NORTHERN KNIGHTS

Knights bounce back from loss

T

HE Northern Knights have bounced back from a round five defeat, overcoming Henley in their men’s State League reserves clash at Mt Lofty Sports Centre last Saturday. Northern prevailed in a tight opening set before wearing the Hawks down with aggressive hitting. The straight-sets victory saw the Knights move into fourthplace, with a 3-4 record, after six rounds. Matt Grace was again a key figure for the Knights, as they enter their round seven bye on a winning note. The Knights’ women will be searching for their first win after the bye, after dropping a fourset contest against Henley. Henley won the opening two sets, before Northern fought back. But despite the best efforts of Miriam Bourke the Knights fell short of a maiden victory.

STAGE SET FOR TOP-OF-THETABLE CLASHES IN ROUND 7

A

BY DAVID PENROSE and ELLIOT KING

s the State League season nears its halfway point, the top-two in both the men’s and women’s competitions have opened up breaks over their nearest rivals. Round seven sees first play second, in potential Grand Final previews.

U

SC Lion improved to 6-0 in the women’s State League after surviving a scare from Austral Phoenix at Brighton Secondary School on Friday night. After dropping only two sets through the first five rounds, USC looked set to continue its dominance as it claimed the first two sets. But fifth-placed Phoenix fought back to level the match at 2-2,

before Lion held on in a gripping contest. Olivia Orchard played a key role for Lion, while Karola Laventure was heavily involved for Austral. Earlier USC’s men snapped a three-game losing streak, defeating Austral in straight-sets. Cedric Legrand was dominant for USC as they moved into thirdplace after six rounds. David Carey performed well for Austral.

outh Adelaide’s men have stretched their winning streak to four-games, defeating Mt Lofty in their State League clash at Mt Lofty Sports Centre on Saturday. Lofty started in devastating fashion, as they looked to build on their maiden victory of the season, claiming the first set 2511. Inspired by Olympian Nathan

Roberts, South responded to claim the contest in four sets and improve their season record to 5-1 ahead of a round seven match-up with first-placed Norwood. Simon Gray was impressive for Lofty, as they fell to 1-5 in 2013. South’s women were no match for Mt Lofty, slumping to 0-6 after a straight sets defeat to the 2012 Grand Finalists.

orwood Bears continued their winning start to the men’s State League season, defeating Henley Hawks in a tense round six clash at Mt Lofty Sports Centre on Saturday. The Bears looked to be in ominous form from the opening point, exploding to a 25-13 first set win. But the Hawks, with the assistance of beach volleyball

star Casey Grice, fired back to even the contest and set up an entertaining five set battle. London Olympian Harrison Peacock was a major contributor, while a Sam White serving run sealed the Bears their sixth win on the trot. Norwood’s women were also victorious, with emerging talent Kelly van der Linde playing an important role in the five set win.

MATCH OF THE ROUND (SATURDAY 2pm)

SOUTH ADELAIDE VS NORWOOD BEARS

South Adelaide and Norwood met in a heated round two contest, with the Bears prevailing in four sets at Brighton Secondary School. Since that battle, neither side has lost, setting the stage for a blockbuster contest between the first and second-placed men’s sides. While Norwood will look to extend their unbeaten start to the season to seven games, South will be looking to win their fifth-straight to join the Bears with a 6-1 record. They will need to win without the ever-impressive Nathan Roberts, with his 2013 State League stint coming to an end as he returns to the AIS in Canberra. Norwood were pushed the distance by Henley last week, surviving a tense fifth set to maintain their unbeaten streak. Cooper Peacock was impressive for the Bears, but they will need a solid team-effort to continue their streak against South. RECENT RESULTS: NORWOOD 4, SOUTH 0 (SINCE 2012) RD 02, 2013

MATCH OF THE ROUND (FRIDAY 7pm)

USC LION VS MT LOFTY

USC Lion and Mt Lofty renew their rivalry, sitting in a familiar position on top of the women’s State League competition. Lion gained bragging rights in round two, winning their grand final rematch as they did the 2012 grand final. USC got off to a fast-start, before a tight-struggle in the second set. Lofty then dominated the third set, winning the first eight points as they won the set 25-18. The fourth set was a complete reversal as Lion held on to win their fourth-straight against Lofty. Both sides have won all their contests since round two, as they stamp their dominance on the women’s competition. USC have built a 6-0 record on the back of consistency, with last week’s 3-2 victory a rare challenge for the premiers, who have been well served by Emma McEwen, Olivia Orchard and Rebecca Reeve in 2013. While Hannah Ross has been dominant in Lofty’s wins in 2013. RECENT RESULTS: USC LION 4, MT LOFTY 2 (SINCE 2012) RD 02, 2013

S

outh Adelaide has improved its winning streak to sixgames in the women’s State League reserves, defeating Austral Phoenix 3-1 at Mt Lofty Sports Centre last Saturday. To improve to 7-0, South will need to defeat rivals USC Lion, who are also undefeated after

six rounds of the season. Lion defeated Mt Lofty in straight-sets, and sit second on the ladder having played one less game than South. In the men’s reserves, Mt Lofty and South kept the pressure on Norwood with round six wins. The Bears had the bye.
