IT’S TIME TO SHOP LOCAL. FOR REAL. the role of community support in an ever-changing environment
For small local shops like The Local Store and countless others across the Chippewa Valley, 2020 has clearly been a very challenging year. It has put every aspect of our store’s existence, and just about everything else we hold dear, to the test. We’ve gone through total shutdown, open with restrictions, and seemingly every adjustment in between to keep the doors open while keeping our staff and the community safe. The challenges we’ve faced, and continue to face, have only emphasized the importance of our whole mission here at The Local Store – to support the people and places around us. The continued loyalty we’ve felt from this community has been overwhelming at times. The sustained purchases and online orders, messages of encouragement, and overall inspiration hold enormous significance – not only financially but sentimentally as well. It all gives us the morale boost to keep fighting. Choosing to shop with us extends community support beyond what you probably initially think of – it’s the staff and their families, it’s the makers that create our goods, it’s the local print shops that we work with, and more – and we’re all grateful. Now with the holiday season upon us, our goal is simple: make this holiday season as safe and fun and stress-free as possible while also supporting the local makers that make our community so special. Whether it’s safe, in-person shopping, shopping online for curbside pickup, or direct shipping to friends and family, we want to give you an incredible experience shopping local. See you soon! – Lindsey Quinnies, Store Manager

MEET THE MAKERS
tools of the trade
Nick Endle comes from a family of creators. As the son and grandson of carpenters and woodworkers – and with a mother with a penchant for crafting – it was just a matter of time until Endle fell in love with the family trade.
“I always had an interest in taking things apart and putting them back together.” - N I C K E N D L E , OW N E R
“Most of all, I enjoy making small, functional items.” Six years ago, Endle created his first wooden bench with the help of his dad, and he hasn’t looked back since. After inheriting his grandfather’s vast collection of tools and a few tips and tricks, he now sells handmade cribbage boards, ladles, cutting boards, bottle openers, and intricate ornaments as a part of his side business, Endle Home Goods. Over the years, he’s gotten more efficient with his trade, so he can make a quality cribbage board in under two hours. He works mostly with cherry, maple, and walnut woods because “it works well no matter what you’ve got going on in your house,” Endle said. For Endle, woodworking is more about artistic expression and creativity than anything else. “It was kind of a perfect fit when I first started woodworking,” he said. He turns the support from his family, friends, and his colleagues at Big Cartel – where he works full time – back into his local community. “It’s all about supporting your community,” the Eau Claire-based artist said. “It’s a great place to be.”

WOOL OF THE WORLD
In the beginning, there were sheep. At least that’s the case for Melissa Todd, the local lady behind Wool N’ Feather Farm in Colfax. When Todd and her husband moved from Vermont to Wisconsin, someone gifted them two adorable, fluffy sheep as a housewarming gift.
“The sheep started everything.” - M E L I S S A T O D D, OW N E R
“We didn’t want sheep, we weren’t thinking about sheep… and then it started from there because we fell in love with the sheep.” Using excess wool from their 32 sheep, Todd now weaves intricate handbags and wristlets, creates dryer balls (a sustainable alternative to dryer sheets), and sells various soft yarns and felt soaps, all of which are available at The Local Store as well as her online Etsy shop. “That’s my favorite part,” she said, “raising the sheep and using their different fleeces every year to make the products.” The unique thing about Todd’s Shetland Sheep is that they come in an array of colors: black, brown, spotted, cream, and gray – so the fibers she uses in her items are the natural color of the sheep, which changes from year to year. The healthier the sheep, the better the wool fibers are, so you know Todd’s handmade items are of a superb quality because she keeps each sheep healthy as a … well, horse? “Everything is so unique, and everything has a story,” she said. “Our sheep, they’re raised here on the farm, I do all the weaving on the farm, like everything is just right here and handmade by me and by my mom.”

MEET THE MAKERS
best in glass
Every day is an opportunity to learn something new for Jon Chapman and Dawn Passineau, who are artists by trade – which you could probably guess by the creativity they bring to the art of glass blowing at their orchard, The Glass Orchard. “We make objects,” Chapman said.
“I think objects tend to hold more than just those physical spaces. I think they inherently tell some sort of story.” - J O N C H A P M A N , OW N E R
When they refill their furnace, they melt a special raw sand at 2,400 degrees until it becomes clear glass. Then the real fun begins, they say. This holiday season, you can pick up some of their handcrafted ornaments and vases at The Local Store, which showcase only a small fraction of their skills. Glass is a wild material, Chapman said. “It does take an intimate relationship with it to understand how it wants to be worked,” he said. “You’re constantly responding to its time and its heat.” Each item takes around 20 minutes to make – well, that and the number of years they have been blowing glass (which is quite a few). “Things have only been getting more efficient and succinct as we put time in and work at mastering the craft,” Chapman said. The duo also tend to their apple orchard and make delectable apple cider every year. At the root of it, they are creators. They enjoy teaching glass-blowing classes at The Glass Orchard to share their love of the craft.
