N O R T H WO O DS B E AU T Y M E E T S S M A L L- C I T Y C H A R M It’s easy enough to call Menomonie a “college town,” and while that’s a fair description, it barely scratches the surface of one of western Wisconsin’s most beautiful communities. Nestled around gorgeous Lake Menomin, the town generates a storybook vibe, with enough hills and urban trees to make exploring the place a mini adventure. But don’t let Menomonie's small town looks fool you. It’s home to some of the region’s most interesting shops, businesses, and eateries, showing us how the people of Menomonie don’t shy away from new ideas and concepts. And speaking of that college, UW-Stout adds a powerful dose of forward thinking as well, offering some of the state’s most exciting degrees in fields such as industrial design, fashion, environmental science, and game design. That’s on top of the thousands of young people it draws into the city each year. Finally, proving Menomonie is a Wisconsin town through and through, it rests alongside some of the region’s very best trails, waterways, forests, and parks, giving its residents easy access to all kinds of outdoor fun. Oh, and lest we forget, this town also features one for the Midwest’s most celebrated historic theaters. In short, check out Menomonie. You’ll be happy with what you find.

donut at a time,” Donut Sam’s co-owner Michael Husby said. Menomonie donut shop Donut Sam’s (521 Second St. East) opened its doors one year ago, and those 365 days were anything but typical for a new business. Owners Michael and Tanya Husby opened the inhouse donut brand – which features unique donuts like their s’mores donuts, chocolate chip cookie dough donuts, and Cinnamon Toast Crunch donuts – after being inspired by their 13-year-old son Sam, who has Down syndrome. Michael Husby said they had a strong business plan prior to opening, but everything changed drastically once the pandemic hit. “Not having any seating for the first five months was a huge change,” Husby said. “We’d thought we’d be more of a community

place, but we became more of a place for takeout and somewhere you order ahead of time. We also never would’ve thought to put our merchandise in gas stations, because that was in the five-year plan, not the five-day plan.” With the Menomonie community’s support, Donut Sam’s has been able to follow through on their goal of employing individuals with special needs. The bakery currently employs a part-time decorator with special needs and is in the process of collaborating with the Menomonie Area School District on employing interns in a variety of areas. The business’s dedication to delicious donuts and inclusive employment led to them winning the Best New Business award from Wisconsin Main Street this spring. For more tasty information on Donut Sam’s you can visit them online at donutsams.com.
SAM THE MAN Warning: Consuming donuts will cause spontaneous joy and happiness.

ooking for a new adventure? Townies and tourists alike should check out these six natural beauties that capture Menomonie’s beauty and history.
Red Cedar River Menomonie is home to the beautiful Red Cedar River – a freshwater playground for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and river tubing. Its shallow waters offer a peaceful float, with a 15-mile stretch running along the Red Cedar State Trail. The river is known to avid fishers for its large walleye population, and visitors can often spot bald eagles flying over the river to perch in the white pines along the banks.
Red Cedar State Trail This 14.5-mile trail runs along the bottom of the steep walls of the Red Cedar Valley from Menomonie to its connection with the Chippewa River State Trail. This scenic hike takes outdoor explorers through the Dunnville State Wildlife Area and along the Chippewa River. In winter, it’s regularly groomed for cross-country skiing.
Hoffman Hills Home to more than 700 acres of preserved and restored wooded hills, wetlands, and prairie, Hoffman Hills has nearly 9 miles of hiking trails. In the summer, native
prairie hums with wildlife, and, in the winter, its cross-country ski trails wind through snow-covered forest. Crowing the highest point in the park is a 60-foot observation tower that offers gorgeous, colorful views for miles.
Devil's Punchbowl Looking for a short yet challenging hike with a big reward? Take the steep trail down into Devil’s Punchbowl. Formed by postglacial flooding, this natural rock amphitheater is the backdrop for a stunning waterfall. Located near the west bank of the Red Cedar River, this scenic location is perfect for bird-watchers, photographers, couples, and geologic students alike. The sides of the exposed rock face flourish with plant life in the spring and summer and are covered by a curtain of ice in the winter.
Menomin Park Nestled along the east bank of Lake Menomin is 147 acres of largely undeveloped land. Menomin Park’s ponds and prairie grasses are just a couple of the natural features that give the land its unique character. The park has walking and hiking trails and more than 5 miles of mountain-biking trails.

uds up! One unique part of
Menomonie life and culture is the city’s three (!) independent breweries. One began out of respect for area manufacturing, another was inspired by adventures through Europe, and the third grew out of a desire to make a local hotspot for people to gather. And what do these three unique joints have in common? They decided to call Menomonie home.
Zymurgy Brewing 6 2 4 M A I N S T. E , M E N O M O N I E ( 7 1 5 ) 5 7 8 - 9 0 2 6 • Z Y M U R GY B R E W. C O M Zymurgy prides itself on sourcing everything locally – whether it’s artists they host for their music and comedy nights, or ingredients from local farmers used to brew their beers. They also support the local community through fundraising and charity efforts. Zymurgy built themselves in a 100-year-old service station – formerly known as Dennis’ Standard – after owner Jonathan Christiansen traversed Europe, falling in love with their brewing styles. The pride and joy of Zymurgy Brewing is its hefeweizens – particularly the Fluffhead Honey and Ramblin’ Rose Cranberry. For those not in the mood for – or able to have – a brew, Zymurgy also offers a craft ginger ale. They are also pup-friendly, making treats out of the spent grain.
Brewery Nønic 6 2 1 F O U R T H S T. W, M E N O M O N I E (715)578-9078 • BREWERYNONIC.COM Brewery Nønic was created in an old railroad depot that owner Ryan Verdon remembered as an eyesore of the area. He wanted to create a place that was community-driven, and a brewery was a natural fit. Brewery Nønic’s main goal is to engage many different kinds of people through thrilling events. Their signature brew is their Strangeways British Bitter, which is served on cask rather than tap. This dates back to the beginnings of brewing, when casks were stored at room temperature and beer was naturally carbonated. This gives the beer a creamy and smooth finish. Brewery Nønic has a few collaborations going on: One is with Zymurgy, which created Zeitgeist, a German-style pilsner. The other is with Lucette Brewing Company and the Landmark Conservancy, offering a hazy IPA called Devil’s Punchbowl as part of a fundraising effort to bring awareness to conservation efforts for the Punchbowl, a local geologic wonder.

then decided to settle down and sell pints in Menomonie due to the history of craftsmanship and manufacturing in the town’s logging history. The full-service restaurant and brewery offers woodfire pizzas and an array of drafts, including their signature Farmer’s Daughter Blond Ale, the Shining Dawn Belgian Golden Ale, and the Slow Hand Robust American Stout. They are also proud of their collaboration on the Devil’s Punchbowl Hazy IPA.

I
f you’re checking out
Menomonie with the help of this guide, you may notice a number of buildings, institutions, streets, and even bodies of water named after people. So who were these Menom-o-namesakes? Read on to meet a few of them:
James Huff Stout The educational institution that evolved into what is now known as UW-Stout was endowed by lumberman and politician J A M E S H U F F S T O U T . His father, Henry Stout, was one of the founders of Knapp, Stout & Co., which dominated the region’s lumber industry in the latter part of the 19th century. James took over management of the company in 1889, and a few years later was elected to the state Senate. Starting in 1891, he funded the Stout Manual Training Schools, which provided manual and domestic education, and even trained kindergarten teachers. This became the Stout Institute, which passed into state hands after James died in 1910 and eventually became UW-Stout.
Mabel Tainter Generosity born out of grief is the reason people known the name of M A B E L T A I N T E R nearly 135 years after her death at the age of 19. Mabel, the daughter of lumber baron Andrew Tainter and his wife, Bertha, died in 1886. The couple spent $125,000 to fund the construction of the grand Romanesque building in downtown Menomonie that bears her name. It was completed in 1889, and in addition to housing an elaborate theater – complete with balconies and a massive pipe organ – the Mabel Tainter was home to a library and the Unitarian Society. Today it’s a beloved (and still active) landmark.
John Holly Knapp While not as well-known today as Stout, the Knapp name has also survived in the Menomonie area for more than a century. J O H N H O L L Y K N A P P was just 21 when he bought an interest in a sawmill on the Red Cedar River in 1846. His partnership with William Wilson evolved into Knapp, Stout & Co., which by the end of the 19th century essentially controlled the entire Red Cedar basin – in the words of one history book, “the river flowage, the timber, the land, and to a degree the people of the valley.” Knapp, who died in 1888, gave his name to Menomonie’s Knapp Street as well as the nearby village of Knapp.
MABEL TAINTER + HER NAMESAKE BUILDING
William Wilson A steamboat captain from Iowa, W I L L I A M W I L S O N came north and decided to try his hand in the lumber business in partnership with Knapp (though Wilson’s name was never on the business because he was heavily in debt and apparently didn’t want his creditors to come after the lumber company). He came to Menomonie in 1846 and was the city’s first mayor. In 1859, he built what is now the Wilson Place Museum, originally was a Colonialstyle mansion on a 22-acre estate. When he died in 1892, his daughter, Angelina, and her husband (none other than James Huff Stout) inherited the home, which they expanded and remodeled in the Queen Anne style. By the 1920s, one of William Wilson’s grandsons, George Wilson LaPointe Jr., owned the home and transformed it once again – this time into a Mediterranean villa (while also reducing its size by two-thirds). Today, the Wilson Place Mansion is a museum, and the Dunn County Historical Society offers tours.
