The Breakdown Once again, Tennessee and Florida square off to start their respective Southeastern Conference schedules. The Vols lead the all-time series 11-9 in Knoxville, but the Gators have won the last two meetings at Neyland Stadium. Saturday’s game starts at 3:30 p.m. Eastern and will be televised on CBS.

For Starters: SEC Openers Familiar Beginning

Since the 1996 season, the Vols and Gators have traditionally kicked off their SEC schedules against each other. The only year they did not meet to start conference play was in 2001, when the game was postponed to December because of the September 11 terrorist attacks. The Gators have won the last five meetings and lead the all-time series 20-19, although the Vols still have the advantage in Knoxville by an 11-9 count. Also to note: since 1996, every Tennessee-Florida game has been televised by CBS. Saturday’s game also will be broadcast by the network.

Poole Leads Conference

Junior tailback Tauren Poole has certainly made the most of his opportunity to start for the Vols. Poole leads the SEC with 136 rushing yards per game following his career-best 162 yards against Oregon. Poole rushed for 111 yards in the first quarter against the Ducks, more than New Mexico’s offense managed the entire game against them (109 yards).

Tennessee Media Policies The following is a list of media policies for the 2010 Tennessee football season. Members of the media are expected to adhere to these policies, as they are put in place to allow student-athletes adequate time to devote to their school work and their team commitments. It should be noted that true freshmen will not be available for interviews. Interviews with Derek Dooley and the assistant coaches should be coordinated through Associate AD Jimmy Stanton. All player interview requests should be made through Associate SID John Painter or Graduate Assistant Andrew Lentz at least 24 hours in advance. The Neyland-Thompson Sports Center is for studentathletes and Tennessee Athletics staff and members of the media should not be in the facility (outside of scheduled practices) unless by appointment through the office of media relations. All post-practice interviews will take place on Haslam Field, or in the case of an indoor practice, insde the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center. A working space for media is available in Stokely Athletics Center adjacent to the media relations office.

 Game Day All Tennessee post-game press conferences will be held in the Stokely Family Media Center, located in the northwest corner of Neyland Stadium near Gate 25. The press conference will begin with head coach Derek Dooley 10-15 minutes after each home game. Coach Dooley will be followed by selected players. A member of the Tennessee Media Relations staff will escort all media down to the media center when there are five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.  Sundays Game highlights from the previous day’s contest are available from the Derek Dooley show from 9-10 a.m. A system test will be made at 8:45 a.m. and there is no programming on open dates. Please credit IMG College/Vol Network for video use. Head coach Derek Dooley will be available each Sunday evening for a teleconference beginning at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the previous game. In our weekly chat with the always colorful senior Chris Walker, the defensive end talks about the “DLine U Choir.” Much like being on the football team, you have to show up to practice and take it seriously.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW ? Eddie Brown • DB • 1971-73

Eddie Brown (1971-73), who earned team captain and All-America honors as a defensive back at UT in 1973, is currently a sales representative for Jostens. In one of his more memorable games versus Kansas that season, Brown returned an interception 74 yards and had his teeth knocked out while blocking a field goal before returning to help the Vols preserve a 28-27 victory. We caught up with the former standout in this week’s edition of “Where are they now?” and spoke with him about that game among other things. Q: What are you doing now for a living? A: “I work for Jostens, the class ring graduation supply company and, I’ve been with them for 25 years. I’m a sales rep. I go to all the high schools in east Tennessee and make presentations to them about class rings and sell class rings. I do the same thing with graduation supplies; announcements, caps and gowns, and diplomas.” Q: What do you remember most about that game against Kansas in 1973? A: “We went into the ball game and David Jaynes, the quarterback for Kansas, sort of called us out and said he was going to throw for 500 yards. We went into it knowing it was going to be a wide-open type of ball game and he ended up throwing for something like 367 yards (394), which wasn’t quite 500 but a pretty good day. I had an interception and didn’t run it all the way back for a touchdown, but got it back down for us to score. I played about 20 years of football and there were two plays I didn’t have a mouthpiece in. That particular play when I got my teeth knocked out was one of those plays. On third down, the guy that generally rushed field goals got hurt. I was captain of the defense so I said ‘Well, I’ll rush.’ I told the other guys what to do and I rushed. I actually saw the laces of the ball turn up and it hit me right in the face. I didn’t think much about it. It was sort of numb at the time. I rolled over, looked for the ball and it went out of bounds. Then I started spitting teeth out. I went to the sidelines and the trainer looked at my mouth and I about made him sick. The head trainer came over and he said ‘Just put your mouthpiece in and don’t ever take it out. Just leave it in.’ I had two nerves hanging down. It was numb for awhile, but then the feeling started coming back in about five minutes. I played the rest of the ball game and kept my mouthpiece in until actually the next morning when I went to the dentist.” Q: What was your favorite memory as a Vol? A: “Being elected the team captain by my teammates. When your teammates elect you the team captain, that’s about as high an honor as you can get in my opinion.”

FRESHMAN FOCUS with Jacques Smith DE • Ooltewah • Marketing Q: What was something you didn’t know about UT until you got here on your visit? JS: “The rich tradition that UT has. I didn’t know about the post-game song and the pre-game rituals like Gen. Neyland’s seven Maxims. Of course, everyone knew about running through the T, but that just added so much more to the experience.” Q: How excited are you for your first major rivalry game against Florida? JS: “I don’t know about any of the rest of the 2010 guys, but I’ve been waiting on this game for about two-and-ahalf years. I remember sitting in the stands for my first Florida game here at UT as a recruit and watching the guys, and watching Tim Tebow getting hit and making big plays on us. It’s been a couple years that I’ve seen Tennessee and Florida go back and forth, and I’m glad I’ll finally be able to get on the field and do something about it. I can’t wait, and it’s going to be a good game.” Q: What’s your favorite thing about college? JS: “The best thing about college is probably meeting people. I’m a sociable type of guy. If someone says my name, I’m saying ‘What’s up?’ back and I’m getting to know everyone. College is a learning experience, and I’m here to learn as much and do as much on the field as I can.” Q: What are the best parts about game day? JS: “The second coolest thing about game day is going out for warm-ups and there’s no one in the stadium, and then coming back out when you’re fully dressed and the stadium is full with 100,000 people yelling and screaming. The coolest thing is running through the T.”

CW: “We’ve got the little D-Line U choir. We’ve got auditions. People have to audition to get in. We have rehearsals so they have to come to rehearsal. If they don’t, they can’t sing in the D-Line U choir. We put a couple people on probation from Media Day. Minor Bowens is one of them. He’s on probation from the choir. He’s just got to come to rehearsal. He didn’t come to one rehearsal and tried to jump into the show. You can’t do that.”

9/18 in UT Football History  Times Played: Six (vs. Army 1965/UCSB 1971/TCU 1976 vs. Florida 1993, 99, & 2004)  Record: 4-2  Most Memorable Moment/Game: In front of a Neyland Stadium record crowd of 109,061, James Wilhoit kicked a 50-yard field goal with six seconds remaining to give No. 13 Tennessee a 30-28 victory versus No. 11 Florida in 2004. Just three minutes prior, Erik Ainge and the Vols pieced together an 80-yard touchdown drive to pull within 28-27 before Wilhoit missed the extra point. The kicker was set up for redemption, however, after a personal foul penalty forced the Gators to punt. Taking over at the UT 39 with 43 seconds remaining, Ainge and Chris Hannon connected through the air on gains of 21 and seven before Ainge spiked the ball to give Wilhoit a chance to win the game.  Notable: • Stanley Morgan (1973-76) and Larry Seivers (1974-76): Morgan compiled 201 receiving yards vs. TCU, tying the fourth-highest mark in Vols history, while Seivers tallied 103. It’s the only time in UT history that one receiver has topped 200 receiving yards while another Vol has hit triple digits in the same game. • Dennis Wolfe (1976-78): Registered three sacks vs. TCU which is tied for the second-best individual effort in Vols’ history. • Billy Williams (1993-94): Tied the UT record with three receiving TDs vs. Florida in 1993, a feat matched by just seven others. Also notched 140 yards.

Hosting the Best

For the first time in program history, the Vols will host two teams ranked in the national top 10 in consecutive weeks at Neyland Stadium. Oregon was ranked seventh and eighth by the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Poll respectively. Florida is ranked 10th and seventh by those organizations, coming into Knoxville with wins over Miami (Ohio) and South Florida.

For just the ninth time in Tennessee football history and just the third since 1978, the Vols will open up their season with four consecutive games in Knoxville. Tennessee holds a 26-9 (.743) record in those games. In two years (1915 & 1977), the Vols defended their home field for a UT-record five games before hitting the road. First Start (Sort Of)

In addition to Miller making his first start, sophomore wide receiver Zach Rogers also entered the offensive starting lineup in place of injured senior Gerald Jones (hand).

Sophomore Marsalis Teague made his first defensive start at cornerback, but it not his first time in the lineup. Teague made six starts at wide receiver as a freshman last year.

LIncoln Moving up the Charts

Senior Daniel Lincoln enters Saturday’s game just seven field goals shy of tying John Becksvoort (1991-94) for fifth on the Vols’ career field goal list. Lincoln has started since his freshman season of 2007, a year he earned All-America honors. Lincoln has made all four field goal attempts this season, including a 48-yard kick against Oregon. The victory over UT Martin marked the Vols’ 600th program win played inside the state of Tennessee. Of the 600, 429 of those wins have come at Neyland Stadium.

Happy Birthday, Vol Walk

This season, the Tennessee game day tradition of the Vol Walk celebrates its 20th anniversary. Then head coach Johnny Majors started the official Saturday march to Neyland Stadium prior to the Alabama game on Oct. 20, 1990. In 1989, the team walked unofficially to the games from Bill Gibbs Dormitory. That phenomenon caught on with fans. Tennessee vs. Florida Alabama game in 1990. The start of the Vol Walk has been moved back this year to the corner of Volunteer Boulevard and Lake Loudoun Boulevard to allow fans in the C-8 parking area to welcome the team. The team members will then gather at Circle Park, where they will pay homage to the Torchbearer and the spirit of service to others that it represents. Following the team’s visit to the Volunteer Statue, the team will proceed down Peyton Manning Pass, and then left onto Phillip Fulmer Way. The Vol Walk begins two hours and 15 minutes before each home Tennessee football game.

Nine Vols with Diplomas Ranks Third

As the 2010 season looms, nine Vols will suit up as graduates of Tennessee. Chad Cunningham, Daniel Lincoln, Cody Pope, Nick Reveiz, Jarrod Shaw, Luke Stocker, Victor Thomas, LaMarcus Thompson and Tyler Wolf all earned their college degrees before the 2010 football season. With nine active graduates slated for action this season, Tennessee is third in the nation behind Boston College (14) and Auburn (11). Kansas State, Virginia Tech and UCF are tied with eight.

Watch Lists

Luke Stocker is on the watch list for the John Mackey Award, given annually to the nation’s best tight end. Chris Walker is one of 36 candidates for the Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award. Among many other awards, Eric Berry won the Jim Thorpe Award last season and was a finalist for both the Bronko Nagurski and Lott Trophy awards.

Junior tailback Tauren Poole ran wild in the first half against Oregon, running for 140 yards on 15 carries. In the first quarter, he had rushes for 39, 31 and 23 yards. Rebuilt Line

Center Cody Pope, offensive tackles Dallas Thomas and Ju’Wuan James and offensive guard JerQuari Schofield all made their starting lineup debut in the season opener. For a new O-line, the Vols were effective in assisting the Vols rushing game against UT Martin. Tennessee rolled up 332 total rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns. The Vols finished with 182 rushing yards against Oregon.

Herald Gerald

Although currently sidelined with a hand injury, senior wideout Gerald Jones is approaching the top 10 in two main receiving categories in the UT record books. With 93 catches under his belt, Jones needs 21 receptions to slide past Lucas Taylor (2005-08) into the top 10 for career receptions. The standout receiver, who has amassed 1,200 receiving yards in three years, can also move into the top 10 in career receiving yards. Donte’ Stallworth (1999-2001) is 10th on the list with 1,747. Cooper enjoyed a breakout season as a receiving option last year, catching 12 passes with an average of 9.2 yards per catch. The Chattanooga native caught his first career touchdown on a two-yard pass against South Carolina last year.

Simms’ Debut

Junior Matt Simms made his debut at quarterback against UT Martin, completing 14 of 24 passes for 181 yards and 1 touchdown. He followed up that performance by completing 15 passes for 151 yards and an interception against Oregon.

Stock(er) Market Rising

Senior tight end Luke Stocker looks to have a breakout season after improving his numbers each season since he began his playing career at UT in 2007 and finishing 2009 with a flurry. In his junior slate, Stocker’s numbers increased by 16 receptions, 250 yards, and five touchdowns. Good to Be Home

The Vols had little problem posting high point totals last season at Neyland Stadium and opened the 2010 season posting 50 points in their shutout win against UT Martin. They scored at least 30 points in six of eight home games in 2009, posting a season-high 63 points in the opener against Western Kentucky. The other 30+ point performances at home include Memphis (56), Georgia (45), Ohio (34), South Carolina (31) and Vanderbilt (31). Tennessee has lost only two games at home when scoring at least 30 points: a 3531 loss to Georgia in 1973 and a 43-30 loss to Florida in 1984. All told, the Vols have only lost seven total games total and tied one other when scoring at least 30 points. The Vols are 324-7-1 (.977) all-time when scoring at least 30 points.

Notes on Defense/Special Teams Waggner Pacing Big Orange D

Sophomore defensive back Prentiss Waggner has emerged as one of the Vols defensive leaders. Through two games, Waggner leads the Vols with 13 tackles. Against Oregon, Waggner set a new career-best mark with seven tackles, including one for a loss of three yards. The Clinton, La., native also recovered a fumble and broke up a pass in the Vols contest with the Ducks. In the Vols opener against UT Martin, Waggner intercepted a Derek Carr pass and returned it 54 yards for a Tennessee touchdown.

Freshmen Impact

Seven freshmen have seen time on defense for Tennessee through two games: Eric Gordon, Brent Brewer, Jerod Askew, John Propst, Jacques Smith, Corey Miller and Arthur Jeffery. The seven combined for 15 tackles, including two for loss. Smith has led the way through two games, wrapping up five solo tackles, including two for a combined loss of seven yards.

Miller, Teague Earns First Starts

True-freshman defensive tackle Corey Miller earned his first start against Oregon. The Wellford, S.C., native recorded two tackles against the Ducks. Marsalis Teague started for the sixth time as a Vol and first on defense in the Vols’ loss to Oregon. After switching from receiver to defensive back during the off-season, Teague has made an immediate impact. The Paris native recorded six tackles against the Ducks, bringing his season total to seven.

Reveiz Back in the Saddle

After his junior season ended earlier than expected due to injury, senior Nick Reveiz made his return to the playing field against UT Martin for the first time since Sept. 26, 2009. The gritty walk-on turned scholarship player has transformed into one of the Vols leaders on and off the field. During the 32 games Reveiz has played thus far in his career on The Hill, he has recorded 71 total tackles. Against the Ducks, the Farragut native had a career-best and team-leading 10 tackles, including one for a four-yard loss.

Keeping Up with Johnson

During his career as a Vol, Austin Johnson has seen action in 20 games. However, the Vols’ lidlifter with UT Martin marked a first for the Hickory, N.C., native, as it was the first time he lined up on the defensive side of the ball. Through two games, Johnson has collected nine tackles, including one in the end zone against UT Martin that gave the Vols their first safety since the

UCLA game on Sept. 12, 2009. He also had an interception that ended a Skyhawks drive in the third quarter and setup a touchdown for the Big Orange.

Hughes’ Havoc

Sophomore nose tackle Montori Hughes is developing a reputation as a fearsome pass rusher. Since head coach Derek Dooley praised Hughes’ effort heading into the Vols’ opener with UT Martin, the Murfreesboro, Tenn., native has filled his stat columns. Through two games, Hughes boasts seven tackles, 3.5 for loss (total of 10 yards), including a four-yard sack. He has two quarterback hurries and has broken up one pass.

Diamond to Gridiron

Defensive back Brent Brewer is not your typical freshman. He signed a professional baseball contract in 2006 with the Milwaukee Brewers out of Sandy Creek High School in Georgia, turning his back on a promising football career at Florida State. The second-round draft pick spent five years as a shortstop in the Brewers’ organization. Now, the former high school wide receiver has found a home at Tennessee as a defensive back, where he currently is slotted at second-string strong safety behind Prentiss Waggner.

Kicking Up a Storm

Senior placekicker Daniel Lincoln earned starting PK duties and will attempt to cement his mark in the Big Orange record books. With two field goals against Oregon, the Ocala, Fla., native lacks just seven more to tie John Becksvoort for fifth place on the all-time Vols leaderboard. In his career as a four year starter at Tennessee, Lincoln has scored 249 points on 114 PATs and 45 field goals. With a team-leading 7 points against the Ducks, Lincoln closes the gap in the all-time scoring ranking at Tennessee. He currently ranks seventh all-time in career scoring, just 43 points outside of the top five (Alex Walls at 292). Through two games, Lincoln has scored a team-leading 19 points on four field goals and seven PATs. Lincoln’s career long field goal of 49 yards came in last season’s win over South Carolina on Oct. 31.

Punt, Chad! Punt!

Chad Cunningham enters his senior season having secured the starting punter spot. During his career on The Hill, the Dawsonville, Ga., native has 16 punts for 50 yards or more, including a career-best 58-yarder against Alabama in 2009. His 41.2-yard career average entering the 2010 season is on pace to place Cunningham among the top 10 in Vols history at eighth.

When sophomore tailback David Oku takes the field, he isn’t being booed. Vols fans are simply elongating his last name as a sign of their support as he zips down the field on one of his stellar kick returns. During his career at Tennessee, Oku has raced to 976 yards on 39 kick returns for a 25.0-yard average. Oku had five returns for 101 yards in the Vols bout with Oregon. With his century-plus performance against the Ducks, Oku lacks just 214 yards from ranking in the all-time top 10 in career yards on total kick returns. The Midwest City, Okla., native already ranks seventh in career kickoff returns with 38, and his 976 career kickoff return yards are also seventh. Oku broke the single-season kickoff returns record in 2009 with his 863 yards on 33 returns.

Vols Starting Fast

Tennessee’s defense has a track record of starting fast out of the gates thus far in 2010. The Vols ‘D’ has forced opponents to punt on their first possessions of both the first and second halves in both games this season.

Tennessee’s defense held Florida to just 115 passing yards in last season’s matchup in Gainesville. The Vols forced two turnovers and recorded three sacks for a loss of 23 yards.

Head Coach Derek Dooley The Dooley Era Begins

Derek Dooley may own a rival’s pedigree, but to Tennessee fans he felt just like one of their own when the Vols introduced him as the school’s 22nd head coach in January. Dooley, 42, comes to UT after three seasons as head coach at Louisiana Tech, where he also served as athletics director since March 2008. He was the only athletics director serving as head football coach on the FBS level. Dooley is the youngest son of Georgia legend Vince Dooley, who coached the Bulldogs for 25 seasons and claimed six league crowns and the 1980 national title. Dooley never accepted the predetermined path to success. He played his college football at Virginia, turning down scholarship offers elsewhere to walk on and later earn his own scholarship from Cavaliers head coach George Welsh. Then after a successful start to the legal profession, Dooley switched gears and returned to his love of football. Four short years later, he latched onto the staff of Nick Saban at LSU and moved into the fast lane of the SEC. After five successful seasons that included the 2003 national title, Dooley moved with Saban to the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. Dooley was named to his first head coaching position by Louisiana Tech in December 2006, and immediately began laying the foundation for future success. Included in his 1720 overall record was an 8-5 mark in 2008 highlighted by the school’s first postseason victory in 30 years at the Independence Bowl. Tech finished second in the WAC that season and played in a bowl game for only the third time since joining the major college ranks in 1989. The Louisiana Sports Writers’ Association named him 2008 Coach of the Year. Dooley is married to Dr. Allison Jeffers Dooley, an OB/GYN and Fort Worth, Texas, native. They

Head Coaching Debuts

Derek Dooley is Tennessee’s 22nd head coach and on Sept. 4 became the 18th to win his first game as Vols skipper. Overall, Tennessee head coaches are 19-4 all-time in their first games. Gen. Robert R. Neyland coached the Vols during three separate tenures and thus had three “first” games. He won all three contests, improving the total number to 21-4.

Coaching Prowess

Head coach Derek Dooley’s staff at Tennessee has a proven track record-eight of his assistants have coaching experience in one of the BCS conferences, five have coached in the NFL and three have experienced the formiddable SEC. Baggett, Chaney, Hiestand, Smith and Wylie spent a combined 24 years coaching in the NFL with eight different teams-- the Baltimore Ravens, Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, Houston Oilers, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets and St. Louis Rams. UT’s assistant coaching staff has a combined 66 years of coaching experience in all six BCS automatic qualifying conferences. The Vols’ assistant coaches have coached in the bowl games that now comprise the BCS a total of 10 times and boast coaching experience in 59 total bowl games-- including the Super Bowl.

Noting the Staff Chaney, Thompson Return

Offensive coordinator Jim Chaney and linebackers coach Lance Thompson prepare for their second year in Knoxville. Both joined Tennessee’s staff in 2009 and were retained by first-year head coach Derek Dooley. Chaney, arrived on The Hill after three seasons in the NFL with the St. Louis Rams. He was most notably the mastermind of a stellar Purdue offense from 19972005, during which time the Boilermakers ranked inside the top 10 nationally in total offense six times. Super Bowl XLIV winning quarterback Drew Brees played for Chaney during his tenure in West Lafeyette, and the pair led Purdue to the Big Ten Championship and a Rose Bowl berth in 2000. Thompson came to Rocky Top via Tuscaloosa, where he served on Nick Saban’s staff from 200708. His coaching resume is overflowing--Thompson has been a member of two national championships staffs, has a pair of SEC titles, two ACC championships and a Conference USA divisonal winner.

Smith Comes Home

Rounding out coach Dooley’s staff was former Tennessee standout Chuck Smith. The Los Angeles native will take over coaching the Vols defensive line. Best known for his work with some of the biggest names in pro football, Smith spent the past season with the New York Jets No. 1 ranked pass defense. Over the past five seasons, Smith has coached and mentored nearly 60 NFL players, including Albert Haynesworth, Robert Ayers and Shaun Ellis-- all three former Vols. He also worked with Michael Johnson, Osi Umenyiora, Derek Morgan and Bart Scott.

During his career in the NFL, Smith recorded 58.5 sacks in nine seasons and served as a captain during the Atlanta Falcons’ lone Super Bowl appearance after the 1998 season. He was later selected the “Best Defensive Lineman in Team History,” by Falcons’ fans. On The Hill, Smith started at right end for two seasons. He helped the Big Orange to a win in the 1990 Sugar Bowl and earned All-SEC honors in 1991.

Wilcox on a Rising Star

According to a recent Sports Illustrated article, Tennessee defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox is one of college football’s best assistant coaches. The article, compiled by Andy Staples and Stewart Mandel, predicts Wilcox’s career is on the rise, citing the 49-4 record Boise State amassed during his four year tenure with the Broncos.

One of the greatest coaches in the history of the game of football, Gen. Robert Reese Neyland is still, and will most likely always be, the yardstick by which all Tennessee football coaches are measured. For 21 years, he led the Big Orange to win after win and championship after championship. His 173 wins, seven conference titles and four national championships set the bar at one of the nation’s finest football institutions. The Best Just Got Better

The Home of the Vols just got a makeover, transforming one of college football’s meccas into an aesthetic masterpiece. The concrete walls that used to hold up the west side of Neyland Stadium were replaced with brick. Below the press box, six new panels display some of the finest to ever don the Orange and White-- Al Wilson, Gen. Robert R. Neyland, Reggie White, Peyton Manning, Johnny Majors and Doug Atkins. Most noticeable from the outside are the approximately 700,000 bricks laid since December that totally transformed the look of the stadium’s north and west sides. Standing in the middle of that transformation is the majestic Gate 21 plaza area. “Gate 21 is the focal point of the stadium,” said David Elliott, assistant athletics director for event management. “It’s our marquee entrance. Gate 21 typically has brought in 30,000 to 35,000 people on a game-bygame basis. It is a stunning, stunning entrance.” Six lofty archways dominate the entrance, which doubles during the work week as a key campus transportation hub. No doubt the traffic on game days is just as hectic. Adjacent to the Gate 21 plaza is another change, the new amphitheater at the corner of Phillip Fulmer Way and Andy Holt Avenue. The Vol Network’s Kickoff Call-In Show takes place there, sporting spiffy new digs after spending years on a make-shift platform in front of a worn down hillside. Just inside Gate 21, the Tennessee Official Team Shop is open for business six days a week under management of the UT Bookstore. Four other souvenir locations are located throughout the stadium, including one in an exclusive new seating area.

Tennessee Terrace

The Tennessee Terrace now occupies the west upper deck, with 1,800 individual chair-back seats and a climate-controlled concourse featuring new restroom and concession areas. All of the stadium’s high-end concessions are available to Tennessee Terrace patrons, and those individuals also have the added bonus of sitting on the home sideline after the Vols switched back to the west for the first time since 1992. Plans call for stadium renovations to take a break over the next two years and resume in December 2012. Unveiling of the Neyland Statue

Perhaps the most anticipated improvement to the Home of the Vols will not be unveiled until the Nov. 13 homecoming date with Mississippi. As Vols young and old return to The Hill to see the Big Orange take on the Rebels, they will see a twice-life-size statue of the stadium’s namesake, Gen. Robert R. Neyland. The statue will meet its permanent resting place between gates 16 and 17.

Sideline Change for 2010 Season

When Tennessee kicked off the 2010 season on Sept. 4 against UT Martin, the Vols did so on a new sideline. The Vols called the west sideline home until 1994, when the SEC began prohibiting student seating directly behind a visiting team bench. In order to meet SEC guidelines, the athletics department approached the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs in December to discuss making modest adjustments to student seating assignments. UT Athletics in conjunction with Student Affairs and SGA chose to add additional lower level student seating in sections J and K to offset the seat adjustments needed in section D to give students a more cohesive student section.

When at Neyland Stadium...

SEC Instant Replay 2010 The Coaches’ Challenge

The head coach may challenge the ruling of any reviewable play. He retains a challenge if his initial challenge is successful and thus results in a reversal by the replay official. The head coach will then have a single challenge that he may use anytime during the game if his team has not used all its timeouts. Thus a team may have a total of two challenges in the game, but only if the first results in a reversal of the on-field ruling.

The Source

All reviewable video comes direct from either the television network broadcasting the game or other TV production facilities that meet established conference standards. The SEC has used instant replay since 2005.

The Plays

 Reviewable 1. Plays governed by Sideline, Goal Line, End Zone, and End Line: a. Scoring Plays, including the ball in possession of a runner breaking the plane of the goal line b. Runner/receiver in or out of bounds c. Recovery of loose ball in and out of bounds 2. Passing Plays: a. Pass ruled complete/ incomplete/ intercepted in the field of play and end zones b. Touching of a forward pass by a player or an official c. Illegal forward pass or illegal handing off beyond the line of scrimmage d. The Process

Each SEC football stadium has a secured replay booth equipped with the HD Instant Replay system provided by XOS Digital. Three individuals work in the booth for the duration of the game: 1. Replay Official, 2. Communicator, 3. Technician. The Replay Official and the Communicator are selected and assigned by the Conference Office. A live HD video feed is sent directly to the replay booth from the TV truck. The Technician watches the feed on an input monitor while recording it into the XOS Digital Replay System. The Technician also marks the beginning of each play while the Communicator marks all incoming replays. Each play and subsequent replay then appears on a touch screen in front of the Replay Technician. As the Technician and the Communicator mark the incoming video, each view will appear as a small picture on the computer touch screen. At any time, the Replay Technician can touch the thumbnail and immediately send that play or replay to the Replay Official. With the Communicator’s assistance, the Replay Official can quickly jump between replays while playing back the video. All replay video navigation is done via a jog shuttle remote controlled by the Replay Official. All video is viewed on an HD monitor that sits in front of the Replay Official. The touch screen is only used to select the replays and to log specific play data in the event a call is overturned. While all plays are reviewed between the whistle and the beginning of the next play, the Replay Official can stop play on the field by using a pager system. Five onfield officials wear pagers. If play is stopped the Referee announces on the stadium PA microphone that play has been stopped so the previous play can be reviewed. The Referee then proceeds to the sideline headset, which provides direct communication to the Replay Official in the booth. Once the play has been reviewed, the Replay Official notifies the Referee, who then announces the decision on the stadium PA system. UTSports.com | 10

Noting Florida  Florida drilled South Florida, 38-14, in Gainesville on Saturday. The Gators nabbed four interceptions and junior running back Jeff Demps had 139 yards rushing. Tied 7-7 at halftime, UF jumped ahead 28-7 in the third quarter with Demps' 62-yard score giving the Gators their first lead. Florida, ranked No. 6/8, is now 2-0 to open the season.  Demps leads Florida with 237 rushing yards through two games. With just 19 carries, his average is an impressive 12.5 per rush -- tops in the nation. Demps productivity and knack for an explosive run come as no surprise as he was the 2010 NCAA champion in the 100m dash, posting a time of 9.96.  Florida leads the country with eight interceptions on defense this season. That mark is double what any other SEC squad has. Senior safety Ahmad Black had two picks versus USF and leads the team and the SEC with three interceptions already this season. He also leads the conference in tackles with 20. Junior cornerback Janoris Jenkins also has two picks this year.  The Gators’ first-year starter behind center, junior John Brantley has tossed for 285 yards, four scores and no picks this season. He was 18 for 31 for 172 yards and two touchdowns against the Bulls. Brantley hasn’t thrown a pick in 117 straight attempts. For his career Brantley has passed for 14 touchdowns against just one interception.  Florida is riding a five game win streak versus Tennessee. UT’s last win came in Knoxville in 2004 when it edged past UF 30-28.  Four of UF’s five offensive line starters made their first career start at that position on opening day. Mike Pouncey started at center after starting 28 games at guard over the past three years. The line has held tight through two games, surrendering just one sack.  Senior guard Carl Johnson was named to the coaches and media preseason All-SEC First Team.  Florida had 15 true freshmen appear in the opening game of the season -- the most in the nation.  Gators’ head coach Urban Meyer has a 98-18 (.845) record as a head coach. In nine full seasons he has failed to lead his team to nine wins only once -- in his first year at Bowling Green where he went 8-3 in 2001. He is 59-10 and has won two national titles (2006, 2008) at Florida.  Junior wide receiver Deonte Thompson leads the Gators in catches (nine) and receiving yards (107) but is still looking for his first TD of the season. He is a second-year starter but missed the 2009 UF vs. UT matchup with an injury.

Vols all-time versus the Florida Gators

1916

The Vols shut out the Gators, 24-0, in their first ever meeting in 1916 in Tampa. UT would go on to win its first 10 matchups with Florida, before finally falling in 1954.

1998

No. 6 Tennessee upset No. 2 Florida, 20-17, in the first overtime game ever at Neyland Stadium. Led by linebacker Al Wilson’s three forced fumbles, the Vols held the Gators to -13 yards on the ground and continued their march to the 1998 national title.

2004

Tennessee’s last win versus Florida came in Neyland Stadium in 2004, as UT edged past the Gators, 30-28, on a 50-yard field goal by James Wilhoit with six seconds left.

 2010 Schedule

Connections  Florida running backs coach Stan Drayton previously held the same position for the Vols in 2008. Drayton was actually the running backs coach at Florida from 2005-07 before leaving the Swamp for Rocky Top for a year. Last season he was the running backs coach at Syracuse before returning to Urban Meyer’s staff this season.  Tennessee wide receivers coach Charlie Baggett and Florida defensive coordinator/ cornerbacks coach Teryl Austin both spent most of the past decade as position coaches in the NFL where they likely schemed against each other. Baggett, who has extensive NFL experience, coached receivers for the St. Louis Rams (2009), Miami Dolphins (2005-06) and Minnesota Vikings (2000-04). Austin was the defensive backs coach for the Arizona Cardinals (2007-09) and the Seattle Seahawks (2003-06).

 Lakeland, Fla. is home to a pair of Vols - junior cornerback Art Evans and freshman defensive lineman John Brown. Brown actually signed with Florida in 2007 out of Lakeland H.S. after helping his prep team win the 2006 and 2007 USA Today national championships. He opted for Northeast Mississippi Community College before enrolling with the Vols, though. Florida’s Ahmad Black, Mike Pouncey, Chris Rainey and Steven Wilks were teammates of Brown. Evans starred at Evangelical Christian H.S. in Lakeland. A total of eight Vols are from Florida.  UT freshman kicker Michael Palardy and Florida rookie defensive back Cody Riggs were star teammates at St. Thomas Aquinas H.S. in Fort Lauderdale where they won state championships in 2007 and 2008.  Tennessee senior defensive lineman Gerald Williams and Florida senior cornerback Moses Jenkins both were All-Broward County selections while at Boyd Anderson High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.  While an assistant at LSU from 2000-04, Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley’s Tiger squads were 2-3 against the Gators. The last time a Dooley-coached team met Florida, the Gators lost 24-21 in 2004.

KNOXVILLE - Tauren Poole had touchdown runs of 24 yards and 14 yards as Tennessee beat UT Martin 50-0 on Saturday night for Derek Dooley’s first victory as the Volunteers’ coach. It was Tennessee’s first shutout since a 48-0 win over Vanderbilt in 2003 and first time facing an FCS opponent since a win over The Citadel in 1983. Tauren Poole had been waiting all year to prove he’d been unfairly stuck behind Bryce Brown and David Oku on the Vols’ depth chart last season. He delivered, darting through holes, running around coverage and picking up 110 yards on 17 carries before sitting out the entire fourth quarter. Oku had his share of carries too and found some large holes for a 44-yard touchdown run with 5:00 left in the first quarter to give the Vols a 10-0 lead in the season opener for both teams. Denarius Moore ran 58 yards for a touchdown and caught a 42-yard scoring pass from Matt Simms. Moore finished with 66 yards on four catches, and Gerald Jones had 86 yards on six catches before injuring his left hand. Tennessee scored nearly every way it could. Austin Johnson tackled D.J. McNeil in the end zone for a safety. Prentiss Waggner intercepted Derek Carr and ran 54 yards for a touchdown. Daniel Lincoln kicked field goals of 21 and 35 yards.

KNOXVILLE - LaMichael James ran for 134 yards, including a 72-yard touchdown, in his first game back after a one-game suspension and No. 7 Oregon scored 45 consecutive points to beat Tennessee 48-13 on Saturday night. James had only 27 yards at halftime after being targeted by the Volunteers’ defense for the entire first half. He started picking up momentum after the break, rushing for 25 yards on five carries in the Oregon’s first second-half drive. He broke several tackles on the 72-yard touchdown run on the first play of the subsequent drive for the Ducks (2-0). Tennessee (1-1) went up 13-3 in the first half after an hour-long delay for lightning but fell apart after James’ long run. A pass by Matt Simms intended for Zach Rogers was cleanly picked off by Cliff Harris, who returned it 76-yards for another score to give Oregon a 27-13 lead with 6:27 left in the third quarter. The Vols got a 48-yard field goal from Daniel Lincoln on their first drive and immediately got the ball back when Barner fumbled the following kickoff after a 39-yard return. Da’Rick Rogers had a 21-yard run that set up a 35-yard field goal by Lincoln with 8:53 left in the first quarter.
