Tennessee and Oregon began their 2010 seasons strong, each posting shutout victories in the first week. The Vols defeated UT Martin 50-0, while the Ducks upended New Mexico 72-0. For the Vols, the shutout of UT Martin marked their first season-opening whitewash in 17 years.

Tennessee Media Policies The following is a list of media policies for the 2010 Tennessee football season. Members of the media are expected to adhere to these policies, as they are put in place to allow student-athletes adequate time to devote to their school work and their team commitments. It should be noted that true freshmen will not be available for interviews. Interviews with Derek Dooley and the assistant coaches should be coordinated through Associate AD Jimmy Stanton. All player interview requests should be made through Associate SID John Painter or Graduate Assistant Andrew Lentz at least 24 hours in advance. The Neyland-Thompson Sports Center is for studentathletes and Tennessee Athletics staff and members of the media should not be in the facility (outside of scheduled practices) unless by appointment through the office of media relations. All post-practice interviews will take place on Haslam Field, or in the case of an indoor practice, insde the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center. A working space for media is available in Stokely Athletics Center adjacent to the media relations office.

In our weekly chat with senior Chris Walker, the defensive end reflects on his memories of where he was when he learned of the tragic events that took place on September 11, 2001.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW ? Bill Baker • WB • 1966-68

Bill Baker, who played wingback at UT from 1966-68 and served as an assistant coach in 1976, is currently a pro scout with the Washington Redskins. From Jasper, Baker is married to Paula Brown, the sister of former UT AllAmerica standout Eddie Brown (1971-73). We caught up with Baker in this week’s “Where are they now?” Q: What are you doing now for a living? A: “Now, I’m working for the Washington Redskins. I’ve been 21 years in the NFL with five different clubs. I started out with the Falcons a long time ago and stayed with them for nine years. I then went to Seattle and stayed there for three years. From there, I went to the Pittsburgh Steelers for three years as the College Scouting Director and then Miami for six years as a national scout. I left last year and went to the Redskins.” Q: Talk about your time at Tennessee and your relationship with Coach Dickey as he built the program in the 60s. A: “I came in as a freshman in 1965, and we had a great four-year run. Of the group recruited that year, I can name a number of guys who ended up playing as seniors and were the foundation of our four-year period there. We won two SEC Championships and ended up winning a national championship in the 1967 season, which was later declared (by Litkenhous Ratings Service). I’ve been very close to Coach Dickey ever since, as all the players were. It was just a close-knit group that year. We had a great group of guys and we’re still very close today. It was a great association, and Coach Dickey was a major part of that along with all of the other coaches.” Q: What was your favorite memory as a Vol? A: “Beating Alabama, because at that time Alabama was our major rival. Of course we started a little run with that win over them. They beat us on a field goal when I was a sophomore. Right at the end of the game, we missed a field goal that they said was wide right, but we would’ve won that one. We went on and won our junior and senior year, and the guys that followed continued (the run). Now it seems like it’s more Florida. At that time, Alabama was our biggest rivalry.”

FRESHMAN FOCUS with Ja’Wuan James OT • Suwanee, Ga. • Marketing Q: What was something you didn’t know about UT until you got here on your visit? JJ: “I didn’t know a lot of the traditions, such as running through the T (and) how big Rocky Top was. That was a big surprise when I was at the game.” Q: While you’re new to the offensive line, so is everyone else. What does that do for your comfort level? JJ: “I’m very comfortable. It’s a new system and everybody was learning. We all learned at the same time and were able to work together. Also, the guys around me are all cool and we’re all one. It’s all about O-Line pride, so I feel very comfortable with it.” Q: How was your transition from high school to college when you enrolled in January? JJ: “I felt like the transition was very much worth it. I was able to grow up and mature fast. The difference was probably the time management, since you have a big schedule. You have practice, workouts, and study hall. I felt like the coaches made it easy so we could fit in and catch up right away.”

CW: “I was in seventh grade. I was getting ready to leave the house to get on the bus. Everything was fine, and then I get to my school and we just see everybody panicking. We got in the classroom and saw what happened. It literally took us five minutes to get from my house to the school on the bus, and all of this happened in literally five minutes. Every time 9/11 comes up, I know exactly where I was, Ms. Williams’ homeroom seventh grade. That’s how crazy it was. At first, I was like ‘What’s going on?’ I didn’t know who it was behind it, what was happening, was it fake? I was just in awe of what happened.”

9/11 in UT Football History  Times Played: Three (vs. Duke 1976/Iowa State 1982/ vs. Georgia 1993)  Record: 2-1  Most Memorable Moment/Game: It wasn’t the longest field goal of Fuad Reveiz’s (1981-84) prolific career, but it was certainly one of the most important. Reveiz booted a 52-yard game-winning field goal to propel Tennessee to a 23-21 victory against Iowa State, its first in 1982. The kick went down in history as Reveiz’s fourthlongest and is tied for the sixth-longest in UT history.  Notable: • Charlie Garner (1992-93) and Cory Fleming (1990-93): Garner rushed for 107 yards and Fleming tallied 105 receiving yards versus Georgia, as they became one of just 42 running back/wide receiver duos to each top 100 yards in the same game in UT history. • Jason Parker (1992-94, 96): Recovered two fumbles against Georgia, a UT record matched by 11 others. • The Vols’ 38-6 win over Georgia tied for their secondlargest margin of victory against the Bulldogs. UT also defeated Georgia by 32 points in 1937, 32-0. Both games were played in Knoxville.

Q: Talk about playing on national television for the first time Saturday night versus Oregon. A: “It’s very exciting. I never thought it would happen this fast but I’m happy about it. I feel comfortable and there aren’t really many nerves. It’s just exciting, and I can’t wait to get out there. After that first play, we have to zone everything else out and focus on our job and what we need to do. I feel like I’ll be fine.”

Twelve true freshman played in the Vols’ opening game against UT Martin, with Ju’Wuan James starting on the offensive line. The 11 other freshmen who saw action include: Tyler Bray, Brent Brewer, Channing Fugate, Zach Fulton, Justin Hunter, Corey Miller, Rajion Neal, John Propst, Da’Rick Rogers, Jacques Smith and James Stone.

For just the ninth time in Tennessee football history and the third time since 1978, the Vols will open up their season with four consecutive games in Knoxville. Tennessee holds a 26-9 (.743) record in those games. In two years (1915 & 1977) the Vols defended their home field for a UT-record five games before hitting the road. Tennessee gave up just three first downs against UT Martin last week, nearly tying the school record of two set more than 50 years ago. Tennessee allowed just two first downs in games against Kentucky in 1946, Vanderbilt in 1946 and Wofford in 1952. UT allowed six first downs against Western Kentucky in the 2009 opener for the last time in single digits. The Vols were good all around against the Skyhawks, giving up 142 total yards and grabbing a pair of interceptions. Prentiss Waggner, who returned an interception 54 yards for a touchdown, also led the Vols with six tackles.

A Pac-10 opponent has been on the Vols’ schedule the last four seasons. Tennessee played California in a home-and-home series in 2006 and 2007 and UCLA in 2008 and 2009. Tennessee is 14-13-3 all-time against current members of the Pac-10. Although the Vols have never faced Oregon, they have played five other current members of the Pac-10: California, Oregon State, UCLA, Southern California and Washington State.

Tennessee vs. Oregon Happy Birthday, Vol Walk

This season, the Tennessee game day tradition of the Vol Walk celebrates its 20th anniversary. Then head coach Johnny Majors started the official Saturday march to Neyland Stadium prior to the Alabama game on Oct. 20, 1990. In 1989, the team walked unofficially to the games from Bill Gibbs Dormitory. That phenomenon caught on with fans. However, the first publicized and announced Vol Walk did not take place until the Alabama game in 1990. The start of the Vol Walk has been moved back this year to the corner of Volunteer Boulevard and Lake Loudoun Boulevard to allow fans in the C-8 parking area to welcome the team. The team members will then gather at Circle Park, where they will pay homage to the Torchbearer and the spirit of service to others that it represents. Following the team’s visit to the Volunteer Statue, the team will proceed down Peyton Manning Pass, and then left onto Phillip Fulmer Way. The Vol Walk begins two hours and 15 minutes before each home Tennessee football game.

Nine Vols with Diplomas Ranks Third

As the 2010 season looms, nine Vols will suit up as graduates of Tennessee. Chad Cunningham, Daniel Lincoln, Cody Pope, Nick Reveiz, Jarrod Shaw, Luke Stocker, Victor Thomas, LaMarcus Thompson and Tyler Wolf all earned their college degrees before the 2010 football season. With nine active graduates slated for action this season, Tennessee is third in the nation behind Boston College (14) and Auburn (11). Kansas State, Virginia Tech and UCF are tied with eight.

Watch Lists

A pair of senior Vols have been placed on national watch lists for major positional awards. Luke Stocker is on the watch list for the John Mackey Award, given annually to the nation’s best tight end. Chris Walker is one of 36 candidates for the Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award. Among many other awards, Eric Berry won the Jim Thorpe Award last season and was a finalist for both the Bronko Nagurski and Lott Trophy awards.

Former UT quarterback Andy Kelly is the Vol Network’s new sideline reporter for this fall. Kelly was a three-year starter for Tennessee from 1988-91 and led the Vols to back-to-back SEC Championships in 1989 and 1990. Behind Kelly, the Vols went 24-5-2 and played in three straight New Year’s Day bowl games. He was named MVP of the 1991 Sugar Bowl and earned second-team All-SEC honors his senior season. He left UT as the career leader in total offense, passing yardage, attempts, completions and touchdowns. Kelly is best known in pro football circles for his illustrious career in the Arena Football League, where became the most prolific quarterback in history over the course of 16 seasons with nine teams. Kelly set several AFL career passing records, including TD passes, yards, attempts and completions. Kelly served as color analyst on regional televised replays of Tennessee football games with the late Bob Bell a number of years ago before his playing career forced him to give it up. Kelly was the top high school quarterback prospect in Tennessee after earning Gatorade All-America honors at Rhea County in Dayton.

Notes on Offense Six New Starters

Six Vols started for the first time on offense in the season opener, four of them on the offensive line. Quarterback Matt Simms, tailback Tauren Poole, center Cody Pope, offensive tackles Dallas Thomas and Ju’Wuan James and offensive guard JerQuari Schofield all made their starting lineup debut. For a new O-line, the Vols were effective in assisting the Vols rushing game against UT Martin. Tennessee rolled up 332 total rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns.

First Since Hardesty

By collecting one rushing and one receiving touchdown, senior wide receiver Denarius Moore became the first Vol since Montario Hardesty to score both a rushing and receiving touchdown in one game. Hardesty pulled off the feat once last season, doing so against Auburn on Oct. 3. Moore finished the season opener with four rerceptions for 66 yards and a touchdown. His touchdown run -- just the fourth rush of his career -- was for 58 yards.

Tailback Trio

2010 opener, Stocker has started all 26 games, while Cooper has started 20 of them. Jones has started 16 games at wide receiver. Cooper enjoyed a breakout season as a receiving option last year, catching 12 passes with an average of 9.2 yards per catch. The Chattanooga native caught his first career touchdown on a two-yard pass against South Carolina last year.

Junior Matt Simms made his debut at quarterback last week, completing 14 of 24 passes for 181 yards and 1 touchdown. No doubt about it: the Simms are a quarterback family. Junior Matt Simms, listed as starter for Saturday’s opener, is the son of Super Bowl champion quarterback Phil Simms and the younger brother of Chris Simms, who played for the Tennessee Titans. Matt Simms arrived at UT in January from El Camino Community College in California, where he passed for 2,204 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Stock(er) Market Rising

Junior Tauren Poole made his first start and led the charge on the ground for UT, scoring a pair of touchdowns and finishing with a career-high 110 yards on 17 carries. Sophomore David Oku, who mainly served as a return specialist as a freshman, set a new career high in rushing with just one run: a 44-yard breakaway touchdown in the first quarter. He ended with 77 yards on just nine carries. True freshman Rajion Neal saw action later in the game, and rushed for 77 yards in his first collegiate game.

Senior tight end Luke Stocker looks to have a breakout season after improving his numbers each season since he began his playing career at UT in 2007 and finishing 2009 with a flurry. In his junior slate, Stocker’s numbers increased by 16 receptions, 250 yards, and five touchdowns. In the Vols’ final two regular season games last season, Stocker registered 10 receptions, 125 yards, and a pair of touchdowns. The individual season records for a tight end are 41 receptions (Chris Brown, 2007), 493 yards (Jason Witten, 2002) and seven touchdowns (Austin Denney, 1966).

Although currently sidelined with a hand injury, senior wideout Gerald Jones is approaching the top 10 in two main receiving categories in the UT record books. With 93 catches under his belt, Jones needs 21 receptions to slide past Lucas Taylor (2005-08) into the top 10 for career receptions. They scored at least 30 points in six of eight home games in 2009, posting a season-high 63 points in the opener against Western Kentucky. The other 30+ point performances at home include Memphis (56), Georgia (45), Ohio (34), South Carolina (31) and Vanderbilt (31). Tennessee has lost only two games at home when scoring at least 30 points: a 35-31 loss to Georgia in 1973 and a 43-30 loss to Florida in 1984. All told, the Vols have only lost seven total games total and tied one other when scoring at least 30 points. The Vols are 324-7-1 (.977) all-time when scoring at least 30 points.

Hunter Also a Track Star

Freshman wide receiver Justin Hunter had a busy summer on the track, a sport in which he’s found national success. In June, he won the long jump at the USA Junior National Championships with a leap of 25 feet, 10.75 inches. Hunter later represented the U.S. at the IAFF World Junior Track & Field Championships, where he finished sixth.

Good to Be Home

The Vols had little problem posting high point totals last season at Neyland Stadium and opened the 2010 season posting 50 points in their shutout win against UT Martin.

Notes on Defense/Special Teams Sharing the Wealth

In the Vols season opening win over UT Martin, Tennessee played 29 different players on defense,-including seven freshmen. Nearly half of those 29 had at least two tackles, paced by sophomore Prentiss Waggner with six. Eight defenders logged tackles for loss, docking the Skyhawks 25 yards behind the line of scrimmage.

Shutouts

Tennessee’s 50-0 win over UT Martin marked the first time the Vols shutout an opponent in 78 games, when they did so against another in-state and SEC foe Vanderbilt, 48-0, on Nov. 22, 2003. The Vols last season-opening shutout was also a 50-0 win, that one over Louisiana Tech in 1993. The Vols have only opened the season with a shutout twice since 1969.

Through the Ground, Through the Air

The Vols defense was stingy in the season opener, limiting UT Martin to just three first downs-- one in the first half and two in the second. Tennessee only gave up 86 yards through the air to the Skyhawks and just 56 on the ground. The Big Orange did not allow a completion until the fifth minute of the second quarter, broke up six passes and intercepted two passes, one of which Prentiss Waggner returned 54 yards for a Tennessee touchdown.

Keeping Up with Johnson

During his career as a Vol, Austin Johnson has seen action in 19 games. However, the contest with UT Martin marked a first for the Hickory, N.C., native, as it was the first time he lined up on the defensive side of the ball. But you wouldn’t have guessed it looking at his stats.

Johnson collected five tackles, including one in the end zone that gave the Vols their first safety since the UCLA game in 2009. He also had an interception that ended a Skyhawks drive in the third quarter and setup a touchdown for the Big Orange.

Freshmen Making a Mark

Seven freshmen played on defense for Tennessee against UT Martin: Eric Gordon (started at RCB), Brent Brewer, Jerod Askew, John Propst, Jacques Smith, Corey Miller and Arthur Jeffery. The seven combined for 10 tackles, including one for loss. Leading the way for freshman was Smith. The Ooltewahnative snagged four solo tackles, including one for a loss of three yards. Propst also recorded four tackles.

First Time the Charm

Four Vols started for the first time against UT Martin, including Malik Jackson, Victor Thomas, Montori Hughes and Eric Gordon. Hughes enjoyed the best day of the group, recording four tackles, including 2.5 for a loss of seven yards. He had the Vols’ lone sack in the opener and also broke up a pass.

Reveiz Back in the Saddle

After his junior season ended earlier than expected due to injury, senior Nick Reveiz made his return to the playing field against UT Martin for the first time since Sept. 26, 2009. The gritty walk-on turned scholarship player has transformed into one of the Vols leaders on and off the field. During the 31 games Reveiz has played thus far in his career on The Hill, he has recorded 61 total tackles. Against the Skyhawks, the Farragut native had one tackle and a quarterback hurry.

Jackson: Filling in Big Shoes

Safety Janzen Jackson has served notice that he is ready to help pick up the void left behind by NFL first-round draft pick Eric Berry. In just 10 games last season, the Lake Charles, La., native racked up 37 tackles, recorded a sack for an 11-yard loss and had a 29-yard interception return. Defending four passes, Jackson also caused and recovered a fumble for an 8-yard return. In the opener against UT Martin, Jackson had three tackles.

Diamond to Gridiron

Defensive back Brent Brewer is not your typical freshman. He signed a professional baseball contract in 2006 with the Milwaukee Brewers out of Sandy Creek High School in Georgia, turning his back on a promising football career at Florida State. The second-round draft pick spent five years as a shortstop in the Brewers’ organization. Now, the former high school wide receiver has found a home at Tennessee as a defensive back, where he currently is slotted at second-string strong safety behind Prentiss Waggner.

Kicking Up a Storm

Senior placekicker Daniel Lincoln earned starting PK duties and will attempt to cement his mark in the Big Orange record books. With two field goals against Martin, the Ocala, Fla., native lacks just nine more to tie John Becksvort for fifth place in on the all-time Vols leaderboard. In his career as a four year starter for Tennessee, Lincoln has scored 242 points on 113 PATs and 43 field goals.

With a team-leading 12 points against the Skyhawks, Lincoln moved up in the all-time scoring ranking at Tennessee. He currently ranks seventh alltime in career scoring, exactly 50 points outside of the top five (Alex Walls at 292). Lincoln’s career long field goal of 49 yards came in last season’s win over South Carolina on Oct. 31.

Punt, Chad! Punt!

Chad Cunningham enters his senior season having secured the starting punter spot. During his career on The Hill, the Dawsonville, Ga., native has 15 punts for 50 yards or more, including a careerbest 58-yarder against Alabama in 2009. His 41.2 yard career average is on pace to place Cunningham among the top 10 in Vols history at eighth.

Okuuuuuuuuuuu!

When sophomore tailback David Oku takes the field, he isn’t being booed. Vols fans are simply elongating his last name as a sign of their support as he zips down the field on one of his stellar kick returns. During his career at Tennessee, Oku has raced to 875 yards on 34 kick returns for a 25.7-yard average. Oku had one return for 12 yards in the Vols opener. Just 25 yards out of the all-time top 10 in career yards on kick returns, the Midwest City, Okla., native ranks third all-time at UT in kick return yardage in a season with 863 return yards recorded during his freshman campaign.

Head Coach Derek Dooley The Dooley Era Begins

Derek Dooley may own a rival’s pedigree, but to Tennessee fans he felt just like one of their own when the Vols introduced him as the school’s 22nd head coach in January. Dooley, 41, comes to UT after three seasons as head coach at Louisiana Tech, where he also served as athletics director since March 2008. He was the only athletics director serving as head football coach on the FBS level. Dooley is the youngest son of Georgia legend Vince Dooley, who coached the Bulldogs for 25 seasons and claimed six league crowns and the 1980 national title. Dooley never accepted the predetermined path to success. He played his college football at Virginia, turning down scholarship offers elsewhere to walk on and later earn his own scholarship from Cavaliers head coach George Welsh. Then after a successful start to the legal profession, Dooley switched gears and returned to his love of football. Four short years later, he latched onto the staff of Nick Saban at LSU and moved into the fast lane of the SEC. After five successful seasons that included the 2003 national title, Dooley moved with Saban to the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. Dooley was named to his first head coaching position by Louisiana Tech in December 2006, and immediately began laying the foundation for future success. Included in his 1720 overall record was an 8-5 mark in 2008 highlighted by the school’s first postseason victory in 30 years at the Independence Bowl. Tech finished second in the WAC that season and played in a bowl game for only the third time since joining the major college ranks in 1989. The Louisiana Sports Writers’ Association named him 2008 Coach of the Year. Dooley is married to Dr. Allison Jeffers Dooley, an OB/GYN and Fort Worth, Texas, native. They

Head Coaching Debuts

Derek Dooley is Tennessee’s 22nd head coach and on Sept. 4 became the 18th to win his first game as Vols skipper. Overall, Tennessee head coaches are 19-4 all-time in their first games. Gen. Robert R. Neyland coached the Vols during three separate tenures and thus had three “first” games. He won all three contests, improving the total number to 21-4.

Coaching Prowess

Head coach Derek Dooley’s staff at Tennessee has a proven track record-eight of his assistants have coaching experience in one of the BCS conferences, five have coached in the NFL and three have experienced the formiddable SEC. Baggett, Chaney, Hiestand, Smith and Wylie spent a combined 24 years coaching in the NFL with eight different teams-- the Baltimore Ravens, Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, Houston Oilers, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets and St. Louis Rams. UT’s assistant coaching staff has a combined 66 years of coaching experience in all six BCS automatic qualifying conferences. The Vols assistant coaches have coached in the bowl games that now comprise the BCS a total of 10 times and boast coaching experience in 59 total bowl games-- including the Super Bowl.

Noting the Staff Chaney, Thompson Return

Offensive coordinator Jim Chaney and linebackers coach Lance Thompson prepare for their second year in Knoxville. Both joined Tennessee’s staff in 2009 and were retained by first-year head coach Derek Dooley. Chaney, arrived on The Hill after three seasons in the NFL with the St. Louis Rams. He was most notably the mastermind of a stellar Purdue offense from 19972005, during which time the Boilermakers ranked inside the top 10 nationally in total offense six times. Super Bowl XLIV winning quarterback Drew Brees played for Chaney during his tenure in West Lafeyette, and the pair led Purdue to the Big Ten Championship and a Rose Bowl berth in 2000. Thompson came to Rocky Top via Tuscaloosa, where he served on Nick Saban’s staff from 200708. His coaching resume is overflowing--Thompson has been a member of two national championships staffs, has a pair of SEC titles, two ACC championships and a Conference USA divisonal winner.

Smith Comes Home

Rounding out coach Dooley’s staff was former Tennessee standout Chuck Smith. The Los Angeles native will take over coaching the Vols defensive line. Best known for his work with some of the biggest names in pro football, Smith spent the past season with the New York Jets No. 1 ranked pass defense. Over the past five seasons, Smith has coached and mentored nearly 60 NFL players, including Albert Haynesworth, Robert Ayers and Shaun Ellis-- all three former Vols. He also worked with Michael Johnson, Osi Umenyiora, Derek Morgan and Bart Scott.

During his career in the NFL, Smith recorded 58.5 sacks in nine seasons and served as a captain during the Atlanta Falcons’ lone Super Bowl appearance after the 1998 season. He was later selected the “Best Defensive Lineman in Team History,” by Falcons’ fans. On The Hill, Smith started at right end for two seasons. He helped the Big Orange to a win in the 1990 Sugar Bowl and earned All-SEC honors in 1991.

Wilcox on a Rising Star

According to a recent Sports Illustrated article, Tennessee defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox is one of college football’s best assistant coaches. The article, compiled by Andy Staples and Stewart Mandel, predicts Wilcox’s career is on the rise, citing the 49-4 record Boise State amassed during his four year tenure with the Broncos. Wilcox, 33, has strong ties to the Vols next opponent-- the Oregon Ducks. Wilcox played safety and cornerback at Oregon from 1995-99.

One of the greatest coaches in the history of the game of football, Gen. Robert Reese Neyland is still, and will most likely always be, the yardstick by which all Tennessee football coaches are measured. For 21 years, he led the Big Orange to win after win and championship after championship. His 173 wins, seven conference titles and four national championships set the bar at one of the nation’s finest football institutions. The Best Just Got Better

The Home of the Vols just got a makeover, transforming one of college football’s meccas into an aesthetic masterpiece. The concrete walls that used to hold up the west side of Neyland Stadium were replaced with brick. Below the press box, six new panels display some of the finest to ever don the Orange and White-- Al Wilson, Gen. Robert R. Neyland, Reggie White, Peyton Manning, Johnny Majors and Doug Atkins. Most noticeable from the outside are the approximately 700,000 bricks laid since December that totally transformed the look of the stadium’s north and west sides. Standing in the middle of that transformation is the majestic Gate 21 plaza area. “Gate 21 is the focal point of the stadium,” said David Elliott, assistant athletics director for event management. “It’s our marquee entrance. Gate 21 typically has brought in 30,000 to 35,000 people on a game-bygame basis. It is a stunning, stunning entrance.” Six lofty archways dominate the entrance, which doubles during the work week as a key campus transportation hub. No doubt the traffic on game days is just as hectic. Adjacent to the Gate 21 plaza is another change, the new amphitheater at the corner of Phillip Fulmer Way and Andy Holt Avenue. The Vol Network’s Kickoff Call-In Show takes place there, sporting spiffy new digs after spending years on a make-shift platform in front of a worn down hillside. Just inside Gate 21, the Tennessee Official Team Shop is open for business six days a week under management of the UT Bookstore. Four other souvenir locations are located throughout the stadium, including one in an exclusive new seating area.

Tennessee Terrace

The Tennessee Terrace now occupies the west upper deck, with 1,800 individual chair-back seats and a climate-controlled concourse featuring new restroom and concession areas. All of the stadium’s high-end concessions are available to Tennessee Terrace patrons, and those individuals also have the added bonus of sitting on the home sideline after the Vols switched back to the west for the first time since 1992. Plans call for stadium renovations to take a break over the next two years and resume in December 2012. Unveiling of the Neyland Statue

Perhaps the most anticipated improvement to the Home of the Vols will not be unveiled until the Nov. 13 homecoming date with Mississippi. As Vols young and old return to The Hill to see the Big Orange take on the Rebels, they will see a twice-life-size statue of the stadium’s namesake, Gen. Robert R. Neyland. The statue will meet its permanent resting place between gates 16 and 17.

Sideline Change for 2010 Season

When Tennessee kicked off the 2010 season on Sept. 4 against UT Martin, the Vols did so on a new sideline. The Vols called the west sideline home until 1994, when the SEC began prohibiting student seating directly behind a visiting team bench. In order to meet SEC guidelines, the athletics department approached the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs in December to discuss making modest adjustments to student seating assignments. UT Athletics in conjunction with Student Affairs and SGA chose to add additional lower level student seating in sections J and K to offset the seat adjustments needed in section D to give students a more cohesive student section.

When at Neyland Stadium...

SEC Instant Replay 2010 The Coaches’ Challenge

The head coach may challenge the ruling of any reviewable play. He retains a challenge if his initial challenge is successful and thus results in a reversal by the replay official. The head coach will then have a single challenge that he may use anytime during the game if his team has not used all its timeouts. Thus a team may have a total of two challenges in the game, but only if the first results in a reversal of the on-field ruling.

The Source

All reviewable video comes direct from either the television network broadcasting the game or other TV production facilities that meet established conference standards. The SEC has used instant replay since 2005.

The Plays

 Reviewable 1. Plays governed by Sideline, Goal Line, End Zone, and End Line: a. Scoring Plays, including the ball in possession of a runner breaking the plane of the goal line b. Runner/receiver in or out of bounds c. Recovery of loose ball in and out of bounds 2. Passing Plays: a. Pass ruled complete/ incomplete/ intercepted in the field of play and end zones b. The Process

Each SEC football stadium has a secured replay booth equipped with the HD Instant Replay system provided by XOS Digital. Three individuals work in the booth for the duration of the game: 1. Replay Official, 2. Communicator, 3. Technician. The Replay Official and the Communicator are selected and assigned by the Conference Office. A live HD video feed is sent directly to the replay booth from the TV truck. The Technician watches the feed on an input monitor while recording it into the XOS Digital Replay System. The Technician also marks the beginning of each play while the Communicator marks all incoming replays. Each play and subsequent replay then appears on a touch screen in front of the Replay Technician. As the Technician and the Communicator mark the incoming video, each view will appear as a small picture on the computer touch screen. At any time, the Replay Technician can touch the thumbnail and immediately send that play or replay to the Replay Official. With the Communicator’s assistance, the Replay Official can quickly jump between replays while playing back the video. All replay video navigation is done via a jog shuttle remote controlled by the Replay Official. All video is viewed on an HD monitor that sits in front of the Replay Official. The touch screen is only used to select the replays and to log specific play data in the event a call is overturned. While all plays are reviewed between the whistle and the beginning of the next play, the Replay Official can stop play on the field by using a pager system. Five onfield officials wear pagers. If play is stopped the Referee announces on the stadium PA microphone that play has been stopped so the previous play can be reviewed. The Referee then proceeds to the sideline headset, which provides direct communication to the Replay Official in the booth. Once the play has been reviewed, the Replay Official notifies the Referee, who then announces the decision on the stadium PA system. UTSports.com | 10

 Led by sophomore running back Kenjon Barber's five touchdowns, Oregon destroyed New Mexico, 72-0, to open the season in Eugene, Ore. The Ducks rolled up a school record 720 yards of offense, set the Oregon record for margin of victory. and didn’t punt the entire game. Barber rushed for 147 yards, four scores and caught a 60-yard TD pass. He wasn't the only Duck with lightning speed, either. Cliff Harris tied an Oregon season record by returning two punts for touchdowns against the overmatched Lobos.  Saturday will be the 2010 debut of sophomore running back LaMichael James, who served a onegame suspension against New Mexico. James has a streak of seven consecutive regular season games rushing for 100 yards he will try to keep alive against the Vols. This will also be sophomore kicker Rob Beard’s season debut, as he also sat out the season-opener because of a suspension.  Opening holes for Barber and James will be a very experienced offensive line, as all five up front are returning starters. Included in this group is fifth-year seniors Jordan Holmes, Bo Thran, C.E. Kaiser, junior Mark Asper and redshirt sophomore Carson York. Thran is the most experienced of the crew with two years of starting experience already under his belt.  Senior wide receiver Jeff Maehl already has a team-best 29 starts under his belt. Last season, Maehl cemented himself as the Ducks’ top receiving threat, leading the team with 53 catches, 696 yards and six touchdowns. Against the Lobos he led Oregon with five catches for 91 yards.  The Ducks return nine of 11 starters on offense. Quarterback Darron Thomas is the only Duck who will be on the field for the opening offensive snaps who didn’t start at least five games. Oregon returns seven starters on defense. Thomas tossed for 220 yards, two scores and an interception versus New Mexico. As true freshman in 2008, he passed for 210 yards and three scores in the final 15 minutes of a narrow loss to Boise State.  Senior defensive end Kenny Rowe led the Pac-10 with 11.5 sacks in 2009. The 6-3, 232-pound pass rusher also recorded 15 TFLs and was named defensive MVP of the Rose Bowl after nabbing three sacks.  Senior linebackers Spencer Paysinger and Casey Matthews each made 81 tackles a year ago and are two-year starters.  Sophomore free safety John Boyett had a remarkable frosh campaign, leading Oregon in tackles (90) and earning Freshman All-America honors. He made four stops versus New Mexico.  The Ducks, who are ranked No. 11, are the defending outright Pac-10 champions, and edged USC as the favorites to repeat in the preseason media poll.

Tennessee rebounded from a 20-16 season-opening loss to UCLA in Los Angeles to run the table throughout the rest of the regular season to win the SEC Championship and claim the Litkenhous National Championship.

The Vols clobbered the Ducks’ in-state rival, Oregon State, 41-10 in Knoxville in Johnny Majors first year at the helm of UT. A year later, Tennessee tied the Beavers, 13-13, in Neyland Stadium.

2006

In the Big Orange’s last win over a Pac-10 foe, No. 9 California came to Knoxville for the season-opener and was steamrolled in a 35-18 upset by the 23rd-ranked Vols.

Connections  Tennessee first-year defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox was a defensive back for the Ducks from 1995-99. Wilcox played in three bowl games for Oregon and was an All-Pac-10 Second Team cornerback in 1999. Wilcox is the son of Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Dave Wilcox, who starred at Oregon from 1962-63. Wilcox is from Junction City, Ore., and was born in Eugene.  As defensive coordinator for Boise State from 2006-09, Wilcox went 2-0 against Oregon. In 2009, Wilcox’ defense held the high-powered Ducks’ offense to season-lows in points (9), first downs (6), rushing yards (31), total yards (152) and third down conversion ratio (1 of 10) en route to a 18-9 seasonopening win. Oregon averaged 36.1 ppg and 412 total yards per contest in 2009. Boise State upset Oregon 37-32 in 2008.  While playing at Oregon, Wilcox spent his career as a Duck alongside Vols defensive intern Peter Sirmon. An All-Pac 10 linebacker, Sirmon was a four-year starter from 1996-99. He was drafted in the fourth round of the 2000 NFL draft and played seven seasons for the Tennessee Titans.  Oregon is 3-4 against the SEC dating back to a 1929 loss to Florida. Most recently, the Ducks faced Mississippi State in 2003, a 42-34 win in Starkville. The Vols will be the fifth SEC team to play Oregon -- Georgia and LSU being the other two. The Ducks are 0-3 against the Eastern Division and 2-4 when playing SEC teams outside Eugene.  Oregon secondary coach John Neal, in his eighth season with the Ducks, cut his coaching teeth in the Vols backyard as defensive coordinator at East Tennessee State in 1986. He also spent considerable time with two of the Vols other 2010 opponents-- UAB and Ole Miss. Neal served the Rebels from 1992-94 as secondary coach and was with the Blazers in the same position from 1995-2002.  Oregon redshirt freshman offensive lineman Karrington Armstrong and UT junior center Darin Gooch led their prep alma mater, Reno McQueen H.S. to 14-0 record and the Nevada state championship.  Tennessee junior tight end Mychal Rivera originally signed with Oregon in 2008 before opting for College of Canyons junior college. KNOXVILLE - Tauren Poole had touchdown runs of 24 yards and 14 yards as Tennessee beat UT Martin 50-0 on Saturday night for Derek Dooley’s first victory as the Volunteers’ coach. It was Tennessee’s first shutout since a 48-0 win over Vanderbilt in 2003 and first time facing an FCS opponent since a win over The Citadel in 1983. Tauren Poole had been waiting all year to prove he’d been unfairly stuck behind Bryce Brown and David Oku on the Vols’ depth chart last season. He delivered, darting through holes, running around coverage and picking up 110 yards on 17 carries before sitting out the entire fourth quarter. Oku had his share of carries too and found some large holes for a 44-yard touchdown run with 5:00 left in the first quarter to give the Vols a 10-0 lead in the season opener for both teams. Denarius Moore ran 58 yards for a touchdown and caught a 42-yard scoring pass from Matt Simms. Moore finished with 66 yards on four catches, and Gerald Jones had 86 yards on six catches before injuring his left hand. Tennessee scored nearly every way it could. Austin Johnson tackled D.J. McNeil in the end zone for a safety. Prentiss Waggner intercepted Derek Carr and ran 54 yards for a touchdown. Daniel Lincoln kicked field goals of 21 and 35 yards.
