a community’s perseverance to support the local movement
Throughout another unusual year, this community has shown us what it’s really made of – and we couldn’t be more proud to be a part of it. An attitude of perseverance and simply ‘helping your neighbor’ has taken hold among our shoppers, staff, makers, and beyond. And you – our customer – plays a huge role in that at The Local Store. Choosing to shop local extends community support beyond what many may initially think of. It’s the staff and their families, it’s the makers that create our goods, it’s the local print shops and service providers we work with – we’re all grateful. The continued local movement is real. And it’s all thanks to you. As we all prepare to gather with our friends and family, perhaps more safely and stress-free than we have in a while, we feel an immense sense of gratitude to be part of your family’s traditions. We take pride in being the gateway between maker and community, and hope to share in that experience for many years to come. Happy Holidays! – Lindsey Quinnies, Store Manager

Happy Medium
Addy Serum and Zach Pecha met in their junior year at North High School in Eau Claire, and immediately found their common love – for each other, yes, but also for taking care of the planet.
“The main goal is to get more people thinking about sustainability. We’re using coffee as the vehicle to drive sustainability.” -ZACH PECHA, CO-OWNER
Hikers Brew Coffee is one of few companies in the Chippewa Valley that is part of the 1% For the Planet organization, as they donate 1% of their total revenue to environmental nonprofits. The coffee company is also climate-neutral certified, as they offset their total carbon produced by putting money toward planting trees or other green initiatives. For every online order, they donate a portion of their proceeds to plant a tree. The six main flavors they offer include Mile Marker (a smooth, well-balanced medium roast), Van Life (a vanilla, Columbianblend, medium roast), Red Rocks (a caramel, Columbian-blend, medium roast), Yurt Dirt (a robust Guatemalan-blend, dark roast), Some Mores ( a chocolatey, roasted marshmallow Columbianblend medium roast), and Hazy Hiker (a chocolatey hazelnut Columbian-blend medium roast).
PRODUCTS AVAILABLE HERE
ADVENTURE WITH THE VENTURE PACKS The shelf life of their coffee is about 6-8 months as a result of the sustainable packaging, so they roast their coffee by the order so everything is as fresh as possible.

Scents of the season
When you hear the phrase “Monkey Farts,” you probably don’t think of natural, homemade goat-milk soap from a family-owned and operated farm in the Chippewa Valley. But that’s one of a vast number of unique scents that Julie Maro creates at Lucy’s Soaps using milk from her Alpine Dairy goats, Sadie Mae and Misty.
“Scent has such a deep impact on people, and I hope my soaps do that for other people – create good memories with family and friends.” -JULIE MARO, OWNER OF LUCY’S SOAPS
Maro’s soaps, inspired by her great-grandma Lucy, are made with all-natural ingredients and contain no GMOs or preservatives – ensuring the best moisture for your skin during the dryest season of the year. This French-milled soap takes weeks – if not months – to make, and has taken Maro years to perfect. She has no shortage of scents using fragrance oils or essential oils: Cranberry, Honey Oatmeal, Dragon’s Blood, Dirt, Lavender, Lemongrass, Lilac, Vanilla, and – yes – Monkey Farts. During the holidays, she cooks up some seasonal soap scents, including Sleigh Ride – a combination of clove, peppermint, and cinnamon – Pumpkin Spice, Peppermint, and other festive offerings, using molds that look like Santa Claus, candles, candy canes, jingle bells, stars, and more.

Making memories Do you remember the smell of your mom’s homemade chocolate chip cookies? Scent brings about lots of emotions. For Maro, the smell of her lilac soap reminds her of her greatgrandma Lucy’s lilac bushes.

Colorful Creations
There’s something mesmerizing about the clay creations of longtime Eau Claire artist Eric Holey of Dancing Cat Arts pottery. His most popular bowl seamlessly blends natural navy, green, and tan hues, creating a vibrant version of the northern lights that dance across the sky each winter, if you’re lucky enough to see them. And that vibrancy and passion has been at the center of Holey’s work at his pottery studio for over a decade.
“when I’m centering clay on the wheel, I feel like I’m centering my life.” -ERIC HOLEY, OWNER
What draws people to Dancing Cat Arts pottery are the high-quality commercial glazes in medium-to-dark, natural colors, and dashes in his creativity by blending colors in unique ways. All of his glazes are hand brushed in a swirling pattern, which creates the unique appearance of movement that is signature of his work. “It brought out creativity I didn’t know I had,” he said. Holey has always been drawn to bowls, he said, even in his younger years. “That form is so graceful,” he said. “The outside edges, to me, are the most important part of the bowl. You have to know how to do it well to create strong walls so they don’t collapse, and I’ve learned some techniques to do that. And I love making bowls. They really speak to me. My wife says, ‘It all started with a bowl.’ 1”

Purr-ific pottery “I thought, for a cat to dance, it would have to be really happy,” said owner Eric Holey. “Doing pottery makes me really happy.” That inspired the name “Dancing Cat Arts.”
