion. Despite claiming the opening set against first-placed USC, Northern slumped to a tenth loss for 2013.

BY DAVID PENROSE and ELLIOT KING

enley Hawks have found the consistency they were looking for earlier in the season - securing a fourth straight win in the men’s competition. Unable to claim back-to-back wins in the early rounds, the Hawks are flying.

S

outh Adelaide’s men have spoiled the 60th anniversary celebrations of USC Lion with a five-set victory in their match at Brighton Secondary School last Friday night. South prevailed in a tight opening set, before Lion took control in the second as they established a 2-1 advantage. But keen to overcome their fierce rivals, South recovered to

complete a come-from-behind victory. Josh Hixon was dominant for South as they fought back, while Brendan Clewes helped Lion establish their 2-1 lead in his return to State League. Meanwhile, Lion maintained their unbeaten start to the women’s season with an emphatic 3-1 victory over a winless South outfit.

orwood Bears capped off their ninth win of the State League season, defeating Austral Phoenix in straight sets at Mt Lofty Sports Centre last Saturday. The Bears were clinical as they dismantled the Austral contingent with an overpowering offensive display. Imposing blocking and consistent aggression in the front court saw the Bears notch

up their second win over the Phoenix this season as Sam Halliday was again a standout for Norwood. Despite the best efforts of Austral captain Fraser Smith, the loss leaves Phoenix floundering at the bottom of the ladder. The Norwood league women were also victorious over Austral, clinching their sixth win from ten games.

enley Hawks have retained second position in the men’s State League competition, defeating Mt Lofty 3-1 at Mt Lofty Sports Centre on Saturday. The Hawks took command early, asserting their dominance through the bruising offence of Matt Jones and Travis Moran. Ben Sawon injected some life into the Mt Lofty team, assisting the uncontainable Sam Boehm

as they took the third set. However, their resurgence was short lived with the Hawks rallying to claim the fourth set, sealing their sixth win of the season. Meanwhile, Henley’s women suffered a straight sets loss to Mt Lofty, leaving them fourth on the table after ten rounds of the season.

MATCH OF THE ROUND (FRIDAY 08:30PM)

NORWOOD BEARS VS HENLEY HAWKS

CHARITY ROUND

Henley put their winning streak on the line in a top-of-the-table Friday night blockbuster at Brighton Secondary School. After being unable to string together back-to-back wins in the opening six weeks of the season, the Hawks have won four on the trot. Amongst those results, an impressive win over Mt Lofty last weekend, and victories over Austral, USC, and bogey side South Adelaide. Henley’s last loss came against the Bears, and they will be keen to gain revenge and push their premiership claims against the top side. The Hawks offence combined well in the win against Lofty, with Travis Moran continuing his run of good form. The Bears have bounced back from their only defeat of 2013, winning their last two contests. Sam White has been impressive for Norwood in recent rounds. MATCH OF THE ROUND (FRIDAY 07:00PM)

NORWOOD BEARS VS HENLEY HAWKS

Since their last meeting, in round six, the Bears have surged ahead of the Hawks to sit third with six wins compared to four. Henley’s only win in the period was against winless South, and the Hawks are at risk of being overtaken by Austral on the road to the finals. A win here is important for the Hawks, with Austral facing USC Lion, before the two go head-to-head next round. It gives Henley a genuine chance to open a gap over the chasing Phoenix. Norwood has lost only once in its last six matches, claiming an impressive win against Lofty while only losing to Lion. The form of Kelly van der Linde has been a driving force during that strech, with Bonnie Poulter performing well consistently also. The Hawks can take some confidence from a round one over the Bears into what could be another five-set battle. RECENT RESULTS: NORWOOD 4, HENLEY 1 (SINCE 2012) RD 06, 2013 RD 01, 2013 RD 15, 2012

In honour of Lewis McPherson

R

ound 11 of the 2013 State League season has added importance, with Volleyball SA dedicating the round to a charity which has a close link with the Volleyball community. Following its successful inception last year, the 2013 version of Charity Round will raise funds for the Sammy D Foundation, while promoting awareness of the foundation and its aims. The Sammy D Foundation, formed after Sam was the victim of a violent assault in 2008, has used a tragic incident to promote and engage a positive change. The foundation has a heavy commitment to educating young people and stopping aggressive and violent behaviour amongst our youth. It is a cause close to the hearts of the South Australian Volleyball community, which itself was rocked by tragedy at the start of the year following the loss of one of its own, Lewis McPherson. Lewis, a Brighton Secondary School student, was an important player at USC Lion, winning a number awards and playing in their 2012 Men’s reserves premiership winning side after starting with the club in year eight. “His commitment to volleyball and USC Lion was never questioned as he was always wanting to learn and provide support to others,” Liam Trewartha, Lewis’ close mate, said. He was a very popular figure in the volleyball community, as

shown at the time of his passing right up until this weekend as the volleyball community honours him. Volleyball has taken a back seat as the State League clubs play a role to help raise funds for a truly terrific cause. Since their tragic loss, the McPherson family has been supported by the Sammy D Foundation. It is a relationship which has a strong mutual understanding, having both gone through the grief associated with loss, and with Sam and Lewis sharing strong similarities. Both victims were young, happy, outgoing, enjoyed a love of sport, and touched the lives of many. “Lewis was a great character full of life and would always bring a smile with him that was infectious on other people,” Liam said. Brought together under tragic circumstances, the Sammy D Foundation and the McPherson family are working together to stop such a tragedy from happening again. As a result of the support they have received, the McPherson family chose the Sammy D Foundation as the charity for this years charity round. It was a decision Volleyball SA fully supported, and has gone to great extents to promote. This weekend provides the Volleyball community a chance to honour LewMac, and repay the Sammy D Foundation for their continued support of the McPherson family.
