NORTHERN KNIGHTS

Knights men drop to fifth

M

t Lofty has put an end to Northern Knights’ twogame winning streak with a 3-2 victory in their men’s State League reserves contest at Mt Lofty Sports Centre last Saturday. Northern were looking to cement their spot in the top four following victories over Austral and USC Lion in the past fortnight, and started well claiming the opening two sets. But Lofty recovered, sealing a comeback victory with a 15-11 win in the fifth set. Alan Bough was best for the Knights, as they dropped to fifth-place ahead of a clash with sixth-placed Henley next round. Meanwhile, the Knights’ women will be looking for their first victory in a bottom-of-thetable battle with Henley, after falling to Mt Lofty 3-0. Sara Dennis was impressive for the losing Knights.

he first five rounds of the 2013 State League season is in the record books, with each team now having faced all opposition. While Norwood (men) and USC Lion (women) are out in front, the rest of the league is chasing them hard.

N

orwood has continued its early dominance of the men’s State League season, defeating Austral 3-1 at Brighton Secondary School last Friday. After a tight first set the Bears cruised to a two-set advantage before Phoenix edged their way back into the contest in the third. The power hitting of Sam Halliday and Chris Butterworth sealed the Bears a fifth

consecutive victory, despite the best efforts of Austral’s Rhys Wood and Grant Mutton. It was a successful night for Norwood, with their women securing a straight-sets victory over Phoenix. Promising youngster Kelly van der Linde performed well yet again, as Norwood’s women moved into the top four with their second victory of 2013.

eigning premiers Mt Lofty have recorded their first win of the men’s State League season, overcoming Henley 3-1 at Mt Lofty Sports Centre on Saturday. Henley were looking to string back-to-back wins together for the first time in 2013, but dropped the opening two sets against a Lofty outfit desperate for victory.

The Hawks fought back to claim a tight third-set, but were unable to go on with it as Mt Lofty recovered to win the match in four sets. Marcus Jones was amongst the best for Henley, while Tony Scott was a key in Lofty securing their first win. Meanwhile, Henley’s women were also defeated as Mt Lofty prevailed 3-1 to inflict the Hawks second loss of the season.

outh Adelaide has maintained the pressure on first-placed Norwood in the men’s State League, after disposing of USC Lion 3-1 at Mt Lofty Sports Centre on Saturday. South opened up a two-set advantage as Luke Bonser and London Olympian Nathan Roberts - against his former club - played pivotal roles, before holding off a Lion fightback to

win in four sets. After opening the season 2-0, Lion slumped to their thirdconsecutive loss despite the best efforts of Jordan Davis. There was better news for USC’s women as they crushed bottomplaced South in straight-sets to stretch their winning streak to five-games. Emma McEwen was solid for Lion, while Vicki Wright worked tirelessly for South.

MATCH OF THE ROUND (SATURDAY 2pm)

MT LOFTY VS SOUTH ADELAIDE

Mt Lofty took a step in the right direction last weekend, winning their first match of the season as their team gets back to full strength. But to secure consecutive wins they will need to overcome a South Adelaide side which has made a bright start to the season. South are hot on the heels of undefeated Norwood, and are looking to move to 5-1 with a victory today. South themselves have been strengthened in recent weeks, with London Olympian Nathan Roberts playing in South’s victories over Austral and USC Lion in the past fortnight. Tony Scott continued his solid start to the season last week, as Lofty were able to overcome Henley in four sets to claim win number one. South will be looking to repeat their round one effort, when they knocked off the reigning premiers 3-1 in the season-opener. It was an impressive effort as South piled the pressure on Mt Lofty. MATCH OF THE ROUND (SATURDAY 2pm)

NORWOOD BEARS VS HENLEY HAWKS

After missing the finals in 2012, both Norwood and Henley look to have made ground in 2013 as they sit inside the top four after five rounds. Henley have bolstered their side with the inclusion of Zina Stone, Becchara Palmer, Heike Jensen and Zoe Lambeff. And it has had a postive impact with the Hawks 3-2, and third on the ladder. While Henley have dropped their past two matches, Norwood cruised to a straight-sets victory over Austral Phoenix in round four to secure a second win of the season. Young Kelly van der Linde was dominant for the Bears, as they leapfrogged Phoenix on the table. Henley won the round one clash between the sides in five-sets, with Zina Stone causing the Bears problems. Van der Linde was amongst the best for Norwood on that day also.
