DANCING UP A STORM Z.VIDA Zumba Master Class

Dance like nobody’s watching. This statement is cutesy, trite, and meant to be a metaphor. But darn it, I’m taking it literally, and that’s why I’ve spent almost every Saturday morning for the last two months at Zumba class. (Zumba, in case you’re wondering, is “a Latin-inspired dance-fitness class” according to the Zumba Fitness Instructor Training Manual.) Am I a good dancer? No. Do I feel like a fool? Yes. Do I regret joining the class? Absolutely not. Dancing is so far outside my comfort zone that attempting it has opened a whole new world to me. I can, for the first time in my life, say things like, “Guess what?! I shimmied today!” with pure joy and no irony whatsoever. My inhibitions were not always so lacking, though. I’d heard of Zumba before, and vaguely thought that I should try it out, but I always ended up putting it off for another time. That time finally arrived when my friend Cindy Peterson, along with her friend and coworker, Monika Waloway, founded Z.Vida Fitness in Eau Claire. I wanted to get in shape; I wanted to try something new; I had complete faith in Cindy’s kindness. So I went. I arrived at the first class a bit nervous, not knowing what to expect, fearing that I’d be singled out and exposed for the dancing incompetent that I am. I shouldn’t have fretted, though—as soon as I came in, I was dancing away with the others. Cindy and Monika led the class through the moves on each song, and I was so involved in keeping up that I didn’t have time to feel self-conscious. By the end of class, I was red as a beet but full of enthusiasm. I’d been doing yoga for years in the privacy of my own home, but this was the first workout that made me attain a healthy level of heart-pounding sweatiness. I thus became a Zumba devotee. Clearly, I am not alone in my enthusiasm. Since its invention by Beto Perez in the ‘90s, more than a million people have taken classes taught by more than 10,000 trained instructors. Cindy and Monika never expected they would someday join the ranks of those instructors, but their destinies changed when rumors began to circulate about the closing of their favorite studio. They thought about living a Zumba-free life and decided such an empty existence was simply not acceptable. Encouraged by their friends and family,

Rebecca White Body

took a chance and tried Zumba – a dance aerobic class – for the first time and writes here about her experience as a Zumba newbie.

they took the plunge and went through training to become licensed Zumba instructors. Monika was the first to be trained and actually began teaching at their favorite studio before it closed. She was also hired at two local gyms. Cindy quickly followed suit and arranged to offer classes at her local church. She also began searching for a studio where she and Monika could get together and offer Zumba as a team. Divine intervention led them to a space at the Danz Kraze Studio in Banbury Place, and with training covered, a location secured, and experience and motivation fueling them, Cindy and Monika formed Z.Vida Fitness. The pair focused primarily on getting the word out through online event calendars, social media, and self-created business cards and posters. Word of mouth has also been a powerful ally because, as Cindy points out, “Zumba honestly sells itself!” Neither woman is getting rich off teaching Zumba, but both agree that their efforts are worthwhile. They cite their students’ smiling faces as one of the biggest rewards, but, Monika adds, it doesn’t hurt that they “get paid to work out!” Z.Vida Fitness welcomes anyone who’s interested in trying out a class. Cindy advises first-timers to wear comfortable clothes with flat-soled shoes and to arrive secure in the knowledge that all moves can be modified to accommodate their experience and fitness levels. Monika also emphasizes that students who aren’t born dancers shouldn’t get frustrated if they don’t perform a move perfectly right away. “The more you practice, the better you become, and the more fun you’ll have!” She’s not kidding about that. I won’t be going pro in, oh, the next thousand years or so, but I’ve made progress. Every time I end a song with my feet in the right place, I experience a little thrill of accomplishment. I’m also losing weight and getting stronger. When I think about going to my first class, Monika’s words about hers capture my feelings exactly: “I’m so glad I did!”

If you have ever been on a diet, you know that the effects simply don’t last once you resume your normal eating habits. In order to receive lasting benefits, you really need to change your entire lifestyle and relationship with food. So, to help you out, we have compiled a list of these different “lifestyle diets” to help you think about the kinds of extremes some people take.

VEGETARIANISM While you may think a vegetarian diet is self-explanatory, there are many varieties to choose from, each with their own set of rules.

Total Vegetarians: The diet consists entirely of food from plant sources.

Lacto-Vegetarians: While this diet is still based in the consumption of plant products, dairy products are also allowed. Lacto-Ovo Vegetarians: This type of vegetarian diet allows both dairy and egg products in addition to the primary plant food.

Pollo-Vegetarians: With this type of diet, poultry products are allowed. Only beef products are eliminated. Pesco-Vegetarians: The only type of meat allowed here is seafood.

Semi-Vegetarian/Flexitarian: While this diet consists of mostly plant sources, meat, eggs, and dairy products are allowed on occasion.

Veganism Veganism is by far the strictest of the lifestyle diets. A vegan diet consists entirely of food from plant sources. Animal products, including those from dairy, eggs, or honey are not allowed. Vegetarian and Vegan diets have proven to provide many positive health benefits such as decreased risk of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. However, vegetarians and vegans need to follow a strict dietary code to ensure adequate nutrition. Neglecting to obtain certain nutrients from plant sources can lead to long-term health problems. The benefits can far outweigh the costs if, of course, you take the diet seriously. An Eau Claire native and vegetarian, who wishes to remain anonymous, has experienced positive health outcomes from the dietary shift, as a diabetic. “Since I decided to quit eating meat and adopt a plant-based diet, I have had noticeably better control over my blood-sugar levels. Switching to vegetarianism is probably the best thing I’ve ever done.” Eau Clairian Susan Feather also sees vegetarianism in a positive light. “With all the health benefits, switching to a vegetarian diet just made sense,” said Feather. “I’m very happy with my decision.” Vegetarian and vegan diets are becoming increasingly more prevalent. More restaurants are beginning to offer vegetarian friendly dishes, and more people are beginning to accept the decision to switch over to this lifestyle.

The Raw Deal in Menomonie specializes in raw food

RAW FOODS The raw foods diet is becoming increasingly more common among lifestyle diets. All meals consist of safe, uncooked food such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains. The diet itself is fairly self-explanatory and has many health benefits. “In short, the idea behind vegan raw foods is the food is not heated above 105 degrees, leaving the enzymes alive, which results in your body being able to absorb all the nutrients,” said Ashley Score of Raw Deal, a raw foods restaurant in Menomonie. “The more vegan raw foods in your diet, the better, but you certainly do not have to be exclusively raw to benefit your health and energy. After all, you are what you eat!”

YOGA:MORETHAN YOU IMAGINE It’s not only for gurus and models: Yoga can benefit everyone, veteran teachers say. By Tom Giffey

There was a time in the not-too-distant past when yoga wasn’t as close as the supermarket check-out, when it wasn’t viewed as the province of welltoned magazine models. Having made the leap from millennia-old Indian spiritual discipline to the New Age and hippie movements in the United States a few decades ago, yoga still took a while to reach the Upper Midwest. Sandra Helpsmeet remembers developing an interest in yoga years ago while living in a small Minnesota town. In those pre-Internet days, she hunted for books, finally stumbling across Richard Hittleman’s Yoga: 28 Day Exercise Plan and becoming a solo yoga practitioner. “Even though I didn’t know what I was doing,” she recalls, “I liked how it felt.” Some years later, Helpsmeet found herself in Eau Claire where there was no yoga instruction to speak of except for the occasional itinerant teacher. She and a friend began to travel to St. Paul once a week for classes, and eventually the requests began to come from friends as yoga gained a foothold in the mainstream: Could you teach us yoga? “Just because we’re taking classes doesn’t mean we can teach anything,” Helpsmeet remembers replying. However, soon enough she and her then-business partner began holding a few classes a week in a room on the second floor of a building on Water Street. Fifteen years later, the venture – the Yoga Center of Eau Claire – has finally outgrown that limited space and recently relocated to roomier quarters at 2425 Golf Road, Suite 2F. During the same time, yoga has continued to explode in popularity and additional yoga teachers have set up shop in the Chippewa Valley. (See a complete listing of yoga studios beginning on page 36.) The new space features two studios – one big enough for 20 students, the other for about 10 – as well as a private room for one-on-one instruction. The Yoga

YOGA CENTER OF EAU CLAIRE

Center has about 12 teachers and, at any given time, about 20 different classes happening weekly. Donna Wagner Backus, who now co-owns the center, came to yoga in 2005 because of health problems and began to take private lessons. The practice spoke to her, she explains, and eventually Helpsmeet asked her to teach as well. “I said I almost flunked freshman PE, and she said, ‘This isn’t a PE class,’ ” Backus recalls. Therein lies one of the major misconceptions about yoga in the United States: Western eyes often look at yoga postures and see only exercise and stretching – moreover, the kind of exercise and stretching done only by the young, buff, and abnormally flexible. But the discipline is much more than that, both physically and mentally. Case in point: One of the major reasons Backus and Helpsmeet are happy with their relocation is that their second-floor studio is now accessible by elevator: Even students unable to walk up a flight of stairs because of age, disability, or injury can reap the benefits of yoga. Understandably enough for a discipline that developed thousands of years ago, there are numerous schools and styles of yoga. In hatha yoga – the style of

yoga practiced at the Yoga Center and elsewhere in the Chippewa Valley – the emphasis is on the physical side of yoga, such as postures and breathing, but meditation is part of the mix as well. Classes at the Yoga Center fall into several broad categories: alignment (learning the basics of postures and breathing); alignment flow (a more continuous flow between postures with less instruction); and adaptive yoga for students with limited mobility. So if yoga isn’t just a way – or even primarily a way – to break a sweat and raise your heart rate to an aerobic level, why do it? Helpsmeet and Backus offer a host of reasons: It builds mental and physical awareness. It calms the nervous system. It works out the kinks in fascia (the connective tissue between muscles and organs). It builds self-confidence. It helps you sleep better. In truth, the reasons for practicing yoga are almost as varied as the number of practitioners. Likewise, there are many styles and schools of yoga, but they share a common thread. As Helpsmeet explains: “They have as their objective what we would call the object of meditation: to be more mindful, to be more present.”
